Okay, I've got a handful of miscellaneous recs, and then ten recs for Victoria Goddard's Nine Worlds series, which I'm putting under a cut because at least two of you I know are still reading and the recs are full of spoilers for At the Feet of the Sun. Enjoy!

The Long Way Home by itsnatalie (DCU, gen)

With Jason tentatively back in the Batfamily, things are going pretty well for him--except for the whole thing with Tim. But who gives a shit about Tim Drake? But when Jason and Tim are pulled into a frightening race for their lives inside a labyrinth that's out to kill them, they may have to look past their differences just to stay alive. Maybe along the way, they'll discover they aren't as different as they thought, and family comes in many different forms.

Spectacular in every aspect: the horror, the action, the hurt/comfort, the brotherly devotion underlying their swarm of issues, and the ending. I really can't rec this one highly enough.

Late Night, North Station by raitala (Untamed, Wangxian)

Lan Zhan finds A-Yuan lost in the railway station. He maybe finds more than he bargained for. Some mornings you leave for the office and come back with a son (and possibly a husband too).

Sooooo sweet, with a lovely autistic LWJ POV. The sequel is still a WIP but is great so far.

Beginning at the End by WerewolvesAreReal (Temeraire, Granby/Little)

In many ways it seems that John's life revolves around William Laurence.

Lovely character study trilogy with Granby sorting out his unrequited thing for Laurence and his ongoing thing with Little.

Kip Mdang returns to Solaara, hardly confident that the Imperial Service will take him back but sure that there is no place for him in the Vangavaye-ve. The City of Cities is still expanding from the backwater village it was before the Fall; the work of reconstruction continues but it is no longer a simple crisis. In the Palace the big political beasts are circling for position under the newly awakened Emperor. Despondent and determined to bury himself in work, Cliopher finds his former patron disapproving and the new Master of Offices openly hostile. But he is still a fifth degree secretary, and some problems are easier to solve when you feel that you have little left to lose… and don't care which enemies you make along the way.

Amazing!!! Basically a novel-length series digging into the difficult period between Kip returning and Kip becoming the Hands of the Emperor, with tons of bureaucracy and corruption and competence porn and of course, his devotion to His Radiancy and building a better government. Also features wonderful OCs, worldbuilding, a really horrifying bit of magic, some unexpected allies, humor, and Kip being just a really lovely (and determined, and traumatized) person.

Pikabe has fucked over his army career (and maybe his whole life) by refusing illegal orders to commit a war crime and kinda sorta leading a mutiny (he was cleared of wrongdoing, but still, mutiny). He’s been shuffled out of the way to some random base where everyone gives him the side-eye (because mutiny) and he’s never going to see anyone from his old unit ever again. (Which doesn’t matter, his former lieutenant’s also-fucked-over life is none of his business, whatever, it’s fine it’s fine.) Then he gets a mysterious package and a mysterious Solaaran visitor who might have an idea about turning things around (a suggestion, even).

Fun possible backstory for Pikabe; part of a series that I haven't read in full yet but it stands alone.

Extraordinary vs Ordinary

so

i had originally intended to ramble for a while about how Dazai and Dostoy are both mega-geniuses able to make 100+ backup plans for their backup plans in case their first backup plan failed and then one of them whips out an uno reverse card to counter the other’s royal flush after one of them triggered the other’s trap card because someone played a blue-eyes white dragon against the other’s mega mewtwo EX and one of them only needs one more energy point to use keqing’s elemental burst as long as they have enough elemental dice to prevent the other from tapping enough lands to place a black lotus card

BUT i found something better to talk about thanks to some BSD Discord server members who pointed out some things from Crime & Punishment that coincide with what Dazai told Sigma in chapter 105, as well as an interesting theory that Dostoy’s ability only works on non-ability users. i’m not going to go too in-depth with the Dostoy ability theory since it’s already been done (not sure by who or where, sadly) and i don’t want to seem like i’m copying them, but it was worth mentioning before i get into my analysis

and also a little ‘side theory’ about Sigma’s involvement in the whole mess and why Dazai seems both wiling and reluctant to talk to Sigma while they’re escaping

🔺spoilers for chapters 105.5 and 105, minor spoilers for Dazai’s Entrance Exam, and very very minor spoilers Dostoyevsky’s Crime & Punishment🔻

So what is a ‘smart’ character?

I’m just going to talk about this briefly this because Dazai’s dialogue from chapter 105 addresses one of the problems I have with his character. It’s also the only time (that I can recall) Dazai has straight up called out his own intelligence. What’s more, he admits that he’s not above an average human, he simply observes and analyses more than an average human would. I don’t honestly know how to feel about this because we already have Ranpo, who genuinely uses deduction and analysis to solve mysteries. We also get to know Ranpo’s thought process during his deductions, since we’re either given his internal dialogue or he explains his methods of coming to a conclusion to another character. This is important in developing and writing ‘smart’ characters, because we get to know why they’re ‘smart’ and how their ‘smarts’ works, for lack of a better explanation. Ranpo is an example of a well written smart character in BSD.

Dazai and Dostoy are examples of… Less well written smart characters.

Obviously I can’t say that they’re not smart, because they certainly are, but the problem is we don’t really know how or why. Dazai’s 'smarts' could be attributed to his time in the Mafia under Mori’s teaching, since we learn in chapter 30 that Mori taught Dazai about war strategies and other miscellaneous things that all good crime bosses should know about. Y’know, as one does.

One of the reasons I don’t particularly like Dazai’s character is because we could be getting a similar treatment towards his thought process like we do for Ranpo, but we just don’t because his character is supposed to be more mysterious and unknown. That’s well and good and all, and has been done before in other mangas like Classroom of the Elite with Ayanokoji or Tomodachi Game with Yuuichi, BUT with those two we still eventually get to learn the hows and whys of their ‘smartness’ after the fact. With Dazai and Dostoy for that matter we kind of just, don’t really get to know. We’re left guessing why and how he knew this or that, or why he’s doing certain things certain ways or how on earth he could possibly predict this or that, etc. With Dostoy this is slightly more forgivable considering he is an antagonist and therefore we aren't really supposed to know everything, but a least a little explanation would be nice...

