A primer on the UEFA Champions League for the Ted Lasso fandom

In the finale, we’re told several times that Richmond have qualified for the Champions League. If you have only a very vague idea of what that means, this is the post for you.

WHAT IS IT?

The Champions League (UCL) is a club competition among top-league European clubs. It draws clubs from the top leagues of ALL* countries members of UEFA, the governing body of football associations in Europe. (*All countries except Liechtenstein and, currently, Russia)

WHEN IS IT?

The UCL runs alongside the regular season, from September to June. This means that clubs who compete in it play UCL matches on top of regular Premier League matches. Richmond weren’t “promoted” to the Champions League — they remain first and foremost a Premier League club. They also get to play with the rest of Europe’s cool kids.

UCL matches would be mid-week (Tuesday or Wednesday) every 3-ish weeks, and domestic league matches would usually be on weekends. YES this will mean that Richmond will be very busy next season.

WHICH CLUBS ARE IN IT?

The top 4 clubs in the Premier League automatically make it to the main competition for the NEXT round of the UCL. The path is a bit more complicated for most other countries but luckily it doesn’t apply here so we don’t need to go into that.

Richmond finished in second place in the League for the year 21/22 (season 3) so they’d play in the UCL for the 22/23 season. This doesn’t mean they are guranteed to still play in the UCL in the 23/24 season if they can’t end the 22/23 Prem in the Top 4. They need to REMAIN a top national club to qualify again for the Champions League.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

GROUP STAGE: a round-robin round where 32 teams are divided in 8 groups of 4. Each team in each group plays the other teams in the group twice, once at home (hosting) once away (being hosted) for a total of SIX matches. The top TWO sides in each group advance to the knockout round. This stage takes place from August to December. Richmond would enter directly from this round.

KNOCKOUT ROUND: this round is in double-legged format—this means that each paired sides play each other TWICE, once at home and once away. The round winner is decided by goal difference, so a side can advance to the next round if they lose one of the two matches, provide they win the other by a larger goal difference. If both legs are a draw, there can be extra time and/or a penalty shootout.

In the round of 16 sides from the same country CAN’T play against each other, so for example Richmond couldn’t play Arsenal in that round. In the quarter-final (8 teams) and a semifinal (4 teams) rounds teams from the same country CAN draw each other, so that could happen.

For example, in the current season, AC Milan played Napoli in the quarter-final and then Inter Milan in the semifinals; all three teams are from Italy. The double-legged knockout round takes place from February to May.

FINAL: It’s in June. The two teams who remain standing after the semifinals only play each other ONCE. The location is appointed beforehand and it’s often neutral ground to both teams. The next UCL final will actually be this Saturday (June 10) Man City v. Inter Milan will play in Istanbul.

how many matches in a UCL season?

If you make it to the semifinals, it’s 6 in group stage + 6 in the 3 successive knockout rounds. This is 12 matches, of which 6 are away (and usually abroad) The final is the 13th match.

What does it mean to win the Champions League?

The UCL is considered the most prestigious club competition in the world. We see in in the show; Roy having won the UCL with Chelsea in 2012 comes up several times in S1, even though Chelsea also won the Premier League multiple times while Roy was there — but the Champions League is the one people bring up.

Winning the domestic league is obviously a big fucking deal, but winning the UCL is huge. Only a handful of top-league clubs have won it multiple times, and many big clubs have NEVER won it (including Man City, PSG, Arsenal and AS Roma) Then there’s Real Madrid who’ve won it FOURTEEN TIMES

If Khalnayak were released in 2023 it would have collected INR 210 Crore net. 5. Baazigar (1993)

The iconic duo Shah Rukh Khan and Kajor appeared in Abbas-Mustan's Baazigar which was an unofficial remake of the Hollywood film A Kiss Before Dying, released on November 12, 1993. The film received a blockbuster verdict for its commercial success, collecting INR 14 Crore net in India and INR 32 Crore gross worldwide. Baazigar's equivalent box office collection in 2023 is INR 230 Crore. 6. Raja Hindustani (1996)

