It's honestly so weird seeing trees with yellow leaves and ads for pumpkin spice lattes and a million tweets and posts about how fall is finally here, only to step outside and be hit with a wall of humid summer-like heat

So, you’ve talked a little about the climate of Himring, but I’m the annoying type of person that needs numbers. How many degrees is it in the different seasons? How long do the seasons last for? If it were comparable to a place on Earth, where would that be (Norway maybe?) ? Sorry if this is a stupid question or you’ve already answered it somewhere lol :)
Not annoying!
World Building Masterlist which has the other Himring posts!
I hope this is ok! As always please feel free to ask more! I enjoy your questions!
So first a note on the Calendar
I will make a more detailed post on the months and seasons and a post on the seasons can by found in my second headcanon masterlist
Our source for this is an analysis of Tolkien’s many calendars called The Reckoning of Time
There are six seasons described in both Sindarin and Quenya;, Spring, Summer, Autumn or Harvest, Fading, Winter and Stirring. Spring, autumn, fading and stirring last 54 days each and Summer and winter last 72 days.
Their dates for seasons are also somewhat different than in the Northern hemisphere
Elves begin their year in the late month of Gwaeron, an equivalent of March. Spring lasts from March 21st until the middle of May. Summer is from mid May until late July. Autumn is from here until Late September. Then, before the start of fading there is a period of three days. Fading lasts until early November when Winter begins. Winter lasts until late January when stirring begins which lasts until mid March.
When exactly a system of twelve months was established in Beleriand is unclear (though it’s worth noting that twelve base systems for Valarin years existed in the Years of the Trees)
(Túrin’s birth month is given as Gwaeron or March though the calendar used by the humans was primarily associated with Númeanor.)
I go with the idea though that it did originate in the First Age, at least in some form
That being said, as I think you implied in your ask, the official start and finish of a season is not necessarily the same as the cultural or local understanding of a season based on the surrounding climate (for example spring might officially start on March 21st in much of the Northern hemisphere but not all places consider it officially spring until snowfall becomes less frequent which might not happen until April)
Himring winters definitely last longer, typically the period from Mid November (Hísimë in Quenya, Hithui in Sindarin) to late March.
The transitional seasons named by the elves, Stirring and Fading, are far less defined in the March of Maedhros.
Spring, when the snow melts and plants start to grow is typically from early April to late June with the high summer characterized by long days and the warmest weather lasting only two months, during July and August. Autumn or Harvest and Fading blend together from September to mid November and finally, Stirring is typically considered only truly in the weeks before the beginning of spring
Winter temperatures generally range -8 degrees Celsius/18 degrees Fahrenheit to -25 Celsius/-15 Fahrenheit (including windchill)
Summers are fairly mild with an average of 21 degrees Celsius or 70 degrees Fahrenheit. It rarely gets above 78 degrees Fahrenheit/26 degrees Celsius.
spring is still very cold with 40 to 50 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 to 10 degrees Celsius being common.
Autumn temperatures are mild at first but drop quickly with heavy winds. Similar temperatures to spring at first with temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or 4 degrees Celsius often starting in Mid October if not earlier
Precipitation is actually low though snow might remain on the ground for much longer around the year. Precipitation in the taiga is usually rain the summer as well as snow and fog.
As for real life place comparisons, yay! This means I get to talk more about ecoregions and biomes! (Explanation here)
The most likely biomes are boreal forest and taiga or tundra. Tundras are defined by tree growth that is (negatively) impacted by low temperatures though the growing season like with taiga might be longer than in other places as the native flora has a temperature to trigger growth that is lower than plants in warmer climates. Taiga, also known as boreal or snow forests are defined by coniferous forests of mainly pine, spruce and larch in the global North in colder climates.
As always please feel free to ask more!

dude fr fr re: temperature. we live on different parts of the planet but here the highs are *usually* like low 50sF/12c-ish and the lows are like 35F/1-2c. however we went from 15+ degrees above our average high last week to now about 15 degrees below it. what the absolute fuck indeed.
Absolute insanity! The even weirder part is that my home state is in a heatwave right now; the temps up there are ranging around 34 -36 C / 93 - 100f. Which is unusually hot for this time of year.
I know the negative IOD + 3rd year in a row of la niña gives us some weird fuckin weather, but also, not usually this weird.

Indian Stick Bug
Enclosure:
They need to be in an enclosure that is 3x their height and 2x their length in width
15 gallons is a good minimum for housing a few insects
Good ventilation and mesh screen
They can be housed together
They need an average temp of about 70-75 degrees F with a nighttime temp in the 60s
Humidity should be 75%
White lights drain moisture, so blue or red lights are better for nocturnal viewing
Substrates are hard to clean, but peat moss and soil mixtures help with moistures. Paper towels are the easiest to clean though. Substrate shouldn’t be damp.
Spot clean daily and change once a month
Diet/Feeding habits:
They eat leaves like hawthorne, oak, privet, ivy, bramble, and rose leaves.
The best way to feed them is to have a small narrow water jar in their enclosure with the leaves sticking out and the rest of the jar sealed up so the insects don’t drown
You can also leave the leaves around the enclosure and just mist them daily for hydration and humidity
They can also eat organic washed lettuce
Age identification:
Their average lifespan is usually only a year or 2 years
Maturity is reached at about 5 months old
Physical traits:
Very fragile
Adult size is 4-5 inches max
They will most likely lay eggs in their substrate and you can’t stop this, but you can kill the eggs by freezing them overnight
They can reproduce in the absence of a male, so you will have eggs no matter what
They hang upside when they are molting, shedding their skin, and need time alone to do so
They molt about 5 times before they read adulthood
They are brown and blend in with tree branches for camouflage
Personality:
Docile
Slow-moving
Never attack or bite
Nocturnal
Health concerns:
Fungus and mold can kill them easily, so good ventilation is needed
Pesticides in food can kill them easily
You need to be gentle as they are fragile
Holding them during or a week after they molt is incredibly stressful and can damage their skin
If they don’t have enough space to molt they will die or become deformed
Handling:
Only grasp by their body and gently between your thumb and index finger
Let them crawl onto your hand or place them on your hand
Wash hands before and after handling
Only handle when needed

Notes:
A young Man named Steven Hand (Stevo) did Helen in 6:29 at LHCF about 10 years ago.  I watched.  He did it correctly.  It’s in the Blog.  I have searched the internet repeatedly and have never found a “Helen” result lower than 6:53.  However, It seems that no one believes this besides me.  That especially goes for poor Larry, who did his best but was 2 minutes slower than Stevo.  I wish Robert had been here today because he would have broken Stevo’s record and then everybody would believe me.
