New report looks at the changing face of extremist groups in America, June 17, 2023
As hate groups edge toward the political mainstream, experts say they’re employing new tactics and taking on new forms. In June, the Southern Poverty Law Center added 12 conservative “parents’ rights” groups to its list of extremist and anti-government organizations. SPLC’s Susan Corke joins John Yang to discuss why the center added organizations like Moms for Liberty to their list. PBS NewsHour

July 1950 - I may never be happy, but tonight I am content. Nothing more than an empty house, the warm hazy weariness from a day spent setting strawberry runners in the sun, a glass of cool sweet milk, and a shallow dish of blueberries bathed in cream. Now I know how people can live without books, without college. When one is so tired at the end of a day, one must sleep, and at the next dawn, there are more strawberry runners to set, and so one goes on living, near the earth. At times like this, I'd call myself a fool to ask for more...

Ilo asked me today in the strawberry field, "Do you like the Renaissance painters? Raphael and Michelangelo? I copied some of Michelangelo once. And what do you think of Picasso... These painters who make a circle and a little board going down for a leg?" We worked side by side in the rows, and he would be quiet for a while, then suddenly burst out with conversation, speaking with his thick German accent. He straightened up, his tan, intelligent face crinkling up with laughter. His chunky, muscular body was bronzed, and his blonde hair tucked up under a white handkerchief around his head. He said, "You like Frank Sinatra? So sentimental, so romantic, so moonlight night, Ja?"

THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY

1554 – Sir Philip Sidney, English courtier, soldier, and writer (d.1586); the English courtier and poet was one of the leading lights of Queen Elizabeth's court and a model of Renaissance chivalry. His Apostrophel and Stella is one of the great sonnet sequences in English and was inspired by his love for Penelope Devereaux, even though he later married Frances Walsingham. Lest one confuse Renaissance "love" and "marriage" with the modern versions, it should be pointed out that Penelope Devereaux was 12-years old when Sidney fell in love with her, and that Frances Walsingham was 14 when she was married to the 29-year-old courtier. Marriages were arranged then and not made in heaven, more a real estate transaction than a spiritual love match.
Sidney, himself, was in his teens when the Huguenot writer and diplomat Hubert Languet fell in love with him. Languet was 36 years his senior, lived with him for a time, and, when they parted, wrote passionate letters to him weekly. In his youth, Sidney was strongly attached to two young men, Fulke Greville and Edward Dyer, and wrote love verses to them both, a point not lost on gay John Addington Symonds when he wrote Sidney's biography.
Sidney died in battle at the age of 32. According to the story, while lying wounded he gave his water-bottle to another wounded soldier, saying, "Thy necessity is yet greater than mine". This became possibly the most famous story about Sir Phillip, intended to illustrate his noble character.

1864 – Died: Major General Patrick (Ronayne) Cleburne (b.1828), who was an Irish American soldier, best known for his service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. Born in County Cork, Ireland, Cleburne served in the 41st Regiment of Foot of the British Army after failing to gain entrance into Trinity College of Medicine in 1846. He emigrated to the U.S. three years later. At the beginning of the Civil War, Cleburne sided with the Confederacy. He progressed from being a private soldier in the local militia to a division commander. Cleburne participated in many successful military campaigns, especially the Battle of Stones River and the Battle of Ringgold Gap. His strategic ability gained him the nickname "Stonewall of the West".
According to Randy Shilts ("Conduct Unbecoming"), the Major General might have earned the "Stonewall" appellation for less martial reasons. According to Shilts in his bestselling Conduct Unbecoming the Major General was a 'life-long bachelor' and wrote of the great love of his life:
Cleburne's relationship with his twenty-two year old adjutant, Captain Irving Ashby Buck, drew the notice of the general's colleagues. Cleburne's biographer John Francis Maguire wrote that the general's 'attachment' to Buck 'was a very strong one' and that Buck 'for nearly two years of the war, shared Cleburne's labors during the day and his blankets at night.' Buck himself wrote that the pair were 'close and confidential. I habitually messed with him and shared his tent and often his blankets."
Prior to the campaigning season of 1864, Cleburne became engaged to Susan Tarleton of Mobile, Alabama. Their marriage was never to be, as Cleburne was killed during an ill-conceived assault (which he opposed) on Union fortifications at the Battle of Franklin, just south of Nashville, Tennessee, on November 30, 1864.

