Oh my god, the news about Akira Toriyama. I'm stunned, but the grief is seeping in between the cracks and I'm not prepared. He is and was invincible and immortal to me.

Akira Toriyama passed away.
I wonder if anyone can really understand just how influential he was? Dragon Ball shaped so much of the modern anime and manga landscape, but that's not all he did.
Without Toriyama, there was no Dragon Quest. Dragon Quest pioneered the modern RPG, and Dragon Quest V introduced the idea of taming monster buddies. Without Toriyama, there is no Pokemon.
Without Toriyama, there is no Toei Animation. Without Toei Animation, there's no Precure. The modern magical girl genre is fundamentally different, and much, much smaller.
Without Toriyama, there's no Dragon Ball. With no Dragon Ball, there's no Sonic. Without Sonic, how long could Sega have lasted?
I don't normally make posts like this, but I don't have a personal tumblr, only this one, so I'm just putting my thoughts down here for a bit.
Akira Toriyama shaped everything. The use of 'Super Saiyan' has entered the common vernacular as shorthand for that kind of power-up. But "power levels"- Whenever we joke about hiding our power level to interact with normal people, that's a Dragon Ball reference. The Vegeta, for that kind of rival.
He was unparalleled in his character design skills. No character he drew could ever be mistaken for another. Every character had supremely unique silhouettes, so you could identify them all at a glance. The one time he broke this rule, it was for Androids 17 and 18, and he did that on purpose, to inform you about the characters. Cell's first form, even if he hated drawing it, is one of the most iconic monster designs I've ever seen.
It's weird to say, but I didn't even think of him as mortal. I thought, somehow, I'd get old and die, and Toriyama would still be there, shaking up every genre he put his hand to.
Even if you're too young, even if Dragon Ball Z was already over before you started watching things, it's impossible to escape his influence. He is everywhere. Toriyama's influence can only be compared to the likes of Osamu Tezuka. He single-handedly shaped the entire media landscape today, even if you don't know it.
Maybe I'll replay Chrono Trigger.

We dont talk enough about the fact that Goku wasnt born strong. Gohan, Vegeta, Broly, Goten, Trunks... all born with innate strength. But Goku... Goku was weak. His entire life growing up, there was ALWAYS someone stronger than him.
For a saiyan to be outmatched by earthlings... ridiculous. But he was. Several times over. Every bit of strength Goku has, he had to work for, train relentlessly for. Its easy to forget because hes so strong now and continiously comes out ahead. But thats the POINT.
Vegeta grew up knowing he was the pride of the saiyan race, born strong, elite, a prodigy. He was hopelessly outmatched by frieza and some of his army, but for a saiyan, vegeta was the strongest (or so he believed).
Because the saiyans put so much belief into power you were born with, power you were destined to have. You either had strength or you didnt. And Goku didnt. So he was third class. His destiny wasnt power, it was weakness.
Its why Vegeta is so constantly thrown off by and therefore obsessed with Goku in the beginning. Because how could someone born so weak be THIS strong? It didnt make sense.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we have Gohan, born with incredible hidden reserves of power. Unlike Goku, Gohan was born with potential. His strength was always there. And sure, he had to work incredibly hard to unlock it but its a story arc we keep seeing repeated with gohan. Either its unlocked with anger or someone unlocks it for him (the grand elder, old kai, etc.)
And then Goten and Trunks, both super saiyan by the age of 7. Power came EASY to them. It was as natural as breathing. Goku, Vegeta, and even Gohan all struggled to reach super saiyan. It took a toll. But Trunks and Goten take that power from literal legend and make it a game.
No one has ever had to work as hard as Goku to achieve strength. And you can argue with me on this all day long if you want to. He didnt have hidden powers. There were no hidden reserves, no one to unlock his innate abilities. When he was a child, his unnatural strength compared to human made him special. But for a saiyan, goku was one of the lowest of their race.
Every bit of strength, every morsel of power in gokus body, was built through training. He didnt unlock hidden potentials, HE CREATED them. Its why Goku is the mortal who figures out how to unlock ultra instinct. Because he almost never won a battle purely based off a sheer power, no. Goku had to be smart, needed to be clever. He was forced to hone technique just as much as power, was taught by all his masters the importance of harnessing his mind as well as his body. He grew up meditating, sensing energy, learning not to rely on his eyes, but all his senses. He was training to filter out his own extra unnecessary movements all the way back when he first met Korin and then later again with Kami.
Tumblr media
Goku lost fights a lot. All the time. But everytime he lost, he learned. Because he was forced too. Because when Goku lost, there was no backup. He was it. And so he would HAVE to come back stronger, have to find the way to win. Or everyone would be dead.
Maybe its just me but i just think theres something incredibly special about a saiyan labeled as "weak," a saiyan no one bothered to pay any mind to being the first to become legend. He avenged their entire race. That little boy with a tail, born with a power level of 2, became the strongest of them all.

FUN FACT: Did you know that Vegeta wasn't blowing smoke on Namek when he claimed to have become a Super Saiyan?
Well. Not entirely, anyway.
And also the process of becoming a Super Saiyan is kind of complicated, and Goku is an enlightened martial arts master.
The process of becoming a Super Saiyan is complicated. The English dub got a bit confused on this point while they were frantically erasing as much spirituality and also martial arts and general power levels talk as they could from the series.
The dub was bad. I don't think that's a surprise to anyone. It was a 90's anime dub. It scrubbed the source material of a lot of stuff.
But specifically here, the dub confused matters when it said that to become a Super Saiyan, you have to be pure of heart. This confused matters, because being purehearted is a thing in Dragon Ball. You have to be purehearted to ride the Nimbus.
Tumblr media
This concept of pureheartedness exists in Dragon Ball. But it has nothing to do with the Super Saiyan.
This isn't the same as that. To become a Super Saiyan, you need something else. Notably, the Viz manga also translates this idea as "pure of heart"....
Tumblr media
But the idea being translated here is more along the lines of tranquility than innocent goodness.
Becoming a Super Saiyan is a bit of a process. To understand the Super Saiyan, we need to talk about limit-breaking. This is a concept that's expressed repeatedly throughout Dragon Ball. In order to become Dragon Ball Powerful, you have to break your limits. You hit a ceiling and that's as far as you can go, until you find some new way to push through and break that ceiling. The series is big on this idea.
Tumblr media
As an example, Mr. Satan is an incredibly formidable martial artist. He is peak. Top-tier fighter. ...within human limits. But he doesn't hold a candle to Krillin because Krillin broke the human limit in childhood.
Mr. Satan is basically Panput from the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai.
Tumblr media
Saiyans are in a different league from humans, and they have different set limits. Different norms, different standards, and different potentials. But, like humans, there's a ceiling. The first step to becoming a Super Saiyan is breaking the Saiyan limit.
Goku, as a low-class Saiyan trained on Earth in martial arts, was able to break through the Saiyan limit during his gravity training in space. This wasn't the goal of his training, mind; Goku had a particular goal in mind. He was subjecting himself to intense gravity so that he could acclimate his body to withstanding higher levels of Kaioken.
Not even realizing that was what he was doing, Goku was the first to shatter his Saiyan boundary and take the first step to becoming a Super Saiyan.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That Goku has transcended Saiyan abilities isn't lost on either Vegeta or Captain Ginyu, both of whom peg him as a Super Saiyan... before walking it back because Goku lacks the overwhelming bloodthirst and battle hunger that characterizes the legend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poor Goku has no idea what any of these people are on about. He might as well be listening to Game of Thrones fans infodump about the Lannisters.
But he wasn't alone. During his fight with Jeice following his third Zenkai of the arc, Vegeta finds himself trashing Jeice. Vegeta's as surprised as Jeice is, to be honest. Even with a Zenkai, he should not be doing this well.
Tumblr media
Vegeta's last Zenkai wasn't just a Zenkai. It pushed him through the Saiyan limit.
