The Uhura Bang Schedule 2023

The Uhura Bang 2023 Full Schedule

16th May-16th June: Creator Sign-Ups.

(Solo creator sign-ups can continue until as late as August)

16th June: primary creator sign ups close.

23rd June: First Primary Creator Check-in:

Primary Authors should have a fic description in mind, and decide if they are doing a fic, ficlet, etc.

Primary Artists should be aware that they will need at least a sketch which they can present for match-ups.

Solo Creators should have a work description in mind, and should present any written/drawn material to the mods at this stage.

Primary Creators may choose to change their role at this stage, but the 7th of July is the absolute latest in which you can drop out, or change your role. If you want to change your role, please email a mod [email protected] as soon as possible.

23rd June: First Secondary Creator Check-In: (Pre-Match-Up Check-in): Participants must tell mods any special considerations they require for match-ups.

1st July: Second Primary Creator Check-In (Pre-Match-Up Info)

Primary Authors, Primary Artists: Submit drafts/summaries/sketches for Match-Ups!

1st July: Secondary creators to submit their first/second/third choices for match-ups.

7th July: Deadline for submitting match-ups

16th July: Creator match-ups and teams announced

23rd July: (Optional) team check-in: Participants should contact us if there are any problems with their teammates.

30th July: First Team Check-In Due

Primary Authors must have a rough idea of final word count.

Secondary Authors should decide if they are writing a fic, one-shot, drabble, ficlet or poem (etc.), and have an idea of word count. Authors who are writing a full fic should submit a description or outline.

Primary Artists do not need to fill in this check-in, but may submit any other materials they have if they wish

Secondary Artists should describe any drawing ideas they have, or submit sketches.

24th August: Second Team Check-In:

Primary Authors must submit a rough draft which is at least 50% complete.

Primary Artists may upload images, but it is not compulsory.

Secondary Authors must have an outline

Secondary Artists should provide sketches.

30th of August: Second Solo Creator Check-In. Written works should be 50% complete. Illustrations should have at least an outline/rough sketch.

September: Teams should begin to discuss when they want to post for posting week.

16th of September: Third Team Check-In:

Primary and secondary Author drafts should be 75% complete & have no missing scenes [these can be listed on your outline in bullet-point form]

Artists should provide sketches

September 22nd: ALL creators submit posting availability, preferences.

September 30th: Posting schedule is made public

October 1st: Posting begins

October 22nd or sooner: Posting ends

What is the Uhura Bang?

The Uhura Bang is a combination big bang and reverse big-bang event focused on creativity, teamwork and communication. The only rule is that your work must prominently feature Uhura, and there are no word limits or minimums. Your work can be whatever length or genre you choose.

You should be 13+ to sign up. Creators who are under 18, or do not disclose their age, will only be assigned fics rated gen or teen-and-up.

Secondary Artists must complete at least one full illustration, either digital or traditional art.

Solo creators may submit photomanips or collages if they wish.

Idea: so Chekov transfers to the Enterprise at the beginning of season 2. He sees how close Kirk and Spock are. So he asks Sulu, "Are they, you know....?"

Sulu: very good friends? Oh yes.

He notices how much Kirk touches Spock on the bridge. He says to Uhura, "Boy, they are very affectionate."

Uhura: isn't it so lovely to see some non toxic masculinity around here?

In the rec room, he sees Kirk and Spock lightly touch fingers. "Is that...."

Scotty: their secret best friends handshake? Indeed it is!

And Chekov, for weeks, is wondering:

they're gay right? they have to be.

does literally no one else on the ship notice?

am I reading too much into things?

is it like a joint conspiracy of the whole ship that we don't talk about how they are very obviously banging?

Finally he can't take it anymore and confronts his friends. "They're so obviously gay! They are lovers! I should know, homosexuality was invented in Mother Russia!"

Everyone hoots with laughter. Money changes hands.

Turns out the whole thing was an elaborate hazing of Chekov. Literally everyone knew but him.

I think that a lot of people take issue with the way the Spock/Chapel/T'Pring love triangle is presented in Strange New Worlds, but that sometimes this is dismissed as fans just being bitter spirk shippers. So here are a few reasons why I believe people are iffy on this plotline. (Disregarding the fact that we're disappointed that the showrunners didn't, and most likely won't, take the chance to do something really cool with Spock's legacy as a queer coded character...)

Firstly, it takes time away from other characters to address an element of Spock's story that has already been explored beautifully. (I will get into how this treats Chapel and T'Pring later...) Spock's struggle with his humanity and his anguish over the depth of his feelings for others (particularly Jim) is a focus in TOS and the movies, and if you're going to keep on talking about it, at least do it in a more creative way? This isn't to say that it shouldn't be acknowledged at all, seeing that it is a lifelong struggle for him, but by making it such a focus of the series they're not giving other interesting characters as much of a chance to develop.

