Director: Miao Jinguang Starring: Yu Shang / Zhao Pengtao / Chen Qianduo / Lu Mingming / Song Binwei / Zhu Liqun / Li Yanbing / Mei Han / Zhang Lei Genre: Fantasy Country/Region of Production: Mainland China Language: Mandarin Chinese Date: 2016-09-20 (Mainland China) Duration: 76 minutes Also known as: Journey to the West: The Kingdom of the Western Liang Women / 西游之西梁女国 Type: Retelling
Summary:
The four master and disciples of Tang Monk traveled westward but after accidentally drinking water from the Zimu River, they encountered the Immortal Ruyi. After resolving the disaster of pregnancy and childbirth, they entered the mysterious Xiliang Women's Kingdom. In exchange for the customs clearance document, the Queen of the Xiliang Women's Kingdom fell in love with Tang Seng at first sight, and immediately arranged for a national advisor to arrange a matchmaking marriage, and was willing to use the wealth of the country to marry Tang Seng as his husband. Tang Monk rejected the kindness of the Imperial Master and repeatedly declined the Queen's intentions when visiting the Royal Garden with the Queen. He discussed countermeasures with Sun Wukong in order to leave Women's Kingdom as soon as possible.
When Sun Wukong received the customs clearance document, he used immobilization spells to immobilize the Queen and others, and the four masters and disciples quickly fled from the Xiliang Women's Kingdom. Fleeing to the wilderness, Tang Seng couldn't bear it. When he was melancholy, he saw the Queen chasing him alone. The Queen kindly made an appointment to go to the other courtyard for a gathering. Tang Seng was moved and followed her there. Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, and Sha Wujing arrived just in time. When the Queen saw Tang Seng's apprentice chasing after her, she transformed into her true form. She turned out to be a Scorpion Spirit, and then abducted Tang Seng. Sun Wukong and others quickly chased after him. The scorpion spirit forced Tang Monk to get married. At the critical moment, Sun Wukong arrived, and together with Sha Zeng and Bajie, they subdued the scorpion spirit and rushed to the west.

Monkey King Reborn
Genre: Romantic
Pronouns: Gender-Neutral
TW/CW: None
Character(s): Sun Wukong-Monkey King
Just some headcanons that I wrote way last year that I never got around to posting. Oops-
Tumblr media
So-👀 My little dumb brain is like-what if, in the movie, since Sandy has his knowledge, Wukong is the muscle and speed and Tripitaka is the center of the group-Why not have a healer/protector?
You, a seemingly normal child, who was bullied for their weight and told that you'd never make it anywhere, awaken your powers when helping a merchant passing by your village. They got hurt, and with your caring nature and panic at the moment, awakened the power within you. People in your village raved about you, sweeping all the bullying and harassment they did to you under the rug and begging for your help.
You agreed for a price. After all, in this cruel world, you only had yourself. Very quickly, people got greedy and even wanted to marry you off since your children had the chance to inherent your powers, which disgusted you. At one point, you just got up and left, never wanting to return. These people weren't savable, nor did you want to help them.
After leaving and wandering on your own, you meet the gang. Tang Sanzang, who had just started his journey and needed another human around, was happy to have you on board, ready to teach you what he knows. The bond you two build is one of siblings. He, the strict yet gullible brother, and you, the more realistic but still kind sibling.
Of course, you meet the others. Sandy, the cute and wholesome water demon. He'll tell you all about the books he has, from myths and stories to demon knowledge. It's adorable how invested he is, and he's happy that you listen. Nerdy friend + supportive bff. You also think it's cute when he's excited or shocked and a bubble leaves his mouth.
Pigsy, the perverted and cocky pig demon. Of course, he sees you and he's drooling. Trying to flirt but quickly getting rejected by you. Every once in a while, he pulls through, which you appreciate, but your relationship with him is aquantices at best.
And then, there's Wukong. He sees you and, like the other beings he's encountered, doesn't really notice you. I mean, you're different from all the women he's seen before his entrapment, being more curvy, and you've got a warm aura, but that's about it? He doesn't really get why you're traveling with them. You just seem...so defenseless? Weak? Way too kind to just be kind.
He's got his eye on you. Thinking that he's gonna catch you doing something bad and call you out. But as time goes by, he realizes that you're...just a nice person, much to his shock. You never ask for anything in return, and you're always happy to help them out.
Let's say that he takes an interest, say when you use your powers. Whether to protect him from an attack with your barriers or when you heal a bad wound of his. He hasn't seen many with your abilities, what with everyone usually just fighting it out. It's a bit interesting, but he still thinks you could learn some self defense.
Your kindness towards him is...strange. He's so used to everyone blowing him off, throwing insults and hate his way, cursing his birth. But you cheer for him when he kicks ass. Compliment him when he finds food and water. And when the others, really just Zhu Bajie, start throwing him under the bus, you're there to defend him. You do scold him, but definitely not as much as everyone else, and when you do, you always do so as calmly as you can and tell him that you're worried about him.
He does notice that, for as kind as you are, you are a bit...distrustful towards people, keeping them at a distance until proven to be an ally or a good being. If they know about your powers, you keep a greater distance from them. It baffles him because you're on good terms with everyone on the team.
When you tell him about your past, since he's a nosy motherfucker, he starts to understand WHY. People have taken advantage of your powers, your kindness and belief that not everyone will use you, but you've pretty much been proven wrong. So when you say that you're thankful to have met them, and that they're the closest thing you've ever had to friends, he's...touched. The fact that you consider him a friend and never try to hide it makes him feel...less alone in the world.
If he ever finds out about the bullying and the people who did it, especially because of your weight, he'll keep it in his mind for later. 'You're pretty wtf???''Well, sucks for them, they missed out on a hot s/o'. He thinks in his mind. He'll visit them and teach them a lesson. Will he ever tell you? Hell no. That's a secret for him and only him to know.
In battle, you two become an absolute unit. You heal, he takes care of the enemies and you defend each other. He really likes the synergy you've built, like you can read each other's movements and just...flow with one another. He knows that if anything, you'll have his back, like he'll have yours.
When he compliments you, you know you're getting closer. He doesn't compliment just anyone, and is only directed that those he REALLY cares about. So even if it doesn't sound super cheerful or cheesy, know that him complimenting you means he likes you. "Not bad. I've never seen something like that." "Thanks Wukong!" Cue blushing monkey.
He'll unknowingly get soft for you, sitting a bit closer, sharing some of his water or food, keeping a closer eye on you in case danger appeared. It isn't until one of the members, maybe Sha Wujing or Zhu Bajie point it out, that he actually starts to think about it. My man starts going through the stages of grief.
Denial is his strongest stage. Why!? He's Sun Wukong! The strongest demon to exist! He doesn't need love! Then he'll start getting angry at himself for getting "soft". He's a demon for heaven's sake! He doesn't FEEL! At one point, he'll start bargaining with himself about how maybe it's the QUALITIES you hold.
The depression be hitting hard when he finds out it's YOU he likes. Don't get him wrong! It's not that there's anything wrong with you, it's just-he's used to being alone. He's never loved anyone, especially like this! Love is seen as a weakness, and now that he WAS IN LOVE-He was worried. He was scared for you-Not that he'd ever admit it. It doesn't help that he's immortal and you're not. Eventually, he half-accepts it. He just needs to be 1000% sure.
When y'all arrive at the Temple and he finds out about the manfruit-Say goodbye to your human years, cause you're gonna eat it. No ifs, ands or buts. He'll feed it to you if he has to. Don't test him. He's not taking no for an answer. In his mind, he's accepted that he enjoys your company, mainly because you take his side and you're literally the light of his life. He still doesn't want to admit how soft he's gone for you. He's such a tsundere I swear to god-
BDJSBSJBSJSNSBSJ-
When Yuandi is released and you're traveling with Fruitie, he sees your bond with the Qi Energy as...kinda cute. Fruitie seems so comfortable around you and you let them talk away, asking questions every once in a while. And you save Wukong the trouble of getting pissed on.