Well, in chapter 105, I suppose we get a very Dazai-esque explanation of why he’s smart…

No such thing as ‘superhuman’, apparently.

I think a lot of the time, we as readers attribute Dazai and Dostoy’s intelligence as just a product of them being more than ordinary humans. They’re the only two characters who feel ostracized for being ‘too intelligent’, and neither of them can have normal conversations because they can predict what the other person will say like some kind of Oda and Gide situation but without the precognition abilities.

However, Dazai straight up denies that he’s above average. In fact, he tells Sigma that there is no such thing as ‘average’ and ‘superhuman’, as no human are truly greater or lesser than another. This quote became extremely important to me when a member of the BSD Discord pointed out something from Dostoyevsky’s Crime & Punishment…

The main character, Raskolnikov, believes that people are divided into two categories; ‘extraordinary’ and ‘ordinary’. ‘Extraordinary’ humans were allowed to break certain laws, so long as they had a goal in mind that will benefit humanity as a whole. Raskelnikov goes on to claim that if these ‘extraordinary’ people had to sacrifice ‘ordinary’ people in order to reach their goals, that they could do so, but they couldn’t just kill randomly for no real reason.

In BSD, ‘extraordinary’ people could be equated to ability users, and ‘ordinary’ people is everyone else with no abilities. Another way of seeing it would be ‘smart’ characters and then everyone else, but there’s really only 3 or 4 ‘smart’ characters in BSD, so I think it’s more accurate to view it as ability users versus regular people.

Dostoy, similar to the main character of the novel which his ability is named after, believes that there is a such thing as ‘extraordinary’ and ‘ordinary’ humans. This is where the theory that his ability only works on non-ability users comes from, since the main character of the novel believes that ‘extraordinary’ people can kill (or sacrifice) ‘ordinary’ people, meaning ability users can kill non-ability users so long as they have a goal that will benefit humanity. Dostoy believes that ridding the world of ability users will benefit humanity, therefore legitimizing his reason to kill others. This is also doubled down on with the evidence that Dostoy has only ever killed non-ability users (Karma, and policemen) with his ability. When Nikolai touches him, nothing happens. He also manhandles the time-stopping ability user in the prison in chapter 105.5 and nothing happens, and he even goes so far as to get a gun to kill her with. This theory definitely has some solid legs to stand on.

Dazai, on the other hand, believes that this difference doesn’t exist. No human is above average, and therefore no human has the ‘privilege’ to kill others to further their goals. This is probably something he developed after he left the Mafia, for obvious reasons… i’m still sobbing a little

The fact that this is something he so readily tells Sigma, compared to how he speaks to every other character, shows that Dazai has something planned for Sigma in particular. He’s never mentioned this idea of ‘superhuman’ and ‘average human’ to anyone else in the story, especially in regards to himself. He admits that he’s just an average human, no better than Sigma or any other human in terms of ability or intelligence, he simply uses his average intelligence differently than others. I think it’s important to keep in mind that Dazai said this to Sigma, the character that’s been used and discarded by Dostoy. Sigma’s expression after Dazai tells him this is evidence of its importance. He seems almost sad or jealous, in a way that says “how could you possibly think that”, since Sigma thinks that Dazai and Dostoy are practically the same, especially in terms of intelligence. Sigma even initially believed that Dazai plans on doing the same thing to him that Dostoy has—using him for his ability and then discarding him. It’s actually exactly what he says in the next chapter, he says “I couldn’t believe that”, and tells Dazai that he is ‘superhuman’ because he defeated Dostoy.

I also think it’s interesting that Dazai calls Sigma a replacement for Kunikida.

Now, obviously Dazai doesn’t mean ‘replacement’ literally, I think he means that Sigma is replacing the motivation that Kunikida gives Dazai to do his work. Dazai even tells Sigma that he chose him to help the Agency in the long run by using Sigma’s ability to learn Dostoy’s plans. I feel like there’s really only one reason why Dazai would bring up the Agency here, and go so far as to mention that he’s on the Agency’s payroll… I think he wants to get Sigma into the Detective Agency. Why? Because he’d be protected under both the Agency’s name and its members, and the Skilled Business Permit and Fukuzawa’s ability as well, meaning Sigma would be able to use his ability as he wishes, and he wouldn’t have to worry about others using him for his ability and then getting rid of him. Dazai also becomes oddly reluctant to speak all of a sudden when Sigma asks him what the second reason for choosing him was, simply saying that Dostoy and Nikolai would’ve killed Sigma after the prison events to prevent him from talking. I think that, again, the reason why Dazai doesn’t elaborate further may be because he plans to give Sigma an entrance exam of some kind, so he doesn't want to say too much since Sigma is smart enough to figure something like that out if given the chance. I’ll talk more about this later because it took an exorbitant amount of time to read too many Bible verse analyses as a person who knows absolutely nothing about any of that stuff.

This battle of beliefs between Dazai and Dostoy will eventually come down to who is more willing to make sacrifices (go figure). Dazai was willing to sacrifice Chuuya in an attempt to kill Dostoy, which failed, possibly on purpose or possibly not. It’s hard to tell, considering Dazai should’ve definitely accounted for Chuuya being able to use gravity manipulation one way or another to escape the room. I think Dazai was trying to test how well Dostoy could utilize Chuuya, but that’s not what I’m here to theorize about. Dostoy’s sacrifice, I think, is a few different things. First, it’s Sigma considering the poor guy is currently trapped in the elevator with Dazai that’s filling with water. Secondly, Dostoy, as defined by his own beliefs as ‘extraordinary’, is allowed to kill ‘ordinary’ people so long as it benefits his goal, which benefits humanity in the long run. However, Dostoy kills an ability user, who could be considered another ‘extraordinary’ person. This prevents Dazai from communicating with Ango further. But, it doesn’t change the fact that he killed someone that wasn’t ‘ordinary’ just for the sake of stopping Dazai from communicating with the outside. However, Dazai defines himself as ‘ordinary’ because he doesn’t believe that there’s a difference, so does that technically mean Dostoy is given the right to kill him to further his own goals? Who knows.

