Here is another TGAA OC I commissioned from an amazing artist on Twitter, please click the link to give support there too, I will appreciate it great as will Murple, and go give them a follow if you have a Twitter.
Meet Arlene Idler. She’s the Irene Adler to Herlock’s Sherlock of my TGAA story I’m planning. She has many aliases, one you see above called “Ranee Riled”. She’s a rather fun and funny character. I can’t wait to talk about her more in the future.

My wonderful friend @just-absolutely-super commissioned this beautiful art for me as a gift from the amazingly talented @iwonn-arts.
A minor character OC for a fic I’m planning for TGAA. Barok’s wife, Lisa van Zieks. She and Barok were arranged to be married but it’s a happily arranged marriage over time.
This commission is so beautiful I still adore it to bits.

I've just completed the first ace attorney trilogy. I've been wanting to play the great ace attorney chronicles, So how does Ryunosuke compare to Phoenix since Ryunosuke is his ancestor?
Ryunosuke Naruhodo and Phoenix Wright – These two characters, albeit from different time periods, embody the essence of a defense attorney in the Ace Attorney universe, each with their unique flair and style.
Ryunosuke Naruhodo is a 19th-century rookie lawyer from Japan. On the other hand, Phoenix Wright, the face of the "Ace Attorney" series, is a modern-day defense attorney practicing in Japanifornia. Despite the century that separates them, they share a common lineage – Ryunosuke is Phoenix’s ancestor.
The first thing you notice is their personalities. Phoenix is the more laid-back and humorous of the two. He's famous for his 'turnabouts' in court, where he flips the entire case around, often in the most theatrical way possible. He's also got a knack for pulling together clues from out of nowhere, using his 'Psyche-Lock' ability to tell when someone's hiding something.
Ryunosuke, meanwhile, is more earnest and serious. He's less experienced and more naïve, which is often reflected in his courtroom behavior - he's prone to panic and self-doubt, but he's also incredibly determined and tenacious. Ryunosuke doesn’t have any special abilities like Phoenix, but he’s got the help of his witty legal assistant, Susato Mikotoba, and the legendary detective Herlock Sholmes.
Their lawyering styles are a reflection of their personalities. Phoenix’s approach is largely intuitive. He's not afraid to take risks, often bluffing his way through the trials, and he's always ready with a last-minute piece of evidence or a surprise witness. Ryunosuke's approach, on the other hand, is more methodical. He relies heavily on logic and deduction, using the 'Deduction' mechanic in the game to piece together the truth.
The historical contexts in which they practice law also shape their experiences as attorneys. Ryunosuke practices law in a time when Japan is just opening up to the West, and he has to navigate the cultural and legal differences as he studies in Britain. His cases often involve cross-cultural misunderstandings and biases, and he has to fight against the prejudice and suspicion of being a foreigner.
Phoenix, on the other hand, practices in a judicial system where the odds are heavily stacked in favor of the prosecution, and the defense is often fighting an uphill battle. His experiences reflect the issues of the modern legal world, such as corruption, media influence on trials, and the struggle of proving innocence in a system where 'guilty until proven innocent' is the norm.
So, there you have it. Phoenix and Ryunosuke, while sharing a professional lineage and a strong sense of justice, are distinct in their personalities, their lawyering styles, and the challenges they face in their respective times. Phoenix, with his intuitive style and turnabout tactics, and Ryunosuke, with his deductive reasoning and cultural navigation, offer two different, yet equally compelling, takes on the role of the defense attorney in the Ace Attorney universe.

Just for fun, since I mentioned them in the tags of that other post, I'm gonna rank the musicals I got to see this year (mostly just as an excuse to gush about them all). Note that the scores will solely represent my personal taste and do not necessarily reflect the quality of the shows themselves.
This is gonna be a long post.
In chronological order for when I saw them:
Turnabout: An Ace Attorney Musical 9.5/10 A young lawyer fights a corrupt system to save his clients from death row, and also there are ghosts involved. This is a completely fan-made, full-length musical adaptation of the first entry in the Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney series. A better adaptation of a video game than basically every game-based movie ever made, combined. The writers nailed it, the composers nailed it, the performers nailed it... It's one of my new favorites, and a must-watch for any fans of the games. It's funny and heartwarming but with real emotional depth at its most climactic moments. Also, spoiler alert: these lawyers are gay. Favorite song: "Alone"
SIX the Musical 6/10 (You see what I did there? lol) A conversation between the six wives of King Henry VIII as they determine which of them was done dirtiest by this dirtiest of men. (For those unaware, two of his wives were famously beheaded, two more were divorced, and even the one he supposedly loved died young.) This show is... more of a concert than a musical? The songs themselves are all bangers, if I'm honest, but the "story" is pretty cheesy and shallow--mostly just an excuse to give each of the wives a reason to sing their stories--hence the low score from me. Definitely worth giving a listen, though, if you're a fan of female pop singers, since each wife's song is in the style of a famous artist (Beyoncé, Avril Lavigne, Adele, Rihanna/Nicki Minaj, Ariana Grande/Britney Spears, and Alicia Keyes, respectively). Favorite song: "Get Down"
Wicked 10/10 The now-classic prequel to the Wizard of Oz, telling the story of the Wicked Witch of the West before she became so feared. One of my perennial favorites, with extra bonus points for the tickets being my birthday present this year. Not the first time I've seen the show live, nor even the first time I've seen it at this particular theater, but it was a great performance nonetheless. Really made me think deeply about the themes of antifascism and apathy this time around. Favorite song: "For Good"
Beautiful: The Carol King Musical 6.5/10 A biography of singer and songwriter Carol King. The songs were all famous hits that she'd composed, written, and/or sung, and it was a fascinating look into the life and career of a woman I'd never even known the name of before. Also an educational look into the music industry of the 60s and 70s--she composed for a lot of famous black artists of the time! Biographies aren't my thing--and especially not ones with toxic relationships as large focal points--but it was much more fun and interesting than I expected. As it is, though, between it being a jukebox musical and a historical mid-20th-century piece, I can't personally rate it any higher. Great music, though, regardless. Favorite Song: "It Might As Well Rain Until September" (not the best SONG in the show by any stretch, but the most memorable story beat for sure! It's the song that she composed as a teen that got her her first big break)
Beauty and the Beast 7.5/10 The Disney classic. And one of my absolute favorites from Disney, which is why I maybe had too high of expectations for the live version, haha. I was personally a little let down by some of the effects--the puppeteering was good, but a little abstract sometimes. It was still just as fun and lovely as you'd expect a Disney show to be, but I remember coming away from it thinking that it was definitely aimed more at the kids in the audience. Worth it, but not among my favorites of the year. Favorite song: "Human Again" (a song so good I still can't believe it was cut from the movie!)
