ok but...harringrove rugby au.

steve certainly does not play rugby. his mother would never allow it, no matter his father’s grumbled comments about do some good for that boy to learn a gentleman’s game, not that damn basketball trash. a gentleman’s game - a term harrington snr’s picked up on his many trips to england shcmoozing business partners with chilled white wine in the premium box seats above the field.

there’s a certain partner who always talks about how it’s so easy to own a club, just sit and wait for the profits to roll in, simple as anything to have it on the side while you just focus on your actual business. so harrington snr has the bright idea to buy out 50% of a relatively well performing club in sydney, australia, the same club that’s just introduced a new recruit into their lineup, a kid they’re calling billy ‘bomba’ hargrove.

it’s never a gentleman’s game if billy’s playing.

billy’s a fresh draft, firmly in centre right and uninterested in any other position. no one knows much about him, since he got brought over from america of all places only last year, didn’t go through any of the local academies, didn’t play all through juniors with the other young powerhouses, didn’t play for their national youth team - played for america’s national youth team but playing for america in an international rugby league cup doesn’t count for much over here.

it takes less than eight games in his debut season for him to start leaving an impression. scrappy. hungry. brazen. relentless. feral - that’s a favourite of the media. feral. talking about how he never throws himself into the tackles, he plants his feet and pulls the chargers up right where they stand like plucking flowers out of the ground, getting em just shy of vertical every time and absolutely crunching them in half, putting a bit more shoulder behind it than technique dictates, a positively wild grin on his face as he watches them come straight at him again and again like prey right into his snapping jaws.

he runs like an animal too, loping along just slightly behind play almost lazily keeping up formation, always got a sharp eye on the ball and his winger. when the ball makes it his way it’s always unclear if he’s about to explode, shooting past the line of defence or if he’s going to hang onto the pass, draw the line closer and closer then offload to the side as the defence bears down for the winger to snap it up and make the try. he gets a grubber in there too, sometimes, for good measure, loves gnashing his teeth into a laugh while the other team fall over themselves trynna turn their momentum around and head the ball off before it’s smashed down over the try line.

the first game steve watches live of his father’s new team is also the game of billy’s first ever try. steve’s jet lagged from the 10 hour direct flight from chicago to sydney, and he’s grumpy and confused the whole game, but even he can feel the thrumming energy of the crowd when billy first waltzes out from the interchange.

the team’s on the fourth tackle, some 40m out from the try line and down by a mere two points in the second half. the other team is known for their technique, been dubbed ‘mechanical’, ‘seamless’ - they’re practically perfect.

but billy ‘bomba’ is far from something so ordinary as perfect. his footwork is wild and aggressive, his playing style is defined by the marked lack of style, and he’s as unpredictable as he is unassuming. the other team isn’t prepared for this young curly-haired kid, fresh legs off the bench with only 15 minutes left, to come charging out like a feral dog with its tail on fire. he’s on the field for barely five minutes when the pass comes floating from deep in the centre to out near the touch line, straight towards his open arms. the crowd watches with bated breath as he snatches it right out the air and runs.

he manages to break the line of defence purely by surprise and then he’s running free, bearing down on the try line. 30m. 25m. 20m. 15m. he gets to 10m and suddenly the smashed up, scrunched up face of the opposing fullback is right on him.

steve, up in the comfort of the private member’s box in the stands, winces as he watches billy’s arm fly out, hears the open palm crunching straight into the other player’s battered face and shoving, down and away, leaving the poor guy laying flat on his back blinking up at the stadium lights as billy dances across the last couple metres and slams the ball down over the try line with a roar.

billy turns around as the stadium explodes around him, and the cameras catch him, not smiling over at his teammates hurtling down the field towards him or the fans clamouring behind him, but grinning viciously down at the player still laid out breathing shakily on the grass. that’s the shot that gets plastered over the front pages the next day proclaiming the team’s win, and that’s the shot that steve sees behind his eyes that night as he lays in his too large hotel bed trying to sleep.

he tosses and turns, throws off his blanket and then his shirt in a bid to stop the flushing heat down his skin. he tells himself there’s nothing attractive about the golden-skinned ripple of brute force, about blue-eyed animal aggression or a sneer covered in spit and sweat and blood. nothing attractive at all.