Imagine when you're all fighting against the demons, Wukong is worried about you, looking to see if you're alright every second he can. He knows you're capable, but he's...he's scared to lose you. But it gets even worse when Yuandi-When this dude roles up and starts tossing y'all around-
Zhu Bajie and Sha Wujing are killed, and both you and Wukong are the only thing between him and Fruitie. You're doing everything you can to protect them, using all your energy to keep them safe. You don't want to lose anyone else-you can't-BUT THEN YOU'RE KILLED WITHOUT MERCY AND- 😢😭
Wukong, weak and close to passing out, takes your hand in his. Feeling the warmth leave it breaks his fuCKING HEART OML THIS MAN IS WEEPING FOR YOU- 💔 It isn't until you and the others are revived and next to him that he's truly okay, and without any hesitation, sweeps you into his arms and doesn't let go. You and the others are surprised by the open affection, but you return it none the less.
It isn't until you guys have said your goodbyes to Fruitie and arrived at a safe place to take a breather that he just confesses his feelings for you. It's randomly thrown out there, with the only indication of it happening being the small hue of red on his cheeks and refusal to look you in the eyes.
If you have self confidence issues and ask him if he's sure, he's looking at you, questioning if you heard what he just said. Of course he's sure! He spent all this time making sure, and now that he's accepted it, he's giving you his heart! Not just anyone can do that! It just proves how special you are! But after talking it out, you two eventually get together.
Gifts? Honey, good luck with that-He's so fucking clueless about it that it's kinda cute at times. He's a monkey. He's been surrounded by monkeys. Yeah, he's been around humans, but he's not asking them about human courting and gift giving. If he knew that he was gonna meet you, he would have asked a few questions, but that's about it.
The best he can do right now is flowers and small trinkets he finds along the way that he thinks you'll like. The fact that you enjoy them even though it's another simple flower or trinket, it makes his heart skip a beat. Zhu Bajie had the audacity to question why one day, but your sweet answer saved the pig demon from a beating. "It's BECAUSE they're from him. He's doing his best, and that's all I could ever ask for." Cue blush.
Hug this man! Give him pets and cuddles please this grumpy monkey needs it-😭 Hold his hand when he starts getting mad, it calms him down and he'll hold it back once he's cooled off. Hug him when he's done something good! Pet him when he's tired or bored, that'll get him purring and falling asleep in no time. Of course, this man is a tsundere, so he'll prefer it with just the two of you and without the teasing. You get it though, and always ask for consent, which he highly appreciates. So when it's just you two, he's all over you and adamantly refuses to let go.
If anyone even THINKS to flirt with you-Meet him out back, hands are up and he's ready to throw them for you. If anyone actually DOES, he'll give them the dirtiest glare. And people run away, never to be seen around you again. NOW-If a fool has the guts to actively flirt with you after that-oh boy 😔 They better have their funeral set up cause he's putting them in it.
But if anyone even dares to insult you and call you names. 👁👄👁 They have reached their expiration date on life and are now on their way to the Netherworld. They will not be spared and will not be forgiven, even if YOU forgive them. You deserve respect-after all, you're his queen, and as your king, it's his duty to protect you.

Tang Sanzang's Secret Library?
Thought I give some quick thoughts on these scenes enjoy:)
In Embrace Your Destiny episodes The Corrupted King and Time to Be Warriors is the only time we see this hidden library belonging to the great monk with many filled scrolls and books of hidden writings sadly this place is never really brought up again after the fall LBD.
I decided to study on it a little bit. Mainy on the art you see around and just some general observations.
Tumblr media
After they crashing down the winding stairs they find this small rotunda filled with writing and statues and art.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The statues are the first interesting thing you notice because they come up most in these scenes. The odd thing about them is the lack of Ao Lie.
The next thing is that the statues are placed unevenly Tripitaka is all the way in the back next to no one on his level and the other two Bajie and Wujing are next to each other level-wise. Then we have Monkey who isn't on the stairs at all and is instead his own podium front and center which is doubly odd this meant to be Tripitakas library after the journey of the west.
Why the lack of Ao Lie and center Wukong. Perhaps it is like many other motifs of their journey with Wukong at the top or center to symbolize him being the one front and center leading the group and the fact that Triptka is in the back because he himself doesn't need a statue of himself as not be vain but for other who visit.
But the lack of Ao Lie still gets me we see later when he gets his own painting. But there are two possibilities one Ao Lies statue did exist but crumbled and we can't see the remains or this is the biggest one as we see on Wukong's statue he is without his signature golden fillet what if these statues were molded a bit after the journey and the reason we don't have Ao Lie statue was that he died before this built This would mean Ao Lie died first then the others.
Tumblr media
Another thing about the image behind them is the one of the mountain range on the top of the steps it is most likely meant to be the ritual sight
Tumblr media
The other Art pieces might also tell the story of the Sahmiad Fire and the Rings
Tumblr media
Ao Lie seemed to get his own sections a small staircase to get a closer look at his image which might solidify my earlier theory that Ao Lie was the first it die and this is a moment of him. Or if these all tell a story then this would point to his involvement in the ring's formation.
On the right we get another image of the pilgrims and like the statue Wukong is front and center depicted as the one leading them though waves.
the left image is hard to depict but the seems to be small things with wings all aimed to the center of the frame.
Tumblr media
We also get over a lock-shaped door an image of the heavenly palace but if you look closer the seems to be the image of a bringing figure falling toward it from the upper middle of the image.
The image next to it are my reason for this theory of these telling a story.
Tumblr media
next to it is the image of the Bull King and look at the emphases on his nose ring one of the rings of Samiadi. Next to it are images of flames but in another scene we get a smaller part of that image
Tumblr media
You can see Bull King on the left but on the right, a continuation of the second image is someone in chains having something magically drained from them. The figures seem to have uplifted hair like red son.
This place is filled with info that could help them but the show never brings it up again. Also, the candles were already lit when they first arrived so either they are magic candles that always stay lit or someone was here before them and left recently.
Tumblr media
Just saying:)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------BTW I have a major question my guess is this is a continuity error by Ao Lie horse form changed
Tumblr media
In the image on the right we see Ao Lie horse form having a black main.
Tumblr media
we also see it on Wukong's now former mural of the Pilgrims that Ao Lie was depicted with a black short main BUT.
Tumblr media
Most likely this was a continuity error but I do like the white horse look more:)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------Then this cute thing is faded by time but on the main pillar at the base is a fading image of the pilgrims or at least three of them.
Tumblr media
I tried my best to recreate it with what I saw. Also, I think they also are meant to show Wukong because the golden wave going over them is most likely Wukong's cloud trail but he is hidden behind a d long purple tapestry. I encourage artists to take a closer look and see what I missed.
This image so far seems to be Wujing cheering out loud maybe at Wukong on his cloud then Tripitaka gives him a look but without the mouth, I can't tell and Bajie seems to be reaching for Tripitaka or just doing a pose.

