Benjamin Sisko is an amazing man, but it's still hilarious that so many people to fixate on him as their personal rival.
Dukat, Eddington, and Solok are the most notable three. And all three all wind up completely changing their personalities to revolve around one-upping Sisko and he winds up beating them anyway.
After Dukat destroys his career, he re-fashions himself into what is essentially the Emissary of the Pah-Wraiths. He's always been fixated on Sisko to some degree, but the final season takes it up to eleven.
Eddington becomes fed up with his career and projects his frustrations on to Sisko, re-imagining their relationship to be one where he's the noble criminal and Sisko the evil, relentless enforcer. But reality was never going to conform to his imaginings.
Solok, the Vulcan who was so obsessed with one-upping Sisko that he also developed an obsession with baseball. He drags his crew into it. He taunts Ben with it, makes things personal in a way the other two can't. In part because Solok is so incredibly petty. The other two are so grandiose in their methods, but Solok takes the petty route every time.

"Dad" Dan au
(Pov I haven't read Agit yet) ( I don't mind spoilers though)
I don't think we in the dpxdc fandom play with the canon information that Dark Danny is a product of Danny's ghost half fusing with with Plasmius.
Yeah, he's completely down with mass murder and is really sadistic in the episode but that's not as fun to play with in this context.
He's still merged with Vlad and I'd like to have that bleed into him a bit more than the "oh he's so evil," but him being obsessed with his own Mom like Vlad is a level of weird I'm not willing to touch with a fifty foot pole.
I say, let him have Vlad's obsession with making Danny his son. It's hilarious! Imagine being obsessed with making your past self your son! Dan had no qualms with directly trying to murder the past version of his family. But I love the idea of him first seeing his past self in all his awkward half-ghost glory an obsession kicks into gear with a fury!
Dan hating his own parents with a passion because they're uh, well... His parents. And that stops him from being his own parent! It's so stupid. Dan judging every single one their parenting decisions. All while he himself is still morally detestable.
It's great! Still can't decide if he's just stalking the family like a creep. Or he pretended to be redeemed and Danny with Jazz gaslit their parents into believing they have an older sibling ghosts his from them.
Onto the dpxdc part of this!
Now Dan is just looking for the opportunity to whisk Danny away. Jack and Maddie are interfering with his obsession without even trying to! He'll be trying to feed the kid something edible and they'll be ectoplasm samples in the fridge! Ghost hunting equipment in the open when they know it has a tendency to misfire around their son! Dan doesn't care if they really love Danny. There are harpoons pointed at his kid! Those idiots were one misstep away from accidentally killing their child a second time and Dan isn't having it!
Dan yoinks Danny and fucking books it into the ghost zone. Danny clearly wouldn't be happy with this development (betrayal or surprise you choose!) And Dan is trying his best to get Danny to co-operate. Either with specter deflectors or a deal with Desiree. But Danny's stuck with the guy.
I'm taking advantage of the fact that the Dc universe has absolutely obliterated it's multiverse making pretty much impossible for normal ghosts and humans to navigate. Dan flees with Danny to an iteration of the Dc universe and pokes around for a place to settle.
Metropolis's hero was an annoying goodie two shoes and he'd kill this "lex Luthor" the moment he heard the fucker speak. Plus, both rogues and hero's threw cars like baseballs.
Gotham was flooded with crime but their rouges were just people. Their heroes were just people. Crazy people sure, but Dan could kill them if they stepped out of line.
If only the self proclaimed hero's would stop trying to make grabs at his kid.

Prison For Life pt. 2
Paring: Walter Marshall x Hispanic/Latina Reader
Summary: more of Walter and Y/N’s relationship
A/N: there are probably many spelling mistakes
Tumblr media
I'm no damsel in distress, no But I like assertiveness, so
Y/N and Walter have been dating for almost a year now and she was sleeping over at Walter's house. It was the middle of the night and Y/N woke to get a drink of water when she heard a noise that definitely did not come from her. She walked to Walter's side of the bed and started shaking him awake.
"Guapo, guapo, wake up." Y/N whispered as she shook him.
"Mm, baby girl, its late, we'll play later." Walter said, snuggling up to the bed and Y/N slapped his shoulder.
"No seas payaso, I heard something coming from downstairs, I’m gonna check.” Y/N said. She grabbed the hockey stick that Walter keeps in the closet but Walter got up from bed and took the hockey stick out of her hand. He rubbed his eyes, trying to wake up.
“Darling, I’ll go check downstairs. Relax, stay calm, I’ll be back.” Walter kissed her forehead and he walked downstairs to check where the noise was coming from to see his daughter raiding his fridge. “Faye? What are you doing her? I thought you were supposed to be with your mom.”
“I was. But then I went to this party and your house is closer. What is this?” Faye asks Walter, holding up a Tupperware full of food Y/N cooked.
“It’s lomo saltado.” Walter said, Faye shrugs her shoulders and starts beating up the food in the microwave “Does your mom know you’re here?” Walter asked.
“I called her before getting an Uber here, I am not that irresponsible, father. Is she upstairs?” Faye asked.
“Yes, she woke me up because of the noise she heard downstairs.” Walter said.
“Sorry, it’s hard to raid a refrigerator quietly when there is so much Tupperware, when does she find the time to cook?” Faye asked. She took out the food from the microwave and started eating it. “It’s really good, I’m glad you stopped eating those frozen dinners.”
“Just wash it when you’re done, do you need me to set up the guest bedroom?” Walter asked.
“I can set it up myself, dad. Go with your girlfriend, get some sleep, love you.” Faye said, hugging Walter.
“Love you too, don’t stay up too late.” Walter said, kissing her forehead and went upstairs. He entered his bedroom and saw Y/N in bed. “Everything is fine, it was just Faye.” Walter gets under the covers.
“Thank you for checking.” Y/N said.
“I’ll always check downstairs for strange noises, either with a hockey stick, baseball bat, or my gun.” Walter said, he wrapped his arm around Y/N.
“Do you even play hockey or baseball?” Y/N asked.
“It’s Minnesota, the police department has hockey games with the fire department.” Walter said and Y/N laughed.
“Oh, que funny, that’s hilarious. Okay, Goodnight, oso gruñón, i love you.” Y/N gave Walter a kiss.
“You did not just call me ‘grumpy bear’, baby girl.” Walter said.
“I’m sleeping, can’t hear you.” Y/N said and Walter laughed to himself and just spooned her, falling asleep peacefully.
Wrap your arm around me babe And say that you’ll keep me safe
Walter was making popcorn while Y/N was on the couch with a blanket over her, they were watching a scary movie, 16 months of dating.
"Walter, te lo juro juradito if you don't get your ass back here." Y/N started
"Mi vida, the popcorn is almost done." Walter said,
"Why the hell are we watching a horror movie?" Y/N asked.
"I distinctly remember you saying that you could handle a scary movie, I told you that we could watch one of those romcoms that you like, but you insisted. So we are watching a horror movie because of you. Besides, aren't you a big fan of Supernatural? Horror movies should be no problem." Walter said, pouring the popcorn into a big bowl.
"Supernatural is different, it stops being scary after season 5, honeslty. Most of the episodes are about monsters and demons, the scariest epsiodes are when it was humans behind the killings. Also, there was a fucking crossover with Scooby Doo, not scary, now sit, I don't like where this is going." Y/N said
Walter leaves the kitchen and sits beside Y/N, immediately wrapping his arm around her, pulling her to snugglie into him, which she does gladly. There was a jumpscare and Y/N hid inthe crook of his neck. Walter chuckled, rubbing her back attempting to soothe her. Walter the leaned down to whisper in her ear.