Chess 10/10 A sociopolitical drama about two chess grandmasters--one Soviet and one American--set against the backdrop of the Cold War. I'm obsessed. This musical has LAYERS--and I don't just mean within the musical motifs, although that is also true! The main character, despite his best efforts not to pick a side, becomes an unwilling pawn himself in all the political scheming. And alongside the competition and the international tension, there's a love story that becomes the emotional core of the play. It's tragic, heart-wrenching, and tense as all hell, but an absolutely underappreciated musical that I hope will get more widespread attention as a result of this performance at the Muny! (Oh yeah, and the music is a collab between Tim Rice [of Jesus Christ Superstar fame] and ABBA?? Basically it's the most 80s thing ever conceived.) Favorite song: "Where I Want to Be"
West Side Story 7/10 You know West Side Story. It's Romeo and Juliet but with a gang war in 1950s New York. This was the first time I'd ever actually seen it, and I'm glad I finally got around to it. Not really my thing, honestly--seen one Romeo and Juliet, seen 'em all, frankly--but even I can recognize the choreography was incredible. This show has a LOT of elaborate dancing by today's musical standards (also not my thing), and by far the best part of the show was the knife fight scene on the Muny's giant turntable floor. That part was so mindblowing that it bumps the overall score up a couple points on its own. Favorite song: "America"
Little Shop of Horrors 9/10 A poor, unlucky florist gains fame and fortune by befriending a bloodthirsty alien plant. Hilarious, a little dark, and with more depth and earnest emotion than most people probably expect from something so silly and camp. Possibly my single favorite musical, so, automatic win. This production gets a little bit of a demerit for the really odd design of Audrey II and the immersion-breaking puppetry that went along with it, but they earned most of it back when a 30-foot-tall Audrey II actually WALKED OUT FROM BEHIND THE BACKDROP and loomed over the performers while they sang the finale. It was terrifying and awesome and I was absolutely yelling and applauding. Favorite song: "Somewhere That's Green"
Rent 8/10 A year in the life of some artist friends living through the height of the AIDS epidemic. It's a beloved piece of queer history and rightfully so--the tragedies hit hard, and the celebration of love and life hits even harder. I'm personally kind of ambivalent about the show. I have my criticisms, but I recognize its cultural importance and I'm not fool enough to deny that a few of the songs are among the best from all of Broadway. (Yeah yeah, I know all of the words to "La Vie Bohème", alright? The music's amazing.) This production was kind of neat, too--definitely enjoyed it more than I did the movie! Favorite song: "La Vie Bohème"
Sister Act 8.5/10 A lounge singer witnesses a murder and is forced to become a nun at a nearby convent for witness protection. She's not very good at laying low, so hilarity ensues. I'd never seen the film it's based on, so I had NO idea what to expect from this show going in, but I actually kind of loved it. It was consistently hilarious, the characters were all extremely charming, and the emotional beats in the second half were lovely and heartfelt. I love that the ending not only has such a strong message of found family, but also that there is no pressure at all on the lead character to actually join the religion, even though she's welcome to visit the other nuns anytime. If anything, it's more of a story about appreciating their differences! Plus, the show's got a singing Pope. What more could you want? (...oh snap, and I forgot this is another Alan Menken musical. No wonder the songs are all so good!) Favorite song: "Bless Our Show"
Beetlejuice the Musical 7/10 A teenage girl, feeling alone and invisible after the loss of her mother, finds out that her new home is haunted by ghosts. She enlists their help in scaring her father's weird business partners, but one ghost is a little more, uh, wacky? insane? ...unhinged than the others. In my opinion, this musical was intended to be watched by fans of the movie, but either way it works alright. It's a little awkwardly structured at times thanks to Beetlejuice's constant Deadpool-style fourth wall breaking--I could do without so much of that, personally--but most of the songs are solid enough and it's still very funny, with the kind of perfectly cartoonish characters that only Tim Burton could have produced. Despite any shortfalls it might have, though, I have to give this one extra marks for genuinely bringing me to tears in its second act. I was not expecting it, but I'm dead serious. Yeah. There's really good storytelling about grief and healing in the "tally me banana" musical. I know. Favorite song: "No Reason"
HONORABLE MENTION because I didn't see this one as a live show or as a major online premiere or anything, but it WAS the first time I'd ever watched it (plus this rounds out the list to a nice dozen!):
Legally Blonde the Musical 9.5/10 After getting dumped, a woman gets into Harvard Law to show her ex that she's worthy of his love, only to realize that being a lawyer is more fulfilling anyway. This musical effing rules. It's even better than the movie it's based on, which was already good. It's SO funny from start to finish, every single song is catchy as hell, and it's empowering and feel-good and even a little cathartic at times. There's a song that includes a dog barking on cue, there's an Ace Attorney-style courtroom scene where the clue that breaks the case is how gay the witness is, and there's an actual love story in the back half that manages to be sweet and good despite all this chaos. I'm so sad that I missed out on seeing this one live at the Muny by a single year. :( Oh well, I'll catch it next time...! Favorite song: "So Much Better"
P.S. labeling all of those as my "favorite" songs is such a lie, lmao. My favorite song for some of these changes with the wind. I encourage anyone who's read this far to check out ALL of these musicals in their entirety, because even the ones that weren't my favorites were still really good and a blast to see!

Fic time Fic time! This one is a prequel for @sa-gt-tarrius Tiniest Turnabout! I wanted to write a story about the doctor and his interns and show a bit of their relationship. For the doctor specifically, I wanted to show off his eccentricity and how it relates to his students.
Spoilers Ahead
“Yes, Yes, I understand. Thank you again so much! And sorry again for the inconvenience.” Dr. Roscope closed the lab door with a sigh, took a breath, and faced his pupils with a smile.
Waiting anxiously behind the counter were his three assistants. First there was Finn McTesimal, a prodigy in his own right, barely out of high school and already having shown incredible promise. He was seated in a rolling chair with a worried face as he tugged on the ends of his still smoking scarf. Standing off to the side with her arms crossed was Minnie Ature. Her patience knew no end, made clear by her unperturbed expression. Surely, this ship would have sunk ages ago if she wasn’t around, something Mike was endless grateful for. Finally, seated next Finn, absentmindedly tapping a pencil against the desk was Lily Putian. Truly, the brains of their whole operation. It had been ages since he last encountered someone who could take his larger than life ideas and turn them in something tangible. He only wished Lily would push herself to think of outlandish ideas of her own, she could benefit from thinking outside the box so to speak.
All eyes turned to the doctor, “Well kids, I have -“
Before the words left his lips, the three finished for him, “Good news and bad news?”
“Ah, glad to see we are all on the same page. Great minds think alike and all that,” Dr. Roscope grabbed a stool and a chalkboard and dragged them in front of the counter as if setting up for a lecture, “Bad news, obviously being that our field test was a failure and I have just been ‘strongly urged’ that we cease any continuation of the project effective immediately.”
As to be expected there we groans of discontent and comments of disbelief. Dr. Roscope didn’t do anything to dissuade them from letting out their frustrations, they had every right to be upset.
Minnie, doing her best to remain level headed, raised her hand, “So, what’s the good news?”
The doctor clapped his hands together with content, “Thank you for asking! The good news is that the field test only caused minimal damage to the west building, only breaking that one window. And the resulting fire was quickly extinguished before anyone got hurt.”
“Well,” Lily spoke up half-heartedly, “That’s a relief.”
There was beat of quiet before Finn shot up from his seat, startling Lily, “Doctor, I’m so sorry! I really didn’t think a fire would break out.”
Dr. Roscope step forward, “There’s no need to apologize Finn. I don’t think any of us could have foreseen the wind blowing away your scarf the way that it did. It was an accident and as far as Freddy’s concerned, entirely my responsibility.”
Finn noticed the doctor give him a wink at that last statement and he sat back down with weary smile. Both Lily and Minnie comforted Finn as the doctor continued.
“Now that we have all that out of the way we can spend the rest of our afternoon together, that being,” He glanced down at his watch, “The next twenty or so minutes, brainstorming our next major project for the semester.”
Roscope began erasing the the chalkboard. Lily cringed as she witnessed all their research and impromptu notes they took such care not to smudge over the course of the semester be erased in an instant. When Roscope was done, any writing on the board was completely illegible but he didn’t bother erasing any of the smudges. With no concern for the mess still left on the board, the good doctor wrote in the top corner with large surprisingly visible letters, “Project Ideas.”
“Now remember, in this lab, there are no bad ideas,” He took a seat on the stool, leaning forward in anticipation, “Just uncreative ones that aren’t worth perusing. That being said, what are we thinking?”
There was a pause as Finn, Minnie, and Lily silently deliberated amongst themselves.
Finn spoke up first, “Well, maybe we can make something to help students who are running late make it to class on time?”
“Yes, that’s a problem, now what’s a solution?”
Minnie chimed in, “How about a better alarm clock?” Lily and the doctor chuckled.
The joke completely flew over Finn’s head, “Oh well, I was actually thinking more about student on campus who might have a long way to walk between classes?”
“In that case, we could create plan for a campus wide transportation system? Maybe we could use a tram-“
“That’s a good idea Lily, but perhaps we can push that idea bit more? How can we get students to their classes in an instant?”
“Doctor, are you talking about teleportation?”
.
..
“Yes! YES! Teleportation! BRILLIANT IDEA FIINN! Let me just right this down.”
“Hold it,” Lily interjected as Dr. Roscope sporadically scribbled on the chalkboard, “Teleportation? Is that a little to far outside the realm of possibility to be considered? How would that even work?”
“We could set teleportation stations around campus! Oh OH! Or we could make it like a phone app and you just input where you need to be and then your just there!”
“That’s a neat plan Finn, but I think what Lily was trying to get across was how would we even go about making teleportation technology. We’d be breaking quite a few laws of physics.”
“When will you girls understand? Your minds are capable of coming up with limitless possibilities that we can make real if we put our minds together. Stop limiting your thinking because of things as inconsequential as the laws of physics. Laws were made to be broken, damnit!”
“Sorry Doc,” Minnie merely shrugged, “Not saying it’s impossible, just saying it’s going to be really hard to break those kinds of laws. Besides teleportation’s probably not the wisest idea, Jeff Goldblum could tell you that much.”
“Hmm, you may be right. Probably shouldn’t risk a lawsuit…. Do you have any other ideas?”
Dr. Roscope specifically tuned his gaze to Minnie, she had the floor. Minnie had to think for moment. She wanted to propose something practical, but heaven forbid she suggest something “uncreative.”
“Flight.”
“Flight?” Finn Questioned.
Lily contested, “We already have planes.”
“Ok, let me rephrase then, personal flight.”
Lily and Finn eyed each other. Dr. Roscope could only smile, “Go on, Minnie.”
“Well, if we’re pitching crazy ideas then I’d like make personal flight possible. I’m not suggesting we sprout a pair of wings but-“
“Buuuuuut,” The doctor interrupted with that face Minnie knew all to well, “What if we had bones like a bird instead!?”
Finn’s eyes lit up, Minnie facepalmed, and Lily could only watch with concern as the doctor wrote out his idea on the board.
“Yes, if we could make a formula that could safely hollow out human bones, we could possibly achieve flight without the need for any mechanics! What a wonderfully inventive idea Minnie!”
“Thanks?” Could she really take credit when her idea was snubbed like that?
“Absolutely not,” Lily stood up from her seat and approached the board, “Dr. Roscope, with all due respect this doesn’t seem at all practical, let alone possible. I know you want us to think big but maybe there’s a way we can think big and with in the realm of possibility?”
Dr. Roscope was now face to face with Lily. He could see the determination in her eyes, “Did you have something in mind?”
