#spongebob squarepants battle for bikini bottom rehydrated
Text
plankton (spongebob squarepants, 1999-) is really the guy of all time; he's not a guy, he's, married to a computer, he's vindictive and evil but also bad at it so it doesn't matter, he's psychosexually obsessed w his ex business partner who's daughter is a whale (could eat him), he's been on a revenge mission for literal years and fails at every step of the way but refuses to give up

Game 254 - SpongeBob Squarepants: Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated by Purple Lamp
Tumblr media
What did I think it was at first? So my sister and I actually rented the OG game for Gamecube and didn't make it too far. When I saw someone speedrunning the original game and heard there would be a remaster, I definitely wanted to play it! I remember it being tons of fun but also pretty hard.
Tumblr media
How was the character creator? SpongeBob is a classic character in the children's cartoon canon - he's still airing now I think and I watched him a lot growing up. You don't really make tons of decisions for SpongeBob and you can't affect his personality. You can play as SpongeBob, Sandy, and Patrick - and they all have different abilities and gameplay styles. I think they're all also voiced by the original voice actors? All of the voice acting in this game was great.
Tumblr media
How was the game? This is a pretty forgiving platforming game with some puzzly elements. The main goal of the game is collecting Golden Spatulas by completing objectives that range from easy to challenging. One thing I really liked about the game was that you don't actually have to finish all of the levels or collect all of the spatulas to win - you can pick and choose 75 out of 100 options.
Even though the characters have different moves, the goals are pretty similar - complex platforming, puzzle solving, collecting items, or racing down slopes. The different level designs and different abilities for SpongeBob kept things from going stale very quickly, and there's a fast travel system so if one objective is frustrating you it's easy to go and work on something else. The game is also very forgiving - there's no lives and many of your achievements persist after death, so it's OK to go back and retry things as much as you like.
The graphics on the remaster are very pretty and I experienced only minor lag on some levels. There's a ton of references to old SpongeBob cartoons and it was always funny to get thrown back to something I watched with a bowl of cereal on Saturday mornings. The fish announcer popping up during boss fights was a favorite.
Tumblr media
What did I not love? There were some collision challenges and hitboxes that were a little wonky. The music could also get repetitive after long periods of time - they seem to be loops based on the cartoons but there often wasn't a lot of loop for each stage, so that got annoying occasionally. Speaking of the bosses - I didn't find them especially challenging - the stages were actually much more difficult than those. I would have liked a liiiiittle more difficulty.
Tumblr media
At 12 hours and $9.89, was it really worth it? I wouldn't necessarily call this a cozy game, but it felt really nostalgic and wholesome - and the lack of lives meant there wasn't a lot of pressure to get things right on a certain attempt which is one quality I find challenging about platformers. I recommend this one if you enjoy platformers and can stand hearing SpongeBob's laugh over and over for nine hours.