Raja Hindustani was a romantic drama film released on November 15, 1996, starring Aamir Khan and Karishma Kapoor. If we talk about Raja Hindustani's verdict at the box office, it was an out-n-out success story because the film was made on a budget of INR 5.75 crore and it collected INR 43.15 Crore net in India and INR 76.34 Crore worldwide to become the highest-grossing film of that year and the third most successful Hindi film of the 1990s. If we adjust inflation Raja Hindustani would collect INR 800 Crore net in 2023. 7. Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994)

Main Khiladi Tu Anari was released in 1994, starring Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan in lead roles. This comedy-action film was a sure-shot blockbuster of the year and one of the top 5 highest-grossing films of that year. In India, Main Khiladi Tu Anari collected INR 7.88 Crore net and INR 13.84 Crore worldwide. The inflation-adjusted box office collection of Main Khiladi Tu Anari in 2023 should be INR 200 Crore. 8. Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (2001)

An Anil Sharma film, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, released on June 15, 2001, was a tsunami at the box office, collecting INR 76.88 Crore Net in India and INR 111.73 Crore Gross worldwide. Over 5 crore people watched the film in theaters. It would be 2023 instead of 2001, and the equivalent box office collection of Gadar: Ek Prem Katha would rack over INR 500 Crore 9. Amar Akbar Anthony (1977)

This film starring top actors of the Hindi Film Industry, Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor, and Vinod Khanna, in the lead roles, was released on May 27, 1977, and is regarded as one of the most iconic films of Bollywood. Amar Akbar Anthony was the highest-grossing film of that year, collecting INR 7.5 Crore net in India and INR 15.5 Crore gross worldwide. Inflation adjusted box office collection of Amar Akbar Anthony is INR 450 Crore. 10. Dilwale (1994)

It was a romantic-action film, featuring Ajay Devgn and Sunil Shetty in lead roles. Dilwale was released in theaters on February 4, 1994. The film made on a budget of INR 2 Crore, did a business of INR 8.5 Crore net in India and INR 12 Crore gross worldwide, proven to be a Superhit film in Ajay Devgn's early career. I've been doing some thinking and I've come up with a theory about Richmond

So in the Premier League there are 20 teams and in the Championship there are 24. As Lasso very much follows the same rules as the actual footy world they've got to get rid to a team to make space for Richmond to exist and I think I know who!

As much as it saddens me to say this (as this is my team whom I love dearly) I think they've replaced Fulham.

Firstly it makes sense as in terms of geography Fulham and Richmond aren't too far from each other, they both sit down the same end of the District Line so it's not crazy to draw comparisons.

Secondly we're both mid-table teams and our promotions and relegation timelines are exactly the same:

2020-21 season we got relegated

2021-22 we get promoted

2022-23 we remain in the Prem, sure we came tenth and Richmond came second but we didn't have Zava so like, ya know, not our fault

You also never see Fulham in anything, like in the background of Soccer Saturday you have the badges of all the clubs and you never see Fulham (yes I have looked in depth, no I am not normal about how much I love me team). The only time you ever see anything Fulham related is the external shots of our stadium and they are used for Everton who ain't even close to us.

And I know there are lots of other teams we don't see or hear about but there's a lot that lines up, a lot of similarities between the two clubs that it just feels a little too convenient.

So yeah I think AFC Richmond replaced Fulham FC in the Ted Lasso universe

it also means that if Richmond are Fulham then this meme exists which personally I think is iconic and wonderful

Amaal Mallik made his debut as a music composer in Bollywood with Jai Ho. The year was 2014, when he entered the world of showbiz with the Salman Khan film. Recalling his first Hindi film as a music composer, Amaal feels he didn't deliver well. However, he learnt a lesson, went through another year of hard work and delivered chartbuster songs.

After collaborating with Salman on Jai Ho, Amaal reunited with the superstar for his upcoming film, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. In an exclusive chat with IndiaToday.in, Mallik spoke about his upcoming track with Khan.