“Yes, actually.”
“Then by all means,” The doctor placed the chalk in Lily’s hand and walked to the counter to join Minnie and Finn.
“Thank You.”
Lily took care to erased everything off the board, smudges included. She then spent the next few minutes proposing several project that could benefit the school. She had bullet points, pros and con lists, and even a few rough outlines, it was all very well thought out.
When she finished Dr. Roscope clapped and returned to the board to get a closer look at her work, “Very well done Lily. I believe all the projects you proposed would be really useful.”
Lily saw his face. He was smiling and studying her notes with genuine curiosity, but she could see it in his eyes.
“You do like any of them… do you?”
Only for a brief moment did Dr. Roscope attempt to fake surprise but he reigned himself to his fate. He let out a sigh, he was caught. He shook his head.
“Of course not. Why would you like anything I propose?”
“What do you mean?”
“What do I- Doctor, the entire time I’ve been here it feels like nothing I suggest is meets your standards. I know you appreciate my work ethic and contributions when we actually have something to work on but why does it feel,” Lily paused, searching for her words, “Am I not good enough for you?”
“What? Lily, of course not! You’re here because I want you to be here. I ask for your opinions and ideas because I want to hear them-“
“Then why do you never seem to listen?”
“Lily I- You see the- What I want from-“
Dr. Roscope struggled to get his thoughts together. He continued to stammer for a bit while Finn, Minnie, and Lily exchanged concerned looks. Finally Dr. Roscope found his voice.
“A great scientist’s legacy lies in what they discover, what do they learn or create that changes the way each and everyone one on this planet perceives the world around them,”
Dr. Roscope strolled over to the stool and sat down. His face displayed the most… earnest expression any of them had seen since… well, ever.
He continued, “But a great teacher’s legacy lies in their students. You three are some of the most incredible, talented, and creative minds I’ve had the pleasure to call my students. I want you to know that I see myself in each of you. Every time you walk through that door I see pieces of my reflection come together and I can’t help but be proud. And call me a selfish man but years down the line when you’ve long since graduated, and I’m a crazy old fart, I hope you visit me from time to time. Regale me with tales of how you changed the world, and I’ll know my legacy’s secure.”
“Doc, you already are a crazy old fart.”
The doctor couldn’t help but laugh, Minnie’s quick wit strikes again, “I suppose my reputation does proceed me. But believe me when I say you get crazier with age.”
“Oh I believe it.”
“Ultimately my goal with this internship isn’t to make an impact on the world, it’s to make an impact on you. If we happen to change the world in the process, that’s even better,” Dr. Roscope once again turned his attention to Lily, “I’m sorry that I ever made you think you were not good enough. I just want you to think outside the box more. Don’t ask ‘Is it Possible?’ Ask ‘Can I make it possible?”
“Thanks”
*Beep* *Beep*
Dr. Roscope checked his watch, “Alright that’s time. I won’t keep you here longer than you need to be, I know you’ve all got rides to catch.”
Finn, Minnie, and Lilly gathered their things. After grabbing her bag Minnie put her hand on Lily’s shoulder (Which was admittedly a bit awkward considering the height difference but hey what can you do.)
“You’re doing great.”
Finn chimed in, “Yeah, we’re all lucky to have you here.”
“Thanks guys, that means a lot.”
Minnie and Finn stepped out of the room to head home but Lily found herself hesitant to leave just yet.
“Doctor?”
“Hmm? Yes, Lily?”
“I’m sorry for lashing out the way I did. That was uncalled for.”
“No, please don’t apologize. You have every right to speak your mind and if you ever need to talk to me about something like that again, I’ll be here. I’m also going to review your project ideas, see if maybe we can start one of them this week.”
Lily nodded and reach for the door knob before stopping herself again.
“A size encapsulator…”
“I’m sorry?”
“That’s my out of the box, if I could do the impossible, idea. I’d make a size encapsulator.”
“That is a revolutionary idea. Thank you, Lily. Get home safe!”
“Likewise.”
Feeling much better, Lily stepped outside and headed home.
—————————
The next day Minnie and Finn found themselves in the lab alone. Minnie had brought her sewing kit so to pass the time she began patching up Finn’s scarf while he watched with awe.
“Wow, I can barely see the seams! You’re really good at this.”
“Yeah well,” Minnie finished up her patch job and cut the thread with her teeth, “You pick up a thing or two working at a craft store”
Minnie handed the finished scarf back to Finn who happily wrapped around his neck. He studied the area Minnie had fixed with wonder.
“Can you teach me how sew like you?
But Minnie was distracted looking at the wall clock.
“It’s been twenty minutes.”
“Do you think they’re ok? I mean after yesterday…”
“Lily and Doc are fine. If there’s a problem, they are more than capable of talking it out. Let’s be really, do you think either of them would resort to avoiding the other?”
“You’re right. They’re probably running late.”
As if on cue, the door the lab burst open with dramatic vigor startling both Minnie and Finn. An extremely excited Dr. Roscope comes through.
“I AM HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE HAVE OUR SEMESTER PROJECT AND,” Dr. Roscope gestures behind him to Lily who followed him inside. She has several papers up to her face, her eyes glued to it pages, “It’s all Lily’s idea.”
“Oh wow, that- that’s great,” Finn smiled, relived they seemed to be on good terms, “so which one is it?”
Dr. Roscope dashed up to the chalkboard erasing all the notes Lily wrote the day before, “None of these!”
“Doc, if it’s none of her suggestions from yesterday-“
“Ah but it was,” He turned to Lily, “Tell them.”
Lily was still rummaging through the papers, she hadn’t even looked up once. Minnie and Finn approached her to see what she was looking at. The caught glimpses of numbers and hand written formulas, what they added up to they had no clue.
“What is this?” Minnie asked.
Lily finally spoke up her voice slightly shaky, “I-I-I ran into in the hall a-and he ran some numbers and-“
“Numbers on what?” Finn asked.
Dr. Roscope answered, “A size encapsulator!”
“A what?!?”
“It’s just some rough estimates, but if these numbers are correct, which I’m positive they are it means that-“
Lily finally lowered the papers revealing the disbelief on her face, “It’s possible…”
“Wait, are we actually making a shrink ray!?” Finn was practically bouncing, he could barely hide his excitement.
“Are we?”
Minnie asked looking to the doctor for an answer but he didn’t have one. It was clear the doctor was looking to Lily for her answer.
“I- I think we are.”

Analysis of klaviers need for control, esp as a point of similarity to big bro, sounds like 👀 a very interesting 👀 essay hehe
you're all essay-enablers--and i will absolutely take any excuse to overanalyze. this is so incredibly long and i am so sorry.
Okay! So! We're going to go for the comparison here as a primary point of focus because I feel that it's the best way to highlight everything I want to touch on. Klavier and Kristoph are both incredibly meticulous about maintaining control over the way they're perceived by others and also over the scenarios they find themselves in. With Klavier, you see this in his presentation of what's often termed the "rockstar facade"--the affected German (apologies to those who headcanon that it's genuine--with character analysis I am sticking with the canonical 'it's fake' interpretation), the excessive Gavinners branding, the overt flirtatiousness. He wants attention from the media and individuals alike, and ends up concealing his more serious attitude towards the law and justice behind this image.
Kristoph, on the other hand, is the picture of friendly professionalism--the "Coolest Defense In The West" persona. This is mainly observed towards the beginning of Turnabout Trump, as it's what lures the player into a false sense of security before his true nature is revealed. His outward appearance is neat and tidy; he's got minimalist, professional glasses paired with one of the more subdued suits worn in the series. He's prone to smiling, joking, projecting this benign, refined image--though even while he's doing this, he has a tendency to make cutting remarks (observed primarily directed at Apollo at the start of the case: "That screeching noise...is that your voice?" (4-1)) which increase in frequency as his grasp on the situation slips. Kristoph Gavin wants a different kind of attention than his brother--he wants to be seen as the ultimate legal figure; a top defense attorney; a man to whom 'defeat' in court is a foreign concept.
It's somewhat ironic, actually, that Kristoph Gavin is a defense attorney: usually it's the Ace Attorney prosecutors who are hung up on having perfect records. Taken in the wider scheme of AA4's theme of subverting expectations, however, this makes perfect sense.
Maintaining these images is something that takes a great deal of control over both oneself and one's situation. Klavier, of course, has his band and the nebulous concept of "fame"--he leans much more into the rockstar elements as something he can control than he does the prosecutorial elements (which, we might theorize, would be due to his first trial (where he thought he had all the information and full control over the situation) going sideways when Phoenix Wright's reaction to being caught with forged evidence wasn't that of a man who knew about the forged evidence), but that isn't to say he doesn't exert control over both. Klavier is well-informed about the circumstances of all of the cases he prosecutes--indeed, in Turnabout Corner, he actually provides evidence about the fact that vehicles with blocked exhaust pipes won't run, despite this being of absolutely no benefit to his case (and in fact being detrimental, allowing Apollo to come up with more theories that prolong the trial). In Turnabout Serenade, he has access to the most up-to-date evidence that actually contradicts a lot of Ema Skye's testimony--something that he only reveals after she's already presented her forensic findings to the court (possibly in a bid to maintain the arrogant rockstar persona, possibly because they don't really get along well, possibly a bit of both).
