Venture predation
Tumblr media
Tomorrow (May 20), I’ll be at the GAITHERSBURG Book Festival with my novel Red Team Blues; then on Monday (May 22), I’m keynoting Public Knowledge’s Emerging Tech conference in DC.
On Tuesday (May 23), I’ll be in TORONTO for a book launch that’s part of WEPFest, a benefit for the West End Phoenix, onstage with Dave Bidini (The Rheostatics), Ron Diebert (Citizen Lab) and the whistleblower Dr Nancy Olivieri.

They said it couldn’t happen. After decades of antitrust enforcement against Predatory Pricing — selling goods below cost to kill existing competitors and prevent new ones from arising — the Chicago School of neoliberal economists “proved” that predatory pricing didn’t exist and that the courts could stand down and stop busting companies for it.
Predatory pricing — the economists explained — may be illegal, but it was also imaginary. A mirage. No one would do predatory pricing, because it was “irrational.” And even if there was someone irrational enough to try it, they would fail. Stand down, judges of America — predatory pricing is solved.
Chicago School economists — whose job (to quote David Roth) is to find new ways to say “actually, your boss is right” — held enormous sway of the federal judiciary. The billionaire-backed Manne Seminars offered free “continuing education” junkets to judges — all-expense-paid luxury vacations salted with lengthy your-boss-is-right econ seminars. 40% of the US federal judiciary got their heads filled up at a Manne Seminar.
For monopolists and other predators, the Manne Seminar was an excellent return on investment. After attending a Manne Seminar, the average judge’s legal decisions tipped decidedly in favor of monopoly, operating on the Chicago bedrock assumption that monopolies are “efficient,” and, where we see them in nature, we should celebrate them as the visible manifestation of the entrepreneurial genius of some Ayn Rand hero in a corporate boardroom:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/08/13/post-bork-era/#manne-down
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Even as post-Chicago economists showed that predatory pricing was both possible and rampant, a “rational” and effective strategy for cornering markets, suppressing competition, crushing innovation and gouging on price, judges continued to craft tortuous, unpassable tests that any predatory pricing case would have to satisfy to proceed. Economics moved on, but predatory pricing cases continued to fail the trial-by-ordeal constructed by Chicago-pilled judges.
Which is a shame, because there are at least three ways that predatory pricing can be effective:
Cost Signaling Predation: A predator tricks competitors into thinking they’ve found a new way to cut their costs, which allows them to drop prices. Competitors, fooled by the ruse, exit the market, not realizing that the predator is merely subsidizing their products’ costs to trick them.
Financial Market Predation: A predator tricks the competitors’ creditors into thinking the predator has a new way to cut costs. The creditors refuse to loan the prey companies the money needed to survive the price war, and the prey drops out of the war.
Reputation Effect Predation: A predator subsidizes prices in one region or one line of goods in order to trick prey into thinking that they’ll do the same elsewhere: “Don’t try to compete with us in Cleveland, or we’ll drop prices like we did in Tampa.”
These models of successful predation are decades old, and have broad acceptance within economics — outside of Chicago-style ideologues — but they’ve yet to make much of a dent in minds of the judges who hear Predatory Pricing cases.
While judges continue to hit the snooze-bar on any awakening to this phenomenon, a new kind of predator has emerged, using a new kind of predation: the Venture Predator, a predatory company backed by venture capital funds, who make lots of high-risk bets they must cash out in ten years or less, ideally for a 100x+ return.
Writing in the Journal of Corporation Law Matthew Wansley and Samuel Weinstein — both of the Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University — lay out a theory of Venture Predation in clear, irrefutable language, using it to explain the recent bubble we sometimes call the Millennial Lifestyle Subsidy:
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4437360
What’s a Venture Predator? It’s “a startup that uses venture finance to price below its costs, chase its rivals out of the market, and grab market share.” The predator sets millions or billions of dollars on fire chasing “rapid, exponential growth” all in order to “create the impression that recoupment is possible” among future investors, such as blue-chip companies that might buy them out, or sucker retail investors who buy in at the IPO, anticipating years of monopoly pricing.
In other words, the Venture Predator constructs a pile of shit so large and impressive that investors are convinced that there must be a pony under there somewhere.
There’s another name for this kind of arrangement: a bezzle, which Galbraith described as “the magic interval when a confidence trickster knows he has the money he has appropriated but the victim does not yet understand that he has lost it.”
Millennial Lifestyle Subsidy companies are bezzles. Uber, annihilated tens of billions of dollars on its bezzle, destroying the taxi industry and laying waste to public transit investment, demolishing labor protections and convincing people that impossible self-driving robo-taxis were around the coner:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/02/16/ring-ring-lapd-calling/#uber-unter
But while Uber the company lost billions of dollars, Uber’s early investors and executives made out like bandits (or predators, I suppose). The founders were able to flog their shares on the secondary market long before the IPO. Same for the early investors, like Benchmark capital.
