How about tattoos for Jin goda and Yukio terada?
Tumblr media
The last of the requests from before the new year! Another request that required me to do a lot of new reading as I researched Korean myth and symbolism and it's connections to Japan for Terada.
Tumblr media
For Terada I chose the Shinto god of storms Susano'o (sometimes written Susanoo or Susano-o). Susano'o is a hero of Japanese folklore, and is the brother of the sun goddess Amaterasu. He is the slayer of the eight-headed, eight-tailed dragon Yamata no Orochi. Susano'o is depicted as a wild, violent man who is banished from heaven after destroying land and throwing a flayed horse into the house of Amaterasu. Despite being a native Japanese god, Susano'o has a unique connection to Korea, which is why I picked him for Terada.
One of the stories about Susano'o tells of him traveling to the land of the dead, which was posited to be on the Korean peninsula. Susano'o was also believed to be the progenitor of the Korean people, and their ancestry of a rough, wild god was used to help justify the colonization of Korea by Japan. I thought that this could be used both as a reference to Terada's Korean background, and the treatment of Korean immigrants by the Japanese, as well as serving as a sly slight against the Japanese for being the violent, uncivilized ones. Since Susano'o is a very well-known mythical figure in Japan, the Korean connection would easily go unnoticed by most.
For a flower I compared Japanese and Korean flower language to find something that would have some double meaning. I went with Lobelia which in Japan means modesty, excellence, but also malice; and in Korea symbolizes sophistication, but also mistrust, and resentment. This gives the Japanese meaning only an underlying threat, while the Korean meaning is more overtly hostile. Terada double crosses both the Tojo and Ryuji as his morals and desire for revenge shift and conflict within him. This ends with Terada making a last-minute decision to defuse the bomb in the Millennium Tower, saving Kiryu.
Tumblr media
I went back and forth on this one a lot. Goda is not on-screen for most of the game, but he serves as a major motivator for 2’s main antagonist, his son Ryuji Goda. I wanted something that contrasted and paired with Ryuji’s dragon, and was torn between the turtle and the phoenix. However, while phoenixes are depicted as the enemy of dragons, they are also pared with them in a symbol of wedded bliss, or an emperor and empress, so I settled on the turtle instead.
The turtle is one of the four celestial symbols, representing the Northern sky, and the elements of water and earth. They are known for their longevity, and are said to grow long tails made of algae when they reach particularly old age, gaining the ability to speak human language and foretell the future. Despite being one of the celestial symbols, along with the Vermillion Bird, White Tiger, and Azure Dragon, turtles are also the messengers of dragons, in particular the Dragon Kings that live at the bottom of the ocean. This would mean that Ryuji put himself “above” his father when he received his dragon tattoo, as he expresses wishes too surpass his adopted father in power even as a child in 0.
For a plant element, I went with pine needles. I wanted something culturally significant, and somewhat traditional, so I looked over the flowers and plants used in Japanese Hanafuda cards. These are the cards used for games like koi-koi (a mainstay of the Yakuza series) and have seasons as the different suits. Pine needles are associated with January in the game, and symbolizes life, longevity, steadfastness, and good fortune. They are known for their resilience and ability to withstand natural disasters, representing faith and perseverance. Goda shows strength despite his age, as well as wisdom and a desire for peace between the Omi and Tojo.

MAJIMA VERSES
Tumblr media
LAD0;
age 20-30
this verse mainly follows what happens in 0, but also includes the backstory i've written for majima in his bio, & anything that happens between 0 & 1. this verse mainly will feature majima as the lord of the night, he's manager of the grand, trying to work his way back into the yakuza. i will not be writing events that happened in the hole, just due to the triggering nature of it, but it may be referenced somewhat in this verse since majima is still very fresh from this experience.
LAD1;
age 31-41
majima is back into the yakuza, is captain of the shimano family. he is now quite ruthless given his experience in 0, he's got more acquainted with kiryu now, & sees the other as a suitable rival. he makes it his mission to make sure kiryu is built back up to where he was before kiryu was imprisoned for ten years. he has definitely embraced his mad dog in this verse & onward. at some point toward the end with shimano's death, majima is made into patriarch of the majima family.
LAD2;
age 42
majima decides to take his entire family, & leave the tojo clan, mainly because he has some differences to the current chairman; yukio terada, & to correct the wrongdoings of one of his men, ryota kawamura. he decides to create the majima construction company with the members of the family that followed him out of the clan. he takes over purgatory as the florist of sai relocates to the millennium tower which means majima pretty much controls what goes on in purgatory which is also the site he has picked out for his kamurochu hills project, which is honestly never really worked on, he spends too much time having turf wars instead. despite not being yakuza anymore, majima still finds himself fighting for the tojo clan when it is needed.
LAD3;
age 42-44
at the start of this verse, majima is still not back with the tojo clan despite daigo dojima now being the new chairman, kiryu meets with him on top of the millennium tower, agrees to fight him, majima reluctantly agrees to kiryu's pleas of coming back to the tojo clan, & back daigo dojima as the new chairman since he's quite young, & still quite new to yakuza, they fear that he might not be respected enough to make it as the chairman, but figures if they can get someone big to back him up, there shouldn't be any issue, kiryu could have easily re-entered the tojo clan instead, but he found majima to be more suitable for this task, as majima is, try as hard as he might to be a blue collared civilian, he still wouldn't fit into it, the man is literally made to be yakuza. he is once again a patriarch of his family. majima is suspected of betraying the tojo clan, but kiryu does not believe this, & chooses to meet majima in person to find out what's really going on, he got involved, but it was mainly for daigo, but was later blackmailed by hamazaki. majima has been working with the florist of sai in this verse, allowing the man to return to his old base of operations, later, majima is requested to take over the now headless kazama family, & gains their spot in the millennium tower.
