some (mildly disjointed) thoughts i had about the translation of most recent leona overblot scene from the second twst novel. unsaid disclaimer is obvi these are just my thoughts and youre free to disagree. i cant stop you

read more because i might ramble a bit 💆🏾‍♀️

i'll start by saying that i'm very grateful for the novel & yuureis translations, bc its given me so much to chew on wrt leonas psyche and mental state, much more than book 2 in the game did. i havent bothered to go looking for reactions tho, bc i can already kind of predict the takes i'll find (knowing how parts of the fandom talks abt leona generally) - and i do "get" it, in the sense that i do also feel the way he tortures ruggie before he overblots is upsetting - but theres so much to dig into here, i feel like its such a waste to get hung up on obsessively moralizing

(i'll mention here that to formulate these thoughts i'm also pulling from the translation of leona's post-overblot scene, plus some moments from the game that i'll mention specifically as i go)

for example, the things leona says pre-overblot, his meltdown about dreams being stupid and useless, how the savanaclaw students (ruggie included) aren't meant to question him; they're meant to obey quietly, sound less like actual things he's trying to tell them and more like him lashing out at himself. as in, he's more talking at them, not to them. skipping forward to book 6: there we see leona give jamil advice, but the implication underneath is that everything he's telling jamil are things leona wishes he had internalized himself - again here, he's talking to someone, but really it's also directed inwards. almost like it's easier for him to look at (and speak about) himself critically when he can externalize it as critique of other people

the other thing im curious about is the distant, detached persona he adopts when he's truly angry. this'll be quick because i don't feel i have enough information to unpack it properly, but if i allow myself to spin thoughts out from limited information: it could almost be a habit he picked up as a child - something he might've forced himself to learn as part of an effort to be seen as more of a 'model' prince. if people were afraid of his moodiness because they feared what his UM (he) could do, then if he swallows those emotions maybe he can mitigate that. this, ofc, being shot through with the expectation that, as royalty, any order he gives people will obey

the final thing, for this post at least, is unpacking the way leona lashes out at ruggie when ruggie defies him. i'm willing to make the very safe bet that most of the reading of this moment is focused on leona being angry over being defied at all, or general disgust at how small and weak ruggie is (appears) to be. and while i think both of those points have some element of truth to them, i think the larger aspect of leonas reaction is jealousy. ruggie somehow, despite everything, despite all of the disadvantages life has thrown at him, still has the courage to have determination. and i want to be very clear here: this is not me saying being poor or struggling is admirable because it makes you strong - i'm not naive and i'm not here to romanticize poverty. what i am trying to say here ruggie's tenacity - a tenacity his life circumstances developed in him - is something that leona lacks, and that's what he's jealous of. he's jealous of his inability to keep having that hope, to maintain that courage in the face of his own repeated failures

(an aside: isn't it ironic that part of the reason ruggie has that tenacity is leona? leonas tutoring, leonas effective leadership of the spelldrive club, and as housewarden?)

(an aside 2x: in many ways, 'giving up' can be seen as a luxury. ruggie does not have the luxury to give up, because it could very well mean that he doesn't eat that day. for leona, regardless of what he does he's going to have a roof over his head and three square meals a day anyway, so what does it matter if he gives up? sure, he won't be happy, but he'll be comfortable in a material sense, and isn't that enough? except, of course, it isn't - not for him. as much as he tries to deny it, he's as fiercely ambitious as the rest of his dorm)

Hello hello!! Thank you for this question, it became a rabbit hole!

Yana had this to say about the villains who were used for inspiration (from the game guide):

"The number one reason is that they are all from 'masterpieces with which everyone is familiar'. They are all legendary—you need only say the movie titles and the characters come immediately to mind.

Since they are also legends in their own right, we thought it would be good to choose stories with a long history, and that is how we settled on these seven.

There are many other movies with fascinating villains, so it was a very difficult decision."

She also goes into detail about the different eras during which the movies were set, which may also have influenced which were selected! More here! (Youtube)

But there may be more going on than we have been told 👀 There are theories that "death" is another theme that links the dorms together!

All members of the Great Seven were villains that either died in their movies (Scar, Ursula, Maleficent, Jafar (in the second movie), the Evil Queen), or were never alive in the human sense to begin with (Queen of Hearts, Hades).

Death has never been a subtle theme in Twst, with new students at NRC arriving via coffins.

