But I propose the better version of that plot line:

Sirius sends James to get Reg back, James realises that he actually cares about Reg and starts getting more motivated to find him

meanwhile Reg is falling head over heels for the madwoman that kidnapped him from his bedroom while also trying and failing to get along with First Mate Marlene and the rest of the crew

Reg eventually realises he misses James and freaks tf out bc it's supposed to be a political marriage and nothing else but Lily is just like 'this guy must be pretty impressive if he's got you interested'

She gets curious and lures James into a trap and then goes 'okay I see the appeal'

And then jegulily happens

Jegulily au where James goes on holiday to France to get a break from life after losing his job and ends up falling in love with the hot couple who own the local cafe

At the end of his holiday, they invite him to stay and help them run the cafe; he wants to agree but says he has a life at home that he can't just abandon so they exchange numbers and he goes home but can't stop thinking about the two of them so eventually he tells everyone that while he was away he met two people and they made him happy and offered him a place and he really thinks he wants to go back to them

Obviously everyone supports him and he texts to see if their offer is still open, they say ofc, and he immediately starts booking the ferry. After a few months, his friends all decide to come over to see how he's settled in and so they can meet his partners and then you've got the black brothers angst as Sirius realises James' new boyfriend is the brother he hadn't seen in 12 years

Poor Lily is on mediator duty with the help of Dorcas and Pete

James is just panicking the entire time

Sirius finding out that Reg and Lily met soon after Sirius left and being eternally grateful that she was able to save him and give him happiness

I just need Regulily being the most functional married couple to ever exist and everyone finding them absolutely adorable

They both immediately tell each other that they're interested in James and start working together to seduce him

Thinking about James going with Lily and Reg to study in the library knowing he can fall asleep on one of their shoulders and they'll sit there and just let him rest until he wakes up.

Esp if he has trouble sleeping normally but he feels so safe around them that he just relaxed completely
