What kinda jobs do you think would the people at Dema have? Especially the ones who work closer with the bishops

There'd probably be multiple layers to their society, depending on how low or high risk one would be when it comes to rebelling against the regime.

I'd say that those allowed to live in the outer rings of Dema are most likely just very standard in nature; the story itself has mostly followed the extremes of society, those fighting against the regime, and those staunchly tightening their fist to retain it, but I feel like SAI showed the middle of what that society looks like.

People have homes, people have jobs. I go back and forth on whether or not they would have some form of currency, but if they it'd be something like those worthless company scrip tokens that were given out out in the 1930s; ones that are only good for dema-approved purchases, in dema-approved stores. All that society knows is what is within it's circular walls.

Still, for society to function, they need people working construction, sanitation, infrastructure; I'd say that those most faithful to the regime are placed in comfortable accommodations; it doesn't so much matter what job you do, but how dedicated you are to the cause, so it appears as though wealth isn't judged by your station, rather your faith. This might seem fair to those within the society, especially one so brainwashed to believe that their only worth is their servitude to the bishops and to vialism, but... It's clear from the outside how fucked up it all is.

Clancy speaks in his letters specifically of serving their bishops faithfully, and feeling a sense of pride to work for Keons before his awakening. I believe that many don't even work for some kind of payment, simply because it's what they were assigned by their beloved architects of their city, and so they carry it out without question...

I'd say that identified high-risk individuals would be watched closely, however. It's shown in NATN, that captured banditos specifically are taken to some kind of compound or re-education centre. They likely are forced to stay there, imprisoned until they are to either be used to "better society"... Or to be disposed of.

Children wearing grey are also present there, and that could be for a number of reasons;

Their parents are known defectors, or the children themselves are seen as "problem children" and are placed in the re-education system

The compound itself is where the new generation of dema citizens receive their first doses of soul-crushing propagandistic education, where they learn the ways of vialism and living in dema

Or, most chillingly, the children were intended to be placed into vials at the age they were at. (I see this one as a personal headcanon that would make dema even more terrible, but I also don't see it likely as at the vialism ceremonies, adults are the only ones present)

The education system would probably ferry these children into their assigned roles, their assigned lives. The bishops would likely have an intricate interconnected system, which takes into account the purposes of all of their test subjects; Once a child is suitably prepared for the life assigned to them, they're placed in one of the districts that requires their service. They likely stay in this job until they die, however, occasionally if their purposes are required elsewhere, they will be reassigned. There's no applying for other purposes, no choice in what they do or where they go, if they're separated from those they love... Wherever their bishop assigns them, they must go. Often, children who are placed in this system and end up in different districts are separated completely. This is just a quirk of the system, as the city is large, and they never know where their friends have gone; all they know is where they've been placed, their purpose, and their given name.

On the most inner circle of dema, are the most trusted advisors and the highest security level criminals. Criminals are kept in aforementioned compounds for sentencing, be it re-education, as bargaining chips agains the rebellion, or to be placed in vials. Even the prisoners, in the mind of Dema's elite and it's citizens, all have a purpose, how nice.

I doubt the bishops would often allow anyone close to them, or their plans. They may allow SOME close advisors and community leaders, but seem to coordinate everything themselves; Though, for whatever reason... Have specific interest in Tyler himself, for the strange power he holds. They also somewhat had/have this specific interest in Clancy, at least Keons did/does, likely because he was/is so deeply interwoven with the banditos, that he was/is a person of interest to them.

But who can know for sure.

morse code vid & a review of BOOKS in tøp history

so, as everyone knows, ned's cozy fireplace had an ad that used morse code. here is that ad and a visual.

please let me know who to credit as the owner of the screen recording

and because nobody i know has any idea what to make of "BOOKS" -- and they have tried -- here's a look at books as they appear in tøp's body of work. just for the hell of it.

here we go!

