He watched the other heroes walking ahead of him. Limping, dragging their feet, leaning on eachother. It had been nonstop walking, a portal to somewhere even further from anywhere, and more walking.

"I know what you mean," Sky piped up from Time's side.

He nearly made the man jump. Nearly. The armor rattling and Sky's cheeky grin were mere coincidences.

"I can carry you," Wind's weary, half alert voice drifted up to Time from where Sky was holding him on piggyback.

"Sound's great, kid," Time felt his face pull into a lopsided smile.

1931 Vampire AU!

For those unaware, I wrote a bit of a neat Linked Universe setting AU last year that I haven't done much with, but I really like it and want to share a bit more about it! Links to the existing fics where relevant.

The series on AO3 is here!

(It would also be fun to develop this AU a little more, and I'd like to draw some stuff for it, so if you send in an ask about it, I might answer with a doodle. ;) )

AU basics: a hidden magic world in America, the year 1931 after WWI. None of the boys are human (except Twilight, at least at first), but they all think they're hiding magic from everyone else, at least for a time. :) There are a lot of magical peoples in this world, organized in their own ways, e.g. merfolk kingdoms, fae courts, the vampire councils, entire hidden cults, and hunter organizations. Ganon exists, but he's a hidden threat that they've all faced in one way or another.

Character summaries!

Wind: the focus of this AU. (The original fic was an excuse to make him very cool.) He was born 1696 in Florida ish, at the height of the golden age of piracy. He was turned into a vampire by Tetra in about 1710 and is eternally physically 14. He sailed with her crew (all pirates) for a few decades. She was invited to the western vampire council in Spain in 1750 as the vampire pirate queen, but... stuff went down. (fic: Body and Soul Marooned) She and her whole crew died, along with a lot of vampires. Wind survived, getting a nice angsty scene in there where they said wedding vows as she died, and went on to try and warn other councils about the upcoming massacres. Because most vampires died during that time, Wind is one of the oldest vampires still alive, and most who survived that time owe their lives to him.

Warriors: the secondary focus of this AU. He was a legitimate soldier during WWI, proper age and everything. When Wind enlisted, Wars took it upon himself to guide this seemingly young kid, and got killed doing so. Wind turned him into a vampire, not wanting him to die. (fic: In the Chill of Battle) He has a fun relationship with Wind, both of them taking the big-brother role in turns. Wars is a younger vampire, but his brain and body was able to mature more, so. Before Wars knew Wind, he was also captain of a division with Time, not that Time remembers that right off. Wars acts the responsible adult, so he gets them both hired as part of Time's team.

Time: he's Twilight and Wild's uncle. When he was a kid, he was whisked away to Faerie and replaced by a changeling for a few years. He fought his way back to find that time had passed differently for him, so he's mentally older than he appears. He didn't get out without being touched by the fae, and is beholden to some of their rules. He's the only one old enough to have enlisted in the military at a legal age, and used his status as a veteran to get a job at a local police station as a sort of detective. That's how he collects all the boys. :)

Wild: half-vampire. He's aging slowly, but still aging. He's close to Twilight, but always felt like he didn't exactly belong. Vampires as an organization don't believe there are many dhampirs out there, and don't like them, but a few underground cells have been organizing. Wild had a few run-ins with them. He's aware of a lot more magic than people think he is, having networked out to several kinds of magical peoples. The Yiga are a cult of shapeshifters that are out for his blood. (fic: Caged) He joined the team when the existing members came to save him and Twilight from them, later in the "story." Wild is one of those in the group willing to do Mad Science. :)

Twilight: is human. He dealt with Wild his whole life, so he's aware of vampires, but not much else. Over the course of the "story," he gets turned into a werewolf, so all of the boys get to deal with that.

Sky: he's a lynchpin of the team! Without Sky, not everyone would be there. He's an air elemental by birth, fairly important in those familial circles but mostly separated from them these days. His natural form is not exactly... physical. He knows Time from the war (he enlisted at too young an age near the end, and didn't see much combat, but made connections), Legend from some of what Legend did (aka everything, but specifically some merchant connections in this case), and found Four on his own. Sky doesn't count as fae at all, but he's in-tune with the environment and flow of magic around him. (He's not happy about the dust bowl.) He is pretty oblivious to the others being magical, though.

Four: he's rather disconnected from the others, in terms of backstory. To understand him, you have to know that there are six courts of the fae: one for each season in the wheel, with a light and a dark in the center and outside. Four grew up in the Light Court, full fae. One of the princess's Minish advisors betrayed the Light Court and gave power to the Dark (hi Vaati), and Four helped to restore balance. In the process, he had to change. The courts didnt generally trust each other, so Four split into four fae with the help of magic, one for each seasonal court. More magic and betrayal happened, and Four is semi-stuck as a Dark fae now. He can become a shadow and hide in other shadows, but he's vulnerable to light in general. When he left Faerie for the mortal world, he found Sky, who pretty much adopted him as a little brother. He's very protective of Sky.