Kalim observes that, with the ceremonial robes they wear to orientation, "it's like we're attending a funeral."

And there are also the ghosts!

While it seems possible to be born as a ghost (according to Crowley and Eliza), Lilia says that ghosts "linger here due to powerful attachments or personal motives...they aren't visible outside of magically suffused locations like Night Raven College," and that they "linger" by choice.

And this brings back to the prefect!

In the manga, all three prefects that we have seen thus far have had names connected to the afterlife:

・Heartslabyul Arc, Enma Yuuken (円満 雄剣): Enma's family name is pronounced the same (the kanji is different) as 閻魔 (Enma), the king of hell in Buddhism. From the Kyoto National Museum website: "The King of Buddhist Hell is Enma, who is also the judge of the afterlife."

・Savanaclaw Arc, Hirasaka Yuuka (比良坂 悠河): "Hirasaka" is written and pronounced the same as the hirasaka of Yomotsu-hira Saka, known as "The Entrance to the Underworld" in Shintoism, explained on Shimane Prefecture's official tourism website: "Yomotsu-hira Saka appears as the boundary between the land of the dead and the land of the living."

・Octavinelle Arc, Mito Yuuta (三途 宥太): "Mito" uses the same kanji as 三途川, the "River of Three Crossings," which is "a mythological river the souls of the deceased must cross by one of three crossing points." Credit to blogger Tansho for the discovery that "River Styx" was changed to 三途川 in the Japanese-language dub of the "Hercules" TV show.

So there is definitely a theme of the prefect filling a role between life and death!

While one theory is that the prefect ended up in Twisted Wonderland after they died (in the manga it is insinuated that all three prefects were hit by vehicles directly before waking up at NRC), another theory is that they're not quite dead yet.

If that is the case then they may be close (Grim wakes them up prematurely, and Crowley says that this is his first time having a student who opened their "gate" (coffin) on their own) and they might just be an astral projection of someone who is between life and death, appearing at the magically suffused location that is NRC.

In other words, a ghost 👀

The manga is following a theme of naming its characters something involving "Yuu" (which is always the students' nickname for them) and "Yuu" is also commonly adopted as the default-name for the game's prefect.

Another word that involves a "Yuu" sound is 幽霊 (Yuurei), which means: ghost :>

(Hence the name of this blog! It is the very chuunibyou name of a twitter account I made in 2018 to complain about my job. This potential connection to Twst was completely unintentional and makes me laugh.)

As for why the prefect was named Prefect of Ramshackle dorm instead of Housewarden: I am not sure! But it seems to have something to do with the unique situation that is the prefect's role.

They have not technically been assigned to the overseeing of the dorm as a whole, just to Grim, so maybe that is why? :>

And it is particularly interesting as that means that the role of Housewarden of Ramshackle Dorm is still open--maybe to be filled some day...? 👀

Just dropping in a quick ask because ironically google is bollocks for trying to find an answer for this. I saw on your feed a while back about how when it comes to kimonos that you never fold Right Over Left because that's reserved for the dead. I was wondering if that rule applied to any other articles of clothing, like cheongsams, qipao, ao dai etc, or if that's a kimono specific rule? I'm asking because my brain decided to ask "What if Vampire/Dhampir D&D character, how to show visually without Dracula dramatic route?" And thus I thought I'd ask someone who's probably got far more wisdom in this area than I do before committing any cultural faux paus. Especially since Google etc won't give any answers on the topic that I can find here in the UK. Thanks for taking the time to read this, and hope everything's going well for you on your side of the planet. Hope you and your loved ones are all alright.

This is a tricky answer b/c my knowledge is mostly Japan, but Japan actually used to cross the other way, until China adopted the practice and then Japan did as well. (so if you're drawing Jomon or yayoi period stuff, it was the other way around, up until a certain point)

China also did it in a way that "othered" some groups in the region, like "this is how the CIVILIZED people do it" so it is important to check with folks from those groups specifically. I know that Hmong cross the other way, for example.

When it comes to characters tho, that's where it can get tricky. I'd say that it would be a pretty big giveaway to cross the other way, so unless your character wants to out themselves pretty quickly, dressing the way folks around them do would probably make the most sense.

I know Japan at least is mixed on this sort of thing in media, there was a zombie show where the kimono were crossed the other way, but then there was yet another zombie show where they weren't. In Hoshi no Kuni, the gems wear their PJs crossed the other way, but it's not explicitly said why.