Depending on who you ask, one might say that Dostoy’s ultimate goal of ridding the world of all ability users is more beneficial to humanity than whatever Dazai is doing. Others (and most of us readers) would argue that Dazai escaping and reuniting with the ADA would be more beneficial because they’re trying to stop the DOA from using One Order. However, there’s 2 other ‘extraordinary’ people to account for here.

Sigma and Chuuya

Chuuya is… A vampire? A human again? Under the influence of Dostoy similar to Hawthorne? Who the hell knows anymore. However, he probably doesn’t give a dick diddly fuck about whether there’s humans who are above average and others who are just average. He didn’t even consider himself as human in general for a while in the first place, so he probably has views similar to Dazai’s. But considering Dazai’s betrayal of Chuuya and soukoku’s bond of trust, I’m not too sure Chuuya is going to want to help Dazai anymore.

Sigma, however, might actually be the centerpiece around which the prison arc ends. He’s a wildcard—he no longer belongs in the DOA, his casino is gone, and the government would probably just use him for his ability like they did Mushitaro. I think Dazai is more painfully aware of this than anyone else, because not only has he both witnessed and experienced Mori use and discard mafioso (like Oda), but he also picked up Atsushi when the boy was wanted on the black market, by the government, and had gotten thrown out of the orphanage. Sigma is essentially Atsushi 2.0 in terms of circumstances, and he’s essential in Dazai’s plans for getting information on Dostoy’s and the DOA’s goals.

Going back to Dazai’s plans for Sigma, I think that Sigma is going to be responsible for either finding a way to escape the elevator, or at least a feat equal to that considering the requirements of the entrance exam to get into the Agency. I don’t think it’s going to be another Kyouka situation, since Sigma hasn’t done anything wrong and has been a victim of circumstance since he was created three years ago, but I think it’s going to be similar to either Dazai’s own entrance exam, or Atsushi entrance exam. Here’s my reasoning:

1. Sigma has to prove that he’s going to help the Agency without betraying them. His distrust of Dazai and unease about the Agency is something that Dazai is surely aware of, and knowing that, he’s probably going to put Sigma in a situation where he has to prove whether his alliances are still with Dostoy or if he’s going to try his chances with the Agency and Dazai. Or maybe Dazai might use Sigma to trick Dostoy into thinking he won, similar to how Kunikida “shot” Dazai under the pretense that he could’ve been the Azure Messenger, only to reveal that Kunikida used a gun made with his ability so the bullet would be nullified when it hit Dazai in order to trick the real Azure Messenger. Maybe Dazai is going to have Sigma do something to trick Dostoy into thinking he won?

2. Sigma currently has nowhere to go after this arc ends, really. Similar to how Atsushi has nowhere to go in the beginning of the story, Dazai mentions that he has an employment opportunity for Atsushi but doesn’t tell him where. Dazai has done the opposite with Sigma, mentioning that Dazai works for the Agency and is on its payroll even while he’s in prison, but doesn’t say anything about Sigma being allowed to join the Agency. However, Sigma does begin to contemplate what the Agency is, and the fact that Dazai isn’t using the Agency, nor is the agency using Dazai, unlike all of the experiences Sigma has had up to this point. Atsushi’s situation was similar in that he wasn’t wanted in the orphanage, and no one else seemed willing to help him because of the Tiger. But Dazai was different, and he helped Atsushi find a place to belong with the Agency. I think Dazai could be taking a similar approach with Sigma here, since he’s basically another orphan. And being on the side that protects the orphaned, is just a bit more wonderful, right? right T^T

Trial by Ordeal

Now, I’m not necessarily talking about the old trial system in 1100’s England that used trials by ordeals to figure out if someone was lying or telling the truth. I’m talking about the Christian belief that God made humans go through Trials to judge whether or not they were innocent, and if so, they were raised to heaven (since innocent people were supposed to float in water whereas guilty people sunk to the bottom). Dostoy talks about God a decent amount as a part of his character, including in this last chapter when he states that he is ‘a subordinate of God’. He calls Dazai’s trap a Trial by Flood, which is almost the same wording as the Christian Trial by Water that determined whether or not someone was innocent. Dostoy, having survived the trial, now tells Dazai he must go through the same Trial by Flood. I think this is an interesting way to look at it because we all know that both Dazai and Dostoy are guilty of a lot of heinous crimes that would definitely prevent them from being considered innocent, Chuuya as well considering he’s an executive in the Port Mafia, but what about Sigma? As far as we know, he’s never killed anyone. I’d argue he wasn’t responsible for injuring Taneda back at the beginning of the Hunting Dogs arc either, it was probably Nikolai, and Sigma just used his ability on Taneda as instructed. He is, for all intents and purposes, innocent. So, will he be able to make it through this Trial by Water? Saving Dazai, and thereby saving the Agency in the process and completing an entrance exam?

I guess we just have to wait and see.

Oh BOY this was a long one! Thank you for reading and I hope you enjoyed! I apologize if my part about Christianity and the Trials isn’t 100% correct, I had to do a lot of googling and reading to even find information on it, and even then I didn’t really understand any of it as someone who’s definitely not religious lol. I kind of hope we do get to see Sigma get an entrance exam and be given the chance to find a new home with the Agency once all this is over, because he truly deserves it at this point. He’s suffered so much. Just give the man a break pls.

I suppose there’s also a mini theory that sits in the back of my mind sometimes about what would happen if Dazai ever touched the Book or its pages. If Dazai touched, and thereby nullified, the page that Sigma is written on, would he cease to exist…? Does Sigma exist in the Beast universe, or would he not because Dazai has touched the Book in that universe??? So many questions and no answers in sight it seems. Also, what would happen if Dazai ends up dying at the end of this prison arc, either with or without Dostoy also dying?? Would he give Chuuya the Odasaku treatment and tell him to join the Agency? Would Fukuzawa’s ability work on Corruption????? Now that’s something I really wanna know.

