Expensive Taste [Extra Drabble]
Your best friend lets you crash at her place over the spring break since you have nowhere else to go. Little did you know that it isn't actually her place. Instead, it belongs to a tall (grumpy) hot guy who finds you in his apartment–her brother
an: I love added detail and I wondered what reader would get up to now she is aware of who’s bedroom she is standing in. If anyone is curious about the watch mentioned, the link to it is here for visual reference.
pairing: Nanami Kento x reader
warnings: none at all
Series Masterlist

“C’mon c’mon,” you muttered to yourself, listening to the incessant ringing in your ear. The line clicked over to voicemail. You cursed loudly, tossing your phone onto the plush bed. A bed that wasn’t yours, not even temporarily.
Your fingers tightened into the fluffy white towel fixed around your chest, a sense of guilt settling in your gut. It was ridiculous. You didn’t know you were in someone’s home. Blowing out a long breath, you spun on the spot. There were details you missed on first entering the room, and finding them now only made you feel foolish.
Set upon the right-hand nightstand was a black leather organiser with an expensive-looking watch displayed next to a retro alarm clock. You padded closer, bending to examine the timepiece without touching it and blinked rapidly as you came face to face with an Omega watch.
Shit, those were expensive.
You didn’t dare to touch the steel links, only admired the yellow-gold detail and navy blue face from a safe distance whilst telling yourself not to pick up your phone and find out just how much money these would set someone back. It wasn’t any of your business. None at all.
Dressing with little care, you hopped around the room to pull your leggings up and caught sight of yourself in the floor-length mirror. What a situation to be in. You couldn’t decide if this was the plot of some rom-com or a horror movie, at this point, it could go either way. Even knowing that your instincts told you to trust him. If he had wanted to cause you harm, then his best opportunity had blown right by.
Suppressing a smile, you remembered how mortified he had looked once the realisation had set in. The look of a man who did not have a clue what to do and that only endeared you to him despite the unsavouriness of the situation.
You fixed your hair into a loose ponytail, thankful that only the ends were wet with your untimely splashing session in the bath, and that’s when you spied the inset doorway to the left of the mirror.
Curiosity killed the cat, or so the saying goes.
Maybe it wasn’t a good quality of yours, this inability to resist temptation, but an open entryway wasn’t snooping, was it? You weren’t rifling through his drawers or looking at anything not openly on display. That was your argument, and you were sticking to it.
“Goddamn…”
For the second time this day, you spun a full 360 in what turned out to be an immaculate walk-in closet. Had you spied this earlier, there would have been no doubt in your mind that this place belonged to a man and a wealthy one at that.
The racks were neatly arranged into categories, with shirts of white, navy, black and grey hung with pristine creases highlighted in the sleeves and the cuffs and collars starched. Another housed trousers with matching jackets in the section next to them. You reached out tentatively, fingertips brushing against the thick expensive fabric. Just how much money did this guy earn?
One thing you noticed was that the area reserved for what you would consider casual attire was remarkably sparse. A few thin-knit sweaters hung with care. A pile of folded t-shirts stacked beneath and one pair of folded light blue denim jeans. Workout shorts and a few Under Armour compression shirts finished your perusal of the more than generous space.
Each item spoke of luxury, of an indulgence in the finer things in life but it did not necessarily strike you as excess. You gathered that everything in here held a purpose, be it to dress to impress at work or get the most from a workout. Nothing seemed like the kind of impulse buys that you were guilty of on the odd occasions you felt flush with money. Whether it was your place or not, it spoke to something within you, and you liked that he was indulgent where it counted.
You didn’t dare to open the drawers beneath, scared to death of what you might find—underwear mostly likely. Instead, you scurried back into the bedroom, terrified that he might return if you took too long.
It would be a lie to deny you were curious about him. He was far from old enough to be Karin’s father, a brother perhaps? You worried your bottom lip with your teeth, eyebrows pinched at the thought you might not know your friend as well as you assumed.
The man had an immaculate taste, but you very much got the impression that he was a workaholic. Even from the brief time you had spent together in the steamy bathroom, the fatigue was evident on his face. He could use a vacation most likely.
With that thought in mind, you went in search of the man in question. Several outcomes were jostling in your brain for attention, and all you hoped was that it wouldn’t end with you out on the streets with nowhere to go.
This Nanami Kento wouldn’t be so heartless, would he?

One small detail I noticed about Dragons Rising is how you can VERY clearly tell who has the more fighting experience between the characters. Plus, the varied fight styles are so interesting, too!
If you ever noticed, Sora rarely ever punches with the golden arm. It's always with her sleeved one-(See her fighting against Imperium Guards for fist fighting and the Howlers/Wolf Warriors for her kicks), and she often kicks more than she punches! Notice how when she tries punching Rapton, he's only really shoved back because her punches aren't strong enough even through the armour?
Arin uses momentum and area objects to strengthen his Spinjitzu. He's actually more of an object fighter than the other Ninja, too. (See his use of weaponry when fighting). He tends to throw himself at oponents, but it doesn't work much.
Wyldfyre is of course the Wyldcard. She's aggressive, she's mean. She fights with everything she has like the Dragons do. She's actually the opposite to Sora- she punches a whole ton.

The Eras Tour | folklore section | Version 2
Alberta Ferretti custom
Well we are certainly in for quite a ride with this tour if Taylor plans to continue to serve fresh versions of her looks. On Night 2 of Glendale, AZ Taylor switched up her goddess gown for her folklore set to this tiered, cream gown. The split sleeve details feel almost capelike, which I love. the flutter cap sleeve also feels simultaneously dainty and armour-like.
I think this could have made a stronger impact in a different colour.