Since the company’s IPO, its finances have steadily worsened, and the company has resorted to increasingly sweaty balance-sheet manipulation tactics and PR offensives to make it seem like a viable business:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/08/05/a-lousy-taxi/#a-giant-asterisk
But Uber can’t ever recoup the billions it spent convincing the market that there was a pony beneath its pile of shit. The app Uber uses to connect riders with the employees it misclassifies as contractors isn’t hard to clone, and it’s not hard for drivers or riders to switch from one app to another:
https://locusmag.com/2019/01/cory-doctorow-disruption-for-thee-but-not-for-me/
Nor can Uber prevent its rivals from taking advantage of the hundreds of millions of dollars it spent on “regulatory entrepreneurship” — changing the laws to make it easier to misclassify workers and operate unlicensed taxi services.
It’s not clear whether Uber ever believed in robo-taxis, or whether they were just part of the bezzle. In any event, Uber’s no longer in the robotaxi races: after blowing $2.5B on self-driving cars, Uber produced a vehicle whose mean-distance-between-fatal-crashes was 0.5 miles. Uber had to pay another company $400M to take its self-driving unit off its hands:
https://pluralistic.net/2022/10/09/herbies-revenge/#100-billion-here-100-billion-there-pretty-soon-youre-talking-real-money
Uber’s prices rose 92% between 2018–21, while its driver compensation has plunged. The company is finding it increasingly difficult to passengers into cars, and drivers onto the road. They have invented algorithmic wage disrimination, an exciting new field of labor-law violations, in order to trick drivers into thinking there’s a pony under all that shit:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/04/12/algorithmic-wage-discrimination/#fishers-of-men
To Uber’s credit, they have been a wildly innovative company, inventing many new ways to make the pile of shit bigger and the pony more plausible. Back when Uber and Lyft were locked in head-to-head competition, Uber employees created huge pools of fake Lyft rider accounts, using them to set up and tear down rides in order to discover what Lyft was charging for rides in order to underprice them. Uber also covertly operated the microphones in its drivers’ phones to listen for the chimes the Lyft app made: drivers who had both Lyft and Uber installed on their devices were targeted for (strictly temporary) bonuses.
Uber won’t ever recoup, but that’s OK. The investors and execs made vast fortunes. Now, normally, you’d expect company founders and other managers with large piles of stocks in a VC-backed company to be committed to the business’s success, at least in the medium term, because their shares can’t be liquidated until well after the company goes public.
But the burgeoning “secondary market” for managers’ shares has turned investors and managers into co-conspirators in the Venture Predation bezzle: “half of Series A and B deals now have some secondary component for founders.” That means that founders can cash out before the bezzle ends.
The trick with any bezzle is to skip town while the mark is still energetically digging through the shit, before the pony is revealed for an illusion. That’s where crypto comes in: during the cryptocurrency bubble, VCs cashed out of their investments early through Initial Coin Offerings and other forms of securities fraud. The massive returns this generated were well worth the millions they sprinkled on Superbowl ads and bribes for Matt Damon.
But woe betide the VC who mistimes their exit. As Wework showed, it’s entirely possible for VCs to be left holding the bag if they get the timing wrong. Wework blew $12b on predatory pricing — promising tenants at rivals’ businesses moving bonuses or even a year’s free rent, all to make the pile of shit look larger and thus more apt to contain a pony. The company opened its co-working spaces as close as possible to existing shops, oversaturating hot markets and showing “growth” by poaching customers through deep subsidies, then pretending that those customers would stay when the subsidies evaporated. But Wework’s “product” was temporary hot-desks, occupied by people who could (and did) move at the drop of a hat.
To its competitors, its competitors’ creditors, and credulous investors, it appeared that Wework had developed some kind of “efficiency advantage” — a secret sauce that let it sell a product at a price that was far below its rivals’ costs. But once Wework filed for its IPO, its S-1 — the form that discloses the company’s finances — revealed the truth. Wework’s only “advantage” was the bafflegab of its cult-like leader and the torrent of cash supplied by its VCs.
Wework’s IPO was a disaster. After canceling a real IPO, the company eventually went public through a scammy SPAC, saw its shares immediately tank, and continue to fall, as its balance-sheet is still blood-red with losses.
Another Venture Predator is Bird, the company that flooded American cities with cheap, flimsy Chinese scooters, choking curbs and sidewalks. 25% of the gross revenues from each scooter ride had to be written off as depreciation on the scooter. As a Bird spokesperson told the LA Times: “There are very few unique companies for which you can build global scale really quickly and build a dominant market position before other people do, and for those rarefied companies scaling quickly matters more than short-term profits.”
Bird was another company that could never recoup, whose executives and investors could only cash out if they could maintain the faint hope of the pony underneath its pile of shitty scooters. It drove the company to some genuinely surreal lengths. For example, in 2018, I reported on the existence of a kit that let you buy an impounded Bird scooter for pennies and retrofit it to run without an app, so you could take it anywhere:
https://boingboing.net/2018/12/08/flipping-a-bird.html
Shortly thereafter, I got a legal threat from Linda Kwak, Bird’s Senior Corporate Counsel, claiming that publishing a link to a website that sells you a product you install by unscrewing one board and inserting another was a violation of Section 1201 of the DMCA, which was an astonishingly stupid claim:
https://www.eff.org/document/bird-rides-takedown-boing-boing-dec-20-2018
It was also an astonishingly stupid claim to make to me, a career activist with 20 years experience fighting DMCA1201, a decades-old professional affiliation with EFF, and a giant megaphone:
https://boingboing.net/2019/01/11/flipping-the-bird.html
But Bird was palpably desperate to keep its bezzle going, and Kwak — an employment lawyer with undeniable deficits in her understanding of copyright and cyber-law — was their champion
Fascinatingly, one thing Bird didn’t worry about was competition from Uber and Lyft, who piled into the e-scooter market. Bird circulated a (leaked) pitch-deck reassuring investors that Uber/Lyft weren’t gunning for them, because they ““won’t subsidize prices” as they prepared for their IPOs, which involved disclosing their finances to their investors.