in lmk, we are shown wukong as a strong, cheerful, smart (not always) character, but what he really is, if we talk about the original, namely jttw
ya askin whats he like in jt/tw?
hmm... lets see.
he is one of the strongest beings of the chinese folklore, he loves to smile and laugh rather than cry (he says so when Nezha accuses him of bein heartless cuz he laughed rather than grieved when they were losing against the Rhinocerous King). he is an incredibly skilled fighter- both in martial arts and thru magic/religious fate. he's charming in his own way, he's caring for those he loves (i'm holding on to my interpretation of him seeking immortality in the first place because of his love for life and his monkey family) to the point it might be sometimes honestly an issue (Tang Sanzang was... not good to him. Zhu Bajie maybe honestly even worse)
he's a simple but (always and incredibly) smart country bumpkin (compared to Heaven especially) that doesn't care about formalities and can come up with a sound plan in blink of an eye. he calls himself everyone's grandpa, cuz he's silly and loving like that. he cried over the eastern sea when he was cast away from the pilgrimage the first time and he went to mourn to Guanyin the second time he was sent away
he's a fool thats easy to rile up. he's a tad bit too self-centered, blinded by confidence in himself at times, especially so when he faced against the Buddha. he's the reason huaguo shan was burnt to the ground and that the monkeys there had to suffer for over 500 years. he still loves them so so very much
he takes no shit, ready to kill anybody who isn't important enough that stands in his way. he tries to keep his promises. he used to eat humans at some point. he isn't afraid to ask for help. he is no stranger to intimidation and bullying. he's a little oblivious to relationships- because of him Red Boy had been taken away by Guanyin to study under her as Sudhana (really, it was Red Boy's fault on like 75% though) and despite that, when he met Bull Demon King again afterwards, he thought they were still going to be on the same terms as literal centuries ago
it's hard, basically impossible, to really put him into a small characterization box because he is written to be very complex- he changes quite a bit over the course of the book, too, becoming better and better of a person. seeing as he is supposed to represent the human mind in jt/tw, a buddhistic allegory, he can be a little all over the place sometimes
LMK got him down pretty alright, i'd say!

Peachtea/TripSun angst idea. Nobody knew Wukong would disappear for 500 years so they're mourning until Xiaotian starts training with him. Tang composes himself to wait a little longer but Wukong just ignores all the signs. Until he gets into an argument with Tang and Tang ends up snapping "Why did you disappear for 500 years?!"
Okay so here’s the thing, I can only get behind the whole ‘The other Pilgrims ALL thought Wukong was dead and are PISSED at him now’ stuff, only, and I mean ONLY if Wukong either thought they all didn’t want to hear from him again anyway, or if he thought they were dead too.
....I mean my only contributions to all those ‘Reunion with Baije and Wujing’ posts were both ‘Wukong thought they were dead too’ so CLEARLY thats my read on the whole thing. I sincerely can’t see him just... NOT telling people he cared that much about that he was gonna bounce for that long to be alone on FFM, so if he knew they were alive he would have told them.
And then you know someone spotted that little shrine with the origami figures in the Special and I was there like:
Tumblr media
So like, lets do something we’ll both enjoy here then because all of those reunion fics are almost exclusively centered around the trio, and we oh so rarely see Sanzang (whether he is Tang or not) get involved.
So like first off, assuming LMK is on a sci fi alternate earth instead of being in the future, there’s still a solid nine hundred or so years between the end of the Pilgrimage and the supposed time Wukong disappeared for Monkie Kid timeline (JTTW is set in like the 600s or so if i remember correctly, might be wrong about the exacts tho) so lets assume those nine hundred years were uneventful.
So yeah, idk the hows, the hows don’t matter. What DOES matter is Wukong somehow loses contact with the others and is somehow convinced they were all killed, had his last stand against DBK and then went off travelling for a century to come to terms with his brothers and his precious, darling, beloved Master all perishing due to his inability to protect them.
and meanwhile for the others he was just... GONE. Like he’d vanished off the face of the earth, And the last the three of them ever saw of him was the staff rooted into the mountain that now kept the Bull King below. Just in case maybe the tree of them would periodically head off to Flower Fruit Mountain and check in with the monkeys that could still talk, but after about a century it was clear. If he WAS still alive, he wasn’t coming back. And the idea that he’d purposefully leave all of them behind just for the hope that he WAS still alive would do his memory a disservice.
So when Wukong returns to FFM wouldn’t it be great if he like, JUST missed that last visit? Like DAYS after Sanzang, Baije and Wujing had been there for the final time to hold an impromptu funeral for their dead friend on his homeland and finally accept that he was gone, Wukong returns to the mountain and builds his little shrine for his dead friends... the Monkeys all look at eachother awkwardly and shrug, assuming this will be settled soon enough, surely it’ll be solved before too long.
And then another 400 years of kingly depression naps and the others falling in and out of contact with eachother as they adapt to the ever changing world around them later, Xiaotian snatches the staff from the bull family.
And... Look... It’s been a ROUGH 500 years on Sanzang now called simply Tang. He’d only recently tracked down Baije-now-called-Pigsy in the past... what Ten years? and was only tangentially aware of what Wujing-now-called-Sandy was up to. And... Look... LOOK. It’s ridiculous that he’s still hung up over losing Wukong as much as he is. He’s Well FUCKING aware it’s ridiculous. He should know better, he quite LITERALLY reached immortality through enlightenment. He KNOWS he should know better.
So why-... Why can’t he say his real name without his gut still twisting into knots? He still tells the stories because telling them behind a wall of detachment, pretending he wasn’t there on the action for most of them helps in some small way, but why does he have to always call him ‘the Monkey King’? What a question, he knows why. He gave his heart away when he was still mortal, and so mortal his heart will forever stay. Dead and returned to the stone with the impulsive monkey he’d given it to.
And then It’s not dead. Because he’s not dead. and honestly at first it’s just shock, it’s just reeling with the sheer tidal wave of feelings he had to spend hours meditating just to sort through. The three of them meet up after Xiaotian and Xiaojiao have turned in for the night to discuss what the FUCK just happened, and all three of them come away with different conclusions.
Baije is furious and will refuse to seek out Wukong unless its to tell him off for letting the three of them belive him dead, Wujing is sad and would like to see Wukong again to simply ask why he’d decided to cut the three of them out of his life like that, but doesn’t want to do it alone. And he’s...conflicted.
He wants this to be a joyous discovery. he wants to be so relieved and euphoric at his monkey still being there, having ALWAYS been there, that he wouldn’t be able to stop smiling for days on end. But he can’t. It’s all so... messy inside and he’s going to need to keep his distance if he wants to be able to approach Wukong with a level head. This was why attachments such as these were foolish he should have known better all those years ago but it was centuries too late now, and this confliction is what he has to suffer through as the result... wanting to laugh and cry and scream all at once because Wukong is ALIVE, he’d spent SO long in mourning for him, and HOW DARE HE ignore them all and let them assume the worst?!
So he hides behind that Scholar Tang persona while he sorts through his emotions. And it works for the most part.
And then New Years happens.
And... Look, Wukong’s been THROUGH it in the last 500 years. He’s done everything he could to just... GET OVER the loss of his love His Master and His brothers. he went through all the damn stages of grief,
Spent that first decade in denial poking around everywhere he could to see if any of them-ANY of them were in hiding somewhere, spent another three decades wandering the world and starting fights with other cultures divine warriors (and that Aphrodite chick was DEFINITELY hitting on him the entire time, extolling about how rarely she got to use her ‘Aria form’ whatever that meant) to work through his rage without actually getting himself in trouble with his own heavenly court. Spent another twenty years or so looking through as many underworlds as he could find, no matter how many of them really wanted to test just HOW immortal he was (Answer: Too Immortal for any of them) to see if ANYONE had anything he could work with, and always coming up empty. eventually crossed the ocean to the other landmass because he was tired of looking at all of these places and seeing either memories or wasted time looking for bargaining chips, and spent a decade or so deciding he hated Mexico and went back to China. and then spent another thirty years just procrastinating returning home to his mountain.
When he returns to flower fruit mountain its as though he’d never left. His monkeys greet him with excitement but he’s standing on the shores of his home he hasn’t seen in a century and... feels nothing. Like his ability to feel anything for anything beyond the people he’s lost is gone. He makes a little shrine that spends most of its time on a shelf that's difficult to be able to look at full on without craning your neck weirdly and if any of his subjects notice that he takes a bit too much care in folding the little paper figure of the monk as he sets the four figures up along the edge of the little thing none of them judge him over it. He’s rarely got the energy for tears anymore, but when he does it’s usually when that little figure catches his eye.
