Here's something I'm sure you find infuriating;
"I'm not into politics. I don't really know, I'm just not a political person."
We know that this IS being political! It means you condone everything - you don't think anything is worth fighting for, you're fine with the status quo as long as it benefits you vaguely. It's the mindset of someone so aggressively individualist, that the suffering of others is simply not a concern - since the system can't be broken, if they're alright. The kind of people to vote for a fascist if it'll mean that their taxes are lower next year. To stand by and watch oppression is insidious. Not even watch - to Celebrate oppression as long as it's against the "savages" and "beasts." Mass mistreatment still exists beyond the gulf surrounding apathetic suburbia.

Btw it is very ok to not have empathy. Yes those posts about a lot of autistics having empathy are important and autistic ≠ apathy. But if you don't have empathy, that's alright. One can have no empathy at all and still be very sympathetic. Being apathetic doesn't make you a monster, it's okay.

A really dumb vent but tbh you don't have to feel empathy, guilt, sympathy, compassion, remorse, etc. to be a good person. You can feel none of these and still decide to do the right thing. In fact people who DO feel those things and STILL continue to do horrible things are worse imo.

Empathy means the ablity to feel someone else's emotions. It doesn't dictate wether or not someone is a good person.
Lacking empathy doesn't mean someone doesn't care or is unkind.

I feel many fervent ‘online activists’ are dangerously overestimating people’s capacity not to be desensitised by the cascade of gory images of bloodshed and destruction. Once again I feel social media posturing is souring a lot of this movement.
Anyone perpetually posting solidarity and raising awareness is doing some good, but if your posting consists only of shocking people with very explicit images of violence, and then shaming and guilt-tripping anyone who can’t stand to look at it…
I dunno. I don’t think this is going to be very productive. Like, I get being frustrated by apathy and disliking the way mental health can be weaponised to be selfish etc.
But accusing anyone not covering their socials in news about Palestine + Sudan + Congo + others of being an imperialist accomplice or some such is just going to turn more people away. It’s also shockingly myopic. Capitalism, its soul deadening work culture, its precarity, its consumerist escapism, its climate nihilism, its reactionary resurgence… all of it hasn’t stopped. Anyone but the actual bourgeoisie, i.e. anyone who has to work for a living, no matter how middle class or privileged, is feeling the deadly bite of capitalism’s collapse. Material conditions have not changed. Let’s not pretend that people’s need to withstand this onslaught of horror is incompatible with solidarity or making a meaningful difference.
Stop with this ‘ we are the true allies/empaths/activists’ posturing. If your tactic is to decry all outsiders to your movement as moral cowards and genocide enablers then you are not aiding your cause. Enough with this egoistic self-aggrandisement. This activism of shame is not sustainable. Guilt cannot keep people on board without burning them out.
In activism, as in anything, we should act by the values we hold. No the ends justifying the means bullshit (antisemitism, Islamophobia and dehumanisation are always wrong btw).
In activism, as in society, we should engage from each according to their ability, to each according to their needs.
