rewatching early s15 again on the tnt loop today, and like... dean and cas were on the way to understanding, to forgiving. dean all but admitted he knew he was wrongly blaming cas for everything, for mary’s death, for what happened to jack, etc. and dean didn’t even wait for cas to really explain what happened in hell in 15.03. there wasn’t really time for anything else in the moment other than bewilderment before rowena came stumbling out to the hell pit and flung herself in to save them all. all dean had a chance to process was that this was the consequence of cas’s rogue action, and afterward he didn’t want to hear cas’s “excuses.” though cas never really attempts to explain in a way that dean understands, and dean never really lays out what he was so upset about in a way cas can understand.
cas knows he did the right thing, the only thing he could do (and exactly what dean would’ve done in his shoes, too... even if dean doesn’t get that or understand or even want to hear it...).
dean also knows what doing the right thing cost them all here.
and he knows it’s all just more games set up by chuck. literally, he was the one who directly put them into this situation.
(meanwhile sam is like “hey we’re probably free now! chuck’s out of the picture now! i’m sure everything will be fine and normal! and there is just no way in heck dean could ever let himself believe that...)
and dean... he’s just too shocked, too disillusioned about everything he ever believed about himself. it’s a paralyzing sort of revelation that nothing in his entire life may have truly been his own, especially for a guy who lived his entire life on the principle that HE was the only constant in his own life, where his own freedom and free will had defined him and held him together through everything... and because of all of that he just can’t see what cas did through any other lens than his own bewilderment and hurt.
it’s actually rowena’s death that pissed off dean so much at this point (not mary’s... yeah, that hurt was in there but...). she died because cas changed the plan.
this whole scene with cas leaving should’ve been The Main Problem of the season for him and dean, which narratively should’ve been completely overturned by the finale.
Jack’s dead, Chuck’s gone, and you and sam have each other. I think it’s time for me to move on... (and then cas leaves)
(because jack would come back, chuck is not gone, and dean and sam only having each other is a dismal catastrophe, not a glorious relief... and the rest of s15 sorta proves that point... right up to the fucking finale)
gah, i just needed to share out the suffering a bit, there’s not really a point pretty much everyone everywhere (including me, multiple times) has already made

if you think about it, rowena and ketch dying in 15.03 at the same time is an interesting parallel to 8.10: sam and dean both lose their "love interests" and thus return to each other. rowena, the girl who had enjoyed relationship development with sam, is thus sacrificed by him as foretold by prophecy; ketch, the hunter whom dean had grown fond of, is murdered because he got in the way. the obstacles that threaten to pull sam and dean out of their binary star system are removed and they have no choice but to snap back into each other's arms because once again they have no one else but each other. their perpetual isolation is ensured by the persistent demise of anyone who dares to step close to the black hole of their consumptive love. and so on and so forth