When Klavier gets thrown for a loop, such as after the disastrous concert in Turnabout Serenade, he falls back on trying to wrest control of the situation to maintain his image--so when the list of things that have gone wrong are 1) missing keys, 2) broken guitar case, 3) burnt guitar, 4) murder, and 5) missed cue during a song, the only thing that can be immediately addressed and brought back under control is the case of the missed cue. He's got the recording, he can analyze the mic inputs, and then there's one less thing that's throwing a wrench in his ability to be the put-together multi-platinum rockstar that he wants to be seen as. The keys aren't likely to be found without a significant amount of effort, the guitar case and guitar require consultation with someone else to fix, and the dead body at least isn't going anywhere (...or so one would assume).
We can contrast this with Kristoph's reaction to things very much not going his way--though Kristoph has significantly more high-stakes things go wrong, as well as much more of a major need to maintain control over not just situations, but people. It's not a stretch to say that everything in AA4 actually spiraled from Kristoph Gavin's attempt to exert control over Klavier Gavin by ensuring his own victory over him in Klavier's court debut. Kristoph's first disrupted plan, then, was when Zak Gramarye decided to replace him with Phoenix Wright, and he adapted by manipulating the situation so that Klavier would get Wright disbarred for presenting forged evidence. This actually would take care of two situations at once--if Kristoph wanted to be perceived as a star defense attorney, one would imagine Phoenix Wright would pose a threat (especially when he just "stole" Kristoph's client), and it would still cement Kristoph as a trusted source of information in Klavier's mind.
(some of this is bordering on conjecture, but it's not like any of this got expanded upon after AA4 soooo....)
Another example of Kristoph losing control of a situation and taking action to regain that control is the situation in the Borscht Bowl Club--he's got Wright right where he wants him (disbarred and depressed), but everything goes sideways when he recognizes Shadi Enigmar--Zak Gramarye--walking through the door to meet with Wright. I'm not going to pretend that we know exactly why Kristoph killed him (that is, of course, the Major Cliffhanger of the black Psyche-Locks), but I'd hazard a guess that at least part of it was that the most immediate solution to stopping the situation from getting any further out of hand (and destroying Kristoph's 'perfect defense attorney' image, because of course Gramarye would know that he was the only one who could have commissioned the forged diary page) would be to kill Gramarye and frame Phoenix. (Killing Phoenix Wright would have been sloppy--too many people to miss him, and he didn't (as far as Kristoph knew) have enough information to be credible on his own. Zak Gramarye/Shadi Enigmar, on the other hand, had been off the grid for seven years--and was more immediately dangerous).
Ultimately, both Gavin brothers carefully curate their images and are aware of this--they attempt to exercise control over their environments to maintain the persona they desire. However, Kristoph takes this to extremes, directing his controlling urges towards having power over individuals rather than just situations or his own demeanor. They share a desire to be respected and/or admired, though they want this from different audiences. However, where they differ is especially apparent with their attitudes in court--while Kristoph wants a perfect record, Klavier truly just wants to find the actual resolution.
...anyway, I think they're absolutely fascinating as characters and i wish we'd gotten more content following up on everything presented in aa4. I hope this was interesting to read!! and also that it actually makes sense and doesn't get too rambley--it is significantly later than I had intended to stay awake, lmao.
Thank you for the ask and the opportunity to break this down in informal essay format!

Yuta comes in place 2, because he has triggered Athena’s trauma IN PURPOSE for trigger a breakdown and that was not cool.

32. Your opinion on Dai Gyakuten Saiban? I WANT TO PLAY TT
33. Do you think Dai Gyakuten Saiban and/or Miles Edgeworth Investigations 2 will get localised to the West? Maybe it will happen in 2021 for DGS 1 and 2, the rumors seems more accurate this time. (see the news about the hack of Capcom)
34. Do you think Miles Edgeworth should get another Investigation-game or do you think another character deserves a spin-off? YES YES YES A new Investigation with Phoenix, Franziska, Trucy, but then Athena, Fay and Klavier would follow Edegeworth too (he can’t have holiday with his husband, daugther and sister, right?)
A spin-off with Apollo would be nice too but with no Trucy, No Athena, no Klavier?
I would  pass.
Or maybe spin-off with Mia; with Phoenix as student/co-council but without Maya or Miles then
so I would pass too.

41. Opinion on anime cutscenes in Ace Attorney? They are cool =)
42. Would you want to play an Ace Attorney game where you take on the prosecutors role? If Phoenix is the adversaire, we couldn't win XD (welcome in Miles hell guys) Also it would mean all our clients would be guilty right?
43. Do you like having DLC in Ace Attorney-games? YES!! It's just a shame that you have to pay “so mcuh” for them when you already pay the game. But Phoenix defending a orca? Phoenix speak wedding with Miles? TAKE MY MONEY!!!
44. Opinion on Lamiroir’s storyline? Sad. Very sad. Now it would be great if she could talk to her kids. Phoenix is nice to respect her will but both Apollo and Trucy deserve to know.
45. One thing you think the Ace Attorney games can improve on? More Athena, More NaruMitsu. AND APOLLO BETTER TO RETURN!!
46. Capcom suddenly announces an Ace Attorney movie! Would you like it to be based on an already existing case or would you like an all new storyline? Why not do a movie with Rise of Ashes? =) Or a New Storyline But the story better to be cool.
47. Capcom suddenly announces an Ace Attorney movie! Would you prefer it being live-action, 3D animated or 2D animated? Like the anime we already had. The live-action wasn't so cool, compared to the anime.
48. If there could be an Ace Attorney crossover with whatever franchise you’d like, which one would you choose? (Does not need to be a video-game franchise) Hum. Professor Layton again. OR a time travel crossover with the Great Ace Attorney. OR Detective Conan.

Since Father's Day is around the corner, how does Circe & Her Siblings & kids celebrate it? Also, (save for a few of them for personal reasons), how do the phantom thieves celebrate Father's Day?
I haven’t thought about for Persona as I don’t know how they celebrate over there. And it wasn’t really something I thought about so I don’t have any headcanons there yet. I need to look more into it as I prefer to not assume it’s the same where I live.
As for Circe and the others, they do the same as Mother’s Day, breakfast in bed, they all cook something for him that day, for every meal. And the twins don’t get into any mischief that whole day lol. Same for Mother’s Day. They all get gifts for him too, bought or made, it doesn’t matter. Horus has a soft spot for his kids. (Yes even the twins lol).

Happiness Report: World shows resilience in face of COVID-19 (AP) The coronavirus brought a year of fear and anxiety, loneliness and lockdown, and illness and death, but an annual report on happiness around the world released Friday suggests the pandemic has not crushed people’s spirits. The editors of the 2021 World Happiness Report found that while emotions changed as the pandemic set in, longer-term satisfaction with life was less affected. “What we have found is that when people take the long view, they’ve shown a lot of resilience in this past year,” Columbia University economist Jeffrey Sachs, one of the report’s co-author, said from New York.
The Pandemic Stalls Growth in the Global Middle Class, Pushes Poverty Up Sharply (Pew Research Center) The COVID-19 pandemic is having a deep effect on the global economy. In January 2020, as reports of the novel coronavirus were emerging, the World Bank forecasted that the global economy would expand by 2.5% that year. In January 2021, with the pandemic still holding much of the world in its grip, the World Bank estimated that the global economy contracted by 4.3% in 2020, a turnabout of 6.8 percentage points. The economic downturn is likely to have diminished living standards around the world, pushing millions out of the global middle class and swelling the ranks of the poor. A new Pew Research Center analysis finds that the global middle class encompassed 54 million fewer people in 2020 than the number projected prior to the onset of the pandemic. Meanwhile, the number of poor is estimated to have been 131 million higher because of the recession.
Fallout from riot, virus leaves toxic mood on Capitol Hill (AP) The mood is so bad at the U.S. Capitol that a Democratic congressman recently let an elevator pass him by rather than ride with Republican colleagues who voted against certifying Joe Biden’s election. Republicans say it’s Democrats who just need to get over it—move on from the deadly Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, end the COVID-19 restrictions and make an effort to reach across the aisle toward bipartisanship. Not yet 100 days into the new Congress, the legislative branch has become an increasingly toxic and unsettled place, with lawmakers frustrated by the work-from-home limits imposed by the virus and suspicious of each other after the horrific riot over Trump’s presidency. Particularly in the House, which remains partly shuttered by the pandemic and where lawmakers heard gunshots ring out during the siege, trust is low, settled facts about the Jan. 6 riot are apparently up for debate and wary, exhausted lawmakers are unsure how or when the “People’s House” will return to normal.
US schools prepare summer of learning to help kids catch up (AP) After a dreary year spent largely at home in front of the computer, many U.S. children could be looking at summer school—and that’s just what many parents want. Although the last place most kids want to spend summer is in a classroom, experts say that after a year of interrupted study, it’s crucial to do at least some sort of learning over the break, even if it’s not in school and is incorporated into traditional camp offerings. Several governors, including in California, Kansas and Virginia, are pushing for more summer learning. And some states are considering extending their 2021-22 academic year or starting the fall semester early. Many cities, meanwhile, are talking about beefing up their summer school programs, including Los Angeles, Hartford, Connecticut and Atlanta—the latter of which considered making summer school compulsory before settling for strongly recommending that kids who are struggling take part.