Nyx looks up. “Drawing from my memories of one particularily disastrous vacation on the Moon. Dad needed to uncover, where did the shipments of technical gold go, Ash the Earthsider was searching for a missing Diancie and got sponsored to go to the Moon and I was just with the family. Our routes got kinda intertwined on the later stages and, well… let me just say, that it was for a multitude of reasons - one of them being that gold is a great gain material for the explosion-pumped X-ray laser and one of the others being that diamonds make great reflectors for the X-ray lasers.” She chuckles sadly. “Even though I am a pretty powerful Psychic, I still have a big weakness - none of my normal defense moves cover certain parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, which are where combat lasers usually work. I have to bypass this with solid-matter barriers I form with telekinesis.” Nyx looks back at the PDA. “So, what’s happened is that in our investigation we’ve found where did both Diancie and gold go. We’ve barely survived the meeting with it. On my previous drawing is what we’ve met in our searches - a laser mech with diamond optics and explosion-pumped laser. Let me just quote one of the technical notes we’ve found back then.” She opens a text file on the PDA, which reads: “Wow. Holy smokes, peeps. I've got a thought about a mech. Gigantic mech With a laser. Humongous laser.Step-by-step: Take inertial-contained fusion drive, or mini-mag pulser, pulsed fission-fusion etc. Throw away the magnetic nozzle and most of the radiators. Ignition system (laser, particle accelerators, plasma, antimatter - whatever) is put together like a ring. For example, for the fuel pellet with 10t TNT equivalent, we're going to have ring roughly 100m in diameter (or maybe much smaller, nozzle of the mini-mag pulser’s 20m in diameter with energy yield three times greater, but we don't have to intercept energy - quite the opposite, in fact). Fuel pellet's loaded with a golden rod. Do you feel it? Right, it's a gain material for the X-ray laser, which emits the beam along the axis of the ignition ring. Without bomb-jiggle and all those misguiding factors, just like in the drugstore.Then, we place multi-layered diamond X-ray reflectors a few hundred meters apart. Now we have an X-ray laser with an actually good aperture, which's not limited by the gain material proportions. With 10m reflectors and a ton of TNT on the nanometer beam, this thing’s going to keep the power at lethal levels (around 10 kJ/cm2) on the distance up to 200 light seconds, more than a third of an AU. Holy Arceus. And the funniest thing is that mass of this thing’s going to easily fit in a few dozens of tons. Don't wanna calculate RN, but looking at the engine designs we, approximately, have: required systems of the mini-mag pulser are less than 30 tons, and we're having even smaller of a "caliber". Of course, this thing’s wonderful by itself. Or on the spaceship. Especially since it can easily be a part of an engine, it just needs a nozzle. But it's not stylish enough for us, so we're going to place it on a small celestial body without atmosphere (Moon, where we already have some assets). And put it on the legs. Since the machine's low on mass, the gravity is weak and the size is enormous, we're going to get a gigantic Surskit-alike on long, thin legs. It can easily crawl around, not being limited in remass (it always has an unlimited supply of it right beneath its legs). Considering range of those lasers, ability to constantly and chaotically move around, even in standby mode is a gigantic advantage. And just to hammer things in, we can install MHD recuperation system on the either side of ignition ring, using the energy from otherwise-wasted plasma to recharge capacitors of the ignition system. With that thing in place, our only firing rate limitation would be how how fast we can chug the pellets in place and how fast can we dissipate the heat." She selects the second note, which is much shorter and reads: “Approval for your project is given. Resources will be transferred to the Moon shortly. Begin the R&D ASAP.” Nyx closes the app, switching back to drawing, and resumes: “With that in mind, when we first met the laser mech, we, to say frankly, were at a gigantic disadvantage. Even if we ignore the mobile nuclear powerplants, converted into escort laser tanks and Psy-jammers, this thing could still depress enough to take aim at the things at the ground level. Thanks to the Psy-jammers, I couldn’t attack it directly via normal means and looking down the optics of a gigantic laser with enough power and range to be able to damage the colony without even leaving the Moon was… disturbing, to say the least. Thanks Victini dad managed to ‘procure’ an old, but still working portable tactical subkiloton nuclear launcher from the times Soris Empire was sorta-expected to attack the Von Braun city and vice versa and use it to cripple the leg of a laser mech, forcing it to fire beam to the side…” She sighs, remembering this hectic day further. “The problem was, we were still at disadvantage and the mech was still working. We’ve had to run towards the ‘Drapion’ and take off from the Moon ASAP... but, unfortunately, they’ve managed to swap out the leg and bring the mech into action again. I’ve had to lift around 20,000 tons of regolith and form it into a chaotically-swirling cloud in order to cover us against laser fire, while also helping to lift the ship faster. Here’s the still from one of the ship’s rear view cameras.” She opens a picture and shows it to Hannah:

“The cloud-like things at the sides are exhaust cones of the nuclear thermal-arcjet engines. The grey cloud in the middle is the regolith shield I’ve formed. It was taken when I was almost entirely spent, hence mech managing to nearly-penetrate the shield by firing at one point and forming a Matryoshka cavity. Thankfully, it got overheated soon and, as soon as it stopped firing, I’ve fired most of the cloud at it as a dispersed attack. It didn’t destroy it completely, but it did destroy the optics, which were the most expensive parts of the mech, and force it back into repair cave. Even so, from having to keep the cloud formed and swirling chaotically enough non-stop, then launching it… long story short, I’ve fallen into a hypoglycemic coma from using Psychic so much without taking care to keep the blood sugar at an optimal level. It wasn’t a problem, but it did bring me out of action for a shortwhile.”

one : picture a little girl with bright blue eyes, pigtails bouncing with every step she takes as a grin makes its way upon her face . she seems happy ---- and in the moment she truly is, despite the fact that the people she needs the most, her parents, are a few thousand miles away and aren’t here to see olympia say her first words or take her first step. she is too young to understand --- honestly, too young to even think about the reasons why they left her.

two : she is a little bit older now, a full-on eleven years old --- taller, thinner and, most importantly, rowdier. she has quite a few friends, although they all seem to be having picnics with their barbie dolls and sleepovers dedicated to watching princess movies whereas olympia wants to run around and jump all over the place. the girls just don’t seem to match her energy, the boys aren’t exactly welcoming towards her, having this stupid, “ew, but you’re a girl!” mindset. she just wants to find something for herself, something that will keep her interested for longer than three hours ---- that something turned out to be diving.

three : it’s a few years later, and now she’s standing at the 10m platform. it’s her last dive, and she needs to get it exactly right to win the gold medal. olympia would honestly be lying if she said her legs weren’t shaking because of how nervous she was --- but there’s a camera right in front of her face, therefore she has to keep it together. she turns around, takes one last breath, and then she’s up in the air. fifteen seconds later she’s fully submerged into water ----- and fifteen minutes later she has tears coming out of her eyes. she did it. she’s the world champion now.

four : it’s exactly a year later, and a lot has changed. olympia finds herself in the sunny city of rio de janeiro where she’s come to compete in her first olympic games --- which is exactly what she’s always been meant to do, judging by the name her parents gave her. except this time she’s nervous for an entirely different reason --- she’s now a successful athlete, this season’s leader and the one to watch out for. she’s the reigning world champion, for god’s sake, so she has to prove every single person out there she didn’t win on an accident. a lot of things seem to be going wrong; from oly flubbing her first dive to her coach coming up to her before her final one to say that her parents have showed up at the arena. eventually she finds herself in the same exact position as she did back in Russia ---- her palms are sweating, her legs are shaking, but there’s no turning back. the only way is down, so she has to dive one way or another. a jump, two somersaults, a twist ----- she’s back in the pool, and as she immediately drowns in the roar coming from the audience, tears start coming out of her eyes. she did it again. she’s lived up to her name.

five : ever since she got back home, her life has completely changed. interview after interview, a campaign after a photoshoot, an event after the other ---- all of that mixed in with her training routine has it ups and downs. her schedule keeps her busy yet there’s something missing. she’s looking everywhere in the hopes of finding that missing piece, and at some point she feels like she’s found it in the face of a stranger who ends up in her bed that night. it brings her a sense of serenity, that lasts a few weeks ---- but olympia knows it’s all too good to be true, and it’s proven to be that way as she stumbles upon a certain page on a random night. it doesn’t seem real at first, but when she spots a tattoo on the girl’s ribcage, a realization hits her ---- she’s plastered all over porn sites, and that particular video featuring her has generated a few million views in a span of two months. she doesn’t remember the night at first due to her drunken state, but she recognizes her bedroom, particularly a personalized louis vuitton gym bag sitting in the corner. details like that help her piece the night together, and from that point on there’s nothing but fear of it all coming out and ruining her career.

