Her handmaids had helped her ready herself for the ceremony. Despite the tender mother’s stomach that had afflicted her these past two moons, Dany had dined on bowls of half-clotted blood to accustom herself to the taste, and Irri made her chew strips of dried horseflesh until her jaws were aching. She had starved herself for a day and a night before the ceremony in the hopes that hunger would help her keep down the raw meat.

When a Khal passes away or dies in battle, his widowed Khaleesi(s) receives a tattoo of a horse rearing beneath a star, one only reserved for the widowed wives of a Khal, to signify their new position as part of the Dosh Khaleen. This tattoo is ideally placed on either the cheek or the forehead, or any other visible part of the body. Other Khals would be bound by honor and sacred law to escort her and protect her if they came across her on her journey to Vaes Dothrak.

ASOIAF RARE PAIR: IRRI OF THE DOTHRAKI X AEGON VI TARGARYEN

The little mare had only been a little girl when Khal Drogo killed her parents and uprooted the young princess and her sister and forced them into a life of slavery. Safety and security had only been a luxury after that, even under the protection of her khaleesi, she still felt as if a part of her still belonged to the Khal who took everything from her and made her a commodity. However, in Westeros, she catches the eye of her khaleesi’s rival for the Iron Throne: Aegon Vi Targaryen and she soon learns that he is not only a young dragon like her Khaleesi, he is not of this earth, he is the only thing that could ever bring more heat than dragon fire, he is the sun. He warms her and brings joy back into her life and she finally feels her long almost forgotten freedom when she runs, skips, and jumps under him. The girl goes from a Dothraki princess to a slave to a handmaiden to a rebel to Queen of Westeros, a land that had once looked down upon her “savage” people. As for the boy king, he finds he much rather enjoys the feeling of riding a stallion by his queen’s side than he ever could’ve imagined riding a dragon.

Dothraki clothing ideas or as I like to call it trying to fix George’s mistakes

The Dothraki sea is gigantic I don’t understand why they’re all wearing the same thing. Weather affects what you wear!! There should be heavy furs and leathers farther north and light wools near the center. And everyone should be wearing multiple layers why are the Dothraki always half naked. The sun and the wind are your worst enemy if your constantly riding, you need to cover up!! Also colors need to be a thing (yes even for the average Dothraki not just the Khals)

Again why are Khals and Khaleesis essentially wearing the same clothing as slaves and common folk. These people are said to have immense pride, so they should use their spoils from raids and pillages to decorate themselves lavishly. The daughter of a Khal should be dripped the fuck out in beads and metalwork and dyed heavy fabrics. The common members of the Khal would be the ones wearing worn leathers, so they can protected themselves while riding and herding

Hats and Headdresses oh my goddd why is every fantasy show afraid of covering their heads. Imagine how cool horsehair headpieces would look, maybe they’re significant for a bride or married woman or religious figure. And there should be everyday hats as well. There’s no shade in the Dothraki sea, so everyone should be wearing a variety of hats depending on weather and their status.

Silhouettes should have some similarities, but still differ from each other based on location. The basic look would most likely be a wrapped tunic with slits on the side to easily mount and ride horses, and a belt to hold everything together. And this should just be the basic shape, people would add their own embroidery or overcoats or detachable sleeves etc etc

Finally: Khalasars need to be DISTINCT from each other. It doesn’t make sense that every single Khalasar we see wears tan leather and horse hair and blue paint. Maybe one tribe can be recognized by the shape of their hats or the fact that they have some clothing inspired by YiTi, because they are so close. Maybe another can be recognized by their bright blue pigment they use to dye most of their garments. This is a huge culture there needs to be distinctions based on location

How the heck does Dothraki not have a word for "thank you?" Putting aside certain implications, surely all cultures and especially Dothraki who have such a clear hierarchy have words for respectful acknowledgement, right?

Wrong! In 2018, Floyd et al. came out with a paper called "Universals and social diversity in the expression of gratitude". Long story short, it's mainly a Western thing to have a word for "thank you" and use it a lot. It's hard to summarize an entire article in a single sentence, but this quote from the paper does a pretty good job:

The idea that gratitude's role in social reciprocity is tied to saying ‘thank you’ appears to be largely based not on systematic empirical observation but on attitudes about politeness in English-speaking society.

I think having a word for "thank you" and using it a lot is a modern phenomenon, and probably started from European languages and spread.

Additionally, the implication with questions like this is often that it was my decision for Dothraki to lack a word for "thank you". It wasn't. I had said that Dothraki didn't have a word for "please". From that, the writers came up with the idea of Dothraki lacking a word for "thank you". It had one, at that point, and so I got rid of it to match the show. Even so, Dothraki lacking a word for "thank you" is probably more accurate than it having one, though, since apparently having such a word is rarer than one might think.

Dothraki Hairstyles

I based the hairstyles on Mongolian and Plains Native American hairstyles, as some North African hairstyles. Their hat ornaments are made from horse bone, leather, and in the case of a very few high ranking members silver. We also know from the books that they oil their hair, this a common practice for south Asians as well as North Africans, so this means that a number of different hair textures are possible.