Y'all asked for it. Drawings and explanations under the cut of Legend, Wind, Warrior and Hyrule (just to be clear don't expect anything bc I dunno how to draw really):
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Starting with Legend (top left): The prince ofc. He's 17 in this au, and it's ok to ship him with Marin and Fable. The getup he has on in this drawing, he never wears when he sneaks out but when mostly when he's in the castle. He dyed half his hair. It was supposed to be red but it came out pink instead. He ended up secretly liking the pink though. Although not coloured atm, his outfit is red with the exception of his pants and belt. The little details on the sleeve are gold, his belt is brown. His pants are a creamy brown.
Little facts about him ig:
-Hates feeling vulnerable
-Fears being trapped or losing reality
-was very sickly as a child
-very good at many instruments; he enjoys learning them
-refuses to sing though
-wants to learn how to swordfight
-collector (he also enjoys collecting things)
-born in Castletown, Hyrule
_____________________________________________________________
Wind (top right): He's 14 and has a dark brown eye colour. Lots of freckles. His shirt is a bright green. He likes blue more but his Grandma liked him to wear green, so he wears it to honour her. His pants are a simple brown. His Grandma, passed when he was 12, and his parents had been missing even before that. He now lives with Green, Red, Blue and Vio. Aryll, his sister, lives there as well.
More little facts:
-loves seafood
-picky about other foods
-protective of his younger sister
-Aryll WAS kidnapped before :)
-used to pretend to be a pirate as a kid, still loves reading about them
-loves acting
-optomistic
-chaotic
-hates cold tempatures
-fears the dark, and losing his sister again
-loves bugs
-loves thunder and rain
-born in Outset, Hyrule
_____________________________________________________________
Warrior (bottom left): He's 22. His armour is a uniform, but the scarf was made by his mother before she passed away. The back of his scarf has a signature by her. He rarely parts with it. The uniform was inspired by botw's Hylian knight armour. He's Legend's personal knight, promoted after helping greatly in the war. Armed most of the time.
Little facts:
-Has 5 other sisters
-good with kids
-twins with one of his siblings, Linkle
-was popular among many ladies when he first joined knighthood
-also hates cold enviroments
-fears being hated, or failing
-has a 'soldier' mode where he doesn't show his emotions and is very calculative and serious
-born in Castletown, Hyrule
___________________________________________________________
Hyrule: He's 16. It's ok to ship him with Dawn. His clothes were made by Blue, they're a darker green. Messy hair, never takes care of it. (even if he needs to) and gold outlines on his clothes. He's a great friend of Legend's, meeting him a year ago.
Little facts:
-timid around strangers
-had an older brother but he ran away awhile ago
-very good at survival
-has magic abilities that he discovers later in the story
-looks up to Legend
-kinda skittish and jumpy
-bashful
-self-worth issues
-born in Selina of Calatia

Appearances for the GG rivals au character.
I am no artist, so these will simply be written descriptions with a few images thrown in here and there. These are all subject to change at any time, as well, since this is still in its early planning stages.
For Gem, I imagine she looks a lot like in this gorgeous fanart, except her dress has slits up the side to allow for easier movement and her hair is a low bun with a braid wrapping around the front of her head, like this.
Scott and Impulse wear armour similar to how applestruda draws it in her au, with their cloths in shades of teal and yellow. Scott, I like to imagine, has long, back length hair, that he wears down and covering one eye. Impulse has shortly cropped hair and two little nubby horns that are tipped in black, as well as sharp clawed hands. Scott's teeth are sharp; no one quite knows why.
Grian's eyes are entirely black like a barn owl's and his hands end in sharp talons rather than nails. He doesn't have wings, not anymore at least. He wears a high collared red tunic and brown trousers, but both are rarely seen past the heavy, ankle length, black cloak he hides himself under, which is held closed by a silver brooch in the shape of an eye. The cloak has a hood but he never wears it. He always seems to be sliming, whether that smile is devious or genuine is up for debate. The brooch looks something like this, minus the blue center and the circlular details
Scar wears a similar black cloak, held closed by the same brooch, though he wears his with the hood up, and it has red flower detailing on the hem (so, similiar to his secret life look but its a full cloak). His eyes are still green, though, and he has a single grey streak in his brown hair. His tunic and trousers under the cloak are both black and he wears his shirt just a little bit too open at the top. He also always wears a smile, but pretty much everyone can agree it is deceptively kind.
Mumbo and Etho wear matching outfits, claiming it is professional since they share a job, but it is something they choose to do not something that is required of them (they are just silly, really). I imagine they are simple outfits consisting of white tunics with black trousers and thick, leather aprons on top (mumbo's is red and etho's is green). They both wear goggles and thick gloves, as well as chunky boots, all for safety since they work with explosives. Etho wears a black bandana on his lower his face. His goggles replace his headband in this look, being what keeps his hair out of his face. His scared eye is missing entirely; he does not have a false eye, it is just an empty socket. Mumbo wears his goggles around his neck when they are not on his face.
Bdubs dresses similarly, minus the apron and goggles, since he works out in the garder. His shirt is white, and he has brown trousers. Over that he wears a thick cloak that is almost always covered in some manner of flora and/or mud. He completes the look with a wide brimmed hat to protect him from the sun.
Cleo is also dresses similarly to Etho and Mumbo but her apron is a plain brown that is stained with soot. Her tunic sleeves are always rolled up to show off her strong arms and she doesn't wear her safety gloves nearly as much as she should, and she forgoes eye protection entirely. One of her eyes is missing (surprisingly not related to the lack of protective wear), replaced with a glass eye of a slightly different shade of green than her organic eye. Her hair is pulled into a much messier bun than Gem's, with frizzy stray hairs going every direction.
Ren and Martyn look like how they are typically drawn in third life fanart. Ren's eyes are red, as well as blood shot, and he almost always appears angry.
Pearl wears a white tunic with flared sleeves tucked into a pair of high waisted black trousers. Over this she has a deep, red cloak that stops at her waist. She has a crescent moon shaped birth mark on the left side of her face. She carries a sword around her waist. Her hair is always down and messy under her hood.