Bird’s investors either lost money or made small-dollar returns, but they were outfoxed by Bird founder Travis VanderZanden, a superpredator who cashed out $44m in shares just as the VCs were piling in.
Venture Predation is another stinging rebuttal to the Chicago School’s blithe dismissal of Predatory Pricing as an illusion. Private firms — of the sort that VCs back — whose boards are made up of founders and VCs who stand to benefit from the pile-of-shit gambit are perfectly capable of spending huge fortunes to make Predatory Pricing work. VCs make a practice of repeatedly co-investing in businesses together, which fosters the kind of trust that allows for these gambits to be played again and again.
For later stage, pony-thirsty investors who get stuck holding the bag, the lure of monopoly profits is both powerful and plausible — after 40 years of antitrust neglect, monopolies are the kinds of things one can both attain and defend (think of Peter Thiel’s maxim, “competition is for losers,” or Warren Buffett’s terrifying priapisms induced by the mere thought of businesses with “wide, sustainable moats”).
In a world of Facebook and Google, dreaming of monopolies isn’t irrational — it’s aspirational.
VCs are ideally poised to play the Venture Predation gambit. They are risk-tolerant and need to cash out over short timescales. What’s more, VCs’ longstanding boasts of their ability to identify companies who have invented new, super-efficient ways to do boring things like “rent out office space” or “provide taxis” gives the pile-of-shit pony-pitch a plausible ring.
The Venture Predator gambit isn’t just a form of plute-on-plute violence in which billionaires fleece millionaires. Like any anticompetitive scam, Venture Predators are able to pick winners in the marketplace — rather than getting the taxi or the office rental service or the scooter that serves you best, you get the scammiest version.
Workers who are roped in by the scam also suffer — the authors raise the example of a cab driver who leases a car to drive for Uber, based on the early subsidies the company offered, only to find themselves unable to make payments once the bezzle ends and Uber starts clawing back the driver’s wages.
Then there’s the cost to society: during the decade-plus in which Uber was pissing away the Saudi royal family’s billions subsidizing rides, cities dismantled their public transit, even as residents made decisions about where to live and work based on the presumption that Uber was charging a fair, sustainable price for rides.
The authors propose a bunch of legislative fixes for this, but warn that none of them are likely to get through Congress or the Manne-pilled judiciary. But they do hold out hope for a proposed SEC rule “requiring large, private companies to make basic financial disclosures.” These disclosures would make it impossible for companies to pretend that they had built a better mousetrap when all they had was a bigger pile of shit.

Crypto Scams and Fraud - How to Avoid Common Pitfalls
Crypto scams are a growing problem, with victims reporting losing more than $1 billion worth of crypto in 2021 alone. Criminals use social engineering techniques to impersonate financial advisers, company representatives and even celebrities in order to convince you to hand over your cryptocurrency or personal information to them, or send it to a fake digital wallet they control. And because your cryptocurrency is gone for good if you lose it to fraud, preventative measures are crucial.
Fortunately, there are many common crypto-related scams that you can watch out for. They typically fall into two categories: Socially engineered initiatives aimed at obtaining your account or security information, or a scheme to trick you into unintentionally revealing access credentials for your crypto wallet (which could lead to theft of your cryptocurrency).
Tumblr media
For example, criminals might send you a bogus job offer that promises you’ll make lots of money mining or selling crypto in exchange for upfront fees. They might also try to trick you into depositing a check, which they’ll then steal, by telling you it’s for a purchase of crypto.
In addition to tech ogle the social engineering tactics, scammers are attracted to crypto due to its lack of regulation and the pseudonymity of transactions — even illicit ones — which are difficult for authorities or banks to track. They’re also easy to convert to fiat currency and use for other purposes, and they often employ rich obfuscation and encryption technology to conceal their identities and the origins of their schemes.
Crypto scammers frequently target people who are new to crypto and use scare tactics such as high-risk returns or the threat of losing your investment if you don’t act quickly. They also use celebrity photos without consent or other images of high-profile people to sway your decision to invest in their project. A good way to assess the legitimacy of a project is to read its white paper, which lists the developers and other important details about the tech behind the cryptocurrency.
If the white paper is poorly written or contains grammatical errors, it may be a red flag. You can also search online for the developers’ names and see if they’ve been involved with any other projects that turned out to be fraudulent. In addition, if you are being pressured to invest immediately, it’s probably a scam. No legitimate investor can guarantee you’ll earn a certain amount in a short period of time or that their project will be successful, so beware of anyone who does. If you are concerned technology website that you’ve been targeted by a crypto scammer, report it to the FTC or contact your local law enforcement agency. They may be able to help you recover your lost coins. And don’t forget that you can always move your crypto to a more secure exchange if you suspect your account has been compromised. You can also change your passwords if you’ve been locked out of your wallet. For more tips on how to keep yourself safe, read our article: Crypto Scams and Fraud: How to Avoid Common Pitfalls.

