Preliminary Round G
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut (May contain major spoilers for one or more of the campaigns listed above)
Kalina - She was such a well done villain, incredibly unnerving, and so fascinating in her ties to Riz and Pok. I love her with all my heart.
Barry Nyne - Poor man, killed his family under the control of a brain slug
Em - An iron statue atop the Bethesda Fountain. She guards and protects the waters in and around New York City, a source of neutral divine magic, designed by a woman (has a womans touch), besties with Sofia
Master Ipskix - hes a dirty little freak
Primsy Coldbottle - Love her accent, love that she's both young/innocent and incredibly competent as a leader, love that she's a sassy independent woman, who doesn't need no man, even on the brink of death.
Hallariel Seacaster - A wine mom, an expert swordswoman, she cut a man's eye out of his head and he proposed on the spot. Milf.
Woman in the Moon - moon lady
The Tornado - It was such a great bit, I hope we meet the tornado properly in Junior Year
Justin Fication - Conrads best friend
Cinderella's Mice - The way "We was turned into men" was said with such horror will always like rent free in my head. Love a good existential crisis. Especially one that humorous. It's almost Lovecraftian, the way Brennan portrayed it.

alright here we go again. for this episode of thisisnotthenerd's d20 stats, we're talking seasons. specifically how to categorize them because not all d20 seasons are run the same way. here goes:
season concepts
this list is not intended to be perfect, it's either official description or how i can best describe them in a few words:
Tumblr media
Fantasy High Freshman Year: John Hughes/DND
Escape from the Bloodkeep: The Villains Side of Lord of the Rings
The Unsleeping City: DND/NYC
Tiny Heist: Ocean's 11/Borrowers
A Crown of Candy: Game of Thrones/Candyland
Pirates of Leviathan: Pirate City/Insurance Fraud
Fantasy High Sophomore Year: John Hughes/DND with a Haunted Forest
The Unsleeping City Chapter II: DND/NYC in Quarantine
Mice & Murder: Wind in the Willows/Sherlock Holmes
Misfits & Magic: What if Americans went to Hogwarts?
The Seven: John Hughes/DND but WOMEN
Shriek Week: Cryptid Dating Sim
A Starstruck Odyssey: Retrofuturistic Space Opera with Buffoons
Coffin Run: Dracula's Followers save Dracula
A Court of Fey & Flowers: Regency/Fairies
Neverafter: Horror/Fairytales
The Ravening War: Game of Thrones/Candyland + Wartime Espionage
Dungeons & Drag Queens: DND meets Drag Queens
Mentopolis: Noir/Inside Out/Retrofuturistic
Burrow's End: Watership Down/DND
if you read through, you'll notice some repetitions--several are in the same d20 created universe. those are:
Tumblr media
those are helpful for understanding the tone/genre chart & the shifts therein, which i borrowed from the wiki:
Tumblr media
now there are some other classifications i would add--thankfully i have my spreadsheet to do just that:
Tumblr media
and that's all i have to say for this time. check out the spreadsheet for a better look at the charts.
EDIT (10/21/23): adding a few more charts for perusal and because i think length/vibe is a fun way to sort these seasons:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sorted by length
the first chart is sorting by length; we have:
short and sweet (4 episode seasons):
misfits & magic
shriek week
dungeons & drag queens
on the salami scale* (6 episode seasons):
Escape from the Bloodkeep
Tiny Heist
Pirates of Leviathan
Coffin Run
The Ravening War
Mentopolis
10/10 would watch again (10 episode seasons)
mice & murder
the seven
a court of fey and flowers
burrow's end
in it for the long haul (17-20 episode seasons/intrepid heroes seasons)
fantasy high
the unsleeping city
a crown of candy
fantasy high sophomore year
the unsleeping city chapter ii
a starstruck odyssey
neverafter
the other chart sorts the seasons by how i would adapt them. sometimes this is based on content. sometimes it's based on gm style. sometimes, it's just the vibe the season gives off as a whole. without further ado:
adaptation styles
feature film (live action):
escape from the bloodkeep
misfits & magic
dungeons & drag queens
these seasons are short enough to fit in a single feature film and not quite long enough for a series. the source material just feels more live action to me, especially because there are other seasons that just feel more animated. keep in mind there will be a practical effect focus. just imagine the balloon elf. cartoon logic, live action movie.
feature film (animated):
tiny heist
pirates of leviathan
mice & murder
mentopolis
burrow's end
a bunch of these are the little guy seasons. you can't tell me you wouldn't want a heist movie with characters voiced by the mcelroys, jess ross, and lily du. pol is a spinoff movie of the fantasy high series.
tv series (live action):
the unsleeping city
the unsleeping city (chapter 2)
a starstruck odyssey
a court of fey and flowers
these are long enough to be series with some depth. tuc is on here because it feels like a superhero series. they're teaming up to save new york, but also really finding the humanity in each other. the funny reason is because finding someone to play ricky matsui is hilarious. also i want to see a kugrash puppet.
aso is on here because it's space opera and watch the gunner channel be bozos in live action? hilarious. i've seen some animatics that are incredible though, so this season could go either way.
acofaf is here because i'd want to see the costume department go ham. bridgerton but fairies? guess what. diverse actors, tons of practical effects, a little raunchy, a little heartbreak, what more could you want.
tv series (animated):
fantasy high
fantasy high sophomore year
the seven (miniseries)
a crown of candy
the ravening war (miniseries)
neverafter
as stated earlier fantasy high is a running animated series with two current spinoffs: one movie (pol) and one miniseries (t7). combination high school slice of life with action/adventure.
acoc is a game of thrones style series--animated to keep the comedy, with trw functioning as a hotd style prequel series. the calorum seasons could easily read live action though, just like aso could be animated.
neverafter is animated, but the style changes throughout the season. maybe they start live action and become animated when they wake up in the new timeline. no change in world physics, no acknowledgement, just a seamless switch. ooh maybe they shift to traditional animation when they're in the lines between.
video games:
shriek week
coffin run
these come down to gm style and also system. shriek week is already a cryptid dating sim. coffin run is crunchy, a little bit horror with a lot of adventuring options to explore.
anyway, i hope you enjoy. check out the spreadsheet if you'd like.
*this is in reference to the adventuring academy episode the new mr. peanut, wherein lou wilson creates a snack rating system for brennan lee mulligan based on a scale of 1-5 almonds. exceeding the 1-5, i.e. reaching 6, means you go to the salami scale.

