(via Vending machine error reveals secret face image database of college students | Ars Technica)
Canada-based University of Waterloo is racing to remove M&M-branded smart vending machines from campus after outraged students discovered the machines were covertly collecting facial-recognition data without their consent.
The scandal started when a student using the alias SquidKid47 posted an image on Reddit showing a campus vending machine error message, "Invenda.Vending.FacialRecognitionApp.exe," displayed after the machine failed to launch a facial recognition application that nobody expected to be part of the process of using a vending machine.
"Hey, so why do the stupid M&M machines have facial recognition?" SquidKid47 pondered.
The Reddit post sparked an investigation from a fourth-year student named River Stanley, who was writing for a university publication called MathNEWS.
Stanley sounded alarm after consulting Invenda sales brochures that promised "the machines are capable of sending estimated ages and genders" of every person who used the machines without ever requesting consent.
This frustrated Stanley, who discovered that Canada's privacy commissioner had years ago investigated a shopping mall operator called Cadillac Fairview after discovering some of the malls' informational kiosks were secretly "using facial recognition software on unsuspecting patrons."
Only because of that official investigation did Canadians learn that "over 5 million nonconsenting Canadians" were scanned into Cadillac Fairview's database, Stanley reported. Where Cadillac Fairview was ultimately forced to delete the entire database, Stanley wrote that consequences for collecting similarly sensitive facial recognition data without consent for Invenda clients like Mars remain unclear.
Stanley's report ended with a call for students to demand that the university "bar facial recognition vending machines from campus."

UH tennis phenom Ilagan heads into senior season with unfinished business

When I was a kid, I just sort of assumed all teachers had some kind of teacher magic that let them remember a mind boggling amount of people. They always seemed to know every student on sight.
Now as an adult, watching my coworkers consistently recognize 50-80% of repeat customers vs my dozen or so, if you count the ones I recognize but consistently conflate with another customer, I think maybe my face blindness should have been more apparent to me sooner

So Milan van Waardenburg who played Jean Valjean during the Dutch/Flemish 2023/first week of 2024 Les Mis tour and is currently playing Valjean on the West End just posted his top 3 from the Eurovision Song Context second semi final. Which on it's own is already fucking shit. Guess he somehow missed the boycott memo, but guess what his number one is..
Fucking Israel. Israel!
I'm genuinely so pissed and disappointed I don't even have the words to describe this all oh my god.

Therefore, I read not to recall the exact details, but to be able to recognize just enough that if I need to refer to something again, I can pull it up from my database and reread it.

idk which school/hospital/library/corporate office needs to hear this but your bathroom facilities need to have doors that lock and toilets and sinks that consistently work and soap and towel dispensers that are consistently stocked and floors with undamaged tile that people can safely walk or roll a wheelchair over and there need to be grab rails and hooks for basic accessibility functions and there needs to be a gender-neutral bathroom that people can access without requesting a key or climbing seven flights of stairs with no elevator and there needs to be a safe place for women who cannot undress in the same room as a man to change and there need to be sanitary bins for disposing of menstrual supplies and there needs to not be broken glass just left on the floor for weeks at a time literally ever and yes, all of this costs money, but it is actually a good use of funds to make sure people can physically be in the building where your organization is located without compromising their health or safety or dignity. institutional recognition of the needs of the human body or i kill you!!

'bad girls' by MIA got ruined for me the day me and my friend were studying for our economics exams and she was trying to explain keynesian economics and how it's all about benefit in the short-run and boosting consumer demand and the way she explained that to me - with the completely deadpan expression of a teenage girl who has been in the library since 5am and had a redbull for breakfast - was by describing it as 'live fast die young bad girls do it well'
