Speaking as someone who is claircognizant I always loved the way Joyce described how she found out about Dawn not being her daughter.

She says it’s “knowledge that just came to her” that she “just knew”

There’s only ever one other character throughout the whole Buffyverse that explains their psychic abilities like that and that’s Cordelia. Even though Cordelia primarily gets visions, so she’s primarily clairvoyant, she can also feel what the people she’s seeing in the visions are feeling physically and emotionally too. And on top of that… she “just knows”.

It’s nice to be represented with this every now and again. Makes me feel like I’m not alone in having these experiences. Of course it’s a fictional supernatural show but every now and again, fiction does cross with real life. The Clairs (or ESP) are very much real. While everybody else is talking about magic and fantasy. Stuff you can only find in fiction, you have the characters Joyce and Cordelia explaining and dealing with the real shit.

And I don’t know. I just always loved that about Joyce in this episode.

I’ve had to come up with a new term.

I was experiencing something the other day where I was able to feel like I was touching things--mostly trees, whom I was greeting--at a distance. Like being able to feel their energy on my hands and my cheeks and feeling like I was reaching across the distance to lay a hand on them when they were really yards away from me.

I thought maybe this was one of the clairs (y’know: clairvoyance, clairaudience, etc). The problem is that there are two clairs that almost-but-not-quite fit. Clairsentience (clear feeling) is more about emotions, intuitions, and gut feelings than tangible feeling, and it turns out that clairtangence is another term for psychometry: touching objects and then being able to say something about the object’s history. Which was not at all what I was experiencing.

So I had to come up with a new term: teletangence or teletangency. It means touching at a distance (like television is seeing at a distance; and telephone is distant sound/voice; and telekinesis is moving at a distance). It could include the phenomena of:

Feeling like you’re touching something/someone that you’re not in actual contact with (reaching across the distance)

The sense of feeling like someone is beside you or in the same room with you, sensing someone’s presence when they are or are not there

The feeling of having someone touch you when there’s no one there

Being able to feel a person’s eyes on you

Feeling a person’s energy field or chakras, like they do in reiki

Feeling energy movement and force, like in tai chi

I think this is probably a pretty common phenomenon (I’ve certainly felt it many times in my life), and I’m really surprised it hasn’t gotten an agreed-upon name yet.
