If you watched sotus after bad buddy then yeah, it makes perfect sense you hated it. Personally, I give myself the heebie jeebies whenever I remember I actually enjoyed sotus and 2moons back in the day (oh, the terror 🙀)

Since we're on the subject of Thai bl shows (the good, the bad, the ehhh let's forget it ever happened) :

🪤 What usually draws you in the most successfully? Do you decide to watch a show because of visuals/cinematography, plot, acting, or something else entirely?

🪃 Are you the type to drop a series when it gets too cringe or boring, or do you suffer through it till the end?

🛸 Is there any scene from any show that you'd like to wipe from your memory because of second-hand embarrassment?

SAdipjse that's understandable, anon. Actually, fun fact - I'm currently watching 2moons! I need a trashy (is that too mean??) show to watch rn because I have a ton of work to do, so it's working perfectly as background noise. Currently on episode 2, so far nothing's happened so. I guess we'll see!

🪤 - the first thing that draws me in is plot, for sure! If the plot is good, there's a high chance I'll want to watch it at some point. Also, character writing! This one isn't something instantly identifiable but before watching a show I'll typically do a quick search for a general public consensus, and if the characters are poorly written it's an instant no go. I can't play with them like dolls if they're not well written! Other than that, acting is a pretty low factor for me in deciding what to watch because I'm like, really bad at picking out what's 'good' acting and 'bad' acting?? I dunno, I never really find any acting bad per se. Visuals are also pretty low priority because again, I tend to think any and all visuals are really well done adoipfjesadf. I'm not a very refined palette person, you can tell.

I guess the tl;dr is the plot of any media is the most important thing in my opinion, closely followed by characters!

🪃 - most of the time I watch to the end but I'll skip most of the scenes, so I get a feeling of completion and the general gist of the plot but also. I don't have to watch the actual show. That's actually what I ended up doing with SOTUS and I fear I will do with 2moons soeijwespdgj

🛸 - OH MAN SO MANY. I've mentioned before I'm SUPER prone to second hand embarrassment so pretty much any mildly embarrassing moment I'll skip over (re The Eclipse, I still can't watch the scene in the locker room right before the accidental kiss - it's just. sdipfjsd.). If I had to pick one scene to completely wipe from my memory, though, I think currently that honor would go to Bad Buddy - specifically the main thread of episode 2 with the mistaken identity thing on the rooftop. I actually have not watched that whole scene because I literally cannot, but what little I did watch while skipping was...I'm sure it was cute and plot-important, just me personally I could not watch it.

I didn't know seven days was turned into a live action till your blog. I found it and watched it. Thank you so much. I loved the manga and they did an awesome job at the live action of it. Sure the hairstyles are ehhh but it reminded me so much of the manga so I'm super happy with it 😁

I'm new to bl and only started a few weeks ago because of the Thai love stage which I'm loving. Yes I also read the manga of that. I think kaownah and turbo and doing an awesome job at the characters and also there chemistry together is crazy good.

I agree that the Thai adaptation is EXCELLENT and I really hope we get more Thai versions and adaptations of yaoi (and BL manwha and webtoons) since Thailand is the only country that really takes time to put together quality longer versions. (But historically they do way better on story if they have an original y-novel or yaoi to work from).

Sometimes the shorter ones out of Korea and Japan do a good job but mostly (like the original Love Stage!! live action these feel too short and brief). One of the reasons Seven Days is so good is that it got a two part treatment.

You made me think I should do a blog post about top 10 Most Yaoi-sh BLs (that are still really good). So maybe that's my next fun project.

But for now, I'll simply say you are so lucky to be on the beginning of this journey, so much good content awaits you, and DEF go for Cherry Magic next.

omg yes!! i love the raven cycle! i started reading it last spring and as of now i'm about 75% through the last book (i'm a bit of a slow reader haha). i currently only reblog occasional non-spoiler trc stuff but once i finish the series i will probably be reblogging it more frequently 😁

and as for bl drama recs - i'm very happy to help! it seems like you mostly are watching thai shows - i think my top thai rec for you would be He's Coming to Me. It's got Ohm from Bad Buddy and Singto from SOTUS — plus it's made by the same director as Bad Buddy, so it's generally well done and handles queer topics well. it's a wholesome romance between a gay 90s ghost boy and the only person who can see him.

A few of my other favorite Thai BLs that I'd recommend are I Told Sunset About You, Lovely Writer, and Manner of Death. A couple thai shows that aren't BL but are DEFINITELY worth watching are The Gifted (feat. Nanon from Bad Buddy) and 3 Will Be Free (canon polytriad escape the mafia and fall in love, more queer than BL).

BL tropes, plots and all that fun stuff.

I want to post about something that my friend and I talked about before regarding bl tropes, pairings and plots.

So we are both fans of Earth Katsamonnat. His acting in UWMA specifically was amazing. Fluke Natouch is also another great one from the same series.

And from there my friend and I talked about pairings. I've become a fan the fluke earth pairing and I want them to be in a series where they are a pairing for one another? But we debated what kind of plot would be perfect for them.

We ended up agreeing that a friends to lovers route would be great. But to put substance in it, I also wanted to push forth the issue regarding heteronormativity in homosexual couples.

Look around the BL community and most if not all pairings you see will give you an obvious masculine and feminine individual (e.g., Ohm and Fluke, Kao and Earth, Podd and Khaotung).

