Tattoo Headcanons: Kido, Someya, and Arai

@dorkydragon requested tattoo headcanons for these three characters! We have two of the central characters from 4: the loyal Kido and ambitious Arai, and from 6 we have Someya, a man with big plans haunted by a dark past.

Takeshi Kido

For Kido I chose a horse. Symbols of strength and self-reliance, horses were considered to be divine beings. A horse would be given to a temple to be raised for sacrifice in exchange for the favor of the gods. These horses are considered to be steeds reserved for the gods and no mortal is permitted to ride the horse while it lives. In modern times, images or statues of horses may be donated to a temple as an offering. 

I thought this worked well with how Kido is "sacrificed" by Arai for his own advancement despite Kido's loyalty. The native horse breeds of Japan are also considered critically endangered (some functionally extinct), after being near-completely eliminated by a post-war government decree to castrate the smaller native ponies in favor of "stronger" breeds. I thought this would be a nice reflection of the rarity of someone with Kido's loyalty and competence, and how he is nearly eliminated by a superior when he is deemed no longer of use.

As for a flower for Kido I chose ume plum blossoms, which represent nobility, fidelity and perseverance. A relatively simple, but strong choice for a character who is driven by his loyalty to Arai.

Hiroaki Arai 

For Arai I went with Takemikazuchi, a Shinto god of thunder, swords and the martial arts. According to Shinto myth, he imprisoned the giant catfish Namazu under a rock to stop the destructive earthquakes it was causing. Namazu has come to represent all types of natural disasters (now often used as a mascot for disaster relief) as well as the redistribution of wealth and other social "shake ups."

I figured that Takemikazuchi could be depicted pinning the catfish to represent both Arai's strength and conviction as well as his lofty ambition and rebellion against higher powers. So he is technically both God and the catfish, "pinning" himself as he chooses to work with the wrong people and abandon those who would actually support him.

For the flower I went with purple columbine, a striking purple and white flower that represents resolve and determination to win to reflect Arai's drive to gain power and succeed by any means necessary.

Someya Takumi

Someya is specifically shown to not have a tattoo, so we’re going a bit off-script for this! No matter, just because he doesn’t have a literal, physical tattoo doesn’t mean we can’t give him a spiritual one. 

Since Someya's entire reason for not getting an irezumi is to blend in with civilians, I chose the master shapeshifter kitsune! I've been saving this one for a while, as the kitsune is one of the most well-known Japanese yokai. There are countless legends of these powerful fox spirits, and they run the complete gambit in terms of temperament. Some are harmless tricksters, some are vengeful monsters.

 Someya is a complicated man. His pursuit of power made him ruthless, and poisoned his relationship with his wife, yet he is also a dedicated father who is willing to die to protect the ones he loves and repent for his past misdeeds. We also are told that despite his failures as a husband, he did try to be a good father to his and Kiyomi's daughter. White kitsune are powerful and benevolent, and there are many tales of them helping humans, including a few where white foxes are shown to be protective and loving parental figures - whether their children be kits or humans, their own or adopted. Tales where the fox ends up caring for a human child usually end with the fox having to leave suddenly after their true identity is discovered, which could also be used to reference Kiyomi suddenly leaving after the "illusion" of her happy marriage is shattered.

For a flower I chose calendula, which represents grief, loneliness, despair, and sorrowful partings to reinforce the regret he feels over his past.