Additionally, it has traditionally been understood that Spock coped with his inner turmoil by repressing his feelings. Over the course of his lifetime, he learns to embrace his human side more to become a more balanced and healthy person. SNW takes the approach of "young Spock was more human and horny!" which isn't necessarily bad, but they better be giving us an explanation for how he transforms so dramatically to the extremely repressed character he is in TOS. Maybe this is reaching too far, but this whole approach of young Spock just feels like an excuse to get hot ladies into his bed and to fulfill the fantasies of nerdy men who project onto him. This is the same Spock who scoffed at the idea of going to see dancers at a bar, who was immune to the charms of the sexy ladies in Mudd's Women, who only entertained women when drugged or when he needed to do so for a mission...

Furthermore, I believe it's a disservice to Chapel. On one hand, it does make her love for Spock seem more grounded in reality, which I appreciate. In TOS, it's pretty clear that Spock doesn't share her feelings and her crush is only really ever used as a means of ridiculing her. There goes silly Chapel again, trying to win over her unrequited love! It's not cool. But on the same token, making Spock the focus of her character yet again only further reduces her to nothing but that. Why can't we let the girl breathe and do other stuff? Sure, she does get some of the AOS Uhura treatment where she gets to be a generic cool badass lady, but this is in a way that is lacking in any real depth. Chapel deserves better.

I also don't love the way it treats T'Pring. Was it really necessary for her to be Spock's eye candy wife that he gets to bang and cheat on? In Amok Time, it's heavily implied that this was an arranged thing and that they hadn't seen each other since they were seven. If they really felt the need to include this relationship, it would have been so much cooler if they had explored it from that angle, with neither of them truly wanting to be together but being forced into it by societal expectation. Which of course, results in T'Pring using her intelligence to gain her freedom in Amok Time.

So yeah. Those are my main gripes with this whole thing. Overall, I think it's lazy writing that allows the writers to benefit from the nostalgia of legacy characters without developing them in actually meaningful or revolutionary ways.

Big List of Universes in Star Trek:

Prime

Where most of Trek takes place. TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY, ENT, DSC, LWD, PRO, PIC, SNW etc. Gets a bit complicated in that the Temporal Wars from Enterprise have explicitly rewritten some events but for the most part it's all one enormous continuity. Just don't ask about the Eugenics Wars

Kelvin

Where the rebooted movies take place, essentially Prime until the day of Jim Kirk's birth, when a Romulan from the Prime future appears and begins wreaking havok, sending events on a familiar but different path with more running and explosions

Mirror

The morally inverted version of the Prime universe. Often the same people in the same place at the same time as Prime except under radically different circumstances. The Kelvin timeline has it's own mirror universe and the Coda books imply they're different sides of the same coin so perhaps every universe has it's mirror. Everyone dresses very slutty and all the women are at the very least bi. Almost as if it was written by men to appeal to teenage boys.

The First Splinter

Where the entire Star Trek novelverse takes place. Essentially Prime up until First Contact, although many events after that tie into ones hundreds of years before so it's all a bit complicated. Hundreds of stories exist here, as varied and amazing and sometimes awful as the TV shows and movies. Erased from history in 2387 but everyone you've loved and read about for years die horrible, horrible deaths first

Megas Tu

Accessed through a portal at the centre of our galaxy, a universe where magic is real and the source of many Earth myths and legends. Lucien is Satan but he's actually a pretty cool guy. Kirk and Spock learned to use magic there.

Parallels

300,000 universes converge, ranging from ones where Worf has a different painting in his quarters to him banging Troi to the Borg having conquered the Federation

Reverse

Black stars on a white void, ships fly backwards, at warp 36, the elderly grow young and live backwards and I'm afraid to ask how this reverse life ends

Second History

From the novel Killing Time. Super gay and angsty. Romulans alter history, leading to Spock being captain and Jim Kirk being a drug addict ensign on the V.S.S. ShiKahr

Renegades

A bootleg version of Star Trek in a fan film universe, altered on day two of filming after the Axanar drama began. It's Star Trek with the serial numbers just barely filed off. The Confederation instead of the Federation, Sector 6 instead of Section 31, Kovok instead of Tuvok, Jemison instead of Uhura, Rigillians instead of Romulans and so on. 2 novels were released which try to differentiate the universes more clearly, and the last Renegades film Ominara re-reboots the whole thing and features an Uhura-ish character and the Star Trek ish sets, but otherwise everything else is different.

Fascistverse

Created by Q to test Jean-Luc and friends in season 2 of Picard, this was along the lines of the Mirror universe but with a divergence point in 2024, if Trump wins the election if Picard's ancestor Renee goes into space or not.

Musical

A crossover with this universe in SNW "Subspace Rhapsody" leads to the quadrant singing uncontrollably, accompanied by music and with full choreography.

I feel like the only reason why the concept of Kirk and Spock being married/soulmates in actual canon isn't discussed in universe is because Spock never says shit about any of his personal lore and Kirk can keep a secret if prompted (ie. his own fucking child)

Let's imagine for years that those two dorks were married. Do you think they'd tell people? Absolutely not! They'd probably forget and only relay that information if they were dying. Dramatic ass bitches the two of them.