How To Build SaaS Software Faster in a Limited Budget
Over the past few years, SaaS technology has become the talk of the town, even if you're not aware of it. According to a study, over 86% of businesses will rely exclusively on SaaS apps by the end of 2022. Several products have changed the way businesses used to operate in the past, such as Zoom, Google Docs, Trello, and Slack. So, the question is how to build a successful SaaS product faster and on a limited budget.
And how can SaaS products help you make money, or if it is a good idea to get them developed? Well! The right answer is YES! SaaS offers numerous growth opportunities for modern businesses to help them grow and scale while staying on the minimum budget. So, if you are looking to build a SaaS product and want to know how you can create SaaS software faster within a limited budget, then this blog is for you.
In this article, we have come up with the most effective tips and tricks that will help you learn how to build SaaS software faster on a limited budget. So, without taking much more time, let's get into it!
Tumblr media
SaaS Product Market Overview
There wasn't much demand for SaaS products five or ten years ago, but they are now becoming more popular, and businesses are investing in them. According to Gartner, SaaS software adoption is a significant driver of the rapid growth in custom software, with a 10.5% growth in 2021.
Building SaaS products in 2022 is a strategic move that will pay off soon for entrepreneurs, and 88% of business executives will do so after 2021. By the end of 2022, Statista estimates that the SaaS market will be valued at $171,9 billion, up from 145,5 billion USD in 2021.
Therefore, it is not unreasonable, given the market growth that has been demonstrated thus far. SaaS markets in the US rank at the top of the list, but if you look at the market from a long-term perspective, Asia-Pacific has a more significant profit margin.
Let's now get into the tips and tricks to create SaaS software faster and on a minimum budget.
How To Build SaaS Software Faster on a Limited Budget?
Follow the proven tips below to get your next SaaS software product developed much faster and at a lower cost.
Reduce complexity for faster deployment
It may take longer to develop software if the project requirements or architecture are complex. It is also not always true that the team size impacts the project's complexity. Software is built faster with fewer people when it comes to simple newsfeed-like applications, for example. Since Uber-like apps have several independent modules for drivers, customers, and administrators, these applications require the most significant amount of time to develop it.
In addition, your product teams must work on architecture modules simultaneously so that you can speed up the development process. To move forward, your teams will need to finish each model step by step, which means that project complexity affects the overall timeline and cost.
Consider a software development partner with no more 6-hour difference
A 6-hour difference between you and the outsourcing development team can leave you with 2 working hours of overlap between your time zones. It is usually sufficient to catch up on daily projects and discuss updates on further developments. So, it will make your workflow even more complicated if there's a more than 6-hour difference.
Adapting to schedules means starting earlier or finishing later, depending on the circumstances and the differences in time zones. That may not seem significant, but SaaS projects take an average of 3-6 months to develop. It means that it will negatively impact your communication and increase your development time, which will ultimately increase your costs. Therefore, keep track of time zone differences to reduce development time and cost.
Choose the right technology stack
Choose the most advanced and least popular tech stack if you can, but be aware that it may cost you much more time to find developers who can handle it. The price of their skills will also be higher because of this. And it is a matter of supply and demand! Consider choosing a tech stack that speeds up development if you want to monetize your app as soon as possible.
However, it is possible to reuse components with just minor changes between the front end and the backend in Ruby on Rails, for example. It can save time when building similar features from scratch. Therefore, you should ensure your product is scalable if you are planning to expand its features, especially when creating a tool from scratch.
If you are planning to change your software in the future, choosing a tech stack that allows for maximum scalability is crucial. I will reduce the cost of future changes and possibly save you from having to rebuild it. It is one of the main reasons that developers spend time and resources fixing bugs, which is why your tech stack should be capable of handling them appropriately.
Furthermore, TDD (Test-driven development) is one of the most effective ways to prevent bugs. And using a TDD-friendly tech stack can help you avoid such challenges more quickly.
Create a list of important tasks
You will be able to reduce the effects of your budget on all areas of your company, including development, marketing, and operations. This will be possible as soon as you start generating revenue from your SaaS. A Minimal Viable Product (MVP) in place when launching your startup business will allow you to monetize it faster.
To build a high-quality SaaS on a limited budget, you can source the most talented developers with a small budget from a reliable SaaS software development company in India. Depending on how many features you want in your app and how complex they are to develop, you will be charged more for app development.
Therefore, you should focus on the product's core features that will convince your customers that it is worth their money to reduce development costs and time.
Consider the right pool of talented developers
It's important to consider outsourcing versus keeping your SaaS in-house team if you're just starting out developing one. And it may seem easier and more sustainable to build a team of developers in the long run. However, if a startup company needs to ship its tool to market quickly and build it from scratch, it may not be the best option.
So, you shouldn't look only at hourly fees when comparing outsourcing and hiring. Your development team needs to be assembled, your developers need to be trained, and then your product needs to be built. Furthermore, you should factor in the costs of renting office space, equipment and tools, public contributions, and recruitment.
For example, the German government requires paid leave of 30 days per year. Thus, outsourcing experienced developers with core technology expertise can help you monetize your product faster as they will be able to launch it faster and more quickly.
