The Ojja-Wojja by Magdalene Visaggio and Jenn St-Onge
Trans rep: 7/10
General enjoyment: 9/10
Age rating: all ages
I actually discovered this one when I took my little sister to the library and was looking through kids books with her. There are two main characters, Val (who’s autistic) and Lanie (who’s a trans girl), and they are best friends joined together by a shared status as social outcasts. The characters are also really into occult stuff and-long story short-they end up summoning a demon that then takes over the body of the school bully.
I rated the trans rep on this one a bit low because, to be honest, it just isn’t crucial to the story. I dont want this to make it seem like there’s anything wrong with the comic though, in fact quite the opposite! This is one of my favorite children’s graphic novels I’ve read in a long time. It’s unabashedly queer and alternative but it also allows the characters to grow into complex and interesting people undefined by their identities and interests.
Please read this one if you get a chance and also remember to visit your local library 🐱

Middle School Monday: The Ojja-Wojja by Magdalene Visaggio, illustrations by Jenn St-Onge
When Val’s teacher gives her permission to do a project about the supernatural history of their town, she thinks this will be a great opportunity to partner with Lanie, who loves magic. But their exploring leads them to accidentally summon a dangerous being called the Ojja-Wojja, which has the power to make their lives miserable by turning everyone else in the town of Bolingbroke against them.
This book will take readers on an adventure filled with humor, sarcasm, and supernatural thrills. It also has a pod people / Invasion of the Body Snatchers vibe that will make it hard to put down. And Jenn St-Onge’s dark and scary illustrations are the icing on the creepy cake!
Give this book to older kids who enjoy paranormal stories with lots of twists and turns, or any readers who would enjoy "a horror-mystery, or whatever."

Got this for L for their birthday. I didn't shy away from saying it's illustrated by "the same person who did two of my covers", because I'm that kind of dork.

Just finished reading my graphic novels from the library…. Did not intent to pick two books with queer protagonists (grabbed the ojja wojja from a pride stand tho)
I really enjoyed both though. Graphic novels are truly my bestie.
Anyway quick pitches on both of them bc I want to talk abt them:
The Ojja Wojja a horror mystery or whatever: largely narrated by an autistic 8th grade girl who loves fantasy and sci-fi and fiction and her queer bff and they accidentally/on purpose summon a demon and deal w the repercussions. It’s age 10+ so was very light and fun. Sooo good.
Look Again: a memoir about the time the author found a dead body while walking her dogs & unraveling the trauma that came from that and doing a little exploration with art. Covers heavy subjects but wasn’t super dark.
I checked these out yesterday and have finished both already I love. Comics. Also both are published within the last couple years.
Next on my list: book I bought at the queer book fair, also to see if I can borrow the other one I was considering buying from Rowan since they have it