Legend: is a prince of one of the merfolk kingdoms. He saved each of the underwater kingdoms at least once, then ventured to the surface to find more wrongs that needed righting. He isn't obvious about it, but he has a good heart. He's kind of sort of employed as a spy and informant, but he focuses on supernatural issues. He's more of a special ops agent than anything, though he does like to find people who'll pay him for doing what he wants to do anyway. He's been practically everywhere and done practically everything. He definitely heard of Wind, but didn't connect the dots right off. Merfolk aren't considered fae, but his particular family line made contracts with fae long ago, and he has some of their geases in a lightened form. He figured out pretty quickly that everyone was magic and trying to hide it.

Hyrule: is full fae, like Four, but of the Spring Court. He lived in the human world his whole life, a street kid who had to keep his fae nature tightly under wraps, which could get difficult around the promises and names and iron of daily life. He moved around a lot. He was captured for a year or two by unscrupulous scientists and rescued by Legend, who took him to Sky and Time. (fic: EPISODE SEVEN: Lost and Found) He's the resident healer and mad scientist.

Other Fics

More Than You Can Chew: the beginning of the "story." Starts with Wars confessing he's a vampire, and then they go rescue Wind, who's been captured by wannabe hunters.

Council: sort-of ongoing fic about Wind taking the rest of the Chain to the latest vampire council meeting. >:)

Tis A Curse

They’re trans your honor 🥲

Yeah, maybe he should’ve asked Malon for a pad before they left. He knew it was only a matter of time before his uterus acted up again. Not even the goddess could save him from that.

So who should he ask? The Champion? He had suspected that the Champion was…like him for a while now. Maybe the Champion was just high on testosterone which didn’t make sense but it kind of did and he was really panicking because the only thing keeping the others from seeing the red stain on his pants was his white sailcloth.

His white sailcloth. Red was so obvious on white.

He swore by the goddesses that, as soon as he could, he was getting his uterus taken out. His hatred was not for no reason.

Sky reached back and touched the cloth every once in a while, making sure his blood hadn’t stained his gift.

His legs were in agony. He was a lot slower than usual and part of him felt bad, but the other part of him was in pain. When he had started to take testosterone, he was told that his period was supposed to stop.

Did it? No. No it didn’t. His cramps only got worse. It was like he was being stabbed with every step he took. Not only that, but it was your stomach that was supposed to hurt, not your thighs. He felt every ounce of pain in his thighs.

He had dealt with this since he was at least nine. He could deal with it now, but he really wanted to sit on something. Even if it was a rock with moss all over it.

Now he was on watch for the night. Even sitting down didn’t soothe his aching thighs. He had taken his pants off and washed as much blood as he could out of it, but he was sure they were trashed.

The bad thing about having a three day period, is that, all three of those days, his flow was relentless. If he didn’t have a pad on him, his pants were going into the trash.

Without having pants, he was cold. So, he went searching for other pants.

He went to Wild’s bag, hoping to find some pads. He searched for at least five minutes. There was nothing. Sky gave up on pads at that moment and just went searching for pants.

He searched Warriors’s bag first. His pants looked like tights.

He creeped towards Twilight’s bag next, Twilight twitched in his sleep. Sky backed away.

His last hope was Time’s bag. He unzipped it and began his search. He found pants pretty quickly. And they looked comfortable. Then his curiosity overcame him. He glanced at Time, his body was facing the opposite direction of Sky, but that was only because he had turned over not to long ago.

Sky thought about it for a second before he started to do a deep search of his bag.

Sky found three masks. One mask’s eyes were hollowed out, which made the other two hazards because Time couldn’t see with them on. The mask with the hollowed eyes had markings similar to Time’s. He found that interesting.

He kept digging against his morals. What could he say? He was a noisy guy.

He felt something that felt and sounded like a trash bag. He questioned what it was for a few seconds before he pulled it out.

It was a small square and squishy. Sky had never seen this brand before, but he sure knew what it was.

“Yes!” He whisper yelled, “Yes! Yes! Yes!” He cheered.

He searched to see how many Time had. There were at least twenty in there. Time wouldn’t mind if he took five, would he?

He took five pads and zipped up Times bag. He then circled back for the pants he was stealing. Sky practically ran out to the woods so he could get changed.

On his way back, he started to think. Why would Time, of all people, have pads? I mean, maybe if Malon had came that would make more sense, but she didn’t. The only other reason would be…

Sky was suddenly overcome by joy.