You see, something happens to a Saiyan as they cross that boundary. Their ki begins to swell astronomically in preparation for becoming a Super Saiyan. Both Goku and Vegeta at this point have entered a sort of proto-Super Saiyan state. Their powers are passively being inflated.
Goku, too, eventually realizes that his power is growing at an astronomical rate that cannot be explained by his training or his Zenkai boosts or any phenomenon he's aware of. He's just. Swelling with power for reasons he can't fathom.
Tumblr media
Neither of them are Super Saiyans yet. They still need the right spark to ignite it - and, despite knowing more about the Super Saiyan legend than Goku, Vegeta has no idea what that spark is. But they're both inflating like balloons in preparation for ignition.
Vegeta brings up the proto-Super Saiyan again in his first showdown with Frieza.
Tumblr media
He recognizes that he is not yet the Super Saiyan. But he is a proto-Super Saiyan. He still feels it, still feels his power inflating within himself. He just. Needs. That. Spark.
But he won't find it. He said it himself: He doesn't think Goku and his "soft heart" can become the Super Saiyan. The Super Saiyan is supposed to be filled with rage and battle hunger.
But breaking the Saiyan limit isn't enough. You need the spark: A tranquil heart awakened by rage.
There are two pieces to that. The first is a tranquil heart. What does that mean? It means tranquility. Stillness. Peace. Becoming one with yourself and the cosmic universe.
During his training in space, with nothing to concern himself with and no distractions, Goku found tranquility. Alone in the void of space with only his beloved art, he achieved a measure of serenity and peace that he's never known before.
When Goku steps off that ship, he's different. He's entirely focused on the task at hand. He doesn't even want to fight the Ginyus, which is a stark departure for his character. He has no interest in the joy of battle; Only in doing what he came for and going home.
Tumblr media
Goku asks the Ginyu Force multiple times to just go away. He does not care about this. He is thoroughly disinterested in fighting.
He's not even mad. They beat up his son and his best friend, and Goku does not care. Also, he can read minds now. Because he is the Heavenly Buddha, I guess.
Tumblr media
This is a super weird moment, but its main purpose is to demonstrate that Goku has become... something else. He's not just "Goku but stronger"; he's changed on a fundamental level.
Goku is no longer a rash, impulsive student. He has become a master of his art. Do you see that kanji on his back? Kaio presented Goku with this new dogi after he got out of the hospital... uh... somehow.
Tumblr media
You. Uh. You gonna elaborate on where the fuck that came from, Goku? No? Okay, man. You do you.
In any case, Goku's new dogi is distinctive because it erases the sigils of both the Kame school and Kaio. Originally, he would wear the Kame sigils on both front and back to reflect his status as a student of Kame-senryu.
Even if he did only technically study Kame-senryu for less than a year. It's fine; the Muten-Roshi filled him with a lot of philosophy that's guided him over the years so it still counts.
Tumblr media
After he trained under Kaio, the sigil on his back was replaced with Kaio's sigil, to reflect that he is Kaio's student now as much as he is the Muten-Roshi's. Though he left the Kame-senryu sigil on Goku's front, because he is a student of both.
Tumblr media
But from the moment Goku steps off that ship, both Kaio and the Kame sigils have been replaced by this new one.
Tumblr media
This new sigil serves two purposes. First is that it's the first kanji of Goku's name. Both of his masters are now gone from Goku's expression, replaced by Goku himself; This symbolizes that Goku has, himself, become the master. His art is now fully his own.
Goku is at the peak of his journey. There is nothing more for him to learn. It falls to him now to cultivate, develop, and evolve his art for himself, using the knowledge and mastery he's acquired. And, as we'll see in the next arc, to ultimately pass it on to the next generation to come.
But, bringing this back to the tranquil heart thing: The kanji for 'Go' also represents enlightenment. Goku has found peace with himself and his place in the cosmic universe. That is why he, and not Vegeta, is ready to have his spark ignited.
He's broken the Saiyan limit. He has a tranquil heart. All he needs now is to snap, and have his tranquil heart awakened by rage.
Tumblr media
But Vegeta still has a ways to go. Because his heart is far from tranquil.
Tumblr media
The best he can come up with is "I Zenkai'd into this, I can Zenkai out of it!" Vegeta is very fettered, especially in conflict with Frieza. He is not one with the cosmic universe. He is a nervous wreck of emotions and wants and distractions. He was so close, but he could never have ignited here. Not under these circumstances.
No, Vegeta would only find his tranquility after becoming stranded on Earth. (No, anime, Vegeta did not have a spare spaceship on hand to leave immediately.)
Three years, living at Capsule Corp until he moved out and got his own place. Free from the yoke of Frieza and able to pursue nothing more than his own self-improvement. Driven by a desire to surpass Goku but in a low-stress environment...
Tumblr media
...and apparently hanging out with Bulma in his downtime.
Tumblr media
That's where Vegeta found his tranquility. And the spark of rage that ignited his tranquil heart? His own inadequacies, of course.
Tumblr media
Never change, Vegeta. XD

If you still have Sailor Moon on the brain, did watching it at all give you any options you wish to share about other magical girl esk media you wish existed or your own take on how you would create a story in that media space?
If not, then maybe, if you're inclined to, recount some interesting findings about the connections that exist between shojo and shonen media?
(If neither then please disregard, sorry for imposing)
It was interesting! I was surprised at how much it had in common with shonen action anime. Half the boss battles get resolved with a beam clash and the only difference between Super Saiyan and Neo Queen Serenity is whether the hair or the outfit changes.
The one part I found myself sliding off of - due to personal writing preference - is how Usagi is the defacto center of the universe and everyone else is very explicitly playing support. That's part of why I liked the Outer Senshi so much - because they've all got their own ludicrously OP stuff going on, they feel more like equals to Usagi than glorified bodyguards. The inner planet senshi get their own character arcs, which is excellent, but after a while it's pretty clear that none of them can ever finish a fight without Sailor Moon. And that's fine, that's the pretense of the story - their jobs are very explicitly to protect the turbopowerful demigoddess moon princess while she gets her act together enough to remember she can win - but I prefer writing an ensemble cast where everyone feels like the hero of their own story, not the support in someone else's, and that's pretty much antithetical to the core premise of the show.
It also has a lot of the hallmarks of a soft magic system that I personally struggle with - the old "you win by believing in yourself" thing basically means "you win when the plot demands it would be most interesting for you to win" - but again, they can get away with a lot by letting the actual core premise of the universe's power system be stuff like "a pure heart gives you strength" and "the power of love will legitimately make you more powerful." And I respect that the show doesn't just give people powerups whenever - one of the parts I found most emotionally impactful was in the finale of season 3, when Sailor Saturn is going to fight the big bad all by herself and will 100% definitely die in the process, and because Sailor Moon has sacrificed the season's macguffin, she can no longer transform into her powered-up form to help - which doesn't stop her from screaming the transformation phrase over and over, because she is desperate to save Sailor Saturn even if she's been told it can't possibly work. When she gets her The Most Purest Heart Ever powerup at the last possible second, that feels excellent because it's a profoundly impactful character moment that's being supported by the plot with a tangible powerup. It's pretty telling that we don't even see the final bossfight; it's not about the spectacle or the beam clash, it's about the character arcs that surround them. I think that's a really interesting way to handle it and to add depth to an otherwise basic "whose number is bigger" style struggle.
I'm also deeply fond of paragons, and as the seasons go on I really like how Usagi's ultimately kind personality drives her to constantly help, no matter the personal cost or how aggressively people try to dissuade her - and I like that she gets angry and frustrated and even says or does harsh things sometimes, but will ultimately always do what she thinks is right. It makes her feel like a real human being, and the "weaknesses" and flaws in her character - aka the parts that make her something more complicated than a perfectly stoic problem-solving machine - are a lot of fun to watch.
