Sky Burial
a/n: Despite my psuedonym, I've never written anything for SotC before. Title comes from my favorite track of the game. :)
Dawn's light dappled through the leaves. In the grove, his head on her lap. His face, she said, was still a youth's. She found this very amusing, and his discontent more so. He could never be angry with her for long.
Long ago, a great deity was split into pieces and sealed away with a ceremonial sword. The temple erected on the precipice of their world, where night never fell.
Her mother was a priestess, the same as her grandmother. One day, she would undergo the same ceremony.
When the ritual is complete, said Mono, a body is just flesh without a home. We give it back to the elements, to be eaten.
You could leave, he said, only to hear the words aloud. You could travel the world and be free.
She laughed, soft and lilting. Would you become a priest?
Wander bit his tongue. His mouth glanced the edge of her palm.
The old story, connected by grief. If he spoke the words clawing at his throat, she would bid him no more.
A day in the Forbidden Lands passed in the span of an era. The sun remained in the sky, motionless. The need for sleep evaded him, and Agro. There were still plenty of salamanders and sour fruit in the weald. He needn't stay long enough to exhaust the land of its resources.
Dreams came to him, in the space between consciousness and the invasion of Dormin's soul into his own, forcing him into darkness. No broken bones. The devil's luck.
Blood in his body subsuming into tarry ichor. Perhaps, by the end, there would be nothing of the man Mono once loved.
Another idol crumbled. Shadows in the shape of men flocking to him, scattering at the first sign of waking. The old pull of the earth, ancient and intangible, demanded reverence.
He approached the altar, scattering the doves. His clothes and skin inundated with grime. He could have stroked back her hair and pressed his lips to her cool brow. She would wake soon enough.

I have this idea.
It's playing with the idea of CF!setleth but not in the way of him betraying Rhea and joining Edelgard.
I was thinking like....it's years after the war has ended and Byleth is traveling around. Since her CF solo end just talks about how she keeps on her "destined path" by fighting TWSITD to bring peace to Fodlan. So I was thinking she's traveling around and is in Deidru and catches a glimpse of something green.
Which obviously makes her tense up and she quickly turns but sees nothing. Part of her hopes she somehow sees Seteth and Flayn again but at the same time doesn't because she doesn't know how she could face them now.
For her heart beats and her hair isn't green anymore.
But she stays a few days longer and is exploring the market area when she sees it again but this time sees a hooded figure walking quickly away. Without really thinking about it she runs after them and lo and behold it's Seteth.
It's not exactly the warmest reunion since the last time they saw each other she was invading the Monastary; and was telling him to flee if he wanted him and Flayn to live. And like they just stare at each other.
And he's like "so it is true....The Goddess has forsaken us all." Or something snippy lol Which obviously makes Byleth upset bc rn she doesn't know any truth about the children of The Goddess and just knows the propaganda.
Though she will never admit of the nightmares she has after stabbing Rhea with the SOTC and hearing the woman brokenly gasp "mother". Just like the dream she had of a similar woman holding the sword and calling if mother.
She refuses to ponder it because why admit that maybe you don't have all the facts?
But she's like "No she hasnt" and he just stares at her before turning away and she grabs him not understanding why she feels panic bc she KNOWS if he goes now she will never see him again as long as she lives.
And like I really wanna capture the feeling of "could of been" "in another life" regret and consequences. Loving someone and they love you back but it can never be bc they will never forgive you.
I dont have much thought out outside the "reunion" but they like talk to each other of the course of a few weeks. Seteth tho is even more cagey with her and even Flayn is keeping distance. But somehow she learns the truth about crests and relics.
But I also wanna enraptured these feelings in these qoutes
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like also dont want it totally disregarding Byleths choice but I think the consequences of giving up her "family" whether she understood or not is like interesting? And also to like give Seteth and Flayn ability to understand her but for her to understand THEM.
And I still want it to be romantic but that achingly tragic kind. If that makes sense? Like I have a lotta thoughts but I think it'll only just stay like....thoughts since I don't really have the writing abilities or delicacy to write something like this. But I'm like obsessed with it lol.
I do know how it ends. Seteth and Flayn leave Fodlan maybe they contacted Claude and finally gave him tbe church secrets so be could give them asylum? And just ends with Byleth moving forward bc she chose her path. But the regret and love stays.
Maybe even ends with her giving him the ring as a goodbye. Or something lol
It's a very scatterbrained idea I know.

