Six degrees of separation
Ethan x Sophie Grey
Tumblr media
First, you think the worst is a broken heart.
Ethan’s heart contracted in his chest as he gritted his teeth to stop himself from chasing after Sophie as he watched her walk away from him in the beer garden. He reminded himself that this was for the best. This was what was best for her...but it still hurt him to push her away, to make her think that he didn’t care for her that way anymore especially after he had just ran away to the amazon.
What’s gonna kill you is the second part.
Her hand lingered against his, and he allowed himself to indulge for a moment, stroking his thumb against her soft skin. He stared down at their hands wanting both to pull her closer and kiss her and a small part of him wanted to pull away to keep her safe.
“Sophie...”
“I know” she replied in a whisper.
Ethan let the moment linger, knowing that it would have to end soon, that ache in his chest returned as he let his eyes meet her hazel ones, he could see the emotions swirling around, the comfort from the touch, the desire and a little bit of hurt.
“We’ll be okay. We’ll make it work”
“Yeah”
Her eyes moved from his down to their hands where he was still stroking her own ever so slightly, not daring to do more. The broken word made his heart break more than it was. He was about to comfort her again when the doors opened and Baz strolled in, making the pair bolt up from their chairs, pulling apart.
“Whoops! Forgot my pager! That could’ve been very bad!” the other doctor said cheerly, not realising the moment he was unintentionally interrupting.
“Hrm. Yes. It’s right over there on the table” Ethan managed to get out evenly as he spotted the device on the wooden surface.
As Baz retrieved his pager and exited the office, Sophie headed towards the door as well, turning back with a longing look. Ethan found himself gazing back but remained silent, urging himself not to follow after her one more.
And the third, is when your world splits down the middle.
Ethan was furious.
Furious with her and at himself. After a rather surprising visit from a young woman named Gwyneth Monroe insisting they were hired he had learned that Sophie was behind the idea and that made the board very happy. He was angry that she had gone behind his back especially after he told her no. He pinched the bridge of his nose, jaw tight with anger.
He looked up and spotted the young diagnostician heading down the corridor towards him. Her long red hair was worn in loose waves that framed her face. Her hazel eyes were filled with worry that Ethan could see from here. But all he could focus on was the fact she had gone behind his back.
“...Rookie. Do you have anything to say for yourself?” he asked her.
“...About?”
Ethan guided her around the corner and pointed through the window of the diagnostic’s teams’s patient room.
“About this!"
He watched her expression as she took in the scene before them, the chaos of the room, then he noted the realization dawn across her face as she turned her head to look at him. Sophie pulled her bottom lip between her teeth unconsciously as she frowned.
“Dr Ramsey, I don’t-”
“Save it. We’ll talk about this later. Right now, we’ve to work to do” he cut her off.
He was angry but he reminded himself that she had only done what she thought was best for the hospital and for the young patient.
Fourth, you’re gonna think that you fixed yourself.
The rain patter against the windscreen if his otherwise silent car. He took a steady breath as he wondered what was going on in the shop with Sophie and his estranged mother.
Ethan gave a small chuckle, only she could convince him to spy on his own mother who had abandoned him for far too long. She was also the only one to make him consider things he never would have before. The car door opened making him jump slightly.
"Jesus" he said alarmed as Sophie climbed in and shut the door behind her.
"You didn't see me coming?" Sophie asked, her hair damp from the rain.
"I can't see anything in all this rain" he told me. "...How did it go?"
"Ethan, she...told me she was proud of her son"
"You spoke to her?" he asked surprised.
"Yeah, for a minute. She saw my I.D. badge and told me her son was a doctor, too" Sophiebsaid. "She said she was more proud of him than he'd ever know"
Ethan stared straight ahead, refusing to betray any emotion.
"I...hrm...I see" he said after a moment. "We should get back to the hospital"
He turned the engine back on, the headlights cutting twin paths through the rain.
"Thanks for making me do this, Sophie. I think I needed it" he told her softly.
"You're welcome, Ethan" she smiled at him.
Ethan's hand found her, fingers tenderly laced through her smaller ones. His heart beated a little faster as they exchanged a shy smile. Ethan held her hand tight all the way back to Edenbrook.
Fifth, you see them out with someone else.
Edenbrook had won the softball game, all thanks to Sophie. Ethan watched as she paraded around the field a bright smile on her face which made him feel warm.
He watched as her friends and roommates ran over to her and excitedly pulled her into a group hug. The corners of his lips turned up slightly for a moment. He was just about to approach her when the scalpel jockey slid his arm around her.
What was worse, Sophie allowed his arm to remain there and even leaned her head onto his shoulder putting a small delicate hand to his chest as she spoke to her friends.
Ethan felt his heart contract in his chest, much similar to when he had pushed her away many times.
This was his own fault, he scolded himself. He pushed her away so much that she had given up on whatever was between them.
And the sixth, is when you admit that you may have fucked up a little.
His heart thundered in his chest, a million thoughts raced around his mind which he had no control over.
He could lose her.
