‘The experiences of one’s youth, determine the entirety of one’s life…’

As much as I have my reservations about the direction in which BNHA is heading, i still absolutely love how certain secondary plot threads are being continued or developed.

Especially this one, god.

Because this panel, and AFO’s words, dont just refer to tomura, who’s obviously led a shit life but has managed to bond with some people at least, but indirectly also reflects on Aizawa.

And its the placement of characters in this scene that really gets to me. I mean, Kurogiri had no logical reason behind dropping Mic there- specifically where Aizawa is. But he does. And he talks about the feelings one harbours towards one’s friends, the panel zooming in on Aizawa, which i think is completely intentional.

The feelings that Aizawa still harbours towards Shirakumo, the memories of the three of them, including Midnight (why hasnt hori sensei mentioned her yet what even)

And I’m really glad we got this scene because hell when has Aizawa’s feelings ever been mentioned? And I’m talking verbally. As readers we always just knew thanks to Vigilantes and this in fact being a shounen manga (and that one scene where he bawled his eyes out because of dry eye, sure Aizawa we believe you,) but this man will never spit out the words so I’m glad its coming through at least this way.

As interesting as this scene is, pls come back Shirakumo, come back as someone who recognises his memories of rooftop trio, and at the same time realises that right now, the one he wants to protect, Tomura, is actually suffering a great deal.

Another submission from a lurker/fan. Thank you so much 😊.

Them: I have to come in and point out something that I notice with Horikoshi. He isn't interested in friendly, nice characters. I read some of his previous works. Oumagadoki Zoo was about a very clumsy girl, named Hana, wanting to do something with herself, and found herself working in a magical zoo. She is literally like Izuku: kind, sweet, friendly, has a passion for the thing she loves, is knowledgeable, determined, heroic...but it's clear in the manga that Hori is interested in other characters other than her. The readers don't see her school life anymore after the first chapter. No look into her personal life outside of the zoo, even though she's the main character! The only positive is that she has more screen time than Izuku does, because her job revolves around caring for the magical humanoid animals and helping them work out their problems. Sensei no Bulge, or Barrage, didn't get to stick around long enough to be judged properly. But it did give its main character, Astro, better treatment than Hana and Izuku...Then again, it didn't last long for the problems to show (though, like Izuku, the whole "chosen one" thing reared its head in it). Honestly, you can see Horikoshi is TRYING to be invested in them: he makes them the main characters, he gives them backstories that folks easily relates with, and even give them cool moments!

It's just...his love for edgy characters (jerks, stoics, maniacs, etc.) is far too strong. Characters like Shiina and Bakugo are jerks and buttholes to the other characters in various ways in their plots (Shiina's more oblivious with his, while Bakugo's is intitional), yet they originally started with personalities that had them being more likable in some regard (Shiina started as a somewhat stoic, but caring character who saves the magical animals caught by poachers in the Oumagadoki Zoo oneshot, Bakugo starting out as a super friendly person who is honest to a fault in the concept stages). Horikoshi just struggles to keep interest in this character type, and it's ironic since those are the character's he seems to work best with...WHEN he puts in the effort of focusing on them.

My response: now, I haven’t read any of his other manga, but from what I’ve heard from you and everyone else is that this unfortunately seems to be a theme in his work. Now, there’s nothing wrong with him liking edgy, darker, or asshole characters but Hori doesn’t know how to make this work. He doesn’t give us a good reason to want to follow these asshole characters nor does he give them any meaningful development. His best written characters seem to be the ones that have kindness to them. Shoto for example, despite being cold to his classmates, still had an undying love for his mother and felt guilty over his father’s abuse breaking her. Eventually he managed to bond with Izuku. Sadly it feels Hori is bored with his MCs who have immense kindness, which begs the question as to why he even bothered writing them in the first place.

But you know, you can tell that HK is very invested in the Todoroki family… And I love that for them but please sensei, transfer some of that investment to the OFA/AFO family too 🙏 Do you remember that crappy Deku-AM reunion and Stain of all people hyping up AM? And just this weird focus on AM’s legacy instead of the person he is now? Like, something has to give. Love to the Todofam but the MCfam also deserves to shine 🥲 Bakugou an exception lol.

i am not caught up with the manga so i can't comment on this with %100 accuracy but i don't think the focus on all might's legacy is weird because you can't separate it from who he is now yet. if you mean this weird 'all might failed' thing... i agree but it's also a misinterpretation. All might did carry the society on his very broad shoulders for decades. it was the system and society who failed all might and themselves.

i found the AM and Stain encounter hilarious sjdfjd all might having intense people being obsessed with him (deku, endeavor, bakugou, stain) while him being a poor little meow meow is djkfdkjgjdfjk.

I saw that we got Endeavor's back story and us seeing Endy's dad but not Izuku's is very purposeful. if NOTHING comes out of Izuku's dad I will change my opinions on Hori's craft... in a major way. overall, this arc seems to be going too fast and while i understand once the ball is rolling it will only go faster, hori could've given izuku alone arc more time and explore the origins of AFO and OFA users more. i am hoping he will make up for it, so if he decides to solve the todofam drama first i will just enjoy the ride.

note that i am willing to overlook a lot of mistakes because he gave us endeavor's tiddies.
