OffQuest podcast episode 6.5:
Here are some interesting points and answers to fan questions on Emara by the creator, Fatma Elmheiri
(Note 1: any points that have been already mentioned  in the 2 other podcast episodes I’d written about are not mentioned again here)
(Note 2: the interviewer states that some elements cannot be spoken about at the moment, based on Eating Star’s request for privacy. On topics like budgeting, etc)
(Note 3: questions that are too close to spoilers had to be left unanswered for the time being)
Unless she’s joking, Fatma confirms that the masked guy is indeed Soleiman
“Were you expecting Emara to be that well-liked?” “No, I didn’t, but my team had a lot more faith in the final product than I did.”
She’s surprised the English dub of Emara got much more views
According to YouTube’s stats, the biggest number of viewers is from the United States (around 25%), followed closely by Saudi Arabia (around 23%), then followed by Emirates, then South America, but Fatma cannot clearly remember which country had the most viewers there
Good news: a couple companies did get in contact with Eating Stars to talk about sponsoring the show or even co-producing, but nothing has been decided yet
She assures people that she and the studio follow the Emara hashtag on twitter, and that educated, constructive criticism is welcome. Criticizing for the sake of being rude is not cool and not welcome
“Is this particular story of Emara’s technically over, with episode 5?” “No, of course it isn’t! We didn’t answer anything, how can it be over?”“True, we only have more questions now.” Interviewer then goes on to list ALL the questions the fandom hasXD
“Is the end/conclusion of Emara already written down?” “Yep, has been for a while, actually.”
Kudos to the fans who noticed the Evangelion references
Fatma seems to be in burnout mode atm. She wants to get back into Emara but not right away. She also has other ideas she wants to work on in the future She’s in no hurry to throw herself back into the hectic life of producing (She wore several hats and did several jobs during the making of Emara so it was VERY draining)
Fatma is actually considering something of a spin-off mini story for Dhabian, to the interviewer’s delight
A potential future comic would be to further explore the world of Emara and for fun side stories, NOT to move the main story forward. Main story will exclusively be in the cartoon only
She didn’t think Dhabian would be so popular, so as episode 5 loomed she grew more anxious of people’s reactions.  She didn’t expect him to be popular especially since she had a lot of difficulty writing him and defining his character. Interviewer thinks that’s weird, because Dhabian is easily the character that raises the most questions and thus is the most interesting story-wise
Fatma prefers Zeina and Jassim to Dhabian
Now onto some answers to spoiler-free questions from Twitter:
“Will there be something similar to a crossover with other superhero cartoons?” “Not sure, but there are definitely other superheroes in Emara’s specific world; Saudian, Palestinian, Yemeni and Kuwaiti superheroes.” “Really? What are their genders?” “The Saudian and Palestinian are girls, the Yemeni and Kuwaiti are boys. And the Saudian character is Jeddan, specifically. They have the coolest accent.”
“Is the absence of a romantic subplot intentional in Emara?”“Yes, it is. I hate romantic subplots. Furthermore, Emara as a character doesn’t look for it.”
“Will there be a comic book for Emara?”“Possibly, and we do have an Art of Emara book in the works.”
“Is Moza a STEM or technical student?”“No, she didn’t go to college.”“Oh, then just high school?”“No, she dropped out of high school.”
“What’s one of the most challenging things you faced while in production?”“Nothing goes according to your first plan.”
One question goes, “So uh, can I marry Sultan?” “Why not, but you gotta get his mother’s blessing first.”
“Which character is the most fun to write?”“Emara is, because she’s gullible and that allows you to get away with a lot of things. Jassim’s also fun, so is Ali! It’s good to write a person who’s angry, allows me to release my own anger. Pretty much every character was more entertaining to write than Dhabian!” “That is too weird. Maybe it’s because he was hard to write that you didn’t have fun doing it?”“Yes, that’s probably it.”
Fatma intentionally made it so that Sultan never uses his legs except when he’s actively doing superhero stuff, because she wanted to show that he could still be a competent and effective person even without them in civilian life. There’s more to it, but that’s spoiler territory
“Emara’s videogame preferences: combat games like Streetfighter. Sultan’s preferences: RPGs like Pokemon and Harvest Moon. He loves Pokemon, but he’s the trainer who’ll always sneak around other trainers to avoid a fight. He prefers just raising the Pokemon.”
“Emara’s a pickier eater than Sultan. Sultan eats anything.”
“Please support us by telling your friends about Emara, and seeing and sharing the eps on our YouTube channel! The exposure will help us in the future. Please don’t support re-uploads of Emara’s eps.”

