Note
For the ghost friend IK (ghosthunter doesn't seem like the right word since she's helping them move on and not like exterminating them), imagine she gets summoned to the Devildom, senses all the demonic energy, and immediately starts shooting the demons with her holy water gun
depending on whether whoever blessed it was just a human priest or a genuine angel that she somehow met, the demons are either extremely confused (and damp), or are reacting like cats when you spray water at them
lucifer attempts to intimidate ik by yelling at her to stop and she just shoots him directly in the eye

knock knock knock knock knock.
a loud sigh makes its way from the heap of covers in the middle of the bed in the grand bedroom. this little routine max loved happened nearly every damn week and god if it didnt annoy you every time-
knock knock knock knock knock.
you let out a long groan this time, muffling the sound of the door opening and the footsteps quickly making their way toward your bed, and just as you're about to reluctantly leave the comfort of where you sleep a giant weight plops on top of you.
"y'know i was about to berate you for sleeping in later but im actually feeling pretty comfy now."
"get off of me." you grumble, pushing your knees and arms forward to try to push your best friend off of you, making him laugh in the process.
"only if you get up." he moves his body to face you, his piercing blue eyes looking into yours.
your heart beats irregularly.
"ok fine, just move" you sigh.
he smiles victoriously, letting out a small giggle and rolling over on your bed, giving you the reluctant freedom to get up and start your day.
you move to your closet, look through your picked outfits and choose the one you feel would work for today before you move to your bathroom to wash up. until you see max get up from the bed.
"don't even think about it." you warn.
his eyes widen and the corner of his mouth quirks up slightly, showing how he thinks hes so hilarious.
“hurry up then, i need your help with something.”
you take a quick shower and put on your outfit and makeup, max’s foreboding words stuck in your mind and nearly making you poke your eye. it wasn't often that max let you in on one of his schemes, but when he did you knew your life was going to get very interesting for a few weeks.
“alright, what are you planning this time?” you ask, exiting the bathroom and grabbing your jacket and bag for school. max is already at the door, taking your hand in his as he leads you down the steps and out of your house. but not before you both say goodbye to your grandmother, who’s all sweet smiles in the mornings and has packed you some valentines themed goodies.
“don’t alright me, l/n. i swear this is finally the plan that you're going to agree with me on,” max holds your bags for you as you browse through something on your phone. once you're finished you make grabby hands for the snacks, looking through it after he quickly hands it to you to see some filled donuts and croissants. popping one in your mouth, you muffle a go-ahead for him to tell you his plan.
“first things first, I cant take all of the credit for this. our sweet little akeno helped, don't give me that look! he can be sneaky when he wants to be. anyway, both of us noticed something about audrey and need your help with it.”
“what have you noticed about her? is she acting like a diva because I'm afraid to admit that's how she’s always gonna be.” you joke, giggling when max rolls his eyes.
“obviously not that. its not about her personality but her..attraction to someone we know,” he states, sending you a pointed look that has you nearly stumbling over yourself. “don’t look so surprised, you definitely knew something was up.”
you stutter, still trying to process this load of information that's been dumped on you. “i-i knew she was being nicer to me, but I just thought she wanted some emotional support other than julien! are you seriously trying to say she has a crush on me?”
”that, my dearest, is what we’re going to find out.” his hand patting your shoulder alerts you to your surroundings, seeing you've already arrived to the crowded entrance of constance billards - st. jude’s.
he still doesn't let your hand go as you walk up to your table, the rest of your friends already sitting down and talking to each other.
“dont act so happy to see us, everybody,” you announce your presence, a collection of small greetings being directed to you.
“that’s five days in a row you’ve been late, y/n. if you need a lesson on punctuality you could always just ask.” money chides, looking at you with her iconic sarcastic smile.
“good morning to you too, money bags.” you joke, laughing along with luna as monet rolls her eyes at your silly nickname for her.
“you two look cozy.” the distinct voice of audrey hope pops up, her eyes pointed towards you and max’s conjoined hands. you hear max laugh under his breath.
deciding to tease her a bit you rush over to her and tightly wrap your arms around her, ignoring her protests so as to not ruin her outfit. “aww, don't get jealous auds. you know you’re my favorite hugging buddy.”
“you’re an idiot.”
“cmon, you know you love me.” you let her go a bit to look at her face, the blonde looking everywhere but at your eyes.
holy shit.
you look to max and aki who are sitting next to each other on one of the benches, the two of them looking at you with knowing expressions.
“did your grandma give you breakfast again? please tell me she made those stuffed donuts that I love.” aki reaches over to grab the bag from your hands, figuring you’ve caught on and will tease audrey some more. his face lights up when he sees the treats, taking a donut and biting out a large chunk.
when it came to audrey, aki was able to tell what she was thinking easily. she couldn't hide the clear distaste on her face when talking to someone she disliked, or the way she always seemed at peace when watching old hollywood movies. his girlfriend was a visually open book, which he regularly used to his advantage. but the one thing he didn't expect audrey to take a clear attraction to was you.
the way her eyes trailed after you when you headed to class, how she would frequently bring you up in conversation. he even noticed how she also did the same with their dear friend max. at first he thought it was jealousy, but now he knows there’s something more behind those eyes. it wasn't until he brought it up with max that they came up with the plan to see just how far they could push audrey until she admitted her not-so-secret feelings.
“dont be do greedy, menzies,” you snatch the bag back from his hands, “yes she made enough for everybody. including some croissants which i know you love, auds.” you say, picking out a croissant and raising it to the blonde girls mouth. she glares at you for a few seconds before leaning in and taking a bite while maintaining eye contact.
“alright I'm out of here. you four are always so weird.” monet gags before rushing from the table to class, the rest of your friends laughing and agreeing before trailing after her.
“and then there were four,” max muttered, wearing his usual smirk and putting his arms around aki and audrey’s shoulders before looking at you. “what ever shall we do now?”
“not whatever you’re planning. ill see you three at lunch,” you say goodbye to the three before heading to class. you would need some alone time to process what just happened and what it meant for your relationship with your best friends.
.
.