By the time Xiaotian crashes into his life he’s... getting better. At least he thinks he is. having the loud excitable boy in his life is helping chase the shadows away a little bit (though when they return oh how they scream) and he hears some stories of his friends on training days and... geez sometimes he’ll tell this or that story and Wukong will be so THOUROUGHLY reminded of someone that it just... hurts.
And then New Years happens.
And he finally sees him again -- And he finally meets Xiaotian’s friends
And he still doesn’t know how to feel it’s all SO MUCH -- And they feel familiar so he gives them all a quick glance with golden eyes
And he can only do the one thing that feels safe right now -- And oh... that makes sense. How lucky they all found eachother again after reincarnating.
Sanzang hides behind the Tang persona and lies with an energy that could only be harvested from the sheer maelstrom of emotions fighting for dominance -- and Wukong leaves before he says something incriminating because now he knows and he can’t Un-know.
He should have known better but its centuries too late. And it doesn’t even matter that he doesn’t know how to feel about this whole thing he HAS to keep seeing him, he can NOT let him vanish again -- This was a mistake, this was a mistake, he cannot face them all and see lack of recognition, he cannot have his brothers treating him only as Xiaotian’s mentor he can NOT handle looking at him and seeing a stranger.
He needs to at least TALK to him -- He can’t stay away
Wukong doesn’t start out hanging out at the Noodle Shop on down time, that’d be too much too quick, especially since Baije-.. Since Pigsy is clearly still pretty steamed for the whole ‘letting Xiaotian into the world of magic and monsters’ stuff. But he’ll often shapeshift and keep an eye on things like that... No he is NOT eavesdropping on the reincarnations of those three out of the ridiculous desperate desire to feel close to them again. Because he’d rather just love him miss them from afar than be treated as a stranger.
But of course Tang notices when he does. Every time. And every time he wants to say something but his throat feels too tight. That first day he’d fallen on the persona because it was all he felt he COULD do but now the very idea that he’d have to pretend to be someone else just to be able to speak to his monkey not his not anymore Him was completely out of the question. Tang’s actually surprised with himself the first time he finds his voice.
The conversations come quickly, neither of them quite content to ignore the other now that its become obvious. The conversations are mostly stilted, awkward. Wukong seems both unable to help himself from talking to him, but unwilling to LOOK at him. Tang’s best guess is that he somehow doesn’t recognize him, Had he really changed that much in the time they’d been apart? Had he really lost so much affection for his old master that he could no longer recognize him beneath a slight change in appearance? That might be the reason the Hurt finally starts to win in the eternal standoff between Joy and Sorrow in how this whole thing makes him feel.
And maybe it’s something simple, maybe Wukong is just barely starting to lower his guard a bit. Maybe just sharing a space with the man who once was the love of his life his master was finally starting to chalk over the rough edges his long since broken heart would constantly stab into him with. and he just SAYS something. Something probably innocuous, something he’d said a million times on the Journey alone. And to Tang it just... feels like he’s mocking him, like he’d known this whole time and had just been playing with his emotions in a way he wouldn’t have tolerated back then- so why should he tolerate it now?
And the first words out of his own mouth are “Bad Monkey!” and Wukong freezes as Tang begins to lecture him
How he’d spent a solid third of his time immortal in mourning over him, how he’d been the one to tell Baije and Wujing that it would be a disgrace to his memory to believe him alive and instead that he’d chosen to cut the lot of them out of his life, despite how much HE’D wanted to believe it too. How hurt he was to find out that not only he HAD been ignoring them for so long but also that he’d apparently had apparently not even recognized any of them when they HAD all seen each other again! How much he’d missed him, how happy he’d still been to see him again.
Yes, yes, pathetic, emotional baldy always bursting into tears at the simplest of things nothing’s changed etcetera etcetera- He hadn’t been lying on new years when he said he had a million questions, but all he really wanted to know was why? Why did he cut them out of his life, why did he shut HIM out? Why did you disappear for 500 years Wukong?
And Wukong reaches out, his hand is- shaking? and removes the glasses from right off his face--normal glass obviously, Baije had insisted they completed the scholarly look and annoyed him into compliance--
“You’re-” he hesitates, looks, almost afraid? “You’re not a reincarnation..?”
Oh...
Well now they both looked the part of fools.
Two sobbing fools clutching to eachother in the alleyway behind Pigsy’s shop, and oh MAN did they have some things to talk about, because Wukong was DEFINITELY coming back with him to his apartment for the night and then first thing in the morning he was going to visit his brothers to internalize that THEY weren’t reincarnations either and then he was going to have to explain where he’d been for that first century while they were all still looking for him to THEM too.
And yes he should have known better than to get attached to him in this way in the first place, it was disgraceful, the sheer misery it had brought alone was proof enough of that. But Wukong was nuzzling into his shoulder, and pressing those strange feeling monkey kisses across his cheeks and jaw,  and his breath was hitching with pure relief and joy and it was for him-
And fuck it, he just didn’t care.

Dragon Raja IV - Chapters 11 & 12 (Abridged)
Hi everyone!
Today's chapters are a little slower than the previous ones, but they have a lot of insight on Nono, Luminous and the nature of their relationship. I also kept more of the original dialog for the same reason.
BTW, this is the point where the illustrations suddenly stopped for some reason so... No more drawings :P
Previous chapters.

Chapter 11
A girl waited in the top lobby of the Black Prince International Financial Center. At 21 years old, Tu Xiaojiao was already known as the "Sophie Marceau of China". She was in that building to meet the legendary "Master Shao", the inheritor of this powerful organization. If anyone else in the world made Miss Tu wait for more than half an hour, she would leave the place immediately, but Mr. Shao was different, he could offer her the role of her life, so she decided to stay in the waiting room.
When the receptionist finally allowed her to enter Shao's office, she found him next to the window, reading a poem out loud. She had to wait for him to finish for fifteen minutes, her high heels started making her feet feel numb, wondering if he was mocking her, Shao didn't even notice her presence. To her dismay, once he finally saw her in his office, it didn't make much of a difference, since Shao only had one topic in his mind, his adored senior was back.
Miss Tu tried to be polite, and asked to know more about this "senior" girl. When Shao was younger, he had a girlfriend, she was actually one year younger than him, but she demanded to be referred as his senior and he obsessed over her for the rest of his life. He even showed miss Xiaojiao a picture of himself and his senior back when they were a couple. Tu Xiaojiao was confused, in the tiny photograph, there were two children, one looked like Shao and by his side, there was a girl who seemed completely indifferent towards him. This was cut from a kindergarten group photo, and he carried it in his wallet ever since.
Shao had everything at his disposal since he was born, his focus in the entertainment industry was nothing but a hobby. He could visit any place that he wanted, he could buy any piece of clothing and of course, he could date some of the most beautiful women in the world. But he didn't want any of them as his wife. The woman of his life had to be someone who would make him beg for her affection, someone who would make him kneel in her presence. The only woman who could make that to him, was Chen Motong.
Every time that Miss Chen came back to the country, he felt like a five year old all over again, but getting her heart wouldn't be an easy task. She acted cold and demanding, when she arrived he asked her out for dinner but she just wanted to borrow a car from him and left. He heard about an Italian man, apparently her boyfriend and he couldn't learn anything else about him, it was driving him crazy, but he received some information that brought some hope back into his eyes. Miss Chen had a friend in town, and he was in the hospital. Shao left his office with Miss Tu in it, on his way to meet Mr Luminous.