Ed’s Brother Kyle visited today.  Kyle owns CrossFit Serenity up in Hopkinsville, Ky.  Kyle and his very fit and lovely wife Lindsay have visited here many times over the past 10 years.  Recently Kyle has not brought Lindsay along when he comes to the Barn.  I don’t understand why.  I always treat her very hospitably and make sure she gets a new T-shirt.
August 23 Tuesday and August 25 Thursday we are in desperate need of a coach at the Barn.  The WODs will be programmed.  All you have to do is arrive early, open the doors, turn on the lights, pretend to Coach, and have a cold beer.  RIGHT ?   So let us know and we’ll get you signed up.  (Robert is not available).  Otherwise we will have to shut it down.
Thursday at 4 PM.   Wine tasting night,  remember ?   Bring snacks, a bottle.  Have fun.

The Ubiquitous Betta Care Guide
Literally everyone and their mother has written a care guide about bettas, but I felt like I could provide a care guide based around my opinions and experiences in keeping bettas. I’ve kept bettas since I was about 15 years old, they were one of my first fish, and I fell in love with them and at one point I had over a dozen bettas at one time! That’s ridiculous now, but this was 2005/2006, bettas were cheaper and not as disposable then, definitely lasting for the oft-quoted “2-3 year” lifespans that people struggle to see today. Nowadays, I struggle to be able to get a betta to live past 6 months. So, what’s happening? Am I suddenly taking worse care of bettas than I did when I was 15?
Well, no, all of my most recent bettas were kept in tanks that were over 50 gallons, well planted, my tap water is soft (kH of 5), my pH is neutral (7-7.4) and my water is easily modified with botanicals or wood to be about 6 if need be. They live in filtered tanks with 80 degree water, eat nothing but live or frozen food, and never fall ill with disease or parasites. That’s more than I can say about teenage me. I dealt with a lot of issues, obviously, from bacterial to fungal infections because of my ignorance, but nowadays I can’t say I’ve had to treat a betta for anything, they just sorta..die, and at seemingly random too. What’s going on?
Today, bettas come in every color, shape and variety you can think of, which wasn’t the case when I was 15. The reason for the huge variety is the desire for more ornamental fish, but for commercial selling, there’s mass breeding on an industrial scale which leads to poor stock, inbreeding, and deformed fish and genetic issues we just can’t see. It doesn’t matter if it’s a local breeder or from a store, they’re all coming from the same stock now.
I’ve touched about betta problems in the past, and if you’ve followed my blog for a few years or see me in my discord server (Fish Tea), then you already know how I feel. That’s not what this post is about! This post is about caring for your betta, what I’ve learned in my experiences with them, and how to treat and care for the common ailments that befall them.
THEIR CARE:
Min tank size: 10 gallons. Why 10 gallons? In all my time keeping bettas, they do best in larger tanks that allow them to move, they get proper muscle tone in larger tanks because they’re able to move, and I’ve never had an issue with constipation in bettas when placed in larger tanks because movement makes it easier for animals to pass their waste. I can’t think of any other 2 inch-3 inch, active fish that anyone would suggest for a 5 gallon, but for some reason people all say 5 gallons is fine. This is MY recommendation, this is something I will tell people to follow, but whether or not you agree is up to you. You can keep them as you wish, but I prefer having bettas in larger tanks.
Temperature: 80+. In the wild, the Betta genus comes from hot, humid environments in Southeast Asia, living in shallow bodies of water that can be over 80 degrees in temperature. Wild Betta splendens have been observed living in rice paddies with an average temperature of 84 degrees (Jaroensutasinee & Jaroensutansinee, 2001). While it can be argued that domestic bettas are different from their wild counterparts, we have not bred them for cold resistance, and bettas display poor health in colder temps, lethargy, loss of appetite, bloating and constipation.
Water Params: My position about water parameters has evolved over time, but I still think a betta does best in neutral to acidic waters, because a betta in a pH of 8+ will not have a great time. Essentially, most people’s tap water will be fine, you don’t need RO water to keep a domestic betta.
Feeding: I feed my bettas live food in the form of blackworms, fruit flies, random small bugs I find, a spider….anything that’s an invert and they can swallow, they can eat it. I also feed them frozen foods such as bloodworms, krill, mysis, cyclops and sometimes just cut up cocktail shrimp. You can feed them live and frozen, and you can also give them prepared foods, like New Life Spectrum, Bug Bites, or Bug Pro. They have excellent sources of protein that are not derived from soy like other brands such as Hikari, Omega One, Tetra, Aqueon and such. You can also make repashy grub pie and feed them that.
Furnishings: Bettas naturally come from environments that are dense with vegetative growth (Jaroensutasinee & Jaroensutansinee, 2001), which means your bettas should also be in tanks that are filled to the brim with plants! I like live plants, but you can use soft silks too, anything that can provide them some cover that they can serpentine and swim through. My rule of thumb usually is if you can see straight through one end of the tank with no broken lines of sight, you don’t have enough plants. Lack of proper coverage can make them stressed out, lethargic and more susceptible to illness and refusal to eat.