Personal preference, I'd like to see more magical girl stuff where the central pillar of the plot is not a constant will-they-won't-they het romance - but I also like how Sailor Moon as a series is legitimately aware that this is not actually the de facto most important relationship for everyone. Surprising multitude of gay characters aside, I recently caught a season 2 episode where Makoto donates blood to save a close friend, and explains to Usagi that she isn't in love with him, but they have an incredibly profound friendship that's more important to her than any boyfriend, a concept with startles and confuses Usagi. It seems to be a case where the heroine has a Foundational Romantic Subplot that defines the course of her life and the plot, but the rest of the characters get to have more complicated dynamics where their life goals aren't "omg boys", and I liked that a lot!
When comparing and contrasting it to shonen action anime, I think the magical girl genre manages to integrate the lower-stakes slice of life elements significantly more smoothly, and to great effect - the 90% of the show that's silly and ridiculous makes the 10% of it that's extremely serious and gutwrenching much more impactful. That's something that a lot of shonen series struggle with, where the tone goes from "moderately serious with the occasional goof" to "extremely serious with major character deaths." The magical girl genre going from "the dumbest episode premise you've ever heard" to "extremely serious with major character deaths" is a much more precipitous plunge into icy water, as it were.
When I think about how I would write a magical girl story, I basically just smack into the premise of Exalted. Its worldbuilding has exactly what I want - an interesting system of powerset-reincarnation into worthy hosts that allows for complex interpersonal dynamics through varying levels of memory preservation, several different flavors of magical transforming person including Evil Versions, and the one thing I prioritize in my own writing - a world that feels like it can have a lot of main characters and heroes of their own story. Everyone in Exalted has their own shit going on and their own past-life drama, including former friend groups/adventuring parties, soulmates (both regular and evil versions), and anyone who might've previously killed them. Most importantly for my preferences, there's no default main character of the universe. If I were to make an urban fantasy magical girl setting, I'd probably use an extremely similar premise because I find the ramifications of it unbelievably interesting in a way the system itself is not designed to explore.

Peaceful Paradise Interrupted
Type: One Shot
Gohan x Reader, Reader is the adopted daughter of Vegeta and Bulma
Summary: Your peace wasn't often challenged, but when someone came to earth to challenge your father and/or Goku, you end up more annoyed being in the middle of it than fearful.
Tumblr media
Your life had settled into a routine, though after most of your childhood and adolescence, you weren't complaining. The structure gave you a peace of mind, minus the occasional extraterrestrial being hell-bent on revenge against your father or challenging Goku.
Those spats, at this rate, lasted a day at the most, an hour at the least. You hardly ever knew of them until after the issues were resolved.
Safe to say you enjoyed your peace, you enjoyed your routine, you enjoyed everything your life had become. Minus this.
The barrel of some weird, foreign gun looking at you had become your new common view. The alien man who had broken into your home, looking for one of the several (like five) Saiyan life forms, only to find you lazing around in your pajamas while attempting to finish some paper due for some class you were beginning to hate.
You craned your neck to peer around at him, studying him as he spoke into whatever communicator his people used, before speaking up, more annoyed than anything, "You realize how stupid this is right?"
He blanched, taken aback by the calm demeanor in which you spoke. He barked some orders before turning his full attention towards you, "Excuse me?"
You shrugged, "This was dumb of you to do." Your legs were beginning to cramp up under you, and you were at least grateful you had worn longer pants, "Haven't you even heard of what happens to people who come to earth looking for a fight?"
He sneered, "They end up choosing life forms far beneath them, yes, little lady, I've heard the stories."
Rude. "I'm just saying - "
"You are not the one I'm after."
"I kind of figured," He narrowed his eyes at you, pressing the gun closer towards your face, "I can't imagine I did anything wrong enough to piss you off."
"Do you know of the Saiyans Vegeta and Kakarot?"
"Hard to not know them," Your voice was dry, and you knew that after the scolding your mother would unleash on you, she'd have some pride in how you were keeping your cool.
"My readings had indicated that they had been here, though upon arrival, I only found you. What is a weak, earthling like you doing around two of the most powerful beings on this planet?"
"Don't let them hear you say that, my father's ego is large enough already."
His eyebrow, or where you would assume an eyebrow would be, twitched, "Your- your father?"
You hummed, introducing yourself casually, before sending a sarcastic smile, "Vegeta's oldest."
"Your power levels are far too weak to be - "
"Adopted," You could feel the energy before anything else, the feeling of your hair standing up on end alerting you that your fiancé had gotten the emergency signal sent to his phone, "But, still."
You braced yourself, the door launching open with the sounds of splintered wood falling all around. Gohan was standing in the doorframe, hair still black, but eyes livid. You glanced at the shocked man before you, if Gohan didn't feel the need to power up than this guy was weak- what had he been hoping to do?
You watched as your fiancé smiled, something cold and dark, a look that was so foreign to see on him. It sent chills down even your spine, "Hi," The cheeriness was forced, "Honey you didn't tell me we had guests."
"Surprise visitors." You glanced sadly at the remnants of the front door as Gohan walked inside, you'd have to ask Goku to fix it again.
The energy coming off of your fiancé was beyond suffocating, and the blaster fell from where it had been pointed at you, trembling in the alien's hand.
"W- Who are you?"
"I should be the one asking you that considering you're in my house." Your fiancé's anger was getting harder to hide, the smile bordering bloodthirsty.
You flexed your hands from where they were bound, sighing, catching his attention, "Please don't destroy anymore of the house."
Gohan didn't look away from the man, who was frantically trying to contact some of his men. You assumed they had all scattered- and odds are some ended up coming across your father and Goku.
They might fare better than this man was about to.
"Of course," You blinked and he was across the room, grabbing the man by the front of his tunic, before lifting him up, the gun dropping to the floor.
"Let's take this outside, shall we?"
Just as quickly as he had gotten across the room, your fiancé had taken the offending man outside, the sounds of shouting growing muffled as they left your home.
You sighed to yourself, twisting further as you remembered the self-defense classes your mother made you take. It felt almost pointless at the time- who was stupid enough to do something to piss off your family? But as you managed to free your sore wrists, you were grateful.
By the time you moved on to untying your legs, Gohan strolled back in, not a hair out of place. He smiled at you, moving to crouch down in front of you, softly batting your hands away to undo the rest.
"Are you alright?"
He paused, laughing softly at the question.
"I should be asking you that," The rope fell, and he helped you stand, hands moving softly across you, feeling and searching for any indicators that he should go out and end that man.
"I'm alright," You smiled, "You got here just in time."
Gohan nodded, eyes falling shut, and he leaned down, forehead pressing against yours. You remained quiet, letting him process everything.
"I was so scared when you sent me that signal," He spoke quietly, eyebrows furrowing as if reliving the moment, "I wasn't sure what to expect. And dad and Vegeta were already dealing with their own stuff at the moment."
"He didn't hurt me," You reached forward, pulling your fiancé closer, allowing him to burrow into you as best he could, "I think he was more confused than anything to find a human here."
Gohan laughed, a wet sound from the back of his throat, "Right. Not the terrifying Saiyan legends he was expecting."
"Just a human college student who probably would have hit him with a frying pan had I been in the kitchen," You glanced at the dishes laying in the sink- had you been closer you definitely would have.
"I assume the others are taken care of?"
Gohan nodded, "Dad and Vegeta are on their way here - "
The sound of your name being shouted outside alerted you that more company had arrived, and the sounds of an engine being killed let you know your mother had arrived with them.
You watched as Goku made his way to the front entrance of your house, peering down curiously at the broken door, hand rubbing the back of his head, "Aw man, I feel like I just fixed - "
He was interrupted by your father barging by, snarling an, "Out of the way Kakarot", before he made his way inside. You saw your mother trailing close behind, eyes wide and worried, hand clutched to her chest. Goku had enough smarts to step out of the way, moving to stand where you saw your brother and Goten in the yard, the later of the two poking the unconscious assailant with a stick.
"Oh, my baby! Are you hurt?" Gohan stepped back, hands up in defense as you shot him a glare.