Ethan listened in silence as she told him how she regretted not loving more.
"Since we're sharing regrets, do you mind if I share one of mine?" he questioned.
"Go ahead"
Ethan's gloved hand found Sophie's one, he couldn't feel her skin like he usually did, he missed the feeling of her soft skin beneath his.
"I wish I hadn't asked you to stay away" he said softly.
"You do?" Sophie asked sounding surprised.
"We've wasted so much time. I've wasted so much time. I should have held you in my arms every day and told you how much I..." he hesitated for just a moment.
"How much I care about you"
How much I love you. He really wanted to say, but he realised that if he said those words- he'd be giving up, he'd be admitting she was as good as dead.
"Ethan, I've always thought we should be together" Sophie admitted bringing him back.
"You have?" he smiled.
"Kind of thought it was obvious, actually"
"I'd hate to presume anything. Though... that feeling was very definitively mutual"
Ethan held her hand tightly, the smile not leaving his face. He felt so happy, yet so sad at the same time.
"I wish I could kiss you" Sophie said into the quiet room.
"Soon. You will soon" Ethan told her, his smile dropping. Their happiness faded almost as quickly as it came.
"Sophie? What's wrong?"
"It just hit me that Rafael might be the last real human contact I ever get to have, not through plastic" she sighed.
Ethan joined her on the bed, his bulky arms encircling her attempting to comfort both of them.
"Look at me" he ordered her softly.
Sophie looked at him through his helmet, her hazel eyes sparkled with unshed tears. Ethan's heart squeezed at the sight.
"You can't think like that. You can't give up"
"But I can, kiss you...sort of"
Sophie took his gloved hand and pressed her lips to it. He turned it over, cupping her chin. Sophie could just feel the pressure of his thumb stroking her cheek through the suit.
"Sophie..."
They laid together with their eyes locked until, at last, Sophie felt sleep cloud the edges of her mind. Sophie sighed and snuggled closer into Ethan's arms.
"I'm glad I at least got to hold you one last time..." Sophie mumbled softly.
"This isn't the last time, Sophie. I promise you that" he told her.
He was sure of that. He couldn't think of it in the otherwise, because if he did it killed him. One piece at a time.
Thank you for reading this! It's not the greatest thing ever written but I enjoyed trying to piece this together 💜

I need something to do. I've lost my passions. Apathy towards everything. Lately, I'll put my earphones in, turn the music up, and just scroll for hours, all the while feeling shitty inside. I lost myself, somewhere, somehow. And I don't know how to get back.
This past week I tried to do some sport. And I did. On Wednesday I did some exercise following an app, and on Thursday I went for a run first thing in the morning. And it felt great. I somehow had energy afterwards. But still nothing to do really. So it was wasted. And of course, the next day the muscle aches hit and you regret ever going out in the first place.
I'm always hungry because I'm bored. And I go to the kitchen and think, I want to eat, but I also want to loose the quarantine weight so I tell myself I shouldn't. But after the third visit to the kitchen, I give in. And then I feel bad about it. Plus this summer heat is killing me. So done with it tbh. But still a good two months more of it, basically. No seaside or pool, I might add.
I'm just finding it very hard to not be negative. But that seems to be my personality. A pessimist about everything and anything. Except maybe when I'm trying to cheer someone else up, or in those brief moments of positive thinking that last a few hours and then get crushed...
A mutual asked me on here recently what I meant by "mental mess" in my header. Well, friend, this is what I mean.
Add to the mix my current life stage and you have the cherry on the top. I failed to finish university this term, which means I have to pay more money to get those 6 credits I'm lacking in order to graduate. The actual graduation ceremony has been cancelled in the end because of coronavirus. I'm currently living at my parents house, which is never easy. And it's so stressful. It's never easy to move back home once you've become accustomed to your own way of doing things. There's also just so much tension in this house. It's exhausting.
Also, I'm stressed because I hardly have any savings left, and I hate the idea of having to rely on my parents if I want to move out. I'm trying to get a TEFL qualification so I can teach English and hopefully get a job that allows me to live and work away from here. And that in itself says a lot. Because I'd always said teaching English would be the last thing I'd ever do. But I guess I've basically found myself with no other viable option right now. And who knows, maybe it won't be so bad. Idk. But anyway, I need to finish it before I can start sending CVs out. Besides, I have no place to go back to. I left my apartment when I moved back here. And the flatmates I had are also gone. So it's basically starting from zero. I'm just so sad that my university days are practically over and the real world sucks balls. Why does growing up have to be like this? Can we fast forward to when I have my life together and feel content with my surrounding circumstances? I'm not even asking to be fully happy. Just enough to be okay. Contentment is the only way to get through this hell. Happiness is an illusion. We can experience happy moments, but it's not possible to live 100% happy every second of everyday. Not in this world. At least, that's how I see it right now...
I'm both dreading and looking forward to a wedding I have in a few weeks. One of my best friends from uni is getting married to her longtime boyfriend. A super cute couple. I'm so jealous of her. She seems to have her life all figured out. Her boyfriend has a good job in Germany, and after the wedding they're both moving over there. She has a job waiting for her too. And they already have a cute little apartment. Give it a few years and they'll have their beautiful children, etc, etc.