Sky reemerged and saw Time sitting up, his severed eye open. Suddenly, Sky’s joy turned into embarrassment. Sky also didn’t like the knowing look Time gave him.

“Good morning,” Sky’s voice cracked.

Time chuckled and patted the grass next to him. Sky sat.

“Okay, yes, I went through your stuff. I’m sorry,” he confessed.

“No, that’s not why I sat you down. I know why you went in my bag. I heard your curses when you searched Wild’s bag. You have quite the mouth, I should say.”

Sky gripped the stolen pants he wore. “Sorry.”

“No sorry.” Time put his hand on Sky's head and pulled it on his shoulder. “I know.”

Sky decided to ask. “Um…are you-“

“Yep.”

“Oh. Me too.” Sky mentally face palmed. Time laughed. “Periods actually suck.” Time hummed. “I mean, I’m probably not even going to have kids!”

“That probably means something in that sentence.”

“Are you going to have kids…that way?”

Time paused for a second before shrugging. “Probably.”

Sky raised his head to look at Time. “Huh? I mean, maybe if Malon was…” Sky stopped and looked at Time. “No way!”

Time laughed, but nodded. “Yes way.”

Sky gripped Time’s shoulders, put his head on Time’s chest. “How do you both hide it so well! I know Legend was side eyeing me all day. I swear everyone knows because of today!”

“Or maybe it was the chest scars you showed us when we were playing in the river. You know, with the cucco fighting?”

Sky paused for a second. Then he raised his head to look Time in the eyes. “I completely forgot about that.”

Time chuckled. “How do you forget about top surgery?”

“I mean,” Sky reasoned, “It’s been years since. I guess I just forgot that I had boobs.”

Time hummed then he looked up. “Go wake up Warriors, it’s his turn for watch. Well, you technically skipped his watch, but he’s still going tonight.”

“I didn’t skip his watch! It’s-“ Sky looked up at the moon and saw that it was around three or four in the morning. “Oh.”

Time pat Sky’s back. “Go wake him up.”

“Yeah.”

“Ditto,” Wind replied, a stolen scarf over his shoulders and teeth chattering as he huddled in next to Four.

A few moments later found Twilight squishing in beside the both of them, his pelt set over both their shoulders, and Four sighed and leaned into the warmth.

Linked Universe Fanfiction Statistics – Duos

I was interested in what the most common duos are in LU fanfiction, so this happened :D. These statistics are based on tagged fanfictions on AO3 (as of 9am EST 11/08/2023). I'm counting a 'duo' fic as one tagged with "Link 1 & Link 2," like "Twilight & Wild" for example. It does not necessarily mean those characters and/or their relationship are the focus of the fic.

First, here are some totals.

I interpret the percentages like this: if the percentage is higher, that character has the spotlight in more fics; if the percentage is lower, that character is more often a background character.

Some observations here: I don’t think it’s surprising that Wild has the most duo fics. I was surprised that Time’s rank changed so much from total fics to total duo fics. And poor Four has the least of all categories :(

Next, I made graphs of all the duos for each character. I’ll put them here in order of most to least fanfics. NOTE: the lefthand axis has different numbers for each link.

Lastly, I made five ranks for numbers of fanfictions for each specific duo. The ranks are: more than 300 fics, 200-299 fics, 150-199 fics, 100-149 fics, and less than one hundred fics per duo.

Some more observations:

I was very surprised that Legend & Hyrule had the second most. Good for them! I was expecting Warriors & Wind to be higher.

Hyrule and Four make up most of the < 100 category. Wild and Legend don’t show up in that category.

Four, Sky, and Wind are the only ones not in the top category. Four actually doesn’t show up in the top three categories, so none of the duos with Four have more than 150 fics. I also noticed that Wild’s least duo (145 with Four) is Four’s most.

Twilight has the highest range: it goes from 829 – 70. The smallest range is Four: 145 – 51.

There you go! This was super super fun. The autism was going brrrrrrrrr and I worked on this for like 5 hours straight. If anyone has any LU statistics questions, please share them with me! :D:D:D

D.I. Patricia Menzies — not a one-off character, bc she recurs a few times (i think 3 separate audios and then Crimes of Thomas Brewster) in the Six-and-Charley arc, but she's a minor character and SOOOOO beloved to me. she's just so dry and baseline exasperated but still optimistic, and the way she's able to just roll with the punches and work SO WELL in whatever wild circumstances she finds herself is... she's just so generally chill and adaptable and steady, plus she won't put up with Sixie's crap dhdjdhs. still upset that they left a loose end for her to possibly return as a companion and then she DIDN'T.

Samson (and Gemma, but mostly Samson) from Terror Firma — he was such a good boy, and exactly the kind of friend Charley needed at that point in her arc.