Your mothers arms wrapped around you tightly, your ribs wincing at the strength of her hold, "I'm fine mom, he didn't do - "
"And this is why I still think you and Gohan should have taken one of the homes near us!" She huffed as she let you go, arms resting on your shoulders as she glared at you, no malice behind her eyes, "My security would have ensured that that man never even looked at you - "
"She moves back in and Gohan can go home with Kakarot, everyone's happy," Your father snarked, arms crossed over his chest.
"Vegeta," Your mother turned to glare at him, arms never leaving their place around you, jerking you forward with her.
"To be fair dad he was the one who got here first," You rolled your eyes as your father pointedly ignored this remark.
"Still - with the damages done I think it's best if you two come stay at home for now!"
"Mom, it's literally just the front door - "
"Perfect!" She squeezed you tighter- a warning not to argue.
You glanced helplessly at your fiancé, who only shrugged in response. The man who more than likely stopped himself from killing moments ago, fell powerless in the face of your overprotective mother.

If there's one part about Vegeta's arc that I absolutely love, it would be this:
Tumblr media
His regression in season 8 was very well done. It wasn't shoehorned in and it made sense. I remember seeing on Reddit years ago people complaining about this specific part of his arc, saying that it made no sense for him to regress the way he did when he was redeemed at this point. But consider this. It makes perfect sense when you factor in one thing: he wasn't redeemed yet. He was still going through his redemption arc by this point.
Vegeta wasn't raised to be a family man. He was raised to be a killing machine. He was raised with the idea in mind that he would one day be the king of the Saiyan race. All of that got taken away from him. His belief that he was the strongest Saiyan alive was taken when Goku became a Super Saiyan and defeated Frieza, and again when Gohan became a Super Saiyan 2 and killed Perfect Cell. And then Goku makes the choice to stay dead instead of coming back to life via the dragon balls. So now, Vegeta's one rival, the person who he swore he would one day surpass and defeat is gone for good. So all Vegeta has left at this point is the family he created with Bulma. Something that he most likely never envisioned for himself. So he decides to live a life on earth with her and their son.
Everything seems to be going fine for Vegeta....until the World Martial Arts Tournament happens. And Goku decides to return on this one day so that he can participate. Suddenly, all of the feelings that Vegeta bottled up over the last 7 years since Goku's death comes rushing to the surface. Finally, after all this time, Vegeta could finally prove that he's better than Goku. They even get matched up to fight each other in the tournament! How lucky is that, right? And then this guy happens:
Tumblr media
And just like that, Vegeta's chance to fight Goku is now shattered thanks to this new threat to Earth. Instead of his attention being on him, Goku has his sights set on defeating Buu before he can be revived. For the entire time Vegeta, Goku, Gohan, and the Supreme Kai are in Babidi's lair, Vegeta is angry. He's waited 7 years for the chance to fight Goku again, and now that he finally gets the chance to do so, this happens. We see Vegeta's mood get worse and worse throughout the time they fight Babidi's minions, and it's gets so bad to the point where Babidi is able to get Vegeta under his control. Now, as Vegeta pointed out later on, he actually could of fought off Babidi's mind control. But he chose not to. Why? Because he saw how powerful Babidi's minions were while they were under his control. So Vegeta figured he could use some of that power to do this:
Tumblr media
Fight Goku without any interruptions. Which is what he wanted from the start. Even though he knew that fighting would give more energy to Buu and thus revive him, Vegeta didn't care. So long as he got to fight Goku. Keep in mind that this is the same guy who let Semi-Perfect Cell absorb Android 18, despite the fact that he knew it could end up being a bad decision. But Vegeta didn't care because he wanted a good fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now there's one line that Vegeta said to Goku during this fight that always stuck with me from the moment I heard it back when I was a kid. When Goku asks him why did he do all of this, Vegeta responds with "Because I wanted him to reawaken the evil within my heart. I wanted him to return me to the way I was...BEFORE!!! I WAS THE PERFECT WARRIOR! COLD AND RUTHLESS! I LIVED BY MY STRENGTH ALONE! UNINHIBITED BY FOOLISH EMOTION!!! But slowly...over the years... I became one of you. My quest for greatness gradually giving way to this life of mediocrity. I awoke one day to find that I had settled down and formed a family. I had even grown quite fond of them. Would you believe, I almost started thinking that the Earth was a nice place to live. Do you understand now, Kakarrot? That's why I needed Babidi! To set me free! By releasing the evil within my heart! He has freed me of these petty attachments. And I have to say it feels pretty good."
That entire speech he gave to Goku summarized PERFECTLY the internal conflict that Vegeta had going on within him. On the one hand, he wants this. He wants to feel strong again. He wants to defeat Goku and prove that he's better than him once and for all. He wants the life of a warrior back, because for so long that's all he knew. But on the other hand, he knows that the way he's going about it is wrong. Like he just admitted to Goku, there's a small part of him that loves the life he made for himself, and that he loves his family, too. Which is why Goku then says to him "Do you really believe what you're saying?". Now, Vegeta doesn't respond to this, but he doesn't have to. His silence is his answer. After that, the long awaited fight between these two begins. And after a while, Vegeta does come to the realization that he fucked up big time, and that he needs to do something to make up for it. Which is why he does this:
Tumblr media
He knocks Goku out while his back is turned. Why? Because he wants to fight Majin Buu alone. Because if it hadn't been for Vegeta's desire to fight Goku, Majin Buu probably wouldn't have gotten the energy he needed to be revived. So Vegeta decides to take full responsibility for everything and take on Buu himself. To me, this is when his redemption arc comes full circle, because of his sacrifice. He knows that he can't beat Majin Buu through normal means, so what does he do? Blow himself up in an explosion that he's certain will destroy Buu along with him.
Tumblr media
Vegeta even says in his mind that he's doing this for Bulma, Trunks, and even Goku. Something that I'm pretty sure a lot of us never thought we would ever hear him say. That he's doing something for other people. That he's not doing this for himself. I'm pretty sure that he saw this as his way to atone (hence why this move is called "final atonement" in the video games) but the fact remains that he did it anyway. Sure, we see Vegeta get angry when Perfect Cell killed Future Trunks, but still. That moment can't compare to this one. All in all, Majin Vegeta is the best part of Vegeta's redemption arc and the way how it's written really did an excellent job in wrapping it up.

My Wakfu Season 4 Head Canon / Theory / Manic ramblings
I don't know if someone else already made a post about this, if yes, please direct me to it, anyway strap in:
So, what has always bothered me about the MMO Eliotropes was their weird skin tone and markings.
Tumblr media
Remember, they were added to the game(s) before season 3 and the OVA were even out and all we knew about them was this blurb:
Having appeared via a freak accident, Eliotropes are but mirror images of their creator, the King-God.
I don't know wether this was confirmed back then, but we all just accepted that Yugo was the King-God. He was the King of the Eliatropes, he was a demigod, it made sense. We just didn't know what exactly this accident was yet. And that was the first time I got way too hung up on their skin color. (Some people might claim they don't see color, but not me.) I came up with 2 explanations: Explanation 1: This was how Yugos God-King-Form would look like
So in Season 2, when Qilby gets the Eliacube, his skin color changes and he gets these black markings;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
While Yugo just gets these glowing tattoos in his "Eaxalted" form, which do, however, look kinda similar. Also during his transformation, Qilby's tats would glow at first, just like Yugo's, before turning black.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This let me to assume (all these years ago) that Qilby's transformation (which the Wiki calls "Lobotimized" for some reason) was the more evolved form of Yugo's. I basically tought while Yugo just unlocked Super Saiyan, Qilby could go Super Saiyan 2. And at some point, Yugo would archieve a similar form too, which would be when he became the God-King, and that was why the Eliotropes all had white skin and blue markings. (I just thought Yugos tats would turn blue instead of black because ykno, color schemes and stuff.)
Also there was this Krosmaster Mini called Yugo unleashed, so I thought this was the direction they were going:
Tumblr media
Explanation 2: Their skin markings look like Adamai's
You know, this guy. With the white skin / scales and the blue markings.