Bigb just looks like a baker, I am not sure how to describe it. But he always seems to have flour stains on his clothes no matter how hard he tries to wipe it off. Big strong arms for him as well.
Skizz wears the same armour as Scott and impulse, and his underclothes are black. The sleeves of his tunic are ripped off and he does not wear his gauntlets. He refuses to elaborate on why. He is a dove avian.
Tango wears a short sleeved red tunic and black trousers with big chunky boots. His hands are clawed, and his ears are pointed; both are tipped in a red to black gradient. His eyes are entirely red. He has a long tail that ends in a tuff of fire that doesn't seem to have any real heat.
Jimmy wears a blue tunic with a brown vest over it. Brown trousers and chunky boots. His sleeves are always rolled up and he is always covered in some manner of dirt, both because of the work he does on the farm, and from being very clumsy. He has bull horns, one of which is chipped. He also has a tail.
I still don't have set roles for joel and lizzie just yet so they do not have designs in mind either, unfortunately.

NAK GEAR REFERENCES (+ ADDITIONAL INFO)
🦐 Creator Note: When I designed Nak, I took into account that Activision often used actual gear for their operators, in turn I did the same :D
The Components Beforehand
Tumblr media
PLATE CARRIER
VISM Discreet Plate Carrier by NcSTAR
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This specific plate carrier is simplistic, I felt that if her gear looked too detail heavy it would be difficult to draw, plus make her design look clustered
CHEST RIG
Barska VX-400 Tactical Chest Rig
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I chose this one because of the ridges on the straps! They remind me of scales so they fit with her Serpent look :D
ARM STRAPS
T3 Tactical Armband
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are put usually on the forearms! Nak uses them for her upper arms though. One arm is for maps, one arm is for Indentification like her blood type, occupation, handler info etc.
CLOTHING
Propper CWU 27/P Nomex Flight Suit
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nak wears a flight suit for comfort! Hidden pockets are also a big plus. I felt that if she wore a flight suit, it would be a good way for me to stay consistent with her design since it's very reliable!
HOLSTER
Rothco Deluxe Leg Strap Adjustable Tactical Holster
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the occasion Nak doesn’t have access to the FN SCAR (her baby) she uses a Glock 19X, being the type to prefer heavy or “luxury” weapons
GLOVES
Giro LA DND Biker Gloves
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They have reinforced fingertips! So she’s able to use touchscreen items :3
KNEEPADS
Blackhawk Advanced Tactical Knee Pads V2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of her upbringing, Nak’s Legs are the strongest parts of her body, so she takes extra caution in making sure nothing happens to them!
FOOTWEAR
Rothco G.I. Type Sierra Sole Tactical Boots
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She chose these because she thinks they’re stylish “Aren’t they cute?”
UNDER ARMOUR
in order; VISM Strike Face Ballistic Plate, DAS Leben Protective Arm Sleeves Guard Bracer, KEZZELED Welding Neck Protector
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Because of her learned paranoid personality, she wears arm guards and a neck protector under her flight suit as a precaution. The ballistic plate comes with her plate carrier :)
CUSTOMIZATION
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her bandana is just a green cloth she bleached to make a snake pattern. Being in Chimera, a lot of the operators have patches of their unit! Nak usually puts hers on her holster, but it’s bound to move around on her gear. The serpent fangs markings on her plate carrier are in reference to Naga, a custom Patch that’s removable as well :3

Lady of Sorrows guide us
Twitter / X | Instagram | Bsky | Speed Paintings
[Image Description]
A digital realism portrait painting of Shadowheart from Baldur's Gate 3. Shadowheart is painted from the bust up, she is wearing a black dress with gold armour detailing on the bust, the sleeves drape off her shoulders delicately, held up but thin gold straps. She wears a gold chained necklace with a large gold pendant, with a large circular black stone in it. Her black hair is tied up into a thick plate that is decorated with chains, and she wears a silver head-dress at the top of her ponytail, bangs frame her face. She wears a soft expression, with a hint of sadness in her green eyes. She has glowing star freckles and a scar across her nose that spreads across under her right eye. In the background a large crescent moon, like gold foil glows, lighting up parts of her skin, over a deep blue background that's been peppered with yellow stars. In the foreground some gold glowing orbs float around her.

King and his mother?!
In Christ's College Chapel, Cambridge is 16th century stained glass window, a rare example which survived nearly intact. It is thought to be done in 1505. On left is Henry VII. And the woman on right is Margaret Beaufort. In the most unexpected outfit.
Tumblr media
Read further for more.
In middle is St. Edward the Confessor,
Tumblr media
on left King Henry VII wearing his armour and crown, already grey-haired.
Tumblr media
i just love the silvery part of his armour and also these portculises.
Green behind him probably has to do with tudor colours-green and white.
But it is the female figure on right which caught my attention. It is said to be lady Margaret Beaufort, who was very involved with Christ's College in 1505. Hence it is very logical to asume it is her.
Tumblr media
However if you play with image a little bit to see the woman's outfit a bit better...you will realise woman is dressed extremely sumptuarily.
Tumblr media
The cloak is held in place by white rope ended by tasle-standard design for female cloak of the time. But this vivid blue colour could be one of blues made using snails as dye...very expensive, on par with purple. The pillow beneath her feet is in same colour, cloth before hr crimson-also very expensive.
So what is the golden part? Her gown+wide sleeves of that gown.
Her headwear seems to be plain black, but otherwise it is pure sumptuousness...not at all what we would expect lady Margaret to wear.
Thus i questioned whetever or not it might be Elizabeth of York instead, however i doubt it because of the shape of coronet. It doesnt match Henry's crown and we have depictions of CoA in crown matching her husbands. Plus these wide sleeves are more consistent with 1510s, they wouldnt become part of English fashion until at least mid 1500s, after Elizabeth died. (As far as i know.)
