Willow and Hunter had matching Flapjack tattoos ;]

Also I love that Darius most definitely sees Hunter as his son.

And how Hunter became a palisman carver with the other Clawthorns is perfect.

The Bat Queen finally can be free with all the other palisman now that their threat is gone for good now.

And Flap’s grave made me cry even harder omg.

Also the backgrounds for this episode were so beautiful.

The contrast is so poignant when it comes to Belos isolating Hunter for years and instilling the fear of wild magic, versus Hunter's future in carving palismen to connect with nature and with others.

We have his signature gloves as part of all his outfits before he went to the human realm, representative of that isolation and fear: Belos wanting to keep 'Caleb' to himself, wanting to prevent Hunter from forging connections and thus finding freedom. The gloves come off once Hunter has room to create and experiment and explore.

During the many many months in between him beginning to learn the palismen-carving craft and us seeing him mastering it in the epilogue, there would've been many setbacks. Many cuts and splinters via mistakes (thus, more wounds and scars...small, but numerous) and bandages on his hands, like what happened with the sewing needle. Thus, many times when he was reminded of what happened with his best friend. I can imagine that on the more difficult days of learning under Dell, remorse and horrible memories eating into him, he'd be more at risk of leaving more cuts because it would be harder to focus. There would've been days where he got close to giving up.

In his arc, this changed everything:

He was found by a free-spirited, strong-willed palisman.

This was when things began to be truly dangerous:

but by then he gathered enough courage to finally question Belos directly.

What a high price to pay. Recovery from trauma is certainly that way in real life too. But it led him on that path towards transformation, towards what he truly wanted.

In his old life, he'd point a staff at others to intimidate, to instill fear, and be Belos's instrument in furthering a cause that Hunter didn't truly support.

In the future, he generously gives palismen to others from the heart, via new creations made with his own hands, to bring more love, connection and wonder into the world. Letting others live out their truth via the bonds forged with their new palismen, the same kind of truth he himself had to fight so hard for.

If we rewind back to what the Bat Queen said in Hunting Palismen:

contrast that with this point in Hunter's arc:

Still blocked and numbed out from fully experiencing the worst thing he had ever been through: being possessed and in that process, slaying Flapjack.

Willow and Gus had just began to reach that vulnerability within him, moving him with their love and support (which is why the anger he had for around 2/3 of For the Future began to subside).

But it wasn't enough.

In the finale, he gets some temporary respite and relief:

But I believe the real gruelling work was to begin beyond this exact point:

More vulnerability ahead, to pave the way for healing.

Putting the scene of him looking at the old Flyer Derby photo (in For the Future) next to the scene where the Bat Queen sums up what palismen are all about...it indicates to me how steep the climb would be to connect with the full range of his emotions and memories, which parallels his development under Dell's mentorship. To bring some beauty out of that horror he has endured. To bring about the conviction that yes, he deserved Flapjack's gift, from Flapjack's sacrifice.

It would've been years before he would confidently and effortlessly rest in the truth of who he really is, and who he would like to be (remember his "Even if I'm not who I'm supposed to be, I like who I am right now" in front of the mirror, right before getting possessed?).

Liberating himself from enmeshment with his violent abuser and that old life, a process he'd have to repeat again and again even beyond Belos's death. Changing that narrative of "supposed to":

into freely choosing the person he would like to become after Flapjack granted him love and literal life. We receive the one clue that he wanted to freely choose, as early as this scene:

When it comes to palismen, we have "emotion" and "conviction" and also the deepest wishes that witches have in their hearts.

For emotion to flow freely, there must be vulnerability, generosity and love: Hunter integrating even the most difficult emotions into his story.

For him to grow into acceptance of his future major role, it would have involved wrestling with many questions to reach that place of conviction.

Headcanons: The Owl House

In no particular order:

Luz and Camila took Amity, Hunter, Gus and Willow to Comic Con dressed like characters from Cosmic Frontier. They actually got to meet the creator(s) of Cosmic Frontier, who were very bemused by Gus and Hunter asking a multitude of questions and Gus’ warning about the giraffes. Luz and Amity got to hang out with fans of The Good Witch Azura.

After the Collector installed the new portal door, Jacob Hopkins managed to get out of jail and attempted to sneak into the house. The last anyone heard from Jacob, he was trying to set up an online fundraiser to get home from Mars (when he really was sent to a place called Quinhagak, Alaska.)

