Part 6 | Masterlist | Part 8
Jeongin looked over anxiously at Felix who was deep in thought, eyes narrowed dangerously.
Even though Mingi did not straight up call them out for their bullshit, he could tell the tall male was not at all convinced by their pre-planned and well-practised script of lies. The youngest of Stray Kids feared he may have played a part in that due to his less-than-slick acting caused by the nerves he's been struggling to calm at the mere thought of messing up his very first mission and potentially upsetting Minho.
Minho, the right-hand man of their team leader, was an incredibly scary man.
Jeongin learned that when he was first recruited by the leader himself. Bang Chan stumbled upon him when he was out scouting for new targets one day, catching sight of the young boy skilfully fighting off a few zombies all by himself at once.
The leader believed those skills could come in handy for the team but Minho only raised a brow in doubt the moment his eyes landed on the scrawny kid. The poor boy went through more than enough just to finally earn the second eldest member's approval.
Unlike Chan, Minho did not possess a single shred of regard for camaraderie or any of that brotherhood nonsense that the leader, in contrast, loved to preach about. He only cared about whether or not an individual can be beneficial or how useful they can be to him or his team. He was only loyal to the leader due to their shared beliefs and respected Chan greatly for his unrelenting attitude that led their team to such a level of success and notoriety.
Because of that, the right-hand man can be extremely heartless even when it comes to his own teammates. Let's put it this way, the moment you prove yourself useless to the team or worse, if you dared to bring them down with you, Minho will be more than happy to get rid of you in the most satisfying way possible.
Jeongin was certain that not even Chan would probably be able to interfere once Minho sets his mind to something. That was probably how Woojin, a former member, got ousted anyway.
And that was exactly why Jeongin was this close to wetting his pants at the prospect of pissing said member off for not smoothly completing this operation.
He felt immense guilt for having to do this to you and your friends who were so kind and selfless. Truth be told, a part of him was disgusted with himself for being a part of Stray Kids when he witnessed poor Seonghwa nearly dying trying to fight off their enhanced zombie but he had to remind himself that in this world, it was every man for themselves.
The reminder didn't serve very well when he saw how hysterical you were over Seonghwa, he felt a pang in his heart as he yearned to be on the receiving end of the love that you so evidently had for the injured male. As much as Chan and some of the other teammates had treated him fairly well, that still wasn't love or genuine care. Not the kind you and your friends shared at least.
He would be lying to himself if he said he hasn't been walking on eggshells every single day ever since joining the team. After all, he only joined them in order to survive in the beginning.
He knew about Stray Kids and their reputation but being on the streets alone for so long does things to your mind and desperation makes people do even the craziest things. He had thought he only needed safety and a small sense of belonging back then but it was now clear to him that it was affection he craved most.
Jeongin had a hard time controlling his expressions and keeping his act together when Mingi 'interrogated' the both of them with his endless indirectly accusing questions before he rushed into the back room when Seonghwa's voice was heard talking from inside.
The remorse he felt for doing this to you as well as the fear of what Minho would do to him weighed him down in a neverending pit of hopelessness.
"Shit, the bastard's catching on, I'm sure of it. Hopefully, we can stall just long enough before the guys launch the ambush. Play dumb no matter what happens, don't you dare let anything slip in front of the woman. She's obviously soft for you so make good use of that." Felix pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance, no longer bothering to hide his irritation the moment Mingi disappeared from sight.
They straightened up when you emerged from the room, seemingly flustered with a mildly dishevelled appearance. You looked like you had a lot on your mind, Jeongin noted to himself.
Felix smirked at the opportunity, "This is it, she's vulnerable. Even god is on our side. Do your thing, Yang Jeongin." The younger felt a harsh nudge on his side and sighed heavily.
He stumbled shyly in your direction to meet you halfway as you were trudging slowly towards them, "H-hi, noona. Are you okay? Is hyung-nim okay? W-we're really sorry for all the trouble we caused." Despite the sneaky grin of approval Felix tried to hide, Jeongin truly meant what he said to you.