But then Margaret and the college were in 1505, so it makes sense.
Yet I always imagined that her simple outfit we know from portraits had something to do with her swearung celibacy in 1499.
Can somebody please check records of her wardrobe? Because this is way after and she is depicted truly lavishly. But you know-she got her son on throne after years of struggles and worries. Which one of us wouldn't then want to enjoy her golden years?
You know we had similiar thing with Margaret of Austria. She had so many portraits of herself in simple outfit, looking like true mourning widow and didnt want to remarry after two dead husbands. So people mistakenly think that is all she wore all the time, even though it was not so.
Unfortunately the image is also bit dirty and scratched or worn of in places. I imagine that originally it looked more like this:
Tumblr media
I know that at the very top we have lines consisting with white chemise, then black line which could be black kirtle, then line of large pearls(maybe ment to sit on edge of black kirtle) then golden line is probably edge of golden gown...but right under it imo is edge of ermine surcoat.
Tumblr media
Which obviously would not be showing over lower parts of golden gown.But normally there is no band running across in middle of the chest-imo that is damage.
Then obviously her blue cloak is held in place by pieces of white rope(typical of the time)-ending in tassel.
That is how i interpret it and this is the best version i could come up with:
Tumblr media
One more thing. I do not know which one of these is correct:
Tumblr media
With or without u-band.
U-band on forehead occurs in gable hoods of 15th century. After 1505, the vast major women would long since have abandoned it. Like a decade prior.
Yet she was over 60, so i cannot rule out that granny who nobody would have dared to criticized-because she was mother of the king- would have gone around in something way out of fashion.
But then...she has no visible paste and that is consistent with 15th century too. Yet the gown is strongly against it.
So this is bit of contradiction, based upon just this small detail.
Tumblr media
But who knows, maybe it is simply dirty in the most unfortunate of the spots and conicidently looks more like u-band, while it might be bit of hair showing.
I hope you have enjoyed this and tell me what you think.

Roméo et Juliette: de la Haine à l'Amour - Redesign - 2024
To understand my completely unnecessary desire to redesign a musical that is over twenty years old, you have to understand that Romeo et Juliette is my Roman Empire. Long explanation under the break.
I wanted this design to be an homage in the silliest way possible.
I really leant into the sensibilities of original costume designer Dominique Borg, who used contemporary colour and technique and applied it to historical (or pseudo-historical) silhouettes.
Broadly, I wanted the Montagues to feel English in their shapes--Elizabethan doublets, high necklines, and ruffs, in homage to Shakespeare and the source text. They're all leather, denim, silver hardware--a little bit punk with status.
The Capulets would be deeply Italian Renaissance in their silhouettes, in reference to the setting of the play. They're all velvets, lace, chiffon, satins, and gold hardware--giving them an airiness of the Mediterranean while still allowing some drape here and there.
I wanted each family to have a slightly more broad palette than most versions afford them--which is why the Montagues have a smattering of green and magenta while the Capulets play with some soft yellows and lavenders.
The ball scene is largely Arthurian in inspiration--just because I took the idea of "what would the 1500s consider vintage and costume-y in the same way we think of the Victorian era" and ran away with it. There's also some silly Y2K nonsense because I rewatched the "On dit dans la rue" music video and thought "What if the Capulets threw this big Arthurian affair with full elegance and the Montagues cobbled together some gay club outfits circa 1998 fits out of a suit of armour."
FINALLY, I wanted Roméo and Juliette to take on elements of each other's family's style and colours for the end of the play--because to be loved is to be changed.
So here is a breakdown of my choices for each of the looks.
Un Jour: Here we see Roméo in his base look. It's a two-tone patent leather double with multiple zipper details. The peplum is criss-crossed zippers. The wings over the shoulder seams are edged with zipper teeth. The ruff detail at the neckline is also edged with zipper teeth. He has along zipper across the front of his boot like he's trying to be the next Sailor Moon. I don't know y'all. I went a little feral with trying to figure out all the places I could put zippers in.
Juliette is the most juvenile looking in Un Jour. I imagine that in this scene, she's being dressed by her family instead of her own volition.
She's in an asymmetrical, empire-waisted gown that is likely a brocaded or printed silk. Her chemise is a sheer lavender georgette or chiffon that peaks through the lacing at the shoulders and along the upper arms. She has a velvet choker and velvet belt and a heavily stoned velvet headband. Her hairstyling (it would have to be a wig, it would be NUTS to not make this a wig) is an homage to the open-weave Juliet caps that were similar to nets worn in the period on hair. Italy was, fun fact, one of the few countries where women didn't cover their hair during the renaissance.
L'amour heureux: As I explained above, Roméo's outfit is so silly. The wrap around glasses. The one arm of armour. The sheer, stoned period shirt. The gold brocade on the trousers. The pearl earring. The many, unnecessary belts. Bless this mess. It's also a cheeky little nod to Baz Lurhmann's Romeo + Juliet.
Juliette is, ostensibly, cosplaying as Guinevere or Lady Macbeth or Ophelia or any number of Middle Ages women. The ball is the Capulet's opportunity to really sell their daughter as marriage material so I wanted the look to feel bridal, hence the veil. I wanted to give reference to exaggerated surcote sleeves without actually doing them, hence the sleeve-into-glove and bow detailing with trails down to the floor. There is also a hint of yellow chemise underneath, which is actually just her Le balcon look underdressed for ease of the quick change (yes, I did think about this.) The dress is velvet with one panel of lace in-set into the underskirt. The bows are satin-face organza.
Le balcon: Romeo would change into his base again (during Le Poète). Juliette is in a simple yet totally impractical sheer chemise + slip combo. I wanted this soft yellow for this sequence because I always think about the lines "O she doth teach the torches to burn bright!" and "But soft! What light through yonder window breaks?/It is the east and Juliet is the sun" when it comes to describing her. The chemise would likely be a chiffon, while the slip would be silk.