i would really fucking love a dimension 20 campaign set in Madeleine L’Engle’s Wrinkle in Time universe. soooooo many cool creatures, beings, worlds, and thematic elements to explore! PCs could be human, an angel with a nonhuman form, a creature — there’s so much! the campaign could be macroscopic like the first book (defeating a giant entity) or microscopic (re-synchronizing the minds of the tiny apparatus in a sick boy’s chromosomes). I just love L’Engle’s approach to conflict and wonder and I think it would work really well with the way Brennan always has love be an active metaphysical force in his actual play stories, and it would have great source material for an Updating in the same way that the Starstruck comics were re-vitalized by A Starstruck Odyssey

Dimension 20: A Starstruck Odyssey Timeline
Put together a timeline with source episodes for my own use, figure other people might find it useful. Includes some events from the Starstruck comics for comparison. Ages are approximate, since we mostly get stuff like 'early thirties' and as a setting Starstruck has multiple ways to age faster or slower than normal. A year is equal to two cycles.
Timeline:
53 AE - B.O.B. Griivarr’s Simple Recipe for Happiness
58 AE - Brucilla's Galactic Girl Guide adventures
88 AE - Erotica Ann launch
93 AE - Galatia 9 born
120? AE - Norman born
(Episode 1: "seeing the like 50 year old version of himself")
134 AE - Amercadian Space Brigade Neutral Zone Fiasco
141 AE - Rec Station Rampage
142 AE - Trial of Brucilla the Muscle
156 AE - Phoebus Incident
160? AE - Gunnie born
(Episode 1: "early thirties")
160? AE - Zortch born
(Episode 14: "15 or 16 cycles old when my grandparents got approached about the revolution")
172 AE - Margaret born
(Episode 1: "24 year old entrepreneurial business woman")
175? AE - UFTP supports Rubian V revolution. Zortch’s psychic powers awaken
(Episode 2: "this moon that was bought by UFTP you know, maybe 40 or 50 cycles back")
(Episode 14: Same part as Zortch's age above)
180 AE - Skip frozen
(Episode 6: "it was like 40 cycles ago")
198 AE - Gusty Vines incident, Norman’s brain surgery
(Episode 6: "operation date, AnarchEra 198")
(Episode 10: "it wasn't more than a cycle, maybe a couple cycles after that, that you took your pension")
200 AE - Barry Battalion Founded
(Episode 1: "We are approaching the 200th cycle of AnarchEra")
205 AE - Gnosis development begins
(Episode 4: "that was made probably about 15, 16 cycles ago")
208 AE - Margaret joins UFTP
(Episode 5: "You've been working there for six years")
217 AE - Slaughter of the Barry Battalion
(Episode 6: "Three and a half, and about three cycles ago is when the slaughter of the Barry Battalion happened")
219 AE - Gnosis escapes containment
(Episode 6: "a little less than a cycle ago")
220 AE - Present

three episodes in I'm enjoying a starstruck odyssey except, in the grand tradition of cyberpunk dystopias, watching characters have to grapple with capitalism and disability praxis is stressful as FUCK part of the reason I don't do a lot with money in my dnd games is because money is a source of stress for me in real life so I don't want to deal with it in a fictional sphere....and most of the d20 seasons just don't care about money in any real way but aso is. yowza. fucking repo out here I'm screaming I'm suffering I'm stressing

Tournament Two: Round One - Bracket Three [Dimension 20 NPC of All Time]
The Junkmother vs Em
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Propaganda under the cut
The Junkmother - She/Her
Campaign: A Starstruck Odyssey
Who is she?
The Junkmother is an android scavenger beneath Uncle Bob's Fantanimalland. The Junkmother was either built as a joke or experiment, she escaped and killed her creators. She eventually made her way to the tunnels far beneath Uncle Bob's Fantanimalland.
Why is she the NPC of All Time?
"MY FUCKING BELOVED EVER"
She is a scavanger and a protector of discontinued androids, helping them not to be lost to time. She really is a wonderful character.
Submitted by: WON HER SUDDEN DEATH MINI-ROUND
Em - She/Her
Campaign: The Unsleeping City
Who is she?
Em, also known as the Angel of the Waters, is an iron statue atop the Bethesda Fountain. She guards and protects the waters in and around New York City, a source of neutral divine magic. The water of her fountain is magical and has healing properties.
Why is she the NPC of All Time?
She is a literal angel. She's so incredibly sweet and powerful and lets be honest we were all rooting for her and Sofia to get together.

i feel like at some point i just ought to give up and accept that i probably won’t be able to keep up with or even finish most d20 seasons even if i kinda gas them up when they’re announced or have watched most of them already but i am still really excited about a starstruck odyssey LMAO. i’ve even been immersing myself in the source material. waiting for good character art to come out so i can try and draw some things with the vibe of kaluta’s beautiful covers