• okay so first off, i know this isn't really a head cannon but james gunn confirmed that the visor in vig's suit is prescription and idk i just love that fact

• i'm like 99.99% sure he has a playlist for when he's on patrol and makes chris listen to it with him

• also, i think he'd have the same wired earphones from like 2014 that came with his iphone 6

• adrian's favorite candy is probably skittles or m&ms because of the fun colors (sometimes he likes to sort them if he's feeling a bit bored)

• i dunno why but i feel like adrian loves star wars and has since he was little (and also has all the og trilogy movies on vhs)

hey! this is “not choker smol bean” anon and maybe i was too judgemental please tell me more about choker so i can tell if you were right or not

Choker is a menace. Like, a lot of people love him, lots of others HATE HIM. I already briefly talked about him in a previous ask, but to summarize, he is a natural disaster. he's just some guy but like, one of those really chaotic guys. He's actually roommates with Squl right now despite the fact that they met on the battlefield and hated each other's guts above all else initially. I already posted this picture of him like last week but i'll post it again (i dont have a lot of pictures of him and i JUST made this updated design)

But like, he's kind of a bizarre guy. He tries hard to look really cool and be cool so people take him seriously, but he's actually kind of goofy. He still tries really hard to make people scared of him, and some people are, but most people just roll their eyes when he pulls up. He's a very loud person who makes his presence known and he can be extremely snarky, but he's not really EVIL. At least not yet. Toxic? YES.

He used to be in the orange team, Fire Arrows, but he left after getting frustrated about how casual the matches were and how much less frequent they became while Boba had to deal with exams. To be fair, he was a pretty controversial teammate, with how arrogant and chaotic he was. Generally, he just ended up in the team because Boba has ZERO judge of character, and he has ONLY been a negative influence on her. (He knows how to make molotovs for some reason, and now Boba knows as well.)

Anyway Choker used to be a Dualie Squelchers main, but he recently had a growth spurt that's made dodge rolling super awkward for him, so he looked around for a new weapon and settled on the Squeezer. Though not going to lie, the Annaki Splattershot Nova is looking pretty good... if only because he's like, an Annaki simp and if something's got the logo on it, he's got to own it for the unrivalable (is that a word?) drip. Arguably, he's pretty shallow when it comes to appearances and is really quick to judge if people have atrocious fashion. He got his stage name because his go-to used to be the Annaki Choker Tee, but he began just hoarding and using chokers after getting used to it pretty much regardless of what else hes wearing. Also, his legal name is Tako, and that is SUCH a boring normie name that he would do ANYTHING to make sure Choker is the name that sticks.

As of early 2023, he founded a yellow Turf War team with his friends Squl, Frill and Gill (cool name synergy) and called it Team TOXIC. Because for some reason he thinks toxicity (both in gameplay terms and biological terms) is SUPER cool and metal, and everyone else thinks so too, so. You know. He was also heavily inspired by a guy named Martin who mentored him for a while in late 2022.

What do I mean by "mentored"? Choker is absolutely enamored with the concept of crime and especially banditry. His biggest idols in life are like, Deep Cut, because he knows about their "secret" bandit career. Choker himself comes from a lineage of Octarian pirates, or that's at least what he says, he doesn't have much to back that up. So his resolution throughout his teens has been that he WILL become a master pickpocket and maybe even something more. So once he acquainted with Martin, who's been either a gangster or a criminal of miscellaneous sorts for like 20 years, he was extremely impressed and DEMANDED to stick around to learn from him. (Of course, his teachings aren't a perfect match given that Choker is very naive, and also way taller.)

(hence why this picture exists. choker is MUCH TALLER STILL now.)

Basically, Choker is a chaotic guy, and a menace, and a chronic rulebreaker. And he cares about life being interesting and fun, even if it's at the expense of other people's (or his own!) safety. He's a horrible influence and he is easily influenced by other people who are way worse off than he is. He sustains most of Splatsville's feral shrimp population because he feeds them just out of spite for the signs that say you can't do it. He's set dumpsters on fire because he was bored. He might ruin relationships for fun. He's friends with retired felons because why not.

Like nothing that falls under the label of war crime is something that would ever get joked about unless you're 4chan scum, why is it so commonplace then for the label itself to be used as a joke

Monikers Erased AU

This is a character swap and setting focused AU which revolves around Phoenica being the protagonist instead of Molly.

The story would also be adjusted to focus on a different path of character development. So instead of Molly learning to stand up for herself, we now have Feenie learning to adapt to the wild ecosystem of the world outside her household.

Aesthetics-wise, the story takes place in the early 2000's in a city of vandalised concrete and eye-searing glass, a city from the United States as depicted in older films essentially. The prime inspiration for this AU's setting is oddly enough the music video for 'It's My Life', not much to talk about but I just thought it would be interesting to have a setting similar to how the world seemed in movies during that era.

Characters and Setting

The Salt Rock Connurbation (originally Sweet Jazz City)

The main focus of the plot like in the original story.

(Original Show) Sweet Jazz City Modern Technological & Cultural Hub, Limited Regulations, High levels of Disorganised crime, a relatively un-militarised police force, has a Museum*.

(In this AU) Salt Rock Connurbation A Stagnating Manufacturing Hub, High levels of (some times ridiculous) regulations on all facets of society, Low levels of Organised crime, Heavily Militarised police force, has a Large Black Market* underneath a stadium like concert area.

The city is in a Cold War between the Police and consolidated Crime groups consisting of gangs, biker gangs, foreign mafias and arms dealers; no one shoots, no one gets hurt.

*A museum is a place where antiques and items of interest are sold or given to where it can be displayed openly. A black market is where such items are sold and sourced from both illegally and discreetly.

Phoenica Fleecity (switching with Molly)

After losing both her parents at a young age, the last living member of the Fleecity Family has been 'raised' by the current regent managing the family: an investor and financial manager by the name of Ramsey Murdoch.

Said regent however spends most of his time cultivating his the family's investments than taking active care for his technically adopted daughter; that responsibility falls to the army of servants who pamper Feenie beyond unhealthy levels.

Falls into the criminal underworld after deciding to investigate how is a concert about rocks became the talk of her generation.

Other character switches (summarised, will be elaborated on request or in future posts)

Giovanni switches with Percy. So we have a criminal in a crime group because they believe they can bring law and order from the other side. Meanwhile we have an extroverted cop who most likely abuses the police station's armoury yet is very protective of his subordinates.