The wedding is both a celebration, but also a goodbye. And not just of the happy couple. I know most of the other invitees. They're also good friends of mine. And this wedding is probably the last time I'm gonna see any of them for a long time. And that makes me so sad. But at the same time, I'm so excited to get out of here and celebrate with my friends for a few hours. For a few hours I can forget my worries and just live again. Plus, I plan on downloading some of this mental shit to them. Long overdue. It'll be interesting to hear their perspectives. And to be honest, I just want someone to empathize with how I feel. My parents don't get it. Neither does my brother. And that just adds to the whole mess.
On another note, I'm also kinda low-key worried about Covid-19 at the wedding. My friend has told me they're doing their very best to ensure the recommended distances are kept between people, chairs and tables at all time. Masks will be compulsory and there will be hand sanitizer everywhere. So it should be fine. But still, it does make me a little nervous to go out and be around so many people.
Anyway, enough ramblings for one day. Thanks for reading, if you made it all the way...

------------------------‐----------------------
Taehyung knew that he was coming down with something for days. He had all the telltale signs: sore throat, stuffy nose, headaches. But, being the stubborn boy that he is, he, of course, wouldn't admit defeat.
Granted, this probably wasn't the best course of action, because a week later, on the day of a photoshoot, all of his previous symptoms had multiplied tenfold. He couldn't breathe through his nose at all, his throat felt like there were knives being stabbed through it, and his head was practically pounding. Not to mention that he'd been sneezing and coughing all morning.
Fortunately for Taehyung, the photoshoot was set for some kind of floral scene. This was a good thing, because it gave Taehyung an excuse for his constant sneezing: allergies.
************************************************
Jungkook was nervous. He normally did really well with photoshoots but he was doing a lot of floral shots today and worse he knew a lot of the shots would be hard on his hyungs, as a lot of them had allergies to pollen. Especially... Taehyung.
The younger man felt strangely protective of his hyung and hated seeing him uncomfortable. He had decided, as he took his own allergy pill today, that he should bring the bottle with him. ...Just in case.
He shook his hands and hopped a few times to get rid of his nerves, before joining the others.
************************************************
Taehyung was mainly standing off to the side as he waited to be given instructions, just looking down at his hands and playing with his fingers. He was sort of worried his allergies WOULD act up, but assured himself that his nose was too blocked to be irritated by anything.
Well, anything but his cold. And that proved to be true moments later when he turned and let out a soft, sickly sneeze into cupped hands. "Heh'KITSHHuh!"
************************************************
Jungkook heard the photographer call his name. Distractedly, he looked through and around the staff and crew milling around the set. The scene was similar to an old Victorian style garden, complete with hanging trellises of real hanging flowers and potted trees. He tried not to rub his nose and wreck his makeup as the heady smell filled it. This would be a long and difficult process.
Standing on his tiptoes, he spotted Suga-hyung and Hobi-hyung with the hair and makeup noonas. Rapmon-hyung was talking with a manager off to one side. He couldn't see...
"Jeon Jungkook-ssi!" The photographer called again, sounding annoyed. Jungkook blushed slightly, embarrassed and bowed an apology before taking his place on a bench beneath a blooming Forsythia bush.
He was supposed to look into the glassy eye of the lens like it was ARMY and he was inviting them to come and spend a "refreshing" time with him in this garden. Jungkook wasn't really sure of what the director meant by refreshing... it made him think about a commercial for soft drinks.
He gazed longingly at the camera and reset himself into a standing position cupping a wisteria blossom in his hand. The strong scent made his sensitive nose twitch, but he just sniffled, trying to will the tickly feeling away.
Looking at the blossom now, he posed again, like he was caring for the plant.
"Now," said the photographer, " I want you to smell the flower and turn to me slowly and smile."
Jungkook swallowed reflexively. Oh, god... He obeyed, bringing the purple flower closer to his face and closing his eyes. He inhaled and managed to turn before he felt the tickle flare up in his nose. Against his will, his mouth dropped open slightly and he froze, caught in limbo, before the feeling faded away to nothing. He sniffled, feeling his nose start to run. He apologized and reset, completing the turn and smiling sweetly.
The photographer was satisfied but reminded him of the group shots that would happen after all the individual members shoots were finished. Jungkook nodded and trotted off set to wipe his nose.
He grabbed a tissue packet off of the makeup noona's cart and went a little ways off to the side to subtly blow his nose. He fought with the tiny pull tab on the packet for a moment before freeing a tissue and pressing it to his nose, jamming the rest into his pocket. He looked up and saw Taehyung ahead of him.
The older man looked tired, even under his makeup. He must not have slept well. Suddenly, the slighter man turned and released a relatively quiet sneeze. Ah, Hyung's allergies must be giving him hell already. But usually Taehyung sneezed openly and loud enough to scare bystanders.  Jungkook scratched his head in confusion, a habit from his younger years that he'd never really outgrown, before going up to the other vocalist and asking, a bit shyly,
"Hyung, are your allergies bothering you? I brought extra allergy pills, if you want one?"