Your heart melted and you couldn't fight off the pout forming on your lips at the cutie patootie and his teary eyes glimmering pitifully at you, "Hey, hey, come here," You cooed, wrapping your arms around his shoulders and running a hand through his fluffy hair, "I'm okay, so is Seonghwa. Don't you worry about a single thing, everything is going to be alright. We'll do our best to protect you, I promise."
Jeongin felt his heart twist at your tender touch and the sincerity in your tone, he wanted to reveal the truth to you so badly at that very moment.
No, it's you who needs protection. Please don't be so good to me, noona. I don't deserve your kindness.
The younger's eyes fluttered shut as he basked in the warmth of your embrace, he wished to stay there forever. He was torn between wanting you to find out that Stray Kids was after you so that you could save yourself and wanting to complete his task quickly to avoid Minho's wrath which could very likely result in him dying a painful death.
He reluctantly parted from your hold when you eventually pulled away to grasp his hand instead, leading him towards Felix to sit him down beside his teammate once again.
You settled in front of them before ruffling Felix's hair adoringly as well and, to Jeongin's absolute surprise, the elder boy failed to hide his fondness over the action.
A brief but visible twinkle flashed past Felix's orbs before he blinked rapidly and looked away, he'd die before admitting it out loud to anyone but you reminded him of his elder sister who was no longer around. Those thoughts made him weak and the last thing he needed was that, weakness.
God please, not now… I don't want to think about her ever again.
"So, tell me your story. What happened to the both of you? How did you two end up out here all alone?"
After Felix collected himself from the unexpected feeling that he kept buried for so long suddenly resurfacing for a moment there, he lets out a breath of air in relief at your question. It meant that Mingi had yet to fill you in on any of his suspicions, so you were free for them to manipulate as they pleased.
Throwing a side glance at the youngest as if daring him to tell you the truth, Felix bit his lip in satisfaction when Jeongin gulps fearfully.
Sighing dramatically, Felix repeats the fabricated sob story that Mingi wasn't gullible enough to buy as he immediately caught on to where certain parts did not add up, which he further pressed on and observed as the boys fumbled around to cover up with more lies.
"Perfect, she believes every single word we uttered. Now, we just need to hold on until Chan hyung and the guys attack in a few hours." Jeongin had no choice but to nod along in defeat, it was their standard way of doing this.
They'd send one or two members to play the victim and lure the targets out while the super zombies do their job in hopefully taking a few targets out, if not all.
If there were still targets left, they'd wait until the targets take them in and settle down. Once the targets let their guards down, that's when the whole team strikes. All the supplies you now have will later end up in Stray Kids' inventory and judging by the size of the convenience store, this will be enough to last them quite a bit.
You kept watch alone by the entrance as Felix and Jeongin rested in their little corner.
Mingi accompanied Seonghwa in the back of the store, the last you saw them was when you went to grab some blankets for the two new boys. Your friends seemed to be engaged in a deep discussion of some sort, Seonghwa throwing you a quick glance while you smiled briefly at him, one which he thankfully returned as if to reassure you that everything was fine the way he always does.
His endearing action served its purpose well because the last thing you wanted or needed now was for there to be any awkward tension between you both.
Now that things have calmed down again, your thoughts finally drifted back to Hongjoong. You wondered how things were on his side, you hoped he was alright and that he's managed to find the guys. This wasn't the longest you've been without him but it sure was the first time you've been away from him this long without any form of contact.
As much as you know that all your constant worrying will not change anything, you still couldn't shrug off the feeling like something may have happened.
The thought of your poor friends out there, it always brought you so much anxiety. Like your boyfriend, you were equally as concerned for Wooyoung and San, you would have been for Mingi too if he wasn't already here with you. You wished they could all be here with you right now, just like old times.
For some reason, your heart wrenched uncomfortably because that simple wish felt so unreachable and almost impossible to come true.
I miss you all, please be safe.
Meanwhile, Mingi was unloading all of the information he believes he's gathered from his little investigation on the two kids to Seonghwa. This was all, of course, after he profusely apologised for nearly costing the elder his life.
"Are you certain that your intuitions are accurate, Mingi-yah? If so, it'll be hard to break the news to your noona. You know how soft-hearted she is," The younger of the two nodded, "I know, which is why I didn't tell her anything yet. But hyung, I'm sure of it. They're definitely up to something, I know it."