Sylvie switches with Howie. Howie would be the maintenance worker who keeps the largest concert setting in the country running (while also keeping darker elements underneath the stage from disrupting his work). Sylvie meanwhile is still an epithet specialised psychologist though he does his 'research' in the crime infested ruins of a former industrial zone (the equivalent of Redwood Run I still have not decided a name for yet).

Mera and Indus switch with Arnold & Bugsy. The former would be leading a small criminal arms dealing group setting up shop near where Sylvie happens to be (at the equivalent of Redwood Run). The latter are a rowdy band from the gang Percy is supposed to bring back into line.

Zora switches places with Naven. The latter is the coalition maker of the criminal underworld and thus may have Russian Mercenaries or other miscellaneous allies from the darker pits of society. The former is the head of the most powerful domestic terror group who keeps the latter under its wing to maintain control over the deadlock between the criminal factions to keep the law enforcers from trying anything, lest they risk of turning the city into a warzone.

Trixie as a character concept is flipped upside down. Instead of a kid deep into the occult, we now have them as part of a secretive order of sorts which is on the other far end from occultism: religious zealotism.

To note, this isn't the typical holier-than-thou faith sect, this is the kind that has actual working holy artifacts locked in underground vaults plus a reserved seat of representation at this world's equivalent of the Vatican or Jerusalem.

Either way, Trixie is still a social outsider. Just that instead of making homemade potions, they'd try to make holy/magical items/relics based on descriptions from a tome they'd only managed 9 seconds of reading before the librarians realise a child should not be able to access that section of the library.

Yoomtah also has her personality flipped. So instead of a hyperenergetic maniac, she tries to seem a calm and relaxed figure. Until she decides to get things done.

Ramsey switches with Martin.

The former is a cunning investor and self proclaimed financial advisor who was brought in to manage the Fleecity finances. After the accident that left Phoenica the only living Fleecity, Ramsey had taken over as 'regent' to protect the integrity of the family and to quell potential power struggles from former Fleecity afiliates. Whether this is an excuse for Ramsey making the prestigious household his personal kingdom or a genuine yet mismanaged attempt at caring for his adopted daughter, is yet to be seen.

Martin meanwhile, is a skilled yet infamous inventor in the entertainment field on the run. A creative mind that is absent half of the time with the hounds of his creditors at his heel.

The Arsene Amullet's equivalent (I haven't thought of a name for it yet) will instead grant an 'untaken' epithet instead of taking it from its user.

Blurb (because I need somewhere to dump story related metaphors)

An innocent sheep unknowingly intrudes into the hunting ground of the savvanah. She however, is not the main course of the impending feast, for the predators prowling about have turned on one another seeking clues to a strange trinket hidden in the waters of an oasis. One of the contenders, a cheetah deprived of her hunting ground, approaches her otherwise prey and makes a preposterous proposal.

Phoenica Fleecity, rich, innocent and naive beyond belief; finds herself lost in the criminal underground. To get herself out of this, she enlists the guidance of a gang leader whom begrudgingly takes the heir to privilege through the den of the disdained. Meanwhile a transaction is carried underway in haste and secrecy, its cargo holding the potential to upset the fickle balance of power between the factions of the underworld and the authorities above. And thus, the first steps on the ladder to hell pulls down with it the complicated webs of the world above, inch by inch.

Just some stuff that's been on my brain about what Inezra likes / has picked up since she started interacting with aliens.

Human Topics

Inezra has been exposed these things to one way or the other, either through conversations with humans, aliens somewhat familiar with them, or as a result of consuming and asking questions about human media. If she remembers anything at all, if only comes out if she can connect it to something relevant in the moment and/or can use that knowledge to make fun of someone.

Christianity, which spiraled into a search that ended up in a deep dive into Christian Fundamentalism and assorted topics. She doesn't care about that part, but she does like the murder and violence in the old testament. Jesus getting nailed to the cross is pretty cool. No clue why humans act so weird about it.

Santa Claus. Why does an old bearded guy go around giving wrigglers presents? Funny that bad kids get coal though.

Pigments. You mean they don't use blood? Like at all? They're out here using artificial sources entirely? Okay, kind of lame but whatever.

Human family structures and relationships. She doesn't really care about the complexities involved in human family trees, and has trouble differentiating between them. It doesn't matter much to her, considering most if not all of the humans she interacts with have dead lusii, families, or both. It does make watching human media suck sometimes. Who is who? Why are they acting like that? Are they related?

The confederate flag. This was briefly explained to her as something humans carry when they're stupid. Why would you fly a flag when you lost that badly?

Crime. For the most part it seems like humans are awfully worried about shit that doesn't matter, like murder, or dismemberment, or maiming to the point where they have insurance for this very thing. Seems weird.

Countries. The fact that there's so many different countries on Earth makes her mad. You guys couldn't figure your shit out and put one person in charge?

American States. Again with the multiple municipalities and boundaries. Why is America not just one big country, or a handful of territories ruled over by the same entity properly. Why do the states have such stupid names? What the fuck is an Arkansas?

Science Fiction. Humans' idea of the future in their past media reads as very silly to Inezra. Though she thinks franchises like Alien are interesting enough, when viewed from the standpoint that systems humans knew that were somewhat simple would be easier to repair (re: CRT monitors and whatnot). At least they had robots.

Human Expansionism. Humans dreamed big, didn't know shit, and then also didn't manage to go any further than their moon before they blew their whole planet up. They couldn't even conquer all the land on their own planet and use it effectively. Kind of funny, not gonna lie!

Human Phrases

Y'all, die badly (Dave's fault), you do you, other assorted pieces of slang and references that are actually difficult to keep track of. Maybe I'll update this section later.

Human Media

She isn't a fan of most human media! She doesn't think they effectively use their screen time at all. This is mostly a complaint about shows like Why Women Kill. They already spent 3 hours showing you reasons why. Go ahead and get to the part where the husbands get murdered, thank you.