.
right after your english literature class with audrey ended, the girl tells you not to wait up for her as the teacher wants to over her last essay with her. walking the short distance into the middle courtyard, you see max and aki already at your table and engaged in normal conversation. walking over, max roughly pulls you into a side embrace, dragging you halfway onto the table.
“if it isn't our little star of the evening,” max gushed, smiling brightly at you.
“its eleven in the morning.”
“just enjoy my compliments, y/n.” ”anyway,” aki butts it, leaning forward to get a better part in the conversation. “thanks for going along with the plan so effortlessly this morning. we were going to take it a bit further tonight.”
they smile at you, aki’s hesitant and max’s borderline devilish.
“oh god what is it now?” you ask, slapping max’s thigh and laughing at his squeal.
“stop doing that! and what dear akeno was going to say was that he wants us to make it look like we're close so audrey gets a little jealous.”
your brows squint in confusion. “but we are close. we’re nearly attached at the hip most of the time?”
“he means make it look like we’re screwing.”
you move to smack max again, but he seems to expect it as he laughs and moves out of your hand's trajectory. you'd gotten used to max’s potty mouth but that didn't mean he could just say things like that in public. especially with this stupid gossip girl thing going around.
“have some class, wolfe.”
“if i did id be a different person, l/n. and we all know you'd miss my charming personality.” he purrs, throwing an arm around your shoulder. he’s really committed to this act, you think, as he looks like he wants to eat you alive. ”i can't believe im saying this but max is right,” aki says, smiling at max’s faux-insulted face, “if there's one thing i know about audrey its that when she feels like she’s missing out on something she will do everything she can to get it. she spent three hours last tuesday looking for a vintage chanel purse that got discontinued almost thirty years ago.”
“she definitely is persistent when she wants to be. which is precisely why this will work if me and y/n shag it up.” max leers. you consider criticizing his choice of words but decide to leave it.
“ok, so we make her jealous, and then what? she figures out her sexuality? what else?” you question.
they both open their mouths to speak but stop, not having thought that far. you can feel yourself slowly losing hope in them before max finally speaks.
“we’ll figure it out when is happens.”
.
.
.
its a few hours later that you’re back at home, getting dressed as you wait for max to come back from his house so you can go to dumbo hall together as the next part of the plan. throughout the whole school day, max had taken his part of the plan very seriously, treating you how he would one of his new flames.
he moved his desk right next to yours in your language class, unsuccessfully trying to persuade the teacher to let him stay and let the two of you work together, he held your hand as he walked you to your final class before pointing out how audrey was staring at your conjoined hands like they were her mortal enemy.
before you got in your lift home, he bid you goodbye with a long kiss right on your cheek, smirking at your shocked expression. you could've sworn you heard an all too familiar scoff and a mass of blonde hair storming in your opposite direction.
knock knock knock.
fixing up the last of your makeup and touching up your hair, you glide over to your bedroom door before opening it. in front of you stands max, wearing a not all the way buttoned up striped silk shirt with white pants and dress shoes. a classic max wolfe get-up but entrancing as always.
you try to ignore his eyes dragging up and down your body, his eyes lingering on your hips and chest before resting on your eyes.
“i don't know it could use a few touch-ups,” max purrs as steps closer to you, your neck having to crane to look up at him, “y’know i wouldn't mind helping you out of that and being a little late.”
“oh shut up, you flirt.” you groan, pushing his smiling face out of your way to head downstairs to your shared lift. max trails after you, hot on your heels as he takes your hand to help you step into the car without flashing someone because of your dress.
the ride there is mostly silent and it surprises you. in a good way. you'd been best friends with max for years now and it seemed like every time you two shared a space you were always talking about something, whether it be his recent sexual adventures or one of your new achievements.
but this silence was…comfortable. he didnt say any other innuendos about your looks, deciding to just sit beside you and look out the window, his left hand slightly brushing your right. you dont say anything when he conjoins your hands together, no cameras around to see you.
you enjoy the prospect of having him in privacy more than you'd like to admit. it takes more of you to admit that it feels like someones something’s missing.
when the car stops outside the building of dumbo, max helps you outside of the car and stays beside you up the elevator to the bar, keeping a pale hand on the bottom of your back as he gently guides you. its quiet again in the elevator unil you get a shared message from aki.
aki : we'll be there soon. gossip girl wont shut up about you two. audrey is 😾. almost done!
you both laugh at his message, all too familiar with audreys signature pout when she's pissed off. you told her once in eighth grade that she looked like a kitten when she did it and she told you to shut up. she's been using the cat emojis since.
“just one more push and audrey will finally join the alphabet alliance.” max laughs.
“did you ever think this would happen?” you ask. “i mean it in the nicest way but auds always seemed like the straightest girl ever.”
“so did i until what happened last summer.” max laughs but cuts himself off, looking like he really didnt want that to slip out.
your brows raise. “what happened last summer?”
“iiii don't know what you're talking about. it was a completely normal day with friends being normal. about each other. yup.”
max wolfe was caught off guard. if it weren't so shocking you would have taken a picture for memory's sake.
“cmon, you can tell me maxie,” you tease, bringing out the pet name you used to call him when you were little.
“nope. mhm. not falling for it.”
before you can question him further the elevator stops on the top floor, the familiar dark yellowish lighting and mingling twenty-somethings welcoming you into the space.
max rushes out of the elevator, trying his best to avoid telling you what happened last summer. in the short walk over to the seating area, you keep your eye on him as he maneuvers over to the bar, hopefully ordering your favorite cocktail. you would need it for the night ahead.
you feel a hand wrap around your wrist before pulling you down onto the couch, your brain stalling as it rushes to comprehend what just happened. thankfully, it's just luna. horribly, it's just luna.
“tell me everything. when did you two hook up? or are you only dating? i really doubt it because your sexual chemistry is through the roof-”
“lune!” you groan, stopping her inquiries as she giggles at you. while you loved luna and went to her for advice often, she really knew how to pry to get you to open up to her.
“we aren't actually together,” you whisper, “its just to help someone figure something out.”
luna’s brow raises. “sounds like a weird favor, but i’ll play along. but be honest with me, when this person figures out whatever it is they need to figure out, are you sure you’l be able to just…go back to normal?”
