Tonight's extra-easy plan. I realized we had 2 boxes of the dried peas and everything else needed for it, so Pea Soup Thursday it is!
I did put half a box (so around 500g/around a lb.) of the peas on to soak before I went to bed. And I thought I would save at least an hour--and some sticking to the pot!--by cooking the soup in the Instant Pot.
(Auto-translated link, because I'm lazy that way. Nothing looked super blatantly wrong.)
A whole pack of bacon automatically sounds like overkill to me, but yeah the standard pack size here is pretty small so it should be fine. The one I have there is 140g/5 oz.
Gotta say, the Swedish style pea soup still sounds pretty minimalist to me, but it is tasty. This particular recipe is going particularly minimalist on the seasonings, and I do think I'll also throw in some marjoram and a bay leaf--even if I'm still not tasting well enough to maybe even be able to notice the difference. Also planning to fry the onion a little in the bacon pan, for the extra taste.
This isn't going to be totally a one pot deal, since I would want to cook the bacon in a skillet anyway. But, still pretty simple.
Speaking of simple, I think we'll just have to make do without the crepe-type pancakes. Again. I did consider making some, but I don't really feel like it. It's rare that anyone around here does feel like it. I don't actually recall the Household Swede ever turning any out when he's made pea soup. I haven't tried them in the same meal yet. Reminded to make some separately at some point, though!

My husband brought this tube of burger flavored cheese back from Morrison's, and I never want to hear another European talking shit about American cheese in a spray can.

I get a kick out of finding things so obscure and uninteresting that they do not even have an English wikipedia article.
Like the Swedish (really popular in the north) fast-food dish "Parisare"... the Parisian.
Tumblr media
A size of thick sausage instead of a hamburger patty, often server with mustard, ketchup, and relish. Think bologna, just not as chewy as rubber as some bologna has a tendency to be.

My thoughts on IKEA’s Buffet lol
I had no idea until then that Ikea has a small buffet-style food section.
Additionally, since it's been a while and I've been contemplating changing a few things in my room and it is a furniture store, why not sample their food?
Although it's not the best thing to suggest, I will say that a lot of it tasted interesting. At the very least, give it a shot.
I had never really tried Swedish cuisine, but it was quite good! Especially the desert, nothing should really go wrong with that lmao.

Today its been studies all day. And some time to just relax, decorate the house and enjoying the day. Finally some tomtegröt (porridge). In old Sweden, porridge was often put out for the house elf at Christmas (he looked like a smal gray santa). ✨
In nordic mythology, the house elf is a small being that looks like an old man with a long beard. They are usually dressed in gray and have a gray or red beanie. House elves are strong and good at work. They live close to people, usually in a stable or a barn, but sometimes in the same house as the people. A house elf is grumpy and doesn't want to be seen. But secretly he keeps track so that the people are kind to the animals and take care of the farm in a good way. If the people take care of themselves, they can get help from the house elf with many of the chores on the farm, and the elf creates security on the farm. But if the people, for example, don't give the animals enough food, they can suddenly get a kick in the ass, or an slap from someone they can't see. Then it's the house elf who is on the move and wants them to tighten up. A house elf can be several hundred years old and usually stays on the same farm for several generations of owners. Elves are basically quite friendly and caring creatures, as long as you don't annoy them. To show appreciation and keep house elf happy, people could set out a dish of porridge with a dollop of butter in it on Christmas Eve. Then the house elf was happy. ✨
A translation from Swedis radio, allways loved folklore.

Very late brunch of champions here today: Mr. C stopped by and picked up a couple of seasonal GF semlor from the same bakery again. (Systrar & Bröder here in town.) One each, and he just decided to get them both the same to simplify things since there were plenty of GF ones out today.
I did see another place pretty highly recommended and wanted to try theirs too, but they're wanting advance notice a day or two in advance of pickup. Not today, then!
The cream came out a little flattened on on one side, but these fared surprisingly well considering that the bakery just set them straight down inside that paper sack. 😒 Maybe they were out of boxes or something, I don't know. No bakery paper under them or anything, even--just straight into the bag.

The Bag of Shame. Didn't hurt the taste, at least!
I decided to just start out by chopping that thing in half, because those are NOT small sweet rolls.
Tumblr media
At least the size of a large grapefruit. They are definitely not skinching on the amount of semla you're getting.
It always looks like an awful lot of bread in proportion to the cream, and especially the layer of almond paste lurking under it. But, once again the proportions balanced out better than I would have thought by looking. Nice note of cardamom in the roll, which is not too sweet. Set off pretty nicely by the much sweeter almond and whipped cream.
My blood sugar may or may not thank me, but I probably will finish off the rest of that shortly. May be a good thing I just got another insulin refill the other day! 😊