Tumblr media
In hindsight the easier explanation. Adamai is Yugo's twin brother, so it would make sense if the Eliotropes had an imprint of Adamai. Or maybe Adamai helped in whatever accident created the Eliotropes. The brothers already combined their powers a few times to do BIG MAGIC, so maybe that would also be the case for the "accident".
Then the OVA came and Yugo got the six Dofus
It all made sense in my mind. With the six Dofus, Yugo was more powerful than a god, so this would be when he reached his King-God-Form and...
Tumblr media
It kinda just looked like his normal "Exalted Form" with different markings. Okay, I thought, so it has to be the Adamai explanation, right?
Then Season 3 and the Oropo OVA came and...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These guys don't look like the Eliotropes we knew until that point at all.
Okay,
maybe they changed the designs so Amalia would recognise Oropo as Yugo?
maybe as more Eliotropes died, they started to look more like Yugo/white people?
Either way, it's super weird that we have never seen a game-looking Eliotrope in the show or even in the OVA.
Also, aside from Oropo the other Eliotropes we see seem to be super variant from Yugo, with some missing the head-thingies and others not even able to create portals, it seems (Repulse dies because he gets thrown off the tower. I think he would have saved himself if he could). In the game however, the Eliotropes seem to be pretty much just reskinned (ha!) Eliatropes with all the same, maybe watered down powers.
Okay, so the rational thing would be to just accept that they retconned the Eliotropes for the show a bit, as there was quite a long break in production. Or just accept it as one of these wird things, like Osamodas evolving to have blue skin in at most a few hundred years.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ankama has changed designs drastically all the time between media, they really don't like to enslave themselfes to esthetics and and hard lore and really if you think about it does that not give them so much more potential for creat
AND THEN CAME SEASON 4
Spoilers up til episode 10, I guess And the season starts with a reminder that the Eliotropes were created because Yugo did not have perfect control over them and who gets their grabby hands on all 6 (six) of them?
This guy
Tumblr media
Notice how his markings are blue now? Hmmm...
"But Qilby should have far more control over the Dofus than Yugo, that's his thing, he has so much experience!", the strawperson said. Yes, but Qilby is also mentally unstable and hyper traumatoze, which he says himself.
He repeatedly has episodes, even while he is using to the dofus.
Also, attuning to the Eliasphere was super taxing and clearly outside of his abilities (as he says himself), so what I want to say is:
there were multiple occasions where he could have slipped up and created his own "accident".
Qilby is the King-God of the Eliotropes from the MMO.
Yugos accident resulted in the creations of eliotropes because
Tumblr media
AND QILBY'S GREATEST FEAR IS TO BE ALONE, so it would make sense that his "wish" would also create more "family" for him.
This would also explain some of the differences between show Eliotropes and MMO Eliotropes:
Obviously, the MMO Eliotropes look far more like Qilby's true(?) form, with snow-white skin and blue markings.
Yugo did not really have a great idea what his people were actually like, which explains why his Eliotropes would have so much variance in appearance and power between them. In contrast, Qilby has the most perfect memory of the Eliatrope people in existence, arguably better than the Goddess' herself, considering her millennia-long absence. So it would make sense why his Eliotropes would basically be perfect copies, sans the skin color. Also, despite his mental health, he is still far more skilled than Yugo, which could also explain why his copies are closer to the real deal.
Also, Yugo's Eliotropes (mostly) have his memory, which seems like a thing that would like... come up? Like, at all? And it would make sense that Qilby's "wish" would include for his Eliotropes to be blank slates memory wise, since his recollection of his former lifes is literally the cause of all his suffering.
I rest my case.
In all honesty, this is all probably just a case of Ankama being all loosey-goosey with their lore, especially between the show and the games. But this theory presents a way for the MMO Eliotropes (or Qilby Eliotropes, as I will call them from now on) existing in the same canon as the show, which otherwise is probably the biggest canon "problem". Also, I like the Eliotropes, I like their design, and I like to have a reason to believ they will continue exist somewhere in this funny world some horny frenchmen made up. So, yeah this is my headcanon. First post ever on tumblr, after lurking for over a decade, please be kind to it. See ya when I have to vent my next crackpot theory. Or when I remember interesting parts from the MMO that might interest show-only folks.

Dragon Ball Males x reader - Pregnancy HCs
[Reader and (character) are married]
Goku
When you tell him you’re pregnant, he’s confused at first but when he places his hands on your stomach and spends a moment in silence, his eyes widen in realization and he begins to smile
He has a vague understanding of what pregnancy is
Keep in mind that he has two children from his ex-wife, Chi-Chi
Goku was very happy and gives you a large yet gentle hug
He’s excited to be a father again (he loves children even though he isn’t the most responsible with them)
He’s especially happy that he gets to spend even more time with you, his beautiful wife
The pregnancy is long and hard especially when the kid started kicking (remember, this is both Goku’s kid and a half-saiyan so the kicks are strong)
Fortunately, the cravings didn’t get too strange and, much to your husband’s delight, you were very cuddly which meant lots of affection for both of you
When the child is born, they turn out to be a healthy baby boy
Goku couldn’t help but smile when he was holding his newborn son for the first time
“He’s.. so small..” You chuckle softly, tired from giving birth
“Yeah, he would be. He’s just a baby.”
You two decided to name him “Kumo” meaning “Cloud”
“When can I start training him?”
“Goku no.”
Vegeta
When you tell him the big news, he’s shocked, blinking at you as he processes the information
It’s not the first time he’s been told that his wife was pregnant, but it shocks him every time
He hesitantly tried to sense the child growing in your womb, and when he found them, his eyes softened
He slowly approached you, giving you a gentle hug and a kiss
“I’ll protect them with my life. I promise.” He whispers softly as he buries his face into your neck
Even though you were pregnant with Vegeta’s kid, the 9 months were rather easy
Vegeta had little to no problem going and getting whatever you needed to sooth your odd food cravings
Vegeta’s ex-wife, Bulma was more than happy to help you both out when the baby was due
Trunks, your husband’s first born and your step-son, was elated to find out he was going to have another sibling
When you finally gave birth, you presented Vegeta with a beautiful baby girl
He couldn’t hold back a smile as he held her in his arms
She had a full head of black hair and her father’s black eyes, indicating her dominant genes were Saiyan
“Hello, Eschalotte.” He murmured softly letting out a soft purr as he nuzzled his daughter affectionately, causing her to let out a giggle
Gohan
Naturally, he’ll get both happy and nervous when you tell him
Yes, he’s been a father before, but he gets anxious about making sure everything goes smoothly
While he’s not going to be there at your side all the time, having to keep up with work, he’ll do his best to satisfy your needs and make you comfortable
At your word, he’ll rush to the store for food or (if he’s home and not too busy) to cuddle with you
Honestly, he’s a cinnamon roll
When you give birth, he’s surprised to find that he’s the proud father of a little quarter saiyan boy, now lovingly named Daiko (Powerful Light)
He got incredibly emotional and began to cry happy tears
“Th-thank you, (Y/n). I love you so so much.”
Raditz
He was shook
“Y-you’re pregnant? Are you sure?”
At first you were worried that he was upset with the news but then he reassured you that he was actually happy
He was just making sure you weren’t pulling a prank on him
Lucky for him you weren’t joking
He’s never been a father before and he has no idea what exactly to do
Saiyan pregnancies are handled differently than human pregnancies so everything he knows is just thrown out the window at this point
Needless to say however, he does his best to make sure you’re happy
Expect lots of affection and service during your three trimesters
When your baby bump appears and the child starts kicking, that’s when he starts “talking to the baby”
“Little one, I’m so glad you’re so eager to meet us, but you need more time in there. We want to make sure that you’re nice and strong and healthy so you can take on the world with us. Be nice to mommy, okay?”
Your heart melts every time
When you end up giving birth, it’s through a long and tough labor
Raditz is seriously panicking
However, it was all well worth it to see your saiyan husband’s reaction to the sight of his child in the bassinet
Tears began to fall from his eyes while he tried to hold them back or hide them
He looked so happy and he held his hand out toward his newborn daughter, Rutaba
“She’s so beautiful.. just like her mother..”