"It is just a movie, I'll always be here to keep you safe, no matter what." Walter kissed the top of her head and changed the movie. "You clearly need to watch 'Confessions of a Shopaholic' after that." Walter said and Y/N perked up.
"I love Hugh Dancy! He was so cute in that movie, but he will always be prince Charmont to me." Y/N said.
"Is he the reason why you like British guys?" Walter asked,
"Yes, yes he is." Y/N said.
"I need to send him thank you letter, maybe a gift, lets watch the movie." Walter said, getting comfortable again with his arm wrapped around Y/N.
I know it's bad to fantasize About robbers and bad guys But if he were there to save the day, ha Think I'd let that man marry me
Walter was cooking in Y/N’s apartment and shewas sipping wine, watching him, a year and a half into the relationship.
"Oso, are you sure you don't want help?" Y/N asked.
"I'm fine, hermosa, I really want to get this recipe right, I don't want you to have to do all the cooking." Walter said.
"Thats sweet, Oso." Y/N said, she walked over to where he was standing and kissed his cheek. She went back to where she was and like most women do, she asked a hypothetical question. "Hey Oso, what would you do of someone broke into the house?"
"What?" Walter turned away from the stove, looking at Y/N
"If we were home and someone broke into the house to try and rob us or kidnap me, or whatever, what would you do?" Y/N asked.
"Why are you asking?" Walter said.
"I dont know, curiousity, boredom, just answer the question."
"If they try to rob us, I'll put you behind me and tell you to call 911 or text Harper so he could send squad cars immediately. I'll keep you out of harm's way. If they try to kidnap you, I am putting my fight training and gun to use, because anyone who lays a finger on your head, theirs would be on the ground next." Walter said.
"That was such an amazing answer." Y/N said.
"What can I say? I am very protective." Walter said and he turned away so he could focus on the sauce.
I know I can protect myself (Ah) But when you do it for me, it's hot as hell (Ah) You got my heart, you know me too well (Ah) Think I'd even send you love letters in jail (Ah)
Y/N was at the bar drinking with her friends to celebrate Monica's promotion.
“Hey, I think I'm gonna call it a night. ” Y/N commented.
“Of course you are! If i had a man like yours, I would be dying to go home and let him do whatever he wanted to me.” Y/N's bestie. Isabela slurred, the other girls laughed.
"Yes! Girl, you gotta tell me something, how is he in bed? How BIG is he?" Monica asked.
"Okay I'm not answering that." Y/N said, walking away so she could call Walter.
"He has to be amazing and pretty big, I've seen the way she walks after she spends a night with Walter." Another friend, Tori, said. Y/N shook her head giggling before calling Walter. It took two rings for him to pick up.
"Hey baby girl, how's your night out with your friends?" Walter asked as he was making a coffee.
“Hey Oso, my night is good, my friends are a little tipsy, I'm spent though, can you pick me up?” Y/N answered, folding the laundry.
“Sure thing, baby girl, let me just coat, which bar are you at again?” Walter asked as he put on his coat and got his keys.
“You know the bar that's by the ice cream shop where we had our first date?” Y/N asked, sitting at the bar to wait for Walter, Walter smiled at the memory.
“Yeah, I know the one, I'm on my way, baby girl, love you.” Walter said before hanging up the phone, leaving the house and getting into his truck.
Y/N stayed at the bar so Walter doesn't have to look for her but it looks like it was a bad idea because an older man sat next to her.
"How you doin', doll, can I buy you a drink?" he asked her. She could smell the alcohol on his breath.
"I'm fine, but I don't accept that drink, thank you though." Y/N said, trying to be polite and avoid confrontation.
"Oh come on, whats the matter? A sexy woman like you alone in a bar amd you're not accepting my drink?" the man asked.
"I am not alone and i have a boyfriend." Y/N said, again rejecting the man.
"Every woman says that." The man said and Y/N had enough so she got up from the chair and tried to walk away when the man grabbed her wrist, thats when Y/N's friends spotted her and went over to the bar. The one time Y/N doesn't bring her knife, what a nightmare.
"Let go of our friend right now." Monica said.
"Tori, go get security." Isabela said. Tori did as she asked. Walter then entered the bar and spotted that his baby girl was in a situation.
"Your friend here was being a bitch." the man said.
"She has a boyfriend, now let her go." Monica demanded.
"I don't see him." The man said and thats when Walter appeared next to the women.
"Now you do, what seems to be the problem?" Walter asked. Walter easily towered over the man.
"This cabrón is pissed that i said no to a drink and now he won't let go." Y/N addressed Walter, looking up at him..
"Let go of her sir before we have a real problem." Walter threated. The man let go of Y/N and she went with Monica and Isabela.
"Next time don't let your girl leave the house dressed like a whore, bitch was asking for some attention." That was when Walter said 'fuck being civil' and punched the guy in the face."
"Don't ever speak that way about my girl again or it will be the last thing you do." Walter said over the man on the ground.
Looks like this man wasn't going down easily and he got up, trying to punch Walter but Walter had police training and it became a full blown fight between these two men. When Tori finally got security, he called the police and Walter and the man were put in different holding cells because Walter knew if that dumbass kept running his mouth, Walter was going to spend the night in jail. Y/N came in and posted bail for Walter, an officer walked out to Y/N with Walter and his belongings.
“Since Detective Marshall explained the man had his hands on you and of course him being an officer, this is a warning.” The officer said. "Next time its a cell." He warned Walter.
“Thank you, officer. Vámonos Oso.” Y/N said, holding the door open for Walter so they could leave. Once they’re in the car, no one spoke a word.
“I’m fine, baby girl.” Walter said, breaking the silence. “I’m not hurt at all.” Y/N was still silent. “Listen, I’m sorry i scared you, I lost my temper and I wish you didn’t see that. But he doesn’t get to badmouth you in front of me and walk away with his teeth still intact.”
“Im not scared that you hit him.” Y/N said.
“Then what scared you?” Walter asked.
“It scared me how much I liked you going all protective like that.” Y/N said and Walter paused for a second.
“You’re telling me that me going all caveman on that bastard is attractive to you?” Walter questioned.
“You know I can protect myself, but you are always there to protect me, and I find that very hot. It was very primal in a way.” Y/N said. “And for some reason I like it.”
“But how far is too far?” Walter asked, genuinely curious.
“I’ll tell you this, Walter, if you end up in jail for murdering a guy because you’re defending me or protecting me, I will write you love letters.” Y/N said seriously. Walter out his hand on Y/N’s thigh, rubbing his thumb over it before grabbing her hand and kissed the back of her hand.
I'm a feminist obviously (Oh) But I wouldn't really mind him savin' me (Savin' me) And I know that I'm fine without a man (Without a man) But I think I'd like his protection And God knows that I don't need no one But pretending that I do is kind of fun (Kind of fun) Yeah, I know that I'm fine without a man But I think I'd like his protection (I'd like his protection) I'm just bein' honest, can't change what I like I'll never forget it, he told me one night (Night) "If anybody hurts you, oh I'm goin' to prison for life"
Y/N’s friends were over for hot chocolate and pan dulce and Walter was busy installing a new light in Y/N’s bedroom.
“Hey love, can you get my toolbox? I left it in the living room!” Walter called out.
“Sure thing, Oso.” Y/N said. “I’ll be right back, ladies.” Y/N got the toolbox off the living room table and went to her room where saw saw Walter on a ladder, wearing a gray t-shirt, blue jeans, and his tool belt.