“yeah, of course, we will.” it takes you a few seconds to answer, and you can tell by the look on the brunette's face that she doesn't believe you.
you're not that sure you believe in yourself either.
a glass of f/c enters your vision and you take it happily, thanking max as he settles on the couch next to you, throwing an arm around your shoulder. you try your best to ignore luna’ stare.
it’s a while later that the golden couple makes their appearance. aki looks good as usual, managing to effortlessly loo both adorable and enticing. he looks at you and gives a little smile and wave. it’s so sweet you don't know if those are butterflies in your stomach or plain sickness.
audrey is standing hand in hand with him and god does she take your breath away each time she dolls up. her watching old hollywood movies as a kid and falling in love with the styles that suited her perfectly, the blonde wearing a simple black halter neck gown with a diamond chain necklace. her hair is flowing over her back and shoulders, perfectly framing her face.
she ignores the both of you, flopping down on the couch in front of you and starting up a pointless conversation with julien, whose eyes dart between the four of you.
aki laughs under his breath and sits beside her, all of you struggling not to laugh at her little hmpf as she scoots away from him.
you get in the group chat when he waves his phone in your direction.
max : well she looks cheery
aki : she thinks i knew about the two of you dating and didn't tell her.
y/n : so she's upset with all of us. how do we make her realize she’s got a big fat crush on me if she’s going to avoid me like last season's manolos?
max : i’ve got an idea
as soon as you read the message max grabs your arm with that devious look on his face and announces that you two are going to talk in private. you look to aki who shrugs and audrey who is barely concealing her annoyance.
max takes you across the room and inside a set of doors, pulling them almost all the way shut before he turns to you.
“i’ve got an idea,” he says.
“so I've heard,” you laugh. “did you have to drag me across the whole room to tell me?”
“it was that week at the hamptons.”
your laugh stops. “what are you talking about?”
he sighs. “last summer, that week at the hamptons. we were hanging at the beach and when you came out of the water audrey was staring at you. and then that girl came up and started flirting with you and she was the angriest I've ever seen her.”
your brain takes in what he’s telling you and it helps explain… so much. how in the span of a few hours audrey went from asking you to help her get changed to getting shy when you noticed a birthmark on her ribcage. from asking you constantly when you were going to finally find a cute person to take you out to gagging at every person in your dm’s.
you just wished she would have voiced this to you. you noticed her slight jealousy and just took it as her being protective. you had told her numerous times that she was the only girl in your life, knowing the problems she had with abandonment, always telling her there would be room for her. it breaks your heart to think how she felt knowing you didn't feel the same.
but then there's akeno, your dear friend and audreys boyfriend. it was safe to say everyone - minus monet and maybe obie - had a crush on the pink-haired boy at some point. he was kind and maybe a bit too indecisive, but if you had a problem he was the most level-headed person you knew and he put things into perspective when you needed it. you remember when you came back from a trip thinking everyone had forgotten your birthday only to be surprised by a birthday party thrown by no one other than aki.
“i just wish she would have told me.” you sigh. you look at max’s face to see his mouth in a thin line as he stares at any place in the room but you. “maxie? what’s wrong?”
“god, stop with that nick - you know what, im just gonna say it. i only notice audrey was staring at you because i was. i mean, you do realize you’re fucking gorgeous, right? we really should have expected this. the friends to lovers thing is pretty played out but i thought i would wait it out long enough to-”
max’s rambling is abruptly cut off when you grab the back of his head and bring his lips to yours. it takes him a few seconds to realize what's happening before he kisses back, but when he does… you’d heard talk from boys and girls around school about the skill of max wolfe’s mouth but you had no idea it could feel as good as this.
it was both desperate but sweet, the kiss of two people who were long overdue to indulge in each other this way. its not long into it that his mouth prods yours open, his tongue meeting yours when you do so willingly. the suddenness and intensity of the kiss makes you dizzy, your hands blindly coming up to pull harshly at the brunette's hair. he moans into the kiss, slightly pulling away and smiling when you chase after his mouth.
“i guess it's safe to say we’re on the same page,” he breathes, the breathiness of his voice making you want to kiss him until he can't speak, “i always had a feeling you'd be a good kisser but jesus,”
“shut up, wolfe.”
“make me, l/n.”
he doesn't have to tell you twice before you’re bringing him back to you. this time he takes more charge, his large hands wrapping up from your back and pulling you in. he moves the attack of his mouth to your neck, sucking so hard at one spot that you know there’ll be a hickey but that excites you even further-
you slightly open your eyes in ecstasy and widen them when they lock with audrey’s in the doorway. aki is standing behind her, looking both scared but…supportive?
you (reluctantly) push max off of you, and the small noise of confusion he makes almost makes the situation better. almost.
audrey steels herself and drags aki further into the room before commanding he close and lock the door, turning back to the two of you stuck standing like kids who were caught stealing from the cookie jar.
“so it’s true. you two are sleeping around and you didnt even bother telling me.” she seethes. but you know her. she puts up an angry front because she’s hurt.
“yup, sorry auds but we wanted to keep it a secret for a bit longer. it was fun to sneak around behind everyone’s backs, anyway,” max boasts, sliding up behind you and wrapping his arms around you. “we would have told you eventually. we didnt think you would get so upset.”
“obviously im upset! my two best friends are sneaking around behind my back!”
“but…are you sure that’s why your upset?” you ask her.
she halts, keeping eye contact with you as she studies your face. you can see the moment she understands but squash it down, in fear that you don’t really mean what you say.
“of course. i should know these things. im…happy for you.”