Zamasu (Goku Black)
Well, you were certainly nervous when telling him
You knew a bit of his ideal world, a somewhat mortal free place, and that made you nervous about how he would react to what you had to tell him
A half-kai-half-human child, a.k.a. a technical demigod
When you approached him, he looked your way, sensing that you wanted to talk
However, before you could get the words out he smiles and asks how far along you are
You just stand there in shock and confusion
“How.. how did you..?”
“I can sense her energy. She’s rather strong for an embryo.”
“She???”
That’s how you found out that you were pregnant with your and Zamasu’s daughter
For the most part, your strange behavior and cravings during the next nine months didn’t bother him
He did find it occasionally annoying when he was trying to plot his ultimate takeover of the universe and you called for him to grab you some odd food combination that made him cringe in disgust
However, he got over it and pretended like everything was perfectly fine
And thank goodness he did because when the due date finally arrived along with your daughter, he realized that the frustration wasn’t necessary because everything was so perfect
He kissed the forehead of his daughter who stopped crying when he did
“Hello there, Kamiko (Little goddess).”
You couldn’t help but smile as you realized that you never needed to be nervous about being pregnant
You knew he would treat you just right

Saiyan Squad AU outline (part 2) ⭐️
part 1
Vegeta, Nappa, Raditz, and Kakarot form a squad and fight in a war between Frieza and what remains of the Saiyans.
At some point early on, they land on Vampa, where they find Broly.
Broly’s father, Paragus, was banished to Vampa after he was accused of working with Frieza. As further punishment, Broly was sent with him so the two would surely die on the planet together. They managed to survive and Paragus swore revenge. Before the squad arrived, Paragus had presumably abandoned Broly. When Broly meets Raditz, Kakarot, Nappa, and Vegeta, they right away recognize his immense power and take him in.
The Squad travel space and go on mission after mission, trying to find a new planet call home and bring down Frieza’s empire.
As king, Vegeta is the self-declared leader and the angry, arrogant gremlin we all know and love. Since they’ve known him since childhood and practically grew up together, Raditz and Kakarot are pretty casual with him and call him names like “boss” or “Geets”, which annoys Vegeta. He also hates how he turns out to be the shortest among his team of giants. Also, after being forced into being a child king, held hostage, and having his world and people mercilessly slaughtered, Vegeta is (understandably) hell bent on killing Frieza himself. He also strives to rebuilding his kingdom to its former glory and becoming the strongest king there ever was.
Raditz is a sarcastic (not so) little shit and the stressed, tired older sibling of Kakarot. He always picks on his idiot little brother and bemoans about constantly looking after him (but let’s face it he does care about his baby brother). He himself is a hot mess who somehow gets into trouble a lot and loves chaos (when it’s done to someone that’s not him, that is).
Ah, Kakarot…he’s essentially still our beloved goofball himbo. He aspires to being a great warrior and may come off as intimidating due to his strength, gruff appearance, and wild nature at first, but Kakarot is surprisingly friendly, kind-hearted, and not as gung-ho on killing as most Saiyans would be. He’s laid-back, happy-go-lucky, and loves a good time. To him, the whole team is his family and his idea of a mission is exploring like he’s on a fun field trip. Kakarot is weaker than his teammates and his demeanor doesn’t make it any easier, so he’s seen and treated as the runt of the bunch. He makes up for it with his loyalty and hard-work ethic. If he is intimidated or attacked, he will fight. He also doesn’t like being mocked. Kakarot tries to be an ideal Saiyan, scary and tough as nails, but his good nature always somehow comes out.
Nappa is basically the Team Dad. He trains and looks after Vegeta, Raditz, Kakarot, and Broly from young ages (so it’s no wonder he ends up bald as a melon so soon). He’s essentially a more butch version of Ginyu; rough but still very flamboyant. He would exercise to The Village People and kick back and happily watch his boys raze a whole city. As you can guess, he’s not a very responsible parental figure.
Broly is the newest recruit and the wild card. He normally keeps to himself and is very quiet, so when chaos erupts (as it almost always does) he usually just watches or casually plays a small part. He’s just glad to be a part of something. But by no means is he all that harmless. If he’s called into action or when things get hairy, you might want to start running. He’s basically a nuclear bomb crossed with an elephant.
The Saiyans come across Earth by happenstance. Kakarot crash lands there after being chased by Frieza’s men. His pod and scouter are both badly damaged in the wreck, so he explores around while finding a way off the planet or at least contact his squad. Along the way, he finds the four star dragon ball. He doesn’t know what it is but he thinks it’s neat and it reminds him of Planet Sadala. He does also get chased after by Frieza scouts and encounters the Red Ribbon Army (who are attracted by his new souvenir and they steal his totaled pod). With all the havoc going on around him, he of course attracts the attention of the Z Fighters (Yamcha, Tien, Chiaotzu, Krillin, Roshi, and Bulma).
Kakarot does cross paths with the Ox King & Chichi also and an accidental marriage proposal still takes place, but Kakarot doesn’t understand it at first because Saiyans do not practice marriage and are not that familiar with ‘dating’, ‘boyfriends/girlfriends’, ‘husbands/wives’ or weddings (the closest they have is a very small formal ceremony practiced only by Saiyan royalty). When it’s explained to him and Kakarot realizes he’s technically chosen Chichi as his mate, he’s…thrilled. She’s a cute princess who can use a giant fan as a weapon like it’s nothing and she’s a hell of a cook. She’s pretty much his dream girl.
There’s also Vegebul & Launchitz, but I might go into detail in another post.
On a random, fun note, Nappa and Master Roshi strangely become sort of friends. They’re both bald senseis and they love exercise videos (Roshi for perverted reasons, Nappa actually does like them for fun exercise)

Caring For Sick Vegeta Headcanons | Vegeta x Reader |
author's note: hi again! this is inspired by some squabbling i did with a friend earlier as he was suffering from a migraine. i wanted to try my hand at headcanons again as well!
pairing: vegeta x fem!reader
warnings: light mention of nsfw topics, like blink and you'll miss it light
Tumblr media
Vegeta initially tries to hide that he's getting sick
he's very fucking bad at it tho
His nose is stuffed and he's forced to breathe through his mouth, and you can literally hear the congestion when he talks
He looks so tired, and his appetite is literally halved
"Vegeta, get back in bed." You tell him when he shuffles into the kitchen for breakfast
He may be sick, but he's still Vegeta
Which is to say he's still stubborn as hell
"How dare you talk to me that way?! I am-"
"You are pissing me off." You growl, picking up the nearest kitchen utensil and holding it up threateningly
This is the only time Vegeta wisely picks his battles
He growls and turns around to go back to the bedroom, bundling up in the blankets
"I'm cold, woman." He says when you come into the room with a tray of breakfast for him
You shove a beanie on him that you had specially made just for him, since the store bought ones didn't have a chance in hell of fitting over his mane of hair
he's also just got a big head
Vegeta sneers at you but remains quiet. He knows he looks like a damn fool, but with a bright red nose, there isn't much he can do to seem like more of the prideful, powerful Saiyan he is
You bundle him up properly in the many blankets, fluffing the pillows behind him so he can sit up and relax while he eats
"You call this a meal for a Saiyan?" He snarks. "Looks like an appetizer to the appetizer."
lol @ him not finishing it all
"You... Wouldn't bully a sick man, would you?" His cheeks are flushed with embarrassment
"Of course not." You smirk and kiss his cheek. "But I certainly will bully a shit-talking prince."
"Please no."
You give him shit for only eating two pieces of toast and half of his eggs and bacon even after he's all better
and subsequently has the strength again to make you regret it
You catch him trying to sneak out of bed to go train, so you quite literally tackle him back into bed
"What... What the hell is wrong with you?!"
"Stay. In. Bed. Vegeta." You straddle him and pin his wrists down. "I am not doing this with you this time. Keep your ass down until you can breathe through your damn nose. Are we clear??"