“Thank you baby girl.” He got down from the ladder to kiss her. “Save me a concha please, the chocolate one.”
“Of course, Oso.” Y/N said, she got into the kitchen and her 3 friends stared at her. “What? Like you don’t have husbands doing this stuff?”
“Yeah, we have husbands, but didn’t you tell us that your dad taught you how to fix this stuff so you wouldn’t depend on a man?” Tori said.
“Well I know how to do things but I don’t want to have to, you know? Like can i take my car to the shop? Of coarse I can! Do I want to? No, Walter takes it for me and I don’t get hustled.”
“Love that for you.” Isabela said.
“Yeah, he’s the best, would do anything for me. He’s protective.” Y/N said. “But seriously, don’t eat all the conchas, Walter wants a chocolate one.”
An hour later, the friends left and Walter finished the maintenance in Y/N’s room.
“Ooh yes, a chocolate concha.” Walter said as he sat at the table to eat it.
“Thanks for installing my light.” Y/N said.
“Yeah of course, as long as your with me, apartment maintenance is my job.” Walter said, kissing her.
“Thank you. Quick question; you remember what you said to me a year ago? When you saw my scar?” Y/N asked.
“You mean where I said I would go to prison for life to protect? Of course, and I still mean it, and I’ll always mean it.” Walter did, kissing her again.
The End

i love the new pjo tv show don't get me wrong but i feel like it's missing the like, campiness of the original? that got translated pretty well into the musical but honestly 2-3 lines of witty dialogue per episode isn't really getting the original Ridiculousness of the book across.
like it's been pointed out that they seem to immediately know & recognize every myth they encounter, which is part of it, but like...episode 7 in particular made me sigh a lot because they cut so much of the humor! things like annabeth just immediately training cerberus to stay put and them bald-face lying to Charon that they are all dead, actually, they drowned in a bathtub. Together. it was such a nice like, breather before they get into the Very Serious Underworld Scenes and instead...nope, just more ACTION.
and they took out stuff in other episodes that made the tone lighter-things like percy and annabeth getting grossed out by the mirrors in the tunnel of love ride, the dam snack bar jokes, grover eating cans, them playing around in the lotus hotel, etc. i feel like half the fun of the original books was that, at any given conflict, the main characters were either going to sword fight their way out or completely bullshit their way out in the most convoluted ridiculous way possible. which was hilarious and also suspenseful-is percy going to pick up riptide, or is he going to start talking baseball? and them giving impassioned dialogue all the time instead of goofing around a bit just weighs down the whole tone of the show.
i feel like the show is very action-adventure whereas the original book was more of an adventure romp. i also feel like with the new heaviness that's come with multiple POVs (like seeing percy and sally's backstory) the show would really benefit from like, sad shot of sally and poseidon talking then BOOM cut to percy complaining about getting sand on his favorite pair of jeans while on the beach with ares. or something else.

A few more takes on the Dragon Ball actors AU:
- In an interview both Goku and Piccolo actors stated how much they loved filming the car license episode. Vegeta had the idea for the plot of that filler and it was the first episode to be directed by a member of the cast (him).
Tumblr media
- All the plushies that Videl and Gohan had gifted to Piccolo are actually the ones the fans send to the actor, the production thought that it would be a nice touch to include them in the movie.
Tumblr media
- The actors that play Trunks (baby-kid) and Future Trunks in DBZ and DBS are brothers in real life.
Tumblr media
- Mr. Satan actor was a real martial artist in his youth. Sometimes he gathers the younger members of the cast and teaches them some techniques to make their moves more believable.
Tumblr media
- Bra actress is actually Bulma's daughter (where else would you find a baby with blue hair?).
Tumblr media
- Beerus actor tends to hide food in the sets, at first his character wasn't supposed to be so much of a food lover but the writers included this trait to the plot since they found it hilarious.
Tumblr media
- Yamcha actor took lessons with real NPB (japanese baseball league) players to learn how to play for the show, he is surprisingly good.
Tumblr media
- Bulma and Vegeta actors are very good friends and while they are always asked in interviews about their true relationship irl, the two of them never deny or confirm anything. The fans are convinced that they had f*cked at least once in the past.
Tumblr media
- During DB and DBZ Chaoz was a puppet and many members of the cast said that they used to be scared of it. Now in BDS he is added with CGI.
Tumblr media
- Frieza actor is an open supporter and activist for the LGBTQ+ community, they're always seen at the japanese Pride Parade and they're very vocal about how their character is genderless.

My top 10 favorite South Park episodes, no one asked but here we go
10. With Apologies to Jesse Jackson
Tumblr media
This is a controversial episode to put here because of how offensive it is, and truthfully, I didn't care too much for the A plot. But the B-plot makes up for it. Watching Cartman and a Midget fight to Get Down with the Sickness is so hilariously absurd.
9. You're Getting Old/Ass Burgers
Tumblr media
This is the second/third episode I remember watching before I got into the show. I included them both in one spot because Ass Burgers is a continuation of You're Getting Old, but each have their own separate charm. I definitely shed a tear when Stan moved out to Fleetwood Mac's Landslide and split my sides laughing as Kyle yelled at Cartman for sticking the burgers up his ass. I also heavily relate to Stan's meltdown in class in Ass Burgers, because that's real emotion. An amazing storyline overall.
8. Make Love, Not Warcraft
Tumblr media
I mentioned that the previous two episodes were some of my first episodes, but not THE first episode. That title goes to this episode. When I was born, my brother was 15, and as I grew up, I often watched him play World of Warcraft. So this episode is very nostalgic to me, not just because him and I watched it but because as someone who plays WOW nowadays (very inconsistently), it's so nostalgic to see how much has changed.
7. The Losing Edge
Tumblr media
This is just a classic episode. The boys don't want to participate in baseball and try to get out of it by losing, but the other teams have the same idea. I think we all know who the real star of the episode is: Randy. I thought this was America!
6. Trapped in the Closet
Tumblr media
Subtlety is completely ignored in this episode. As Stan is praised as the reincarnation of L. Ron Hubbard, his comments about Tom Cruise send him literally into the closet. I think my favorite bit in the episode is R. Kelly's Trapped in the Closet verses, specifically when he pulls out a gun in Stan's room and everyone in the hallway runs away.
5. Major Boobage
Tumblr media
This episode is... beautiful. The animation is impressive, and the story is hilarious as well. Kenny and Gerald cheesing and then getting into a fight, Cartman reliving the Holocaust with the cats, and the funny ass press conference given just solidify this episode as legendary.
4. Le Petit Tourette
Tumblr media
This episode introduced my favorite one-off character, Thomas. But even more than that, it gave us a great story and a chance for us to see Cartman's plan blow up in his face. While it ultimately never came to fruition due to Kyle's actions, it's satisfying to know that he definitely revealed a deep secret or two in exchange for almost slandering minority groups on national TV.
3. Follow That Egg
Tumblr media
I have vague memories of watching this episode as a kid, but I don't consider it as one of my firsts because I could only really recall them running through the crowd trying to save their grade. But it's a fantastic episode. Ms. Garrison's attempts to stop gay marriage from being legalized, to Stan's comical bitterness towards Kyle and Wendy, it all comes together and compliments each other well.
2. D-Yikes!
Tumblr media
I didn't expect to get so personal on a South Park top 10 list, but it's the honest truth. South Park became a major comfort for me after my assault. And this was the first episode I watched that made me burst out laughing since the attack; Ms. Garrison screaming "scissor me timbers!" has got to be one of the funniest lines in the show's history. And overall, it's just a fun episode to watch.