Tank mates: If you want to keep bettas with other fish, I suggest a 20 long as a minimum. If your betta has long fins, avoid getting any boisterous, nipping fish like tetras. Kuhli loaches make wonderful tankmates for bettas because they tolerate the high temps a betta likes, as well as Hypancistrus plecos, some corydoras, smaller spiny eels and more. I don’t recommend ever putting shrimp in with bettas, aside from larger shrimp like amanos, because shrimp are a betta’s natural prey and they will hunt them all down!
WHAT IF MY BETTA GETS SICK?
Bettas can and will get ill, you will most likely encounter an issue with your betta one way or another, but what can you do to help? In most cases, the problem is lack of proper care and poor water conditions. The best way to insure your betta remains happy and healthy is to have a clean tank. The easiest way to do this is to make sure your tank is cycled and you do regular, weekly water changes of 25%-30%.
When you buy a betta, make sure you are picking out an active one, don’t try to be a saint and pick out one laying on its side, half dead. The likelihood is that it will just die, you’ll feel upset, and then you’ll go out and try it again. I’ve been there! It doesn’t work! Get a fish that wiggles at you and looks like it wants to kick your ass. That’s a good betta.
Here’s some common betta ailments:
Popeye: This happens because your water quality is poor and a bacterial infection brews up, causing fluid retention that can pop the eye out. Your best course of action is to address the water quality issue, then use an antibiotic such as kanaplex or metroplex.
Bloat and constipation: The betta is fed too much, the tank is unheated, the water quality is poor, the tank is too small, and more. This is a symptom of an underlying issues, and it needs to be addressed by seeing what you’re doing wrong. To treat it, give your betta a soak in an epsom salt bath for 10-15 minutes in a bucket or other container, with 1 tbs of epsom salt per gallon. Feed them some frozen food like daphnia or brine shrimp to aid in passing their waste.
Ich: This can literally happen to anyone, and it sometimes just. Happens. Inexplicably. Whether or not it’s introduced or always in the water, it can crop up in even the warmest of tanks, as ich nowadays seems to have gotten particularly strong. Up your temps to about 86, your betta can handle temps into the 90’s, and use an ich treatment, I usually do Ich X, follow the directions on the bottle. You can also do a salt dip on the betta at the first signs of ich, 1 tbs of aquarium or table salt per gallon in a separate container, do a 10 minute soak. Up the temps and see if the ich subsides, if not, follow through with medication.
Fin rot: This is a water quality issue, you need to address this first before proceeding with treatment, as usually providing clean, warm water is enough to stop fin rot. If you do this but notice the fin rot is especially aggressive or starting to proceed onto the body, treat with an antibiotic such as kanaplex.
Velvet: This is a parasitic infection like ich, though for this one it comes from yet another water quality issue. It can happen in the store they come from, or it can happen in your home if you’re not up and up on your care. You would treat it the same way as ich, however shut your lights off, as it appears to be light sensitive.
Lethargy, bottom sitting, loss of appetite: These are symptoms of a bigger issue, be it water quality, age, or simply just something going wrong internally that we can’t see. If your tank is too cold, you’re not feeding enough or you’re not on top of water changes, you can help by adjusting all of that. If it’s from age or something else, all you can do is wait and see how much longer the betta has left, or euthanize if you feel he won’t get better. You can attempt an epsom salt bath, raising temps, and feeding live or frozen, but at that point it’s palliative care rather than a solution.
What if you just got your betta, and it seemed fine, and then one day it didn’t look good and the next you found it dead? Well, circling back to my long winded intro, you can see that the answer is in the poor breeding practices. Bettas are not as strong or hardy as they used to be, in fact they seem to just be about as durable as tissue paper nowadays and will die after a few months or a year, with some exceptions. It can be disheartening to feel like you’re failing at a fish that’s touted as being one of the hardiest fish out there, but I promise you that if you’re providing the best care for them, they’ll still die early, and you’re not at fault. I still get bettas, but I only buy one after another passes, and I try to not spend more than $15 on one. I settle with the fact they won’t live as long, and I enjoy them while I have them, and if you feel the same way, go for it.
If you’d like to learn more about bettas, their alternatives and more, the best way to reach me and a whole community of experiences keepers is through Fish Tea, an lgbt+ friendly discord server dedicated to all things aquatic.

It used to be that when a 13-year-old wanted a binder for school, it meant a trip to Staples. For today’s tweens and teens who identify as gender-nonconforming or transgender, shopping for a binder may mean a compression undergarment worn to flatten breasts.
Made of thick spandex and nylon, binders resemble tight undershirts, creating a masculine profile. The American Academy of Pediatrics has estimated that 0.7 percent of 13- to 17-year-olds in the United States, about 150,000, identify as transgender. Dr. John Steever, assistant professor of pediatrics at Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center in Manhattan, who runs its transgender health program and has evaluated over 500 patients from ages 8 to 23, said that almost 95 percent of the transmasculine teenagers in the program bind.
Binders are not classified as medical devices, but some doctors and parents have concerns about their safety. (Common-sense binding guidelines include: Don’t use Ace bandages or duct tape, don’t bind at night, limit a binder to eight to 10 hours a day, don’t shower in it, don’t wear two, and don’t wear one that is too small.)
Though breast compression has been around hundreds of years — think of corsets — commercial binders, primarily sold online, have been available for about 15 years. Marli Washington, 26, a transgender man and founder of GC2B Transitional Apparel, an online binder company, wrote in an email that the company had had “at least a 200 percent growth” since 2015.
Some transgender teens say they buy binders so that they can “pass” as male or to diminish feelings of discomfort with the body known as body dysphoria. And though wearing binders is temporary, their use can be associated with later medical transition. Dr. Steever said most of his patients who use binders “then tell me the next things they want to do, like testosterone, mastectomy and maybe phalloplasty. Ninety-five percent of the people I’ve evaluated get started on cross-hormones.” (Cross-gender hormone treatment in young people may affect future fertility, but data is limited.)
