You know, I don't think I would have ever expected Spinner of all people being the last guy AFO betted on XD (on a side note, I love AFO getting his shit kicked in again. Arrogant bastard derseves it so much!~) I'm happy we're going to see best villain boy again!! If you were to ask me during Training Camp if Spinner was gonna be an endgame important villain, I'd have laugh! Hope he can make All Might regret not putting up a match for him...or giving him a cool epithet!

My goodness, I hope the Spinner importance pans out, for so many reasons.  Of course, as a Take That to All Might for omitting him, the fandom for underestimating him, and for all the anime production committee’s crimes, too.  But there’s also just a great thematic weight there as well.

Like, the bond that Shigaraki built with the League needs to come to something, otherwise why did we spend so much time on it?  I would very much like to be able to gloat about having been saying for ages that Spinner’s lack of an obvious student parallel is just as much a reason to guess that he'd be important to the endgame as a reason to guess that he wouldn't!  And lo, here we have that: Twice and Mr. Compress removed from the field, Shigaraki cornered by Deku, with Dabi and Toga, the much-hailed other two members of the Villain Trio that no one (least of all the merchandising department) can shut up about, peeled off by their own respective foils.  And who's left?

Spinner, the one whose only credible student foil has always been Deku himself, the one who adores Shigaraki the most, the one Mr. Compress trusted to figure out how to wake Shigaraki up, the only person in the entire comic who's bonded with Shigaraki on the simple human level of a shared hobby.  I mean, just look at how everyone else stacks up:

The heroes see Shigaraki as a monster and a threat to be put down, to the extent that they've explicitly built their plans around killing him, not defeating him and remitting him to the justice system.

Deku only cares about Shigaraki for the pitiable victim he sees in him, thinking not at all of whoever Shigaraki might be beyond the Crying Boy.

AFO sees him as his next vessel, with his own individuality only worth anything for the path it can provide to stealing OFA.

Other villains---including the rest of the League!---see him as a path to a transformed world.  True Liberation, Harima's dream, Toga's world where she can live freely.  They care about Shigaraki, but their connection is still based in nakama, in alliance, in common cause.

While Spinner certainly has the nakama angle as well in that vision of the barren horizon, his line about bonding with Shigaraki over video games is completely unique.  Let me just share this link to codenamesazanka's recent post on the matter.

But also just in general, yes, if the series wants to harp on teamwork and the strength of Intentions, then it really just needs to stop cockblocking villain cooperation and also let Spinner's strong intention to help and support Shigaraki matter for Shigaraki, and not just as a method for AFO to manipulate him.

Cute little scene I’m currently rotating in my brain:

It’s the month-long Machia Throwdown and around the time Shigaraki is due to get his three-hour break, Spinner is relaxing on a hot boulder in the sun.

Shigaraki walks over exhausted and loopy and asks if it’s warm up there, to which Spinner sleepily replies, “Why don’t you come up and find out?”

Shigaraki take the invitation and jumps up onto the boulder, plopping down next to Spinner (or on top of Spinner if he wants to be a little shit).

After the shock of Shigaraki intentionally choosing to lie that close wears off, Spinner settles back down and they sunbathe together on the warmest spot in the winter weather.

shigaraki is the only person who can save spinner (because afo sure as hell is not going to take those quirks away). maybe spinner is the only person who can truly save shigaraki (now that deku has saved the crying child)? spinner who is so convinced that he's useless, without purpose that he made a devil's bargian with afo because he thought there was no other way for him to help. but there's still the power of friendship. Anyway. spinaraki will win. i swear to god

not even joking if spinner's melting brain is not addressed before the story is through this manga is fucking dead to me. like ideally yes by shigaraki taking those quirks away so that maybe he can recover even a lil but just anything please horikoshi.

anyways i'm sure that overall shigaraki saving credit is still going to go to deku whatever he's the main character but the incredible opportunity just sitting there with shigaraki being saving through the connections he formed all himself and the love he earned. all himself. without a hero condescending to him the entire way. proof that shigaraki can be a hero in his own way and spinner can also be a hero in a way that afo didn't account for. it'd be soooooo beautiful yall spinaraki is so beautiful........

thought about random au ideas for Spinaraki. It's a vampire/monster au or monster au whichever one.

Spinner:

•He is a lizard mutant but also can shapeshifter into human form but not that long.

•He works at night shift as a nurse.

•He has his pet lizard just to make sure in case his guest doesn't know he has all the lizard stuff care for himself.

•He goes to the arcade on his days off and some time with Shigaraki. •He has learned combat from his caretaker. In case he is in danger.

•He is a gamer nerd

Shigaraki:

•He is a vampire

•He usually works at a bar with Kurogiri but his job is to collect blood bags.

•He is a leader in vampire groups.

•He mostly has free time to stay inside and play video games and sleep. But mostly now spend a lot of time with spinners.

•He learns about being a vampire from his master.

•He loves dogs a lot.