1. Guitar Queero
Tumblr media
This is an underrated masterpiece of an episode that more people should watch. The plot of the episode feels so fluid, and everything about it makes sense to me. The rise to stardom, falling to drugs (well, video games about drugs), losing it all and returning to give it one final shot just encompasses what South Park can really do when given the right tools. Maybe I'm biased because Season 11 is my favorite season, but something about this episode just really scratches my brain.
Anyways, that's my list! Thanks all for reading.

Happy Saturday Fandom :) Wanted to post links to the last few I know they came over the holidays in case anyone missed them. The master list has also been updated. 4x22 , 5x01, 5x02
We’ve reached our yearning era and I’m here for it. This one may not have a ton but it’s just enough that at we were all dying for more. I was so excited to be an era where very aware of their feelings but couldn’t be together yet. Good stuff. Let us proceed shall we?
5x03-Dye Hard
Tumblr media
We jump one month into the future. Because Lucy has gone to UC school. So our couple has been apart for some time at this point. Making that longing extra intense. Lucy arrives home to a surprise party of sorts. She's just returning home from UC school. Tamara and Chris welcome her back with mustaches. I love how excited she is Lucy is back. Always take some cute hugs with them. She tells Lucy the she has to head to school but wants to hear all about it tonight. I love them so much.
Tumblr media
Leaves us just the clown and Lucy. Bleh. She asks him how he’s doing? Says he’s doing ok. Typing is still hard but he’s glad to be back at work. Was going crazy on the couch. Tells her there’s something else that’s been helping him more. An online group trying to hunt Rosalind. Kinda like the one she was apart of for Aaron’s case back in 4x16. Lucy doesn’t look excited about this idea. He says they contacted him few weeks ago. They call themselves Dye Hards.
Hence the name of the episode. That their research is actually impressive. They compile all their credible tips in an encrypted document. Called the ‘mother doc.’ Lucy’s face is screaming how much she hates all this. But instead of reading her like he should he presses her further. Because it’s Chris…never respects any boundaries she’s putting up but sure man keep going. Force her to read about the one person who sets her PTSD off like no other.
Just so you can have some peace of mind…grumble….Dislike him so very much. Lucy tells him how not healthy this is. (It really isn’t…) That she’s just a patrol officer. He whines about how the task force is ignoring him. Of course they are ya putz. It's why he’s dragging her into this. I hate this very much. Lucy gives in and says she’ll give his doc a look. That good ole guilt driving her decisions about him some more. Smh.
Tumblr media
Roll call starts out with Grey congratulating Lucy. She successfully passed UC school. Telling everyone that is no small feat. Look at Tim ever the proud husband. That look alone says everything you need to know about her crushing it. The soft looks in his eyes. That soft gaze he only reserves for her. *sigh* Oh pining era you are lovely.
Lucy trying to contain her emotions about all of it. Grey calling her out and congratulating her. Tim looking at her like she hung the moon and stars. Couldn’t be more telling if he tried. She can’t even look at him. Just messes with her thermos. Lucy not really knowing how to react to the attention. Especially Tim’s…She just nods and hopes they move on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aaron and Lucy come out of roll call together. Lucy is congratulating him on making P2. Lucy also commends him on being a good aide for Tim. Aaron is very aware of Tim and Lucy. Maybe not everything but enough to offer stepping back. Then asks Lucy if Tim said he’s doing a good job? Lucy says no…that she made that last part up LMAO
Reminds me of 1x02 when Wrigley did the same to her. Thinking she got praise from Tim early on. Only to be crushed by the fact that he hadn't...Yeah you gotta really earn that Tim Bradford praise Aaron lol His reaction to that fake news is hilarious. Lucy can't lie and has to let him know no such praise has happened. Sorry my man.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lucy follows it up with he hasn’t replaced him yet LOL I mean that’s a lot coming from Tim. If he wasn't happy he would've traded him away like baseball card. Lucy adding on 'So he’s…happy.' As happy as one could be without his person by his side sure. This next bit it sticks in her throat a bit as she says it.
Telling him he should stick with him. Obviously killing her to be to be apart from him. To pass up taking being his aide once again. But she wants to keep the distance up. For the same reasons as 5x02. Hurts too much to be around him when she can’t be with him. The pining era is so good for these moments. Aaron asks if she’s sure? Because she doesn't seem sure...
Tumblr media
Only they could have such immense chemistry with an intense stare. One that is across the room from each other BTW. The longing is palpable af. Angsty goodness right here. Also those are some smoldering bedroom eyes for Lucy. My god idk how she could function after him looking at her that way. Would make me hot under the collar good god. That man wants her back in his shop. But we know that isn’t happening anytime soon.
So much pining and tension with just one look good lord. His stare does end up affecting her. Her breath hitches a little when they make eye contact. She stammers a little in her advice to Aaron. I love how they find each other those across a room. That magnetic pull only they understand. It’s automatic no matter what’s going on. Lucy rambling on about needing some quiet time anyways..You know for her next steps in her career...
Tumblr media
More like Tim thinking time. Let’s be real. I love how the entire time she’s just staring at Tim. Spending most of their conversation just staring right back. Even when he’s looked down. She misses him so much. That is very evident in this moment. When she finally breaks off her longing she notices Aaron looking at his phone ha Not even paying attention to her anymore. Making a sassy comment that he hasn't even heard a word she's said. He apologizes and says he has to deal with something personal.
Tumblr media
We start out with Tim and Aaron. Tim feeling extra surly after seeing Lucy. Much worse getting to be that close and not really getting to see her. So Aaron is on thin ice when Tim sees him buried in his phone. He apologizes and says he’s having person problem. Tim saying this is a ‘personal life free zone.’ Ha! Not since Lucy Chen entered your life it isn’t…
Aaron tells him it could derail his career. Tim sighs and that little bit of Lucy’s influence comes out. He asks him what it is? Aaron going on about a dating site. Using a thirst trap LOL Tim’s reaction is too damn funny. ‘I wish I didn’t…’ Look at our softie helping Aaron with his problem.
He goes on to tell Tim he was cat-fished and now the dude is blackmailing him. Tim is confused saying he thought the pic didn’t show anything? We find out this guy has photoshopped something worse. He shows it to Tim and I’m dying. ‘Could’ve been worse…At least he was generous. LMAO Oh Timothy I love you so.
Tumblr media
We catch Lucy riding solo. She sees a homeless man go into an abandoned building. Calls it in saying she going to go look for squatters. She calls back in after she’s finds nothing. Saying she is Code 4. That is before she notices a freezer open with wallets in it. The man she followed in traps her in the old walk in freezer. Thankfully it’s out of commission. Unfortunately it blocks her radio signal. Leaving her trapped there with no one to tell she is….You can tell she wants to shout a whole lot of expletives above ha
Tumblr media
Aaron gets contacted by his catfish. He wants a PS5 and delivered to his apt. Tim is so funny in this scene. Saying oh good he’s a dumbass LOL Giving up his location and needing something they can obtain on the way. Aaron doesn’t want to give in but Tim makes a good point about the photo. It’ll be in police evidence and he doesn’t want that ha. Aaron says good thing he has a gamer connection in K-Town. Tim shaking his head not shocked in the least about this. Of course he does...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Poor Lucy tries once again to get ahold of dispatch but to no avail. She has to try and talk her anxiety down. I would be doing the same thing to try and relax. Telling herself that at some point there will be a welfare check. (Well Tim will for sure…) She can’t do anything until that point. So she pulls out her phone and starts reading that mother doc the clown sent. Lucy is too funny as she reads these messages.