Seonghwa knows that Mingi was usually playful and can be a tad bit unreliable to be entrusted with important tasks but he's also aware that his friend has a humourless side to him that shouldn't be messed with when he puts his mind to it. He could see how serious Mingi was about this and knew he wasn't joking, especially after how much he felt he messed up for putting Seonghwa in this situation.
"Alright well, if that's the case, we probably shouldn't be leaving your noona alone with them. Let's go." With Mingi's help, the two left the back room to check on you.
Seonghwa softened immediately when he spotted you keeping watch by the entrance, he could almost tell what you were thinking about judging by the small crease between your brows.
His eyes then shifted to land on the two newcomers to see them huddled in a corner, nibbling on some food you must have provided them with. He bit his lip in frustration because they looked totally harmless on the outside but if what Mingi deduced was right, those two could be up to no good.
In fact, they were probably the reason he was even injured at all. He did find that one particular zombie oddly strong, unlike any other he's killed before and Seonghwa has taken out plenty so that says a lot.
Things definitely did seem rather fishy and what gave that away even more was the look Felix had on his face, Seonghwa didn't miss the way he constantly seemed like he was waiting for something to happen or for someone to show up. In Mingi's presence, the change in Felix's composure was fairly apparent as he immediately tensed and put on a smile that felt a little too fake to be sincere.
Oh yeah, something's definitely up.
Seonghwa and Mingi shared a knowing look before they approached the two.
Jeongin shot up from his seat at the sight of his injured victim saviour before bowing deeply, "Hyung-nim! Thank you for saving us, it's because of us that you're hurt!" Seonghwa shook his head, "Don't mention it, I'm sure you would have done the same thing for us if we were the ones out there, right?"
Jeongin's eyes rounded slightly at that, it was a test.
The sound of them talking caught your attention, breaking you out of your train of thought as you turned to find your friends here now.
"Hwa, are you sure you're okay to be standing? You should be getting more rest," You cut in before Felix or Jeongin could answer him. Seonghwa put a hand up to let you know he was fine while Mingi came up to you and gently grabbed ahold of your wrist, "Noona, we need to talk. Come with me."
You blinked in puzzlement, not sure what he could possibly want to talk to you about, "Umm sure?" Seonghwa's observant eyes remained glued to Felix as he visibly panicked, as if afraid that Mingi would reveal something you weren't supposed to know about. With wide eyes, Felix opened his mouth to call for you, "Wait noona, I-"
His words were cut off by the sound of the main entrance door being tugged from outside, all your heads snapping that way in an instant. It gave you déjà vu, reminding you of the time when Mingi appeared.
Seonghwa and Mingi's eyes quickly darted towards the new boys to gauge their reactions, Jeongin didn't look like he was doing too good but it was the Cheshire-like grin on Felix's face that made their stomachs drop.
Mingi was right, whoever Felix was waiting for has finally arrived.
You watched in bewilderment when Felix sprinted over excitedly to unlock the door before Mingi could stop him.
Seonghwa and Mingi cursed to themselves when realising they weren't fast enough to act upon their plan, both moving to grasp their weapons while you stepped closer to Seonghwa in concern. You furrowed your brows in confusion when he pushed you behind him protectively because it looked like everyone here knew what was going on except you.
Did I miss something? What the hell is going on?
Felix lets out a loud gasp and steps back in shock before he narrows his eyes furiously at whoever he was looking at, "You." His tone sounded accusing and you wondered who in the world it was that he saw.
"Yes, it's me. Surprised to see me, Felix?" The person on the other side responded smugly and you felt a lump forming in your throat at what you heard.
Wait a minute, I know that voice.
The mystery man emerged and your friends immediately dropped their weapons at the unexpected visitor.
It was Jongho.
The youngest of Hongjoong's group ended up escaping by himself after the zombie attack that separated them.
Jongho did his best to fight through the throngs of zombies coming his way and by the time he grew too exhausted, he's lost sight of all his friends. Deciding he'd just have to go look for them later on, he gave up lingering around the area and went off to find someplace safe to settle for the time being.
While he was busy scouting out an empty shop lot that used to be a hair salon, there was a loud yelp sounding through a nearby alley, catching his attention.