2016: the cancer cover.

in the cancer music video, a person narrates their own impending death from cancer, and it's accompanied by an explosion books bursting out of a bookshelf. these green circles are just highlighting that this music video also included repeat book designs, like ned's cozy fireplace does.

that video and this one are by the same animator and designer, chris schoenman, who presumably didn't want to make like nine million different books. (but there could be more than one reason.)

the speaker in this song is consuming this media; there's a couple books on his coffee table.

our speaker is writing their own story with their descriptions and instructions to their family as the video goes on.

among the this person's collection of stories are some twenty one pilots songs. we'll see this later too.

2016. heathens.

these drawings on the wall are not books, but they are related to books, as we will see in just a moment. it's reasonable to say these drawings represent something this character feels or thinks about, in some cases over and over.

nico and the niners, 2018.

next, we have tyler/clancy in nico and the niners packing his backpack. we don't see him physically put this red pamphlet/book in his backpack, but given that the scene starts with a bed covered in stuff, shows him packing, and then shows a bed with nothing on it, we can assume the pamphlet got put in too.

the backpack is left for the kids to find along with the bandito clothes.

we know from The Outside that the kids keep the bandito clothes and presumably the backpack with its contents, including the red pamphlet/book.

the leave the city visuals also make a point to show a backpack left behind.

speaking of leave the city visuals:

these visuals fade from trench as a real place to drawings on the bedroom wall in dema.

like heathens, we can assume these drawings depict something that the person who drew them thinks about. because we recognize what's shown, we know they reflect what clancy knows or believes about his world: the figure of the vulture, the neon gravestones, the cage from hoty, the tree from trees and so on.

next:

2021. the vialism pamphlet, released at the same time as choker. it reads "to live fully is to sacrifice all". this is important because it's the first and only time we know what one of these pieces of media the character is consuming is explicitly telling us.

the black pamphlet is a visual parallel for what josh is reading in choker.

2021. christmas saves the year.

we see here that santa also has drawings on his wall. and -- like the speaker in cancer -- is taking in media that includes twenty one pilots stories.

santa's drawings include things he observes in his world (the snowmen, the noodly skeleton and alien keys) and things he believes -- or at least speculates about (the radiant cosmic rays that defeat the snowmen).

this csty video is actually deep af, and i spent six long weeks making a vid on what i think is happening here if you want to watch it. be gentle. i'm doing my best.

these drawings on the wall are a parallel to the drawings on the wall in other places in that they show things the artist thinks or believes about the world they live in.

2022. tyler owns at least two books. they're right there.

2023: ned's cozy fireplace.

lastly, here's some of those same dema-and-trench drawings on the wall in ned's home, looping him firmly into those shared concepts about the neon gravestones, compass E, etc, and a written continuation of The Outside in the form of a letter.

and that's that on that for books in the history of tøp. i think this has absolutely jack to do with why the morse code says BOOKS, but it seemed neglectful not to at least review the topic and see what we can see. what i see: some as-yet-undefined significance in what we take in and how it informs how we understand our world.

fun little fact: the bourbaki group play a foundational role in modern mathematics and it's likely that some of your school textbooks cited bourbaki in the back of the book. so we've all consumed bourbaki book content at some point.

1. when/how did you discover them? + what was the first song you listened to?

I discovered pilots in April 2022, to be more exact, on the 15th of April (I write down all the dates for the balance of the universe)

but my first tøp song ever was Heathens, I think... I think I listened to it right when it was released somewhen in 2016 and was popular af, (even among normies) but then I wasn't interested in them

2. have you been on concert(s)?

haven't been on any concerts in my life 1) cause I'm too smol and scared to go anywhere by myself 2) both my parents are dead, and even if they weren't, they wouldn't let me go anywhere 3) I live in Russia and I am Russian so ig they'll never come here anymore 4) I have not enough money :(

3. do you remember where you were when trench dropped (if you were a fan by then)?

I wasn't a fan actually, but I can say I was listening to various pop music on the radio lol

4. favourite thing about the clique?

ability to investigate and do research... this is crazy. now when I see all this new 10-hour lo-fi video (?) hype train I'm just being like «damn... I'll just sit here and watch it cause I'm not smart enough»

unfortunately I can't remember any of them now when I write it cause I've been away from the fandom for a long time listening to metal and I'm just waiting for the new album at the moment

probably I'd tell them that all this story they created is so cool and deeply thought out that it frickin amazes me