Young Lu was also disheartened because of Nono, although, his reasons were different. His 91st attempt to save her also ended in failure. When he realized that they were once again going to die, Nono desperately tried to make him react, but he lazily waited in the car seat for the whole scenario to restart, frustrated and annoyed, as the gravity of the situation slowly became less palpable. He looked to his side and saw Nono's face looking at him. Her expression was as ruthless as ever but in her eyes he saw deep sadness, he almost felt like hugging her before they died but the simulation ended. To him, death meant that he would have to start all over again, but for Nono, every single time it meant a genuine end.
To interrupt his depression, a young, short, overweight man entered his room. He called himself a friend of Miss Chen and Luminous thought for a second that she sent him there to get him out of the hospital, but Shao was there to speak.
He started making questions, in particular, who was this Italian scumbag that he heard about? Tragically for him, Luminous spoke highly of Caesar's fortune, personality and actions, and to make matters worse, he wasn't only Chen's boyfriend, but her fiancé.
A depressed Shao proceeded to tell an anecdote from his childhood. When he was studying in the United Kingdom, Shao felt belittled next to ehe aristocratic children that studied with him, so he started bragging about his own family's wealth and promising other kids money for listening to him, when he tried to show off in front of Nono, she beat him up and told him to call her "Senior Sister".
The school's Rugby matches also got violent, Shao played aggressively, so the other kids retaliated against his attitude by deliberately kicking him in the face and hitting him with the ball. His front teeth got broken as there was no coach present to stop them. He sat down on the grass, defeated, when Nono took his place in the match, she fearlessly rushed into a defense of fifteen boys while Shao swore to his heart that one day he would marry that girl, even if he had to kneel and crawl in front of her.
Shao compared himself to the protagonist form "The Great Gatsby", who desperately needed to be with his love interest, Miss Daisy.
-Why should a girl be with a man who needs her?
She should be with a man she needs. My senior sister doesn't need me, I am the one who needs her.
Before Shao left, Luminous reminded him of a scene in "Journey to the West" where Tang Sanzang found a silly monkey who lived behind a waterfall. The cowardly monkey recognized Tang's strength and left his hidden home to follow him around the world. There are two types of monkeys in the world, the smart ones that can survive out there on their own, and the silly ones, who need a master they look up to.
Shao understood his metaphor and he felt encouraged. Realizing he could trust the strange mental patient enough to untie one of his hands, Shao gave Luminous a can of beer and they toasted. When Shao left, Luminous took a syringe from the side table and injected himself with more sedatives. This was his 92nd attempt.
Shao returned to his office, motivated and lively.
-I met a new brother today!
He encouraged me to come back here, he's a philosopher and his words are very touching!
People living in mental hospitals are all experts in this kind of stuff.
He realized that he left without saying goodbye to Miss Tu, but his apology wasn't answered, because the girl in his office was Nono. She was drinking, looking tired, she didn't wear any makeup and silently stared at the window.
Shao was determined to win her over, but Nono answered most of his questions briefly and coldly. She didn't want to speak with him, she was just there to return the car keys and now she wanted to leave.
Shao's pitiful voice tone softened her attitude a little so she asked him for some gin with ice. Nono drank the whole glass in one sip and asked for a refill. She had another glass, and another.
- Senior sister, is someone bullying you?
- Who could possibly bully me?
- Usually no one, but aren't you engaged now?
- Caesar wouldn't do that, don't worry about it, just take care of yourself.
- Are you really going to marry an Italian? Those guys spend their money so recklessly!
- Could you give me a better reason not to marry him? Who are you to say those things? Stop messing around and just confess your intentions.
- I'm your boyfriend from kindergarten! If you gave me a chance instead I could be endlessly more confident and...
- You? "Endless"? Nono was so angry that she laughed.
Shao Kneeled and asked Nono to be his girlfriend instead. He kneeled in one knee, so she asked him to kneel on both like he used to, and he did, but not for begging, he used to do so as punishment. Nono didn't like his subservient attitude.
- We were just classmates, I was wrong to treat you so hardly, but you don't have to hold on to me, I am engaged and you could marry just anyone.
Shao kept begging, Nono deflected every single one of his arguments until he recited Luminous's "Journey to the west" reference. His delivery was incredible, but she had no reaction to it, she looked at her glass with tired eyes. She got up on her feet and entered the elevator.
After she left, Shao was avidly celebrating, he interpreted her reaction as progress and showed off in front of his employees.
Nono stopped at a small ramen restaurant to warm up her rain-soaked body. Chu Tianjiao was her last clue and she lost it. If Luminous was actually sick, why didn't she give up on him yet?
Why did she feel the need to insist on his case? This wasn't only about her, every moment she spent in the middle of nowhere, escaping from the secret party, she got Caesar in trouble. How was she supposed to explain this to them?
She had to admit that she cared too much about Luminous's well-being. She wouldn't doubt to give him her diving suit, she immediately called him last year when she and Caesar were overwhelmed by Scythe ferrets to warn him of the impending danger and now that the whole world was against him, she kept insisting on proving his sanity. Regarding his feelings for her, she comforted herself with positive thoughts. Who didn't have a crush on a senior girl at some point in his life?
Zero was great for him, so was Isabelle, if she had known Erii in person, Nono would have considered them to be "such a fucking perfect match".
Over the last few years, this petty boy had grown up, he became more energetic, better dressed and gained so much experience, yet he kept holding on to her. She left Shao's office without saying a word because she recognized those words belonged to Luminous. They were about Luminous.
- Chen motong, you're such a fool, you messed everything up.
Chapter 12
An exhausted Su Xiaoyao leaned back on her office chair, she had spent a long day on work meetings and in the middle of the night her phone kept ringing. This was her life ever since she had to leave school to take over her father's business. She had gained some weight ever since but no one really cared, she was still one of the top bachelorettes in the city and she had just accepted a blind date, excited to take a break.
During the student reunion, seeing Luminous made her cry a little. It wasn't because she used to have a crush on him during their high school years, she just realized that those carefree days would never repeat themselves. Back in the day, she and the other girls used to sit on the basketball courts to see Luminous play basketball. Even the air felt different.
Su took her high heels off and put her feet on her desk to take a quick nap, but her phone interrupted her attempt to display an urgent text message. It was Liu Miaomiao, her old rival in love.
- Su Xiaoyao, find a way to get here, quick! They put our senior brother in a mental hospital!
Game level: Gungir light, 101st load.
Tumblr media
- So, where did you get that rocket launcher again?
- I found it under the seat...
The whole fight seemed extremely rehearsed by now, Luminous always knew exactly where to shoot, it almost looked like he could predict the future.
- Did you learn that in your special training? I want to take that special training too!
Nono slowly became the most problematic element in the simulations, she didn't retain her memories after every attempt like he did. This was probably the first time Luminous felt something other than absolute admiration towards her, she became a little annoying, but he couldn't really blame her. They got in the car and tried to escape, but one of the tires was damaged.
- Are you hungry? I just found some nuts in this car!
He knew Nono was trying to calm him but he was still a little anxious, he repeated the steps to replace the tire in his mind but the car-wheel escaped his hands and rolled over the highway.
His tantrum surprised Nono, who dropped her snacks all over the floor. Ming·Z paused time and got out of the car.
He noticed that Luminous asked to reset his last six attempts instead of waiting for his death, he seemed far more tired than usual after his conversation with Shao, it made him reflect about his feelings for Nono to the point of getting distracted in battle.
- First of all, I'm not the only monkey that she brought out from the waterfall, second, I am the one who needs her, she doesn't need me.
- Brother, I expected you to regret going to Cassell College, you wouldn't be so sad otherwise.
- I don't regret it, if I hadn't gone to Cassell College, I wouldn't know my senior brother nor my senior sister or the boss, nor would I know Finger, the Japanese "Lonesome George" brothers... And Erii.
