guillermo del toro’s pinocchio is a beautiful film but my god no one has adapted that story like neverafter. you can never look at it the same way again after listening to lou wilson, a black man, explaining that he chose to play as pinocchio because it’s a story about a little boy who isn’t allowed to make mistakes. that in pinocchio's story, he is fundamentally barred from childhood at once upon a time. he must earn something that everyone else is granted from birth. the other boys get to tell lies and play and get into trouble, but when pinocchio does the same thing there are grave and violent consequences. his pinocchio is trying to understand why the world is so unfair, why the rules are so different for him, why everyone else gets to be a real boy.

and I think about it every day.

I just realized: Kipperlilly and the Rat Grinders wanted Buddy to die not just so the Bad Kids would fail the Last Stand, they were also hoping the Bad Kids would die and Buddy wouldn’t be there to bring them back SO THAT ANKARNA COULD OFFER THEM THE DEAL.

Obviously Ankarna is pulling the strings. All the Rat Grinders died, and only Lucy turned down the offer to be resurrected by rage. They weren’t just killing Buddy to fuck with grades or to get Buddy resurrected by Ankarna, they were helping their boss recruit the better team. I think Ankarna wants The Bad Kids on team rage real bad.

In fact, what if Ankarna wants Kristen specifically? She was Helio’s chosen, and it seems like Ankarna and Helio might have beef over followers. Plus, Kristen has preformed miracles and resurrected a dead god. Maybe Ankarna sees Kristen as the way back to power and is desperate to get her dead so she can be offered the deal!

(Putting on my adolescent therapist hat again) Fantasy High: Junior Year is a much better representation of adolescence than the other Fantasy High seasons because the cast is leaning into playing adolescence like it fucking sucks. All good media about teens has to understand that being a teenager fucking sucks. It's the worst. You're a kid when it's convenient for the adults and you're also an adult when it's convenient for the adults. The absolute pits. The assignment for this season was "how to make The Bad Kids experience how much being a teenager sucks even though they're so powerful now" and boy did they nail it.

In the course of me going around telling people I am reading Infinite Jest, I have had more than one woman basically wrinkle her nose and go "isn't that an Annoying Man Book?" and I need people to understand that talking about literature in this way is basically putting a feminist veneer on "you shouldn't read that, it's for boys."