Forecast for spring: Nasty drought worsens for much of US (AP) With nearly two-thirds of the United States abnormally dry or worse, the government’s spring forecast offers little hope for relief, especially in the West where a devastating megadrought has taken root and worsened. Weather service and agriculture officials warned of possible water use cutbacks in California and the Southwest, increased wildfires, low levels in key reservoirs such as Lake Mead and Lake Powell and damage to wheat crops. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s official spring outlook Thursday sees an expanding drought with a drier than normal April, May and June for a large swath of the country from Louisiana to Oregon. including some areas hardest hit by the most severe drought. And nearly all of the continental United States is looking at warmer than normal spring, except for tiny parts of the Pacific Northwest and southeast Alaska, which makes drought worse.
‘Tough’ U.S.-China talks signal rocky start to relations under Biden (Reuters) U.S. and Chinese officials concluded on Friday what Washington called “tough and direct” talks in Alaska, which laid bare the depth of tensions between the world’s two largest economies at the outset of the Biden administration. The two days of meetings, the first high-level in-person talks since President Joe Biden took office, wrapped up after a rare and fiery kickoff on Thursday when the two sides publicly skewered each others’ policies in front of TV cameras. The talks appeared to yield no diplomatic breakthroughs—as expected—but the bitter rivalry on display suggested the two countries had little common ground to reset relations that have sunk to the lowest level in decades. The run-up to the discussions in Anchorage, which followed visits by U.S. officials to allies Japan and South Korea, was marked by a flurry of moves by Washington that showed it was taking a firm stance, as well as by blunt talk from Beijing warning the United States to discard illusions that it would compromise.
Volcano Erupts In Southwestern Iceland After Thousands Of Earthquakes (NPR) A volcano on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland erupted Friday evening, producing a river of lava that could be seen from the capital, Reykjavik, 20 miles away. The eruption took place about three miles inland from the coast and poses little threat to residents. They were advised to stay indoors with windows closed against any gases that are released. This is the first eruption in the Reykjanes Peninsula in nearly 800 years, the Associated Press reported. Thousands of earthquakes took place in the weeks leading up to the eruption, the meteorological office reported. Earlier this week, swarms of earthquakes rattled the peninsula, with over 3,000 quakes on Sunday alone. Scientists attributed the earthquakes to magma intrusions, molten rock movement about a kilometer below the earth’s crust.
A New Year in Iran, but the country’s crises remain the same (AP) The Persian New Year, Nowruz, begins on the first day of spring and celebrates all things new. But as families across Iran hurried to greet the fresh start—eating copious crisp herbs, scrubbing their homes and buying new clothes—it was clear just how little the country had changed. A year into the coronavirus pandemic that has devastated Iran, killing over 61,500 people—the highest death toll in the Middle East—the nation is far from out of the woods. And although Iranians had welcomed the election of President Joe Biden with a profound sigh of relief after the Trump administration’s economic pressure campaign, the sanctions that have throttled the country for three years remain in place. “I was counting down the seconds to see the end of this year,” said Hashem Sanjar, a 33-year-old food delivery worker with a bachelor’s degree in accounting. “But I worry about next year.”
2 journalists detained as Myanmar junta clamps down on press (AP) Two more journalists were detained in Myanmar on Friday, part of the junta’s intensifying efforts to choke off information about resistance to last month’s coup. Mizzima News reported that one of its former reporters, Than Htike Aung, and Aung Thura, a journalist from the BBC’s Burmese-language service, were detained by men who appeared to be plainclothes security agents outside a court in the capital of Naypyitaw. The journalists were covering legal proceedings against Win Htein, a detained senior official from the National League for Democracy, the party that ran the country before the takeover. The coup reversed years of slow progress toward democracy after five decades of military rule. In the face of persistent strikes and protests against the takeover, the junta has responded with an increasingly violent crackdown and efforts to severely limit the information reaching the outside world. Security forces have fired on crowds, killing hundreds, internet access has been severely restricted, private newspapers have been barred from publishing, and protesters, journalists and politicians have been arrested in large numbers.
Spectators from abroad to be barred from Tokyo Olympics (AP) At last it’s official after countless unsourced news reports and rumors: spectators from abroad will be barred from the postponed Tokyo Olympics when they open in four months. Officials said the risk was too great to admit ticket holders from overseas during a pandemic. The Japanese public has also opposed fans from abroad. Several surveys have shown that up to 80% oppose holding the Olympics, and a similar percentage opposed fans from overseas attending.
‘You can’t escape the smell’: mouse plague grows to biblical proportions across eastern Australia (The Guardian) Drought, fire, the Covid-19 pestilence and an all-consuming plague of mice. Rural New South Wales has faced just about every biblical challenge nature has to offer in the last few years, but now it is praying for another—an almighty flood to drown the mice in their burrows and cleanse the blighted land of the rodents. Or some very heavy rain, at least. It seems everyone in the rural towns of north-west NSW and southern Queensland has their own mouse war story. In posts online, they detail waking up to mouse droppings on their pillows or watching the ground move at night as hundreds of thousands of rodents flee from torchlight beams. After years of drought, rural NSW and parts of Queensland enjoyed a bumper crop due to the recent wet season. But this influx of new produce and grains has led to an explosion in the mouse population. Locals say they started noticing the swarms up north in October and the wave of rodents has been spreading south ever since, growing to biblical proportions.

baphometmachine replied to your post: turnabout-aria replied to your post: ...
They all seem to bundle themselves in with japanese women reclaiming the term and use that logic to claim hating the western definition of fujos = hating…japanese woman who don’t want men harassing them. Its spaghetti logic.
I’ve seen them claim on multiple occasions that it was TERFs, or anti-shippers, or some other group who “stole” the word fujoshi and made it sour--but the word fujoshi in the west started with the same group it started with in Japan, straight women.
Fujoshi “culture” in Japan and fujoshi “culture” in America are entirely different beasts, and, honestly, I don’t have any problem with Japanese fujoshi because of this. It’s western women who tainted my perception of the word and community, not Japanese women, and they’re the ones who stole the word in the first place. The rest of us are just reacting to how they behave while using it.
I was talking earlier to some friends about western fujoshi, and how I think they’ve, by and large, improved regarding sensitivity from my days in the community. I don’t see them calling gay characters sinful nearly as much anymore, and a lot of them at least seem to be aware of gay men as more than a fantasy.
When I was growing up, though, I frequented a lot of fujo-heavy spaces, like popular RP forums and such, and those spaces were rife with fetishization and, worst of all, adult women RPing hardcore gay sex with minors. Spoilers: I was one such minor.
When it came to age-restricted forums, which I began using when I was old enough, it wasn’t such an issue; the assumption was that we were all eighteen or older, because the rules said we had to be, and I met some legitimately cool, respectful people on those boards.
On forums without age restrictions, though, it was a free-for-all, and way too many grown women were way too comfortable with exposing me to inappropriate and even genuinely traumatizing material, fully aware that I was, like, fifteen.
Of course, at the time, I saw nothing wrong with it, because I thought I was So Mature, but looking back on it, it wasn’t a great environment to spend my teenaged years in. Being around fujoshi, and considering myself one of them, did absolutely nothing good for me; if anything, it damaged my social skills and stopped me being able to come to terms with my gender/sexuality sooner.
ANYWAY, that’s my experience specifically with western (mostly white) fujoshi, and it’s why I’m wary of the community to this day. I’ll give credit where credit is due for progress made, and I hope that fujoshi can continue to improve as a community. Women absolutely need spaces to express themselves, but that shouldn’t come at the expense of an oppressed minority, so any improvements to the fujoshi community are welcome.

Shu Takumi interview
Several years ago, Official Nintendo Magazine UK (now no longer existent) had an interview with Shu Takumi and it was even on their website. Now their website is no longer around, but I did manage to find the interview on the Wayback Machine and I figured I’d repost it to make it easier to find, as well as give people who haven’t seen it yet the opportunity to do so.
On the day that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies is released, Takumi talks to us about his best-loved series
Shu Takumi's most famous creation, Phoenix Wright, is famed for his 'turnabouts'. These whiplash-inducing twists of logic see him step into the unknown in order to seek his client's innocence; he's essentially a chancer, blagging his way to victory. Talk to Takumi, however, and you sense that he leaves nothing to fate. His stories are intricately plotted, his jokes laser-targeted and his heroes full-bodied personalities.
In a medium in which storytelling starts and ends with 'man hates thing, man shoots thing', Takumi is a rare exception to the rule. With his latest yarn, Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney, on the horizon, Associate Editor Matthew Castle was lucky enough to cross-examine one of gaming's definitive voices.
Matthew Castle: Before we start, just for any readers who might not know who you are, could you tell us about your role at Capcom?
Shu Takumi: I'm a director, which means that I propose ideas for new titles, design the games, write the scenarios and direct the projects. In addition, I mutter complaints and, when the intense pressure of an impossible schedule finally gets to me, escape into a fantasy world of my own creation [laughs].