*************************************************
Taehyung turned to Jungkook with a small hum and managed a smile. "Ah, thank you, Kook-ah, but I'm alright." He sniffled thickly. "I took a pill at home. If my allergies get worse I might take you up on your offer though."
He sniffed again and sighed, desperately wanting to rub his eyes or his nose, but he didn't want to ruin the careful makeup noona's work. She'd spent enough time already trying to cover his red, puffy eyes and pink tinted nose.
*************************************************
Jungkook frowned, but nodded, his eyes not leaving his hyung's face. His concern made his shyness lessen and he was not as self-conscious as he was around Taehyung normally.
He admired the singer's beautiful soulful voice and his acting skills. More than anything, he wanted to be able to learn from his hyung and to be as good as he was.
Since the older man had turned down the allergy medication, Jungkook decided to let the matter drop... but V's deep eyes looked so tired, he seemed drained almost.
"Did you sleep okay?" He asked in what he hoped was a casual way, "You seem tired."
Ugh, he sounded pathetic and like he was trying to baby his hyung. Why couldn't he have Rapmon-hyung's way with words?
Suddenly, he felt his nose start to drip again. He pulled a tissue free and wiped at it, looking away and blushing slightly.
************************************************
"I slept fine..." He lied quietly. He eyed Jungkook with a small smirk. "Looks like your allergies are bothering you too." He said with a small laugh, rubbing the younger's back. "Do the flowers smell strong?" He asked, genuinely worried. For both himself and Jungkook. His nose was sensitive enough without having a cold. Maybe his blocked nose wouldn't protect him after all…
************************************************
Jungkook sniffled into the tissue and nodded.
"You know how I get with flowers and perfume, hyung... I get this tickle and feel like I'm going to sneeze, but..." he blushed again, remembering his embarrassing moments from earlier, and trailed off.
Jungkook suddenly realized his still had the tissue packet and smiled. He could help his hyung at least a little. He pressed the rest of the pack into Taehyung's hands gently. He looked down and said softly,
"Just in case... you might need them. They can always redo part of your makeup. I think they get paid by the hour." He smiled at his small joke and looked at Tae, his dark eyes shining.
*************************************************
Taehyung let out a small laugh and nodded. Bad move. It aggravated the back of his throat and forced out wracking, harsh coughs from him. He turned away from Jungkook to protect the younger from his germs and bent over at the waist from how strong the coughs were.
************************************************
Jungkook jumped slightly. This was not normal for Taehyung at all. He immediately wrapped his arm around Taehyung to steady him and rubbed small circles into his back.
"Hyung! Come on, let's go sit down for a minute." The youngest member swallowed down the panic he felt building inside his chest. This was not okay.
*************************************************
Taehyung sighed and complied, sitting down on a chair nearby. Well, it was closer to collapsing into it.
He ran a hand through his hair and tried not to focus on how dizzy he was.
************************************************
Jungkook knelt down in front of Tae and looked at him, worry and dismay filling his big eyes.
He reached up to gently touch his palm to Taehyung's cheek, but stopped himself part way there.
"I don't think this is just allergies, hyung. You sound sick..." He hesitated and then said, " I should go get Rapmon-hyung. He can get them to let you go home."
*************************************************
"No no no!" He said immediately. "It's fine. I'm fine..." He said softly.
*************************************************
Jungkook took his hyung's hand gently, his sympathetic eyes pleading,
" Hyung, look at me... please?"
*************************************************
Taehyung slowly looked up at Jungkook with tired eyes as he chewed on his lip and held back a sniffle.
*************************************************
"You have to tell me... if you are sick, or anything... please, I... it hurts watching you put yourself through this." Jungkook shook his head to clear his runaway thoughts, " I mean... I just want you to tell me honestly if you start feeling worse." He sighed and released Taehyung's hand from his own trembling one. "I won't say anything but I am going to get you some water at least."
************************************************
Taehyung sighed and thanked him quietly, watching the younger walk off. He ran a hand through his hair again and bit back a groan when his name was called.
He went over to the bench and put on a smile, waiting for instruction. The photographer told him to take one of the flowers in his hand and 'invite ARMY to come with you.' Taehyung wasn't all too sure what that meant, but one of his instructions was to smell the flower. He could already tell that this would be bad.
He took a deep breath, heard that the camera's were rolling, put on a smile, and sniffed the flower. As Jungkook had said, the flower had a strong, unbearable scent, and his sensitive nose immediately decided it didn't like it.
He whimpered and raised a finger, as if to say, 'wait a minute,' and clamped a hand over his mouth as he pitched forward with a few rapid fire sneezes. "Heh'kitshh! Ishh! Ehh'itshhu! Hah'ishhuh!" He blushed and apologized profusely.
************************************************
Jungkook was on his way back with a water bottle, worrying about what he should do about Taehyung. The older man seemed really sick, but didn't want to think that his hyung would lie to him. That thought made his heart feel like it was being squeezed by a vice. His heart dropped into his stomach as he returned to the chair he had left the older man in and found it empty.