It sounded like someone was struggling while trying to keep their voice down at the same time. Out of curiosity, he tightened his grasp around the machete in his hand as he cautiously approached the source of the noise.
What Jongho witnessed put him in a huge dilemma, he was looking at a guy around his age fighting off a strangely strong zombie.
Firstly, he was just amazed by the sheer strength that this particular zombie had to be pinning the poor dude down like that. Unless the guy was insanely exhausted, they weren't usually that hard to fight off. Maybe Jongho was just exceptionally strong but he was sure that even Wooyoung could have handled this easily.
Logically speaking, it was only one zombie and their bodies are literally decaying so how strong can they really be.
That was exactly why he didn't need to be a genius to figure out that this was no ordinary zombie. It has clearly gone through some form of enhancement or modification, unless there was already a new mutation that he wasn't aware of yet, but he doubted that was the case.
The dilemma comes in here; his usual first instinct would have been to lend a helping hand as soon as he finds someone in this situation. You see, the only thing stopping Jongho from going to this person's aid was the fancy 'SKZ' tattoo on his arm, exposed from his short-sleeved shirt riding down while he wrestled against the undead.
How curious, a Stray Kids member and an abnormally strong zombie?
Jongho contemplated to himself for a good few seconds.
Nah, I shouldn't get myself involved. My only mission now is to get back to hyungs and noona ASAP.
Just as he turned to leave, the guy finally spots Jongho and immediately starts calling for him, "Hey! You there! Help me!"
Jongho rolled his eyes, stopping in his tracks to face the stranger who was this close to his death, "And why the hell should I? Because I know you wouldn't hesitate to leave whoever you find in this situation to die. Besides, I have no doubt that this one right here is a product of your own sick experiment anyway."
The guy's eyes widened slightly, "H-how… do you know?" Jongho watched in amusement as the gang member gritted his teeth tiredly.
"You're Stray Kids, I don't think anyone would be too surprised by any of this. Seems to me like a plan backfired on you, hope you've learned your lesson," The guy barely had any more strength left in him as he eyed Jongho pleadingly, "I have places to be so good luck, buddy. Just keep in mind this was how all your victims felt."
The member of Stray Kids proceeded to cry out miserably, messy apologies spilling out of his mouth in desperation.
Sighing in exasperation, Jongho sometimes hated himself for being a decent human being with a heart. Because the next thing he knew, he swung his machete across the zombie's neck in one clean slice and took it out in an instant.
Blood splattered all over the place, mainly drenching the now worn-out guy who was pushing the body off of him.
Slapping a palm over his forehead, Jongho was not sure if he should be feeling relieved or immense regret for saving the life of someone who must have contributed to the misery and deaths of many.
Jongho continued to hate himself for taking in the member of the gang that Hongjoong has warned them all countless times to steer clear of. He later learned that the gang member's name was Jisung after the two settled down in the hair salon that Jongho confirmed was safe to stay in for the night.
Jisung, out of genuine guilt and gratitude, hesitated before he eventually revealed to Jongho the truth about the super zombies that their gang uses for their operations and how this specific one spiralled out of control when he was trying to put it at its designated spot where it was supposed to serve its purpose.
He was lying if he said he wasn't at all affected by the near-death experience in the hands of their own product. It definitely made him think differently, especially after the lecture he received from Jongho about having the audacity to expect mercy from others when they themselves would not spare any of it.
Sure, the world could be cruel but it didn't necessarily mean it was right for their gang to do this to innocent people who meant no harm, right?
Jisung recalled joining the gang mainly to survive, all the power and wealth it brought about was only a bonus since he used to be a bit of a loser back when the world was not zombie-infested. That was why being part of this gang made him feel like he finally achieved something great in life.
Now that he thinks about it, he didn't have much thought after joining Stray Kids. He just did whatever he was tasked to do without question, only wanting to care for himself because lord knows how tiring it is to have to care for others too.
Let's just say that this incident alongside Jongho's words of wisdom may or may not have slightly changed his perspective on life and humanity.
It didn't take long before the boss man eventually showed up to retrieve Jisung after he failed to accomplish his task.