MC: Before developing Ace Attorney you worked on Dino Crisis. How does one go from dinosaur survival horror to virtual courtrooms?
ST: Dino Crisis was the brainchild of my then boss, Resident Evil creator, Shinji Mikami. Working on his projects taught me not only how to make games, but also how to think about them. After Dino Crisis 2 wrapped, Mr Mikami gave me six months in which to create any kind of game I wanted.
I was still pretty wet behind the ears, but as I'd originally joined Capcom with a desire to create mystery and adventure games, this was a huge chance for me to make my mark as a creator. In the end it took a team of seven 10 months to produce the first GBA Ace Attorney title. Having the freedom to create exactly the kind of game I wanted was amazing and it was a real pleasure to work on that project.
MC: Can you remember when the idea of Ace Attorney first came to you? How did your bosses respond to the idea of a lawyer-based adventure game when you first described it to them?
ST: It was in 2000 when Mr Mikami said I could make my own game and my original idea was a fairly typical adventure with a detective as the main character. Most mystery adventures have the player choose from a number of different dialogue options for their character in order to progress the story, but I wanted a new gameplay style that enabled players to deduce for themselves what was happening, rather than just selecting canned responses. I developed this into the concept of facing off against the suspect in a crime and exposing the contradictions in their statements.
I was sure my new idea would be a fun and original take on the genre, so I started to revise the main character, since a detective would be too traditional for such an original concept. I asked myself, "What kind of professional would face off against a suspect and expose their contradictory statements?" The answer, of course, was a lawyer and so the Ace Attorney concept was born.
Incidentally, I wrote the game design document at home during my summer holiday straight after Dino Crisis 2 finished. One day, I got a call from Mr Mikami. Despite having supposedly given me free rein to design whatever I wanted, he warned me off doing a game about courtroom trials!
MC: Ace Attorney paints the police and legal profession in a silly light. Have you ever had feedback from lawyers or policemen about your portrayal of them?
ST: A few years ago I had the opportunity to speak with some police detectives and they told me that their real-life investigations are nowhere near as absurd as those that were depicted in Ace Attorney. I thought to myself, "Well, I had sort-of guessed that already..."
I've never had feedback from any lawyers, but I imagine it would be the same. They'd tell me they don't scream out "Objection!" as vigorously as our characters and I'd think to myself, "Well, I had sort-of guessed that already..."
MC: Every Ace Attorney game is full of great characters, so when you wrote each sequel how did you decide which people to bring back?
ST: The first time a previously featured character returned in a later case was Larry Butz. Phoenix defended him on a murder charge in the very first case of the first game and he showed up later in the same game as a supporting character in the fourth case.
He wasn't originally planned to be a recurring character, however. The schedule for designing and drawing a new character for that case was so tight that there was a serious risk we wouldn't make it in time, so we decided to reuse an existing character simply to save time on asset creation. Thus, Larry made his encore appearance, which ended up being a well-received element of the first game's storyline, so from the second game onwards, we started bringing old characters back intentionally.
How we choose who to bring back is simple: it's usually either characters who are popular with fans, or those I am fond of [laughs].
MC: For all the madness, there's something traditional about the mysteries at the heart of Ace Attorney. Did you draw on any classic crime writers for inspiration?
ST: You could say that there is a mixture of the spilled blood of victims, the guilty tears of killers and the sweat of hard-working detectives flowing through my veins... To put it less graphically, from the time I came across the Sherlock Holmes series as a child, all the way through to my university days, I've been obsessed with reading classic murder mysteries. It's safe to say that Ace Attorney would not exist were it not for Perry Mason.
When writing the cases for the games I've found inspiration in the works of GK Chesterton, Ellery Queen and Anthony Berkeley, to name but a few. And I can't leave out that modern classic of the genre, Columbo.
MC: How hard is it to devise a juicy twist and to hide it from view? In storytelling you often want to obscure the details, but videogame design often requires clarity. Did you find it hard to rectify those two things?
ST: They say that it's harder to create a puzzle than to solve one and that's certainly proved to be the case in my experience. For the first game, with my lack of experience I found it less like a challenging task than a hobby with which I became obsessed.
You need to control the information presented in the game so that there is a single right answer for the player to deduce, but also weave in plenty of initial inconsistencies for them to uncover and our trademark 'turnabout' twists to confound their expectations. This is where reading all those mystery novels in my youth has really paid off.
MC: Having worked on four Ace Attorney games, how did it feel to step away and work on Ghost Trick? Were you nervous to leave that safety bubble?
ST: I first started working on the Ghost Trick concept in 2004, after the completion of the original GBA version of Ace Attorney 3. The third game was supposed to be the last one, but plans changed and I ended up working on the first DS Ace Attorney, which, as you know, was the first Ace Attorney title to be localised and released in the west. My next project after that was Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney, so by the time I got around to finishing Ghost Trick it was 2010, six years after I first thought up the concept.
I certainly felt a lot of pressure when making Ghost Trick, as it was a brand new IP and I had just left the Ace Attorney series, but I was grateful for the chance to take on a new challenge.
MC: Ghost Trick featured some incredibly gruesome murder concepts - death by giant roast chicken is my favourite. From where did you draw inspiration for such a huge variety of deaths? Did any not make the cut?
ST: I feel that the most violent way of murdering someone is by directly shooting, stabbing or strangling them, so for Ghost Trick I wanted to have more indirect ways of killing someone, with a darkly comical, more symbolic feeling to them.
Combining this approach with the fact that the Nintendo DS screens are not the largest, or most high-resolution displays out there, it became important to make sure that whatever death we were presenting to the player was visually easy to comprehend. So being crushed to death by some giant object was a perfect fit for our requirements, whether it was under a big rock or a huge roast chicken.
As far as cut ideas, there was going to be a stage where the victim had been crushed by a huge safe that fell from the ceiling, but time restrictions meant the whole stage was cut. I do love having giant objects fall on people, don't I? That's probably the influence of Tom and Jerry on the young Shu Takumi showing through.
MC: More importantly, how did your team react as you presented these death ideas to them. Was anyone worried for your sanity?
ST: Yes, and not only that, but I also made it my goal to cause the team to worry for my sanity whenever I presented an idea, because if they were, it meant it was a good one. I would hear a little voice in my head saying, "You win!" at times like that. The more "You win!" moments one can have in life, the better.
MC: There were nods in Ghost Trick to Ace Attorney - Missile the dog, for example; a character who looked like Wright - do you see the two games as existing in the same universe?
ST: Those are really just coincidences: the guy who looks like Phoenix actually only has the same colour suit on and the dog is not the same breed as Missile, which, coincidentally, is the name of my pet Pomeranian.
Ghost Trick takes place in what is obviously a much more fantastical world than Ace Attorney. You may have noticed that the level backgrounds in Ghost Trick never have any kind of writing in them. This was an intentional design choice to prevent the game's setting from being identifiable as taking place in any particular country or era from the real world.
MC: Could you imagine an Ace Attorney/Ghost Trick crossover? Any deaths that we couldn't prevent by way of possession could then go to trial in a courtroom...
ST: ...or Phoenix Wright could be killed and Sissel could prosecute his killer in court! Whatever form it might take, a crossover between these games is something I would love to see happen.
MC: When you return to Ace Attorney after a period of absence - whether it was to write Apollo Justice or Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney - how easy do you find it to slip back into that world and that writing voice?
ST: Writing for Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney was the first time in several years that I wrote in the voice of Phoenix and Maya, but those characters are so dear to me that I carry them around everywhere in my heart, so it was very easy to pick it up again. It was like a reunion with old friends and was a very pleasurable and nostalgic experience for me.
MC: When you came to write the scenario for Professor Layton Vs. Ace Attorney, how hard was it to make those two universes gel? Layton's world traditionally dispels the paranormal, while Wright tends to embrace it.
ST: I worked together with Level 5 to develop the world in which the crossover takes place. It took quite a lot of time for both sides to find a setting into which we were happy to place our biggest characters. The starting point for me was when I wondered to myself if one could still use logic to solve a case in a world in which crimes could be committed using magic. I really liked this idea, so it was hard, but fun, work to design the court sections of the game around it.
MC: Putting all diplomacy aside, who would win in a battle of the wits between Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright?
ST: If you ask me, I don't think Phoenix would be able to hold a candle to Layton in a real battle of wits. However, we all know that the hand of fate somehow always manages to bring a 'turnabout' in Nick's fortunes, no matter how sticky the situation, which means, well, sorry, Professor, but you're out of luck!
MC: With Ace Attorney 5 and Ace Attorney Investigations how does it feel to see your characters in the hands of other Capcom employees? We imagine it must be like a parent sending their child to school for the first day.
ST:
That's an apt comparison. I do have mixed feelings about it sometimes. For instance, I was really surprised to see that after we focused on the new character of Apollo in the fourth game, the Dual Destinies team decided to bring Phoenix back. Ultimately, though, having creators other than myself take the helm of the series is a valid choice, as it brings new directions and new story possibilities.
The team on the new game have looked at what the essence of Ace Attorney is, and as long as they can give the fans another great game to enjoy, I'll be happy. After all, the fact that the series is still going over a decade after I made the first game is something I couldn't possibly have imagined in the first place.