For transgender or gender-nonconforming teens who cannot afford binders, which start at around $30, there are free binder programs. FTM Essentials runs an application and lottery for those age 24 and under. Point of Pride, a transgender nonprofit based in Eugene, Ore., ships binders free to people of any age who express need and has sent over 4,000 nationally and internationally.
Often, teenagers first learn about binders through YouTube videos hosted by young people. An instructional video called “Chest binding” by a Norwegian teenager named Kovu Kingsrod, who wears as many as three sports bras a day, has more than a million views.
Tami Staas, 51, a schoolteacher who lives in Tempe, Ariz., and is president of the Arizona Trans Youth and Parent Organization, has a 21-year-old son who was assigned female at birth and who started binding at 12. He wore a binder about 12 hours a day for five years. He had trouble in gym class and breathing trouble.
“It was like trying to run a marathon in a tight bustier,” Ms. Staas said. “It was difficult for me to weigh: Am I doing the right thing? Is it causing irreparable damage? It was very difficult to watch him cause himself physical pain in order to be comfortable in his own skin.” At 18, he had a double mastectomy, or top surgery, and now takes testosterone weekly.
A 17-year-old in Phoenix who binds daily and asked to be identified only by the initials J.M. said he started binding at 13. To maximize the compression, he bought a binder one size too small and wore it at night. “My arms and hands would feel numb and tingly off and on,” he emailed, “from how tight the material was around that area.” When he removed the binder, he found his skin “severely chafed and raw.”
He added: “The divots left behind from those times took months to heal. In all honesty, I couldn’t have cared less about the damage being created, just that my chest was flat.”
Dr. Ilana Sherer, a pediatrician and founder of the Child and Adolescent Gender Center at the University of California, San Francisco, Benioff Children’s Hospital, emailed that “binders can be physically very uncomfortable and can cause problems especially if overused or ill-fitting, so it’s important that every youth weigh the risks and benefits for themselves and have access to quality, well-fitting binders.”
But even those are correlated with negative health effects. Though there have been no studies on binding and adolescent health, because of ethical concerns about research on minors, a 2017 study by students at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Boston University School of Medicine, and the Boston University School of Public Health looked at 1,800 transmasculine adults with a median age of 23. Seventy-eight percent of respondents said they had bound for over a year, over half bound an average of seven days a week, and 66.6 percent were interested in top surgery. An additional 13.1 percent had already had the surgery.
Participants reported a statistically significant improvement in mood after binding. They also reported decreased gender dysphoria, anxiety and depression. As for physical effects, 97.2 percent of the group that bound reported at least one negative physical symptom, such as back pain, overheating, chest pain and shortness of breath. Other symptoms included numbness, bad posture and lightheadedness.
Commercial binders were highly associated with negative outcomes (20 of 28 negative outcomes), as were elastic bandages (14 of 28), and duct tape or plastic wrap (13 of 28). One reason may be that commercial binders lend a false sense of security, leading wearers to keep them on too long or sleep in them.
The American Academy of Pediatrics does not have an official position on binding. But in a policy statement last year on care of transgender and gender-diverse children and adolescents, it advocated a “gender-affirmative care model,” where providers convey that “variations in gender identity and expression are normal aspects of human diversity.”
But some worry that parental efforts to affirm a young person’s identity by supporting binding may contribute to self-hate. Jane Wheeler, a co-founder of an organization called Rethink Identity Medicine Ethics, which examines standards of care for gender-variant children and youth, said binding “feeds into a normalization of body hatred, that some forms of body hatred are O.K.”
Brie Jontry is the spokeswoman for 4thWaveNow, which describes itself as “a community of parents and others concerned about the medicalization of gender atypical youth.” Her daughter, now 15, told Ms. Jontry that she was trans at 11 and wanted a binder. Ms. Jontry bought her a running bra, but her daughter felt it was not constricting enough, refusing to leave the house until she got a binder.
The first one she tried, at age 12, was too tight, Ms. Jontry thought, so they returned it and ordered a larger one. Her daughter, who was home-schooled, bound at home and every time she went out. She stopped running, rock-climbing, backpacking and swimming.
“We would go for our evening walk and she would get winded and dizzy,” Ms. Jontry said. “She stopped climbing trees. She stopped doing things where any degree of upper-body flexibility was important.”
“Binding is not benign,” Ms. Jontry said. “It encourages the idea that people’s distress and anger and trauma should be turned inward toward their own bodies instead of outward toward the culture that feels oppressive to them.”
Dr. Sherer wrote in an email that “it’s strange to me that someone would think of a binder as being a form of self-harm when there are so many other garments used by gender-typical people to change their appearance that are also extremely uncomfortable (hello high heels …).”
But binder use in teenagers may become a thing of the past. Ms. Staas, the Arizona teacher, said that several members of her group take hormone blockers to prevent developing female sex characteristics.
Those youths, she wrote in an email, “will not develop breast tissue and therefore will not have a need to bind their chests.”

7 Steps To Ensure Your Equipment Is Winter Ready
It’s that time of year again. The changing leaves of fall are slipping into the snow flurries of winter. If you’re a diesel owner and expect your truck to be ready when you need it most, it’s time to take action. It’s time to ensure you are winter ready. From testing the health of your batteries, adding anti-gel fuel additive to the tank, & changing motor oils, this 7 step system is designed to ensure you never miss a beat regardless of what Mother Nature throws your way.
1. Test Your Batteries
The average battery lasts between two and five years. How many years have you had yours? After enduring a hot summer (where corrosion and fluid evaporation often occur), followed by a lack of cold cranking amps capacity once colder temperatures arrive, winter has a way of killing weak batteries. To avoid being stranded, now is the time to test the health of your batteries.