LAD4;
age 45
from the prior verse, majima is now mainly located in the millennium tower, & his construction company have started to pick up the pace building kamurocho hills, a large skyscraper of a building that is intended for multiple uses ; mall of high-end shops, cafes, supermarkets, & the higher floors are mainly used for offices. majima is also on the trail of yasuko saejima, sister to his imprisoned soon to be executed oath brother, & somewhat of a sister to himself, he wishes to protect her as he knows she's in danger. he later hears the news that his oath brother, taiga saejima has broke out, & is now in kamurocho, he knows what has to be done so he has his men fight saejima, only once saejima has defeated a suitable amount of his men, majima makes his appearance, & has the both of them go to the batting center, having his entire family around kamurocho to assure there is no drama with the cops. they both fight to what they expect to be the death of either one of them, saejima wins, but spares majima's life ; majima has the chance to reveal to his oath brother that he didn't mean to betray him, & shows him the price he paid. majima is then eventually arrested, betrayed by daigo dojima, he allows kiryu to know that everything is connected. since he was wrongfully arrested, he gets out of prison quickly, & is there for his oath brother's inauguration into the tojo clan as a patriarch to the saejima family.
LAD5;
age 48
from the start of this timeline, majima's mad dog personality has entirely disappeared, & it is mostly because his oath brother has agreed to go back to jail, he allows this annoyance to even hinder his ability to play baseball at the batting arena. once saejima goes off to jail, majima is left to his own devices within the tojo clan, daigo who trusts majima's judgment most of the time, sends him off to help form an alliance with the kitakata family. during this visit, the seventh chairman, tsubasa orders an assassination on majima, he survives, but is injured. kurosawa has newspapers report majima as being dead, which majima uses to his advantage to make contact with his ex-wife, mirei park, & old friend naoki katsuya. they expect to lure out a traitor known as kamon kanai. having thought he was safe, kurosawa realises he didn't finish off the job, captures, & tortures the still injured majima, & eventually forces him to fight his oath brother to the death, despite having already been bloodied, majima is still a strong opponent towards his oath brother, & has even learned how to create dopplegangers of himself. majima makes it obvious at this point to saejima of why he refused to fight him before he went back to jail, simply because he didn't think saejima was strong enough to handle him. they fight to buy time for shinada to subdue haruka's assassin, & then both refuse to co-operate whenever kurosawa requests one of them to land the killing blow on the other.
note ; there is minimal interactions in this verse for muses other than saejima, kurosawa, & katsuya, oc & crossover muses are allowed, but be aware, majima is hiding as to keep the illusion that he is dead, he will not be walking around the streets of kamurocho, & he has dropped the mad dog act.
LAD6;
age 52
again, majima is seen angered at the start of this verse with saejima being forced back to jail, he is not exactly in a good mood for the duration of this verse until he & daigo are both sent to jail as well for the assumption that they were both involved in the little asia fire. he is sent to jail in early 2013, & is not released until 2017, only thanks to kiryu who bargains for their release. this is the first time majima has been sent to jail, he does get to meet daigo & saejima when they are made to work, but otherwise, they are separated, majima is mostly in solitary imprisonment due to his overly aggressive behaviour toward other inmates, & is watched closely on by the cops when he is allowed to spend any time with anyone else. majima does suffer some withdrawal symptoms due to the lack of cigarettes that he can get, he can get some, but not as many as he would like, so he is rather moody, & easy to aggravate. when released, in the car with daigo, & saejima, he is given a letter by daigo which was written by kiryu, daigo knows that majima, & kiryu are very close, & that it would be of majima's interest to read the bad news. that kiryu has died ; majima is in disbelief, he doesn't believe that kiryu is actually dead.
LAD7;
age 54
due to ryo aoki's kamurocho 3k plan, the yakuza, mainly the tojo clan is chased out of the city of kamurocho, so majima, daigo, & saejima go into hiding before they can be arrested, & made spent more time in jail. arakawa helps them make a plan, that he will play the role of the traitor, helping them make their escape easily. nick ogata who is a business associate of daigo's helps them in hiding for three years. they attend meetings with arakawa in the omi alliance hq when they can, planning on what is coming next. it is their wish to find something for the yakuza who are lost now. during one of these meetings, majima, along with saejima meet kasuga, & the gang by chance, mistaken for omi officers, majima, nor saejima care to correct the gang, but decide to humour the lot with a fight whilst holding back. they are about to have another fight, this time without holding back before daigo and arakawa appear to see what the noise is about, revealing to majima that kasuga is on their side. once watase, the current chairman of the omi alliance is finally released, & comes back, both reveal that the tojo clan, & omi alliance will disband ; this angers quite a number of the omi alliance men, & a fight breaks loose, mostly to protect watase. watase later goes onto helping them plan what to do now with the lack of there being any yakuza any more, & the group decide on opening a security firm within sotenbori, it isn't too far from what they did as yakuza, but it will be completely within the law, there will be no criminal activity, majima makes the suggestion that kasuga joins them to finish what his old man started, but kasuga politely refuses despite being baffled that majima dropped his mad dog act for once around him.