1869 – Konstantin Somov (d.1939) Russian Artist associated with the Mir iskusstva. He was the son of a curator at the Hermitage, and he attended the St Petersburg Academy of Art from 1888 to 1897, studying under the Realist painter Il'ya Repin from 1894. Somov was homosexual, like many of the World of Art members.

In 1897 and again in 18989 he went to Paris and attended the studios of Filippo Colarossi and of Whistler. Neither the Realism of his Russian teachers nor the evanescent quality of Whistler's art was reflected for long in Somov's work. He turned instead for inspiration to the Old Masters in the Hermitage and to works of contemporary English and German artists, which he knew from visits abroad and from the art journals.
Following the Russian Revolution, he emigrated to the United States, but found the country "absolutely alien to his art" and moved to Paris. He was buried at the Sainte-Genevieve-des-Bois Cemetery.

1874 – Winston Churchill, British prime minister and statesman (d.1965). He was Britain's wartime prime minister whose courageous leadership and defiant rhetoric fortified the English during their long struggle against Hitler's Germany. "I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears, and sweat," he stated upon becoming prime minister at the beginning of the war. He called Hitler's Reich a "monstrous tyranny, never surpassed in the dark, lamentable catalogue of human crime." Following the war, he coined the term "Iron Curtain" to describe the barrier between areas in Eastern Europe under Soviet control and the free West.
In his wonderfully entertaining and informative biography of W. Somerset Maugham, Ted Morgan tells how Maugham once asked Churchill whether it was true, as the statesman's mother had claimed, that he had had affairs with other young men in his youth.
"Not true!" Churchill replied. "But I once went to bed with a man to see what it was like."
The man turned out to be musical-comedy star, Ivor Novello.
"And what was it like?" asked Maugham.
"Musical" Churchill replied.
Another famous story goes that when Winston Churchill was Prime Minister, he was woken one freezing February morning by a Downing Street aide bearing the shocking news that a male Tory MP had been caught having sex with a naked guardsman in St James’s Park.
Noting that it had been the coldest night of the winter, Churchill is said to have remarked: "Makes you proud to be British."

1900 – On this date, Oscar Wilde, Irish writer, wit and raconteur died (b.1854); Prison, after his conviction for "gross indecency," was unkind to Wilde's health and after he was released on May 19, 1897 he spent his last three years penniless, in self-imposed exile from society and artistic circles. He went under the assumed name of Sebastian Melmoth, after the famously "penetrated" Saint Sebastian and the devilish central character of Wilde's great-uncle Charles Robert Maturin's gothic novel Melmoth the Wanderer.
Nevertheless, Wilde lost no time in returning to his previous pleasures. According to Lord Alfred Douglas, Robbie Ross "dragged [him] back to homosexual practices" during the summer of 1897, which they spent together in Berneval. After his release, he also wrote the famous poem The Ballad of Reading Gaol.
Wilde spent his last years in the Hôtel d'Alsace, now known as L'Hôtel, in Paris, where he was notorious and uninhibited about enjoying the pleasures he had been denied in England. Again according to Douglas, "he was hand in glove with all the little boys on the Boulevard. He never attempted to conceal it." In a letter to Ross, Wilde laments, "Today I bade good-bye, with tears and one kiss, to the beautiful Greek boy. . . he is the nicest boy you ever introduced to me."
Just a month before his death he is quoted as saying, "My wallpaper and I are fighting a duel to the death. One or other of us has got to go." His moods fluctuated; Max Beerbohm relates how, a few days before Wilde's death, their mutual friend Reginald 'Reggie' Turner had found Wilde very depressed after a nightmare. "I dreamt that I had died, and was supping with the dead!" "I am sure," Turner replied, "that you must have been the life and soul of the party." Reggie Turner was one of the very few of the old circle who remained with Wilde right to the end, and was at his bedside when he died. On his deathbed he was received into the Roman Catholic church. Wilde died of cerebral meningitis on November 30, 1900.
Wilde was buried in the Cimitiere de Bagneaux outside Paris but was later moved to Père Lachaise in Paris. His tomb in Père Lachaise was designed by sculptor Sir Jacob Epstein, at the request of Robert Ross, who also asked for a small compartment to be made for his own ashes. Ross's ashes were transferred to the tomb in 1950. The numerous spots on it are lipstick traces from admirers.
The modernist angel depicted as a relief on the tomb was originally complete with male genitals. They were broken off as obscene and kept as a paperweight by a succession of Père Lachaise cemetary keepers. Their current whereabouts are unknown. In the summer of 2000, intermedia artist Leon Johnson performed a forty minute ceremony entitled Re-membering Wilde in which a commissioned silver prosthesis was installed to replace the vandalized genitals.
Note: As a general rule, this site does not list persons' death dates - unless their death was something out of the ordinary, a reason for them to be remembered, or because we don't know their date of birth. However, Oscar Wilde desreves special treatment. His name is referenced in this collection of brief biographies far more than any other person. His life, trial, and death had a world-wide effect on gay history.