Months after Belos fell, Alador and Odalia divorced. Odalia tried to revive their original arms business, but it fell flat. Amity, Edric and Emira never spoke to her again.

Masha learned the truth about Vee and the Demon Realm. In fact, they’re one of the first humans to attend Gus’ Human Student Exchange Program.

Some sketchy ex-Coven Heads (the Potions Head, Terra, & Adrian) and Kikimora attempted to take over the Boiling Isles and replace the vacancy left by Belos. This was quickly thwarted by the B.A.T.T.s C.A.T.T.s and the Hexside squad and a thorough investigation and trial took place. Unsurprisingly, Odalia was also implicated in the plot because of the subpar Abomotons that were used. The plotters and Odalia were banished from the Boiling Isles and sent to Titan Trapper Island to live out their sentence. Kikimora worked out a plea deal and that’s how she was found working with Matt Tholomule to rebuild Bonesborough.

Eda and her dad have a better relationship these days, to Gwendolyn’s delight. Dell and Gwendolyn have also doted on King and Hunter. In fact, Eda was the one who introduced Hunter to Dell after Luz mentioned that Hunter wanted to learn how to carve Palismen.

A delegation was sent to Titan Trapper Island, and Bill is no longer the leader there. Tarak was appointed as the new leader and he promised that he and his people will not to go after the last Titan (King). It also helped that The Collector was included in that delegation to seal the deal and promised to build a portal between the two islands if the Titan Trappers behaved...and changed their way of dressing and the name of their island.

Lilith unlocked her harpy form the same way Eda did: with cookies made by Hooty. However, it wasn’t as “smooth” as Eda’s transformation, but with the help from Eda, Gwendolyn, and Camila, she was able to take control of her transformations. Hooty was also temporarily banned from the kitchen. Right after she managed this, Lilith showed off her transformation in front of Flora.

Luz told Eda what Papa Titan told her, and Eda felt honored. Though Eda was a bit offended about the Titan questioning her homemade apple blood recipe.

The Therapy Coven had never been busy after the fall of Belos. Hunter and Raine in particular spent some time with them because of the shared trauma of possession by Belos.

Hunter elected to stay with Darius, though he's always welcome with the Nocedas back in the Human Realm, with the Parks, the Blights (minus Odalia), Eda, and the senior Clawthornes.

Willow introduced Hunter to her dads after Hunter finished gushing about sewing and wolves with Darius and Eberwolf.

Boscha peaked in high school.

The Bat Queen sensed that there was something about Hunter, and Hunter told her about Flapjack’s sacrifice. After that talk, Hunter also became welcome in The Bat Queen’s forest.

Luz and Amity got more “mundane, slice-of-life dates”, both in the human realm and the demon realm.

The Collector visits King from time to time, and the Hexside squad learned to relax around them and teach them about how to approach people and play other games.

There was an attempt to introduce Camila to the food in the Boiling Isles. Suffice to say, she was only able to eat griffin eggs like Luz, though she found the animals there quite fascinating.

Viney and Jerbo eventually became friends again, to Barkus’ relief. (Barkus knew they would become friends, it was a matter of when.)

Principal Bump officially retired as Principal the following year. That was not the end of his love of education because he spent the next year to reach out to Glandus and St. Epiderm about revising their curriculum and offering multiple magic tracks.

Eve and the Witnits again -Walpurga the concealment stone's Misadventures

In case anyone wanted to see that. If think if Philip Wittebane ever had a palisman it should be some kind of parasite like him, which is why the AU art I did for my commission sheet of him had a cuckoo as his designated bird-pal.

Voolly can however turn into various adjacent forms depending on what environment she's in, though her default mode is to a tick/bedbug. But sometimes she gets bloated and coughs up her insides which ShifterPip has to put back.

She's still totally NOT a palisman, though. Really.

I think the transformation dynamic I invented for Pip and her is like the thing Ben 10 uses to transform but I wouldn't know cause I never watched Ben 10.

The Empress: The Bat Queen

Upright: Nurturing, motherhood, protectiveness, nature, creativity, abundance

Reversed: Overbearing, codependent, smothering, lack of growth, negligence, insecurity

The Empress card represents aspects typically associated with motherhood, such as nurturing and protectiveness. The Bat Queen embodies this in her protectiveness over her three children, as well as all the palismen in her care. The Empress’ strong association with nature and abundance fits the Bat Queen’s forest home, her wealth, and her connection to the rejuvenation of the Palistrom tree population alongside Del Clawthorne.