Rely on 24/8 development pipelines
You can also implement a cyclical support and development workflow by organizing your so-called '24/8 development' pipeline. You would accomplish this by converting the small overlaps in your support and development processes into cyclical systems. For instance, a difference of 9 hours between you and the vendor minimizes the efficiency of interactions and discussions regarding the project updates- and this is because you are in California, and the vendor is in Luxembourg.
However, It's possible to create a project development workflow that runs almost non-stop. Here's how it works: your in-house team is working 8 hours per day one by one, while your vendor's outsourcing team is working 8 hours daily. To keep the other team updated on the progress of the project, one team prepares a daily report at the end of the working day.
The Luxembourg-based team, for instance, finishes their working day at 9 am, which means your product team starts at 9 am. As a result, you minimize project idle time and establish a development pipeline that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Implement CI/CD Pipelines
Software developers need to practice continuous integration and deployment, which means daily or weekly integration of changes into a shared repository. The automated verification process for each integration helps detect possible errors and bugs more quickly. Every time new functionality is added to CI/CD, it is then integrated into the process.
Thus, it is simply a way of automating the software release through continuous delivery/deployment. It is important to remember that CI/CD pipelines are fundamental to DevOps operations, as they lead to high development velocity. Moreover, these tools assist in building software more efficiently by minimizing manual errors, increasing iteration loops, speeding up feedback, and ultimately reducing SaaS software development costs.
Get Client Feedback
Developing SaaS products does not always lead to immediate success- you should test them out before launching them. Encourage users to provide feedback early in the process using Google Forms or in-app feedback. If you wish to extend the free trial for your users, you may invite them for an interview and ask their personal opinions about your product.
So, you'll have to iterate your product several times before it becomes a final product. After launching the software product to the market, it is important to gather feedback from clients frequently to make further improvements and updates.
Get reviews before scaling the product
Now is the time to create an effective marketing plan that will enable you to scale lead generation once your product has been validated with your target audience. And you should collect testimonials from your potential customers before you launch paid campaigns on your social media channels.
It may require you to ask two core questions while sending a request for a SaaS tool review. Are there any problems you have solved with this product? How would you feel if you no longer had access to this product?
To make it easier, utilizing online review platforms such as Trustpilot or Capterra can make the process of collecting reviews easier and can also be beneficial for your search engine optimization.
Conclusion
You should launch your SaaS product as quickly as possible to get feedback from customers if you are developing a product on a shoestring budget. The outsourcing process is faster than building a technical team in-house if you also have a low budget and a short timeline for completion. Choosing developers is only the first step; you must also opt for the right tech stack you want to use to scale your app quickly in the future.
Thus, building a product that evolves with your users' needs depends on collecting and documenting customer feedback after launching the product to the market. Moreover, you'll want to scale your marketing efforts when the market validates your SaaS so that you can maximize product sales and improve ROI.

The Top Cybersecurity Trends of 2022
Tumblr media
What were the top tech and e-security trends of 2022?
What can be said about 2022 that hasn’t already been said? You’ve likely already been inundated with perfunctory retrospectives on the ‘year that was’—the Ukraine War, Elon Musk, inflation, midterms, Kanye West, ‘the slap’, Messi, et al. But I would like to think that 2022 represented a year of profound transition and one that set us up so we can reasonably hope for greater peace and economic stability in 2023 and beyond.
Recall our optimism from early 2021 when we stated that we were on the verge of a brave new decade: the “Soaring 20s.” We at Tech Essentials still believe that may come to pass (albeit a bit delayed) and that events in 2022 may well pave the way toward better times.
My personal predictions for 2023: a cease-fire in Ukraine, slow but gradual reductions in inflation combined with (hopefully) fewer Fed rate increases, a stock market rebound, a US Women’s World Cup championship, and, of course, many new and exciting features and products from RPost!
And with that sanguine outlook, I’d like to turn back to some of our most popular Tech Essentials articles from the past year.
Back in January, many of us were still working from home indefinitely, and our article on Mastering the Art of Remote Communications and its tie in to the Star Wars universe got some very positive attention. At the time, “Zoom fatigue” was running rampant, so any tips and tricks that could help us more easily get to the finish line with remote work arrangements were appreciated.
Our ongoing series on Business Email Compromise (BEC) attacks received praise across industries, and our single piece about How to Prevent BEC Attacks published at the outset of the 2022 baseball season highlighted the dangers of “nice guys finishing last.” Unfortunately, you can be too nice when confronted with imposter emails asking for a favor or request.
2022 was a year that saw (terrifying) improvements in deepfake technology—where scammers leverage machine learning and AI to manipulate audio/visual content in real time to trick unwitting victims into forking over bank account numbers and sensitive password data. Deepfakes are even being used to interview for and get remote jobs, and our piece on Your Newest (Fake) Remote Employee May Already Be Wreaking Havoc raised some necessary awareness among our customers and friends. Fortunately, we had already launched the RSecurity Human Error Protection Suite to tackle this and other cutting-edge scams.