Bang Chan was beyond pissed that the operation fell through because of this but later thought that all was not lost when he discovered Jongho and his outstanding survival skills. Not to mention, he was also remarkably intelligent, strong and fearless.
Those were all qualities that the leader of Stray Kids actively sought to find in a member.
But what sets Jongho apart from the rest was his ability to remain calm even in the most dire situation. He understands that panicking and worrying cannot change anything but rather, it usually made things worse. And that, everyone, is an individual we all want to be with in a zombie apocalypse.
Chan, therefore, did not have to think twice before attempting to recruit Jongho. He was confident that Jongho would accept in a heartbeat, the same way all his current members had before.
After all, lone survivors in this world would have nothing else to care for but their own survival and joining Stray Kids would not only guarantee that but also provide so much more. Of course, you get all that in exchange for your service but none of his members have any complaints about that as of now so he's convinced they're doing well.
Except there was a huge problem, Jongho was adamant about saying no to his very tempting offer.
But Chan can't have that, no one has ever turned him down and that made him even more determined to convince this particular survivor to be on his team.
He returned to discuss with Minho, who only agreed to raise the offer when he found out how valuable of an addition Jongho would make to the team, the pair came up with all sorts of ideas to recruit Jongho.
After their second or third attempt at it, Jongho tiredly explains that he already belonged to another group that was broken apart from an attack and just wanted to locate his friends. On top of that, he bravely added that he had zero interest in joining the gang even if he really was on his own because he was well aware of what they do and refuses to take part in any of that.
If Jongho thought that would make Chan quit, he couldn't have been any more wrong because the leader later returned only to make an even better offer that was nearly impossible to reject.
"Join Stray Kids and I assure you that we will provide not only you but also your group mates, which we will help you find, with unlimited supplies as well as a safe place to stay for good, all in exchange only for your skills. How does that sound?"
Jongho would easily give any of this up if it meant he had to be away from his group but what Chan was offering included not only his own but also the safety of all his friends.
The fact that your group has yet to find a potential sanctuary where you could all reside long term along with limited resources that could only last so long, it made Chan's offer a little too hard to pass up. Besides, he knew how hard things have been for Hongjoong who was constantly trying to keep everyone safe, perhaps this time he could be the one to protect you all instead.
At long last, he relented and accepted the offer but not without going as far as to threaten Chan to keep his side of the deal. His tenacity made the leader and his right-hand man even more certain that he was exactly what they needed.
Jongho did feel like he slapped himself in the face there for giving in after all that righteous talk about never joining Stray Kids. With this decision, he definitely went against his moral compass but then reminded himself that in a zombie-infested world, it was inevitably all about the survival of the fittest.
He focused only on getting all his group members back and to safety for now, he decides that he'll worry about morals and all that later on when he finds Hongjoong. He trusts their captain to steer them in the right direction eventually, as always.
During the lengthy process of recruiting Jongho, certain members have already begun to dislike him due to his problematic attitude. Because how dare he say no to being a part of this, he should be so honoured to be personally recruited by Chan and Minho. This included members such as Changbin, Hyunjin and Felix, who were afraid of having their positions threatened especially after witnessing the lengths that the group leader and his right-hand man would go just to recruit him.
It irked them to no end that their boss was willing to even go as far as to take on more burden your group just to have him on the team. They couldn't understand what made him so great, what did he have that they didn't?
In the midst of all this, Felix and Jeongin were sent out on their most recent mission and were not around when Jongho accepted and therefore, had absolutely no idea that he was now a part of their gang.
When Jongho finds out that you, Seonghwa and Mingi were their latest targets, he immediately told the leader to abort the mission, clarifying that you three were part of his group. The leader agreed, instantly calling off the ambush they initially planned to launch.
As requested, Chan and Minho let him reunite with his friends and fill you in first to prevent the situation from escalating as Felix and Jeongin would have assumed the operation was a go if the eldest members were to appear instead.
That was how Jongho found himself back in your arms, he squeezed you back tightly and smiled reassuringly at Seonghwa and Mingi.
"It's okay, noona. I'm here now, I'll protect you all from now onwards."
Sorry that this took a while to come out. I won't lie but I struggled a bit with this part, I personally am not too pleased with it. Hope it didn't suck too much and as always, thank you for reading!