The Empress reversed carries negative connotations of motherhood, such as overbearing and smothering tendencies—shown by the Bat Queen in Escape of the Palisman, when she refuses to let Owlbert return to Luz despite her efforts to prove her regret for mishandling him, and Owlbert’s own desire to leave. She lets her own insecurities about being an abandoned palisman get in the way of healing from her past, but is shown to be working past those issues when she brings the abandoned palismen to Hexside so they can again find their own witches to partner with.

Hunter drew his knees up to his chin. “Do you think … have you ever known anyone else like me?” He asked the giant palisman.

The Bat Queen shook her massive head. “Is like I told when first you came to study. The others of your line, I have not met.”

Hunter’s eyebrows shot up. He smiled sadly. Yes, when he first studied with Dell, and the Bat Queen, after he’d spent long hours working through his guilt, he’d asked if the Bat Queen had ever met the other clones of Caleb Wittebane.

But that wasn’t the question at hand.

“I mean…” He cleared his throat and took a deep breath. “Have there been … others that you’ve known like me”

So let me get this straight, so far The Bat Queen and Hunter are the only two characters who are shown to be able to understand palisman-speak, right? All the other witches might talk to their palismen the way a human might talk to their pets: some sort of communication is happening, but the information is exchanged through tone, touch, gestures and body language, but not through the actual words that are spoken. The Bat Queen and Hunter are different though:

The Bat Queen is able to communicate with the other palismen directly because she herself used to be a palisman on someone's staff thousands of years ago, this one's pretty straightforward.

Hunter, on the other hand, well, he's is a grimwalker and the grimwalker recipe is Belos's book includes palistrum wood as one if the ingredients which suggests that Hunter himself is part-palisman or at least exhibits some palisman-like qualities one of which might be the ability to understand palisman language.

Him and Flapjack are shown to be having full on conversations with one another. One's chirping, the other's speaking English, somehow both are able to understand each other perfectly and it's so SO adorable, but I'm pretty sure that's not a normal thing that just happens between a palisman and its witch. We don't have any other examples of communication happening this way and the only reason no other character in the show pointed it out as somehow remarkable is because they just happen to never do it in front of other people.

The other palisman-like quality he might potentially an interlock on his hand. That is, admittedly, pretty unlikely since those usually go on plisman's feet, but idk maybe Belos assembled him wrong lol? Hunter has been shown to be sensitive about his hands and to never take off his gloves so an interlock could be a plausible explanation for all this

Totally crack idea that 1) Camila someday wants to adopt a Palisman 2) she says something like "I want to take care of my children and all hurt creatures" and 3) the Bat Queen strong agrees so hard that she becomes Camila's Palisman. Then they go around being an unstoppable partnership of fiercely protective moms.

There's a grief therapist who opened the first grief therapy facility of its kind in the world - a carefarm (Selah Carefarm in Arizona) where the animals and scenery are the main "therapists", not the staff who monitor things there. It's definitely different from the colder, more detached, prescriptive and clinical model of mental healthcare that most people expect from the mental health sector.

Here's what's most fascinating: all the animals there are rescue animals who have experienced healing. The founder observed that because the animals have known much suffering, they are excellent at modeling qualities such as trust and generosity for the grieving individuals and families that seek treatment spending some time at the farm, compared to animals who have not gone through such adversity. They don't learn and teach this out of a textbook.

Which brings me to my thoughts about how these palismen:

including the ones that Hunter was tasked to capture and hand over to Belos, would play a very good role in integrating the collective grief the Boiling Isles has experienced under Belos's reign.

Even Flapjack is a great example: he has known the pain of bereavement and separation for centuries. It definitely translates into the patience, wisdom and courage that he models for Hunter..

Palismen like Clover, Emmi and even Maya, and the unnamed ones like Viney's, came from the same batch.

I believe the Bat Queen can therefore be a wellspring of the positive qualities listed above too, and in her little arc you do see it in action by comparing her bitterness and reactiveness in Escape of the Palismen versus how she softened in Hunting Palismen. At her core I think she would have tremendous generosity too.

Forever will be mad at Disney for cutting the show off at the knees because goddamn if my curious ass doesn’t want to know what was up with the Bat Queen. Was she the Titan’s Palisman? And her whistle never got used, and I for one would’ve LOVED to see her in some sort of combat. And I just KNOW it in my soul that this plot would’ve been explored had it not been cut-off, Dana Terrace and all Owl House crew I absolutely love you, I am barking my complaints at Disney alone.
