聖マリア大聖堂

切手の博物館を出た後、急遽行ってみることにしたのは東京カテドラル聖マリア大聖堂。

元々あった聖堂が第二次世界大戦の東京大空襲で焼け、その後昭和39年に丹下健三氏の設計で出来た建物です。

想像を遥かに超える巨大な建物で驚きました。そして当時の建築としてはかなり変わっていたのでは？　

中にも入りましたが、最初は天井が低く、その後思いっきり高くなっていて、迫力が出るよう計算されているなぁと。

先日行ったフランク・ロイド・ライト設計の明日館も、最初は天井低く、その後高く…となっていたので、まさに同じですね。

教会によくあるカラフルなステンドグラスはなく、十字架に続く赤い絨毯が印象的でした。

内部の壁のコンクリートは、木を押し付けた模様が入っていて、程よいあたたかさが出ている気がしました。

行って実際に見学でき、よかったです。

it has been rainy everyday here since I arrived. Actually I think it has been raining most close to two weeks. Yesterday I decided to spend a day indoor. I visited Sydney Museum, Australian Museum, and Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA). Also the main cathedral St.Mary near Australia Museum. All of these museums are free admissions, so I thought these are not great museums, or the government of Australia is very generous. Australian Museum was about history(white men arriving from England and had troubles with aborigines) and natural history like Field Museum in Chicago (Animals, dinosaurs, etc). Sydney Museum was mainly about the history of Opera House (Why it was controversial, how much did it cost, etc)

MCA was about, as the name implies, contemporary arts. To me it wasn’t that great, but I don’t know much about contemporary arts. I prefer museums in Europe.

on the outside of St.Mary I found a bronze statue of St. John Paul II.

Visiting Trinity Church in St. John. St.John is known for Bay of Fundy (for extremely high tides locates between Canada’s Nova Scotia & New Brunswick where St. John is). Next church was in Halifax named St.Mary’s Cathedral Basilica. In picture the breakfast area compared with the restaurant, that special night for the trip featured escargot as appetizer and boiled lobster as main meal.

The final presentation of our 'Radius' project.

We explored the changes in Limerick and how it's progressed over the years. After our trip around the town we took photos and then chose to work on our own take based off this concept.

I focused doing landscape sketches of the graveyard at St.Mary's Cathedral, representing a part of older Limerick.

Mdina was the old capital city of Malta before the arrival of the Knights of the Order of St. John in 1530. FROM FORTIFIED CITY TO GUNPOWDER FORTRESS Mdina’s fortifications, as they stand today, are the product of the many interventions and additions made by the Knights as they sought to transform the old fortified city into a gunpowder fortress. The first of these works were started in the 1540s and the decades leading up to the Great Siege on Malta of 1565. From the reign of Grand Master Martin de Redin onwards, these were then followed by the addition of various ramparts and outer works, culminating in the efforts undertaken during the reign of Grand Master Manoel de Vilhena in the first decades of the eighteenth century. THE WORK OF DE MONDION With the sole exception of Despuig Bastion, erected to the rear of the Mdina cathedral in 1739, the fortifications of Mdina, or Città Notabile/Vecchia as it was later known, owe their final character and form, including its Baroque gateways, to the works undertaken by the Order's military engineer Charles François de Mondion. By 1798, the fortifications of Mdina had come to consist of a bastioned enceinte, a ditch and various outer works. The main bastioned defences were built along the land front which was strengthened with three bastions: - D'Homedes/St. Paul Bastion; - De Redin Bastion; - St. Peter Bastion) In addition to these bastions, the other fortifications werte a wide ditch, and a covertway with glacis. The land front contained the two main gateways and a signalling tower, called Torre dello Standardo. The western flank of the city, facing Mtarfa Hill, was defended by the casemated curtain called the Magazine Curtain, as well as the small St.Mary/Ta' Bachar Bastion. The eastern flank, overlooking Saqqajja, was defended by a series of curtain walls and the low Despuig Bastion. The northern section of the enceinte, built as it was along the crest of the cliff-face of the plateau, retained most of its medieval ramparts as this section was deemed less vulnerable to attack and bombardment.