1955 – Kevin Conroy was an American actor and voice actor (d.2022). He is best known for his voice role as the DC Comics character Batman on the 1990s Warner Bros. television show Batman: The Animated Series, as well as various other TV series and feature films in the DC animated universe.
Due to the popularity of his performance as Batman, Conroy went on to voice the character for multiple films under the DC Universe Animated Original Movies banner, the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham video games, and in fall 2019 he will play a live action Bruce Wayne in the Arrowverse adaptation of Crisis on Infinite Earths.
Conroy was born in Westbury, New York. Conroy was born into an Irish Catholic family which moved to Westport, Connecticut when he was about 11 years old. He moved to New York City in 1973 when he earned a full scholarship to attend Juilliard's drama division, studying under actor John Houseman. While there, he roomed with Robin Williams, who was in the same group as both Conroy and Kelsey Grammer.
After graduating from Juilliard in 1978, he toured with Houseman's acting group The Acting Company, and the following year he went on the national tour of Ira Levin's Deathtrap.
Filmreference.com listed Conroy as having been married, and having a child, though an interview with The New York Times in 2016 stated that he was single. He also said that he was gay.
In the 2016 interview with The New York Times promoting the animated adaptation of The Killing Joke, Conroy revealed that he was gay. As part of DC Comics' 2022 Pride anthology, Conroy wrote "Finding Batman", a story that recounted his life and experiences as a gay man. It received critical acclaim upon release. He was married to Vaughn C. Williams at the time of his death.
Conroy made an effort to conceal his homosexuality throughout most of his career. He spoke in "Finding Batman" about the discrimination he faced once potential collaborators and employers found out about his homosexuality. Conroy has said that on multiple occasions he had been removed from consideration for acting jobs due to his sexual orientation.

Today's Gay Wisdom: The wit of Oscar Wilde
A cynic is a man who knows the price of everything but the value of nothing.
Moderation is a fatal thing. Nothing succeeds like excess.
There are only two kinds of people who are really fascinating: people who know absolutely everything, and people who know absolutely nothing.
To lose one parent, Mr Worthing, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.
We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.
An idea that is not dangerous is unworthy of being called an idea at all.
Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught.
One should absorb the colour of life, but one should never remember its details. Details are always vulgar.
The truth is rarely pure and never simple.
Children begin by loving their parents; after a time they judge them; rarely, if ever, do they forgive them.
Experience is simply the name we give our mistakes.
Illusion is the first of all pleasures.
All bad poetry springs from genuine feeling.
It is better to be beautiful than to be good. But... it is better to be good than to be ugly.
There is nothing so difficult to marry as a large nose.
Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead.
Laughter is not at all a bad beginning for a friendship, and it is far the best ending for one.
There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about.
Now that the House of Commons is trying to become useful, it does a great deal of harm.
The difference between literature and journalism is that journalism is unreadable and literature is not read.
Life imitates art far more than art imitates Life.
It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you place the blame.
The old believe everything, the middle-aged suspect everything, the young know everything.
America had often been discovered before Columbus, but it had always been hushed up.
There is no sin except stupidity.
It is only the modern that ever becomes old-fashioned.
A cigarette is the perfect type of a perfect pleasure. It is exquisite, and it leaves one unsatisfied. What more can one want?
Only the shallow know themselves.
Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future.
He hadn't a single redeeming vice.
A pessimist is one who, when he has a choice of two evils, chooses both.
Whenever people agree with me I always feel I must be wrong.