oly was born in chicago but grew up and spent most of her time in toronto with her grandmother, since her parents were setting up their business overseas. they were coming by to visit her maybe once or twice a year, so she isn’t as close with them.

she is a competitive diver (a quite decorated one bc .... why wouldn’t she be 🥺🥺🥺) representing canada bc of her upbringing despite the fact that she now lives in new york (she moved here in 2017, after the rio olympics)

her placements mean that she is quite creative, capricious and may appear manic sometimes --- but really she is just downright STUPID bc she is always trying to get her ass into trouble. like, you can’t even imagine how many times her coach had to drag her out of the mess she got herself into ...

𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐅𝐎𝐑𝐓 𝐂𝐑𝐎𝐖𝐃 / close friends --- everybody needs some sort of a support system in their life, and oly is no exception to this rule. she’s never really had a big family, therefore she’s always surrounded herself with people in the hopes of filling the empty space in her heart. and honestly, if it wasn’t for these people, she would’ve quit diving right after winning the olympics, moved to the suburbs of toronto and just lived a quiet life --- but the pride for her friends just gives her enough motivation to move further and become better.

𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐍𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐈𝐍 𝐂𝐑𝐈𝐌𝐄 / best friend --- we all have that someone who’s impossibly close to us; who we cannot imagine our lives without. the bond is so crucial to them both parties that it feels as if there’s never been a moment without each other. the general public and tabloids, though, feel as if there’s more going on and will not stop nagging them about the details.

Training grounds

I love durians.

I just never expect my love for the fruit would lead me to witness something so sick and bizarre that I still have trouble believing my own eyes.

That people actually do things like that to each other.

All in the name of love, or is it fun ?

Durians.

King of the fruits as they call it.

The pungent aroma is an acquired taste.

You either love it or you hate it.

There are many variety of durians and some of the best ones are the ones that are free.

Yes.

Not many people know about this but right here on this very island, there are clusters of matured durian trees.

How can such a congested city have durian trees you ask, everywhere you turn is a block of flats, or a mega shopping mall, if there really are free durians, you can be sure there will be a long queue of people camping below the tree.

Well, there isn’t because the land which the trees are sitting on, are actually military training grounds.

Trespassing is going to get you arrested, charged, or if you are unlucky, probably shot if the military is conducting a live fire exercise.

Maybe you would get rolled over by tank. I don’t know.

Anything is possible.

With prominent signs warning the public to keep out of the training grounds, the area is usually deserted.

Now, this is where I come in.

You see, I work for a department in the military that manages the contractors who prepares and clean up the training area.

I have a detailed schedule of when troops will be conducting their training.

Which meant, I know exactly when those grounds would be empty.

You can pretty much guess where I’m going with this.

Yes, I’m going to fucking load up on free durians, rambutans and wild grown bananas.

What better way to spend your weekend ?

Needless to say, I know my job would be at stake if I get caught so everything has to be hush hush.

I told no one, not even my parents.

I just took a large gunny sack and rode my scooter to the training ground.

Of course I need to avoid the main roads, there are the occasional security patrols even on weekends but I know the area near Nanyang Technological University like the back of my hand.

I went to school there.

Now I approached the area using a back road. There’s a bit of a climb through a steep slope but after that, it’s pretty much downslope in secondary jungle.

I was introduced to the place by a semi-retired warrant officer attached to my team and I’ve never stopped visiting that site since.

This is my 4th year entering the site and I did not expect any surprises.

I’m usually in and out within 3 hours with my loot.

I parked my bike by the side of the quiet road and made the rest of my way in on foot.

I was about to reach one of my favourite durian tree when I saw some commotion about 20m away at a clearing ahead.

I immediately froze and stopped moving.