Luminous ignored Ming·Z's snarky remarks and got a better hold of his feelings.
- I always ran after my senior sister, I like her so much that it makes me very sad that I can't be with her. Caesar was born with everything, he could have married any girl he liked but he picked the only one I cared about.
Suddenly I realized that I'm wrong, that was just wishful thinking on my part.
There are more people for me out there, Erii liked me, but Nono was the only one I had eyes for. Nono doesn't need me, I'm the one who feels at ease when I follow her, like she'll feel relieved when she marries the boss. She wouldn't feel like that if she were with me and to pursue her is to act on my most selfish side, why did my senior brother support me?
- Your senior brother wasn't that upright, don't you think?
- Finally, are you willing to admit that he's real?
- Okay okay, Johann Chu really does exist, but there is something wrong with him and you need to get him back"
- Then I'm relieved.
Ming·Z confirmed more things, the city was closed on all exits due to the weather conditions and the Nibelungen was invading their reality on a large scale.
- Thank you, Ming·Z·Lu. Why do you call yourself Ming·Z? You deliberately used my cousin's name"
- No, my name is Ming·Z·Lu, there has always been a Ming·Z·Lu in your life and that's me, not the fat boy in your uncle's house.
Luminous went back to the car, picked the dozens of floating snacks and put them back in Nono's palm one by one.
- Sister, don't worry, you will be fine, I will definitely find a way, I changed my mind, I will attend your wedding, I'll see you in your white dress holding orange flowers, walking on a red carpet full of happiness... Maybe you should throw the bouquet in my direction.
Three girls were sobbing next to his bed when he woke up, Chen Wenwen was the first face he recognized, followed by Su Xiaoyao and Liu Miaomiao. Su was one of the most influential persons in town, so she demanded that her old classmate got released from the hospital.
They took him out on a car and decided to stop on a luxurious bar. They all felt a little insecure about what they were wearing, so Su Xiaoyao asked her driver to bring them their old school uniforms.
Sitting at the bar, after multiple drinks, the girls kept reminiscing of their old days in high school, Luminous past in this reality was the same as Johann's, including his Saxophone recitals at the cultural festivals. He used to envy Johann so much back then...
He stood up and told everyone that he was going to the bathroom, but he changed back to his normal clothes and got out of the bar. A man with a motorized tricycle was waiting for potential passengers outside and Luminous gave him his expensive watch as insurance for borrowing his small vehicle.
He drove all the way to the Number 10 highway and entered the Nibelungen again. Odin was waiting for him far away, he didn't say a word but he slowly raised his lance. Luminous turned around and left the god's prison.
Back in his old apartment, Finger had befriended Luminous's aunt and kept doing shores for her. Nono came back to the place and they argued about their course of action.
- If I had known this was going to happen, I wouldn't have rescued him from that theater.
- Feels like you stepped in bubble gum and you can't take it off.
Finger suddenly left the room and came back with the news, Luminous had left the hospital with three old classmates. Nono grabbed an umbrella and ran out. She knew the bar and she knew about Su Xiaoyao, they weren't going to be hard to find.
By the time she arrived, the three girls were arguing after Luminous left. They actually tried to blame each other, the way they admired him was surprising to Nono. Suddenly, Luminous came back and justified his absence by saying that he went to a convenience store to get something to eat.
Nono watched them from the dark, feeling really stupid, there was a strange obsession that she couldn't let go of. In fact, she should have driven away the silly monkey that pestered her long ago, the more she helped him, the more he would rely on her. This wasn't good for any of them, but she couldn't bear to refuse.
She was afraid that he would end up crying alone in the wilderness, where no one could listen to him. She hoped that one day he could become one of those smart monkeys who run around happily, but maybe this silly monkey was smart from the beginning and she was pitying someone who didn't really need her.
She strolled under the heavy rain, her clothes were soaking and stuck to her body, it was a long way back to the uncle's house but she wanted to walk alone. She felt colder and colder and for the first time in her life she missed the Golden Iris Academy. She felt like going to a ramen stand again but there were no businesses in sight, however, there was a phone booth.
One call, that's all she needed to give away her location, Caesar made her memorize an emergency number long ago, it was the right thing to do, the person she should trust the most in this situation was not Finger or Luminous, but Caesar. Dialing felt like betraying her old classmates, but she started pressing the numbers.
"No, no, no, no, no, don't be like this, don't be like this"
Subconsciously, she looked aside and saw a small boy in the rain, looking at her from the other side of the glass. What was such a young boy doing out there on his own?
He was delicate and beautiful, like a porcelain doll.
- Are you looking for me? She asked.
The expressionless face of the boy slowly got horrifyingly distorted by the raindrops on the glass. She couldn't breathe due to an overwhelming sadness, so she opened the door but the boy was not there anymore. She took the calling card out of the booth and hanged up the phone.
Rome, Italy.
Caesar was waiting in front of a phone, he was under a lot of pressure, but the moment he received Nono's call, all of his problems would be over, yet the phone was silent.
The family elders felt like Luminous had stolen something that belonged to their heir, so they suggested that he cancelled his marriage.
- No, there are only two people in this world who can dissolve that engagement, Nono and me.
To avoid being put under heavy suspicion, he had to act calm and decisive, like he did a few days ago, when he released the monsters from the ice cellar to find the fugitives. Parsi entered the room and informed Caesar about the worsening weather conditions in Beijing, this type of climate phenomenons usually signaled the awakening of powerful dragons.
Luminous, the never-existing Johann Chu, the grim reaper, it was all starting to make sense. Caesar instructed Parsi to prepare his private jet and his desert eagles, he also dissuaded Parsi from going with him. At the lionheart club, president Babru informed the former president and dragon slayer Abdullah Abbas that Caesar wanted to team up with him to hunt the dragon down.
Intrigued, Abdullah accepted and instructed everyone to get ready.
To be continued, final update on Monday.

(Maritime) Silk Road Singularity
Yeah, okay, Singularities aren’t hip anymore now that NA is at the Lostbelts, but this works better as a Singularity.
Anyway, this is the starting point of a long term project I’m working on for fun! :) I’ll probably flesh out things a lot more (like the fan servants), as I go along.  I just want somewhere to put all of this.
--
Background:
-Seventh century, some point during the years 610-640 (reign of Emperor Heraclius of the Byzantine Empire)
-The Umayyad Caliphate and Muawiyah I would be after this with the first Arab Siege of Constantinople during the 670’s.
-Should coincide with the reign of the Emperor Taizong of Tang (626-649), who is responsible for the reopening and revitalization of the Silk Road during his time.
Locations:
-Chang’an (China, repeated capital city of different dynasties; Start)
-Guangzhou (Canton, set off on sea route here)
-Palembang (Srivijaya, Sumatra)
-Vallabhi (Maitraka Dynasty, West India)
-Alexandria (Egypt)
-Constantinople (Byzantine Empire; End)
Plot:
Very suddenly, travel across the continental Silk Road has ground to a halt, despite this being the period of time when the Tang Dynasty was reviving that trade.  Chaldea needs to determine the root of this disruption and repair the historic route between the East and West.
Ray-shifted into Northern China, you and Mash find yourselves brought to the court of Emperor Taizong of the Tang Dynasty in Chang’an.  There, you meet with Xuanzang, who regales you with many complaints about how unnecessarily difficult her journey West was made on her way back.  Apparently, a Byzantine army has been trying to reignite years old conflicts in what is  already a very tumultuous region on the Eurasian continent.  Emperor Taizong further informs you that communications between the Tang Chinese and the court of the current emperor of the Byzantine Empire, Emperor Heraclius, have ground to a halt.  Emperor Taizong orders you to accompany Xuanzang to Constantinople via the maritime Silk Road to remind The Byzantine Empire why it should foster peace and continue trade with the Tang.