“Please, Professor! You’ve promised us that you’ll have a guess!” Hannah Abbott whined, nudging the small vial towards Hesperia with her chubby finger. She cleared her throat and smirked at the excited giggles that filled the shabby classroom. The bundle of girls that stayed behind after class whispered something among each other, she tried her best not to listen. Looking around, she let out a loud, heavy sigh, rolling her eyes.
“Merlin’s beard, I swear, if it’s just a transfigured Dungbomb I’ll turn all of you into Puffskeins.“ she threatened them with her cherry wand and a tuft of pink sparkles emerged from its tip with a loud crack. She stiffled a laugh when the girls jumped at the sudden noise.
She tucked her wand into the eyelet sown on the inside of her tweed vest, carefully grabbed the vial and twisted it open with a muffled pop. It puffed out a small cloud of iridescent mist, twinkling as it evaporated around her nostrils. The scent hit her senses like a stunning jinx and she immediately recognized the substance, quickly holding it away from her face, her nose scrunched.
“Come on, that’s a low blow, ladies.” she shook her head at their giggles, masking her grin with a frown.
“I remember when Professor Slughorn made us brew Amorentia in fifth year, the smell of mine made him vomit, though. I nearly failed my Potions O.W.L.s, but that’s just between us.” she shrugged as the students erupted in another wave of giggles. She was just about to cork it again when Parvati gasped.
“Professor, please, please tell us what you smell!”
“Yes, say it!”
“We won’t tell anyone, promise!”
The girls babbled over each other until Hesperia sighed and put it to her nose again, making them squeal in excitement.
“Fine, let’s see…” she whispered and closed her eyes. She carefully smelled the glass edge of the vial, trying her best not to accidentaly dip the tip of her nose in it. Her hand softly shook when the cloud swirled around her again.
“…forest soil…cold wind…”
The girls silently chortled and she playfully shushed them, opening one eye to peek at the group.
“…hm, interesting. My sixth-year Transfiguration schoolbook...” she closed her eye again with a dramatic solemn expression and the girls’ laughter ricocheted off the stone walls, clearly oblivious to the fact that it wasn’t a joke. She suddenly felt overpowered by the thought and all mischief dissapeared from her features. Faint annoyed voices filled her ears.
‘Come on, you know how it goes, Moony! You’ve read the chapter.’
‘I can’t do it if you keep staring at me! What kind of tutoring is that?’
‘Merlin, where the hell am I supposed to look, then? I need to see your wand movement.’
‘You’re insufferable sometimes.’
‘Well, so are you! Maybe you should take your own advice for once and eat the damn…’
“…chocolate.”
There was a few seconds of silence after her shivering sigh before she blinked again and swiftly corked the vial, carefully laying it on the table. The memory floated further and further away from her mind. When Hesperia finally looked up, she was met with wide smiles and pink cheeks as the girls uncontrolably giggled.
“Well, I’m certain that you shouldn’t carry such a dangerous substance around the castle. Five points from Hufflepuff, Hannah, I’m sorry.”
The giggles turned into groans and she continued. “Who brewed it? Come on, don’t get all shy now!”
Susan Bones reluctantly raised her hand, rolling her eyes in the process. She started to open her mouth to protest but Hesperia spoke first.
“I might be very bad at Potions, but even I can recognize such a correct and potent brew. Ten points to Hufflepuff for your impressive skills.” she added in a whisper and winked, making the group sigh in relief and break into chortles again.
“Come on, now, off you go. Shoo. If you miss Charms, professor Flitwick will give me detention.” she waved them off and they thanked her, quickly saying goodbye over their shoulders before they errupted into whispers she could no longer hear.
She stared at the simple vial and walked backwards until she hit the uneven wall, resting her back against it. She turned her gaze to the ceiling, mindlessly scanning the dainty frescoes that peppered it. Her chest was flooded by a familiar scorching pain.
She suddenly heard footsteps accompanied by the sound of wood clicking against wood - a cane - as Remus opened the door with a loud creak and walked out of their office above the classroom. He leaned against the chipped wooden doorframe.
“Pomona was right about the Shrivelfig jam, I even managed to fall asleep for a bit. How did it go?” he softly smiled at her and straightened up, slowly limping down the stairs. She caught a glimpse of his worn-out brown sweater but didn’t respond. She just took a deep breath.
Forest soil. Cold wind. Old schoolbooks.
Chocolate.

