On January 1, 1804, Haitians declared independence from French colonial rule. Soup joumou is something that only the rich and colonizers were allowed. Scotch Bonnet Pepper seed is now available at www.trueloveseeds.com! Scotch Bonnet Peppers are an extremely hot habanero that is particularly important in West African and Caribbean cuisine, where it is used in hot sauces and jerk chicken and many other ways. Named for its shape, which looks like a tam o' shanter hat from Scotland. Our strain is red in color. This variety was selected and grown for our catalog by Leah Penniman and her co-farmers at Soul Fire Farm because Leah's family is Haitian and this ingredient is an essential part of her beloved Soup Joumou. Soup Joumou also features Caribbean Pumpkin and is eaten in celebration and commemoration of January 1, 1804, the date of Haiti's liberation from France. 100,000-350,000 Scoville Heat Units. Soul Fire Farm remits 100% of their proceeds from the sales of their seeds to the Stockbridge Munsee Band of the Mohican Nation. #seedkeeping #scotchbonnet #soupjoumou https://www.instagram.com/p/CLa1SbiAiFx/?igshid=qdyliqctuias

When we learned of the story of Soup Joumou it brought so much delight to our lives. Not only because we grew up eating this soup daily and without realizing the story behind it but we are so enchanted with the idea of our forebears after fighting for their lives and independence thinking of ways to solidify their sovereignty. Taking a soup that the French considered only permissible for the elites to consume and not allowed for enslaved Africans to eat, it brings me joy with every mouthful to remember a group of “illiterate, primitive, savage” people rose up and decimated one of the largest Europeans forces of it’s time. And then supported the Dominican Republic to overthrow Spain twice, and went on to support other latin nations. Our hearts fill with joy to know in our blood runs the passion and dedication to fight for liberation. Our liberation doesn’t look like what we battled in the 1700’s and yet we still are fighting to decolonize, dismantle and disrupt the system that laid the ground work for this racialized framework of subjugation we currently live in. So as we sit, meditate and give thanks to our ancestors knowing they fortify us to unravel what has been created. We eat, we bring forth love and we honor our people who loved us above their own lives. When we eat Soup Joumou we are remembering the power we carry within ourselves and in community. Ayibobo!! Jwaye Soup Joumou *Happy Soup Joumou*
Tumblr media
Nice seeing you again reader 😊😊. Whether you're one to celebrate it or not, make a big fuss about it or not, I'm sure you're appreciative to see a new year and focus on better positivity for this one to lay foundations for a better lifetime to live through.
Now, I know what you're saying, "you must really like food to be starting off your new post with food Mr. E. Especially to start off the year, huh?" Well, to your question yes I do like food 😁🤣. But there's also a specific reason I'm starting with this dish that may not seem like much.
The pictured dish is called soup joumou, as this entry's title reads. It's a hearty butternut squash soup that also has beef, potatoes, carrots, cabbage, yams, malanga (which is a rooted vegetable), turnips, celery and a few other things, that's very hearty and fulfilling enjoyed by Haitians regardless where they're to mark the date when Haiti gained its independence from France.
To give you some knowledge, once upon a time Haiti was under France's control, and slaves banded together to have an uprising whilst being led by a former slave named Toussaint Louverture. The battle started on Monday the 21st of February 1791 until Sunday 1st of January 1804 where it's known as the official date to be recognized as Haitian independence day & the soup is consumed.
A little extra piece of knowledge, in some Haitian households, ironically enough, ritually and faithfully certain families would have the soup when they start off their day. Of course the soup would most often be cooked prepped up the day prior to be better enjoyed on Sunday. Now, I know if you're not Haitian, don't have knowledge of Haitian cuisine, or just know you have breakfast differently, to consume that as breakfast on Sundays would be common without a shock to some.
The soup itself can be eaten alone as the picture shows. Though, there are those who prefer to enjoy it with fresh, or warm baton Moïse (Moses stick). It's the pic shown below, which in a way is the Haitian baguette, if you may. Definitely hits different and better than sliced bread [not sorry 🤣🤣] and it definitely fills you up

The richer part of the soup, and how far it extends especially, is that Haitians who are known for being all over this planet (to give you an idea, I know of a Haitian family in Aussie/Australia) & they have their soup on the 1st. By the same breath, Haitians even being in Canada, USA, Belgium, even the UK enjoy it. What's most interesting, and a profound thing to account is how other cultures, or other people OF other cultures, especially of a certain country, scout for soup also. I know this year of a few folks I've met the year prior, were on the hunt like us for some good soup. Some were even given by different people. The soup is also a great way to bond with folks, and brings so many things together.
Until my next post. Peace, love & positivity. Ayibobo ✊✊✊

Bòn Fèt Endepandans epi Bòn Ane! 1804-2022 Happy Haitian Independence Day! 🇭🇹 Joumou or giraumon soup is a traditional Haitian pumpkin soup made with vegetables, plantains, meat, pasta and spices. It is a celebratory dish, deeply rooted in Haitian identity, and its preparation promotes social cohesion and belonging among communities. Originally reserved for slave owners, Haitians took ownership of the soup when they gained independence from France, turning it into a symbol of their newly acquired freedom and an expression of their dignity and resilience. It is made from giraumon, a variety of pumpkin once cultivated by the indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, and is prepared and consumed specifically on the first of January – Haiti’s Independence Day – when it constitutes the first meal of the year. It also serves as traditional Sunday breakfast. The preparation of Joumou soup is a family and community affair: women manage the overall activities, children help to prepare the ingredients, artisans make the aluminium pots and other utensils used to prepare the soup, and farmers work the land to harvest the vegetables. Today, several variations of the soup can be found in Caribbean and Latin American cuisines. #soupjoumou #libertysoup #soup #freedomsoup #IndependenceDay #culturalheritageofHumanity #CulturalHeritage #humanity #haiti #1804 #Intangibleculturalheritage #unesco #slavery #patrimoinenational #patrimoineinternational #nyfoh #nyfriendsofhaiti2010 #HappyHaitianIndependenceDay #haitiandiaspora #haitianculturalcenternewyork #giraumon #soupgiraumou #squash https://www.instagram.com/touthaiti/p/CYNBr0muNsv/?utm_medium=tumblr

Our Joumou vine is doing quite well and found a home growing on the nursery shade cloth. One of the other plants that’s constantly growing in my garden without me ever having to actually plant it. I guess you can consider this squash, cranberry hibiscus, okra, radishes, culantro, sweet potatoes, and many other edibles as a weed in my yard since they’ve been replanting themselves. I’ll probably add some of these blossoms on top of my independence soup this year. The story goes that Haitian slaves were forbidden from drinking soup joumou. It was a delicacy reserved for their white “masters.” To celebrate Haiti's liberation and kind of say a big FU to our former colonizers *cough 🇫🇷, the soup became a symbol for freedom and is eaten by Haitians and a lot of non-Haitians to celebrate our independence. ・・・ #growninhaiti #decolonize #independence #squash #joumou #vine #agroforestry #nursery #foodforest #edibleweeds #haiti #ayiti #getyoursoupon #soupjoumou #growth #blossoms #organic #nogmos #nopesticides #noherbicides #independence #freedom #stopgentrificationofthecaribbean https://www.instagram.com/p/B6nu06xlOfY/?igshid=7evuharo7d9m