Superheroes of Arabia Podcast: J.M.DeMatteis Interview
youtube
I grew up reading his work in the 80s and 90s. He dared to take on obscure or B-list characters and made them an instant hit at DC Comics. He took A-list characters at both DC and Marvel Comics to new heights through his unique storytelling style. True story: He brought me and John Romita Sr. to tears with one of his stories
Now, he is the creator of The DeMultiverse consisting of 4 new comics co-created by artists Tom Mandrake, Shawn McManus, Matthew Dow Smith & David Baldeón. Superhero, fantasy, Western & more! Published by Spellbound Comics

Thank You, Peter Cullen, from Saudi Arabia
Tumblr media
On December 17, voice actor Peter Cullen received Life Time Achievement Award from the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) for his contributions towards character development through voice acting
He is a legend for every Transformers fan out there (including me and many like me in Saudi Arabia) for being the voice of Optimus Prime. He has been the voice of the Autobot leader since the time when Hasbro partnered with Marvel to produce Transformers content in the form of comics and animated series (with Sunbow Productions)
Transformers' Saudi fandom first came across their content in 1989 as a VHS 📼 (sold by Almansour Video). The title of it was:
Tumblr media
This was a pivotal moment. Not only were the kids introduced to one of Hasbro's most successful franchises but they would also learn that sometimes, even the good guys end up dead in their quest for justice and freedom. The scenes of Optimus Prime's death in this feature shook the kids down to the core. I still get teary-eyed when I see Prime on his deathbed saying:
"Do not grieve. Soon...I will be one with the Matrix"
Tumblr media
This scene and the dialogues within, the conveying of emotions by Peter Cullen made the kids fans of Optimus for decades to come. But this wasn't the first time kids in Saudi Arabia came across Cullen's work
In 1979, a Hanna Barbera animated series slowly made its way to Saudi TV around 1982 and continued till '85. The series was Mighty Man and Yukk, a story of a superhero and his ugly dog (weird plot, I know) and in it, Peter Cullen and his long-time colleague, as well as friend Frank Welker, were the main voice actors with Cullen being Mighty Man while Welker being Yukk. Suffice it to say that it was one of the most popular animated series in the country but we never paid attention to credits since we were mostly school-going kids in KG or Primary at max
youtube
But what it did was introduce us to Cullen's voice acting before we actually came to know his name later in life
While today's generation of Millenials to Gen Z might know him from the latest Transformers productions in Hollywood, on Netflix, or video games, we the 80s fandom will always remember Peter Cullen for Mighty Man and Transformers, even though his body of work goes back to Sonny and Cher show and covers even children's features like Winnie the Pooh in which he voiced Eeyore
I hope one day we get to host him in Jeddah
FUN FACT: Peter Cullen is also the voice behind Ironhide in the Transformers G1 animated series

Comic Verse: Saudi Arabia’s First Comic Book Store is a MUST Visit
Tumblr media
(Read all the way to the end to watch the vlog and podcast episode with the store’s owner)
In the summer of 2022 came the news that the geek community of Saudi Arabia would be getting its first comic book store but with the prevailing mentality in the business community, people didn’t know what to expect
The store started with an impressive opening, bringing all the major titles, imprints, and indies for the readers in the country. However, comic book stores are best experienced through in-person visits and that’s what happened to me
Two weeks ago I was invited to attend a collectors' gathering hosted at Comic Verse store in Riyadh. The organizers were kind enough to arrange for my trip. The gathering was on a Friday, and it brought together collectors mostly from Riyadh with only me being the exception (being a representative of Jeddah and someone who collected comics and vintage action figures)
As soon as I entered, I realized that this place besides being a historical landmark (due to being the country’s first comics store) was also a haven for the community. Shelves were adorned with statues and posters but the biggest display belonged to the collected editions (hardcovers and paperbacks), weekly comics stacks, and boxes full of back issues. The collection wasn’t only DC and Marvel, the store has it all. Being a comic book reader myself and having visited stores in Orlando, San Francisco, London, and Dubai; this store has really outdone our expectations
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Obviously, I had to make a vlog about it but I also needed to know what inspired its owner to invest in such a niche venture, especially in a market that mostly prefers to invest in real estate, general contracting services, general retail, or e-commerce
He was kind enough to sit down with me at his store and talk about his journey. What really impressed me about him was the fact that he was not driven by profits or sales but rather by the community’s needs when it came to comic book reading. Furthermore, if anyone would ask about a particular story or any arc or any collected edition, he would have it. And there were more, collectible action figures from DC Universe, Marvel Legends, Marvel Select, and Star Wars. What more could a geek want?

Interview of Roy Schwartz, Author of ‘Is Superman Circumcised?’
youtube
Superman, The Man of Steel, is 80 years old. We all know Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster created him. We also know that both were Jewish nerdy teenagers but do we know who inspired them or what transpired behind the scenes that led to the greatest creation in comics?
Roy Schwartz is the author of 'Is Superman Circumcized? The Complete Jewish History of the World’s Greatest Hero' who has explored the circumstances in great detail as well as the role Abrahamic religions have played in introducing a different concept of Superheroism to the world since the late 30s. His article was recently published on CNN in which he talks about Jack Kirby and his creation Eternals
I recently got the chance to interview Roy for Superheroes of Arabia #podcast in which I ask him about his first encounter with a superhero character and what made him fall in love with superhero comics
