She tries to project inexperience as she unwraps her hands, aims for the right kind of first-week-new-recruit jumpy, not you-will-teach-me-to-shoot-one-day jumpy. Trouble claps familiarly her on the shoulder. “Welcome to the shepherds. We’re all cracked here.”

i say i’m not much of a kidfic person and then i chart out the rough extended family dynamic of aunts and uncles for all of the assorted kids. trouble being gwen’s favorite uncle/unofficial mentor is kind of my nod to gwen inheriting a lot of the qualities that made him and moira get along so well. my other favorite activity in this au is Putting Blade Through It. his paranoia is going to be an asset here, but not in the way he expects LMAO

YEAH. We’re just going to have an intense altercation and clashing of opinions viewpoints values and perspectives #at least every other day. LOL #but we will navigate it! #no one on the planet I smooth things over with as fast as Nina. it is lightning-speed reconciliation #because we both move on so quickly in the same way. in that the mood will just lift #we got in a fight the other day. Nina left and stormed out. 10 minutes later I get a text going #‘I’m sorry Maria. I should not have said that about your mother’ #which made me laugh because we weren’t fighting about our mom. She just likes to quote Jacqueline from ever after sometimes out of context #and my mom was on the couch watching me like ‘you’re reconciled???? It’s over?????????’ #because my mom a) is so different from both of us in the speed she processes in and b) has no sisters #0 sisters. 4 daughters. and she still isn’t used to it lol. because my mom’s strength and weakness is that she never gets used to anything! #ALSO Nina told me the other day that I’m the one that taught her to apologize because I would just make her do it when we were kids #not to me but to other people! I would just sit there and explain how verbal acknowledgement of wrongdoing would make things better #and she was always like ‘ughhh I hate it so much. FINE’ because she always does want to make things better #anyway this SHOOK ME TO MY CORE. Because I never thought Nina actually internalized any of the things I’ve said to her ever lol #and she was like ‘yeah you gave me that good habit’ #(I love apologizing. Love to put it into words and I have an intense need to do it immediately and thoroughly) #(tbh it’s only with time that I’ve come to see that other people do not work that way. and need more time. and are not just — #instantly comfortable putting everything into words especially the hard things) #(because it’s not like I’m always driven by more charity and compunction. I just ducking HATE unresolved things not put into words) #(so it helps me feel better. and sometimes you just gotta learn to not say it right away if it’s only going to make things worse #(or learn to say it in different way without words. that actually communicates the sorrow. Thinking about name changes for my au and like, logically, Jayfeather shouldn't be named that anymore since he's named after Crowfeather. Leafpool no longer pines after him for years and years, that gets swapped to Crowfeather- she's more disillusioned than anything. And I just might make it so that Jayfeather and Hollyleaf swap places and Jay is a warrior (if only because medic Hollyleaf is BRUTAL imo and I love it) so Firestar names him. But like... the triplet's names are honestly some of my favorites in the series. So I don't want to change them LMAO.

You would need to convince multiple people— Riel Syndran, chiefly, never mind our own parents—to divert their resources to publicly constructing defenses when Haven is already being rocked by major political turmoil—” “So we tell them to wait a few months.” “And why do we know how long to wait? How do we justify that information?”

in which gwen and sarissa clash over how much to interfere with their parents’ present. discussion of time travel genre beats, spoilers for terry pratchett’s night watch, and why i’m in wip-of-a-wip purgatory with this fic under the cut!

brief au context: there’s a scenario post on the shoh blog from like four years ago about how the ROs would react to their child from the future coming back, and i think that’s fun, so. fic.

one of the direct inspirations for this fic is terry pratchett’s night watch, in which sam vimes goes back in time to the very start of his police career to stop a serial killer and has to preserve the chain of events started by a citizen revolution. my main structural takeaway was the causal chain, or, the list of cause-and-effect events stretching from the past to the points in the present.

narratively, three things have to happen (examples from night watch): (1) the villain has to break the chain, forcing the protagonist to fix it (e.g. the night watch villain murdered young vimes’ original mentor, forcing him to step into that role) (2) the protagonist must also be tempted to break the chain, but ultimately upholds it for the greater good (Vimes repeatedly debating whether he could jumpstart some of the changes that make his present more stable) (3) the self-fulfilling paradox to preserve the chain (vimes being his own mentor)

so this is me taking a stab at (2). however. i do not know what the causal chain looks like because we haven’t finished the main game, so (1) and (3) are kind of in limbo. and therefore: purgatory!

usually i would just make an educated guess and move forward, but this fic will necessarily involve the difficult choices that go into preserving major endgame canon events, so there are gaps in my outline that i simply do not have the information to fill. on the plus side, it does mean i potentially get a burst of inspiration at the end of every month—the reveals at the beginning and end of ch7 were major for determining exactly when to set this. so for now i just daydream about the girls vs remembering there’s no cable car in past haven and they have to walk??? two hours??? to get across town???