“babe, c’mon,” aki begs, moving to join you by your side. “it’s ok, trust me. we know. that’s why we did this.”
she squints, eyes flickering between the three of you before she scoffs out a laugh and folds her hands over her chest. “you’re all assholes, you know that? if you had an inkling about how i do or don’t feel you could talk to me like normal people.”
glad she’s not that upset, you rush in and hug her body close to yours, lifting her a bit up off the ground as she yelps and slaps you on the shoulder. it doesn't help, she's barely concealing a smile when you look at her. you turn back to look at aki, who rolls his eye and mouths a “duh” at you before you move in and kiss audrey hope like you’ve been waiting a lifetime for it.
it’s both different but the same as max’s kiss, the desperation still there but less hurried. its slow and soft, comforting knowing you’ll get to do this again as much as you want now. that fat shocks you into pulling away from her, her eyes blinking up at you as she smiles prettily, the non-smudge lipstick that you got her working like a charm.
you feel a tap on your shoulder and look to your boys, the two having shared flushed cheeks and grins. deciding to finish your perfect little square, you giggle as you move over to give aki a sweet kiss as max drags in audrey for the same.
when all of you stop, you stand in silence for a minute just sharing looks before you all start laughing. normally after something like this you'd be nervous, wondering if you just ruined a relationship, but with the three of them you felt safe. you didnt have to worry about what you were, what you would do in the morning, or even the next few minutes. you just got to laugh in happiness with your favorite people knowing they felt the same about you.

An Odd Trend
Tiktok, like any other social media platform, was known for its various trends and challenges among its user base. Trends varied widely on any given week from harmless face filters to dancing in the middle of a busy road. Needless to say, a trend can be risky and even deadly if taken too far.
Fortunately enough, some trends never take off due to lack of engagement. Unfortunately, however, one of the latest social media challenges to hit Tiktok didn't need a massive user base to take effect. Even with just two users the trend's effect will activate, and its consequences will be felt.
It was yet another slow day at the gas station for Ibrahim. As much as he enjoyed the easy money, he found himself getting bored very frequently. He took out his phone during a free moment and opened it to no new notifications. Ibrahim wasn't sure what he was expecting when he unlocked it, but he had hoped for at least something mildly interesting. He did, however, notice that his latest Tiktok had started getting attention. He opened the app and smiled at the sight of all his new followers. All he had to do was keep posting gym content. It bothered Ibrahim that most of the people engaging with his videos were men, but he knew a follower was a follower and soon he'll have enough so that he could focus solely on being a content creator.
With his dream of success in mind, Ibrahim decided to capitalize on his free time and make some more videos. He turned on the camera, ready to hit record, only to remember he had no idea what to do. He took a look around but all he saw was the same old convenience store. Ibrahim had already done himself at work so many times, he needed something fresh if he was going to go viral again.
He leaned against the counter as he began to browse the endless list of filters Tiktok had. Ibrahim had once made a recently released filter go viral. Everyone had given him the credit for starting the trend too. He was hoping he could do it again with the right filter. After scrolling for a while, Ibrahim was ready to call it quits for the day. But just before he closed out his phone, a certain thumbnail had caught his eye. It was a relatively simple design: two stick figures with a round about arrow connecting them along with the words "Me & You." Despite how plain looking the thumbnail was, something about it was indescribably intriguing. Out of sheer curiosity, Ibrahim clicked on it. Then, a little infographic about the filter popped up.
"Welcome to the Me & You challenge! Get ready to take getting to know other people to a whole new level! This filter will connect you to another person in live time. After a few seconds of conversation, just hit the button, and get ready for a once in a lifetime experience! Note: This is a beta version. We are actively fine tuning and fixing bugs as we find them. We thank you for your understanding!"
The description was straightforward enough, but Ibrahim was still confused on what exactly the filter was supposed to do. Despite the off feeling Ibrahim was getting, he decided to give it a shot anyway. He figured, after all, that the worst that could happen was his Tiktok would flop.
Ibrahim propped up his phone and hit the button to turn on the filter. He was expecting it to connect right away, but all he got was a buffering circle. As he waited, Ibrahim attended to a couple of customers that walked in. The app connected while he was busy, and he hurriedly finished helping the last customer. He picked up his phone and saw there was just some guy with a cowboy hat on the other end of the video call.
"Hey," Ibrahim said.
"What up," the other guy responded.
Their conversation ended up starting and finishing there. The two men stood around in silence, avoiding eye contact with the other.
"Do you know how this is supposed to work?" the other guy asked Ibrahim.
"No." Ibrahim answered.
Then the two waited in silence again. Luckily, a red button with a 🔄 symbol popped up not long after. Ibrahim saw the button and pushed it without hesitation. He heard a distinct clicking sound coming from his phone when he did so. Ibrahim then watched as the other guy's eyes widened and saw he did something on his end. He then heard the same clicking sound again. And with that, Ibrahim's phone flashed him with an intense bright light, causing him to kneel over to the ground.
Ibrahim was squirming in pain with his hands to his eyes. He could hear the other guy screaming too, but then he heard the call hang up. Not the Ibrahim cared, as he was busy enduring the eye pain as well as a sudden head pain.
A customer had walked in, and screamed at the sight of Ibrahim on the floor. She ran up to the counter and called out to him.
"Are you okay!?"
Ibrahim groaned as he massaged his temples. The pain was gradually going away with the coming minutes. Ibrahim then picked himself back up.
"Yeah... Yeah, I'm fine, thanks,"
"Oh thank goodness," the woman sighed. "I was worried I'd have to call 911. But I doubt a big, strong young man like yourself would go down that easily."
"Huh? Big? Strong?"
Ibrahim looked down at his body. He began inspecting his body, all while the woman watched with a concerned look in her eyes. She looked at his name tag.
"Ibrahim, is it? Did you hit your head? I think you might have a concussion..."
"Oof... you weren't kidding, I AM big and strong! Check this out!" the store attendant shouted out as he flexed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The man kept checking himself out, all while the woman watched. The woman kept asking him questions, and soon enough he started giving coherent answers. Then, after making sure he was mentally stable, the woman decided to flee the scene before anything else happened. The gas station attendant was then left all alone again, giving him the space to keep exploring his body.
"Oh man... I'm gonna enjoy this!!" he murmured as he lifted his shirt, taking a closer look at the goods he now owned.
***
Meanwhile, at a local city fair, a guy with a cowboy hat had fallen to the ground after his phone shined a white light into his eyes. Most the crowd ignored the young man rolling on the ground in pain. A young woman, noticing his condition, ran up to him.
"Alexis! Are you okay!?" The woman helped the guy back up to his feet. The guy nodded as he pinched the corners of his eyes. "What happened? Did you pregame or something?"