Ooo I saw the requests were open 👀 I'll just slide in real quick
❛ share a whiskey with me. ❜ and ❛ you look lonely and lost. ❜
Why do these sentences fit TB! Arthur so much? 😩 I honestly just want to have a conversation with him and offer him words of comfort 💔
Finding Purpose in the End
(Possibly part 1/3, not sure yet)
Pairing: Arthur Morgan x fem!Reader
oneshot: hurt & comfort, light fluff (Arthur's tb isn't diagnosed yet when this takes place.)
summary: You approach a discouraged Arthur for a private conversation and surprisingly find him opening up to you more than you'd have expected.
2200 words, 12 minutes reading time
Everyone was having a blast. The screams and horrors of the swamps were drowned by singing and laughing. Earlier this evening, Arthur, Dutch and John had brought back little Jack. You were just as delighted as most of the people were, you had missed the boy. Days of trying to calm Abigail, of running around in town and asking anyone about an Angelo Bronte were behind you. Once more, everything seemed alright again. You had joined in singing with Karen and Susan, listened to one of Hosea's stories from his younger days and helped Jack with looking for some of his toys. In good spirits and tipsy from a couple of beers you wandered around camp in search for a conversation partner.
You had a destination in mind, but you were too proud to admit that right away. Arthur was the objective you were looking for. Since he was nowhere to be seen outside, you entered the manor house with the expectation of finding him there. Smoothly, you picked up a half empty bottle of whiskey lying on one of the tables, it would give you some excuse as to why you were looking for him. Just sharing a drink as friends. But the truth is, Arthur didn't quite seem like himself when he returned. You could tell that something was on his mind. And though you saw him earlier, sharing a beer with Lenny, you had lost sight of him soon afterwards. His expression after he had sent John away to be with his family had been on your mind the whole evening, and you couldn't ignore the nagging feeling of checking on him.
As there was no sign of Arthur on the first floor, you climbed the staircase. And there he was. Leaning next to the window that was close to his room. Just for a moment, before he noticed you, you studied his figure. His shoulders slouched; his gaze fixed on something in the swamps. You made a firm step, so the floor would creek under your weight, which alarmed Arthur of your presence. He turned around and his hand scratched his beard as he awakened from his slumber of solitude, pushing his chest out ever so slightly, as if he had to appear tougher and stronger when someone's nearby.
A smile formed on your lips. Even if he didn't look in good spirits, like the rest of the gang; you were still happy to see him. "Hope I'm not interrupting?", you asked.
"No. ‘Course not", his hand awkwardly scratched the back of his neck before it found its familiar place on his gun belt.
"Will you share a whiskey with me?", you held up the bottle in your hand.
"Well, if you insist", Arthur teased. He tried to make up for his distraught appearance by giving you a half-hearted chuckle, but you could tell that his thoughts were elsewhere. There was no way of you denying that you had a soft spot for this man. It hurt you seeing him so discouraged. You wouldn't have run off to find Bill for example if you ever thought him in a bad mood. Arthur, on the other hand, was a whole different story.
You plopped the cork and handed the bottle to Arthur, who took a swig.
"I'm really glad you got Jack back. Abigail was on edge the last couple of days...", you said, watching Arthur wipe away a drop of whiskey that had remained in the corner of his mouth.
"Yeah. I mean - you helped too, didn't ya?", Arthur handed you back the bottle. You scoffed: "I tried. All it got me is being beaten up by some boys in Saint Denis." "What? Ya never told me. Ya let those little shits beat ya up?", Arthur looked at you in disbelief. You smiled, winking: "That's why I didn't tell you. Now I'll get mocked for it. I bet, that by tomorrow, the whole gang will know." It was your turn to take a sip. The thought that Arthur's lips had just been where yours now were was very much conscious on your mind. You tried hard not to think about it and concentrate on the conversation.
"Ah, I can keep a secret", Arthur said defiantly.
"Thank you."
"Wasn't hurt seriously, were ya?"
"No", you quickly dismissed it and shook your head. You didn’t want to complain about a couple of bruises, "and stop worrying about me! I actually wanted to talk to you because you seemed a bit...off." You looked at Arthur and instantly regretted the harsh approach you had chosen. Of course, he'd not tell you what's going on now…He looked at you for a moment, without saying something. You had always loved the color of his eyes, however, you didn't like how tired and sad they looked. And then there was something so cool in his expression, you feared he had taked serious offence.
"Off?", he asked, fumbling for a cigarette and a matchstick which he swiped across the floor to light it. You waited until he had taken the first puff. You needed to choose your words more carefully, but you felt the alcohol loosen your tongue and soften your brain.
You admitted, yet again without thinking about it much first: "You look a bit lonely and lost...sometimes."
Well that didn't come out too good either, did it?
But Arthur didn't seem to mind. He just continued to smoke his cigarette in silence, before he handed it to you. You normally weren't an enthusiastic smoker, but you couldn’t refuse Arthur right now. You took it carefully, leading it to your lips and making a small drag.
"Well," Arthur sighed, smugly watching you struggle with the taste of tobacco and nicotine, "Maybe I am a bit lonely and lost."
You were surprised about this confession. Never would you have thought that Arthur was the guy to admit that. You had feared you’d have to drag it out of him one by one - but him telling you? You could definitely work with that.
"We're all lost, Arthur", you said calmly, handing him back his cigarette, "Some people just won't admit it."
After he only whispered a "I guess", he took another pull from the whiskey.