Tumblr media
With the engine off, set your multimeter to any voltage setting above 15 volts and connect to the battery leads. A fully charged battery should measure at least 12.6 volts. Then make sure voltage doesn’t drop below 10 volts as you crank the engine over (below 10 volts is a sign of a dying battery). With the engine running, voltage should measure between 13.7 to 14.7 volts. Also make sure you clean up the battery cables for a corrosion-free, good connection. Last but not least, it’s also good practice to test the output of your alternator (they don’t last forever, either), as a unit with the inability to recharge the batteries can result in a truck that won’t start, and a double whammy repair cost (new batteries and alternator).
2. Glow Plug Testing and Replacement (If Applicable)
Should your diesel employ glow plugs to aid cold starts (like all Duramax and Power Stroke engines do), it’s important to make sure they’re in great shape before winter hits. In the Duramax segment, glow plug failure is a pretty bug deal. For this reason, many neglect replacing them while the truck seems to be starting fine (during spring or summer), but end up regretting it come fall and winter. Luckily, the glow plugs can be accessed externally on all Duramax (as well as on most Power Stroke engines) by pulling the inner fender well to access each bank.
Of course, starting with fresh glow plugs is never a bad idea. If you go this route just remember one thing: never cheap out on them! Stick with brand new, OE replacements, as some aftermarket glow plug tips have been known to swell, crack, or break off, and drop in- cylinder. On engines that don’t necessarily throw a CEL when a glow plug or glow plug relay fails (such as with the 7.3L Power Stroke, shown), it pays to hit them with a test light to make sure they’re in good working order.
3. Test Your Block Heater
In frigid conditions, a block heater can be a life saver. Unfortunately, most diesel owners don’t discover that theirs has stopped working until they need it. You don’t be that guy. Testing to see if your block heater is working is quite simple, since they’re either working or  they’re not working.
Clean off the prongs on the plug, get out your multimeter, set it to ohms (to show resistance), and attach its leads to the plug prongs. A reading of 9 to 25 ohms indicates a working block heater. Any lower than that and you’ll want to inspect the block heater cord itself. We’ve seen wires pulled out of the plug (usually due to stretching the cord in order to reach an outlet), which requires a simple wiring repair.
4. Then Use Your Block Heater
You wouldn’t believe how many diesel owners don’t utilize their block heater in sub-zero degree temperatures. More often times than not, it’s due to the owner not even knowing his or her truck is equipped with one!
Tumblr media
5. Use an Anti-Gel Fuel Additive
In severe cold, even the best winter blend diesel fuel can reach its cloud point (the measure of diesel’s low-temperature operability) and begin to gel up. Due to so many differences in fuel quality existing across North America and the fact that each vehicle’s exposure to cold weather will be different, there is no definitive temperature in which diesel begins to gel. However, most fuels reach their cloud point between 20 degrees F and -18 degrees F. This is why it’s always a good idea to run a fuel additive during winter. Make sure to use an all-season additive or one that’s specifically designed to shine in cold climates.
Tumblr media
We’ve always been fans of Power Service Diesel Fuel Supplement + Cetane Boost. It’s a winterizer/antigel that is used in the cold winter months to prevent fuel gelling and keep fuel-filters from plugging with ice and wax. When temperatures drop, paraffin (wax) in ULSD fuel will gel stopping fuel from flowing through the engine, and water in the fuel can freeze on the facings of fuel-filters, blocking fuel flow. It provides trouble-free winter operation for diesel fuel.
Diesel Fuel Supplement +Cetane Boost is intended for use only during cold winter months when temperatures drop below +30F. Use Diesel Kleen +Cetane Boost (in the silver bottle) for peak performance in non-winter months. If your vehicle will not start or gain power in cold temperatures, use Diesel 911 (in the red bottle).
6. Change Fuel Filter(s)
It’s a fact that the fuel filter is the most common freeze point for diesel fuel. When compared to what is stored in the fuel tank, a very minimal amount of diesel remains in the fuel filter when your truck is allowed to sit overnight.
Tumblr media
While installing a new fuel filter right now isn’t a guarantee that you won’t have gelling issues, it does offer you a fresh start over what might be a partially clogged cartridge that’s been in use for thousands of miles. Besides, changing fuel filters before winter reduces your chances of having to perform the job during the coldest part of the year. Last but not least, always keep an extra fuel filter and/or water separator in the cab—you never know when you might need it.
7. Ditch the Weight
As if cold starts aren’t hard enough on your batteries, starter and engine, conventional 15 weight motor oils turn to molasses in arctic temps. Switching to a lighter weight (preferably synthetic) oil will greatly improve its cold temperature flow characteristics, thereby saving wear and tear on the engine’s internals.
Tumblr media
Remember, if you’re still running good ‘ole 15W-40 conventional when it’s 30 below, your engine isn’t going to see ample oil pressure for a considerable amount of time following a cold start (between 5 and 30 seconds!).

Attica! Attica!
This sucks but I like Attica as a neurotic republican politician. Idk how to write Leon being mute or whatever I just gave him a stutter bc...communication. Also I dearly wanted Serena to have a solid place in the cast so I was like, what the hell, she can be on Attica’s staff. Idk if she should have an important position like campaign manager or something but rn she’s just an assistant. Also since this is Attica’s POV Serena is less funny and Leon is idk more caring than he actually is bc she perceives them that way (Serena is actually funny and Leon is actually a dick)
Its funny because I’m pretty sure Attica is going to be the “good guy” on the protagonists side and help them and Milo is going to end up being a terrifying source of trouble for everyone. Also I was like ok and rolled the ethnicity dice and was like the Kings can be Chinese and the surname King was changed by their grandfather from Qing when their family really started grabbing power, and then was like ok Serena’s adopted but she’s of Iranian origin (guess that means Danny is too)
$$$$$
Attica King averaged 4 hours of sleep a night. And that was if she was lucky.