I love her talking to the smiley face on the freezer LOL She is so adorable I cannot stand it. Then she stumbles upon someone making sense. As she reads it aloud something clicks in her brain. A saying Rosalind told Nolan a long time ago. The 5 star meal comment. Lucy starts to get restless again. Jumps up and starts banging on the door for help again.
Tumblr media
They show up to the address and it’s a teenager..he just wanted a PS5. I love how stern and authoritative Tim is with this kid. Saying bad behavior doesn’t get rewarded. Mmm no it doesn’t. Idk why that does it for me with Tim but it does. It’s yum tum city and I am a resident. They get the kid to delete the photo and take down the profile. He says they suck when Tim takes the PS5. Cracks me up he keeps it for himself. I love this man so very much haha
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We return to the shop and Tim’s Lucy radar is going off. Aaron’s going on about the kid still but Tim’s mind is elsewhere. He has Lucy on his brain. Has that panicked look he reserves only for her going on. He asks Aaron the last time he heard Chen on the radio? He replies he can’t remember…maybe like hour or two ago? Let me start with I adore him waiting to hear her voice on the radio. Then noticing he hasn't in awhile.
How he keeps track of not hearing from her in some time. Tim knows she’s solo today. You know that man was subconsciously keeping track of her in the back of his mind. Some serious married vibes here my love. This definitely doesn’t line up with the 'moving on’ you were talking bout in 5x02. When Aaron says least 2 hours worried Tim arrives. He’s freaking out something has happened to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m sure he’s also thinking if she was riding with him this wouldn’t be happening. But she isn’t…Tim contacts dispatch about her. They say it’s been over two hours. Angry/protective Tim also joins the party. Welcome sir nice to see you. Telling dispatch they’re gonna talk about that later. Phew lord. You know that man is going to destroy dispatch over this. Hell is going to rain down on them for not keeping track of her. For now he just wants her location to check on her. Needs to get his worried husband portion to settle first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once they’ve arrived he calls out her name a couple times. Lucy finally hears him and bangs on the door. Then comes a DELICIOUS shot of his arms/forearms. My god it’s like they’re trying to make me a puddle. The definition in his arms as he pulls that door free.* fans self* god that man is in shape. Mmm Legit drooling as he pulls on that door. Forearm porn AND biceps shot. I’m a happy girl. Like hot damn that is a thirst trap of a shot above.
Tumblr media
He gets the door to finally pop open. Also nice thigh/bootie shot of him as well. I'm not mad about it. Asking her how she is? So very worried about her. Unfortunately Lucy is not in the frame of mind to receive it. Just tells him she has a lead on Rosalind. Not the response he was expecting…He asks 'What?' anyways. She tells them about the message boards Chris has been on. Filled with arm chair detectives. Tim asks her if they found her? She says no she thinks one of them is her.
Tumblr media
The Feds get brought in cause Chris’s dumbass has been talking to her. Feeding her stuff about him and the investigation going on. Because well it's Chris. Can’t read Lucy when she’s being obvious af so why would he notice this? Lucy is sweet and tells him he didn’t know. I on the other hand am like dumbass LOL He asks if he should set up a meet. Yes Chris, she’s a highly intelligent psychopath she wouldn’t see through that at all…
Garza saying Cyber crimes is now involved. They’re going to try and track her through her IP address if possible. Chris is feeling like the dummy he is. He leaves the meeting upset. I’m a bad person enjoying this lmao I mean Tim would’ve been Lucy’s real target but he was in Vegas with her. She knows that’s her fierce protector. So he was the next I was gonna say best thing but that’s not true. But closest thing that would rattle her.
Tumblr media
Tim and Aaron arrive at the station and there is posters everywhere. Everyone is laughing. Of course Smitty has them and is glowing over it. I mean Tim did pick Nolan over him for union president. So of course he is enjoying this. It's of Tim photoshopped naked with a cupcake covering him up OMG. Tim is seeing red. I don’t blame him. Just when they thought their catfish was over he pulls this. Clearly pissed at Tim for taking the PS5 and lecturing him.
Tumblr media
They arrive at Pavi’s house with the felony papers. Tim saying he can file these today. Or he could use his skills for good. James needs someone to teach computer literacy at the center. That if is does this twice a week he’ll shred them. Otherwise he has 18 months to file these. He’s a little snot and throws Tim’s words about electronics back at him. Tim says he’s lucky Aaron believes in second chances. His mom calls him and he says to text him the details. I love Tim leaving Aaron hanging for his fist bump LMFAO. He does tell him they did good though so that’s something. Aaron has to fist bump himself ha.
Tumblr media
Lucy gets to join the task force with the FBI. They’re headed to Seattle where the IP was traced. Lucy looks like an absolute bad ass in OP gear. A determined look on her face. They make it inside and find two bodies…sadly the homeowners. Psycho worked out of their house and just left their bodies there as she did. She is a one sick cookie. Lucy sees her message written in blood on the wall. She is long gone.
Not a ton in this one but what we did get was real good. Plus I always enjoy Tim/Aaron time they have a good dynamic. Fun to watch them together.
~~~
Side notes-non Chenford
Intro of Celina Juarez. I wasn’t sure about her at first but ended up adoring her. Just like Aaron. Good job writers haha
Did love Tim tearing Nolan a new one about Celina bad stop. Was sexy af. Maybe shouldn’t have been a turn on but it was LOL
Thank you as always to you lovely readers. Wouldn’t be here without your likes/comments and reblogs ❤️ see you in 5x04 :)
So, the Knuckles Show...
It was a hassle to attempt and find the show somewhere else (pirate if you wanna watch), and also I had a lot going on that day, BUT!
I have finally finished all six episodes of Knuckles, and my final thoughts...!
...It was pretty good.
Honestly, nothing to ground-breaking and outstanding but it was fantastic and such a lovely treat to hardcore Knuckles fans. Like me lol. (It may not look like it, but TRUST ME THIS SHOW TURNED ME INTO A HARDCORE KNUCKLES FAN.)
All of my thoughts are under the cut, but to make a long story short, I really enjoyed it! (Forgive this post and me I'm not the best at sharing reviews DX)
Now, some things I wanna point out... (MASSIVE SPOILERS AND PERSONAL HEADCANONS AHEAD)
THOUGHTS ON CHARACTERS
I really liked Wade Whipple. He's goofy, and dorky, and he was fantastic for saving his family and Knuckles. His character arc was really interesting to watch, and he's got a lot of funny moments. Him and Knuckles also make a great team. I believe he would make a great Uncle for Knuckles. XD
Knuckles' arc was fantastic too. I was hoping that he realizes that Earth is his home, and he did. The Movie Series version of Knuckles is definitely my favorite version of Knuckles. EVER. Love this character to death. Number one favorite character right now.
The story was pretty good, too. Interesting that Knuckles isn't the only main focus, but I was onboard with the idea that Wade is also in the spotlight. I liked Wade but I love him A LOT.
The whole drama with Wade's family was something that honestly caught me off guard, but in a good way. It's just great to see more of his extended family. (And Wade's mother and is just so sweet and cool.)
Mason and Willoughby were fun to watch. Almost better than Orbot and Cubot, honestly. XD
The Buyer... I kind of forgot about him until the last few episodes. XD Cool villain, though!
Pachacamac... Never thought I would actually enjoy this character. Really wish he got enough screen time, dude is so hilarious. So much better than the Pachacamac we all knew from Adventure 1 pffffft. And hearing Doc Brown's voice coming out of Mac's mouth was the best part. He fits the role perfectly.