MC: Have you seen the Ace Attorney film? If so, what did you think of it? Was it funny to see characters you sketched out all those years ago in the flesh?
ST: I saw it, and I even got to make a little cameo when the film company invited some Capcom staff to visit the set. You can see me briefly in the spectators' gallery in the final court scene.
It was really something to see the story I wrote for the first game brought to life on the big screen by real-life actors.
And those costumes! They were such perfect recreations. The director, Takashi Miike, is an expert at making existing works from other media into entertaining live action films and he did a great job with Ace Attorney. I highly recommend that everyone reading this check it out, if they can.
MC: This interview is part of our 100th edition and we're looking back over some of our magazine highlights. Looking back over your own career, what is your personal highlight to date?
ST: As a creator, the greatest compliment to me is when someone tells me that they played one of my games and enjoyed it. In the course of the press tour for Ghost Trick in 2010, many players from around the world expressed their love of Ace Attorney to me and it's moments like those that make me glad I became a game creator. Also, I'm deeply honoured to have been asked to take part in this special issue and having myself, my team and our work considered a highlight of your magazine's history. I'd like to thank you on behalf of everyone at Capcom. This opportunity is in itself a highlight for us.
MC: Many of our readers are keen to know, what's next for Shu Takumi?
ST: Game projects are a complex balance of so many factors: what I want to make, what players might make of my concept, what Capcom as a company wants from the game, and also broader trends in the gaming industry. My next project is in the preparation stages and I still don't know myself what form it might take by the time it's finished.
Whatever happens, though, I'll be pouring my heart and soul into it and working towards that eternal goal of hearing positive reactions from the players at the end of all the hard work.

5.0 Spoilers
I’m still working on/thinking up 75, 77, and 79/80 parts for tomorrow and tomorrow, but here’s a coda
He hears the portal ripple to life a few weeks later.
Lin comes through in the outfit he gave her when she first arrived. The golden brass just makes the warm tones of her skin stand out like a beautiful sunset.
“G’raha! Have you any need for me?”
He shakes his head. “For now, the peace has no need for the Warrior of Darkness. Though time has slowed down a bit compared to your world. I feel that you can spend three days here and have only two and a half pass by back on the source.”
She smiles. “Perfect. Every extra hour I can spend here with you is one well-spent. I got you something back home.” She holds out a parcel.
“A gift?” he asks. He’s used to gifts. The people of the Crystarium had relied on him for a century now, and sometimes thankful bordered on worship. “You needn’t get anything for me.”
She pushes it towards him. “Please, it’s my choice to spoil you if I want to. I just hope it fits.”
He takes the package and starts to open it. “Fits? Hm, I did not expect you to get me clothes. I don’t think I need any.”
“You’re about the same size as Raks if I remember correctly. You remember him, right? My friend?”
He does. Another young miqo’te who was practically her brother in some respects. Lin may have been blind to his affections back then, but the one who told him she was spoken for was Rakka. More friendly and clueless, not understanding love can be unrequited.
G’raha nods his head. Inside is a set of clothes, something different from his robes. A pair of simple trousers, and a combination of a shirt and waistcoat. The latter could be worn alone, but the shirt it comes with is high-necked and long-sleeved. “I assume this is...”
“You wished you could travel Norvrandt with me, love. If you don’t wish to draw attention to yourself, you can wear the shirt. I know I can’t cover everything, but it would be enough to discourage second glances. I wanted to get gloves and boots, but those are something that need better fitting.”
She looks at him. “You don’t like it? I’m sorry, I just--”
He shakes his head. “No, no, I love it. It has been far too long since I’ve seen anywhere I haven’t had need to be. You just know that I can’t be far from the tower for too long. So a full adventure will never be on the table.”
“Then just spending a day somewhere else,” she says. “If everything is peaceful, you won’t need your powers, and I can fly you wherever you need. Do you know where everyone is?”
Adventures for a day. He likes that. Even if it wouldn’t be one grand tour, a day would be plenty to be a sightseer.
“Each of our friends have returned to where they were before. Though Alphinaud has been spending time specifically in Eulmore--”
“Perfect!” she says. “I wanted to see how Eulmore and Kholusia fare first. They were the last to get night, after all.”
The original plan had been to call everyone and have them come to the Crystarium, but clearly that was not a plan Lin would agree to.
She claps her hands together. “It’s decided then. Decide whether you want to be the Exarch or G’raha, and I’ll meet you at the Amauro Launch either way.”
She kisses his cheek as she leaves the Occular.
It takes a few minutes to decide, but he chooses to put on the outfit. It almost feels odd to wear something different, but she has an eye for detail. Hints and pieces are like what he wore on his expedition, but she chose softer fabrics than he wore before. His trip to where she’ll meet him turns a few heads. It has been so long since he’s presented as himself. There was an open secret of his race once people had been in the Crystarium long enough, there was no proof, but there was a stunning amount of proof he was no Hume, Galdjent, Dragn, Ronso, Elf, or Dwarf (And almost certainly not a Viis). So the fact that no one could prove he had the ears and tail of a cat was moot.
Still, without him in his robes, it made it clear to all that whatever he planned to do, planned to go to, he was not doing it for the sake of politics or stability. He was doing it for himself.
When he meets with Lin again, she looks him over. “Hm, Raks has wider shoulders than you. But next time, we can ask for help in the Mean. Still, I think the colors are right for you.”
He helps her get on the amaro and guides them across the Tempest. Lin loves looking along the coast, pointing out areas that haven’t changed since the sundering. First the west coast of the main continent as it disappears, then Kholusia as it grows in their view.
As they draw in to Eulmore, he sees a perfect place to land. Then there’s the people there. All of them focused on the amaro only now slowing down.
Space is made in the end, and they land perfectly.
Fewer people notice his crystal hand and cheek here, with more eyes focused on Lin.
“The Warrior of Darkness has come,” someone says, and suddenly, they’re surrounded. So many words of thanks. Others talking about the steps they’ve made.
Lin smiles and listens to them, lets them take her hands.
“I thought you didn’t wish to be seen as their savior,” he says.”Especially given how you’ve reacted to other titles you’ve earned.”
Lin laughs. “I did, and it’s true. But in my defense, we did draw quite the attention, landing on a balcony not meant to be landed on, Exarch.”
Her use of his title, his name, is quite pointed, though few still give him more than a few glances.
“Alright everyone,” a familiar voice says. “You’re coddling the poor girl. Let her breathe now.”
“Dulia!” Lin says. She cuts through the crowd. “It’s great to see you! I heard that Alphinaud has been spending time here. Do you know if he’s in?”
“Of course he is, dear,” the voice returns. The woman he remembers from the assault breaks the crowd. He remembers just how positive she had been. How encouraging. She looks over to him. “And you’ve brought a friend as well. We’ll have to get more tea and sweets for you, then. Apparently the trade between Eulmore and the Crystarium has brought so much new diversity to my palette.”
He looks over to Lin, whose eyes sparkle at the suggestion. “I’d love to catch up with you and Alphinaud, then.” One of her hands takes his, laces her fingers between his as she leads the way.
He follows her to a table by the aetheryte, and watches as Lin talks animatedly with the woman.
“You’ve been quiet,” she finally says, looking at him. “Tell me about yourself. You’re that nice boy in the robes A’lin kissed on the beach, aren’t you?”
How long it has been since someone called him a boy? It was a surprise, but just like Lin’s use of his name, it makes him feel young in the best ways.
“Ah, that was a bit spontaneous on our parts. Lin always has a flair for the dramatic. She’s quite prone to sitting on tall archways when she plays music back in the Crystarium.”
She laughs and pushes him, however the woman’s eyes open. “Oh, you are a musician as well? You never told me that.”
He’d never seen Lin’s skin darken so much. “Raha...”
Turnabout is quite fair play. It’s one thing for her to request the intimacy of dropping her own clan, but dropping his, in public? He’d never asked, but she knew she had the right. It still was a shock.
“So that is your name,” Dulia says. “What a lovely one you have Raha.”
He shakes his head. “I-- It’s G’raha. The way my name and A’lin’s work, removing the first sound is a sign of family. Or romantic affection, as is the case with us.”
“Still, play us a song,” Dulia-Chai says. She claps her hands together. “In hindsight, your voice is perfect for singing. Well, if you don’t mind performing publicly.”
Lin nods her head. “There’s a piece I put the finishing touches on a while ago. I kind of meant it to be personal, but if you don’t mind?’
“If it is the song you picked at since you’ve come, please.” He moves his hand. “If you are nervous, pretend we are alone in my chambers.” Wait, there were implications of that. “I mean the Ocular.” His own cheeks heat up.
She quickly presses her lips against his cheek. “I know full well what you meant, and it is not fear. I just like to let a friend or lover be the first to hear a song, much like you always shared your Talos with your wife, Master Chai.”
Chai-Nuzz looks at her for a moment, but nods. “Should you need an instrument, I am sure we can find one for you.”
She pulls out her lyre and strums it a few times, tuning a few strings. “No need. I bring it everywhere.”
A few more odd plucks of some strings, and she starts. A haunting wail. Regret and the past, but it turns to the same lyrics he saw her picking at on the arch back then.
A new addition surprised him. She adds his words in a line she couldn’t get right before. No wonder she wanted to give the song to him first. It was for him. About him.