Looking at twitter was giving her heart palpitations, but what was she supposed to do, 5 weeks before the Midterm elections? Her numbers guy said that her district would re-elect her by a large margin-- it was red. It had always been red. It wasn’t like that hippie freak who was running against her had a chance in hell. People in Indiana loved her. People in DC though, where she spent considerably more of her time, hated her guts. The vitriol and fake news that journalists were spewing about her online proved that much.
“I’m gonna kill somebody,” Attica said. It was 7 am. She had already been to the gym, showered, sensibly done her hair and make-up, and put on the kind of suit that said ‘listen to me you dummy’. She brandished her phone at her Chief of Staff. “Do you see what they’re saying about me, Leon? They act like I’m some kind of younger, smarter, Chinese female version of Stalin all because they can’t bully me into voting for their stupid gun regulations. People are out there blowing each other up with their minds! What the fuck am I supposed to do, help get rid of guns and leave every sucker who can’t do magic defenseless?”
Leonard, Attica’s Chief of Staff and younger brother, shrugged helplessly. She liked to think of him as the RFK to her JFK. Without the whole getting shot in the head thing. “G-get off twitter,” he said. He was not partaking in the breakfast that Attica’s assistant picked up for the team. Something about the breakfast pastries and espresso made him bitch about how unhealthy it all was. Leon opted to bring a protein shake instead, which worked out for him. At 6 feet tall and weighing over 200 pounds of muscle, he was often mistaken for her bodyguard if he wasn’t dressed up. He kept his black hair shorn close to his head, which didn’t help either. It made him look like he was the type to rip people apart with his bare hands. “You’re obsessing.”
“Where the fuck is Myers?” she asked. “He’s my communications director. Shouldn’t he be out here, I don’t know, directing? Putting an end to all this fake bullshit.” Attica looked at her phone again, pulling up a particularly offensive tweet. “‘ King is unhinged and desperate, putting the needs of lobbyists in front of the needs of her constituents.’--and this is posted with that terrible picture of me, that unflattering close-up where I had pollen in my eyes so they looked red.” She was gripping her phone so tightly that her knuckles went white. “Now whose fault was that? I didn’t have my eye-drops.”
The only other staff member present, Attica’s personal assistant of 3 years, went bug eyed. This was magnified by her thick lensed glasses. She put up her hands defensively and almost dropped the armful of manila folders she was holding. “That’s not my fault, that picture was from when I took some personal time off.”
“That was when you were vacationing in the mental hospital again and I had to rely on a temp for two weeks and was completely up shit creek without you, Serena, so yes it was completely your fault.”
Serena was in her mid 20’s and pretty in a frazzled, underfed, nerdy way. She had only been hired because she was Iranian or something and Attica had been afraid she looked racist after making some allegedly offensive comments while supporting the President’s drone strikes in the Middle East. As it turned out, Serena was brilliant and had graduated from Notre Dame with a degree in Political Science, an inexplicable Chemistry minor, and a desire to work on the Hill. The only reason Attica hadn’t appointed her to a more important position at this point was due to her unfortunate tendency to eat handfuls of pills whenever life got too stressful.
Attica quickly cycled back to the matter at hand. She poured some coffee, which she knew would only make her keep vibrating. It was her 3rd cup of the day. She felt like a hummingbird. “What am I going to do about these people degrading me online?”
From where he sat on the couch, Leon leaned over to out his face in his hands. Dramatic bitch. “For the last time, remember the first amendment.”
“R-r-remember the f-f-first amendment,” Attica repeated in a high pitched child’s voice, mocking him. She chugged the rest of her coffee and caught Serena staring at her like she had lost her mind. At this rate she was going to going to have a heart attack before she turned 40. “Grandfather would have sent someone after those motherfuckers with a crowbar.”
“G-Grandfather was a monster.”
He was right. But being monstrous was just more effective. Who was that old dead guy who said it was better to be feared than loved? Napoleon?
Attica kept looking at her phone. Too bad people didn’t seem to fear her yet. She could feel the blood pounding in her face. When she was angry, her skin turned very red, blotchy and unattractive. It couldn’t be helped. And what she was reading made her angry. Half of what she was mentioned in was negative. And half of those were violent, threats against her. “Here,” she said, landing on an egregious one. “‘King’s giant tits once again distracting everyone from her cloven hooves lol’. I want this person dragged into the street and shot.”
“Jesus C-Christ, c-c-calm down.” The muscles in Leon’s face tightened. He was gritting his teeth.
“Ma’am, maybe you should put your phone away,” said Serena.
Attica kept reading. “‘The NRA owns King but how would she like it if she got used as target practice’. ‘If I saw (pretend this is an at sign)AtticaKingIN in real life I would punch that bitch in the face.’” She began to breathe faster. Were these people from Indiana? Would they vote? Did they actually hate her? Who were these people? “‘King is part of the GOP gestapo’. ‘(at)AtticaKingIN doesn’t care about gun violence in her own state, vote her out!’ ‘I hate that dumb cunt (at)AtticaKingIN she needs to shut her mouth or suck my dick’. ‘I--”
Leon stood up, snatched Attica’s phone out of her hands, then held it above her head where she couldn’t reach it. Attica punched him in the chest but her brother was a wall of muscle and didn’t seem to feel it.
“Seriously, A, you need to c-calm down,” he told her. Attica punched him again. “I don’t want to know about the threats anyone’s making towards you, it’s upsetting. At 9, that lobbyist who works for Madeline C-Caligaris--”
“Do you want some xanax?” Serena interrupted.
