Apropo of a Reddit post, here is my casting for a Rat Grinders spinoff.
Kipperlilly Copperkettle: Aabria Iyengar. Loves being intense and bitchy in actual play.
Mary Ann Scuttle: Katie Marovich, obviously.
Ivy: Lily Du. Lily's niche on DropOut is being hot and mean, and she needs a real hot meanie to inhabit in the dome.
Oisin: Ify Nwadiwe.
Ruben Hopclap: Ruben is where it gets tricky. A lot of people on DropOut could play a good Ruben Hopclap. Grant could give us a great Ruben. Freddie Wong. Jacob Wysocki. Brian David Gilbert. All potential legendary Ruben Hopclaps.
In a sequel to Junior Year: Grant O Brien could be a great Buddy Dawn, but I'd really give this role to Ross Bryant.
In a prequel to Junior Year: Honestly, I think the best Lucy would be Oscar Montoya. I don't know why, but that feels right to me.

Woke up to the most insane discourse about FHJY this morning and like guys, gals, and non-binary pals its just a show
Tumblr media
So in the effort to spread positivity I want to share my fav moment from last nights episode and feel free to comment and share yours.
I'll start its a toss up between k2 flying down from the sky, mary poppins style, to cast ice feast or riz fully submerging himself into lava which fucking broken kipperlily so much she fully dropped stealth to swear.

I get that people love the rat grinders
and want to see them redeemed because they were being misled by their teachers
And maybe I would have been on that side if it hadn't been for KLCK. If it wasn't the slashing her own AP member's throat, it would the complaining about Riz having a hard life as if that somehow gave him advantage. If it wasn't the endangering students at the party, it would be the trying to bring about the apocalypse. I have as much sympathy for her as I have for Penelope, Biz and Dayne in freshman year.
In conclusion:
Tumblr media
I don't really care much about the rest of TRG. Except maybe hating Ivy for being a fantasy racist. I even thought Oisin and Adaine would be cute together before it turned out there was nothing there at all. Ruben is insufferable but what teen boy isn't. I just don't think that him being a teenager makes him a wooby whose actions need to be ignored or justified.
I'm not saying it's bad to care about TRG or whatever. i just don't get why people are acting like TBK are awful for killing TRG when TRG have been making their lives miserable. And are also actively trying to bring about the apocalypse. Or worse that BLeeM and IH are horrible for not shifting the story from mystery solving to focusing on redeeming TRG

I will say if we get a Rat Grinders side quest I think it would be a sick full circle moment for Brennan to play Kipperlily while someone else DMs. To me the rat grinders are living through a YA thriller/horror setting and I’d love to explore something like that when we’ve seen essentially a coming of age teen comedy kinda thing with the bad kids.

I am trying to collect my thoughts on the route the campaign took with the Rat Grinders, and I think I have come to the conclusion that the reason I am upset is not because I think the cast are bad players or Brennan is a bad dungeon master or that I didn't know the Rat Grinders where most likely to die (I went into the episode knowing the likelihood was above ninety percent).
The reason I am upset about the ending for the Rat Grinders is that I know all they will be is a footnote in the Bad Kids' history, a tragedy that will be forgotten and doomed to be repeated because there will be no narrative consequences to their deaths.
At the end of the day, whether some sections of the fandom want to admit it, is that we have several things confirmed about the Rat Grinders. They were freshmen (fourteen to fifteen) when Porter and Jace scoped them out and started the grooming/manipulation. They were sophomores (fifteen to sixteen) when corrupted. Their real selves were buried under the rage (Ruben's dream sequence), and in Kipperlilly's case actively seeking out help before being taken advantage of (sessions with Jawbone).
But there will be no lesson learned here because there will be no consequence to the decision to let the Rat Grinders die.
Henry Hopclap will continue teaching Gorgug, despite losing his nephew to Fig (Gorgug's friend) who psychologically messed with him before she had any confirmation of his wrongdoing. Not to mention, he will continue being on the same staff as Jawbone who the Bad Kids helped obtain a normal life despite his beginnings.
Lucy Frostblade will (most likely) be resurrected as some sort of cosmic justice, but her party will be gone. They may have killed her, but there was evidence they were her friends (or at least Kipperlily was). She might be resurrected, despite the fact she no longer has any party and will be failed instantly and wrapped up in grief.
Then, there will be the way the Rat Grinders will be footnotes. Ivy, reduced to her looks and not sleeping with Fabian in a display of blatant misogyny. Oisin who they clawed to chop the head off of to prevent his chances at resurrection for the crime of Adaine potentially inferring his intentions wrong (something we will never get the confirmation on). Ruben, dragged to hell and his corpse charred in lava after being psychologically messed with. Buddy Dawn, who couldn't leave the cult as easily as Kristen. Mary Ann, who was the one they wanted to save while treating her in a way that read as kind of ableist [others words not mine] (and even if they do save her would she want anything to do with them knowing they saved her and not her other party members?). Then, finally, Kipperlilly who will have egg on her face for wanting something despite the confirmation that before everything she was getting help.
The reason I am upset about the Rat Grinders is because they'll be reduced to pawns in Porter and Jace's schemes, and not as the manipulated minors they are. But it is alright I guess, because the Bad Kids saved the world and they get to write the ending.