WACHOWSKI FAMILY CRUMBS! WE GOT TO SEE MORE OF THE WACHOWSKIS! It was only for one episode, but it's just so refreshing to see Knuckles with his newfound family, especially Tails. (Even though he didn't get enough screentime.)
No Donut Lord... 😔
MY HEADCANONS OF THE EVENTS DURING THE SHOW (and afterwards)
The house is still in construction after the second film. I have a feeling that the Knuckles show took place probably a month or two after the second film. (Or at least after the baseball field scene from the movie.)
And if that's the case, then it's probably why Sonic and Tails haven't called Maddie "mom" yet. Sonic JUST made Donut Dad official, but not hearing Sonic calling Maddie "mom" didn't surprise me, actually. Since he had a mother figure once before, and now she's gone. Sonic is probably still struggling to make Mama Maddie official after that whole mess. 🥺
And also I think Tails does look at Tom and Maddie as his parents, but calls them by their first names because that's what he's most comfortable with for now.
Sonic mentions that Tails and Knuckles are his roommates. ...Something tells me that he hasn't realized the bigger picture yet. 😈 Once the realization hits, it's over for the middle child.
I seriously don't believe Knuckles is sticking with the Whipples. He's got a bed at home, and "pretzel woman" is a motherly title of sorts for Maddie. I just think Knuckles and Wade have formed a really strong bond. Wade is more of a uncle figure for him, but the Whipples are part of the Wachowskis regardless. 💕
I bet Knuckles' grape stash that the moment Knuckles walks back home with Wade, Sonic, Tails and Maddie (and Tom if he came home) freaks the hell out because he just straight up left home without an explanation. Especially since he's grounded and shouldn't have step foot out of the house. But all that matters is that Knuckles is at home with his family. Did this calm everybody down? No, and yes. It's hard to explain. (At least Sonic knows now that Knuckles can finally relax.)
Ever since the events of the Knuckles Show, seeing visions of Pachacamac is pretty normal for Knuckles, whether he needs to be guided for something even if it's small, or he just casually shows up in his dreams just to say "hi." I feel like since he visited Wade while he was unconscious, I think Pachacamac would also visit other people's dreams or visions. It be so goddamn funny if this dude just randomly show up in Sonic's dream, scaring the living daylights out of him, and when he explains it to Knuckles, he's like: "Oh, that's just Mac, he's cool." and Sonic is like: "???????"
THOUGHTS ON THE EPISODES - Fair warning, I've only seen these episodes ONCE (Including some clips I rewatched on Tumblr.) so some things here might be fuzzy or wrong, so bare with me here...
Episode 1 was a great start. I love the dynamic Sonic and Knuckles has. Bummer that we didn't get to see more of them together, but with the power of writing, that problem can be solved! (HUZZAH!) I love the small bit with Knuckles and his mother Maddie after he got grounded and how he just, took it okay with the fact that he's grounded. And I love Sonic trying to help his new buddy out, he's an absolute sweetheart for that. Pachacamac's appearance in the episode took me by surprise and he was such a joy to watch. Love the elderly goofball. Seeing Knuckles and Wade interact was nice, too, even when he gets to talk about his dad. It was a nice moment. And Knuckolas Cage. Best nickname ever, how dare Knuckles decline such a title for a perfect warrior XD
Episode 2 was great. Absolutely love the daydream scene with Wade's plan on saving Knuckles from the G.U.N. agents, and Holding Out For a Hero playing in the background. GOLDEN. Don't remember much else other than that and Knuckles and Wade rocking out to so music. (And Knuckles breaking the radio again.)
Episode 3 is when we get to see Wade's family members, and it was nice. Wanda is one of those siblings that we had and Wendy (is that her name?) is just so lovely. We got to know more of Knuckles' dad, and once more, it was a tender moment between an Echidna and a dork-ass Uncle. 😊 And we got a EPIC fight scene with Knuckles, Wendy and the goons. It was AWESOME. Also, love Wade's room. He's got good taste.
Episode 4... Oh, my God. It was a fever dream. Literally. It was so RIDICULOUS but it was the greatest thing I've ever seen in a long time. XD I love musical numbers that just come out of NOWHERE, and this was one of them! Adam Pally (Wade) in a Knuckles costume is just the most elegant thing. AND ECHIDNA MUPPETS ARE REAL! I WAS HOPING THAT THEY WOULD ACTUALLY BRING IN THE ECHIDNA MUPPET!! Jokes aside, it was a strangely epic episode of Wade going through Knuckles' past in a unique way. And the songs were pretty great. ...You think that's where all the budgeting went? On this gorgeous musical number? /j Also we got more of my boy Pachacamac, being one of my favorite characters besides Knuckles lmao GOD I wish we got more of Pachacamac. I love him so much XD
Episode 5 Is when they arrive at Reno. It was alright. We got to see Wade meeting his dad finally (also Knuckles is using a phone no problem I guess??) I think that's all I remember. WE GOT KNUCKLES WITH THE HAT THOUGH SO YEAH!
Episode 6 is the last one of the mini series and it was pretty kick-ass. More cool fight scenes, with Knuckles and the Agents, him against the Buyer, which was short and sweet, but still pretty intense. Wade and Pete was competing in bowling. Kept forgetting about that, but it was cool regardless. And Wade being the best uncle ever and protecting Knuckles while he was out. Also kind of forgot a lot from this episode, but nonetheless, badass way to end the mini series. Complete with the classic freeze frame of Knuckles and Wade getting a high five! Knuckles realizing that his home is on Earth was such a powerful scene. It was the first Sonic movie all over again.
And yes, there was a pretty quick post credits scene where Knuckles found a song and claimed it was his jam. It was really cute. XD
Really wish there was a scene where Knuckles came back home to the Wachowskis with the family flipping the lid over the fact that he left the house, but in my heart I know damn well it happened. I know this series too well lmao
That's pretty much all I wanna say about how this show made me feel. It was a fun time. Not was insane as Movie 1 and 2, but still as enjoyable.
Honestly, after watching this, I hope we get a Wachowski family TV show, where it's just the family on misadventures, and moments together that are comedic, fluffy, angst, any emotion you wanna feel watching it, and it's just a good time. I just wanna see more of this goofy little growing family. (Also it'd be cool if season 1 was after the first movie because I wanna see Sonic adjusting to his new life with Tom and Maddie and spending traditions and holidays with them before the sequel.) I love this series too much. 😅
This show got me really ambitious to work on my stories and I really wanna show the community how amazing these characters are. (I just need to get an AO3 in the future...)
It feels good to be back on the Wachowski bandwagon.
The Knuckles Show is flawed, but it was a fun time. I love the characters, I love the story, I love the choice of songs they used, and of course, I love Knuckles. This is the best we've ever seen of Knuckles, and I'm proud of how far this little, tough guy has came.
The Echidna Warrior made his debut 30 years ago, and he's never been stronger. Keep on punching, Knuckles! 😎💕
The baseball in holodeck vs vulcans has got to be my favourite piece of Star Trek. Benjamin 'the emissary' Sisko being mad pressed about a decades long rivalry is great tv for sure but the way everyone else gets involved is fucking hilarious. Special mentions to Odo's umpiring and Worf giving us this all-timer..
Tumblr media
Having an episode like this SmackDown in the middle of the dominion war and after jadzia's death could have easily gone wrong. But man, ds9 just gets it, gotta be the best trek i fear💚
Entertainment Weekly just named Documentary Now! as one of the 'The 25 best shows to watch on Netflix right now' (April 6, 2024) which lead me to this ranking on Consequence.net 'Every Episode of Documentary Now!, Ranked From Worst to Best' by Clint Worthington from November 9, 2022.