After setting off from Guangzhou, you and the crew makes their way down to Indonesia and into the territory of the Srivijaya Kingdom on the island of Sumatra.  There, you meet Xuanzang’s self-proclaimed disciple Zheng Wenming, who helps guide you from Sumatra and on towards India.  Eventually, the crew makes landfall in West India, where you are taken to the court of Emperor Harsha of the Maitraka Dynasty.  Xuanzang and Harsha reminisce about her previous visit, and the warmth of the exchange inspires the fair-minded ruler to accompany your party onwards to Constantinople.
Continuing on, you sail around the Arabian Peninsula, and dock on Egypt’s East coast before finally heading north to Alexandria.  There, your group is accosted by an Egyptian force led by Cleopatra, who is aligned with the main foe of the singularity.  Through her, you determine the identity of your enemy and his motives.  Like Cleopatra, Emperor Justinian has manifested as a servant and attempted to seize power in a time that is no longer his.
General Theme:  Is the meeting and exchange of cultures inherently good or bad?  Is the way people and cultures change and adapt for the better, or for the worse?  Is what gets lost worth what is gained?
New Original Servants (Support Characters):
-Yijing: A well-traveled Buddhist monk from China who was inspired by the likes of Sanzang.  He traveled and wrote of his journeys through Srivijaya and India.  In this singularity, Yijing is of the Caster Class, and also a woman.
-Emperor Harsha: Emperor of North India during the early to mid 600’s CE.  He was known for uniting a divided Northern India and founding a prosperous, peaceful empire that was a center of culture and education.  Sanzang visited this empire in his famous journey West, and spoke very positively of the emperor.  In this singularity, Harsha is of the Rider Class.
New Original Characters:
-Emperor Taizong: An emperor of the Tang Dynasty of China and the emperor responsible for revitalizing the Silk Road and a new era peace in East Asia.  I’m still debating on whether or not I want to make them a servant and of what class.  I think I need to do more research on them first.
-Emperor Heraclius: The emperor of the Byzantine Empire during this period.  There are records from his reign regarding details about China.  He is known for his military campaigns and efforts to rebuild the strength of a threatened Byzantine Empire.
-Emperor Justinian I: The primary antagonist of this singularity and the one holding the holy grail.  He sees the Byzantine Empire a century after his reign as flagging, and wishes to rebuild it under his direction with his previous successes.  In this, he is a Berserker.
Returning Characters:
-Xuanzang Sanzang: Sanzang works to glue a lot of the characters in this singularity together.  In life, Sanzang was welcomed back to China by Emperor Taizong with great prestige, which he refused.  While in India, Sanzang stayed in the court of Emperor Harsha.  Sanzang was also one of Yijing’s primary influences in life.
-Cleopatra: In this, Cleopatra serves as a representative of the exchange of the old and the new as she recalls her time and her regrets as the last pharaoh of Egypt’s Ptolemaic dynasty.
Miscellaneous:
-The map would have to be pretty big for this singularity, but the stops wouldn’t actually be that numerous.  I imagine it as kind of vague in the Okeanos sort of sense.
-I feel like there’s definitely more previously used servants that could be applied to this singularity--ones who were either victims of changing circumstances, or were the catalysts for change themselves.

Do you have any tips for naming RWBY OCs? I'm planning a fic that requires a couple of OCs, but I'm having problems naming them cause the only names I can think of are modern names like Sara.
Buckle in Anon, because I happen to have some Thoughts about this matter.
Here’s my all-encompassing Guide To RWBY Names:
RWBY has a TON of unique worldbuilding traits that make character building especially fun for this setting. These include:
Literary allusion
Aura color
Semblance
Team/academy
Kingdom of origin
Faunus trait (if any)
Only a couple of these can help with naming, but I do think that having a nice, strong character theme that binds all of these character building elements unique to RWBY together will make naming easier. The themes I find easiest to structure my character around are their literary allusions.
RWBY is a derivative work; it pulls many elements including style, elements of setting, character design, and arc tropes from the magical-girl-school-battle-anime genre. However, all of its characters also have literary allusions (“literary” being a flexible term; I basically mean any work of fiction.) To use an example as to why I think literary allusions are easiest to frame a character around, let’s take our very own Sun Wukong, for instance.
Sun Wukong is a main character in the Chinese folklore epic Journey to the West. In RWBY, he is a monkey Faunus (Sun Wukong being the name of the monkey in JttW) who uses a bo staff to fight (the JttW monkey uses a shrunken down giant pillar to fight) and whose Semblance is making duplicates of himself (which the JttW Sun Wukong is prone to doing) and accompanies/slightly irritates someone along a journey (Tang Sanzang in JttW, Blake in RWBY).
These elements mostly rely more heavily on their inspiration than on anything else. Now, this, like all these rules, are more suggestions than rules – “Blake” as a name doesn’t exactly have anything to do with Beauty and the Beast, but “BELLadonna” (Belle) certainly does.
That being said, what should you use for allusions? Well, anything, really. Any piece of creative fictional media can be a good inspiration, because it conflates a mental view of the character with another that you are more familiar with. However, the literary allusion is not the most important part, so don’t stress about it too much. I actually have a current character (Fuchsia) whose unifying aesthetic is more about their Faunus trait than about their allusion. To each their own.
What words are viable names in RWBY?
It has been established that color names are a post-war naming fad that stuck around; not many of our older characters have color names, but that doesn’t mean that there can’t be exceptions that do.
However, “color” names doesn’t always mean literal colors; it just means something that evokes a color, or more commonly, evokes their character’s theme, which, though it is usually their associated Aura or hair color, is more evidently their literary allusion (take the name Adam Taurus, which evokes the “bull man” part more than his black-and-red color scheme.)
In my book, acceptably color or theme-evoking types of names include:
Hues
Words for warmth or coolness of color
Words for shading or texture
Art terms
Words to describe temperature
Weather terms
Natural phenomena
Animals
Plants (commonly trees and flowers)
Scientific names or classifications
Elements
Celestial bodies
Pagan deities/spirits
Adjectives describing their personality with name suffixes
Latin roots to create a word that describes them
All of these, in whatever language you desire, are completely acceptable!
In conclusion, I would recommend choosing a character inspiration (literary allusion) for them, no matter how minor or unimportant to their actual relevance in the story, and centering your names off of that. The above list should help you scour the internet for a name you like – and yes, I do a lot of internet scouring. I didn’t stumble across a name like “Kubaryi” without picking it out of the criteria I listed.
I hope this helps! Happy hunting!

Meanwhile, you were tasked with getting some firewood, which you had just finished.
So now, you were sitting under the shade of a large tree, drawing the one and only Sun Wukong.
That grumpy monkey, always making you feel such strong emotions. From happiness, to anger, to sadness. He just seemed to become the center of your world.
He made you feel like you were the only girl that mattered in his life, and he never judged you for your appearance.
Maybe that's why you began to draw him so much?
To help alleviate and pour your feelings into something?
You knew that Wukong wasn't one to worry nor care about love, always calling it useless, unnecessary or even weak.
It hurt to hear him say it over and over again, but even so, you were happy to be by his side.
Maybe one day you'd be able to get over your feelings.
With a sad hum, you looked over the page, unaware of the newcomer.
"Drawing again, are we Princess?"
Your hands quickly pulled the sketchbook towards your chest, hoping that the being in question hadn't seen the drawing.
At that moment, you thanked your body for being more voluptuous, allowing the sketchbook to be more hidden.
You looked up, seeing Wukong rest comfortably on a branch right above you, munching away on an apple. He expected an answer, but you turned away, trying to hide your nervousness.
"It's my little secret."
You stood up, trying to get away, but before you knew it, your sketchbook was snatched away. Wukong took the book from his tail, now on a higher branch, and began looking through each page with curiousity.
