Teen Titans:Trouble In Tokyo Rewrite
Now as of lately I’ve finished my rewatch of teen titans the series and went on to watch the movie but like watching the movie so soon after the series made me realize how much they basically ruined everyone else’s character so they could make it the Robin show. But it also pointed out some flaws that from the show.
The Characters
I’m just gonna run then down in bullet points for you to speed this up.
Cyborg is suddenly a food obsessed and is has a way shorter fuse with Beast Boy.
Raven seems to have regressed to season 1 Raven and can’t stand Beast Boy even going as far as to physically abuse him.
Beast Boy is a complete idiot even when things are spelled out for him,is terribly unfunny, girl obsessed, can’t take things seriously to save his life, and sucks at fighting for some reason.
Starfire is a damsel in distress for robin to save multiple times in the movie, fights like she doesn’t want to hurt anybody, and gets knocked around more than she usually does.
Robin basically the same except for the fact that he can’t stop focusing on supervillains even though he learned his lesson in season 1 with the whole Red X and the apprentice thing.
But these are just the problems with the character that doesn’t even begin to speak to the flaws that were carried over from the show.
The Flaws
I’m just gonna list the flaws that are both in the movie and in the show.
The favoritism towards Robin (Which there is but I’ll talk about when I talk about the series)
The degradation of other core titans in favor of Robin (I was gonna just bunch this with the first one but realized they were different enough for their own spots)
Flanderization of characters
Comedy destroying tension
These are just some from the movie and show that are most important and important to my point today. But let’s get into the story of Trouble in Tokyo.
The Story
In Trouble in Tokyo the titans home is attacked by a Tokyo supervillain named Saico-Tek who says he was sent by a bigger supervillain named Brushogun. As such the Titans travel to Tokyo to track down this villain and when they arrive must adjust to the new place while also meeting police commander Diazo. When telling Diazo why they are there he tells them that Brushogun is a myth creating a mystery for the heroes. However afterwards they participate in Hijinks around the city and become accustomed to Tokyo. All except Robin who can’t let go of the Brushogun case but Starfire is attempting to use this vacation to have her and Robin become a couple.
This creates a rift as Robin wants to exclusively focus on Hero work and not relationships. She then leaves Robin after a failed kiss attempt. Robin then continues investigating the mystery of Brushogun when he is attacked by a pink Saico-Tek. He is framed after he accidentally a kills the Saico-Tek. He is then taken into custody and the other titans soon learn that he is in prison. They are also attacked by their villains but manage to escape.
Robin is then freed by a piece of ink turning into a bomb. He goes into hiding afterwards and looks for information about Brushogun. Here we learn that the Tokyo troopers make people be quiet about Brushogun. We also learn that Brushogun was real but just disappeared a long time ago. The Titans then regroup and we learn about the origin of Brushogun thanks to Raven finding a book about it. Essentially Brushogun was a artist who wanted his paintings to come to life and made a dark magic deal in order to make it happen.
They are then chased around the city by law enforcement, girls, and chefs. They eventually lose them and go into the manga company that is famous in this city. Here is where we learn that Brushogun was captured and forced to make supervillains. The obvious villain in Daizo is revealed. The ending final battle begins culminating in Daizo becoming a giant sized ink monster. Brushogun then dies in peace after being removed from the ink and Robin learns his lesson about letting his hero work take over his life.
Then finally after 5 seasons of will they won’t they bullshit Starfire & Robin finally kiss and get it on. The Titans are then awarded for their efforts to stop Daizo and the movies ends.
The Problems
So this movie has a lot of problems and is hella subpar compared to the animated series. So the main problems are the characters, the subpar story, and the failed mystery villain. Like come on we all knew Daizo was the villain the moment he showed up.
On top of that it made some character seem incompetent like Cyborg,Beast Boy,and Starfire. But don’t worry in this next session I’ll make some fixes.
The Fixes
I’m just gonna list off the fixes that are going to be added to the characters and fixes the flaws of the story.
All the Titans get to keep their characterization from the TV show finale. So that means Beast Boy isn’t being an idiot and looking to pick up chicks. Cyborg acts more like a second in command instead of a goof and treats his friend with respect. Raven doesn’t abuse her teammates and enjoys their company. Starfire is still a warrior and isn’t a damsel in distress. Robin is focused on the villain but not obsessed.
Daizo is shown to be a villain so no shadow and is meant to be a reflection of the consequences of obsessing over being a Hero.
The Titans aren’t complete pushovers and can actually fight and not just Robin. Beast boy will also being getting a moment in the movie.
The comedy is still there but it doesn’t destroy the tone of the movie.
But enough time to finally get into the rewrite of Trouble of Tokyo.
The Rewrite
First off let talks the time that the movie takes place. So the movie obviously takes place after the events of things change but more specifically a year after things change. So the Titans are older but are still not just the Titans yet. They also still carry the experiences of the show so they can keep their character development.
So now some of them have some design changes sorta with these designs but in the teen titans styles.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah the movie is where Robin finally becomes Nightwing and realizes the balance between being a Hero and a friend.
But let me just get into the story of and start already.
So yeah Saico-Tek attacks Titans tower and gets the titans attention however the chase scene is different in that Starfire doesn’t get saved by Robin,Raven isn’t unnecessarily rude to Beast Boy,and Starfire is the one who takes down Saico-Tek.
The scene where Robin interrogates Saico-Tek is basically the same and the part where they go to Japan is all the same. The real changes start to arise when the shadowy figure is shown. One major changes that’s gonna happen is that Daizo isn’t hidden as the villain. We know he’s the villain from the jump.So yeah he sends the Godzilla clone after the city and the titans spring into action. The fight doesn’t go the same as here they are able to actually fight and not seem like jokes. They actually manage to subdue the monster long enough for Daizo to cage it with the light beams.
Another change arises when Daizo introduces them to the facilities in Tokyo. Here when Robin ask for help with finding Brushogun. Daizo says he went missing and doesn’t know if it’s possible to find him. Robin shows him Saico-Tek’s ball and that inspires Daizo to say yes to helping them. (He’s only playing Robin) We also get to see some character from Daizo in that when he gets his award he like soaks that shit up.
The change for this part is that only Robin and Starfire stay doing the things they did from the movie. What the others are doing is that Cyborg is analyzing Saico-Tek’s ball with Daizo. Raven, and Beast Boy are actually paired up because he wants to show her that Managua company that is famous in this area. She goes along with cause remember there friends. But when the manga company is closed she goes off to look for a book with Beast Boy tagging along hoping to get some more manga.
The almost kiss scene happens the same with Starfire flying away after Robin says a hero is all he is. We then cut to Cyborg who is analyzing the ball and finally determines that it is made up of ink. He is then suddenly attacked and we cut away to Raven and Beast Boy stumbling upon the book store and leaving with the book only to be attacked by the Catgirl and Black Spirit thing.
We then cut away to Starfire who has her whole talk with the little girl and then is attacked by the Astro Boy copy and the fight ends with Starfire winning and flying off to regroup with Cyborg,Beast Boy,and Raven after getting a call from Cyborg.
We then cut back to Robin who is going to check in Cyborg and walks into the room only to find a bunch of ink stains and Daizo who is seems dead. The troopers then come into the room and put Robin in handcuffs. He goes quietly into the truck and is prepared to go to jail though he does try to defend himself.
He is then freed by the other titans and together they find a hideout with Cyborg letting the others know he was attacked by a pink robot that was made of ink. He also lets the others know that Daizo was helping the robot. Robin is confused and doesn’t understand why but then Raven tells the others the origin story of Brushogun.
This is another major story change with origin of Brushogun being completely different. The origin of Brushogun instead is that he was a normal person until his home was attacked by a group of raiders. So in an attempt to save his home,he made a deal with a higher power to give him the strength to protect him home in exchange for his eternal servitude. He was given the power to make his own soldiers to defeat the raiders.
The story then ends there. Robin hearing this story finally connects all the pieces. He then tells the titans to get out the room so he can change. When he comes out he is dressed in the Nightwing outfit.
(This suit to be specific)
Tumblr media
He then tells Beast Boy that they are going to visit the place he always wanted to visit. They then go into the manga company only to find a alive Daizo. He tells them that he is Brushogun and that once the raiders were gone he didn’t have any purpose in life left. He realized after a couple years he could just make his own villains and crush them. But he can’t let the titans just expose him and take that away so the fight between Daizo and the Titans begins.
The fight is pretty much entirely different as now they have to weaken Daizo while getting attacked by the troopers so they do pretty good. Up until Daizo pulls a frieza and says this isn’t my final form and turn into the ink monster without the giant tubes coming out from him. Now is the my personal favorite moment as in response to Daizo transforming. Beast Boy transforms into a organic version of that fake Godzilla from earlier. The end of the fight comes with Starfire flying through the giant grabbing Daizo and the explosion occurs.
Finally Nightwing finds her in the rubble of the ink monster. He admits he was wrong about a hero being all he is. This is because he saw the effects it had on Daizo. They finally seal the deal as Nightwing and Starfire kiss. The movie ends with the award ceremony like in the original.
Conclusion
In conclusion I think this movie does a lot more justice to all the titans and not just Robin. Finally gives some more closure to the original team instead of ending on Terra. On top of that we see a fully realized version of Robin and his journey to being Nightwing.

Robin Voice Comparison: Scott Menville (English) & Ezequiel Serrano (Latin Spanish)
Translation text by me, there isn't alot of changes to the original dialogue, but i still wanted to translate them. I couldn't insert alot of scenes & I had to make them shorter due to video size limit.
This video wasn't made as a competition on "which VA did it better", but as in how they interpret the character. I don't have a dub preference with the show since I love both & personally I think both VAs did a phenomenal job as Robin. Although Ezequiel's performance of the character will always be my favorite since he's the Robin I grew up with.
Some Fun facts:
-Both VAs are musicians, Scott: bassist & Ezequiel: singer, songwriter, bassist & guitar
-The LS dub of the show was made in Venezuela
-In 2008, Ezequiel retired from voice acting to focus on his music career, he currently has 3 albums: Tribop Vol. 1, Cabezón Key & 9 Cuentos Destarlados (Modesto Galán) and he'll be releasing his 4th album: Tribop Vol. 2 sometime this year (no release date atm, but fr his music is 🔥)
-Not only did Ezequiel voiced Robin, but he also provided the voice for Beastboy & Larry in the same show. Another popular character he voiced was Danny Phantom plus Dark Danny & also sang the opening theme song alongside Luis Miguel Pérez