"What? No, I don't drink," the guy said with an attitude. He took his arm off her shoulder and leaned against a fence to help him keep his balance. He was still disoriented by sudden flash.
Tumblr media
"Ha, yeah right," the woman snorted. "And I'm a backup dancer for Ariana Grande."
The guy looked up at her annoyed, but quickly changed his tone when he saw how beautiful the young lady was. Flowing black hair, clear light brown skin, and beautiful eyes. Her curvy figure was the cherry on the sundae; he was mesmerized with her.
"You sure you good?" the woman asked.
"With you here, I've never felt better..."
"God, always the flirt huh," the woman laughed. The man joined in too.
The two then walked together to find a table. The girl led the way while the guy lagged behind. Although his infatuation with her had distracted him, he soon realized that something was horribly wrong. There were tattoos all along his arms, tattoos he didn't have before. He also noticed his nails were painted pink, and groaned in disgust at the sight of it. As he walked, he could feel something on his chest. He rubbed his chest and felt the nipple piercings he now possessed. He soon put two and two together and realized that he was in the wrong body. Ibrahim's blood boiled at the realization, but quickly cooled down when he realized... who would ever believe him? Then, he felt the loneliness start to sink in.
"Look, there's a free table!" the woman claimed the spot and called her friend over. Ibrahim leaned against the table. He had no idea what he was supposed to do in a situation like this. The woman noticed her friend was deep in thought, and reached out to hold his hand.
Tumblr media
"Hey, thank you." she whispered.
"Hm? For what?"
"For doing this. I mean, for taking me out. I know I haven't exactly been a good friend lately, but breaking up with Kevin was not easy. I'm just- so grateful to have a friend like you, Alexis. Someone that gets how trash men are."
Ibrahim listened carefully to everything the beautiful girl had to say to him. A girl like her would've dismissed Ibrahim as some scumbag fuck boy in his old body. But with a new body, Ibrahim stood a chance unlike ever before.
"Yeah, no problem. I'm glad I could help, I just want what's best for you."
The young lady smiled, and so did Ibrahim. The two held hands with a gentle grip. Ibrahim noticed how soft his new hands were, and how well they complimented her soft hands too.
"I wish more straight guys could be like you..." she gazed into his eyes. He returned the gesture in full. Ibrahim saw the opportunity, then took his swing at it.
"Hey, I have to confess something... I think I have feelings for you..."
The girl's eyes widened at first, but she quickly shrugged it off.
"That's just the tequila talking-"
"No! I swear it isn't, I haven't had a single drink tonight!" Ibrahim pleaded with her. He technically wasn't lying, and the girl could see he was more or less sober too.
"But... I thought you were gay..."
Ibrahim closed the distance between them. He held her close to him, and she wrapped her arms around his waist.
"Maybe... I'm feeling a little bisexual tonight..."
The two held each other close, then the two kissed- tenderly at first, then passionately as the feelings kicked in. With a straight soul in a gay body, arousal followed soon after. The two then left the fair early and proceeded to have the night of their lives.
***
Weeks had gone by since Ibrahim and Alexis became the first victims of the strange body swap filter Me & You. Although both had a rocky start having to adjust to their new lives, both men quickly found themselves right at home with their new bodies. Then as time went on, they had forgotten about ever having switched bodies in the first place. They had accepted and assimilated into their new identities without a problem.
Alexis kept up the all exercise needed to keep his new, muscular physique. But it was something he did with ease, especially considering how much he loved his new body. He took over Ibrahim's Tiktok following and even improved upon it when he gave all the gay followers what they wanted. Full body nudity and man on man action, both things Alexis provided with great joy. Ibrahim's old gym bros ditched him after he came out, but Alexis found new gym bros to grow close to (and in more ways the one).
Alexis showed off his body in front of the camera for another Tiktok, only to get interrupted by one of his gym bros coming from behind and squeezing his ass. Alexis smirked, then pulled him for a kiss on camera. Alexis loved his new body- and so did everyone else.
Tumblr media
As for Ibrahim, although he was initially very against the idea of accepting his fate, he warned up to it after finding a special reason to stay. Ibrahim had found love in Alexis' straight girl best friend, and the two were madly in love. Despite this, Ibrahim could never get used to how queer his new body was. He began making changes gradually to make himself more comfortable in his new skin- taking out all the piercings, keeping the make up off of him, and even hitting the gym again. Some of Alexis' old circle of friends noticed he had changed, but none of them ever bothered to question it. So long as Ibrahim was happy and wasn't really bothering anyone, everyone more or less accepted their now straighter friend. All's well that ends well.

meet cute - tasm!peter parker x reader
summary - meet cute, noun: an amusing or charming first encounter between two characters that leads to the development of a romantic relationship between them.
Tumblr media
“Sorry, sorry, sorry, I know I’m late” Peter opened his mouth but was quickly beaten to the task of speaking. “My meeting ran over and then Lydia called – have you heard from her? She had another fight with Tom. How those two live together will never cease to amaze me. Have you ordered yet? I think I fancy the spaghetti today”
There was a startled pause as she lifted her gaze. “You’re not Jane”
Peter gaped at the woman before him. Throughout her tirade, she’d hung her jacket across the back of her chair, unfolded her napkin and smoothed it over her lap, picked up a menu and browsed the wine options – of which there were many fine, albeit alarmingly expensive choices – all without looking at him.
Now, however, her attention was unwaveringly, unnervingly fixed on his face. His confused, perhaps understandably flustered face.
“No, no I’m not”
She half-winced, half-smiled. “Yeah, I can see that”
“Sorry” He laughed; the sound small but only a little awkward.
“Sorry? I believe I’m the one who stormed over to your table and ambushed you” Carefully, she picked the napkin from her lap, retracing the steamed folds and laying it neatly between the cutlery. “This is Jane and I’s table. I was in such a flap I didn’t even notice”
His brow lowered, but his smile remained intact. “A flap?”
“If you couldn’t tell, I’m somewhat stressed” Embarrassment warred with intrigue as she shifted in her seat, out of place but not unwelcome.
“Nah, you’re breezing through it”
She laughed, seemingly despite herself as she gathered her belongings. Peter held her gaze when she stood, maybe for a beat too long.