Alexander Skarsgård's 2 episodes 'Solider of Illusion' Parts I & II were ranked #5 by Clint:
It’s a Parody Of: Werner Herzog’s existential, surreal documentaries, most notably the Les Blank-directed Empire of Dreams, about the making of his historical epic Fitzcarraldo.  It would have been easy for Documentary Now! and writer John Mulaney to do a straightforward pastiche of Empire of Dreams, make Bill Hader do a hokey Werner Herzog impression, and call it a day. But what makes “Soldier of Illusion” so brilliant is the ways it dodges those expectations while building its own comic infrastructure one gut-busting brick at a time. Alexander Skarsgård’s Rainer Wolz isn’t quite doing a Herzog voice, but he captures that intensity, the precision, the dogged desire to put himself and others at risk for the sake of art. But John Mulaney’s script throws in the most surprising of monkey wrenches: He’s not only documenting the lives of an impoverished tribe of people in Russia, he’s simultaneously producing the pilot for a CBS sitcom called Bachelor Nanny. And of course, he directs a hokey three-camera farce with the same intensity as he would any of his hard-hitting meditations on life, right down to calling up his unstable ringer (August Diehl’s Dieter Diemler, nailing the volatility of Klaus Kinski). A masterclass in elevating the inside-baseball film nerd nature of the premise into something universally hilarious.
My edit of images of Alexander Skarsgård as Rainier/Rainer Wolz. Most are my screen caps, costume designer Claire Finlay Thompson still photographer Will Robson-Scott, and his IMDb page. It was inspired by the edit on Consequence.net.
ALOTO Reflections
So I’ve spent a ridiculous amount of time trying to think of how I want to phrase my thoughts post finishing the season and I can’t promise full consistency or coherency but there’s something I want to explore and praise so much that my rambling be damned. So as my girl Issa once said, I go into every show like
Tumblr media
Y’all I had such low expectations for Max’s storyline. I’m a fan of the original movie and I thought maybe they’d expand that minute with those black women to idk 5 in a few episodes then pat themselves on the back for a “diversity win” BUT THEY DIDN’T DO THAT!
Forewarned there will probably be spoilers ahead. Listen, I love period pieces so much and as a black woman, I’m so used to it being about nothing but our trauma as if one of the defining characteristics of Black people in the US isn’t finding joy in the most unimaginable circumstances. And beyond that, I’m used to seeing us portrayed as one dimensional as if we don’t have our own community and struggles and layers.
Instead of those maybe 5 minutes I expected, we got Max and her place in a family who experiences a wonderful amount of success and status. I fucking love that her mom Toni not only owns her own business but it’s a beauty salon. One of the epicenters of black femininity specifically. I love that this is the legacy she wants to leave for Max and the fact that it won’t work for Max. Not only is there the very obvious fact that baseball is Max’s dream but also she interacts with her gender expression (as a fucking stud be still my weak lesbian heart) in a way where being in this very specifically defined feminine space would be stifling. BUT ALSO! That salon is home. Max won’t let a stranger cut her hair, she goes to her uncle because she needs the connection that exists in her family and her community. AND THEY SHOWED US THAT!
Clance, dear Lord, my beloved Clance. They gave Max not just a funny sassy sidekick but a woman who is supportive, hilarious and a vintage blerd (black nerd for those unaware). Also we get that lovely conflict of Clance being so stressed out about her housewarming because she doesn’t have the success of the Chapmans. Her place is still being established in her community. I just don’t have the words for how fucking rare that is to see portrayed in a lot of media much less in a period piece. Also all those instances where Clance tries to hold Max back because she knows the dangers of losing your shit in front of white folks. It’s an ever present force in both of their lives and the way they remind each other and protect each other, I could just sob.
ALSO! I’m so beyond thrilled at the romances between black folks. Max’s parents are adorably and disgustingly in love and we don’t get that often enough with our legacies of families torn apart and violence (which are very real but it’s not all that exists). We also get Clance and Guy. I LOVE GUY. He’s so sweet and loves Clance so much and they are so wonderfully supportive and vulnerable with each other. AND WE GET TO SEE IT! Then Max, my wonderful wonderful Max gets to navigate two different avenues; one in which she’s a secret side piece of someone who doesn’t fully see her and one in which nestled in the safety and community built by her uncle she gets to meet a woman not in the dim shadows of a secret but in a bright light of joy where she presents in a way where she’s finally found comfort. And Bert and Gracie, my gosh Bert and Gracie, they’re like a queer version of my favorite aunt and uncle and they give Max a place and hope and they’re SO IN LOVE.
Honestly this was all beyond my wildest dreams and while I find myself grateful, I’m also in a place where I’m like it’s what we deserve. In fact we deserve whole shows like this in any period of time because we’re worthy and see what beautiful stories we can be?? Anyway, I’m going to go back to sobbing and probably rewatch this show a few more times.
Samurai Champloo Review
What the hell even is a 'champloo' anyways? Ever since one fateful Passover seder, where my older cousin told me about this series, I've wondered about it. Its certainly not English, and though a quick Google search could give me my answer, the mystery of it all kept this show on my radar for nearly a decade. Its not often that a show with a title as puzzling as this get popular, especially enough for my slacker cousin to recommend it to me. With a recommendation like that, though, I knew there was something special about it.
Tumblr media
Samurai Champloo is a strange breed. Created in 2004 by Masaru Gotsubo, and animated by defunct studio Manglobe, the series follows a trio of miscreants on a journey to find a mysterious samurai. Along the way, they dodge the law, fight assassins, and discover how hard it is to be a minority in a changing world.
Tumblr media
Champloo's biggest draw is it's style. The series features a modern-style Edo that keeps the historical dress and architecture, but adds a contemporary kick everywhere else. The opening alone sets the tone perfectly: sharply colored characters, juxtaposed onto paper-like backgrounds, moving to a hip-hop flow. Its stylish, like an old-school music video, and draws you in in seconds with its funky beat and striking visuals. Its the perfect opening, and things only get cooler from there.
Tumblr media
The Edo of this anime features a mix of traditional Japanese and modern North American styles, presented in a way that sets it apart from the rest. Its a show where you might find a samurai sword fight set to record scratches, or characters wistfully embarking on a journey while hip-hop music plays in the background. Early episodes use these scratches in the soundtrack as editing cues, cross-cutting between actions at the sound to create a wholly unique experience. It can't be overstated how much the musical styles of this anime make the viewing experience shine.
Tumblr media
On top of that, much of the content of the show's episodes takes pages from a more modern handbook. One episode has the main trio caught up in the world of graffiti, as two brothers compete to see who can 'tag' the most dangerous places. Another has them play against American traders in a overly-violent game of baseball. All the while, characters talk with modern slang, ditching formalities and keeping with the tone the soundtrack sets. All this combined creates a historical anime that feels surprisingly contemporary, despite the obvious.
Tumblr media
Over the course of the show's 26 episodes, we follow a main trio of characters as they journey to find a mysterious samurai who smells of sunflowers. The trip is long, and each episode usually features the gang stopping somewhere and getting involved in a stranger's problems, usually learning some moral or getting a lead on their quest afterwards. Its not often for series as mature as these to be episodic, given how seriously they take their plots, but here, it works well.
Tumblr media
Every episode feels like another step along their journey, whether it be an eating contest in a big city, or hunting down a pick-pocket who stole their wallets. The series also does an excellent job at making the journey feel long, often referring back to the places the characters have been so far to keep track of it. You could actually track the trio's journey with a real life map if you wanted, since all the places they visit are historical, and probably still exist. Maybe someone out there has even tried their journey in real life...?