20 Questions for Fic Writers!
Let’s get this baby started! Thanks for the inspo @gracelesslady23!
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
60 (blame my HP and AoUAD obsession lmao).
2. What is your total AO3 word count?
471,017. That’s…insane.
3. What fandoms do you write for?
At the moment, mostly for All of Us Are Dead. But of course, I can’t forget the whopping majority of HP fics I have! They really defined the beginning of my fanfic-writing journey.
4. Top 5 fics by kudos?
The Filthy Half-Blood Spy (777)
A Meaningful Sacrifice (490)
Albus Potter and the Journey Through Time (481)
The Bravest Man I Ever Knew (277)
My Old Friend, Minerva (267)
As you can see, I really love HP. The second one is AoUAD.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Of course I do! I appreciate everyone who takes the time to leave them.
6. What’s the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Oh, I’ll take a quiet life for sure. It’s a canon divergence of A Meaningful Sacrifice, and hoooo boy, that’s probably the single most saddest thing I have ever written in my life. (Never again, Glow. Never again.)
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Pretty much all of them have happy endings, so if I were to pick a few, then they would probably be The Bravest Man I Ever Knew, A Miracle in the Midst of September, and Come Back to Me.
The second fic is Downton Abbey while the third is AoUAD.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not really, but when I was writing A Meaningful Sacrifice, I got a lot of spam.
9. Do you write smut?
Not explicitly, no. There was one fic I posted (that I since deleted) which features non-graphic smut between Snape and Lupin. (I deleted it because it was too embarrassing to keep on my profile.)
10. Do you write crossovers?
I have one, Finding My Way Back to You (Again)! It’s a crossover where Oh Joonyeong of AoUAD is a doctor in the 20th Century Girl universe who helps Poong Woonho overcome amnesia sustained in a plane crash.
Other than that, I prefer writing AUs where I put characters from one show into another show’s universe. My Duty After School AU with AoUAD characters, Reluctant Duty, is a great example of this.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Thankfully, I have not.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yup! Albus Potter and the Journey Through Time in Portuguese on Wattpad (which is unfinished, unfortunately).
13. Have you ever co-written a fic?
I have! Of Apologies and Food Fights: A Glimpse Into the Afterlife was an awesome collab with the amazing @glitterfairy-21225!
14. What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Oh Joonyeong/Jang Woojin, for sure. Since February 2022, these boys have been living in my head rent-free. Honorable mentions include Lee Cheongsan/Nam Onjo, Yang Daesu/Seo Hyoryung, and Lee Junho/Woo Youngwoo. The first four ships are from AoUAD, and the fifth is from Extraordinary Attorney Woo.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you will?
Probably Albus Potter and the Journey Through Time, even though it won’t take much longer to finish it. Every time I go back to it, I immediately feel discouraged from writing it because it suddenly seems like too big of an undertaking. However, I will never stop trying!
16. What are your writing strengths?
Dialogue, descriptions, and AU ideas (God knows how many are floating around in my head right now 😭).
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
Having too many ideas. I swear, if I could just commit to finishing one project, then I would have way more completed fics.
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language?
It would be all fine and dandy if it uses the Roman alphabet (think French, Spanish, German), but if it was a language like Korean or Chinese, then I’d rather write the transliteration since my writing would be targeted towards English readers/speakers. But obviously, I’d try my best to write other cultures authentically.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Though they’re all deleted, I first wrote for Detroit: Become Human. That was what got me into fanfic in the first place because I reasoned that, since the game had 99+ endings, fanfiction was fair game (I really hated fanfic at the time).
20. Favorite fic you’ve ever written?
A Meaningful Sacrifice, hands down. That was probably my single best piece of writing in terms of characterization, setting, worldbuilding, and cohesiveness with the original show. Additionally, I ended up creating two very important OCs which had significant influence in the main character’s life.
Writing that fic inspired a whole lore which is present in my other AoUAD fics like Washed Down the Drain, Us, Withering Under the Sun, and Reluctant Duty. I also gained an awesome friend from it in @glitterfairy-21225, so yeah. One of my best fanfic-writing experiences to date.
On that final note, here’s your tag to do this, @glitterfairy-21225! <3
