Cartoon Network Friday Spotlight- “Cleaning House”
In 1937, Isadore “Friz” Freleng left Warner’s animation department to headline a series of theatrical shorts based off of The Katzenjammer Kids comic strips, now named The Captain and the Kids. He didn’t direct every short himself- a few other directors took turns, including a pre-Tom and Jerry Bill Hanna- but Freleng would direct the lion’s share of shorts for the series before MGM dropped the series and Friz returned to Warner.
Not this one, the first short, where Mama and the kids are in the process of spring cleaning. The Captain, meanwhile, is trying to sleep in and fakes an illness to take the day off. This upsets Mama, while the hellraising boys, Hans and Fritz, call the doctor to check on their papa. Hijinks ensue.
I can tell why these didn’t catch on very well. While Robert Allen is a solid director himself, the characters aren’t very special- maybe knowing how well-defined and layered the tropes of lazy patriarch, overbearing matriarch, and troublesome kids can be later in the century, like with The Simpsons, just shows the Captain and co’s limitations. Additionally, there are a couple of good chuckles, but a lot of this relies on tired slapstick that the crew, including Freleng and Hanna, would nail better later on.
And no, these shorts wouldn’t remain favorites over the years, but they did show up later on the Late Night Black and White block, as well as on future Looney Tunes home video releases as a reminder of Freleng’s lengthy career.

Look lets be honest, we all know student body president doesn’t do SHIT in high school and none of what they do affects anything for any students. With this thought in mind, would you rather vote for the preppy, annoying, “better than everyone because I believe I deserve it” girl who cheats the system you have to deal with, or the coolest girl in school who is kind to everybody and saved the world THREE TIMES because of that fucked system, and also did a sick shrimp jump at this cool party everyone was invited to without discrimination

This may be the most self awareness I've seen from Luffy in the whole series 🤣