"Oh, no!"
He sprinted over to the set, just in time to watch as Taehyung lifted the flower to his face and inhaled. He watched Taehyung's face fall into his hand as he sneezed and Jungkook felt his face flush with anger and frustration at himself, at the photographer, and even the flowers. His hands became fists at his sides.
"Damn it!"
He started forward, and struggling to compose himself, interrupted the photographer with much apologizing and went to Taehyung's side. He blocked the older vocalist from the crew and staff's sight and under the pretext of giving him water, asked in a whisper,
"Are you sure you can keep going?"
************************************************
Taehyung sniffled thickly and pressed the heels of his hands to his eyes with a sigh.
"Yeah, yeah, I'll be finde..." His voice was laced with heavy congestion by then.
"Dond't worry about mbe..." He offered what he hoped was a small, reassuring smile.
*************************************************
Jungkook sighed, his shoulders slumping.
"Okay... I... guess that's okay then..." He felt so uneasy. What was this feeling in his chest? Kookie walked off set and stood off to one side, watching nervously as the shoot continued.
God, he was being ridiculous... This was Taehyung. His video game partner and his singing partner. Why did he feel so sure that Taehyung was hiding how bad things were from him?
And why did that thought bother him so much?...
************************************************
Taehyung sniffled one last time and turned back to the photographer, apologizing once more. "I-It's just allergies..." He excused.
After a few more tries of the shot (with excessive sneezing, of course), Taehyung's nose was now officially too blocked to smell anything. So he managed to smell the flower, turn to the camera, smile, and wave 'ARMY' over.
The words, "Okay, you're done! Remember the group shots later," had never felt so gratifying or relieving to Taehyung. He practically jumped off the bench, gave a hurried thanks and rushed off to go be miserable in peace.
************************************************
Jungkook followed as Taehyung left the awful pollen-ridden set. He kept a distance from the older man, trying to see some hidden clue that would help him to make this horrible photoshoot better or easier for Taehyung.
Jungkook wished, not for the first time that day, that he could just take the suffering man home and get him to shower to remove the pollen. Then he'd put on a movie Tae loved and let him rest. He thought about how it would feel to have Taehyung propped up against his chest just watching tv or a movie together. He smiled and shook his head. They were close but Taehyung wouldn't be okay with something like that... would he?
He shook himself out of his wonderings and slowed, watching Taehyung with curious eyes.
************************************************
Taehyung leaned against a wall and blew out a breath. He closed his eyes with a grimace and breathed through his mouth to combat the dizziness he was feeling from what he supposed was a fever, judging by how cold he felt.
A fierce, familiar tickle burned in his nose, and he scrambled for the tissue packet Jungkook had given him earlier. Breath hitching, he fumbled with the tab, pulled out a tissue, and held it to his mouth and nose as he shook with two desperate sneezes. "Heh'TSHHuh! Hah'ITSHHoo!" His breath continued to hitch for a few torturous, tickly moments, before he let a last, incredibly unsatisfying sneeze. "Heh'kitshhuh!"
He groaned and rubbed his face, not caring anymore that he was ruining the makeup. He felt awful. He just wanted to go home.
************************************************
Jungkook watched miserably as Taehyung snuffled and sneezed explosively into the tissue. He saw as Taehyung rubbed at his face how much paler he was than the makeup had lead him to believe. Now he was sure, Taehyung really was sick!
He approached cautiously and called out,
"Taehyung, it's just me."
***********************************************
Taehyung turned to him and sighed.
"H-Hey..." He blew his nose, which sounded as awful and congested as it felt. He winced and kept the tissue in his hand, knowing he'd probably need it in the near future.
He coughed lightly and sighed again, rubbing his eyes.
*************************************************
"You sound really bad, Hyung." He reached out and cupped Taehyung's cheek gently, before drawing back in amazement and worry, "You are really warm. I think you have a fever. We need to get you home so you can get the pollen off of you and you can rest." He paced, thinking hard.
"I could tell them that I'm sick, and that you are taking me back home early. That is, if you really don't want to tell the others."
*************************************************
Taehyung bit his lip, feeling tears well up in his eyes. It was probably the fever messing with his emotions, but he just felt so grateful that Jungkook was doing so much to hep. And guilty, because he didn't deserve this much attention and love just because he was sick.
"I-I'll just tell themb I'mb ndot feelig well..." He mumbled congestedly. "You dond't have to lie."
*************************************************
"Hyung... oh, Tae, don't cry." Jungkook felt his heart twinge in his chest. He pulled a tissue from the pack and dabbed gently around Taehyung's eyes, being careful not to aggravate the swollen tissue around them.
"I..  really just want you to feel better, and I will do whatever you need to make sure that happens." Jungkook hesitated but finally got up the nerve to bring the slender vocalist into a warm embrace. He gently rubbed small circles into the older man's back and wished he had thought to bring his hoodie to wrap Taehyung in.