Attica spun around to glare at her. She was aware of how flushed she must look. It was just...she cared so much about what people thought about her. “No,” she said coldly, but breathing heavily. She brushed a strand of hair away from her face. Imagine if Grandfather could see her now. After all, he had wanted Leon to head the family business. Hell, before he died, the old man had even expressed regret for treating their youngest..brother, Milo, like a stray dog. But never her. And Attica had tried so hard for all those years and slaved away just to get his validation… “Do you need a xanax, Serena?”
“I do now,” muttered Serena.
Attica tried to grab her phone one more time, then gave up and sat down.
It wasn’t even 7:15.
She took a deep breath to clear her head. “Ok. Tell me about this lobbyist. Calligaris-- that’s the Proverge exec, right?”
Leon nodded curtly. He put his sister’s phone in his breast pocket and sat down next to her. With a sudden rush of urgency, Attica realized that all he had wanted to do was protect her. How had their roles switched like that? When they were little she constantly made herself torment the kids who picked on him for the way he talked. After 30 years he barely even stuttered anymore. “C-can I get those files from Foster v Proverge, please?” Serena leafed through her armful of papers and presented him with the relevant ones. “Thanks. You read this, A?”
“Let’s work under the assumption that I didn’t.” She had been too busy talking to her numbers guy about the polls the previous night to actually look into anything that would affect her policies.
“Proverge wants to build a factory in your district. Magic distillation for use in their products. 200 new jobs. They c-can’t get approval in Indiana anymore-- they c-can’t get approval from most places these days because of all the lawsuits. People protest.”
Attica rolled her eyes. Liberals. “What lawsuits?”
“From the early 2000’s. Proverge distillation factories in Georgia, Tennessee, and Michigan all attempted to c-cover up widespread negative variant medical symptoms that affected workers who were exposed to thauma-slurry being distilled unsafely.” Leon flipped a few pages of the file. “Mostly c-cosmetic. But there were c-claims that the exposure to the slurry also lead to violent psychological problems and some c-clearly unsafe environmental effects.”
People were so whiny. Attica shrugged. “200 new jobs is more important than a couple honest mistakes the company made. I want to make this happen-- an announcement about job creation could really push my numbers in the polls. If protests become a problem, I’ll just send in the cops to clean them up.” She paused. “Or, I’ll send in Milo.”
Leon looked at her like he was trying to peerinto her soul or something. His broad, honest face was genuinely concerned. What did he see in her face? Did he see the will to do whatever she had to? “He’s g-g-getting worse. You c-can’t keep doing that.”
“The fuck I can.”
“He’s not listening to me anymore.” Leon’s face twisted up. Out of the whole family, he was the only one who treated Milo as more than he was. He allowed their deviant half brother to terrorize everyone as he pleased, just because he felt sorry for the bastard. “He’s go-g-going to screw up.”
The thing about Milo, was that someone had to be holding his leash.
“He’s fine,” Attica said with finality. “Maybe if he fucks up bad enough, he’ll actually learn his lesson.”
Leon stood up, handed her phone back, and walked out of the room without saying another word.
“Are you talking about your creepy little brother again?” asked Serena. She was scurrying around, straightening up the breakfast pastries and exuding her nervous energy. “He makes me uncomfortable.”
Attica massaged her forehead. “Me too,” she said. “Can you get in touch with the Proverge people and make sure they’re on their way?”
“On it.”
She could feel a headache coming on. But getting the credit for creating 200 new jobs... it was worth it. It was even worth dealing with Milo. It was worth it. She could be proud of herself. It was worth it. It would all be worth it.
Wouldn’t it?

Tegu
Enclosure:
40 gallon or 36 x 24 x 20 inches is okay for hatchlings, but adults need 8 x 4 x 3 feet long  or 90 gallon tanks, but as always bigger is better
Substrate such as cypress mulch, soil and sand mixtures, and coconut coir are suitable for them and 4 inches is good for babies, but adults need 8 inches (they like to dig)
Never use pine or cedar substrate as these are incredibly toxic to all reptiles
They require 70-90% humidity and mist as frequently as needed to maintain this (getting a humidity monitor may be beneficial)
If kept indoors then they need UVB lighting and a cooler and warmer side to their enclosure to regulate body temp. A day and night cycle should be mandatory as well.
The temp at the basking spot should be 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit; the warmer end closest to the basking spot should stay around 90 to 95 degrees, and the cooler end of the enclosure should be 75 to 80 degrees.
They need fresh water daily and a water dish, one that is large enough for the tegu to soak in is highly recommended. Also having them soak in it twice a week does help with shedding and they love swimming
Low branches are also good for them as they like to climb along with tree trunks, rocks, dig boxes, wiffle balls (with fruits or worms) and many other forms of creative enrichment
You can house multiple together, but you need enough space accordingly and do fine on their own as well. Never house 2 males together though as they can get aggressive along with a male and a female unless you want them to breed. Multiple females are fine though
They can freely roam as long as humidity and sunlight levels are okay (you can also get them a doggie bed as well), but NEVER give them any way to escape because they can be invasive to a lot of states in the U.S.
They do need a place to hide like a big cave, but they need to be able to move around in it. You can also add substrates such as damp moss for extra humidity
Dirty spots should be cleaned daily along with water. The water dish should be cleaned twice a week to prevent bacteria, but the entire enclosure should be  fully cleaned every 2-3 months along with new substrate
Outdoor homes can be very beneficial to them, but you need to know your location’s climate and make sure it is fully secure
Diet/Feeding Habits:
They are omnivores and are opportunistic eaters, but remember to dust their food with calcium powder every meal, especially hatchlings. Also they need variety and they may be picky about eating veggies, so you may have to hide it in their food
Adults can eat frozen thawed rodents, snails, fruits, lean meat, fish, eggs, and veggies
Hatchlings eat every day, juveniles eat every other day, and adults eat every 3 days
Make sure not to give them fruits all the time as they are treats and can lead to the tegu being overweight
If you want a full list of what they can eat you can visit here as there are a lot of options: https://reptileslounge.com/blogs/blog/a-list-of-best-foods-for-tegus
Babies do eat mostly protein though so feed them mostly meats and insects
Age identification:
They live about 15-20 years average
Physical traits:
Hatchlings are about 7-10 inches in length, but they grow about an inch every month and have a fast growth rate in general
Most adults weigh about 15 pounds
Adults typically reach 3-4 feet total in length and reach full maturity around 3 years old (they sometimes do need to hibernate to reproduce successfully if breeding is planned)
Females can lay up to 25 eggs and they hatch about 92 days later
Types include: argentine black and white, argentine red, argentine blue, yellow, colombian black and white, colombian gold, etc.