You continued: "But you don't have to be lonely. You know that you got a whole camp full of people caring about you. I care about you", it took you a bit of overcoming to deliver the last sentence, but you were proud you did it. Arthur's and your eyes briefly met, before he directed them somewhere else, probably watching the paint peel off the wall or the holes in the brittle wood that could be called a railing.
"I've been feelin' a bit weak lately. It's harder gettin' up in the mornings, unbearable bein' thrown off my horse…", he complained. His voice was coarse and hushed. It was more like he was talking to himself, and yet you sat close next to him. Maybe it was the alcohol that had him let his guard down just enough to confide in you.
"It pains me to say, Arthur. But you're getting old", you joked carefully. To your delight, you got the desired reaction of a fading smile and a click of his tongue, telling you that he didn't take it personally. The bottle of whiskey stood between you; Arthur's hand rested on the floor only a few inches away from the bottle. You blushed severely, but you put your hand on top of his, looking at him earnestly: "It's okay to feel weak sometimes." You were painfully aware that it was different for Arthur. The gang relied on him, he was the errand boy, the man who did whatever was asked of him. He never disappointed, he never would think of doing it on purpose. "It was a stressful couple of weeks. It’ll get better”, you reassured.
You noticed how his hand tensed and remained awfully still under your touch. As if you had been hunting and confronted an animal, that was now too shocked to run away and yet unharmed and able to flee, if it chose to.
"Ya scared, y/n?", Arthur asked. The way he pronounced your name sent a shiver down your spine - it was heart-breaking. His voice rattled, it was shaken up and dry and you genuinely hoped he’d never have to pronounce your name like this again.
Were you scared?
"Yes", you admitted quickly, giving yourself no time to sugarcoat the answer. Arthur took a deep breath, and you felt his hand relax under yours just a bit, his gaze wandered around the stairwell and when he found nothing interesting to look at, he directed his attention back to you. Simply looking at you. He was searching for something; you were sure of it. Like he didn't trust you enough to not exploit his weakness when the time has come. Like he couldn’t admit he was worried – scared too, because you might laugh at him. Like you weren’t his friend. Like you didn't love him. There was an ever so slight frown, giving it away. At least it looked like that to you.
"I'm a nobody", you further explained, "no family. No relatives. I've been with the gang for barely two years. I had no life before, I have no plans for after. I got nothing to live for, Arthur. That's scary sometimes", there was a tear fighting its way out, but you wiped it away.
"Everything's gonna be okay", Arthur said gently. His hand freed itself from your loose grip and it was now his, which rested on top of yours.
You decided to go on; be open and say what was on your mind: "Even if Dutch's plans work...and we...go to Tahiti? What then? Am I supposed to harvest mangoes all day? See Micah or Bill run around shirtless and sunburnt?" You last sentence had earned a soft chuckle from Arthur, who murmured a "Guess nobody wants to see that..." Arthur lifted his hand from yours to grab the bottle. A thin layer of sweat had formed on both of your hands. You didn't mind. The weather was unbearably sticky and you thought you might have heard the rumble of distant thunder earlier. Arthur handed you the bottle and you emptied it, as there was only a gulp remaining anyways. With the heavy air of an upcoming storm surrounding you, and the alcohol now flowing through your blood, sitting on the floor next to Arthur…you were swimming in a half-conscious bliss. You loved being close to him, even though you weren't talking at the moment.
After a while though, doubts creeped up. Your sense of time wasn’t working at its finest at the moment and you weren’t sure if the two of you had sat in silence for twenty seconds or solid ten minutes. You sighed deeply: "Anyways...I'll leave you be. Sorry for intruding."
"What? Why?", Arthur asked.
"Why what?", you asked back.
"'m I too depressin' for you?", he laughed pitiable.
"No way", you smiled, “I just...don't know...don't want to make you uncomfortable."
"Yer talking damn nonsense. Start sounding like Dutch", Arthur joked, a challenging smile on his face. You laughed, but then only looked at Arthur, not sure now what he wants you to do.
"Stay."
Well, this was a clear message. As you locked eyes with him, the rain started. It was pouring. You heard how people started to seek shelter in the house, and it was only a matter of minutes until Dutch and Molly would pass you to get to their room.
"Can't say no to that", you grinned, honestly relived he was okay with your presence.
"C'mon then", Arthur got up with a grunt and walked to his room. "Let's talk in there."
The door was sloppily closed behind you. Arthur dropped onto his bed and settled for a comfortable position, something in between sitting and lying, his head resting against the wall. You sat down on the floor, your back supported by what you assumed to be the chest where Arthur keeps his clothes. The man watched you and lazily played with his revolver, spinning its wheel, or balancing it on the barrel. There were no cartridges inside, and even if there were, you trusted Arthur to know his weapons. After some silence, you continued your conversation, starting with complaining about the weather and going on with topics that only started coming back to you after a couple of days. A thick fog of inebriation and fatigue hiding the details of the remaining night. You couldn’t even remember who was first to fall asleep, or if one of you just stopped answering to the other’s questions at some point so they gave in to sleep too.
You woke up the next morning, a blanket on top of you. Arthur had gotten up before you, so you were left wondering alone about the spoken or unspoken confessions of last night.
------x
Yeah, sry...this is my first shot at hurt & comfort and I feel like it lacks both lmao, but we all start somewhere I guess. I'll get there.