She dislikes unrealistic violence in movies because it takes the fun out of it. Realistic fear and fighting are better. She especially likes when humans use tools in their environment to beat monsters. Go human. Sorry you're weak, but at least you can put your neurons to use.

g-witch thoughts! i loved this show, it’s my favorite non-tomino gundam by a mile and while i wish it had gotten the full 50 episode gundam treatment to better pace certain plotlines and flesh some things out, i think it was still satisfying.

spoilers //    and such under the cut.

suletta and miorine get married 🥰 the ending felt like a direct reference to the ending of iron-blooded orphans, with miorine in her suit rolling up at the nice little farm suletta is living at with the rest of their family. two mainline gundams in a row ending on women being married. not that bandai will acknowledge it.

it’s a relatively low-death ending, but miorine and suletta floating in space gave me echoes of fa and kamille, though with an immediate happy ending instead of waiting through zz to see how it went. and it certainly doesn’t have the punch or power of utena’s ending. i think it could have hit those zeta or utena highs with more episodes, but for what it is, it’s simple and sweet.

i warmed up more to the miscellaneous elans as i began to saw them both as a broad comparison point for suletta and eri - el5n unmasking prospera seemed anticlimactic at first, but i think his place as a clone makes that more interesting and it was put into perspective by el4n being who suletta meets in the data storm. and after him barely being a character prior to this, it was amusing to see original elan be like ‘lol anyway later losers, gonna go fuck that jeturk guy.’

the slighter death toll and happier ending also brought me back to utena in some ways, with the elans reminding me in ways of mamiya.

i still wish sophie and norea had gotten some lines from the data storm, though. i liked seeing prospera’s husband and all, but sophie and norea were more interesting so i want some follow up beyond ‘they’re just vibing in the soup~!’

but speaking of nadeem or whatever, wild that kenanji never got any sort of comeuppance for killing him or, like, threatening children and shit. even prospera could not defeat his immaculate tboy swag, good for him. he’s too hot for me to hold it against him.

prospera is a very interesting char clone, and while i think she suffers more in the finale from that rushed feeling than sulemio do, i like the broad strokes. my biggest criticism is the ableist tendency of shows like this to go ‘eh, shaddiq gets years in prison as his punishment, and prospera gets (checks notes) being in a wheelchair’. as though that is a punishment, or that it would hinder her ability to commit further crimes. (her actual reason for not doing so is love of her family, but if i were the council who was about to space laser quiet zero and everyone in it, i’m not sure i’d accept that one as an out.)

but eri being able to connect with her sister reminds me of ple two’s connection to the original elpeo ple swaying her to aeug’s side; and i think we see in char’s ending a similar hesitance about his plan that prospera has, when he revealed he gave amuro the psycho-frame for nu gundam. so i think there’s some gundam history shorthand helping with the shorter episode count, for me.

the tone of the ending prior to the cute mercury family stuff - the ‘well we solved this conflict but let’s be honest it’s gonna last like a decade at most’ - reminds me, again, of iron-blooded orphans... but also turn a gundam, in a way i appreciate. turn a has that same vibe of ‘these evil capitalists are out of the picture, this conflict is resolved, but the ones who remain or who replace them? they are just building more mobile suits for the next time a war comes.’ it’s a happy ending for our heroes, but it’s not a resolution to the class war between earthians and spacians.

AYE’S YEAR OF WRITING ‘22

Hi, hello! How have you been? I hope the season’s treating you well. It’s that time of the year again—to see how I ruled as a writer this year. (It’s already 2023, though. Happy New Year!)

GENERAL WORD COUNT: Forty-one thousand eight hundred plus words—pops confetti—across eleven stories! That’s not a lot compared to what I’ve written last year, but I’m pretty proud of it, especially because almost half of it was written within thirty days—thanks, Camp Nano.

If you happen to stumble upon my posts, you may know some of them: Lethal Bloods, Mariang Makiling, Red Complex, Crimson, Fair Waters, Maharlika, All in Favor, Say Aye, Red Cuts, Where the Poet Went to Die, Don’t Fall Asleep, and Tres.

Yeah…I don’t think jumping from one WIP to another is good…for me. But it’s fun!

WORKS IN PROGRESS: In addition to drafting the stories listed above, a few ideas came up and made it to my list of projects. It seems like I’d never run out of stories to write and talk about.

New WIP #1: Human x Deities — Once in a while the deities would come down from their heavenly, divine realm to visit the mundane (like tourists.) When they do, a human would accompany them (like a tourist guide). The story features the gods of Philippine Mythology, soulmates and reincarnations (I’m a huge sucker for it), shamans and glowing tattoos.

New WIP #2: Flea Market Isekai — MC enters a flea market at the wrong time and finds herself in the same market with a different crowd. The story features the wonderful creatures of Philippine Mythology.

There are also four new short stories. *eye emojis*

WORLDBUILDING: Maybe I didn’t surpass my word count last year because I was too immersed in ✨worldbuilding✨.

Tres. Following the decision to change the titles and revise the origins of the characters I immediately went to Tres’s worldbuilding — an island far, far away; isolated from the main population (which could mean a lot of things, but most importantly overlooked crimes, gore, and everything in between.) The island, San Angel, is modest and gorgeous, but like a multicolored amphibian in a rainforest, it is deadly. Lovely flowers grow by the earthen roads, and underneath lies the remains of those buried without tombstones.

Red Complex. The red strings universe is expanding. In addition to a novella called Red Cuts, there’s a short story collection featuring characters from the mundane and the Matchmaker’s realm.

The Morose Cat. There’s a mini worldbuilding series I call, The Uphill Town, introducing a town up the hill (where the story takes place) and what makes it so different…and magical. For one, there’s an abandoned shrine that cats always pass through, and where the veil between the mundane and the otherworldly fades.

Elementaliaverse. There are so many things I added recently to the project and the stories. Mainly: Mystique Heights, Fair Waters, and Maharlika.

Worldbuilding, my beloved.

WRITEBLR. I can confidently say I interacted with the community more in 2022, and it was so much fun! Hopefully, I could do the same and more this 2023, and participate in more writeblr events/activities. Speaking of which, here are two: 30 Days, 30 Lines Challenge (by blind-the-winds), and Trick or Treat Writeblr Halloween Event (by pluttskutt). Thank you so much for these!