************************************************
Taehyung pretty much melted into Jungkook's arms with a whimper and involuntarily leaned most of his weight onto the younger. He just felt so exhausted and miserable.
*************************************************
Jungkook's heart felt like it could burst through his chest as the older man leaned into his hug. He took a deep breath to calm himself before wrapping his arm around Taehyung and asked,
"Do you want to wait here while I let them know?  Or do you want to tell them?" Thinking it over, he added,
"Are you okay to walk? I could carry you?..." he offered this last option shyly, but seeing how unsteady Tae was on his feet, he thought it might be safer that way.
************************************************
Taehyung sighed and closed his eyes. "I-I'll tell themb..." He bit his lip. "C-Can you carry mbe?" He slurred, much too feverish to really comprehend what was going on.
************************************************
Jungkook bent slightly and let Taehyung lean on his arm, he swept the other under the smaller man's knees and raised him up comfortably leaning him against his chest.
The maknae could feel the intense heat rolling off of the older man in waves. He murmured soothingly to Tae as he walked into the main area of the set.
He caught a lot of odd looks on the faces of the crew and staff, but he didn't have the time or the desire to care about that. RM had just finished his set as Jungkook approached him, carrying Tae.
"Hyung... we need to talk to you... right now!"  The leader raised an eyebrow at the youngest members but nodded, taking them off to one side, away from the crowds.
************************************************
Taehyung waited until they'd stop and tapped Jungkook so that the younger could put him down.
When he was down, he leaned against Jungkook for support and turned to Namjoon. "H-Hyug... I-I dond't feel well..." He whimpered, coughing as if on cue. "I-Is it okay if I g-go hombe?"
************************************************
Namjoon's eyes widened at this sudden development. He reached out and gently pressed his palm to Taehyung's forehead. He sucked in a breath and nodded.
"Kookie, are you going to take him?"
Jungkook nodded and said, "Yes, hyung. I can't stand the thought of leaving him like this."
Namjoon pulled out his phone,
"I'll let the driver know to come to the side to pick you up. Get him home safely! With Jimin and Hobi's allergies this shoot might take another 3 or 4 hours anyway. Jungkook, I'm counting on you. Take good care of Tae. If he gets worse, call me immediately."
"I will." Jungkook responded gently, picking his hyung up once more and heading to the less busy side door.
************************************************
Taehyung barely understood what the other two had talked about and, frankly, didn't have the energy to keep up.
When Jungkook picked him up, he let out a small yelp, since he wasn't expecting it. "A-Are we going hombe?" He asked, his voice so small and raspy.
************************************************
"Yes, Tae, I'm taking you home. We will get you home and you can rest. I've got you." As he spoke the sprinter van pulled up and the automatic door opened. Jungkook leaned in, lowering the other vocalist into the seat closest to the door and buckled Tae into it. He reached into the back and pulled out a travel worn blanket that the others used to nap with during long rides. He tenderly covered Taehyung with it and took the seat right next to him, holding his hand.
************************************************
Taehyung leaned back in the seat and closed his eyes. With his mouth agape so he could breathe, he slowly drifted off into a fitful, restless sleep.
He constantly woke up over the course of the ride only to stir slightly, maybe let out a small noise, and go back to sleep.

Sands of Time: Part Four
Put Your Foot in Your Mouth
Pairing: Kuroo Tetsuro x Fem!OC
Warnings: mentions of death, swearing, mutual pining, all the fluff
Tumblr media
Two days later Jade had a note taped to her work locker. Kiyoko had called and asked that Jade please please please call her as soon as she was in. Concern etched across her face, Jade hurried out to her coworker. "Margaret, do you know if Kiyoko said anything in regards to what she needed?"
"Something about the study group tonight I assume. I didn't take the call, Denise did." The older woman replied without turning from her monitor. "Can you run to the supply room and grab more paper for the printers?"
"Yeah, sure thing." With a small shake of her head Jade took the portable and called Kiyoko as she began her shift.
"Shimizu." The answer was swift, to the point and professional.
"Kiyoko, this is Jade from the library. I had a message that you needed to speak with me. Is everything okay?"
“Yes, everything is good, thank you for calling me back so quickly."
Jade listened as she picked through the supply room carefully. For as organized as the shelves on the floor were the supply room drove her a bit crazy with as haphazardly things were quite literally just tossed inside. One of these days, she vowed, she would get the room organized.
"All ten of you?" Jade paused her search as she thought. Did they have anything else going on this evening? No, no group readings or reservations in the meeting rooms. No other study groups, it was Friday after all, most other students would be going home for the weekend or going out to parties. Finally, Jade nodded into the receiver. "That won't be a problem, Kiyoko. I'll prepare a meeting room for you as well so you can all work in peace and at the same table. How does that sound?"
"You're sure? We all aren't out of classes at the same time so some will be trickling in later than others."
"Don't worry about it," Jade reassured. "I'll take care of everything."