"Wukong!"
Said monkey turned his attention to you, only for it to quickly go back to your sketchbook.
You shrieked when he began flipping through.
He had always been curious about what you drew, since you never showed anybody. You would always get embarrassed when someone asked to see it, always downplaying your skills. But looking at it all, he knew he was right.
It was all beautiful.
Everything was drawn so well, with details and shading making it look much more realistic.
Especially his portraits.
Seeing how much more detail went into his drawings made his ego shoot up.
Of course.
He WAS the best looking one of the group.
Who wouldn't want to draw him?
As he continued to look through the book, you were scrambling up the tree.
"I didn't realise I was such an inspiration for you. "
You picked up the pace, now cursing your plush and less athletic body.
You'd definitely have to improve on your tree climbing skills later.
"You sure do like drawing me alot~."
Finally reaching the top, you snatched the book, holding it to your chest. The hue of red that had washed over your face became much darker.
Just how much had he seen?
"Not bad at all."
You're a bit shocked at the comment, expecting something a bit more harsh-
"But you didn't capture my brilliance enough~."
You yelped, not expecting him to whisper so closely in your ear, and unconsciously turned around. The shit eating grin on his face made you stutter, and you proceeded to climb down before embarrassing yourself even further.
Wukong couldn't help the laugh that left him.
He'd never say it out loud, but he enjoyed teasing you, seeing that blush cover your face when you became embarrassed or listening to you stumble over your words.
It was cute.
You stormed off, mumbling under your breath, unaware of the small blush that covered Wukong's face.
It was there and then that he had decided.
He was definitely going to amp up his teasing.
You were the first woman to ever give him those type of nervous reactions, to ever catch his interest.
...
You're the first woman he's ever fallen in love with.
And hopefully, if those drawings meant what they did, you felt the same.
...
..
.
Maybe he could make you his wife?
Sorry for any spelling/grammar errors!

Ten Interesting China’s Novels
Journey to the West
Journey to the West is a classic Chinese mythological novel. It was written during the Ming Dynasty based on traditional folktales. Consisting of 100 chapters, this fantasy relates the adventures of a Tang Dynasty (618-907) priest Sanzang and his three disciples, Monkey, Pig and Friar Sand, as they travel west in search of Buddhist Sutra. The first seven chapters recount the birth of the Monkey King and his rebellion against Heaven. Then in chapters eight to twelve, we learn how Sanzang was born and why he is searching for the scriptures, as well as his preparations for the journey. The rest of the story describes how they vanquish demons and monsters, tramp over the Fiery Mountain, cross the Milky Way, and after overcoming many dangers, finally arrive at their destination - the Thunder Monastery in the Western Heaven - and find the Sutra. 1984
Winston Smith toes the Party line, rewriting history to satisfy the demands of the Ministry of Truth. With each lie he writes, Winston grows to hate the Party that seeks power for its own sake and persecutes those who dare to commit thoughtcrimes. But as he starts to think for himself, Winston can’t escape the fact that Big Brother is always watching...  A startling and haunting novel, 1984 creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing from start to finish. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions—a power that seems to grow, not lessen, with the passage of time. (Amazon.com)
When Red is Black
When the murder of a woman is reported to the Shanghai police while Inspector Chen is on vacation, Sergeant Yu is forced to take charge of the investigation. The victim, Yin Lige, a novelist known for her banned book, has been found dead in her tiny, humble room off the stairwell of a converted multi-family house. It seems that only a neighbor could have committed the crime, for the building is kept locked at night. But there is no apparent motive. Sergeant Yu tries to unravel the reclusive woman’s past and begins to realize it may have larger political implications. The Cultural Revolution might be more than 30 years in the past, but its effects can still be felt at every level of Chinese society. (Amazon.com)
War trash
Ha Jin’s masterful new novel casts a searchlight into a forgotten corner of modern history, the experience of Chinese soldiers held in U.S. POW camps during the Korean War. In 1951 Yu Yuan, a scholarly and self-effacing clerical officer in Mao’s “volunteer” army, is taken prisoner south of the 38th Parallel. Because he speaks English, he soon becomes an intermediary between his compatriots and their American captors. With Yuan as guide, we are ushered into the secret world behind the barbed wire, a world where kindness alternates with blinding cruelty and one has infinitely more to fear from one’s fellow prisoners than from the guards. Vivid in its historical detail, profound in its imaginative empathy, War Trash is Ha Jin’s most ambitious book to date. (Amazon.com)
Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze
When Young Fu arrives with his mother in bustling 1920s Chungking, all he has seen of the world is the rural farming village where he has grown up. He knows nothing of city life. But the city, with its wonders and dangers, fascinates the 13-year-old boy, and he sets out to make the best of what it has to offer him.
First published in 1932, Young Fu of the Upper Yangtze was one of the earliest Newbery Medal winners. Although China has changed since that time, Young Fu's experiences are universal: making friends, making mistakes, and making one's way in the world. (Amazon.com)
The Dark Forest
In The Dark Forest, Earth is reeling from the revelation of a coming alien invasion-in just four centuries' time. The aliens' human collaborators may have been defeated, but the presence of the sophons, the subatomic particles that allow Trisolaris instant access to all human information, means that Earth's defense plans are totally exposed to the enemy. Only the human mind remains a secret. This is the motivation for the Wallfacer Project, a daring plan that grants four men enormous resources to design secret strategies, hidden through deceit and misdirection from Earth and Trisolaris alike. Three of the Wallfacers are influential statesmen and scientists, but the fourth is a total unknown. Luo Ji, an unambitious Chinese astronomer and sociologist, is baffled by his new status. All he knows is that he's the one Wallfacer that Trisolaris wants dead. (Amazon.com)
The Russian Concubine
A sweeping novel set in war-torn 1928 China, with a star-crossed love story at its center.  In a city full of thieves and Communists, danger and death, spirited young Lydia Ivanova has lived a hard life. Always looking over her shoulder, the sixteen-year-old must steal to feed herself and her mother, Valentina, who numbered among the Russian elite until Bolsheviks murdered most of them, including her husband. As exiles, Lydia and Valentina have learned to survive in a foreign land.  Often, Lydia steals away to meet with the handsome young freedom fighter Chang An Lo. But they face danger: Chiang Kai Shek's troops are headed toward Junchow to kill Reds like Chang, who has in his possession the jewels of a tsarina, meant as a gift for the despot's wife. The young pair's all-consuming love can only bring shame and peril upon them, from both sides. Those in power will do anything to quell it. But Lydia and Chang are powerless to end it. (Amazon.com)
Please Don’t Call Me Human
Now Wang Shuo, easily Chinas coolest and most popular novelist, applies his genius for satire and cultural irreverence to one of the worlds sacred rituals, the Olympic Games. In Please Don’t Call Me Human, he imagines an Olympics where nations compete not on the basis of athletic prowess, but on their citizens capacity for humiliation and China is determined to win at any cost. Banned in China for its rudeness and vulgarity, this astonishing, tripped-out novel is filled with outlandish antics that have earned Wang Shuo his own genre, hooligan literature. (Amazon.com)
Where the Mountain Meets the Moon

She encounters an assorted cast of characters and magical creatures along the way, including a dragon who accompanies her on her quest for the ultimate answer.  Grace Lin, author of the beloved Year of the Dog and Year of the Rat returns with a wondrous story of adventure, faith, and friendship. A fantasy crossed with Chinese folklore, Where the Mountain Meets the Moon is a timeless story reminiscent of The Wizard of Oz and Kelly Barnhill's The Girl Who Drank the Moon. Her beautiful illustrations, printed in full-color, accompany the text throughout. Once again, she has created a charming, engaging book for young readers. (Amazon.com)