Aimer: I say this with my whole chest--I hate how they changed the palette for Aimer in the 2010 production. I want my lovers soft and angelic and matching in this moment of union. Here we see a bit more of Romeo's lace shirt--his sleeves are laced like Juliette's in the first look. His doublet, trouser, boot combo are off-white leather in homage to the original production. Juliette's dress has a similar train length to her ball look (again, bridal) and we see the neckline creep up into a ruff (Elizabethan, rather than Italian). Lots of sheer net and lace with cream bridal satin as a skirt. Tiered sleeves. A little circlet on her head.
Le poison: Honestly? Just wanted her to have another outfit change before her death dress as a transitional choice. There's so much more of the purple in this look because it's going to take us into the blue elements of the final dress.
La mort de Roméo/Juliette: Again. To be loved is to be changed. Juliette has a dropped waistline, a high neckline and ruff, and a heart shaped cut-out detail (see: boob window). She's straight up in blue, and all the sweet and soft pinks of her youth are gone. Romeo has lost his high neckline, ruff, wins, and peplum in favour of a shorter Italian silhouette. He's asymmetrical (a call-back to Juliette's asymmetry) and all the edging detail is done in red. Mantua as a setting is patchworked, torn, and dirty, so I imagine the doublet is pieced together from scraps of jersey (so it's drippy and sad and hangs off him in a lovely manner).

and the Unrelenting
Character Design of The Dark Queen of Mortholme, Pt. 2
Tumblr media
(Pt. 1)
With the story playing out from the point of view of their opponent, the Hero is characterised mainly through the mystery they present to the Queen. They're unassuming, yet determined to go further than the Queen could ever imagine. Humble in a way she might view as lowliness, but they try to prove holds the key to remaining open to improvement. They might not be powerful, efficient or elegant—not next to the Queen, at any rate—but they for sure are resilient.
The first priority was for them to look tiny in comparison to the Queen; it shouldn't come as a surprise how little damage to the Queen they do per hit. Not weak, but certainly overpowered. More stocky and short, like all of their considerable willpower has been crammed into a compact package. A lot of the exaggerated proportions like the poofy trousers, big head and little hands and feet are to make them a bit cute and goofy. This is not a hardened adventurer, this is someone who's trying their best.
At the start I had some sketches with an uncovered head to contrast with the Queen's helmeted one, maybe to have a long ponytail to give the Hero's movements a nice flowy follow-through. That's before I decided to characterise them as a mystery, however, and all the subsequent designs got a hood to hide their face.
I even considered a whole cape, but it was too much. They're not actively hiding themselves; it's only the Queen who has difficulty comprehending their nature. Next to her decked head to toe in plate armour, the Hero should come off as someone comfortable being more vulnerable. Maybe they're a bit of a dumbass, maybe they're boldened by the knowledge that even if they get hurt, it won't stop them for long.
Thus, practical if rather unintimidatingly floppy-sleeved chainmail it was. They get a sword, because they're meant to evoke the most typical fantasy protagonist possible. Our interest with this character isn't in the character per se, but in the player-like will behind the avatar, so an overcomplicated design would only serve as a distraction. The only extra detail they get are the belts to suggest resourcefulness.
It's implied that between their attempts at the boss, they have whole little RPG adventures outside of the boss room that the player is locked in. The Queen doesn't get to participate in any of it, so we know nothing about this part of them. Yet we see the results as they with their new abilities, tools, perhaps dialogue hinting at their emotional attachment to some storylines that motivate them to push through. Design-wise, I thought I'd like to depict their updating toolkit not only through their animations, but through an evolution of their sprite: a shield appears in their off hand, a bow on their back, potions on their belt. (It's possible this will be cut content due to the effort of making multiple versions of every single sprite sheet, but who knows. I have poor impulse control.)
The palette, unsurprisingly, is mellow grays and warm hues to oppose the Queen's starkness and cold. Gotta use the clichés when they work! I didn't want the Hero's main colour to be too bright a red, though. It was picked (from the few potential options that would stand out from the blue-dominated background) to represent their fierce determination, but in her own way the Queen is determined, too. It's the Hero's stubbornness to improve, their malleability, which distinguishes them. So they wear a softer, earthier red.

Vengeance, Victory, and Undying Love - pt 4
Chapter 4 of my Supercorp fic in which Lena still creates something called Non Nocere to deal with her broken heart after finding out Supergirl's identity, but this time she gives the name to a different project. A more personal one. And now she’s coming for Supergirl.
This and previous chapters also available to read on Ao3
........................
The sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon when Lena finally left the DEO building, her head held high. The long sleeves of her jacket hid the spots on her wrists that had been rubbed raw by the slightly too tight cuffs, and she was almost certain that there was no discernible wobble in her stride, despite the weak feeling in her knees after her confrontation with Alex.
True, she had anticipated something of the sort when she had decided to keep them in the dark about what she had injected Kara with, but somehow knowing it might happen and being confronted with the reality of her former friend’s wrath felt entirely different, and Lena hated to admit how shaken she was by it, even to herself.
Still, it didn’t matter in the end. It was just another small feeling to stuff down into another small box at the back of her mind. The main thing was that she had made it through the second part of her plan, she was confident the DEO wouldn’t undo her work in time, and Non Nocere was still on track. It was time to pull herself together and refocus her mind on her goal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back at her desk a few hours later, having snatched a little sleep and a vile smoothie that nevertheless contained enough nutrients to ensure she wouldn’t have to think about meals for a while, Lena fell once again into the activity that was beginning to consume every waking hour that wasn’t already spent on running L Corp or working directly on Non Nocere.
‘Run the simulation’.