Tears well up as he listens.Every lyric meant for him alone. To know he has become a muse to her, let her reach some beautiful crescendos in emotion. To remember that she once said she was letting her time in the First be a place to heal from her past, only to pass on that gift to him. He’s been too old for too long.
When she sets down the harp, he realizes she had attracted a crowd again. Several others clap for her. He’d kiss her again, but he didn’t believe she would appreciate it this time.
He’ll just have to follow through later.
“I-- Thank you everyone,” she says. “I am glad the song is good. I haven’t done much composing recently, but I found inspiration some time ago.”
Lin looks at him when she says that. She may have been his inspiration since they met, but to hear those words from her mouth, that he had inspired her in the end...
His throat catches.
“It is hard to believe the Exarch is the same man he was before,” Alphinaud says. “A’lin has changed you, and I must say it is for the better. Much as she has for so many of us.”
Only one of those words reaches the other ears. “The Exarch?” someone says. “The Crystal Exarch is come?”
His ears twitch and he almost has to laugh. “Thank you, Alphinaud. A’lin and I had mostly hoped to not draw attention. While she had failed, I had succeeded in seeming little more than an errand boy. Even with my condition.”
“I knew,” Dulia-Chai says. “While I only saw you in passing as the Exarch, the mark under your eye is quite distinctive. I doubt people from the Crystarium just happen to be part crystal. I just figured that you wanted a moment free of your duties.”
“Indeed,” Chai-Nuzz says. “I must say that while some can blind themselves when people wish to hide, I can just respect the attempt. A keen eye is how I made my fortune, after all.”
“Well, I doubt we’ll be having a quiet moment alone now.” Lin stands up. “So if I could have all of your attentions, I shall share other songs I’ve written, back in my homeland.”
He can’t take his eyes off her when she does so. Most are happy, though he does hear a requiem in one such ballad. Her own version of the end of the Dragonsong War. Of the Fortemps Memoirs he had devoured time and again over the years.
He listens to every song she shares, how she commands his attention and those around her. Back on the source, people would likely call her the sun, but the murmurs in the crowd he picks up compare her voice to the gentleness of the welcome night.
It is quite apt.
Whatever plans of leaving Eulmore end up delayed, as she sings full through the afternoon, and only stops as she sees stars.
“Ah, this went on much longer than I had intended.”
“You can stay here for the night. We have plenty of room,” Dulia-Chai says.
Lin shakes her head. “I’m sorry, but G’raha needs to return to the Crystarium, and I would like to be with him tonight. Perhaps soon, though.”
Alphinaud scrunches his face. “I do suppose you’ve been anticipating time alone with the Exarch.” He shakes his head. “Sorry, G’raha. I just have known you as the Exarch my time here, and I only know parts of the story A’lin has of how she knew you in the past.”
He shrugs. “Either is fine. Whatever you feel comfortable saying. Though being the Exarch is more than just a convenient title.”
The flight home is different. It was intimate, but there was adventure promised as well. Whatever plans Lin has for now are not the same.
“I liked that song,” he says. He needs to fill the silence.
She nods her head. “I’ve never played a song first to a crowd. Alphie was the first to hear a few. Arenvald, a Scion back home, got one. Sanson and Guydelot, some friends of mine in Gridania were present for quite a few. And Rielle from Ishgard had one shared with as well. And I suppose it’s obvious who also had a few.”
Haurchefant. Both his journeys with her centuries ago and everything he had read once made the man feel larger than life, someone who left a void on Lin so deep she never recovered.
“Do you miss him?”
She wraps her arms around him tighter. “Sometimes, but it is better now than before. As I said, he wished I would heal.” She brushes her lips against his ears, purring the next words into them. “I think he knew someone who’d cherish me waited on the other end of my journey.”
Her teeth nibble a corner, making it harder to concentrate. She has had practice with that technique. Just enough pressure to stimulate the nerves and blood, but not so hard it’s painful. A purr catches in his throat and his tail starts tapping the side of the amaro with increased frequency.
“You didn’t need to return to the Crystarium with me. We could have started our journey from Eulmore.”
“Let me be more obvious then,” she says. “If you want me to speak plain, I do not intend to retire to my room tonight. That is, unless you plan to as well, Raha.”
Her hands slip lower, one almost resting on his groin. “At least, should you consent.”
Gods she makes him feel young in more ways than one. This is no exception.
“Why settle for the Pendants, when I know your curiosity well enough. Even though I lack the need, there is a bed in the Umbilicus for the rare occasions that merely joining with the Tower isn’t enough.”
Lin chuckles as her lips find his jaw for a second. “You know how to treat a lover, if that is a yes.”
“A yes to what? You have given no hint towards your plans other than you seem to want to sleep by my side.”  He grins as he speaks.
“Ah, you want to hear the exact words then, and not let my hands talk. You. Me. Nude. Kisses. Intimate.”
He pretends to think on it. “Yes.”

25. Klavier Gavin or Kristoph Gavin?Klavier all the way. Fuck glasses boy.
26. Ace Attorney or Ace Attorney Investigations?Aw man... I think non-investigations, cause Miles just made me feel stupid all the damn time.
27. Apollo’s perceive, Phoenix’s magatama or Athena’s Mood Matrix?Perceeiivveee... PERCEEIIIVVEEE.
28. Ace Attorney trilogy or Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies?Apollo Justice and Dual Destinies.
29. 3D models or sprites?I think 3D models.
30. Ema Skye as she is in Rise from the Ashes or Ema Skye as she is in Apollo Justice? Both are great, but I do miss the adorable, almost spirited child that Ema was before she cracked down on her work. Still a great gal, though!
MISCELLANEOUS
31. Did you like what they did to Phoenix in Apollo Justice?Do I like it? No. Do I understand what happened and why he is the way he turned out to be? Absolutely. Character growth, however bad it comes, is still great. He still came back up from what Kristoph did to him, and I’m proud of the man he became after.
32. Your opinion on Dai Gyakuten Saiban? When localize??
33. Do you think Dai Gyakuten Saiban and/or Miles Edgeworth Investigations 2 will get localised to the West?Mmm.. Part of me says no, but I still want to have hope.
34. Do you think Miles Edgeworth should get another Investigation-game or do you think another character deserves a spin-off?While I do want another Miles game, it would be SO cool to have a game for maybe Mia when she started out? Like joining Grossberg’s office, and Diego showing her the ropes. (And maybe so I can indulge a little in my Miego ship...)
35. Opinion on the soundtrack of the Ace Attorney-franchise?I loVE it.
36. Do you like where the franchise is heading or did you prefer the atmosphere in the original trilogy?Umm.. Little of both? I don’t want Nick to possibly be left behind. And I REALLY think Apollo should come back at some point. They did him dirty leaving him in Khura’in for an indefinite amount of time. I want him home with Nick, and Trucy, and Athena.
37. Capcom suddenly announces that Phoenix will no longer appear in the Ace Attorney franchise! Your reaction?FURIOUS.... But I’ll still play...
38. Capcom suddenly announces that the Ace Attorney franchise has ended for good! Your reaction?Massive disappointment.. upset.. I think.. Feeling like there’s no closure...?
39. Would you like there to be another Ace Attorney/Professor Layton crossover game?I have the first one, have yet to play it, but I think that would be cool! Maybe include Miles, or maybe Apollo in the second one?
40. Would you like an Ace Attorney anime?IRONICALLY, THERE IS ONE!
41. Opinion on anime cutscenes in Ace Attorney?I love it. I LOVE IT.
42. Would you want to play an Ace Attorney game where you take on the prosecutors role?If you mean not like Investigations, but like literally a mirror of the regular series, I think that would be fucking cool as shit. Instead of investigating scenes like the defense does, you, the prosecutor, interrogate the witnesses. Oooohhh....
43. Do you like having DLC in Ace Attorney-games?Mmmm... It’s nice having more stuff, but I’d rather they just spend the extra time and put it in the game rather than charge you for it later on.
44. Opinion on Lamiroir’s storyline?*fart noise* Rather not answer.
45. One thing you think the Ace Attorney games can improve on?Uuuhhh... Closure? For Apollo, I mean? I dunno, can’t really say
46. Capcom suddenly announces an Ace Attorney movie! Would you like it to be based on an already existing case or would you like an all new storyline? There already is a movie! And either would be great! It was only the first 4 cases, so maybe continuation for it? And new cases would be cool, too.
47. Capcom suddenly announces an Ace Attorney movie! Would you prefer it being live-action, 3D animated or 2D animated?Any of these are great, I have ZERO preferences.
48. If there could be an Ace Attorney crossover with whatever franchise you’d like, which one would you choose? (Does not need to be a video-game franchise)Hmm... Off the top of the my head, I think a crossover with Tiger & Bunny would be hilarious. (in a sad way, with Kotetsu needing all the aid he can get after destroying property... maybe this was a bad idea.)
49. Opinion on recurring witnesses? (Wendy Oldbag, Lotta Hart, Larry Butz, etc.)No opinion. It’s nice to seem them again.
50. Do you think Dual Destinies deserved its M-rating?Mmm... If I knew exactly what it was for, I could tell you. Maybe the blood? I’m not sure.