(non spn watcher here) when did destial become a canon love story with writer intent? like was there more destiel-ness in the season leading up to the nov 5th confession?
Okay *cracks knuckles*.
First and foremost, I'm gonna tell you about my SPN history. I started watching SPN and got caught up with the show while s10 was airing and was watching live until the end of s12. I gave up specifically because Castiel's s11 plot proved to be just on the side of too miserable for me, and s12 didn't really make it any better (Cas dies at the end of that season). During this time, and until Nov 5th 2020, I was solidly on camp "Dean and Cas are never going to be canon just because of what SPN is fundamentally as a show, and even if they did, I cannot imagine a situation where it would be a good thing for Cas given SPN's track record on how they treat the angel."
When Nov 5th happened I was sucked back into the show. In preparation for the finale I watched all of s13-15 in the two weeks between the confession episode and the finale. Again, my perspective going into this endeavour was still very doubtful and pessimistic, specifically on the Dean side of the equation.
The beginning of s13 was a bit of a shock to me, honestly. It starts with what the fandom calls 'The Widower's Arc'. I think this was the arc that most solidly cements the feelings from Dean's side. It was so vehement in pointing out that Dean feels for Cas in a way so distinguished from how Sam does. In the very first episode of the season (so the first episode I watched after going back into SPN), Dean quietly wraps Cas' body with a curtain all by himself in a sunlit room. And I go Oh. Okay.
This vibe does wane after Cas comes back and regular SPN hijinks ensues. S14 actually ends with Dean and Cas fighting and Dean doing his usual Dean-isms. 15.03 is when that fight culminates: they break up and spend a couple episodes apart from each other.
15.09 The Trap features Dean and Cas in purgatory, and this was Truly An Episode. They bicker through-out the entire thing and are pretty pissed at one another, but then Cas gets taken, and Dean desperately prays to him, confesses his anger issues, forgives Cas and asks for forgiveness back. Later, they reunite, and Cas acknowledges that he heard everything Dean said.
This episode is so interesting to me because it culminates the Dean and Cas fight-separation-reconciliation plot of s15, and in doing so confirms it to be as important as it is. I cannot point enough that the plot reasons for the stuff happening in 15.09 is so pointless. They go to purgatory for a fetch quest for an item that can be interchangeable with literally anything else, specifically to put Dean and Cas back in purgatory (a meaningful place for them), have them be separated, and have the prayer happen. The whole point of the Dean and Cas portion of the episode is to do character work. We don't even see the scene where Cas finally gets the thing they're here to acquire in the first place. That's literally not the point. The point is Cas and Dean's story. S15 is the last season of a show with so many big things to wrap up, and they make it a point to have Dean and Cas go through a half-season arc that DOES occupy so much of the season and brings a new openness, vulnerability, and room for development into their relationship.
So yeah, before 15.18 there WAS very visible marks of the fact that Something was gonna happen. Interestingly enough all those marks were pretty dean-centric. I would say s4-10 destiel is the audience being inundated that Cas loves Dean. S11-15, ESPECIALLY 13-15 is so very much making it known that Dean loves Cas too.
On a related note, on Nov 21, 2020, a post is made here on tumblr claiming that around Dec 2016 (S12 was airing at this point), Warner Bros. conducted a market research about Supernatural, and from this person's experience, specifically about Dean and Cas and Dean's sexuality (link to a post that confirms the information in the post to be true). This market research was during the time leading up to s13, which I think does mark a big change in how the love between Dean and Cas started being framed by the show as something Dean both feels and is also aware of.
So, to answer your questions.
Was there more destiel-ness in the season leading up to the nov 5th confession? Yes.
When did destiel become a canon love story with writer intent? It became a canon love story by S15, but the writer intent to make it canon goes way back to s13 but probably even s12.

For anyone who still doesn’t understand why people relate to Castiel, defend him fiercely, and root for his happiness:
Have you ever felt like you were always standing on the outside looking in no matter how hard you tried to adapt and belong?
Have you ever thought you did something right, for the right reasons, only to be told you were wrong over and over, or worse, selfish when the cost you paid was dear?
Have you ever felt no matter how many battles you fight for others, when peace again reigns and those you fought alongside don’t need your help anymore, that you’re actually all alone and no one has your back?
Have you ever given yourself to the point of feeling profoundly empty, emotionally and physically, and gotten little to nothing to hold on to in return?
Yeah. Those are just a few of the reasons he deserves better - a few of the reasons we all do.