Story about:

Shuichi was working late at night at his usual job. When Suddenly looked ahead, he saw a nurse and a doctor rushing with a patient, who had been seriously injured. The doctor asks for his assistance in obtaining emergency kits for patients. When he returns, he notices the nurse attempting to calm down the patients while the doctor attempts to give the patients a shot. Shuichi told the nurse that he would calm down and go help the doctor. Shuichi was trying to think of a way to calm down the patients but ended up asking stupid questions like "Uh um, do you like video games?" The patient looked at him, confused but he replied, "Yes."' Shuichi kept the conversation going until the doctor was finally able to give him a shot, and the patient will have him falling asleep while the doctor begins to treat his wound. Shuichi went to work the next day and wanted to see the patient from the night before. He wasn't worried, but he wanted to check on him because he seemed to dislike the hospital and was effectively in pain. He approached the nurse but was surprised. The nurse says he was released early in the morning and gave him a note to go to the pharmacy to get his medication. Shuichi thought it was insane to let patients go after such an injury, but he reasoned that the patient was probably scared to stay in the hospital and didn't want to pay bills. Shuichi simply lets it go and goes about his usual activities. After a few weeks, he was about to clock out in the waiting rooms. Shuichi saw the same patient from a few weeks ago and asked if he was here for a check-up because he showed up pale. He said yes as if he was either uncomfortable or scared to answer, and he was simply requesting to have one of his wounds on his arms fixed up again. Shuichi decided to assist him and informed him that he called a doctor. However, he requested his assistance because he felt more at ease with him than with the doctor and nurse the previous time. Shuichi decided to do it if it was only his arm, and while he was stitching up his wound, he asked him if he was ok. The patients say he was fine, but his arm needed to heal for a few more weeks. Patients thank him for calming him down in the emergency room, which Shuichi was correct about because he dislikes hospitals. He also asked about his name, which Shuichi has shared. Shuichi asks his name as well, so he won't forget him if he returns. Shuichi now knew the patient's name was Shigarak, which he thought was a lovely name. Shuichi was nearly finished wrapping his wound when Shigaraki asked if he wasn't lying about playing video games. Shuichi confirmed that he also enjoys video games. Shuichi had no idea what had happened that crazy night, but seeing him again made him happy for a change. He made friends and his life was about to change for the better, but he was also trying to hide his true self because he didn't want his friends to find out he was a lizard mutant.

the unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

you've made this hard for me by excluding those two... rei is one of those characters who is "unpopular" as in, ime, actually disliked rather than just ignored, and the target of a lot of unfair assessments by virtue of being an abused spouse; spinner is a character who is "unpopular" as in ignored, which is also puzzling because he's one of the few characters who actually sustains an emotional arc throughout the last half of the series, which is gay enough that people would go crazy over if he was drawn to be conventionally attractive. if he wasn't off-limits i would put in a strong argument for spinner... u_u

i don't think there are other, more important characters whose popularity are disproportionate to their screentime/role in the story, and i don't really like most random side characters anymore (rip dabistits jirou fan 2017-2019). imo bnha is one of those stories where you have more characters who are disproportionately popular for doing nothing than characters who are disproportionately unpopular (because 80% of the cast does nothing fr). but okay. in order to not be a copout i will still answer:

himiko. HEAR ME OUT, yes, she gets a lot of merch and made a strong showing early on the series. (take the following with a grain of salt because i only interact with 5 people in the fandom,) but i think himiko has recently been less favored in comparison to the other villains. dabi has a lot of haters but also diehard fans, and i think even normie bnha readers have come around to tomura. himiko hasn't really kept up with the growth of that diehard fanbase or general popularity, despite originally being one of the "villain trio." her motives aren't given the same depth as other characters, and there's usually very little focus on her as her own character. maybe people like her as part of the lov, as the "little sister," or worse as part of a ship with some adult, but rarely for herself. she's one of the few fleshed out female characters in the series, and people don't even take advantage of that.

it's absolutely criminal that the fandom has been sleeping on...

there's so many possibilities the fandom sleeps on but lets just say spinaraki. i think it deserves to have people making genuinely unhinged posts about them and moodboards and quotes about walking with your lover into hell or whatever. there should be amvs set to i'll follow you into the dark by death cab for cutie. there should be artists devoted to them and fixating on just This One Ship. the amount of canon backing they have is unreal but everyone would rather draw two cute guys who canonically hate each other or something.

screaming over your spinaraki post because yes yes YES. Spinner by Shigaraki(AFO) side all this time and caring for him, of course talking to him and shigaraki using that as an anchor. maybe it won’t be canon but it fits perfectly with what we know about them!

YEAH with how long they spent there, with how prone to just speaking his mind we know spinner is, and knowing that he just wanted to care for shigaraki however he could and maybe get him back, i can see him just. talking to him like they normally would. and since his time spent with the league and the bond he has with them (individually and as a group) is also an important part of who tomura shigaraki is, having the physical and auditory reminder of that speaking right next to him could have helped, even if it was just shigaraki thinking it was a nice gesture. canon is whatever we want it to be anyways im just thinking about it and going :-) they r Friends.

Adding to this manga panel is Spinner facing discrimination for having a mutant quirk and Shigaraki literally killing an entire cult because they called Spinner a derogatory term as well as never viewing him as different or lesser than for his quirk.