Name: G-Love
Debut: SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom
While licensed games generally have a mediocre reputation, the first two SpongeBob 3D platf- JUST KIDDING you don’t need that whole intro spiel! This isn’t, like, 2014. Everyone knows about Battle for Bikini Bottom and everyone knows it is awesome and epic. Partly because the gameplay is awesome, partly because you get to explore SpongeBob’s world with all sorts of classic and original elements, and partly because funny robots!
Tumblr media
And what funny robots they are! This game amassed an astounding armada of angry automatons, and while they are all, at the very least, Delightful, there is one that really stands out! And I am not talking about the Regular Jellyfish. That does stand out! But it is just not a robot.
Tumblr media
G-Love is, among all of these mostly-approximately-humanoid, mostly-gray robots, a brightly-painted green and purple UFO-shaped thing! it has two bobbly antennae in the front, bringing eyestalks to mind even if they may not be eyestalks, and FIVE arms. FIVE! That’s an odd number! They can’t just have the same number of right and left hands. In fact, they don’t really seem to have right or left hands, instead being able to rotate them around as needed! And do I even need to mention the white gloves? Do I really need to tell you all that white gloves as hands on the ends of cold, metal, robotic arms are always wonderful? Because I will gladly tell you anytime!
Tumblr media
Even with no face, and possibly no eyes, G-Love is quite expressive, thanks to its g-loves! Anyway, here it is clapping after successfully damaging the player with its trademark spinny slap attack, a job well done! No, it is not broken here, its arms are just VERY floaty sometimes. I am not sure why.
Tumblr media
HANDS-down the most fun way to defeat a G-Love is with Sandy’s lasso! The lasso works on basically any enemy, and is an especially good option for large robots, but there is nothing quite like wrangling a G-Love. It just feels so impactful, with the way it flips and all five hands get tied together, like you’ve really discovered this thing’s weakness!
Tumblr media
G-Love received a redesign in the Rehydrated version of the game and, hmm! I have not yet seen this one in action, but I do like the eye-bulb with a crooked antenna it has, but I think the original bobblies work better. I like the lack of a distinct “head” on the original, and it also better communicates that it is weak to being stomped by a Bubble Bounce from above. This is still a very good robot, though!
Also, how have you been pronouncing this name? I’ve always thought “Gee-love”, and that is probably the intended way, but surely there are some who think “Guh-love”. Maybe you think “Guh-love” just to be different, and that’s okay.

I Bought "Spongebob Squarepants: The Cosmic Shake", For Culture.
Tumblr media
The Culture I am of course referring to being the hyper specific cross section of people who were the exact right age in the year 2003 to rent Spongebob Squarepents: Battle For Bikini Bottom from Blockbuster, or Hollywood video if you were fancy. If you happen to be in that tiny little sliver of humanity, you probably at least know that Battle For Bikini Bottom is a genuinely great game. So great, in fact, that somebody actually wound up remembering the thing fondly enough that it received a mid budget remake a few years ago for then modern consoles and PC. Well, here we are a little over two years on from Battle For Bikini Bottom Rehydrated, and now we have Cosmic Shake. Cosmic Shake's status is odd, sure. Being a spiritual sequel, to a remake, of a game from 2003 based on Spongebob. That said I'm happy to say that, thus far, Cosmic Shake is a lot of fun, and a worthy successor to that rental classic we all (Read: dozens of us) loved. Gameplay is hardly changed, albeit the game is less focused on collect-athon aspects and is more linear than it's predecessor. It's still largely a straightforward platformer set in the world of Spongebob, and you know what? It still works. A lot of the fun, for me anyway, of Battle For Bikini Bottom, was being able to walk around in the world of Spongebob. Getting to explore all the familiar locations from the show first hand. Cosmic Shake approaches this a little differently. Rather than re-hashing the same basic locations, Cosmic Shake essentially explores alternate reality versions of the level concepts you'd be familiar with from the first game. For example, Jellyfish Fields is now Wild West themed, and Downtown Bikini Bottom is set in some kind of weirdo Karate Universe. The game manages to reuse the same basic locations as the first game, but adds enough of a fun twist that it doesn't just feel like you're playing the same levels over again, not that the actual level designs are all that similar to the ones in Battle For Bikini Bottom. The rest of the gameplay is honestly almost a carbon copy of Battle For Binkini Bottom thus far. Spongebob has the same basic spin attack, same double jump, even a lot of the same animations. Though with the caveat that a lot of the animations in this game are far cleaner and more expressive than in the BFBB remake. It was obvious in that game the new models were papered over some older animations, this one at least allows itself to move beyond things that were set in stone shortly after Heavy Iron Studios made the worlds best Scooby-Doo game in 2002.
So far I'm having a really good time with Cosmic Shake! Every once and awhile it's nice to remember that video games can be both this type of mid budget platformer, and AAA action horror games (I'm also playing Dead Space! It's still great!). Hopefully Spongebob keeps up this pace and I can get in and get out with this delightful little multiverse adventure. Or, honestly, maybe this thing will just inspire me to watch "Wet Painters" again, a perfect episode of television.