AMAAL MALLIK ON SALMAN'S KISI KA BHAI KISI KI JAAN SONG

Speaking exclusively with IndiaToday.in, Amaal Mallik opened up about his reunion with Salman for Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan. He also revealed an unknown fact about his track with the superstar.

"Now, eight years later, we are doing a heartfelt song together. Last we collaborated on Main Hoon Hero Tera and now we are coming together and I hope people love it. I can only say that it is a track about romance and love. It is something I made as a composition in 2012 and he remembered that tune as he had it in his recording. He remembers songs and has them on his phone. He said, 'I am doing this song and you have to start working on it.' That's what we are doing right now," said Amaal.

He added, "As we speak, tomorrow, we have recordings for it. The melody is something that I made in 2012 and the whole arrangement, production and beats I am doing now. So my 2023 ka mind is going to work on 2012 ka brain. It is a nostalgic feeling. He had like 4 to 5 songs, out of which Hero was released. He also liked this song. Today, I am doing it for his film. I hope all listeners, Amaalians and Salman Khan fans are ready for a song that is about falling in love and being in love. It is another love song by me, but this time it is with Salman Khan."

'I OWE MY BEGINNING TO MR SALMAN KHAN'

Going down memory lane, Amaal recalled how he got his big break in Bollywood with Jai Ho. He expressed gratitude to Salman and said, "I owe my beginnings to Mr Salman Khan and sir is someone who believed in me that I could be a composer at 23. And I remember, during Jai Ho, I was asked what credit would go. So I said you can give the credit as music produced or beats by Amaal Mallik. He looked at me and said, what kind of credit is that? Music composer banna hain ya nahi banna hai? He was like, otherwise, don't give me the song. I was thrown into this industry like that. Of course, struggles are there. It was not easy to reach him. That is another chapter of life. But once he liked it, he gave me such a big platform to debut on. He took Armaan (Malik) as a vocalist and Salman Khan's voice was Armaan's voice when he was 19. He took a big risk for both of us. And I personally felt I didn't understand much about what to do. I was young and didn't deliver well in Jai Ho. Later, when I did a song with him, Main Hoon Hero Tera, which created history, by then I understood what his fans also like about him and what kind of music they like. In the first film, you don't know, whatever you have been guided about - you try your best."

Before signing off, the music composer stated, "He loved EDM music. That's why we did songs likeTumko Toh Aana Hi Tha, Love You Till The End and the Jai Ho title track in the film. There were EDM-driven club anthem kind-of productions. But his audience is very massy and commercial. They love to see him in either beautiful songs like Teri Meri Prem Kahani (from Bodyguard) or Character Dheela and Dhinka Chika. So, these two spaces are something fans love about him. Even though Salman sir listens to different kinds of music, he is aware and he knows what works for him, but he also knows what works for his fans and they will love it. That surety which he has helps a music composer know what to do. By then I understood where I went wrong with Jai Ho. I am glad that my first film, in spite of it being the biggest launch, I didn't deliver well on music. It taught me a lesson and made me go through another year of hard work so that I could do something like Main Hoon Hero Tera and Sooraj Dooba to take my career forward. I am indebted to him for believing in 23-year-old Amaal Malik, who thought he would debut as a composer at 32 or 33. It was his belief that I became this."

The Striker Problem

United need a new centre forward to lead the line and bang in some goals, but there seems to be a shortage of ideal strikers available with Daniel Levy more likely to go to Jupiter than sell us Harry Kane, Osimhen too expensive, Håland at City, and an array of hot prospect young talent not quite ready.

Surely there's someone out there suitable for United though, right? Right?!

Rasmus Højlund - The 20 year old, pictured above, is THE number 1 striker target for Manchester United at present. A deal is reportedly in the works, with a loan back of Mason Greenwood to fill the void left.

Dubbed the next Håland (despite only being 2 years younger), Højlund is tall, fast, agile, and technically gifted. He also likes to stay central ala Van Nistelrooy, rather than drift wide. This discipline is very important to Erik Ten Hag with an array of floating forwards in Rashford, Sancho et al.