Vegeta blinks up at you, eyes wide
he's so goddamn hard rn
"Yes... Yes ma'am."
"Thank you." You hiss back and get off of him and go back to the kitchen to prepare his soup
he rubs one out while you're gone
He becomes a stage five clinger when he's sick
He whines if you're gone for too long, or after he wakes up from a lengthy nap and feels lonely
With that in mind, you tend to stay in bed with him. He likes to snuggle his head on your lap and wrap his arms around your torso while he snoozes
You run your fingers through his hair and usually watch a show while you cuddle your sick husband
He's adorable when he sleeps, occasionally adjusting and squeezing you tight, rubbing his face into your tummy before settling down again
He doesn't know why he gets so many sweet kisses when he does wake up, all groggy and confused about why he dreamt of riding Space Mountain with Goku
But he's certainly not complaining about the kisses
When Vegeta starts to feel better is when he starts to relish in being taken care of
He'll welcome all of his meals in bed and enjoy you giving him baths, and in general show his spoiled prince side
It gets to the point where you know he's all better, but the damn man is taking too much joy from being spoiled and pampered like he (in his mind, anyway) deserved
And when he gets to that stage, all you have to do is smirk at him and say one sentence
"Goku's gotten even stronger, I've heard."
That gets him off his ass and out the house again in no time
Bonus- Vegeta Taking Care of You Headcanons
You usually end up catching whatever Vegeta was sick with once he's gotten better
He's definitely not as good as you are at being a caretaker, but he still tries
He doesn't say it much, but he's grateful to have you around for when he's at a low
He does his best to mimic the things you did for him
He's a terrible cook though, so he goes out to various restaurants for takeout while you're unable to cook, otherwise you'll both starve or die in a house fire
He'll draw up baths for you and bridal carries you to the tub, gently stripping you down and setting you into the warm water
You hum softly and relish each stroke of the washcloth that he runs over your body
"Thank you, 'Geta." You whisper
"I wouldn't be much of a mate if I didn't take care of you."
He holds you to his chest and watches tv, your face in his neck while you take naps
He'll kiss your forehead every now and then and pull you just a little tighter to him
He's certainly thankful you're not as much of a brat as he is when he's sick
He usually ends up reflecting on how much you must love him to be able to put up with him, sick or not
"Yeah, well... I love you too, y'know." He murmurs. "If there's anyone in this world who's gonna take care of you, it's gonna be me."
You snuggle up just a bit closer, eyes still closed. "My Vegeta..."
"All yours, princess."

Dragon Ball Daima: Oops! All Babies
Tumblr media
I think the word is already out on this thing. Turns out all the rumors about a new Dragon Ball anime featuring a de-aged Goku were mostly true. But it's not "Dragon Ball Magic", it's "Dragon Ball Daima". And while the Supreme Kai is in the trailer, so are a lot of other characters, so it remains to be seen if he's in the lead like the "Magic" rumors had suggested. As far as the name goes, "Daima" is apparently a word Toriyama made up, so "Magic" may have been a best-guess attempt to translate it into English, or maybe it was a working title used behind the scenes, sort of like how they called "Return of the Jedi" by the name "Blue Harvest" during production.
Anyway, the trailer features lots of characters being turned into small children, not just Goku. Some characters are unaccounted for, most notably Gohan. I'm not sure how to interpret this. It could mean he's not in the show at all, and he was unaffected by whatever caused this. But my guess is that they only had so much footage they could put in the trailer, and someone decided Kid Gohan wasn't very helpful from a promotional standpoint. I mean, we saw a lot of Kid Gohan in DBZ. Showing a Kid Gohan in Daima might have led to confusion about the show's continuity.
I'm not... particularly interested in the adults-turned-to-kids gimmick. I don't hate it, but it doesn't mean much to me. The characters look adorable, and that's great, but it's not exactly groundbreaking.
What does interest me is the message from Akira Toriyama at the panel where they unveiled the trailer. I like it because it gives me some assurance that Daima won't fall into the same pitfalls as GT. Let's discuss.
A transcript, first, in case you couldn't read the image at the top of the post:
Hello. I’m Akira Toriyama.
I’m currently working on a new Dragon Ball. The Title is “Dragon Ball DAIMA”.
“DAIMA” is a made-up term, which in Japanese characters would be “大魔” or in English would be something like “Evil.”
Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small. In order to fix things, they’ll head off to a new world! It’s a grand adventure with intense action in an unknown and mysterious world.
Since Goku has to make up for his petite size, he uses his Nyoibo (Power Pole) to fight, something not seen in a long time.
I came up with the story and settings, as well as a lot of the designs. I’m actually putting a lot more into this than usual!
Things will unfold that close in on the mysteries of the Dragon Ball world. Hope you enjoy these different-from-usual battles that are cute and powerful!!
— AKIRA TORIYAMA
All that really matters here is the part where he says why the characters get turned into kids. "Due to a conspiracy, Goku and his friends are turned small. In order to fix things..."
I spent like two months this year complaining about Dragon Ball GT, and pointing out all its various flaws and shortcomings, and here Toriyama sums it all up without even really talking about GT at all. The big problem with GT was not that they turned Goku into a child. The problem was that they turned Goku into a child and then did nothing about it.
I know a lot of fans like GT, but that isn't the point. The point is that when Goku turns into a kid in the first episode, it's presented like a big problem, an obstacle the hero must overcome. The implication is that Goku has to go on a quest to restore himself to normal. Except that's not the problem. The Black Star Dragon Balls are the problem, and Goku can't even think about using them to turn himself back, because they'll destroy the Earth.
So the viewer might be led to assume that the show is actually about Goku learning to adapt to this second childhood. Well, no, because he very quickly decides that it doesn't matter much to him. The only real drawback to his kid body is that for some reason he can't teleport or use Super Saiyan 3. But then he discovers Super Saiyan 4, which can teleport and it's stronger and stabler than SSJ3, so yeah he's arguably better off than he was before.
So what was the purpose of making Goku a kid in GT? I don't know, I guess Toei thought he would look cool that way. Well, fair enough, but that's like giving Goku a haircut, or a new pair of shoes. You don't market a show on a mere cosmetic change. GT presented Kid Goku like a problem that would be central to the series, and then did their best to ignore it for the next 63 episodes. And this hurts everything else they tried to do with the show, because all of the villains and aliens and battles ring hollow when they don't have anything to do with Goku being turned into a kid. If GT could have fixed that fundamental problem, it might not have fixed everything I hated about GT, but it would have at least made the show feel more satisfying to watch.
What I'm driving at here is that Toriyama understands that you can't just de-age your characters for no reason. There has to be a plot-driven reason behind it, or it's just a cheap gimmick. And there is a reason in Daima. There's a conspiracy, and somehow it led to Goku and the gang getting turned into kids. This isn't just Emperor Pilaf making a stupid wish without thinking. Someone did this on purpose. I don't know why someone would do this. Maybe it's an unintended side effect of some other action, but it's still a deliberate action that will set the plot into motion.
And this version of Goku may not care about being de-aged, just like the GT Goku didn't care, but Daima Goku is still going to do something about it. We know this because "In order to fix things, they’ll head off to a new world!" The conspiracy is a problem to be solved, and Goku's going to go to this "new world" to solve it.
This is important. I can't stress it enough. This is why Akira Toriyama is so good at what he does. I'm not saying he's flawless, but most of the criticisms I see leveled at Toriyama don't hold water. The guy knows how important it is to connect all the story beats together.
Of course, Daima could still fall flat. I mean, the Zamasu arc was terrible, so maybe this thing will turn out to be a stinker too. But at least I can rest easy knowing this won't just repeat all the mistakes GT made.