Fuck, if I get caught by some ranger or security staff, I’m going to get fucked real good by my boss for trespassing on training grounds.

Then I heard the giggle.

The giggle of a girl.

Then I head the man’s voice. He was laughing.

Curiosity got the better of me and I moved closer to take a better look.

When I saw the face of a colleague of mine, Bella, I almost wanted to turn and bolt.

Bella is a manager in the finance department that I work with quite often. She’s quite stern at work and know to have that stuck up resting bitch face when she is not smiling.

If she sees me here, things won’t bolt well for me.

I heard her giggle and laugh again and I could hear the man talking once again.

She shouldn’t be here. Neither should i.

I could see durians scattered all over the floor, they’re obviously not here for the fruits, so why are they here ?

The voice of that man sounded a little familiar as well.

Their backs were facing me and I quietly found another vantage point to continue observing them.

When I saw the man, I almost wanted to scream.

That fucker is a colleague of mine. Raj.

Raj is a married man and I attended his wedding barely 6 months ago.

What the fuck is he doing here with Bella ?

I moved closer another few steps, grateful for the dull green top I was wearing.

I checked to make sure my phone is put to silent.

They should be doing that. That road leads to a training shed that the army uses pretty often.

I left my gunny sack by the durian tree and followed them.

I found a nice spot which gave me a good view of Raj and Bella at the training shed.

Ok. The moment they start kissing and touching each other, I’m going to get the camera rolling.

I was trying to stifle a giggle.

I held my phone and got ready as I observe them with a smile.

Then my smile slowly disappeared.

It gave way to a series of question marks.

5 minutes later, my jaws were slightly apart and the only thing I could say was ; “ what the fuck …”

I watched absolutely dumbfounded as Raj removed Bella’s top and shorts, leaving her in only her bra and her panty.

Then he made her bend over a long wooden bench before tying her wrist to the base of the bench support.

She’s going to get fucked bad by the mosquitoes man. Perhaps more so than she is going to get doggied by Raj.

Raj tied each of her ankles to the stump of the support of the bench on the next row, effectively spreading her open for his entry from the rear.

Well, everyone has their kinks.

Target, Olympic gold: World No. 1 shooter takes aim at the closet - other sports

He’s the world’s No. 1 10m air rifle shooter. He is all of 17. Before the pandemic hit, his days were measured counting down towards the Tokyo Olympics, and the hours passed like minutes as he trained obsessively. Then the lockdown hit and everything came to a grinding halt for Divyansh Panwar. Shut in his apartment and without access to a range, Panwar spent more than fourteen days desperately itching to get his fingers on a trigger.

Then his personal coach and neighbour, Deepak Dubey, came up with a plan—they were going to recreate a 10m range at home, an apartment in Faridabad.

“Divyansh was at the lowest ebb in his competitive career and I had to do something to get him back to full training,” Dubey, 43, said.

Initially the plan was to make a firing point at Panwar’s flat—the shooter and his coach own near-identical apartments in the same complex—“but the configuration of the rooms didn’t allow a clear look at the target 10m away,” Panwar said. “So that was ruled out. Then my coach volunteered to construct the range at his place. Luckily, the room configuration in his 3 BHK home was perfect.

“We measured the distance from one end of the bedroom, right through the lobby and into the other end of the (second) bedroom. While it was a clear 10 meters, it left no space for me to stand and take aim,” Panwar added.

Space is not your friend if you are into DIY shooting ranges, especially in city apartments. 10 metres is around 33 feet, half the size of a cricket pitch from one bowling crease to another.

“So, the coach emptied his wardrobe, went on his bike to a friend’s place and brought an EST (Electronic Scoring Target) machine,” Panwar said. “He installed it inside the closet. Finally, I got the 10m space required and also enough space to stand and shoot.”

Now they had a firing lane. The next problem was lighting. A modern shooter’s training is based around two vital devices—the EST, and a highly sophisticated optical sensor attached to the barrel of the gun called a SCATT system, which tracks every aspect of a shooter’s motion, right from the minutest movements of the barrel to the pull of the trigger. Both systems need a certain amount of light to even get activated, and Dubey’s house was simply not bright enough.

“I had to move several tube lights in the house to one room,” Dubey said. “It was very tough getting the electrical fittings.”