Also I feel like they'd also forget they never told anyone and it'd just be how they are fundamentally. Other's probably they think to themselves ofc Spock and Kirk aren't married even tho they'll kill for each other and always are oddly close for no particular reason! That's just how they be!

I feel like Bones would figure it out first cause y'know medical records. He'd probably bang his head against the wall and mutter to himself until Chapel asks if he needs to lie down.

Uhura would be so unsurprised by this though. She knew this would happen from the very first time they met and shook hands. Uhura knows okay? Uhura is the best.

Voyager SNW AU.

Wherein: Chris Pike captains Voyager into the badlands chasing the renegade Illyrian ship Astra captained by former Starfleet officer Una Chin-Riley who escaped custody after her genetic status as Illyrian was revealed.

Wherein: Upon transport to the Delta Quadrant it is revealed that La'an Noonien-Singh, the Astra's tactical officer, has been working for SF the whole time as a spy and is actually Pike's tactical officer.

Wherein: Una's dearest childhood friend Neera has been transported to the Caretakers array along with Spock from Voyager.

Wherein: Ortegas and Chin-Riley have beef with each other but also a grudging respect for each other's piloting skills

Wherein: A grumpy Andorian brought by an earlier Caretaker wave insists they rescue his friend Uhura from the Kazon. It's 100% platonic. Una and Hemmer go way back and she convinces Pike to help them. She regrets it slightly when Hemmer pretends to be a wizard who can conjure water from thin air, but the Kazon don't spend the next several years chasing them down for replicators because they don't know they exist.

Wherein: Uhura immediately crawls into Voyagers communications array and upgrades the system and also is able to provide diplomatic protocols for the surrounding area. Hemmer is there "to fix what is broken" so they throw him into engineering with Neera to see what will happen.

Wherein: Dr M'Benga's daughter is cured accidentally while in the Caretaker's "care". Naomi Wildman will grow up with a playmate. Christine Chapel was on the Illyrian ship and is very excited to play with the latest Starfleet tech. M'Benga spends a lot of time fishing on the holodeck.

Wherein: Pike and Una now have to get everybody home but you know what they're gonna bang the whole way because there's no misogyny in this version in this essay I will...

"Affirmative, Commander." Una was certain he could imagine her expression as she could imagine his. But much as it might have improved her mood, his voice didn't waver as he continued. "Ensign Uhura believes she has found a way to speak directly to the Grimmorians. However, it will take several minutes, and Lieutenant Kirk is certain that if you are to reject their traditional welcome, they will be extremely-" He hesitated. "-displeased."

"Their traditional welcome is an Earth fairytale?"

"Taken from our databanks," Sam said. "It's actually pretty fascinating-"

"Define displeased," Una said warily. There were rustles around the clearing and Una's eyes pierced the foliage in all directions. But the only other person nearby seemed to be Chris, serenely reposed in a bed of flowers.

"The closest translation I can find is 'grave dishonor.'" Uhura's voice broke over Spock's, and she at least had the decency to sound nervous. "Followed by several.... violent glyphs that I'm still working on."

Una groaned and looked around the clearing again. Sure as she was that there were eyes on her, she couldn't pick out any distinctive features. Reluctantly, she looked back at Chris. This was the calmest he had slept in some time. If it could even be called sleep; according to her tricorder he was not breathing, but all his cellular functions were continuing normally.

"Are we sure there's no other way?" she asked desperately. Chris wouldn't mind, she knew that. The problem would be making herself forget it and moving on. It was already hard enough not to imagine kissing him without the tactile experience. Heat crawled up her cheeks.

"Not as of now, Commander," Spock answered. Una resisted the urge to bang her head off one of the picturesque tree trunks.

"Stand by," she growled, and closed her communicator. She marched over to Chris and knelt beside him. Not one hair was out of place, his uniform was perfectly pressed and unwrinkled. Just like a princess, Una thought wryly.

Quickly, so she wouldn't talk herself out of it, Una leaned over and pressed her lips to his. Desires she had put a lot of effort into repressing kept her there for a few seconds, cataloguing the entire experience.

To her shame, she wasn't sure how long she would have stayed if Chris hadn't twitched. She jerked away as he blinked his eyes open. "I can't believe that worked."

Chris frowned up at her as he took stock of the situation, but he seemed to decide there was no immediate danger, and he cocked a tiny smile.

"Are you sure it did?" he asked casually, like he wasn't lying on a forest floor.

"What do you mean, of course it-" Chris reached up and stroked her cheek, and Una went silent.

"You should probably try again," he said. "Just to be thorough."

A slow smile spread across Una's face, and Chris grinned as she leaned down and kissed him.

I got hand cramp drawing my submission for the Uhura bang and let me tell you, Jess Bush may just join the ranks of "star trek actors who are impossible to draw". Nurse Chapel is pulling a Shatner. I am pulling a muscle. Popping a blood vessel. Etc.

#also i guess maybe drawing for 5 hours straight with no breaks isn't a good idea but it's not like that's unusual for me #things not to do #SNW