Me: what if I idly fan cast who I'd love at the table if the rat grinders get a spin-off like the seven did
My next immediate thought: Sam Riegel and Liam O'Brien's d20 debut as Ruben and Oisin respectively

I am begging the fantasy high community to stay out of each other's comment sections and don't make posts dragging the morality or intelligence of others. Let people process the source material in an authentic way, there is nothing wrong with that. You don't need to defend these characters; they aren't real-life victims that need your help. Within the story itself they are still very much framed as villains, or at the very least antagonists, whether you agree or not.
People are allowed to share their thoughts and opinions on these characters and if you don't agree or think their opinions are trash, you don't have to take them to heart, you can just move on. It's just so dystopian to me that we are more open minded towards these characters than we are to real people just reacting to a story. Harassment isn't cute and if you are logging on just to argue with people you need to log off!!

Saw @respectissexy making fan castings for both the rat grinders and bar parents and I probably would add the fantasy high teachers because a abott elementary type season would be so funny.
Let’s start with the rat grinders though.
Kipperlilly Coperkettle
I agree that Aabria Iyengar is the only right choice here… i’d love to see her to play what is basically an even meaner Suvi.
Ruben Hobclapp
Look hear me out: Sam Riegel as Ruben. It be so funny, also Sam would be a bard again which is just good for nature and he always has great chemistry with Aabria.
Mary Ann Skuttle
Though one for me but I think I will go with Jasmine Bhullar over Rekha Shankar on this one. Jasmine is already so good with just little creatures in coffin run. Also I’d love to see her as a player. Also I think she can play her respectfully and still really fucking funny.
Oisin Hakinvar
Ross Bryant! I was between Iffy, Hank Green and Ross on this one but I believe Ross is the Choice! I just want him in the dome. Also he gives secretly buff nerd vibes.
Ivy Embra
Ai👏mee👏Car👏rero👏 She plays magnificent bitches so well please. Also great chemistry with Aabria she deserves to be chaotic with Aimee for once instead of getting her shit wrecked by her.
Lucy Frostblade
Persephone Valentine. Again another player with great chemistry with Aabria but also she already broke my heart as Sam Nightingale, I’d allow her to do it a second time as Lucy. Also the looks she would serve. Lucy deserves the glow up she is my favorite of the rat grinders after all.
Buddy Dawn
I’d rather would like to have campaign with my girl Lucy but if need id need Damian Haas to make Bobby acceptable to me.

i wanted to make a post about a thing but the more i think about it the more i want to say and it's just going to end up being a big ramble essay, so instead i'll just give the thesis statement, thusly:
as the #1 Ratgrinders Apologist (self-appointed), of course they're the final boss fight to the death. i expected nothing less and the people trying to make discourse about it are ignoring the entire context of this being a Dungeons and Dragons game
#they're not playing 'discuss our traumas and and try to help strangers grow: the game'#they're playing 'murder people for getting in our way: the game'#which i know is now me being snubbing about D&D as a game but like. siobhan said it: theyve committed SO much murder#did the lunch lady in episode 2 deserve to be murdered? did the skater dwarves deserved to be murdered?#did the monsters the school sicced on the kids in their Last Stand deserve to be slaughtered like that??#its literally the name of the game!#the two things that are turning this into a bigger essay are 1) me being actually very disappointed in Burrow's End with how the players#just did not want at all to engage with the moral greyness aabria was trying to bring into the story#it was clear that was a direction she wanted to explore and i wanted to see it explored#but even OUT of characters the cast just would NOT engage or acknowledge the validity of that direction#and there was only so much aabria could do without being labeled a killjoy... because D&D often ISN'T a game for reckoning with#the justification of your character's actions! its a game for killing giant bears and saving the town from cultists!!#baked into the foundation of the game conceit is 'you are the hero and you are saving the day ergo your actions are Right and Just'#thing 2) i just listened to that WWW fireside the other day where brennan goes on about how combat does not get in the way#of story in dnd. that whole stove metaphor? and it rankled me so much lol because like aabria finally says after that:#yeah you bring your own food to the stove but when what you've got is a stove. the food you make is GOING to get cooked#combat and fighting and killing is baked into the system from its foundation. acting like D&D or even just d20 (the system)#is a resolution engine that also allows fighting and not a fighting engine that also allows other skills is. wishful thinking i think#and to bring this back to the POINT: of COURSE they're going to kill the rat grinders! because it's fun!#because thats how you resolve conflict in a combat game! straight up i honestly believe a lengthy conversation trying to win the kids over#would have been a weird energy to end the season on! it would have been a let down!#it would have been a huge tonal shift. because the tone you bring to a D&D game is 'killing this is fine actually'#and if you dont like that you /dont/ play D&D. its not a value judgment#i LOVE getting into moral implications and justifications and ive gotta tone it down when i run D&D games because it can kill the vibe#anyway. i said i wasnt going to write the whole essay and im not. but i did write most of the rant oops

Guys, it would be real funny (and a little tragic, but I'm ignoring that) if Reuben (or even Oisin and Ivy) doesn't even vote for Kipperlilly for President. If he voted for their name change just to fuck with her cause she cared about it, why wouldn't he not vote for her. Leave Kristen with a landslide 100% of the votes except maybe Kipperlilly's own, knowing it won't matter anyway regardless of if the plan does or doesn't work but still trying to screw with her just a touch.