Personality:
They are very intelligent and sociable, but do absolutely fine on their own as well.
They bond with their close companions and need handling/time with their owners to be tame and for their comfort
They are very docile and gentle, but they do need to be used to handling otherwise they can get anxious and possibly lash out (gold tegus are also a bit more feisty as a heads up)
Health concerns:
Don’t leave them alone while they are soaking as some can drown pretty easily
Handling/exercise:
Handling is very necessary to tame Tegus and is much easier when hatchlings
When trying to tame them, do not look directly into their eyes and make sudden movements as this frightens them and talk softly
One good method of taming is to take your tegu into a small room, such as the bathroom, and just sit with your pet while letting it roam. It won’t be long before your tegu starts crawling onto you as it gets calmer and perceives no threat from you. Do this regular to promote bonding
As it get older you may be able to put a leash on them and go on walks
Don’t feed them by hand because they will associate your hand with food and may bite

We did ROMWOD afterwards.  Robert (in Deer Valley Utah) would have been proud of us.  Of course, we used his TV and his App, for which we are grateful.  Four of our girls and 2 boys participated.  Everyone was invited.
We are down to 12 total bottles of water.  Fortunately, we have 21 bottles of beer left over from the party for our emergency use.  Please bring water.
Thursday workout at 4 PM.  We are supposed to still be enjoying warm weather....it may be damp.  A Wine tasting follows.  We could make this our own private New Years party.  It’s your party.  There will be Bubbly juice.

Boulder Peak Olympic Triathlon July 11, 2021
The Boulder Peak Triathlon, Duathlon & Aquabike on July 11th is one of the countries longest and most well-known triathlons.  Racers are tackling the infamous “Olde Stage” Hill, boasting an average 15% grade on their way to the finish line!  This race has earned it's spot on more than a couple notable “Best Triathlons in America” lists.  In 2017, the Boulder Peak was listed as one of the top 15 most amazing triathlons in the United States by The Culture Trip!
Tumblr media
I decided that this year was going to be the year that I see how good I can get at triathlons.  I am registered for 5 triathlons.  I have been spending so much time open water swimming since this is the thing about the triathlon that scares me the most.
Tumblr media
I love swimming but swimming in open water is so different.  You deal with waves, dark water, and people kicking and hitting you in the water.  I went to Boulder a few days before my triathlon and did a 1.2 mile swim race.  I panicked for the first half mile but relaxed after that.  I came in 1st in my age group.
Tumblr media
We were supposed to camp in Boulder but Connor got invited to a Birthday sleepover and Camilla wanted to compete in swimming prelims.  So, I decided to take the trip out to Boulder in the morning of the triathlon by myself.
Tumblr media
I was the most comfortable in the water that I have ever been.  My friends convinced me to wear my wetsuit even when the water temp was 76 degrees.  I bought some oil that allowed me to get my wetsuit off quickly.  The wetsuit makes me swim faster as long as it doesn’t take too much time to get it off and get on the bike.
Tumblr media
Everyone is scared in the water at the start.  It makes me feel more comfortable that I am not alone.
Tumblr media
The bike is always my slowest event.  For triathletes, they usually are bicyclists first.  I am a runner and a swimmer.  I have learned to road cycle over the years but I am not sure that I will ever be as fast as those Boulder cyclists.  But, I have a lot of fun.  I am a good climber.  I go fast uphill but I usually get passed on the flat road and downhill. Thankfully, there was a big climb on this course and I charged up “Olde Stage” hill.
Tumblr media
Of course running is my favorite.  I think I passed like 20 people on the run.  I love this part of the triathlon.
Tumblr media
I came in 11th in my age group so I definitely have some work to do, but I am at least in the top half of the field.  This was a huge triathlon with 419 competitors.

Next up is Steamboat Lake Triathlon.  I am so excited!

Camping in Nevada with a Family Nevada is a great place to camp. There are camping sites all over the state that offer different camping experiences: from free camping in Nevada, to camping with amenities such as showers and bathrooms, or camping without amenities. This blog post will help you decide which kind of camping experience is best for your family! If you’re considering camping in Utah we’ve also made a list of the 10 best spots to camp with family in Utah for you here! 1. Beaver Dam State Park Beaver Dam State Park is located 38 miles north of Reno. The camping sites at Beaver Dam are all back-in, meaning your car will be parked behind the camping site and you’ll need to enter through gates that lead directly into it. This camping spot also offers a small group camping area with bathrooms and showers for larger groups. There’s plenty to do in this park! There are two lakes within walking distance from camping spots as well as fishing available on both fresh water (Lake Tahoe) or Lake Mead depending on which side of the highway you camp near. You can also rent kayaks by prior arrangement and hit up some rapids! Beaver Dam State Park is a perfect camping spot for families as it offers camping sites that accommodate up to four cars with a picnic table, fire ring and grill. The camping site is popular in the summer during hot days but also gets occasional visits in winter when people like to enjoy some skiing or snowshoeing on the trails around Beaver Dam Lake. Another plus about this camping spot are its proximity from other attractions such as Reno which is just 38 miles away! You can easily spend an entire day exploring either of these areas before coming back home for a campfire dinner at your campsite. 2.