“Right – I should, I should go find Jane and leave you to whatever you were doing”
“I’m meeting my aunt – got some big news to share” He frowned, but her lips twitched at his ramblings.
“Well, good luck”
“Thanks” He should have let her walk away. Peter knew that. Should have let himself become an embarrassing anecdote but. But he didn’t want to. He wanted more of that smile, and laugh, and those bright eyes. “So, spaghetti’s the dish to order?”
She hummed her assent, pressing forward onto her toes before letting herself rock back onto her heels. “Goes really well – too well – with the Spanish red”
Peter winced on instinct. Her smile rushed to soothe him.
“I’ll admit, its pricey but, coincidentally, it’s also to die for, so” A huff of laughter pushed past her lips as her gaze bounced away from his, shy. “Plus, you’ve got big news to share. Surely that’s worth celebrating”
Warmth flooded his stomach at the thought of this beautiful stranger believing he deserved nice things. Pinpricks of heat pinked his checks, colouring him with flustered satisfaction.
“And if the big news is bad?” He needed to stop talking. To let her walk away. But he really like the brightness in her eyes, the dip of her chin as she settled under his gaze.
“Then you definitely need it to aid your woes” Peter laughed, enamoured already, and begging himself not to be. “And, y’know, if you drink enough of it, you’ll forget the crazy woman who hijacked your evening”
“Not crazy”
“No?”
“Nah, just having a flap” Her laugh was high, catching in her chest. The fabric of her jacket bunched beneath her fingers as they twisted into the fabric meanly, pulling it further over the cradle of her arm.
“I’ll have to take your word for it –“
“Peter,” he supplied quickly, eyes following the dip in her smile, the creases it sketched around her eyes. Her smile lines were pushing him firmly over the edge, his heart stuttering a happy rhythm in his chest.
Shy under his appraisal, an embarrassed huff shifted the hair around her face. A spark of courage sent her gaze back to his. “Hi”
A quiet snort of laughter disrupted his response. The pink of his cheeks spread to his ears. Thank god May was late. “Hi”
The call of her name pulled her attention away, a glance cast over her shoulder. Peter found himself adrift without the shy quirk of her smile, the soft lilt of her voice.
“I should probably head over –”
“Would you – sorry” He winced at the interruption, far too out of practice for what he was about to attempt. “How would you feel about assisting a novice, such as myself, in their exploration of a menu you appear to be an expert of?”
Her teeth pressed into the plush swell of her bottom lip. A new surge of warmth flooded his cheeks.
“Well, given that you’re obviously in desperate need of guidance,” Laughing at her own performance, she inched closer to the table. “I could take pity of you, give you a proper tour of the menu. Friday work for you?”
“Friday’s good”
“Great”
“Great,” Peter parroted her happily, a giddiness bubbling in his chest.
The call of her name was louder this time, impatient, if a little bemused. Her eyes widened dramatically, embarrassed but bright with joy as she scribbled onto a scrap of paper before sliding it across the table. A messy loop of numbers below her name and not one but two kisses. He flushed with pleasured. Not quite sure why this pretty girl kept offering him such bright smiles and her number but equally unwilling to question it.
Spinning on her heel a touch too quickly, she rushed into the path of a waiter, close to toppling the burden of plates in his arms. A ramble of stumbled apologies tumbled from her lips, her smile turning to a grimace as she risked a glance over her shoulder at Peter.
Unable to contain the bubble of laughter in his chest, Peter mouthed “A flap”, his hands fluttering in front of him in a ridiculous imitation that pushed the apples of her cheeks back into a happy smile.
“What in god’s name are you doing?”
Hands falling to the table with a thud that was a little too loud to cover easily, Peter met May’s eye with a grin that was far too wide and buoyant to be explained away.
He was really, really looking forward to Friday.

I don't think words can express how excited we were to write this one, anon.
A night at the fair with the Triple Frontier boys
Tumblr media
By @dameronscopilot:
Picture this—it’s a balmy evening in late September, and your four favourite boys just arrived to pick you up for a night out at the local fair.
Tumblr media
Benny - One night when you’re out for dinner with the boys, you eagerly point out a flyer advertising the annual town fair. Everyone collectively groans—besides Benny. He subtly tears the paper off the wall and stuffs it into his back pocket. And when the week of the fair finally comes around, he surprises you by remembering that you wanted to go, and he drags the rest of the boys along (whether they like it or not).
When nobody else wants to do the silly “old time” photos, Benny obliges your request, grinning from ear to ear when he waltzes out dressed as a cowboy. He also disappears near the end of the night and returns with a ridiculous air-brushed t-shirt that says “Miller’s Good Luck Charm” with a pair of gloves beneath it. (You bet Frankie $20 he won’t wear it to Benny’s next match.) (He does.)
Frankie - After Benny blows nearly $100 trying to win you a stuffed animal from the water gun shootout game, Frankie quietly slips away and makes his way over to the game. With his pockets only $10 lighter ("That was my Fuck You money, Ben," he slyly remarks), he returns with an armful of prizes—most of which you insist he hand out to the small crowd of children now swarming around him—and a small smile on his face. (He gives Benny a ridiculous, sparkly, pink bear as a consolation prize.) And when you eventually make your way over to try your hand at the baseball toss game, he casually puts his hat on your head and coaches you through your throws.
Santiago - Santi spends the ride over to the fair browsing the website, and he’s intrigued when he comes across a flashy graphic claiming that you could “WIN $1000 DOLLARS!” He quickly enters all of you in the contest without consulting anyone else in the car. Unfortunately, when your names are called over to the main stage at the fair midway into the evening, Santiago is horrified to realize that he didn’t read the fine print—the contest is a team-based obstacle course. (Frankie talks his way out of it by claiming his stomach didn’t love the questionable chilli cheese dog he ate, Will and Benny nearly win the whole thing but are somehow bested by a pair of teenagers, and you end up sprawled on top of Santi in top of a pit of foam blocks, crying laughing as he groans about his knees.)