BOOKS & READING. I read less than ten books, and I enjoyed them. I am open to random book recommendations in my inbox/messages. We went on a trip for Christmas, and the funniest, most writer thing I did was buy a stick (an arnis stick, the vendor told me, though it seemed different), thinking it would help me write one of my WIPs. worldbuilding, character bios, and general info about this growing monster of an au below (this will be one out of five or so main character posts, alongside an assortment of miscellaneous au posts)

the story takes place in albion, a land of earth pony-dominated kingdoms. the kingdoms are fairly self contained and isolated from the other races, which has led to prejudices running rampant within them—especially against unicorns. ponies fear what they do not understand. unicorns are feared and distrusted for their magic, and almost every kingdom seeks to control them in some manner. some issue unicorn citizens "horn-caps" that stopper and siphon their magic at the will of the king; others simply prosecute the use of magic far more severely than crimes of the same caliber, or attempt to chop off horns entirely. canterlot, the kingdom from which celestia's sprawling modern city takes its name, was once a kingdom more welcoming to magic than the rest, until its king lost his wife as the result of a deal with a sorceress, beginning a war against magic that would last decades. now, unicorns living in canterlot are hunted viciously and killed if they are discovered, going to every possible length to conceal their horns and their magic—if, indeed, they must live in canterlot at all.

in the wake of iron hoof's purge, ponyworld was thrown out of balance, albion's magical population driven near to extinction. the sudden tragedy pushed mirinae, the goddess of magic (also called the triple goddess), into action: she needed not only to right the balance but to create an entity that would embody the collective spirit of magic itself; a protector, invincible and all-powerful, there to ensure that her people—her children—would never be so viciously hurt again. this will would mold into the spirit emrys. mirinae had a second will, however—a will that assumed the shape of the once and future king. as there would be a protector of magic, so, too should there be a ruler on the other side: someone meant to mend the divide between the three races that has sown so much strife for so long and stand beside emrys in the quest to protect magic.

other beings:

pegasi are rarely seen, preferring to keep to themselves in their kingdoms of clouds. while less discriminated against than unicorns, they are still regarded with suspicion by most of the seven kingdoms' inhabitants due to their weather manipulation powers and seemingly "unnatural" flight capability. they control albion's weather and bring about the change of seasons. while they once worked closely with the seven kingdoms, their paths have since parted, and a good portion of their reclusiveness can be explained by their disdain for the earth pony kings' cruel practices.

the dragons were once a great sentient race that lived parallel to the seven kingdoms, but as creatures of magic, they were captured in king iron hoof's vendetta and killed en masse alongside the unicorns. those that did not flee fought and were killed for it, and now, only a single dragon remains in albion: kilgarrah, the former king of the draconian nation and a powerful prophet.

dragonlords were a more earthly subset of pegasi, spending most of their time on the ground as denizens between the dragon and pony populations of albion. in their prime, they were seen as a "bridge" between the two extremes. each of the seven kingdoms had a designated dragonlord in their court to assist them with maintaining peace with the dragons and stop clashes of opinion from turning into wars. they inherit their powers upon the death of their dragonlord parent, at which point they are granted a variety of draconic traits and abilities, including the ability to command the dragons themselves (granted to them for mediative purposes). they, too, were killed in iron hoof's war on magic, only one managing to escape.

the druids are a nature-focused, nomadic, and highly spiritual class of unicorns scattered all across albion. though they were a major target of iron hoof's wrath, he did not manage to wipe them out completely, and there are still several bands that dwell throughout the seven kingdoms. they are strong believers in the prophecies and the triple goddess, hecate, and are among the most faithful citizens of albion awaiting the prophecized "golden age".

misc worldbuilding notes:

naming conventions in and around albion at the time varied depending on race. earth ponies put a lot of emphasis on their connection to the earth when it came to names, traditionally naming their foals after trees, herbs, or flowers. plant symbolism was an abundant art even for the less-literate, and many parents gave their foals the names of plants whose attributes they found admirable (for example, a mare naming her filly allium in hopes that she would grow up to be patient and prosperous). there was also a great deal of superstition surrounding giving foals less "earthly" names (such as refined cloths or jewels), suggesting that it would lead to bad luck or vanity as they aged. pegasi typically named their foals after flighted animals or types of weather, while dragonlords derived their names from more noble objects, like the gemstones eaten and hoarded by dragons. unicorns, both druid and otherwise, traditionally used more mystical or celestial-sounding names (ex: starswirl, mistmane, moonbeam), although in the times of the purge turned to plant derivative names for the sake of blending in. (basically, i invented a canon in-world excuse for me always naming ponies after plants ksgfjfbfn)

characters:

MERLIN is BLUEBELL, the son of an earth pony mare from a farming village on the edge of hayssetir and the escaped last dragonlord, as well as the manifestation of the goddess hecate's protective will over all magic-kind. though bluebell takes the appearance of a pegasus, he conceals a small horn beneath his curly hair and, when necessary, several layers of glamour (the magic of over half albion's magical population wouldn't fit into just any old unicorn body, after all). he grew up ostracized by his village for, among other things, his wings, his "strange demeanor", and the unanimously-harbored but never-proven suspicion that he had magic. despite all this, however, he has a spunky disposition and an allergy to respecting authority that gave his poor mother many a premature grey hair while he was growing up.

ARTHUR is PRINCE GOLDENROD, the said authority that bluebell is allergic to respecting. he is king iron hoof's only son, the product of a deal between him and the powerful sorceress mirinae, which also caused the death of his mother, queen lillium, and kickstarted iron hoof's decades-long war on magic. being born royal and more than a little bit spoiled, goldenrod is on many levels a haughty, insufferable prat (as bluebell takes to calling him), but he has a good heart. he has grown up being taught to hate and fear magic as his father does, but various factors have lead to him doubting iron hoof's policies more and more as the years go by. these doubts are only fed by the arrival of bluebell: a strange young stallion with more secrets than he has feathers, and more bravery than he has brain.