16 goals and 7 assists in 42 games is a fair return at Atalanta, and with the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount behind him next season... perhaps he could do even more in the Premiership.

Mehdi Taremi - He might be 30 years old, but Taremi could be a great senior striker to lead the line and act as mentor to a young striker like Højlund. He has 31 goals and 14 assists in 51 appearances this season gone, with 5 in the Champions League for Porto. A short 3-year deal could do the job for United as an interim while Erik Ten Hag continues his squad overhaul, buying time for academy prospects like McNeill and Hugill to step up.

Gonçalo Ramos - The 22 year old had a banger World Cup, a good season with Benfica, and a whoopsie moment with a... private video leaked onto the internet. PR gaff aside, 27 goals and 12 assists in 47 games is very promising. A good choice, though it's unclear if he could step up to the physicality of the Prem.

Randal Kolo Muani - 23 goals and 17 assists in 46 games. Nice work from the 24 year old in the Bundesliga and German Cup. RKM is rumoured the other main striker preference for Ten Hag - potentially even WITH Rasmus Højlund if funds work out. At 4 years his senior they would both be young prospects for the future, but with Muani having just that little extra maturity to show results quicker - and perhaps warrant a starting CF position.

Loïs Openda - Linked with Leipzig to replace Chelsea signing Nkunku, Openda is a promising young striker in Ligue 1 and a potential gamble for United if they were tight on budget.

Aleksandar Mitrović - Premier League proven striker with Newcastle (hmm) and Fulham (okay he turned good) but perhaps might now hate us after his red card in the 3-1 defeat to United. He's big, strong, and fearless though. He'd be an asset.

Amine Gouiri - Gouiri is also a young striker in Ligue 1, like Openda, but his game is much more rounded. He is the Complete Forward, to borrow Football Manager parlance. This could suit Ten Hag's forward pressing game, but he might lack the dedicated striking discipline needed for United at present.

Ivan Toney - Another Premier League proven forward ala Mitro. He's big, strong, and confident. He doesn't lack pace and has that striker's instinct knack to just bag goals consistently. Dependability is huge, and I think bids might come in regardless of his betting ban come January. I doubt it'll be from United, but you never know. He'd do bits for us, Arsenal, and Chelsea - all who need a true CF.

Dusan Vlahovic - Strong at Fiorentina, Vlahovic only managed 14 goals and 4 assists in 42 appearances this season. Rumour has it that The Old Lady are willing to part ways, especially considering money troubles rumoured, but all my spidey senses are tingling and saying do not buy when it comes to the Serbian. Fellow Serb and United great Nemanja Vidic, interviewed on Rio Ferdinand's FIVE channel, said he wouldn't be suited to United, and it's fair to see why given the struggles as a lone forward for Juventus. He needs a dedicated no10 or strike partner to play off. He'd be fantastic alongside someone like Joao Felix, and that wouldn't be an impossible loan acquisition, but United style would be more likely to use Felix as a deep striker or false 9 with Rashford and RW overlapping ala Salah and Mane to Firmino.

With an estimated attendance of over 15 million spectators, the sport is poised for a significant financial boost. The global broadcasting rights alone surpass £10 billion, while the average value of clubs stands at £1.2 billion, indicating the immense wealth within the sport. However, the costs incurred by clubs are also on the rise, particularly in player acquisitions. Earlier this year, Enzo Fernandez's transfer from Benfica to Chelsea shattered the previous record, costing a staggering £106 million. Despite the lucrative nature of football, ticket prices have been steadily increasing due to limited stadium capacity and growing demand. Recent research conducted by SeatPick reveals that, with the exception of four teams, all 20 clubs have raised their ticket prices for the upcoming season, with some implementing more substantial increases than others. In May, Luton Town achieved victory over Coventry on penalties in the Sky Bet Championship play-off, securing the final promotion spot and earning their place in the Premier League for the first time since 1991. SeatPick conducted an analysis of 50 different ticket websites and determined the average cost of attending each team's games this season. According to their findings, Luton Town's fans will face the highest prices for seats.