Will - The fair is bustling with people, and you’re disappointed when the crowd prevents you from finding a decent place to watch the fireworks at the end of the night. While the other boys begin to debate an increasingly ridiculous series of military-esque tactics to dodge and weave your way to the front, Will rolls his eyes at them and takes your hand, beckoning for you to follow him. As you make your way to the top of the Ferris wheel for what’s arguably the perfect view, you squint your eyes as Will points out the three tiny dots still animatedly arguing on the ground.
By @dieterbravospr:
Benny - Benny Miller has one goal at the fair: Win you the biggest stuffed animal there. He sets his sights on a massive otter hanging from the poles of the dart game’s tent and he’s found his match for the night. Except, he’s Benny Miller, so it doesn’t take long. The eye of a sharpshooter and the coordination of a fighter comes in handy as the popping of balloon after balloon fills the air, each dart hitting its mark with ease. Bonus: he carries it around for you all night as you sample the various fair foods and candies without so much as a groan.
Frankie - Of course he agreed to go, he always agreed to anything you asked because it made you happy, but you knew deep down he’d rather have spent the night in on the couch with you curled up on his chest watching a movie he wouldn’t pay attention to because he was too busy stealing glances down at you. He doesn’t like crowds, they make him feel trapped, uneasy, his eyes constantly darting to search for threats in the small town you called home. He always needs to be touching you, whether it be a shoulder nudging against you, his fingers toying with the hem of your shirt, or his hand entwined with yours, and you’re happy to provide the solace. When you get stuck on the top of the Ferris wheel it’s his turn to relay the favor, his soft, soothing voice breaking through your heart pounding in your ear as you rely on him to be your eyes until you're closer to the ground. A strong arm holds you tight as lips press to your hair, his hand guiding you out of the little car to the sturdy ground. Next is a stop for a candy apple for you and a beer for him before you make your way over to the other waiting at the water gun game he ensures you win three times over via sabotage and lighthearted threats to his three friends.
Santiago - It’s Santi vs. Benny as they cue up at the ring toss game, the prize being your affection and the stupid little stuffed monkey you want. Santi talks a big game, but Benny smokes him, handing you that dumb little primate with a cocky grin. While he may be disgruntled, he’s not giving up just yet, finding you the lemonade and apple fritters you’d been blabbing about for days, your eyes lighting up as he approached with your favorite snacks. When your hand slides into his he can’t help but shoot a victorious smirk at his adversary, the game once again beginning when you bolted to Benny’s side after an invite to that death trap of a ride his neck surely wouldn’t survive.
Will - The long-suffering elder Miller rolls his eyes at the bickering between Santi and Benny, most of his night spent standing off to the side with Frankie as they kept a watchful eye on the crowds. After your beer goes spilling down your shirt as a result of a careless shoulder check from a definitely drunk passerby, he has to fight the urge to grab the man by the collar and toss him to the side. He focused on you, quickly unbuttoning his overshirt and tossing it around your shoulders as you fretted over your decision to wear white to a fair, your eyes sweetly thanking him before grabbing Santiago as he went to chase down the unfortunate soul who’d been in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Odd Little Shop
youtube
Authors Note: I got really inspired, by watching the SKZ Trailer for their Oddinary Comeback a while ago and came up with this little Story. I really loved the 'Alice in Wonderland' theme,it had going on and really wanted to incorporate it. One character is actually a fusion of two members. Maybe you can find out who it was? I really love the main character and want to make this into a series. What are your thoughts on this?
~L
“Hey guys, look at this alleyway, it looks so cool! Can we go there?” I asked curiously as I stopped in front of the beginning of the narrow street. Even though it was in the middle of the afternoon, it was almost time for a good coffee, Only a minimal amount of light reached the cobbled ground. It was so narrow that no car in the world could pass through it. Not only that, but you couldn’t see where this alleyway led to because it had many curves and squiggles to itself. I found it quite intriguing but my friends didn’t seem to be that interested. “Raeca, we’ve been on our feet for hours, I don’t know about Maya, but I definitely need a break. You know what? If you really want to go and explore this street, then go. We’ll find a cafe and rest.” Lola said with a strained voice. Dang! She really didn’t have any more strength.
Even though I really didn’t want to leave my friends, I felt so curious about this little street. The longer I stared down the alleyway the more I felt a pull towards it. I just couldn’t go into a cafe without knowing what was going on in that street. “Sorry but it’s just so tempting. Save a place for me at the cafe. I‘ll be back in no time!” I shot my best apologetic smile towards my two friends and without a second word I started walking into the mysterious alleyway. In the beginning all the houses were painted white and looked very modern but after a while of walking my surroundings started to change.
Instead of apartment blocks in plain white, little huts made out of wood lined the street. The sun was now shining directly on the ground and everything around me looked just so cozy and comfortable. And finally after a good 15 minutes of walking, I saw the end of the alley. This alley was indeed a dead end! But there was not a wall or anything at the end,no. At the end of the street stood a little wooden shopping hut. It was a bit lopsided and looked very old and not that well taken care of, but I had to admit that it had its own charme. As I got nearer to the cute little hut, I could see an old lady through the windows, which had definitely not been cleaned in a long time. She was sitting behind the counter, knitting a hat out of white yarn and smiling to herself. She looked like she was at peace and very satisfied with what she was doing at the moment.
I just had to go in there and find out what the hut looked like from inside.
As I pushed the door open, the little golden bell rang above my head and the old lady looked up from her knitting project. “Oh hello my dear. What a wonderful thing, that you came to visit our little shop today. We unfortunately don’t have many customers, you know?” The old lady smiled at me, then she continued. “Please have a look around and take your time. I hope you will find something you like!” “I will, thank you very much!”I answered. I gave her a smile back and started browsing through the shelves.
This tiny store had a little bit of everything, from cute home decorations made out of wood, to old china that looked like it was made in the 17th century. But what caught my attention were the doll-like figures in the centre of the room, presented on a mahogany table. There were eight in total. The figures looked like normal boys, but each of them had a detail of an animal to them. May it be ears, tail or paws, every single one had something special to them.