MORGANA is LADY NIGHTSHADE, the ward of king iron hoof. allegedly the daughter of one of the king's late allies, her birth was viewed as a tragedy by most of the kingdom (or at least, those in the kingdom who scream the loudest): nightshade is a unicorn, born miraculously to two earth pony parents (a feat that is rare, but not unheard of). her parents died when she was a young foal, but thankfully, iron hoof took her in as his ward as a gesture of good will, simply keeping her contained under the magic-suppressing horn cap her parents gifted her shortly after birth rather than killing her. nightshade is a fierce, rebellious character despite (or perhaps as a consequence of) her upbringing, holding many strong beliefs that go against iron hoof's policies and speaking her mind frequently. iron hoof assures that, thanks to the horn cap, nightshade is as harmless as your average earth pony—but magic has to find an outlet somehow, and lately, nightshade's dreams have developed a disturbing habit of coming true.

GUINIVERE is HEATHER INGOT, lady nightshade's chambermare, and the equal parts kind- and strong-hearted daughter of one of canterlot's best blacksmiths. she and nightshade are very close, and thanks to their relationship, heather has inherited many of nightshade's more liberal worldviews—however, she cares for nightshade a great deal, and fears that the other mare's outspokenness will put her in danger. she was bluebell's first friend when he arrived in canterlot, then later on became goldenrod's friend and eventual paramour, joining the group in many of their adventures both before and after becoming goldenrod's queen. despite her eventual royal station, she does not let her common upbringing be pressed out of her, maintaining the strong hoof of a blacksmith long into her life.

okay, round up of miscellaneous NtN thoughts now that I've finished it. content warning for the usual TLT shit, and also my generally very mixed opinions about the series, and so on.

the whole cow situation and resulting moral outrage is wildly underwhelming to me. eight thousand eye-rolling emoji at everyone in-universe as we speak. like oh no, someone killed a bunch of (iirc raised-for-meat??) cows for an instrumental purpose of keeping some humans alive... come back when the entire species has stopped eating beef and maybe I won't want to kick you for being pea-brained hypocrites.

I need. some kind of explanation to make sense of Nona continually referring to dead!Gideon as "Kiriona Gaia" and Babs!Ianthe as "he", while also being perfectly spot-on accurate when it comes to Cam, Pal, and Pyrrha? like not in the moral sense but in the sense of, "if the latter is about matching the social cues her family gives her, why does that not apply for the former? if it's about her ability to read people's identities from their motion and general physicality, does the body being dead but still inhabited really make that much of a difference, and if so, then still why does she keep being immune to correcting social cues for those two in particular? why is Coronabeth "Crown" and Aim "the Angel?" etc etc"

so Cristabel seems to be two for two in terms of "died via killing herself in service of some greater goal she wanted for another person she cared about, despite them going "no fuck don't do that", huh?"

John and Blood of Eden really are just equal and opposite varieties of insufferable to me, honestly

(John because *gestures at Everything*, and BoE bc 1. similarly pretentious motherfuckers aren't they; 2. that meme of the lady putting boxes up high out of the child's reach and this particular box says "zombies"; 3. look I don't like Judith Deuteros either but that's no excuse for war crimes (if you want advice on quality war crimes to do while fighting a magic society with deities hanging around, please consult one (1) Turyin Mulaghesh Divine Cities trilogy))

I do think the main thing that's interesting to me about the pre-rez chapters, is the way it contrasts... (even immense quantities of) personal power vs the institutional self-sustaining power of capitalism+the state? but/and also... by the point that you're puppeting the (I assume?) president of the United States, could you not figure out how to. spot-remove the trillionaires and take control of their plans in the same way...? I mean. there just seems to be more effective use of the personal power they had, compared to what they actually did. (I'm inclined to put that down to John's bigger emotional motivations being personal aggrandizement & glory, being the one Known to have saved the day, if that's up against truly getting shit done, ngl. see above re: insufferable.)

CamPal fusion made me cry like a baby. it's so..... like the relief and love on Cam's end just hits like a truck; and then at the same time I completely get Nona's distress at "these two specific people I love no longer exist". but idk, to me it's more of a... grief about change than about straight-up loss, if that makes sense? because of the way various Cam and Pal things aren't just flat gone in the way they'd be if they winked out of existence instead of transforming. esp since Palamedes was already very much on borrowed tenuous time.

("Paul" reallllyyyy doesn't do it for me, though. because of, rather than in spite of, the thematic baggage, personally speaking. esp when they could've picked something nice like "Garnet" instead)

I still don't get the other planets in the solar system having rez beasts if the rationale for "planet has a soul" is anything remotely like the explanation John gave back in HtN. like sure, I buy him eating all the people on say, space stations at each one, fine - but a few space stations isn't an ECOSYSTEM??? I just. either the other planets have all been terraformed to some degree (in which case why do we need to go to Tau Ceti?), or else whence comes this planet soul? I'm sorry to be a nitpicker and a "why? why? why?" bird, but it's fundamentally in my nature #scorpionshrug

And they're fighting themselves the pseudo empires them and they're not going to have a chance and they blew it but really this is going to take out a whole bunch of their big mouth fighters going to be more pleasant and they'll think it's the other way around so they'll be spazzes and we'll have to stop them but for real these things are happening right now they're getting ready the evacuation is picking up they're using Easter in the snowbirds as an excuse and you're moving out they are moving out large numbers of campers are on the highway is a humongous evacuation giant numbers and they won't have any Force here to speak of they think it'll Force themselves in when they lack the armament to do it there's Facebook is going to be destroyed and they won't have any way of getting here and we need that to happen so far we have 4% on the highway it is out of about 27% the population of Florida now they're about 50% roughly a little bit more there's a lot of them here yeah why did it have to invade if there's a lot of them here because they're about half the population the other half is pseudo empire and they've been fighting over it like that for quite a while pseudo empire is flowing in they've got heavy coming down they've got heavy just north of them into the west and they're going to stop them there they have ships moving in and the more luck are going to try and get here with ships and they're going to get hit and they're going to lose their ships right now the pseudo empire has 15 billion ships and the more luck have about 10 million no billion and they're going to try and use the ships and it's going to be a war in space and we believe that the pseudo empire can hold them off they probably will get some help from other groups maybe not minority more luck with some foreigners and some miscellaneous it makes a big difference it's been boiling down to this for years and they all know it just keep bothering our son so we can take it out on them but we're going to publish it this is huge