save me from andrew dabb and the tnt loop... hello 8.22:
Castiel: I like this bunker. It's orderly. Sam: Oh, give us a few months. Dean wants to get a ping-pong table. Castiel: I've heard of that. It's a game, right?
PING PONG. Why has this particular reference resurfaced in the last week or two just to torment me. I am tormented... but my torment is not over. This episode is full of angst about the story-- about Bad Guys™ literally using the story written by Chuck IN-STORY as a weapon and a tool.
Metatron-- having spent millennia collecting the stories of Humanity-- somehow ~missed~ the Supernatural series entirely. In addition to having cut himself off from angel radio, somehow not noticing the entire apocalypse going down a few years prior or the resurfacing of the Leviathan or Cas swallowing Purgatory and becoming the new God(stiel) for a bit. Like... none of that ever cracked through whatever warding and protection he’d surrounded himself with and pinged his danger warning systems. How isolated must he have been? Or how much had Chuck also been shielding him from discovering any of this? Keeping him on ice as a character in his Grand Narrative to let him discover everything he’d apparently missed while in isolation, only to set him loose on the story armed with the story itself?
It’s wild how many plot twists and Chekhov’s Guns Chuck managed to plant throughout the history of creation, and the discovery of Adam and Serafina in 15.17 just goes to show how well and truly seeded the narrative was, in retrospect. And Metatron, to me, seems like one of the biggest seeds-- him and his Tablets, which for me was the ONE time Chuck truly managed to manipulate Sam and Dean into breaking the universe, rather than “tricking” them into stumbling into the choices he wanted them to make. The s8 arc of the Demon Tablet Trials was the single time Sam and Dean made a cosmic-level CHOICE to break the natural order. They could’ve left well enough alone, let the status quo stand, but no... they decided that the gates of Hell should be closed and locked forever. And I’m so grateful they pulled a 180 at the last minute, even if that one bad choice, that one grand act of hubris, propelled the narrative for the next seven years. It still stands as Chuck’s own little egotistical proof that Sam and Dean are just as manipulative and corrupt as he was, that they would meddle with the cosmic order to that degree, even if they chose not to go through with it when they knew the full truth.
Poor Cas, though...
CASTIEL: Dean, I can go with you. Dean. I'm sorry. DEAN: For what? CASTIEL: For everything. DEAN: Everything? Like, uh... Like ignoring us? CASTIEL: Yes. DEAN: Or like bolting off with the Angel Tablet, then losing it 'cause you didn't trust me? You didn't trust me. CASTIEL: Yes. DEAN: Yeah. Nah, that's not gonna cut it. Not this time. So you can take your little apology and you cram it up your ass. CASTIEL: Dean, I thought I was doing the right thing. DEAN: Yeah, you always do.
And here we have the OG version of the s15 breakup arc... back then it led to Cas becoming vulnerable to Metatron’s manipulation, leading directly to Cas’s full exploration of his own humanity. Throughout s8, he’d had his eyes opened to the true nature of Heaven, and now I can’t help but see Metatron taking Cas’s grace and returning him to live a human life as a punishment that Chuck would’ve truly felt was a punishment, you know? Except... that’s not how Cas saw it at all.
And before I start getting angry that Cas was never allowed to accept his own humanity and choose the life that Chuck saw as a punishment because to Cas it would’ve been a GIFT... I’m gonna return to the discussion of villains using the story itself as a weapon...
Crowley did the same, just as the Leviathans had done in 7.06. He used the story itself to manipulate the Winchesters, in a slightly different way than before. The Levi’s used locations to set a trap for Sam and Dean, but Crowley went directly after the individuals they’d saved, choosing specific victims they’d saved that would hurt the most to lose, to convince them to stop the Hell Trials. Granted, the “villainousness” here was mostly based in self-preservation. If they slammed the gates of Hell and banished all demons from the earth forever, Crowley would’ve been stuck in hell, forever. And he would’ve hated it... So it’s hard to really fault him from taking whatever measures necessary to stop that from happening to him.
But Metatron... he took The Word, weaponized it like the Chuck Protege he was. Surely, he’d also spent the intervening millennia hiding out of self-preservation so the agents of Heaven wouldn’t tear into him to pluck out the information they needed to take over Heaven. I mean, they eventually organized the whole apocalypse deal even without the power of the angel tablet powering them up the way Metatron did. But with that tablet... well, any angel could’ve set themselves up as the new God. It was just the method Metatron used was just as manipulative and dodgy as Chuck’s own writing, since he’d used Chuck’s own stories as his template.
I just find all of this fascinating. It really is spirals all the way down, right up until the penultimate episode of the series. Then everything stops making sense and we got That™.

Same old empty feeling in your heart
Tumblr media
Love comes slow and it goes so fast
Tumblr media
Maybe one day you'll understand why
Tumblr media
Everything you touch surely dies
Tumblr media
Cause you only need the light when it's burning low
Tumblr media
You only miss the sun when it starts to snow
Tumblr media
Only know you've been high when you're feeling low

Only hate the road when you're missing home

Only know you love him when you let him go

And you let him go