Kara stands in front of her, smiling that particular smile she seems to save for Lena alone. For a moment Lena allows herself to pause, taking in the soft waves of blonde that caress Kara’s toned shoulders, the way her eyes crinkle a little as her smile widens, the tilt of her head and set of her jaw. Every tiny detail that makes up the physicality of Kara Danvers.
Then she winds up, kryptonite ring flashing in the sunlight before she punches the smile off her stupid adorable face. Kara crumples at her feet and does not get back up.
‘Another’.
Kara flies out to face an alien a hundred times her size armoured with kryptonite. At first she is winning, beating her opponent down with a flurry of attacks, but even as she fights, sickly green begins painting jagged lightning bolts across her face and hands as the kryptonite takes effect. Kara struggles to stay airborne, her heat vision sputtering and then failing altogether as she begins to lose altitude. The alien sees its chance and attacks, snapping her spine in a single blow and discarding her as casually as a broken doll.
‘Another’.
Kara gets hit by a truck.
‘Another’.
Kara gets shot. Stabbed. Caught in a land slide. Blown apart by a bomb.
Kara lying bloody and broken at the bottom of a crater. Kara looking up at her in despair as the life drains from her eyes. Kara still and cold, never to rise again.
It’s sharp and stinging, and it keeps Lena focused on what she needs to do.
‘Again Ms Luthor?’
Lena sighed and waved away the latest image.
‘No thank you Hope, that’s enough for now. We have work to do’.
‘Alright Ms Luthor. What would you like to do next?’
‘We’re going end this for good, Hope. We’re going to make some kryptonite’.
Historically ever after part 5
Darling Charming 2 New And Improved!
I wanted to do an updated version of this post because, it was really just my second attempt at doing something like this so it's not really the best and I've learned quite a bit more about 18th century fashion since then and I'm not really satisfied with that post anymore. Darling was the fist character that I decided to make these posts on because everybody kind of knows that her design was 18th century inspired. I think that it's just one of the recognisable historical styles .
Tumblr media
Starting with the dress, it has an open front showing another layer underneath like most styles of dresses from the Georgian period which usually had a petticoat underneath as well as a matching stomacher if one was worn. The robe robe a la francaise is, I think the most iconic for this look. The robe a la francaise also featured large box pleats at the back and were commonly worn over side hoops which gave the iconic wide hip look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1 2
I think that darlings dress more closely resembles an English gown or robe a l’anglaise which is more fitted and less often worn with side hops therefore usually having a more round skirt shape.
Tumblr media
Either way it doesn't really matter as I doubt that the people designing these outfits really had this in mind. But I'll leave this article by the American Duchess which dose a good job explaining the different styles of 18th century gowns if you're interested.
We also have those lovely elbow length frilled sleeves which were common on fashionable gowns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The print on her dress really resembles some of the floral patterns common during this period, such as these ones I found in the Met's online collections.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
1 2 3
the underlayer's pattern is more subtle and and resembles these silk woven fabrics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Her hair is swept back and curled in a way that's meant to reference the large fancy hair styles iconic to the period, mostly around the mid 18th century. Feathers, ribbons and jewellery were all pretty common hair pieces.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her hair is also verry light which is again a reference to white powdered hair.
Tumblr media
While were talking about hair I'd also like to mention that we plenty of primary sources indicating the use of blue and pink hair powder during this time. I don't know a lot about that (or just historical hair in general I'm trying my best), but Abbey Cox did a great video the history of coloured hair, and after watching that I was able to find portraits showing it. It's such a niche fun fact that I don't think that it was intentional and they probably just chose blue to go with the colour scheme they already had but it's still cool.
Tumblr media
Her jewellery was interesting to look into, full disclosure I don't know much about jewellery outside of the Victorian era and even then my knowledge is pretty limited so I was mainly digging through the V&A archives and comparing them.
Her necklaces are I think the most similar. You got the jewels arranged in a circle around another jewel and the elaborate patterns.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
1 2
I think her bracelet is more armour inspired I'm not really able to get a good enough look at it to notice much detail.
dangly earrings sort of like hers I've seen a lot of but rather different.
Tumblr media
With her flower shaped ring I was either expecting to either find nothing or something similar but smaller which they made more bulky for doll production. I didn't find a similar ring, most were verry simple in shape, but I did find this broch and gasped verry loudly when I did because it was so similar.
Tumblr media
I might do another one on her dragon games outfit, but I don't really think there's anything there, and this post is getting long, nothing compared with what I have in the works for Lizzie but... I have homework to do and this has already taken up enough of my time.
As always, feel free to add on or correct me.
The hunting dress. This appears repeatedly, in-between periods of wearing other things. Its first appearance is in Episode 6. It's a glorious teal-green velvet with heavy gold embroidery and beadwork, and we see it full-length as Danyin barges in downstairs.
Tumblr media
He wears this when he's out to fuck shit up, but not as, like, a formal public occasion. It has straight, relatively practical sleeves, and no train. It's worn in the forest for the Fairy Exam shenanigans, (looking exactly like the Evil Penguin from The Wrong Trousers, but that's the peformance, not the costume. Magic invisibility seems to work just as well as the Penguin's famous disguise) ...
Tumblr media
He also wears it in Episode 10, for the first confrontation with Xunfeng:
Tumblr media
it's being worn when they swap bodies, and it continues to be worn by Xiao Lanhua throughout a lot of the body swap scenes, interspersed with other things
Tumblr media
Xiao Lanhua seems to find it relatively tolerable, if awkward and uncomfortable to wear.
It's also being worn when they switch back, so immediately to (informally) fuck up Changheng and Rong Hao, followed by Xunfeng.
Tumblr media
He wears it again to hunt down the kidnapper in Episode 15. Here, it's an interlude and a change of look in the middle of something else, which I'll come back to later.
Tumblr media
The texture is a little velvety, but the structure is stiff and complex, with lots of bits. The strange sinuous things around the shoulders and neck are reminiscent of his armour. The embroidery glitters at the hips.