True to her word, when the first wave of students arrived a handful of hours later, Jade escorted them to the room she'd prepared. Inside she had an assortment of drinks and snacks as well as extra pens and notepads ready for them. Kiyoko had mentioned a longer session tonight, so why not? There were even a few books scattered around the table.
Kiyoko gave her a grateful smile but said nothing as she circled the table, glancing at the available titles as she went. After the third book she turned a frown towards the group still by the door.
"Midterms are around the corner so I pulled some of the more fact dense and helpful material for your respective fields of study," Jade explained when she saw the look.
"You remember each of our programs?" Iwaizumi cocked an inquisitive brow at her.
"Now, now, Iwa-chan," Oikawa scolded lightly. He even went so far as to pat Jade on the head like a dog who performed a trick correctly. "Be nice to the girl."
"I am nice," Iwaizumi snapped. The two bickered like an old married couple on occasion but deep down everyone, Jade included, could see that they cared greatly for each other.
"It makes sense if you think about it," Yaku said as he settled himself into a chair. "We've been coming here regularly for a year. Clearly Jade was being observant and thoughtful."
Iwaizumi grumbled incoherently but nodded his thanks to Jade as Oikawa dragged him through the room.
"Thank you for the kind words Yaku. You know where to find me if you need anything at all." Jade was quick to duck out of the room before anything else could be said.
Over the course of the next hour and a half most of the remaining students showed up and were guided back to the meeting room. Each was just as surprised as the last by the books already in the room. Each thanked Jade profusely for her thoughtfulness.
She was just coming back from showing Akaashi and Bokuto the room and awkwardly accepting their thanks when Kuroo and Kenma entered the library.
"You're actually going to study with us, right?" Kuroo wondered with a glance at his friend.
"I guess," Kenma replied, though his tone held no commitment. "I feel pretty confident about my grades though."
"And yet you're here," Kuroo smirked. "Why won't you admit that you like hanging out with everyone?"
"Because I don't."
"Do too."
"Do not."
"Please, not again," Jade stopped the friendly banter before it could go any further. Nonetheless she smiled and beckoned them to follow when the boys turned their attention on her. "Come on, everyone else is already here."
"It's not Monday, is it?" Kuroo asked without moving. A frown soured his face.
"No," Jade dragged the word out in mild confusion. "It's definitely Friday and I would appreciate you not try to make the week longer than it already needs to be. Hello Kenma."
"Hey." He didn't even look up from his phone, but Jade had expected that. She watched him for a moment with a small smile before looking up at Kuroo again.
"Why would you think it's Monday anyway?"
"You always dress up on Monday's," he replied with a shrug. "Got a hot date tonight or something?"
Jade was not amused. "Would it matter if I did?"
Kuroo frowned. "Don't be like that, we know each other well enough, wouldn't you say?"
"Not at all," Jade replied a bit too quickly.
"Enlighten me," Kuroo suggested, "why'd you dress up?"
"It's not like I'm even all that dressed up." Jade glanced down at herself in an outfit that wasn't simply jeans and a blouse like usual.
Kuroo continued to frown down at her. After a moment of silence she huffed and rolled her eyes. "Listen, I need to restock returns," Jade gestured over her shoulder, "the others are in the first meeting room down that way."
"You're an idiot," Kenma said after Jade had left them.
"Hey, I noticed she was dressed differently from usual, didn't I?" Why was he getting defensive?
"You could've just complimented her outfit then. Or even asked her if it was a special occasion instead of assuming she only dressed up because she had a date."
"I bet she does have a date."
"That's – you're an idiot." Kenma repeated. He lightened the insult by smiling faintly as his friend.
"Am not," Kuroo huffed, pretending to be more offended than he truly was. He even went so far as to cross his arms and turn his head away.
"Are too."
"Am not."
"Are too."
"Am not."
"Are you two going to join us sometime today?" Having poked his head out of the room at the sound of their voices it was Akaashi who saved Kuroo and Kenma from each other. Just as Oikawa and Iwaizumi had their senseless bickering so did Kuroo and Kenma. Both stemming from decades of friendship and an understanding of one another that only those sort of friendships came with.
She restocked books with an angry sort of gusto that befitted her mood. How dare he assume she only dressed up today because she had a date! Maybe she decided to doll herself up for fun or, you know, just for shits and giggles. And damn him for being right too! Jade's first date in far too long and, if she were being honest with herself, she only got the date because Nyra annoyingly set up a profile on some stupid dating app without her knowledge.
Regardless of her annoyance with Nyra and now with Kuroo, Jade was both excited and incredibly nervous about tonight. A well and true blind date that she'd only been told about this morning and details were still coming in by the hour from her sister. What if the guy was a total weirdo or a creep? What if he wasn't a Tree Nymph, but really one of the dark Fae that her father had warned her from a young age to stay away from? Tonight would go one of two ways; either very well and Jade would agree to a second date or utterly disastrous. Should the latter come to fruition, Jade had already decided that her parents would lose a child.