A major theme we covered in the second half of the year was the concept of PRE-Crime. Movie fans may recall that 2022 was the 20th anniversary of the Minority Report where a future police agency is tasked with identifying people who will commit crimes before they are actually committed. In a similar vein, we discussed How to Prevent Cybercrimes Before They Potentially Happen by leveraging RMail’s PRE-Crime suite. These features thwart BEC attacks that lure people into sending an invoice, investments, escrow, or procurement payments inadvertently into cybercriminal bank accounts.
Finally, we heard that our listicle, Top 5 Insurance Tech Issues & Insights from AppliedNet at Optimize!22, was very well-received by our insurance customers and partners. In this piece, we discussed how elegantly easy email encryption means bliss for intended recipients in addition to advice on how to implement an eSignature solution without all the rationing.
We hope you (re)enjoy these popular articles from 2022. Happy New Year! As always, feel free to contact us to discuss how RMail, RSign, RDocs, and RForms should be in your tech toolbox for 2023.

2023 BMW M2 First Look: M3 Power Without the Weird M3 Looks
New Post has been published on https://medianwire.com/2023-bmw-m2-first-look-m3-power-without-the-weird-m3-looks/
2023 BMW M2 First Look: M3 Power Without the Weird M3 Looks
Tumblr media
Remember when the current BMW M3 and its flared nostrils was revealed for 2021 and we all began to worry that every new BMW beyond could wear ever more controversial styling? Well the 2023 BMW M2 coupe is here to challenge that assumption, trading the M3’s wild dual snorters for smaller, more traditionally sized kidney grilles. That’s good, even if everything else on the nose carries strangely blocky detailing relative to the regular 2 Series coupe. It might not be hugely attractive, but it lacks a focal point for haters to fixate on.
Anyway, even though the 2023 BMW M2 marks the second generation of the most brutish 2 Series coupe, it isn’t a complete blank-slate job. Just as BMW claims, the rest of the M2 package largely mirrors (and builds on) the “winning formula” of the previous model—taking some of the suspension and engine bits from the BMW M3/M4 and putting them in to the smaller 2 Series package.
M3 Power!
That means the new BMW M2 features the same S58 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine found in various other M models. Here it is tuned for 453 horsepower—about 48 hp more than the previous model and 9 hp more than the 2020 BMW M2 CS, and just 20 hp shy of the base M4 coupe. Max torque is 406 ft-lb and is available between 2,650 and 5,870 rpm.
A six-speed manual gearbox will be standard equipment—yes!—and the M2’s available automatic switches from a dual-clutch unit to a traditional eight-speed torque-converter unit. Like other recent M models, the 2023 M2 comes with a few neat drivetrain tricks. A “Gear Shift Assistant” will automatically match revs for downshifts on the manual, and the Active M differential allows for several selectable driving modes. There are also 10 levels of DSC (dynamic stability control) intervention to choose from.
There also is an M Mode button, which is essentially puts track mode one steering-wheel-button-press away, reducing all the electronic babysitters in the pursuit of track performance. To keep track of said track performance is an M lap timer which is fairly self-explanatory—time yourself! More interesting to us is the return of the M Drift Analyzer which will actually record the duration, distance, and angle when the driver is sending it sideways; we’ve played with this in the new M3 and M4, and it’s an addictive way to up your spending on replacement rear tires.
Unfortunately, all of these new features and the tech-y new interior features like curved displays and eSIM capability (new to the regular 2 Series Coupes for 2023), all add weight. Therefore the new M2 coupe tips the scales at 3,814 pounds for the six-speed manual and 3,867 pounds when equipped with the eight-speed automatic; at least comparing the manual transmission versions, that represents a weight increase of about 300 pounds relative to the 2016 model. A carbon fiber roof can be optioned to shave a few pounds.
So, About that Design
OK, we’ve stalled long enough—it’s time to talk in greater depth about the 2023 BMW M2’s design. It isn’t a complete shock since the camo-wrapped prototype has already made the rounds, but now we can take in the full effect of the M2’s unique, highly three-dimensional façade.
The M2 mercifully does not inherit the current M3 and M4’s massive kidney grilles that dominate those cars’ front fascias, but they are frameless—meaning the body-color surrounds just sort of jarringly end where the grille opening begins. Easily the most noticeable features are the very prominent square intakes that flank the front air dam, quite a departure from the base 2 Series coupes’ triangular pieces. While not the worst of the modern BMW bunch, here’s our rub with the M2: The regular 2 Series Coupes represent a relative high point of styling restraint for the Bavarian brand, which places the fussier M2 in slightly less flattering relief.
Elements of the previous model can still be found in the 2023 M2’s overall appearance. It becomes especially apparent when looking at the 2023 M2 in profile. The short overhangs, wide wheel arches, and defined rear diffuser are all there. Visually, the small sports car looks about the same in all dimensions but at 180.3 inches long, 74.3 inches wide, and 55.2 inches tall, the new M2 is 4.1 inches longer than its predecessor, 1.3 inches wider, and 0.3 inches lower.
The 2023 M2 will offer five hues, with two of them being solid colors and the remaining three metallic finishes. The shade you see in the official release images is Toronto Red metallic. Black Sapphire metallic, Brooklyn Grey metallic, Alpine White, and the new exclusive Zandvoort Blue are among the available color options.