Tumblr media
An anime is only as interesting as its main characters, and this one certainly has an interesting cast. The series stars three characters, who together, always find a way to screw things up in the most hilarious ways. First, there's Fuu, a young woman who meets the other two characters when they burn her workplace down, and enlists them to help find the samurai who smells of sunflowers. The show pulls no punches with her, often having her be the butt of the joke just as much as her companions. She's loud, whiny, naïve, and often eats the most out of all of them. Yet, she's usually the one that stops fights, is the voice of reason in all this show's chaos, and shows kindness to everyone she meets, even someone who tried to kill her. Though the other characters might play her off as another nagging woman, Fuu's right more often than not, and is a valuable member of the team.
Tumblr media
Next is Jin, a ronin with a cool attitude. He's the level-headed one of the trio, often keeping to himself instead of jumping into arguments like the others. His cold exterior hides some pretty deep traumas, which were exciting to learn more about as the story developed. Characters like him are often stereotyped as unfeeling swordsmen, yet beneath all the sullen glances and reclusive body language, he grows to care about his companions more than any sense of pride.
Tumblr media
Lastly, there's Mugen, the wild vagrant. His reckless fighting style, love for battle, and unquenchable pride endeared him to me pretty quickly, making him an easy choice as favorite. Compared to Jin and Fuu, Mugen is an old-school tough guy, a shonen protagonist aged up a decade and thrown backwards a couple hundred years. Like Jin, he initially is quite guarded, but learns to express himself little by little, eventually revealing his tragic backstory. Though, to be fair, most of his self expression comes in the form of violence or threats, but I'm not here to judge him.
Tumblr media
Together, these three form a simple comedy trio, and get into trouble at every turn on their journey as they learn to tolerate each other. From start to finish, the trio struggle to get along peacefully, but that's what makes their dynamic worth watching. Mugen and Jin's mutual hatred, balanced out by Fuu's persistence, is what keeps them going. Depending on what episode it is, they take turns being the 'straight man', keeping the dynamic fresh and free of stale tropes.
Tumblr media
At the heart of this anime, though, is its theme of identity in a changing world. Throughout the series, the trio encounter various minority groups along their journey, and learn about their unique struggles. One episode has them protecting a secret Dutch immigrant, taking him on a tour of the city while they dodge immigration officers. When the man reveals that he fled his home country because of homophobia, it doesn't feel out of place or poorly handled. His queerness is just as much a part of his character arc as his foreign-ness, and though the show makes a few light-hearted jabs at his accent and obvious visual difference, it takes the rest of his identity rather seriously. This character, while only in the show for an episode, is just one of many minority characters in this series that is handled well, showing that a series doesn't have to be disrespectful to be historical.
Tumblr media
Another major theme in this series is death, and the acceptance of it. Being an action series, its pretty obvious that a lot of characters die, but what's interesting is how other characters deal with those deaths. Many side characters who the trio befriend on their journey are dealing with loss in some way, whether it be a husband, sibling, child, or something else. We witness how their grief drives them, such as with Fuu, or various other characters in the series. In a world such as the one in this series, death is commonplace, but a healthy acceptance of it is unfortunately less so. Each encounter with death in the series opens up new discussions about it, and often had me pondering what these characters might do next, or how I would deal with their situations.
In the end, though, Samurai Champloo is a fascinating series that brings a unique blend of Eastern and Western styles to make a truly memorable viewing experience. It's hip-hop soundtrack pairs beautifully with flashy and quick-paced sword fighting, creating a simultaneous modern-historical vibe to it all. Its characters have an enjoyable dynamic that kept me coming back day after day for more, which inevitable led to disappointment upon discovering how short this series is. If we lived in a perfect world, this would have at least an extra season, but unfortunately, perfect this world ain't.
But hey, at least I can spend my Pink Halloween (read: Valentine's Day) knowing that Fuu is valid, Mugen is gender, and Jin defintely got pegged in that one episode.
I want to hear the niche anime recs
Oh I GOT you. Most of these are all short watches, 12/13 eps, and absolutely worth anyone's time--there's also enough genres here that I hope there's something you like.
Do you like thrillers, bright colors, and edge-of-your seat scifi dystopia action? Akudama Drive had me so hooked I watched all 13 episodes, no breaks, and then it broke my heart at the very end as a parting gift. Fuckin incredible pacing.
Want a silly crime show that's an easily digestible buddy cop until ep7 takes you for an absolute ride with a skyrocketing body count and tonal whiplash? I watched Millionaire Detective: Balance Unlimited just for the seiyuus originally but the cast made me soft for them. 12 eps, not very high octane, and very sweet.
Interested in a vampire romance that somehow manages to quietly deconstruct heteronormative, allonormative societal constructs about falling in love on top of sick character designs and a gorgeous atmosphere? Call of the Night is a brilliant 12 episodes that had me absolutely whipped for the chemistry between the two leads.
Do you want something dark that nevertheless doesn't take itself too seriously? Hakata Tonkatsu Ramens is an anime about hitmen who play baseball on their off days, but it's also about found family and the lead is a crossdressing, grumpy assassin who ends up in a funny roommate situation as the premise of the show. Fantastic use of the style where each arc is a case, and the characters are both hilarious and heartfelt. Thanks to @neon-snail-city for the amazing rec.
Okay, picture this: sci-fi crime/psychological thriller, except you don't know if the twist is time travel, seeing the future, or something else entirely. Captured criminals take a deep dive into the minds of serial killers in order to catch them in Id:Invaded and it's such a brilliant overlooked anime that I can't believe it's so under the radar. I've heard it's similar to Psycho Pass but I haven't watched that yet, so I can't confirm.
Hear me out here: Interspecies Reviewers may be an ecchi pushing the boundaries of how much titty they can show on TV, but it has the most nuanced and intelligent exploration of kink, sex, and boundaries that I've ever seen in anime. And it's batshit hilarious, so if you like dirty humor, this one is a fun ride.
I can't make a niche anime rec list without Mars Red, either. Another vampire anime, except this one is a lot heavier. If you're a fan of anime that deals with grief, what it means to be human, and how to survive in a fast-changing world, Mars Red has some heart wrenching stories to tell you. I've talked a lot about it on this acc if you search the Mars Red tag :)
If you're a magical girl fan who enjoyed Magica Madoka and you're looking for something else bonkers to fill the void, check out Princess Tutu. It has some of the rawest writing I've ever seen, and it's about characters deciding if they want to fight fate or follow it in a crushing exploration of the fairytale genre--it's incredibly meta and self-aware as its main gimmick, too.
This one was popular enough to get a second season, but I love Snow White with the Red Hair too much not to put it here. It's a sweet shoujo romance with a fairytale setting and the female lead is one of the most badass, headstrong women I've ever seen. She doesn't take shit lying down and the male lead is head over heels for her, plus the side characters are super endearing.
it's become almost a daily ritual to watch the powerpuff girls with my mom--ever since i found out it was on neflix.
im having a blast revisiting the show. one of my favorite episodes was where Mojo was trying to have a normal ass day but the girls threw in that baseball 💀 this show is so cute and silly. bless. 💙🩷💚
Awwww, that's so nice! 💖 And yes, that episode is hilarious! I feel like the older I get, the more I can identify with Mojo's impatience in that one. And the way the girls antagonize him by basically being their curious little kid selves (which... is only made worse with the addition of their superpowers) is just so good and funny. 🤣