And if not pairings with opposite energies, they mostly always end up with two masculine characters (e.g., Max and Tul, Mew and Gulf)

There are pairings that are more on the fence whether where to put them but they will surely end up in either of the two categories I stated above. Now what about two feminine guys as a pairing?

Also I know the issues surrounding labeling people like this but at the same time, you are joking if you yourself don't notice, or know how most if not all pairings are usually cooked up for BL series, specifically Thai BL series. Let's not kid ourselves here. Once that kind of thing ceases to be a popular thing, i'll drop this kind of situation.

Anywho, back to Fluke and Earth. We want a friends to lovers situation for them. But as a conflict, a masculine guy should be introduced as a third party, either liking Fluke or Earth, preferably in our convo that would be for Fluke and for ease of flow in this post let's go with that, and then having Earth not even considering the possibility that Fluke might like him back because two feminine gay couple as a relationship?

ALSO I WANT TO MAKE THIS CLEAR, THIS STORYLINE IDEA IS NOT ABOUT A FEMININE GAY GUY CHANGING HIMSELF AND BECOMING MASCULINE FOR LOVE.

I WANT THIS TO BE TWO SOCIETY-CONSIDERED-FEMININE GAYS IN A RELATIONSHIP, AND ACTUALLY HAPPY AND SEXUALY SATISFIED WITH ONE ANOTHER.

(I put in the importance of sexual satisfaction because we all know, acknowledge the importance of it in ships. Unless said characters are asexual, BL fans always ask who is the top and bottom of a couple, honestly I wish fans would shut up about it but ehhh clearly the fandom ain't gonna correct themselves on that one.)

Let me set the tone.

Let's say Earth and Fluke's character grew up in a society where most if not all gay couple representation in BLs they are exposed to show either two masculine couple or a masculine and feminine guys. So growing up Earth has this idea that Fluke's character prefers masculine guys. And Fluke's character thinks the same about his friend.

So masculine third guy enters and courts Fluke. Fluke is not that uber happy about it because duh he likes Earth, so he just lets it happen.

People around him teases him about it etc etc, including Earth who is just happy for Fluke superficially, because he likes Fluke secretly.

I want this tension to build up. The third guy inputting himself in Fluke and Earth's time. The third guy trying to get Fluke out on a date, Fluke and Earth having conversations about whether or not he should accept the third guy's feelings etc.

I want them to have a conversation about heteronormativity and how viewing homosexual couples just only with that perspective is not good (i.e. talking about who is the wife or husband in a relationship) and that just puts pressure on the individuals to act a certain way.

I feel like Studio WabiSabi is mostly likely the kind of company that tackles this kind of conversation.

I want the jealousy to build up in Earth's character until it hit the tippy top where he ends up just blurting or confessing to Fluke.

If handled well, with the right actors to play it, I can see this kind of storyline to be something I would definitely look forward to. 2020 has shaped to be a year of new budding BLs across the continent of Asia. So we personally think that if a storyline like this should ever exist, AND ACTUALLY END UP WITH A HAPPY ENDING, it would be this year or next, this generation.

Hell if I only have the money, I would've produced it myself but alas we don't shit gold.

Anywho that's just what I wanna put out there. I wanna see if there are any like minded people out in the community.

Honestly this might all just be an excuse to see EarthFluke together as a pairing but I like to think that I'm not THAT shallow (lies we all know I'm shallow as heck teehee)

thank you for the recommendations, I would definitely love some more! and I completely moved away from it too, though I could never really stop thinking about it or missing it altogether hah. and recently I've seen people talk about it again and stumbled upon metas and stuff and now there is a little voice in my head that says "maybe you shouldn't have given up" while another is shouting "have you lost your kind completely now" and yeah. lmao

i know, it feels like a breakup lmao. but if you wanna move on you have to find someone new i guess jkdfjs. in my opinion, or to me it doesn’t feel like a fun time to analyze it anymore so i’ll just start thinking about it if/when sth actually happens. there’s so many stories out there and shows that have actually delivered. but not a lot of them satisfy like the need for deep and meaningful storytelling. i have to say tho, idk if i was just having an emotional week when i was watching i told sunset about you, but that with the 5 movie length episodes that followed the 5 act story structure (ep 4 was fucking low man) was the closest to what sherlock could be. even tho the last episode wasn’t as amazing as i guess i was hoping, it was still really good overall, i was genuinely impressed. i’ll probably rewatch it some time.

a vietnamese movie: Goodbye Mother - a guy takes his bf home to vietnam, he’s not out to his family yet (it was pretty chill, a little sad but the grandma is a scene stealer) it’s on yt

thai bl-s are mostly kinda trash or meme-y and the writing is sometimes actually gringe but they can be fun. some are very questionable/problematic (tharn/type lol) tho lol but if you can write the questionable things out of the story in your mind then they’re watchable i guess. i usually watch them for the side couples bc the main couples are usually boring lol (the drama is unnecessary). the good thing about them is tho that there’s like ~3 gay couples in a show, like almost no one is straight, tho their storylines are sometimes abandoned. they’re all on youtube. some of the ones i liked are 

My Engineer (Ram & King are wholesome af, pm only watched it for them), 

Dark Blue Kiss (maybe the first one i watched that had a cohesive storyline and the side characters are cool, it has a prequel i think as well Kiss Me Again or sth like that), 

2gether (had to push through the first episodes but they’re both pretty much idiots so it was fun, they play guitar).