Jade wasn't asking for Prince Charming. No, she didn't want Mr. Perfect. She didn't even want a knight in shining armor. She didn't need saving. She could slay any of her demons on her own. What she wanted was a partner in crime. She wanted insecurities and flaws. She yearned for intellectual conversations and challenges and a fan of books. An animal lover, not just cats and dogs, but all animals. She hoped for someone who would go for a walk in the rain with her and who held her when she cried over a book at two in the morning. She wanted Tetsuro.
"Are you even listening to me?"
"Oh, Margaret, I'm sorry," Jade shook away her thoughts to focus her attention on her coworker. "I was daydreaming again."
"Do that on your own time." Margaret's tone held no amusement. "It's six now, so I'll be going home. You can handle the last couple of hours on your own, can't you?"
"Of course." Jade fought the urge to roll her eyes and only just held back the animosity in her voice. She'd been working with Margaret for over a year now and closed rather frequently on her own. More often than any of her other coworkers but that was by choice. So naturally she could handle the end of the day customers that came through. "Have a good weekend, Margaret."
Margaret left without another word, something she typically did. In her old age, Margaret didn't see the point in replying to send offs. They get drawn out and tiresome, she'd explained to Jade once. And thought it hadn't sat right with Jade who was she to say otherwise to someone so set in their ways?
Another hour passed and Jade had topped off all the printers of paper, she'd checked in and restocked books as they came through and even helped the mother of an eager pre teen find a handful of books to begin his journey into the world of familiars and dragons and spells. She read a bit, eager herself to begin yet another book. It was her third that week.
There was still two hours before closing and Jade hadn't heard or seen anyone from the study group since storming away from Kuroo and Kenma. Hesitating only a moment she knocked on the door frame alerting them all to her presence. "Just checking in to see if I can help with anything," she explained when all eyes turned on her. "I can take away any books or grab new ones?"
"We'll take care of putting everything away," Sugawara gave her a simple smile.
"You look lovely by the way, Jade." Oikawa leaned back in his chair, dangerously close to toppling over, in order to make eye contact with her. "That color really brings out your eyes."
"Oh, thank you, Oikawa. Anyway, it's been pretty dead here tonight so you guys don't have to be so quiet that even a Brownie would be jealous of you. Folklore says they perform chores for Humans at night in exchange for staying at the home." Jade explained when she was met with confused looks. "Right, so, Bokuto, you can resume your usual antics."
"No! No. Absolutely not. Bokuto, don't you dare." Jade took Akaashi's uncharacteristically loud response as her opportunity to go back to the check out desk.
Oikawa didn't let her get away that easily though. Leaning against the counter he propped his chin in his hand. "Spill, what's his name? Where are you going? How did you meet?"
"This is the first time I'll be meeting him," Jade admitted with a sigh. She fell back into her chair, seemingly exhausted.
"Oh, a blind date," Oikawa sang. "How mysterious. Who set you two up?"
"It's only a blind date for one of us. Nyra, my sister, decided I've been single for too long and set up a profile for me on one of those dating apps."
"That's awful kind of her to help you get your feet back in the water."
"Is it though? I don't even know what she wrote in the about me section so how do I know this guy she agreed for me to meet is even there for anything more than just looks. It's shallow."
"Well, I think you're stunning and anyone who says otherwise is a liar."
"Thank you, but your word is far from gospel, Oikawa," Jade snorted a laugh. "And I don't think your boyfriend will appreciate you complimenting me so openly. He may get the wrong idea."
"Don't worry about Iwa-chan." A dismissive wave of his hand and a wink her way easily turned Jade's scowl into a half smile. "There it is. I'm sure if this mystery man gets to know you tonight he'll see just how wonderful you are."
Jade was used to Oikawa's flirting. She knew it meant nothing but even on his best days he never went this far. With one eyebrow raised in question she cocked her head to the side. "What do you want?"
"Told you she would catch on!" Yaku cackled from the hall.
"Yeah, you aren't that sweet!" Iwaizumi added.
"So mean, Iwa-chan!" Oikawa whined his mantra but regained his composure quickly. He flashed a smile at Jade filling her with dread before his request was even heard. "Would you be a dear and order us some bento boxes? We'll pay of course."
"You know we don't allow food in the library."
"Please Jade."
Oikawa sounded like a child begging to stay up past his bedtime. Jade's scowl returned as she stood, making it back into the meeting room before her chair stopped spinning. "Did you draw straws or just send him because you know his whining irritates me?" She asked no one in particular.
"Yes," Kuroo nodded with a mischievous grin.
"That's not a proper response to her question," Kiyoko remarked. "I did try to dissuade this, Jade but I was overruled. I apologize."
It's not that she didn't want to not break the rules. She herself ate in the library all of the time. But they didn't need to know that. Still, they had been here for a good long while now. "You'll eat with the door closed and put the studying away, you all need a break by now anyway and you'll wash your hands afterwards." Vigorous nods answered her stipulations. "I know one of the guys at the shop nearby, let me call him up real quick. Put your requests together and I'll order for you."
"I knew you'd come around!" Oikawa hugged Jade quickly before returning to his seat.
"I'm sure you did," Jade grumbled. Sometimes she was such a pushover.