Without access to an electrician or even a drill machine, Dubey and Panwar spent two days just making holes in the walls for the wiring, and to install plugs and sockets.

“For two days, with a hammer in hand, we kept chipping at the walls and the wardrobe to fix the lights,” said Dubey, who is associated with the junior national rifle squad and is also a coach with Khelo India.

Things fell in place hours before Panwar was to take part in an online competition where 50 top shooters from around the world competed on April 15.

Panwar logged in to the video conferencing platform called zoom, and placed his phone in such a way that the camera captured him, as well as the screen which displayed the score from the EST.

He finished fourth in what was a first-of-its kind championship.

“When the lockdown was enforced, we were completely clueless about how to pursue Divyansh’s training,” Dubey said. “Initially, I put a paper target on a wall in my house. But that’s a very, very primitive way of doing things. Then, we started playing badminton in the parking area of the compound but soon people started objecting, asking us to take the lockdown seriously. Since I stay on the sixth floor, I’ve now enforced a rule that Divyansh will only take the stairs to my house. At least that will give him some exercise.”

Now Panwar is back to training every day, shooting competitive scores on a regular basis.

Thankfully, the supply of lead pellets, which are imported from Italy and Germany, is not a problem. “We had a few tins which we were using judiciously,” Panwar said. “Then we got a call from a TOPS (Target Olympics Podium Scheme) official a couple of days back and coach sir went to the Karni Singh Shooting Ranges (in Tughlakabad) to collect the fresh stocks.”

So @94mercy made this post that headcanoned that Yuri gets drunk one night and talks about the size of Otabek’s dick on social media, and I immediately knew I had to write it. Otherwise known as me just wanting to join in with all the hung!Otabek content that’s been coming out of this fandom in recent weeks.

They’ve been dating for a few months when it happens.

Yuri goes round to Mila’s for a few drinks after practice one day, and they steadily make their way through a bottle of vodka, laughing and talking about their respective partners. The music is loud and Yuri feels all loose and giggly as he reaches for his phone, taking selfies and documenting their escapades on Snapchat. He’s never been this drunk before, so drunk he’s not even sure what order his memories from the last few hours go in, so drunk that he can barely stand, so drunk that the room is spinning.

He sits down and opens Twitter, starting to type. He doesn’t even think about what he’s Tweeting, just starts a thread and keeps on going until he gets it all off his chest. Mila is grabbing at his hands and pulling him up so they can dance together again, and Yuri’s phone lies on the couch, forgotten.

So he doesn’t see what he’s done until morning.

It’s the sound of his phone vibrating loudly on the bedside table that wakes him up. He’s in Mila’s spare bedroom, a small sized room with what feels like the most uncomfortable bed he’s ever slept on, but it evidently didn’t bother him at whatever time he collapsed onto last night. At least he made it into bed, he supposes. That’s an achievement, even if he’s still wearing yesterday’s clothes.

He grabs at his phone, squinting at the screen. It reads 6 AM, and is somehow fully charged, even though he has doesn’t remember plugging it in last night. It’s far too early. Yuri wants nothing more at this particular moment in time than to roll over and go back to sleep to avoid dealing with this hangover from hell, but it’s Otabek that’s calling him, so he supposes that he’d better answer.

“Hello?” he says, his voice sounding all croaky as he unplugs his phone and rolls back onto his back. There’s light streaming in through a gap in the curtains, and Yuri would get up and close them properly, but they’re too far away to deal with right now. Instead, he opts for the easier option: pulling his blankets over his head.

“Yuri, what the fuck?” Otabek asks on the other end of the line. Even in this still half drunk, hungover state, Yuri can tell that this is Not Good. “What were you thinking?”

“What are you talking about?” Yuri replies. He wonders if it’s about his and Mila’s Snapchat stories, but from what he can remember there’s nothing too outrageous on them, just some really bad singing in questionable English to pop songs neither of them like.

Yuri fumbles with his phone, opening Twitter with his phone call with Otabek still active in the background. He doesn’t even need to go onto his profile to see it, it’s all over his timeline. “Oh, shit,” he swears as he scrolls through the Tweets. “I don’t even remember posting any of this. I was so drunk, Beka. So drunk. I’m sorry.”