Since I haven't seen anyone say it I'm going to say it:
Start of Junior Year Kipperlily asks/hears about the dead god YES that Kristen made.
Lydia Barkrock shares that Bakur failed to bring Ankarna back because a god has to be resurrected specifically in a place that a god was born.
When Cassandra was disappeared/taken (?) the being that reached out to mock Kristen dropped YES's rotting corpse at her feet- imho, a clue for the PCs that YES is involved.
Whoever tries to resurrect Ankarna is going to be doing it wherever Kristen created YES, and Kipperlily is 100% involved.
Like,

the rat grinders getting whomped because they don't know how actual combat works is exactly what I've been waiting for all season. fabian taking down ivy in one turn bc they have no hp, them grouping up bc they don't know they're not supposed to and getting immediately shit on by adaine, riz's attack of opportunity doing more damage to kipperlilly than her actual attack did to him, gorgug taking down oisin by the end of round 1 bc they didn't protect their wizard, kristen and k2 both bringing all their friends up while keeping themselves strategically hidden bc they know better, riz diving into the lava like it's nothing bc he's a badass, adaine slapping jace's counterspell out of the air, fig tanking that hit from porter and casting that clutch fireball. just. beautiful. iconic. poetic. exactly what the rat grinders deserve after xp grinding for three years instead of actually adventuring. you fucking suck at this game kipperlilly!! you might be high level but you're shit at pvp!!!!!

I had hoped Gorgug would get the killing blow on Porter to get back at him after his horrible treatment of Gorgug for the past 3 years. Maybe using that rage that Porter always deemed insufficient. I had hoped Porter would meet a violent end that he deserves for influencing the Rat Grinders and attempting to revive Ankarna just to kill her. For the murder of Lucy Frostblade and Yolanda Badgood.
Instead, after getting downed by Porter 3 times, thanks to Adaine's very clever use of Fabian's gift, Gorgug got to be part of the amazing teamwork that brings Porter down. Not using the rage that Porter kept insisting on him using, but using an ability he essentially developed against all of Porter's expectations. And he does it, coming out of rage with a smile on his face, saying, "Hey. Don't be blinded by rage."

This was way better than I ever imagined. And it gives a stronger message. Thank you, truly, to this cast. You are all amazing.

The thing that's bothering me with people saying the Bad Kids didn't even try to reach out to the Rat Grinders and just started indiscriminately killing them is that THEY DID.
Like, sure Wanda Childa originally started as a bit so that Fig could gather Intel on Ruben. But the whole dream sequence and faking Wanda Childa's death outside Ruben's house was to persuade him to abandon the Rat Grinders. It's not Fig's (or Emily's!) fault that it didn't work. But she was desperately trying to get a read on that kid throughout the whoooooole season.
The Bad Kids have been doing insight checks on Kipperlilly the whole season and getting NOTHING. Even with pretty good insight checks they were just getting, "this is a very fake person." That coupled with the fact that Kipperlilly appears to have come up with the plan to dig up Eugenia's grave to get her automatic A before she got rage-starred, what exactly were they supposed to do with her?
And when it comes to Buddy Dawn, my goodness. Kristen has given that kid endless amounts of her patience and kindness when he has not earned it. He hasn't necessarily earned her ire, but he hasn't earned her kindness. And yet, the first thing she did when he got killed was try desperately to find a way to resurrect him, despite the fact that members of her own party would maybe need that higher spell slot later. The first thing Kristen did after getting to the gym? Insight check on Buddy Dawn to see whether he had actually bought into this. Kristen can't help that Ally, the player, rolled a Nat 1. It's not Kristen's fault. But up until the very last, Kristen was trying to save him, because she sees herself in him.
Sure, with Ivy, Oisin, and Mary Ann no one tried very hard to get a read on them. But also I feel like we didn't see them much. And the Bad Kids did try at that first party to figure them out, they just rolled poorly. As Brennan put it, the dice have been on the Bad Kids' side, not on the side of the story he had prepped to tell. And that's fine! The dice are the uncontrollable element of DND! But you can't get mad at the Bad Kids for not trying when they have, in fact, been trying all season to get a read on these kids and just totally whiffing every time.
Also, people are apparently getting mad at the cast too? Which, 1, this is not your game and these are not your friends, so leave them alone. And 2, Ally said this episode that they felt "blackout drunk" driving home, which I am assuming is from exhaustion given the filming schedule mentioned in (I think) episode 17. These people are exhausted and running on fumes. As actual human beings they are likely struggling with concentration etc. and they should all be given some slack.