So something I’ve figured out while playing .flow yesterday for the first time is that I think openworlds benefit from having no real mechanical meat to them. Yes there are effects in Yume Nikki and its fangames that are needed to unlock the endings or progress to certain areas, but in general a large portion of the map is open to you from the get go and 90% of everything you collect is useless mechanically.
Then there’s SotC which has perhaps my favorite openworld and which has...Basically nothing? It’s just big areas. There’s lizards and fruits which will increase your stamina and health, but the game is designed in such a way that you can beat it just fine enough without the upgrades. And even then most of the things you can look at that aren’t colossi stomping grounds don’t have these mechanical rewards.
And then there’s LSD: Dream Emulator. LSD has no mechanics beyond walking around and random effects going off. There’s nothing to collect, nothing to raise, nothing to really even do. You simply go about your merry little way and look at things until you grow bored of it. For many this is almost immediately because there is just so much nothing to the game. For many others this results in days spent wandering around the game and frequently returning to it over the years.
The sheer nothingness of the exploration on a mechanical standpoint is, I think, what makes these worlds appeal to me so much more than other openworlds. Because there’s nothing for me to focus on instead. I don’t have a Ubisoft checklist, I don’t have shrines to beat, and I don’t have minibosses to hunt down. I can’t reduce the world to my running to the next interesting thing to complete to make numbers go up because there isn’t really any point to doing that or there isn’t any way to doing it to begin with. All I’m left with are vibes and if I like the vibes I’ll stay for a good long while and just look at things.
If I’m given mechanical incentives to explore though? Eventually the world gets reduced to “Travel time between me and my next bit of numerical progress”. This even happened to Elden Ring once I realized how the map points you to places that are likely minidungeons. The Lands Between became much less an expansive place I looked carefully at and enjoyed exploring simply to exploring and more a series of pretty backdrops to my picking up new things and gaining new levels. By the time I got to places like the Altus Plateau I was primarily just running from one area where a dungeon may be to the next. With a few places like Leyndell or the Haligtree really giving me pause because OH PRETTY.
In Yume Nikki this doesn’t happen though because it can’t really. Yes I’ll grab the bike and knife first but other than that I just kind of wander about and any enjoyment I have is based entirely around my finding it amusing to wander about. And .flow’s similar. I’m happy I have the pipe now since that’s the knife equivalent and some things are blocked off by npcs but like. Overall I’ve just been wandering around and looking at things and vibing.
There is, I think, a value in nothing.

a meditation on meditation
I've been thinking a lot about meditation and how the state of being we aspire to achieve through this practice is essentially a dog in a big backyard. "There is no thinking, there is nothing to figure out." (Sotce.) I really reallyyyy love that. Except, this idea is kind of flawed. Meditation brings us from a pre-rational state of mind to post-rational, and a dog has always been and will remain at pre-rational for the rest of its life. I can't fully say I know what it feels like to be either (a dog or someone coming out of meditation) because I feel like my mind is always buzzing about. If you split my head open, you will only find bees. I am always thinking, trying to grasp at thoughts and watching ideas slip through my fingers before I feel I've completed them enough to get them archived. I like to view my mind like a storage unit; a messy one, in deep need of cleaning. I often watch myself procrastinate and delay emotions, pushing them aside and telling myself I'd unpack them later. Now these emotions sit in a box, stacked under box after box after box, shoved away in the corners of my brain. I forget about them, but sometimes I get earthquakes and these boxes come spilling out all at once, and there is just so much mess made that it becomes too much for me to handle. Why do I do this? I want to learn to let things come and go like the Buddhist talk about, I want to be comfortable with letting emotions flow into and through me like streams of water.
My solution: meditation. I'm not the best at this, I will admit. I try my best to focus on my breathing, the sensations of what my limbs touch, the feel of my clothes draped on me, all things that I never notice. My body twitches, I feel like ghosts are tickling my skin. As hard as I try to stay in this state, murmurs of my thoughts start to creep in. I remember everything I haven't done, everything I have done. I'm not exactly sure who told me to do this but they said that to combat this, we should observe the thoughts that come and go like cars on a busy street, whizzing through and carrying passengers. When I think of meditation this way, I see myself from an external point of view, detached from the scene itself. I watch the cars pass me by but I don't force them out or make them disappear, I just observe them from a distance and eventually they will travel far enough that they blink out of sight. I like this way of thinking, but recently I've been visualizing something else. I've always loved swimming and I'm brought back to the times when I was a kid in a pool and I'm trying my hardest to stay down under the water. I empty all the air from my lungs, I focus on weighing myself down. The effort consumes my mind, I can't think of anything else but the feeling of water all around me. Alternatively, I also like to lay on my back on the surface of the water. I have my limbs all spread out and I try to be weightless like a dead man who's been pushed off a bridge. I stay as still as possible because the slightest movement can pull me down and I don't want to be swallowed by the water. All I feel is the tickle of splashes on my neck, the strange feeling of water outlining my body, the way the surface of the aqua looks like it carved me out. It’s like I’m halfway through a portal, split between two realms. I suppose this is a meditative state in it of itself. Anyway, when I'm meditating I picture myself on the ocean floor. I have sunken and it is not a struggle to stay here at this kind of depth. I'm looking up and all I see is the movement of water, the crystalline lines that make me think of cathedrals. I watch sunlight pierce through the blue and observe the rays dance on my skin and illuminate this strange alien world. In my mind, I can breathe here and nothing is heavy. I see my thoughts like bubbles instead of cars. This way, I know that they won't stop. They come out of me and I watch them rise, some large and some tiny, but they always go all the way up and pop in the surface, I like to watch them all the way through. I like this better because bubbles are temporary, cars are not. When they pop, it tells me that it's over. They are not mine to deal with anymore.
Will I ever know peace like a mindless dog in a backyard? I believe this is the closest I can get.
