as the chairman of the wiki, do you have any opinions on the ng+ being behind a paywall?

More than anything, it baffles me to see this talking point get regurgitated in the news cycle every other month as if it wasn't made clear from almost the beginning. If you ask me, next to no one complaining about it is informed on the topic, and next to no one complaining about it is actually the type of person who'd end up wanting to replay the (60-100+ hour) game anyway.

The fact of the matter is that Japan's been paying for DLC we've been given for free ever since Yakuza 3. Even Yakuza: Like a Dragon's NG+ was paid before it was released worldwide, although at 7 yen (later 700), it was practically free, if I recall correctly. It's about time there's parity between Japan's experiences and the rest of the world's.

As for the DLC itself, news outlets and social media have by and large misrepresented its contents to make it appear as if all it's doing is paywalling a basic feature. But it's not just NG+. It's a fuckton of extra content (including new difficulties and all the rebalancing that has to come with that for an RPG, a new side story, and other exclusives) too, justifying the price tag and greatly enhancing the replay value of NG+ to begin with.

When it comes down to it, sure, I'm not the biggest fan of the practice and it'd be more convenient for me as a wiki editor to have these features in the base game. But at the same time, you know, that's all it is. A convenience. Stay informed, focus on the big picture, and make space for nuance in the discussion. Same as anything.