From the floor, we briefly get detail of the skirts. What is going on with that thin line of teal-blue velvet ribbon? Where is it even coming from? So much detail.
Tumblr media
Maybe it's connected to what might be a middle layer of blue gauze. The more closely I look, the more this outfit looks incredibly fiddly and complicated, more so than any of his more ostentatious outfits.
Tumblr media
But then they go to the hunting lodge, and suddenly it looks at home. Green, gold, velvety, complex, organic, and now all the squiggles and unexplained layers are roots, branches, leaves (and, as usual, flames).
Tumblr media
The headpiece is very organic-looking, strongly asymmetrical - it looks like a present from an Ent.
Tumblr media
All the colours and shapes blend in now, with a suggestion of rough, primal power, at home in the forest. Suddenly it seems almost as though we are seeing him in his real home.
So it is still with us for the conversation with the elder woman in the forest, where its compact shape seems appropriate.
Tumblr media
He also wears it to enter the human realm with the intention of fucking shit up, in Episode 19, until he changes it to blend in.
Tumblr media
I had the impression by this point that this was supposed to be the outfit the character internally feels most comfortable and at home in: he wears it when the priority is doing, rather than being seen to do.
Given that, I found it striking that he wears it here in Episode 28, to come and find Xiao Lanhua, who has waited all night outside his door. We have a moment to wonder why he is wearing it now.
Tumblr media
In episode 15 and 16 this outfit was worn for an interlude of action in the middle of the process of restoration. Here, it's worn for an interlude of different action in the middle of the process of consequences.
We get to see that the skirt of the underlayer is a bonkers silver leopard print, of all things (and also that the thing he's covered her with is the outer layer of the Chrysalis Gown).
Tumblr media
She asks him if he is all right, and he says a wordless "no". And then we discover what he is on the hunt for - he's worn this to propose! This is the only time we can really see that it has a sleeveless, shiny over-layer that seems to be suspended from those strange sinuous things that wrap around the shoulders.
Tumblr media
Of course, the situation immediately spirals out of his control again, but in a good way:
Tumblr media
After this, I could be wrong, but I don't think we see the hunting dress again.
There is so much going on for this relatively compact outfit. It starts out signifying practical physical action and personalised one-on-many violence. It then blends in with nature to suggest a sort of primal sincerity (potentially not just in attacking things). Then it ends up here. I think that's beautiful.
The DFQC costumes master post is here.
Shoutout to the costume designers for telling Rhaenys’s emotional journey in clothes.
Honestly, I love the Great Council look because (as Paddy would say) it’s serving Targaryen realness. She’s in deep red and black, the truest form of her house colours as well as having a dragon sigel literally in her hair. Compared to Viserys and Aemma who wear maroon (?) and pink respectively, giving us a visual clue that not only was her claim stronger, but she would have likely been the stronger leader. She even has flipping wings for sleeves. The details, man.
Tumblr media
Then when we see her again, she’s in Velaryon colours and it’s pale blue. Ice blue. She’s retreated so far away from the colour palette of the Targaryens and found solace in her new house. She’s showing her loyalties but also steering away of any reminder of her past heritage, and more specifically: her past claim to the Iron Throne, despite her being nicknamed “The Queen Who Never Was”. It’s a retreat, allowing her to observe the court as unnoticed as she can - speaking to her lack of role, as well as a symbol of pride as all of the gowns are blinged to high-heaven and she is proud of her Velaryon home and house and chooses to show fealty and loyalty to that, which isn’t a requirement of married women, as we clearly see from Alicent’s own fashion journey back into her Hightower greens.
Tumblr media
Her dragon-riding outfit (at least we assume it’s a dragon-riding outfit), has scales in the fabric of the blouse and the neckline is simple and kimono-like, evoking the dragonkeepers outfits just as much as Daemon and Rhaenyra’s wedding outfits did. But we keep the gold of the Velaryon that is shown through detailing in previous outfits, and then in full force (as a show of wealth) at the wedding banquet.
Tumblr media
Interestingly, over the season, the blues of her dresses get darker and deeper. She remains in blue even in mourning, rather than a perhaps more typical black. But from ice blue, to a royal blue, to a deep navy, she gets darker and darker as events take their toll. The first time we see her in black again is when she has to go to King’s Landing over the Driftmark succession, after previously seeing her in a navy blue dress. As the Dance gets closer, and the time comes where she has to make her choice to go into conflict and pick Rhaenyra’s side and fight for her grandchildren.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then she’s in black for the remainder of the series. I could wax lyrical about that black doublet outfit. The fabrics, the similarities to other outfits we’ve seen, the buckles and the detailing. And her armour is bright red and it has SCALES. She’s a Targaryen once again. She’s a dragon-rider, and her outfits are making sure everybody knows it.
It’ll be fascinating to see what the next costume team decide to do for all of the characters, but I’m mainly excited for Rhaenys. Will she ever wear a dress again? Will she get a new set of armour? Will she stick to blacks and red? Will she coordinate with her husband, or clash, or just compliment?
UPDATED appearances for the GG rivals au characters: now with Lizzie and Joel!!
Once again, i am no artist so they are just written descriptions with pictures here and there. Most of them are largely the same as the previous post, but I have added little tidbits to certain descriptions, some of which are lore related!
Gem looks similar to this gorgeous fanart, except her dress has slits up the side to allow for easier movement. This look is sometimes replaced entirely by a trouser and tunic combo of the same colour if she knows the mission she is being sent on will need a great deal of movement in close quarters or something to that affect. No matter the outfit, her sword never leaves her waist. Her hair is in a low bun with a braid wrapping around the front of her head, like this. I do not imagine her with horns in this au.