Before you jump to arguing on Reddit over the way this M2 looks, consider that it will have a base price of $63,195 when it launches early next year. That’s not much more than a loaded-out 382-hp M240i coupe, and it’s a few thousand bucks less than an entry-level, non-Competition-level M4, while being smaller and delivering similar power—and, based on our experience behind the wheel of an M2 prototype earlier this year, should provide an absolute riotous driving experience.

— GOJO SATORU + KYOTO TECH STUDENTS || GOJO’S CIVILIAN S/O BEING A PARENTAL FIRGURE TO THE KYOTO STUDENTS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
↳ featuring : gojo satoru + the kyoto side from jujutsu kaisen
↳ warnings : grammar issues
↳ form : headcanons
↳ published : 23 may
↳ pronouns : she/her
↳ request : Hello, good day and good evening, I hope you are doing well. A while ago you made a civilian s/o with Gojo and how the tokyo students see them as a parental figure. If it's no trouble, could you also include how the Kyoto branch would be as well? I'm curious of how would he students, Utahime and Gakuganji would treat gojo's civilian s/o. :3c
↳ barista’s notes : this is going to be the last headcanon for today and tha i hope you enjoy your cup of classic black coffee and please return when you can ╲ʕ·ᴥ· ╲ʔ
Tumblr media
Now that we have established your relationship with the Tokyo side of the Jujutsu Tech establishment, let’s see how you are to the Kyoto side.
The person that admires you the most has to be Miwa because she sees you as someone that is perfect for Gojo even if she does have a tiny MASSIVE crush on him.
She will ask you for tips and tricks on how to become more powerful since you are able to fight for yourself due to the training Gojo gives you - it will bring horrible flashbacks for you - but she does admire your bravery to be with him since you are a civilian that didn’t know anything about curses until he came into your life.
Since we know Miwa does have a few younger brothers, she loves how you take care of them and make sure they are well since she did mention to you once that she was poor.
Mai actually took a while to warm up to you since you were just a civilian that was just like Maki, who can’t see curses (she did degrade you for some time, I can’t lie)  However, once she saw how you were like with Maki, she did become somewhat jealous because her older sister now technically had a parental figure.
So when you come over with Gojo or when she visits Tokyo Jujutsu Tech, she will make the effort to come up to talk to you since you did tell her to ‘take her time’ and with one pat on the head and a sweet smile, she is instantly hooked onto your arm.
Now since Mai and Miwa had a good relationship with you, Nishimiya already has a protective aura around you because of her views on women being treated unfairly in the jujutsu world and since you were just a civilian, she is more worried about you since you are one of the reasons why Mai gets to smile again and one of the only people that sympathise with her because you understand her point of view - she is, on the low, scared to lose you.
Now with the boys, Todo is someone that respects you since you are quite brave for being with the Gojo Satoru but you are his one way to contact Okkotsu to ask him for a re-match.
No matter what, when he sees you, he will always greet you with a smile and ask if you could call Okkotsu for him and to be honest, you do it because it’s funny to hear Okkotsu calling you for help.
Mechamaru is someone who will talk to you here and there and sometimes (when he is comfortable) will tell you about his feelings and how he wants to be with everyone - leading you to open up to them about how you wished to be stronger causing him to feel more at ease with you.
He doesn’t admit it, but really loves talking to you here and there since you treat him like the person he is rather than the robot he is confined to use to communicate to people - you are someone that he definitely once met when he is able to physically.
Now Kamo was a difficult one to break into because of his position within the Jujutsu world and how much of a difference there is between you and him.
You remind him of his mother and he will try to keep some distance so he doesn’t get too attached but he will make the means to communicate with you.
When you tell him that it’s okay to talk to you when you are ready, he will take some time to think about those words and take his time to reach out to you - so when he sees his classmates talking to you on the whim like you are their parents, he is encouraged to do the same thing.
Kamo does rant to you a lot about how he wants to find his mother and he does thank you for being the support that you are as his ‘substitute’ you could say - he isn’t good with words.
You treat the Kyoto side the same as how you treat the Tokyo side because all of them have a different past that they trust you with even if you are a civilian and Gojo can see the effect you have on the students.
Gojo is really grateful for how you are able to cope with the pressures around you and really admires you for fighting them - something the Kyoto students can see as well.
Gojo loves you for giving the students something they don’t have when they enrol at Jujutsu Tech and how patient you are for them to open up to you.
I don’t think the Kyoto students will call you ‘mom’ but over time, it will slip up and then the Tyoko side will sense that - little jealousy fight here and there...be honoured.
Gojo will tease him about and say how adorable it is, while they are giving him the irritated look but he doesn’t tell them to call him ‘dad’ because he knows Utahime will make him run laps around the school.
Overall, you are a mother figure to both sides of the school and somewhat their support system when they need comfort and care the most - you are someone they can rely on and someone that tells them why they are a sorcerer (to protect people like you).

Sandworm Robot by Elliot Hawkes et al (2021), UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) and Georgia Tech. Ever wondered how a sandworm could burrow beneath the dunes of Arrakis? Subterranean navigation is extremely hard because of the high frictional forces involved. Octopusus are able to burrow into the sea bed using jets of water to liquify the sand. This burrowing robot performs the same trick, using compressed air to fluidize the sandy soil ahead of it. Furthermore, the robot eliminates friction along its body length by "moving without moving", growing only from its tip using a process of toroidal inversion developed for Stanford's growth-driven soft robots. Being more buoyant than the surrounding soil the robot tends to surface, so it is equipped with an attitude flap that helps it to maintain its depth.