May I request a Goku sister reade, where the reader is Goku's half sister they both have the same father but a different mom so he doesn't know her but later on king Kai tells them they need to find her cause she will help them fight since she's strong, so shes half sayian and half another race, her race are very calm and powerful people let's call them (race name) she's really strong and smart also pretty calm :O
Thank you for the request! I'm not sure which arc you wanted this to be so I decided to make it a little earlier on in the series (Near end of SAIYAN SAGA) (and begining of NAMEK SAGA) so the reader still gets to meet goku and gohan pretty young! Hope that's okay!
Siblings (Platonic!) (Goku x Older! Sister! Reader!)
"You said what!?"
Goku suddenly yelled out, not believing the information that was being told before he would be offically wished back to earth to fight the saiyans.
"Yes, believe it or not, you have an older sister. She's incredibly strong."
King kai expected this outburst from him, and responded to it calmly with his hands folded behind his back and looking up at goku like he usually did.
Goku leaned forward and pointed to himself, wanting to make sure king kai was actually reffering to him at the time rather than someone else who just looks like him.
"Not to point out the obvious king kai but- uh- I haven't exactly had the best experiences with family, especially with older siblings."
This seemed to enrage King kai as he frantically moved his arms around in the air as he scolded goku.
"I know that! This ones different though!" Quickly gaining his composure, King Kai turned away from goku and cleared his throat before he spoke again.
"This woman will benefit you as long as she is on your side. Goku you must find her and let her know you're her sibling."
As series as Goku knew he should've taken all of this, he couldn't help but find it strange that this woman didn't go with raditz to find him and why he had to find her instead.
"Okayyy but, How is she gonna know it's me and I'm not lying to her?"
A vein in King Kai's head popped up, and goku just kept talking despite it being slightly obvious that he was over staying his welcome a little. "If anything it sounds like you just want me to walk up to her like raditz and expect her to believe me."
"JUST GO FIND HER!"
That yell was enough to finally get him to take a hint and quit talking. It was honestly better for them all if he just waited for his friends to wish him back.
Hopefully by then, and maybe after the fight with the Saiyans things would be cleared up for him.
-____________________________ 'Okay, let's see...(Name)...(Name)...Are you there?'
A familiar strange voice called you from the sky while you were in the middle of gardening.
Unlike your late father and step family, your planet was not only free from alien overlords, but was also left to it's peaceful ways and calm nature.
The only issue was that you weren't able to travel with your father, seven long years you had known him and he still left you to your uncaring mother who was frightened by your strength and sent you away.
You were a monster in her eyes.
It was great that you had a grandmother to care for you, and accept you despite your weird strength and odd appetite, but even she would leave sooner that you would've liked for her to.
"Oh? Hello there strange man from the sky." You went back to your gardening, this voice was one you had talked to a long time ago. A near death experience that actually encouraged you to take the more relaxed side of your bloodline rather than the Saiyan side. It was actually a good thing you did that.
It helped to clear you mind, so when you did train you also managed to exceed in areas your father possibly couldnt before he had you, and then dissapered.
"Is there news on my father?" 'I'm sorry. Unfortunately he's dead...he's been dead for years now..' After the voice told you that, you simply let out a little 'Oh' and turned back to your gardening. While it looked like you weren't effected by it, you were just ignoring how hurt you actually were.
He wasn't the best father, but while he was there he spent time with you. Trained you, and showed you slight kindness when he could manage it.
It hurt you a little to know that he was dead now.
"Well..was it at least painless?" 'I cannot say, but I can tell you that he didn't leave you alone. You have two more brothers, one evil and dead but the other is alive and well!'
This caught your attention, and caused you to glance up at the sky for a quick second.
You were a little angry before you calmed down and grew curious. He left you and made a whole new life, with new children only to die without possibly sparing you another thought.
It made you wonder if he ever cared enough to remember you after he left at all.
"Well, what does he look like? Who is he?" 'His name is goku. He's the spitting image of your father, and he will arrive in five months from now.'
You hummed before giving a verbal response and saying farewell to eachother. While you were pulling the weeds from your garden, the only thing on your mind was everything you just learned.
He was never in love with your mother, that you knew.
Still. You thought he at least grew to think of you as what you were, his daughter. Only to find out he left for years, never came back, and started a new life.
"The spitting image of my father.." You could feel yourself getting more and more upset as you mumbled and repeated those words from the man in the sly. That sadness mixed with your rage became distracting.
So distracting that you didn't realize your ki had rised, and it started to effect the enviornment around you.
Blowing things out the way, shoving some animals a few feet away from you, throwing little stones around and slightly shifting the purple grass underneath your knees.
"My father.."
"That bastard.." You randomly reached out and ripped something clean out the ground. It felt too deeply rooted to be a weed so it snapped you out of your rage.
When your vision cleared, you saw that it was not a weed, but it was on of your flowers that you had planted there and taken care of for some months.
You gasped, all your rage subsiding as a horrified look took over your face.
"No! My tulips!"
_____________________________________
(Five Months later)
Five months. It had offically been five months since you've last heard from the man in the sky, and five months that you've been training to meet this younger brother of yours.
Maybe you might be directing your newfound resentment towards your father to the wrong person, but even if it turns out that you don't want to fight him.
It was too late to even have second thoughts about what you were doing because today was the day that he was coming around to your planet and meet you.
As you stood there, hands crossed over your stomach, shoulders relaxed, eyes lowered slightly and watching as the giant spaceship land infront of you.
Slightly burning the grass as the flames at the bottom of the ship got closer to the ground before shutting off as a whole. Then there was a door that opened, and from the corners of the ship, you saw someone with large eyes and spikey black hair.
They peaked down at you from the top of ship, and then they jumped down after yelling something inaudible due to how far away from you they were.
When he landed infront of you, and you got a good look at him you could feel yourself getting upset all over again.
He really was the spitting image of your father.
"Hey! I'm Goku! You must be my sister, right?"
He introduced himself, and pointed at you as he slowly approached.
You were cold to him and stepped back, not changing your stance but you did rise your ki slightly, and it caught him off guard.
"I am."
He paused for a moment, and you thought you had him stuck.
Only for him to extend his arms and wrap them around you, picked you up off the ground and just held you there for a bit.
"Good to meet you!"
He said as he put you down and left you a little stunned. He looked like your father, but this man acted absolutely nothing like him! Your father was a cold man. Hardly smiled, held you, hugged you, or even told you he loved and cared for you. Sometime it seemed like he cared for you, but really all you did was train under him.
"Come on! Let's go, we've gotta hurry to Namek!" "Namek? Why Namek? To destroy it?"
You asked as you followed him inside the large ship, and he turned to look at you with a confused look on his face. It made you think that you said something abnormal.
He was a sayain after all, it was in his nature as far as you knew.
"Huh? No, to save my friends! Actually, you've got a nephew there!" "A Nephew?"
You questioned as you walked around the spaceship with him, the doors closing behind you, and the lights coming on after it shut and locked. "Yeah, his name is Gohan, and he's really strong. I'm sure you'll like him!"
He smiled as he talked about his son, and went on to tell you about earth. His human wife, and all his friends. Apparently he even died once and came back.
You would question that logic later.
As he went on to talk about everything, to keep you updated on everything and everyone you'd be meeting, fighting and possibly saving with how rough Namek sounds.
"What about you? King Kai didn't tell me everything about you, so I wanna know!" You were shocked that he asked, but answered him none the less.
You told it just how Goku told his, from the start to the very end. Not every last detail, but you told him enough so he had an idea as to what you might've went through.
After you finished, he was sympathetic, and even apologized. It caught you off guard and made you look at him odd. He was frowing and his eyebrows were furrowed.
Goku wasn't rude at all, actually now that you were talking to him it seemed like your feelings of resentment, anger, and sadness completely dissapered.
He man that stood before you was absoluetly nothing like your father
You started laughing, and he looked at you as you continued to laugh. It wasn't until he asked you if something he said was funny that you finally stopped long enough to answer.
"You may look like our father, but you're nothing like him."
"Is..that a good thing?"
"It's a great thing Goku. If anything, that raditz fellow is more like our father than you." "Oh thats good! Also- Not good- was our dad evil?"
Sorry for the long wait!