Scott and Impulse wear armour similar to how applestruda draws it in her au, with their cloths in shades of teal and yellow respectively. Scott has long, back length hair, that he wears down and covering one eye. He was born with heterochromatic eyes, one blue and one hazel. His teeth are sharp, and he has fin-like ears due to his Coral Crest heritage. Impulse has shortly cropped hair, stubble on his face, and two little nubby horns that are tipped in black extending out of his forehead. He also has sharp, clawed hands.
Grian's eyes are entirely black like a barn owl's, and he has feathers on the high parts of his cheek bones and ears. His hands end in sharp talons rather than nails. He also has bird-like legs and taloned feet. His wings are not visible, if there at all. He wears a red shawl/cloak that has a high collar and ends around his waist, held closed by a brooch in the shape of an eye, similar to this but golden instead of silver. It has a hood, but he only wears it if he is trying not to be seen. His undershirt is black, and it is a long sleeve. His trousers are brown.
Scar wears a similar black cloak as Grian, held closed by the same brooch, though he wears his with the hood up. The cloak has red flower detailing on the hem. His eyes are green, and his hair is brown. He has a single grey streak in the front of his bangs. His tunic and trousers under the cloak are both black and he wears his shirt just a little bit too open at the top. He also always wears a smile, but pretty much everyone can agree it is deceptively kind and fake. He looks the most human out of the whole cast, so much so that it is entirely uncanny. EDIT: I can't believe I forgot to mention! Scar has a cane as well. It's wooden with a gold handle.
Mumbo and Etho wear matching outfits, claiming it is professional since they share a job and shop, but it is something they choose to do, not something that is required of them (they are just very, very silly). They are simple outfits consisting of white tunics with black trousers and thick, leather aprons on top (mumbo's is red and etho's is a dark green). They both wear goggles and thick gloves, as well as chunky boots, all for safety since they work with explosives very often. Etho wears a black bandana to cover his lower his face, both to hide his scars and his identity. His goggles replace his headband in this look, doubling as what keeps his hair out of his face. His scared eye is missing entirely; he does not have a false eye, it is just an empty socket. Mumbo wears his goggles around his neck when they are not on his face.
Bdubs also wears thick gloves to protect his hands in the garden. His shirt is white, and he has brown trousers that are a tad bit high watered, something he claims is intentional as he does not want mud all over his trousers. The previous argument becomes moot, because over this outfit he wears a thick cloak that is almost always covered in some manner of flora and/or mud. He completes the look with a wide brimmed hat to protect him from the sun.
Cleo is also dressed similarly to Etho and Mumbo but her apron is a plain brown that is stained with soot. Her tunic sleeves are always rolled up to show off her strong arms and she doesn't wear her safety gloves nearly as much as she should. She forgoes eye protection entirely. One of her eyes is missing, replaced with a glass eye of a slightly different shade of green than her organic eye. Her hair is pulled into a much messier bun than Gem's, with frizzy stray hairs going every direction. She is NOT a zombie in this au, she is completely human.
Ren is dressed in all the typical regalia of a king, complete with a diamond encrusted, golden crown and a thick red cape with a fluffy collar. His thick beard is long and braided. His eyes are red, as well as blood shot, and he almost always appears angry. He, of course, has wolf ears and a tail. He simply would not be Rendog without them.
Martyn is dressed in the same armour as the other knights. His under clothing is green, as is the bandana he wears around his forehead. He usually appears worried, but he smiles often in the presence of the king. He always has a hand on the sheath of his sword, ready to draw it at any time.
Pearl wears a white tunic with flared sleeves tucked into a pair of high waisted black trousers. Over this she has a deep, red cloak that stops at her waist and is held closed by a circular broch that, when unclasped, takes the shape of crescent and wanning gibbous moons. She has a crescent moon shaped birth mark on the left side of her face. Her hair is always down and messy under her hood. When she is on the job, she carries a scythe strapped to her back, along with a crossbow. There is a sheath on her leg which contains a dagger.
Bigb wears a blue tunic with brown trousers, along with a thin white apron when he is working. He always seems to have flour stains on his clothes whether he is on or off the clock, no matter how hard he tries to wipe it off. Big strong arms for him as well.
Skizz wears the same armour as the rest of the knights, and his underclothes are black. The shoulder of his armour has a cross emblem on it that delegates him as a medic, and he has medical supplies carried across his chest. The sleeves of his tunic are ripped off and he does not wear his gauntlets, showing off a plethora of scars along his arms. He is a dove avian, but one of his wings is heavily damaged and half missing as a result of an old injury he sustained on the field. He has white feathers on his upper cheekbones and ears, but he lacks the talons that Grian has.
Tango wears a short sleeved red tunic and black trousers with big chunky boots that are never free of mud. His hands are clawed, and his ears are pointed; both are tipped in a red to black gradient. His eyes are entirely red. He has a long tail that ends in a tuff of fire that doesn't seem to actually have any real heat.
Jimmy wears a blue tunic with a brown vest over it. Brown trousers and chunky boots. His sleeves are always rolled up and he is always covered in some manner of dirt, both because of the work he does on the farm, and from being very clumsy. He has bull horns, one of which is chipped. He also has a tail and bull-like ears. He has a gold ring in one of his ears.
Lizzie wears a flowy purplish-pink dress that is thin, both to allow for free movement and to allow airflow in the Coral Crest heat. Her teeth are sharp, and her ears are fin-like. Her nails are very sharp. She wears her pink hair down with a string of pearls like this. She wears many silver and gold bracelets on both wrists, along with a few anklets on both ankles. She does not wear shoes unless she is out of the castle.
Joel Wears a thin, short sleeved white tunic and brown trousers under a set of armour. While Wintertide armour is more thick and sturdy, as well as a darker greyish colour, Coral Crest armour is more thin and agile, and is a lighter grey, almost white, colour. He wears no gauntlets. His hair is short and messy with the back pulled into a tiny ponytail. He has a short, scruffy beard. He also has fin-like ears, sharp teeth, and sharp nails. He puts on a tough guy act by scowling all the time.