Doordash privacywashes its war on workers
Tumblr media
Dashers aren’t stupid. They know that the difference between a profitable Doordash delivery and one where they earn less than they spend on gas is the size of the tip they get at the end of the job.
Of course, Doordash knows this too. The company — a corporate predator with a history of wage theft and worker misclassification — knows that its only hope of sustainability is to make real, profitable businesses like restaurants dependent on it.
If Doordash can impose a toll-booth between businesses and customers, it can siphon off the restaurants’ profits (and if it kills the restaurants in the process, it can replace them with ghost kitchens — fake restaurants in shipping containers).
https://pluralistic.net/2020/05/18/code-is-speech/#schadenpizza
To get there, it needs to convince consumers — that’s us — to reach for Doordash first whenever we want something delivered.
To get there, it needs to be really cheap — money-losingly cheap — offering bargains that we’d be idiots to pass up.
There’s two ways that Doordash can be cheaper than everyone else. The first is to subsidize each sale, using its investors’ cash to make up the shortfall. These investors buy into Doordash because they know that the money-losing period is a prelude to a profitable monopoly.
The second way Doordash keeps prices low is by violating labor law, misclassifying its workers as “independent contractors” so that it can pay sub-minimum wages and skip out on obligations like health care and pensions.
This labor exploitation is at the heart of every app-based gig business, and as you might expect, companies that are willing to cheat their workers in one way are willing to cheat them in other ways, too. Doordash is no exception.
Remember, Doordash pays its workers so little that they often lose money on deliveries, unless we opt for a tip that’s large enough to make the difference. Doordash knows this, but it doesn’t want its customers to know it.
If Doordash customers understood that the true price of the delivery included a tip that doubled or tripled the delivery fee, no one would use the service and it would collapse before it could rig the market to make real businesses dependent on it.
This presents a dilemma for Doordash. If workers are allowed to choose to skip unprofitable deliveries (as any “independent contractor” would) then its customers will quit the service and it will not attain a monopoly and its investors will lose everything.
To get workers to “agree” to unprofitable deliveries, Doordash had to figure out how to coerce or trick them. For a time, it simply bait-and-switched workers, paying a premium for drivers when they started, then reducing their wages in the hopes they wouldn’t notice.
But Dashers aren’t stupid. They organized the #declinenow movement, in which all the drivers in a region would decline any unprofitable delivery, knowing that the app would steadily increase the delivery fee they’d earn when this happened.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/04/07/cruelty-by-design/#declinenow
But Doordash had another tactic — it turned its app into a rigged casino game.
Customers who place an order with Doordash specify the tip before the delivery, so Doordash always knows what the total tip amount will be.
But Doordash hid that information from drivers. It would only show them part of the tip (as in, “You will earn at least $3 in tips on this run, but the true total may be much higher”). This turned deliveries into a slot machine where the house controlled every spin.
Here’s the thing. Doordash calls itself a tech company, but it’s not — it’s just a piecework sweatshop draped in the trappings of tech to dazzle investors and regulators.
And because it’s not a tech company, it was really bad at rigging the odds on its slot-machines.
It turned out that the dispatch messages that Doordash sent to drivers had the full amount of the tip in them. Doordash just programmed the driver app not to display this information.
But the app runs on the drivers’ phones. If your phone knows something, you can learn it.
So Dashers started installing Para, an app that simply sniffed the full tip amount from dispatch messages and displayed it, letting drivers choose between unprofitable and profitable runs.
https://entrecourier.com/delivery/delivery-strategies/delivery-tools/will-para-tip-transparency-make-more-money-or-get-you-deactivated/
So Doordash changed its data-model so that Para stopped working. Rather than admit that it did this so that it could coerce workers into losing money on the job, it insisted that it was trying to protect customer privacy.
https://www.npr.org/2021/07/31/1023265561/why-doordash-drivers-are-on-strike
Doordash falsely claimed that Para was “scraping” customer data (not that there’s anything wrong with scraping per se), and bruited about a lot of FUD, hinting that Para could steal drivers’ banking details and SSNs.
As I write in my latest article for EFF’s Deeplinks blog, Doordash didn’t invent this kind of privacywashing, which is when a company blames its own misdeeds on incoherent privacy concerns.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/08/tech-rights-are-workers-rights-doordash-edition
Everyone loves getting in on privacywashing! Think of Facebook’s idiotic lie that it shut down independent researchers who were exposing paid disinformation on the platform because they were putting user privacy at risk.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/08/05/comprehensive-sex-ed/#quis-custodiet-ipsos-zuck
It’s obvious that Facebook’s corporate management cannot be trusted to make good privacy decisions on our behalf. Neither can Doordash management, who leak our info on the reg:
https://help.doordash.com/dashers/s/doordash-data-incident
Corporations seize on any pretense to block interoperability, because they know that if third parties can plug into their tech, it makes it harder to sustain exploitative practices that harm users, workers and suppliers.
But when they make privacy noises, they never go to the obvious conclusion, namely, that our privacy should be safeguarded by democratically accountable laws, not corporate fiat:
