5. it is so awesome how long they live, sometimes even to 150 years. but, scientists believe, that only around 10% of whale sharks make it to adulthood :( so despite being able to grow to 63 feet at most or 30-50 feet on average, the average whale shark makes it to only 13 feet long because they die so young.

10. i think that you might only be counting elasmobronchii sharks, because(fun fact) there are either 512 or 535 species of sharks, it depends on who you ask. there are 23 species of sharks that arent officially considered sharks (yet?) and some scientists still count them :)

okay here are my own !!

1. there are more than 150 species of catsharks! my favorite is probably the chain catshark because of their bioluminescence and beautiful pattern. ghost catsharks and demon catsharks are also cool(i just like their name)

2. whale sharks give live birth to around 300 pups at a time, and they go to a location so remote and far away from predators that scientists have no clue where they go to give birth

3. catsharks curl up into a little ball when theyre threatened to protect their underbellies

4. sharks have very sensitive electroreceptors called ampullae of lorenzini, which are formed as a network of mucas filled pores in the skin of sharks and other cartilages fish! they are able to detect the electrical signals that their prey create

5. pacific spiny dogfish can live for more than 80 years, while atlantic dogfish only live around 35-40 years

6. whale sharks and nurse sharks are both orectolobiformes :) they have 5 gills, 2 spineless dorsal fins, an anal fin and spiracles(paired openings that let in water and filter their gills. theyre by the sharks eyes)

7. whale sharks can travel thousands of miles to different feeding grounds, but they only move at around 3 mph. theyre a migratory shark but they move so slow??

Wolfwood: i am torn between two different types of eels for him. giant morays are more aesthetically pleasing but personally i have to go with a wolf eel both for the name and because ive worked with these guys before and theyre sooooo cool so im biased

HELLO!! THANK YOU SM FOR ASKING!! I will happily share some Shark headcanons I have <33 Hopefully they all make sense I always have a hard time trying to formulate thoughts so !!!!!

- Shark was born a bastard child from the king! he was a year younger then Coral and something the Queen held distain for. She “graciously” (wanted to keep her public appearance) allowed him to stay in the castle but never officiated his title of Prince

- Him & Coral grew up really close! The Queen was often to overlook and mistreat Shark and Coral was quick to his defense. The two remained close throughout childhood and into early adulthood

- When Coral became queen she held a ceremony to officiate his status as Prince and a royal guardsman <3

- Fallowing in his fathers footsteps, Shark held a fascination with weaponry! He wasn’t the most keen on actually using said weapons, instead their construction, history, ex. When the war started he decided to put that knowledge to a higher use, raising the ranks along his good friend Commander Tempest, being her second-in-command due to skill, he became a council member of Defence due to nepotism though, much to his distain

- Despite his focus in the more tedious aspects of weaponry he did go to a training course for soldiers during his youth, there he met Tempest and the two became friends. He was a regular guardsman under Queen-Mother’s rule. The position of Guardsman is how he met Abalone and lived briefly as a semi-normal citizen & struck up romance with Abalone. They are gay married because I say so!!!!

- Due to his training & friendship with Tempest and her brother Gill, Shark is quite the Pacifist! Despite this he starkly believes that pacifism in war achieves nothing while warhawks hold power, resulting in his focus on primarily defense and ties in diplomatic measures. Hes a bit of a hypocrite though as he upholds his sisters rule

- He is deeply and incredibly concerned for his sister lmao. The two grew up very close and he feels he owes her a lot for protecting him during their youth & mentoring his daughter when he was unable to, but since becoming Queen and loosing Orca she’s definitely changed. Shark wants to support his sister but finds it hard as she becomes more like her mother..

- Shark questions Blister’s motives and worries on her influence to Coral. This is paired with the Dragonets of Destiny, fearing they will choose Blister as queen, he holds great distain for them and the power they wield.

- Whenever Blister comes to visit Shark used to try and sit-in on meetings and was known to casually disagree with the princess, he has since been banned from meetings despite being a councilmember due to his outbursts at the Sandwing </3

this (this being the tattoos-and-superstition story I've spoken about a few times before) is probably one of my favorite Hornblower fics, to the point where I've been working backward and forward on it for over a year as I try and fail to get it to be Just Perfect. trying to find the balance of exposition to explain the fantasy worldbuilding and actual plot has been very tricky with this one, especially as I haven't quite figured out just how either of those things works yet.

so right now, even though I like a lot of the current stuff I've written, I'm probably going to start over from the bones up, patching in the bits I liked from the first version as I go.

[SCRAPING SOUND AS A BIG CURTAIN IS DRAWN BACK]

basically, the structure that I have so far is 'too much exposition' -> [BIG HOLE] -> 'Bush wandering around in the snow' -> [SPOOKY DESCRIPTION I'VE NOT COME UP WITH YET] -> 'Bush having a long talk with a creepy thing' -> 'slapdash ending that's a little too goofy'

so the main points that need to get worked on are going to be streamlining the magic system and integrating the function behind it into the actual story (probably through some kind of opening Sailing Scenes), redesigning the creepy thing to fit better with the tone of the story overall, and of course, ironing the plot until it's nice and smooth.

I've had some difficulty managing stories with a larger cast in the past, and I think I'd like to push myself with this one and try harder to make the settings feel populated and living, which I think will be more compatible with the eventual redesign of the antagonist. I do think a face-stealing shapeshifter still meshes very nicely with Hornblower's Issues™️, but doesn't really work with the rest of the setting that I'm devising here. so it's back to the drawing board on the creepy thing, and I'm going to do a little research for inspiration before I settle on anything this time. rather than the face-stealer, I think a more standard Endless Barrow Party to get lost in/feel deeply uncomfortable at/charge boldly into on an ill-advised rescue mission will suit the two of them better.

and I'll probably have to pick a new title, as changing up the fairy-folk rules will mean that I lose the double meaning that made this particular one work so well. (it was always meant to be ambiguous whether it referred to Hornblower himself or to the face-stealer, since they're both hanging out somewhere in the middle of the sliding scale between husband and sea monster.) while it'll be a little said to break up my Boreas-lyrics tradition for Hornblower writing, I've been trying to switch to a snappier and more memorable titling system for some time anyway.

and if you're still here after reading all that, how about a scrap of the Exposition Brick that probably won't be coming back in the rewrite:

Entering the navy young had many its disadvantages, but one solid point in its favor was getting the ink-workings on you. They worked the best when they were drawn in as early as possible, it was said, and Bush had had his since he was barely eleven.

With so many ways a boy could die aboard ship, there was at least one surely preventable, if the right precautions were taken. The right knot in the right place, and they’d be tied down tight to the mortal world as well as human art could make them. There were other charms of much the same theory, hold-fast and love-stay-true and safe-at-sea, all with their own mark and their own meaning, but the faith men put in those, though strong, wasn’t nearly so hardy. Bush had seen nearly every other form of ink-workings fail at one time or another, but never these two, the sort given to the youngest and most likely to be stolen away.

He’d even heard the discussions among the hands, the boastful tales of a man claiming he’d nearly been spirited off as a lad, and would have been, too, if not for the marks on the backs of his hands. Sadder stories as well, for as he passed by on his rounds, he’d noted whispers of someone’s sister’s son stolen away, nephews and cousins and brothers gone under the hills never to be seen again. Why don’t they just put the protections on them proper-like, one man would say, and the other would shake his head, and mutter that such people couldn’t be reasoned with.

Whether it was that the ink-workings simply didn’t work on shore, or that the minds of those dwelling on land couldn’t wrap around a too-permanent way to keep their children safe, it still was that those on land went without the marks. Bush wasn’t sure quite why, nor did he himself understand exactly how the tattoos on the backs of his hands kept him safe. He was a plain sailor, not an artist or a witch, and he was content to trust rather than to make an attempt at unpicking the workings of the art.

To sum it up in a single word, no. It’s not common knowledge that Roman is a trans man and very, very few people are aware as to the truth. He was isolated as a child, only mingling with the children of a few rich families during important social events - something he never enjoyed going to as he considered the upper echelons to be just as fake and duplicitous as his parents. Some of those people remember that the Sionis’s had a child... but the family name soon died out and became irrelevant as Roman did not care to maintain those same connections his parents painstakingly cultivated upon succeeding his father as CEO of Janus Cosmetics, sticking purely to business only. Mr. Sionis never made it apparent to the company he had children since he never intended to leave the company to Roman, thinking he wouldn’t suffice as an heir due to not being the son he wanted. As soon as the man died, Roman automatically became next in line and by then had already asserted himself as male, looking every bit the part now he was free of his parent’s influence. Circe knew the truth and helped him present himself the way he desired, cutting his hair and styling his appearance to better suit his gender. Even after they fell out, she never outed him and Roman never killed her, though he did disfigure her after her “betrayal”. Tiffany found out while they were dating and did not care as she loved Roman for who he was, making her death very painful when the Joker killed her and stole his identity. Horsehead is one of the only members of his group who know Roman is transgender, along with another member of the original False Face Society, Jaws. Since his defeat at the hands of Batman, the GCPD became aware as to Black Mask’s true identity and sent him to Arkham Asylum to be dealt with as Blackgate lacked the facilities to safely house a transgender inmate amongst the male population, deeming it safer for both Roman (and others around him) if he were housed in more ‘secure’ confinement.

Xilixas mind maybe?

Xilixas's mind is...interesting. At first glance you might think it was a combination of three entirely different people. It's a mess of conflicting themes, and difficult to sift through if you don't know what you're looking for.

In what could be called one section, every available surface is cluttered with magazines and posters sporting depictions of models of all genders. Some of the images look as though they've been crumpled and smoothed back out again. There are polaroid photos pinned to a corkboard, but the faces in the photos have been scribbled over with black marker.

In another section, overlapping some of the magazines and posters, is an area containing a well worn punching bag. Taped to it is a picture of a face you almost recognize, but age and repeated wear has rendered it mostly lost.

Connected to both these areas is what can almost be called a house of mirrors. But instead of showing the looker in an unflattering light, these mirrors amplify the looker's good features, making them better looking - at least to their own eye. A vase of roses sits on an end table, forever waiting. A box of chocolates sits beside them. Both the roses and the chocolates have gathered a substantial amount of dust.

What is your favorite thing about your ship with @kenobiian?

can i say everything? because really i love everything. laura and i have written a lot of ships together over the years and i have loved each and every single one. but something about the amelia / obi wan ship is so different. i really think it comes from the fact amelia is an oc so the world building aspect is way more open, which is something both of us love to do. i would say a lot of our stuff is on discord, so tumblr really sees the more polished pieces. but everything from the spicer threads, to the throwing ideas back and forth, to the smaller headcanons that become interacted into threads and everything in between, it all brings me absolute joy.

but also as characters, amelia and obi wan are incredibly compatible, and perfectly matched, even with obi wan being a jedi. the fact he's technically more powerful than her is never anything that's an issue. even with all their differences they fit so well together. i think a lot of it has to do with amelia's character in general but that's another meta im working so i won't go into it here. but everything has become so interwoven that i cant just pick a favorite thing (tho i will say im a big fan of the spicy threads, and also the angst, which is absolutely heart wrenching and i have in fact cried multiple times over things. and i love it as much as it hurts me) anyways i say all the time there's an oc x canon ship supremacy and amelia and obi wan are a perfect example of what i mean by that.

Your Siren Boyfriend eventually tricking you into the water after weeks of just chatting to you on the docks. He never sings or tries to convince you to come in. He sits in the water, his arms propping him up on the low dock so you two can talk. His eyes dark as a trench, and you can’t help but worry about all the light on the surface hurting him. Even at night, it’s still brighter than where he’s from.

The night you bring him sunglasses is when he knows you’re going to be his mate. He feigns confusion and asks how to put them on. You giggle and lean forward, setting them on his face. He takes that moment to grab your wrists, yanking you into the salt water. You barely manage to catch a breath before hitting the water, not that it matters because as soon as he kisses you, you suddenly can breathe.

You want to be angry at him, but he looks so happy. He starts clicking and chirping, something he hasn’t done in a few weeks since he realized you can’t understand him. It must be like when you gets excited and revert to your mother tongue.

His shark teeth gently nip at you neck as he tugs at your clothes, encouraging you to slip out of your swimsuit. You know that you shouldn’t. This isn’t right. But you can’t help yourself. The feeling of your Siren slipping inside of you makes you whimper. He pushes you against the shifting sand of the ocean floor, slamming into you roughly. A child got left with me at work and im telling you. HE WAS THE SWEETEST! He showed me all his paw patrol figures - Sky was his favourite - and grabbed hold of my leg and helped me with all the customers till his sister + mum came back! He yelled out "We're here to help!" while i scanned tickets and oh my goodness!!!! oh my GOODNESS!!!!!! Pure happiness, he made my day. he was so sweet. Theres like a table behind me and he talked about all the stuff on it, and about his sister and gOSH DAMMIT,, i couldnt help but compliment his mum cause im telling you he was adorable and i still havent recovered.

THIS SWEET SUMMER CHILD!! #talking to customers is lovely but the kids?? oh they make my day #some girl showed up in a mermaid dress and i complimented her and she pulled out her drink and went “look see! it matches!” #and i found out she loves rainbows - SO SWEET. #and another girl watched the mario movie 6 times! her mother was like 'here we go again?' and her child was gushing about princess peach to #me - and these boys went in to see tmnt and i asked them about their favourite turtles and gushed saying cowabunger to each other #and this other girl went to see meg 2 and she told me all about sharks and her favourite sharks are whale sharks - so i asked her to see i #there were any in the movie - and when the movie was over she ran down to me and yelled “THERE WERE NO WHALE SHARKS!” and we talked about h #w dumb that was! and another girl went to see barbie and she gushed about the pink outfit she wore and i complimented her shoes and she #“THANK YOU!! THEYRE SPARKLY!! :D” #sometimes.... u need to go into retail to realise u wanna work with kids #just #theyre so precious babies

zombie by the cranberries - remembered this song when they used it in yellowjackets and immediately downloaded it to my phone fucking incredible song song of all time really

and my favourite animal is sharks!!! i love sharks soooo much and the whale shark is my absolute favourite i just think theyre neat!!!
