After S4, Soren's character was just reduced to a doofus. There isn't any arc going on for me. He is just there. Do you think that there is an arc for him?
blog housekeeping: tags masterpost / dragons rambles / foil tags / in regards to (discussions of race / racism) / fandom history / no discourse or harassment / please don’t send me negativity about the show and/or cast and crew
Points at "character development is not the be-all end-all provided you're still getting character expansion and a better understanding of their current worldview/characterization" + bonus "seeing how arc 2 Soren is different than arc 1 Soren"
In S4 and S5 we see:
Soren being much happier and outwardly goofier now that he's not trying to get his dad's approval
Soren stepping up to be Ezran's prime defender (4x01, 4x03, 4x09, 5x01-5x04) and good friend *
* While Soren and Ezran are friends, we have every reason to believe Soren is not going to rely on Ezran for emotional support, and there's extra layers here of Soren being Ez's knight / Ez being his true king
Oh no, you mean the character who avoids thinking about how uncomfortable and stressed he really is (s1, s2, s3) is avoiding thinking about how uncomfortable and stressed he really is now that his family's back in the picture (4x07)?
Soren's season long arc of Not Knowing vs Knowing continuing into S4 and S5
Showing anger, love, despair, and resentment towards his family members ("I know you love magic, but I hope you're careful, because it can change people" / "I was worried okay! And I missed you!" / "But it's not too late to change, please, I know you can change!" / "They were a step ahead of us. They're always one step ahead")
Him and Rayla actually having a dynamic / friendship now
"Soren definitely seems like a feelings-y protect-y kind of guy." "Yeah, you're right, that's not really his style." → "I meant with Callum. Look, when you left, you hurt him bad. Real bad. He was miserable."
Him leaping into a fight to defend an innocent dragon whereas before he was decidedly the aggressor
His developing dynamic with Zubeia and taking on more of Ezran's side of things with human-dragon reconciliation
Soren reaffirming his view of his father but also how that's made Soren more knowledgable and compassionate (through Elmer)
Like Soren is coping better bc he naturally fronts with confidence (1x01, 2x02, 2x07, even some of 3x09). I even love the growth we have from "so I picked on you cause I didn't know any better" to "He's cruel, but you don't have to be". Soren has matured in his view of his own actions and of others, even if he still has some room to grow within his own very black-and-white worldview ("It feels good to be one of the good guys this time").
I could talk more about Soren and his arc within s4 and s5 in detail, but I'm not gonna cow to a rule breaking ask so... try again more nicely maybe and we'll see?

First Impressions
The best part of The Expanse being on Amazon now is that Avasarala can curse as much as she wants. Be it in speech or writing.
The best part of the episode was watching Naomi walk onto a planet surface for the first time in her life.
I’m glad we got to see all of Holden’s 8 parents. Alex friendship with Bobbie and Amos getting close to Clarissa. All the thing we need to remember for later.
I hope Bobbie gets back to action again soon but I’m afraid she is right and it will mean another war. Her family is cute though.
I like how they show Avasarala’s caution as justified but also the frustration of all those who are barred from the new planets as valid. Belter refugees. Billions of Earthers. All those for whom new planets mean better life. But the alien threat is real too even though no one knows what is it and where and when it could show up. Not even proto-Miller.
Of course, it means, for now, humans are going to fight among themselves. Even Camina and Naomi are at odds whether Belters should go back to living on planets. Although, Ganymede was basically like one (1.5x size of The Moon and bigger than Mercury) so it’s not quite as gravity independent as the asteroid dwellers. But, I suppose, this is the first time she has to confront being the old power to the new colonies culture. Just like Ashford had to confront not being revolutionary enough.
I am however already on the side of the Ilus settlers. One, really, they were first - let them name the planet. New Terra is super uninspired (what’s next New Earth). Two - it’s a planet and they only have small settlement - it’s big enough for all of you. The RCE could’ve gone to the other side of it and never intercted with the people already there. But it might be just my dislike of Murtry speaking. Even after he survived the crash and with just a few line of dialogue so far he can eat dirt. It’s funny how Burn Gorman can be so cute as Owen or Hermann but Amazon loves him so completely despicable like The Marshal.

So, a belter getting gravity drugs fo the first time and setting foot on an alien planet fo the first time in her life.
And her crew make her walk... what 10- 15 km from their landing site to the belter settlement/ UNN-MARS scientific expedition site?
We hear Alex and Amos talking about fitting out the ship on Luna, couldn’t they have thought of an ARV or whatever contraption to move around in instead of hiking everywhere?
Granted, the crew walking and the zoom out shot of the alien planet’s topography is awesome cinematography. But did even James Holden sincerely never think to bring some form of transport even if was a foldable unicycle w/sidecar? Especially, since Naomi would be forced to walk in +1G for the very first time in her life?

would you say ezran is a flat character in mystery of aaravos? meaning he has little to no development and is used to help other characters development?
Oh, not at all.
Ezran (and even Soren and Claudia's) development in Arc 2 is a lot more... slowburn shall we say? than Viren, Callum, or Rayla. While Ezran hasn't changed much compared to 4x01 to 5x09, he is continually being challenged (kinda like how 5x08 massively challenged Callum; it didn't fundamentally change Callum as a person, but it is set up for future arcs and a turning point, in ways where 4x03 is kind of Ezran's worldview wise as well) and we're seeing both the ways he's grown and the areas he still needs to.
Ezran is never going to be a character with a Big Flashy Character Arc the same way other characters have - he's far more akin to Claudia, who steadily worsens into becoming more of what she already was in 1x01, or Terry - than he is in needing big reversals or worldview shifts or perpetual identity crises. There's a difference between character development (a character changing) and character expansion (we learn about a character's thoughts and feelings in greater detail); thus far, Ezran's been mostly getting expansion. That's not worth less than character change, at least to me.
Ezran's S4-S5 arc was actually, I think, the first 'official' meta I wrote after S5, so if you're curious about more thoughts on him in Arc 2, I'd recommend these metas I wrote a lil while ago:
Crowns, Coins, Catalysts, and Callum :: An Ezran Meta
Ezran as a Paragon
Some thoughts on the Broyals + Harrow&Viren parallels
But yeah Ezran gets the Thematic Turning point of the whole show in his speech in 4x03 (which I forget if I've expanded upon that position before, so feel free to nudge), we're doing mighty fine