Drawn after the Quick
(ie Drawn from Life)
Tumblr media
Colored woodcut print by an unknown English artist, generally dated to 1540-1550, possibly depicting Irish kerns who fought for King Henry VIII at the siege of Boulogne in 1544.
All 6 of the men wear a léine (linen tunic) with an ionar (short jacket) over it, and the 4 on the left have a brat (wool mantle). The men have their léinte rucked up to knee length and secured at the waist with a belt or cord. The léinte have the wide hanging sleeves that are typical of 16th c. Gaelic fashion. They also have a deep center-front opening, a feature which matches Burgundian courtier Laurent Vital's description of clothing he saw during his 1518 visit to Kinsale, Co. Cork:
"Generally the men, women, and young girls wear their shirts open to the waist. Most young women and girls have their chests naked to the waist." (translation taken from a lecture by Katherine Bond)
The ionair in this print are very similar in cut to the ionar of the Kilcommon bog outfit. The hat worn by the man in the red ionar is also similar to the hat of the Kilcommon outfit.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The floral scroll design seen on some of the ionair was a popular embroidery motif in England during the 16th-early 17th centuries. It also shows up in 16th c. Irish art like St. Brigid's shoe shrine.
Tumblr media
4 of the ionair and all of the visible scabbards have fringe on them. Fringe was a popular embellishment in 16th c. Ireland. The use of fringe is mentioned in several 16th and early 17th c. descriptions of Irish clothing. Fringes made of wool and fringes made of silk were imported into Ireland during the 16th c.
In spite the claim that it was drawn from life, this print includes some stylistic exaggeration. The sword blades are depicted as having a bulbous tip, which actual Irish ring-pommel swords are not. Compare the swords in the print to this extant 16th c. sword from Tully Lough, Co. Roscommon in the NMI:

The print is currently in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum. https://collections.ashmolean.org/object/737327

There’s a story about Cocteau going to see Proust, who was already working in his cork-lined room. Cocteau brought him some of his early work, and Proust said: 'You clearly could be a great writer, but you must be careful about society. You mustn’t go out, or go out a little, but don’t make it a main part of your life.' I’m not saying that one has to be in a cork-lined room, but I think that one has to have enormous discipline. And the vocation of a writer, like that of a painter, is in some deep way antisocial.

Movement Artist Statement
Disciplines: Painting, Printmaking and Graphic Design.
Movement to me was the natural objects that had been displaced by the sea. The sea washes up shells, sea glass, animal bones, and dead sea creatures. This is where my theme came from. Towards the end, it developed into how the shore looks when waves wash up.
I started off with the broad idea of the movement of time, I realised that was too big to explore in six weeks so I went looking for an idea that would work with me. I ended up looking at the sea and then narrowed it down further to objects I find when I walk the beach down home.
This concept was enjoyable to me as I got to spend time with my family when I gathered my primary research from the beach down home in West Cork.
I explored my chosen theme mainly through texture, bright colours and expressive lines and shapes.
Since my theme mainly focused on static objects, I explored movement through the processes and materials I used.
For example, dripping ink, printing on the texture of hessian fabric, spreading paint with a feather, and using lively contrasting colours.
The piece of work I think was most succesful in this project was my starfish screen print.
I think the colours were vibrant and contrasted in a dynamic way, while the texture of the hessian fabric elevated the print itself. The material linked well to my theme as it looked like it had been washed up on the shore.
If I had six more weeks, I would like to have pushed my work further. I think I could have been more creative and ambitious with my own ideas. I also would re-arrange the order I did my three disciplines in.
I am proud of how much more confident and concise I was in explaining my work this semester.
Artists I looked at:
- J.M.W Turner
- Norman Ackroyd
- Meghann Riepenhoff
- Andy Warhol
- Aries Moross
- Susan Derges
- Everyday Practice design studio
- Brice Marden.

In this blog post, we’ll dive into various kitchen interior design trends and concepts that will inspire you to create a kitchen that’s uniquely yours.
Emphasizing Color and Texture for Interior Design for Kitchen
Colour plays a pivotal role in setting the mood and atmosphere of your kitchen. Consider experimenting with bold shades like navy blue, forest green, or warm terracotta tones to make a statement. Opt for neutral hues like white, grey, or soft pastels for a more subtle yet sophisticated look. Combine these colours with contrasting textures like matte surfaces, glossy finishes, and tactile materials like stone, wood, and metallics to create visual interest and depth.
Integrating Smart Storage Solutions for Interior Design for Kitchen
Maximizing storage capacity is vital when designing a functional kitchen. Utilize vertical space by installing wall shelves, hanging racks, and built-in cabinets. Integrate pull-outs, lazy Susans, and other clever organizational tools to keep your kitchen clutter-free and easy to navigate. Remember to incorporate hidden storage solutions, such as pop-up counters, foldaway tables, and lift-up sink covers, which can help free up valuable floor space.
Optimizing Natural Light and Airflow for Interior Design for Kitchen
Good lighting creates a bright, cheerful, and inviting kitchen atmosphere. Maximize natural light by incorporating large windows, skylights, or glass doors. Use task lighting, accent lighting, and general illumination to complement natural sources and create a well-lit workspace. Additionally, pay close attention to proper ventilation to prevent moisture accumulation and odour buildup. Install exhaust fans, open shelving, or a window above your cooking area to facilitate air circulation.
Blurring the Line Between Indoor and Outdoor Spaces for Interior Design for Kitchen
Bring the outdoors inside by integrating biophilic design elements into your kitchen. Add plants, herbs, and flowers to your countertop displays, backsplashes, and windowsills. Create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces using sliding glass walls, French doors, or large picture windows. These design choices will introduce freshness, tranquillity, and nature’s calming influence into your kitchen.
Combining Old World Charm with Contemporary Aesthetic for Interior Design for Kitchen
Infuse your kitchen with a sense of history and authenticity by incorporating vintage or antique elements alongside modern conveniences. Mix and match traditional cabinetry, hardware, and decorative details with sleek appliances, stainless steel surfaces, and streamlined layouts. This juxtaposition of old-world charm and contemporary aesthetics will result in a unique and memorable kitchen design that pays homage to the past while embracing the future.
Prioritizing Sustainability and Energy Efficiency for Interior Design for Kitchen
As responsible stewards of our planet, it’s imperative to prioritize sustainability and energy efficiency in our kitchen designs. Select eco-friendly materials like reclaimed wood, recycled glass, and renewable resources like bamboo or cork. Install low-energy LED lights, water-conserving faucets, and energy-star-certified appliances. Adopt composting methods, utilize rainwater harvesting techniques, and minimize food waste to reduce your carbon footprint further.
Creating Multifunctional Layouts for Interior Design for Kitchen
Consider designing a flexible and adaptable kitchen layout to accommodate changing needs and lifestyles. Include movable islands, adjustable shelving units, and multi-purpose furniture that can easily be repurposed or relocated. This versatile approach allows you to optimize your kitchen’s functionality according to your specific needs at any given time. In summary, there are countless ways to breathe new life into your kitchen through innovative interior design concepts. By focusing on colour and texture, intelligent storage solutions, optimal lighting, biophilia, historical influences, sustainability, and flexibility, you can create a beautiful and functional kitchen—a true testament to your love for good design and exceptional cuisine.