Personally, unless I'm drawing art of a character specifically dressed that way, or like a proper actual yuurei, then I tend to stick to the rule.

But I am by NO means the arbitrator on this at all, it's just the history that I've picked up studying and living here, and I know that it can be a sensitive topic, so I'm just telling you what rules I set for myself to be as respectful as possible. Also, my experience is like 90% Japan, so I'm not as knowledgeable about China and Korea as I am Japan, and only know what I observe from looking at posts from folks from those places when they talk about their traditional clothing.

Sorry if that isn't as cut and dry as you'd have hoped for, but I don't think it's my place to call it one way or the other, only just to say what I personally would do in that situation ^_^

Hello! I had a quick question, and since, in my head at least, you are THE "Lore Holder" of PJSK (lol), I thought I could try and ask you :

Do you know why Into the Night/Yoru ni Kakeru is the only "normal" song in PJSK that got alt vocals from different units? I always wondered why, since it's the ONLY song like that and that the alt vocals are from "random" characters and not from the leaders like in Gunjou Sanka for example.

I've let you down as the lore guy because I don't actually know. There probably is a reason but the song was added to the game months before I started playing so I don't know for certain. I do know however that it was added as part of an Ayase song campaign (along with Yuurei Tokyo and the commissioned song Cinema), so I'm guessing that's the reason why it got the special treatment, as other song campaigns have had similar benefits of sorts (such as all the songs in the Eve campaign getting 2DMVs). Not sure why they picked the lineup they did though.

It had only been about two years since this new situation for her life started. Celeste, renamed Nova; was still getting used to her new 'name' and practically everything with her new home.

And only in the last year did her beloved Flapple somehow find her here; exhausted but relieved. To Nova's surprise, the Pokemon was allowed to stay in her possession.

Hearing that Yuurei was alright with letting her call him something else sparked joy in her eyes. An excitement that she hadn't felt in some time!

He was already much better than her biological father; though she still missed her mother and her sister.

Nova couldn't hold it in and hugged Yuurei tightly.

"Then just Dad or Father! And it'll be just between us; I won't call you that in front of everyone else. Promise!" Nova replied as a Pokeball was presented to her. Was only recently that Gala had finally been put in one of his own.

A Misdrevaus! She'd never heard of this Pokemon before; but now she was Nova's!

"Thank you Dad!!!"

Despite all pretenses of entering, the Rocket lawyer merely stood at the door, not taking a step in until formally invited and led safely. After all, he was not familiar with this space and without aid he would be flailing for sure.

"Thank you for your work....Don't skimp out on meals." He held up a sealed thermos. "There is some tofu miso soup inside. Have it as you will. I'll leave it by the door."

If there was one trait Kris had picked up from her mentor, it was her work ethic. There were times it worked to her benefit—achievements she'd made faster than most—but ultimately... It was probably more of a bad habit than anything. Especially now that her workload wasn't half as crushing as it once was.

Stubborn as she tends to be, Kris isn't going to refuse such a nice gesture. And even if she can be a hardass about her lab rules, there is a table in the corner, well away from any equipment, to use for meals. (In theory, anyway. In reality, it was covered in loose papers and other less-than-critical material that she'd pushed aside for later.)

"Thank you. You're welcome to come in, if you'd like. I can clear out a place for you to sit. I should probably take a break, anyway."

I think you are right about both things!

In his fourth birthday vignette Malleus explains that he had multiple tutors for things like history and manners, but he was so much more powerful than his magic tutors that as a young child he would throw temper tantrums out of frustration and drive them away.

Malleus also mentions an unnamed "mentor" who would scold him most severely every time he drove off one of those tutors, and it is possible that that mentor was Lilia!

Malleus mentions Lilia cutting his hair, having him memorize a book about survival, singing to him at night and teaching him how to play string instruments, while Lilia himself says that he trained Malleus (in addition to Silver and Sebek), so it seems that multiple people including Lilia have been involved in Malleus' education! :>

All of these stories are part of my personal project Sparkle Star Galaxy, a Super Mario fanproject created by me and my sister @juliettelime . Excitement shone in her eyes as she looked up at her parental figure. "Thank you Dad!" Nova happily replied while investigating the item in her hands. Curiosity filled in when she picked up the part of it being a self defense weapon.

"Is this...also like a knife?" Nova asked, "Does that mean you'll teach me how to use it?"