As I was inspecting the little figures I caught sight of myself in the mirror and was shocked to see myself in this kind of state. My hair was disheveled from walking all day and my mascara started to form panda eyes. I could not continue to look like that. “Excuse me miss” I spoke to the old lady who had started to knit again “could I use your bathroom by any chance?”. I hoped there was one in this old building. “Of course my love, the bathroom is just around that corner.” She looked up and pointed towards a hallway that was located straight across the entrance door. I thanked her and walked into the dimly lit hallway. The hallway wasn’t decorated at all, just the little lamp hanging from the ceiling and two doors. The left one was located a bit farther away from me than the right one. ‘Well I guess the right one it is’, I thought to myself and opened the door but what I saw was most definitely not a bathroom. The floor of the room was completely gone and was replaced with absolute darkness, almost like a black hole. In the air of the room though, everything was floating. Tables, chairs, clocks, lamps and paintings were floating around like gravity wasn’t a thing anymore.
I immediately closed the door with a thump and just stood there in complete shock. My brain could not wrap itself around the image that I just saw. I wanted to take another look but I was too scared to reopen the door, so I just decided to peek through the keyhole. What a bad decision. When I looked through the hole I was not met with this weird room but with an eye that did not look like mine. This round eye had such a dark color that you could hardly differentiate between iris and pupil. Because of shock I automatically stumbled back from the door and hit my back on the wall.
With a terrified expression I saw the door being opened by the human that was behind that door. When the door was fully opened, I could see this man just floating above the blackness where the floor was supposed to be. He looked the same age as me but he was a few centimeters taller. The oddest thing about him though was his face. Not that it was ugly, no, but this smile that was etched on him was full of haziness, almost a crazy smile. The other thing was his eyes. Even though I had already seen one of them, the other was totally different. It was an icy blue that was almost white. The only thing being the same was the round eye shape.
With a strange sparkle in his eyes he began to speak “Hello m’lady. Did your parents never teach you to knock first, before opening a door?” He giggled mischievously. “I-I thought this was the b-b-bathroom, I’m so sorry!” I stuttered, my back still pressed against the wall. My eyes flickered from his face to his feet, still shocked that he could just float above a black hole like it was normal. Well it was probably normal, for him at least. He most likely noticed my flickering eyes, because in the next second he reached out to me, grabbed both of my wrists and pulled me into the room. Not knowing how to react I just shut my eyes and let out a long, high pitched scream, fearing that I will now fall into the darkness and never see the surface of the earth again. But the sensation of falling didn’t occur. Instead the man, who was still holding my wrists, burst out in a fit of laughter. “Hahahaha. You should’ve seen your face when I pulled you in the room, it was so incredibly funny!”.
To check if I was still okay, I opened my eyes very slowly. I held my breath when I realised I was now floating in the room as well. I did not scream, because this man would’ve probably laughed at me again. “What, cat’s got your tongue?” He said in a teasing tone. “N-nooo?... I-” “What is going on here?” I was interrupted by the old lady. “Fenix, how many times have I told you to not change the rooms when a customer enters! We already have a low customer rate and yet you decide to scare them away anyway!” The man, apparently named Fenix, started to pout. “But Mrs. Hansley it’s more fun for me this way.” “But it’s not funny for our clients in the slightest, come here my dear let me help you. I am so so sorry!” The old lady reached out her wrinkly hand to me and I gladly took hers in mine and let me be pulled to the hallway again. The landing was a bit rough as I landed on my behind but Mrs. Hansley helped me up right away.
She shot a glare in the direction of a sad looking Fenix and escorted me back to the front of the store under constant apologies from her side. I tried to soothe her worries as best as I could but that was very hard, considering me being still very shaken up from what just happened. As a final apology from her I got a brown box with a red bow on top. “Please take this with you. I hope you can forgive me and Fenix. He can be a little too mischievous at times. And please take the right door when you leave, it’s the fastest way back.”. I nodded and smiled at her and thanked her again for being such a nice woman, not wanting to bring Fenix up again.
I used the door that I was told to use and immediately stepped into the street where I last saw my friends before we parted ways. How was this possible? After a few seconds I spotted them in an outdoor cafe and speedily walked towards them. Before the walk though, I made sure to put the brown box into the backpack I was wearing. “Hey y’all, I’m so sorry that it took so long, the alleyway was longer than I expected.” I stated with an apologetic look on my face. My friends just looked at me in confusion. “What do you mean? You were only gone for a couple minutes.”

A Thousand Days With You (2)
Series Master list
"We're going to assess your level so we can assign you a grade," Satoru says, stretching his arms out. He went out and got a couple of curses for Kagome to exorcise. Normally he'd do a field mission and observe, but Kagome is a special case. He spent pretty much all last night browsing through the Gojo library for any information on barriers. None of the books he skimmed detailed the barrier Kagome put up at that school.
"I'm being graded? I thought I wasn't a student. Am I going to be tested, too?" Kagome tightens her fingers around her bow. Her long black hair is pulled into a high ponytail, showing off the curves of her neck and bringing more attention to her high cheekbones.
Satoru smirks, slightly amused at her questioning, but more intrigued that a bow is her weapon of choice. "Might give you some pointers if you need it. But nah, this is more to see what level of curses you can exorcise." He holds up one finger. "You got your special grade curses at the top. There are only four special grade sorcerers."
"What's the lowest grade?"
"Four. We don't want to put a grade four sorcerer up against a level one curse. So, in order to assess where you are, I got a variety of curses here. Even got a special grade one if we get that far." He shrugs. Chances are they won't get that far. His eyes peruse the length of her body, not that she knows he is checking her out with his bandages on. There's strength to her body. He does not need the six eyes to tell him that, but there is also a delicate aura around her that makes him think fighting is not her strength.
And that skirt is damn near scandalous.
Kagome nods, not fazed by his explanation. She does not have that crazy look in her eyes like his students. All good sorcerers have a bit of crazy to them. They have to. Comes with the job of seeing humanity's worst.
"Alrighty, we'll start our way up." He walks over to the cage and lets the fly head out. For extra measure, he put up a veil so no one will get hurt by any stray attacks. The fly head goes down in a split of a second. "... Okay, we'll move on then." He clucks his tongue along the roof of his mouth.
Her instincts are good. Reaction speed too.
"You always use a bow?" he questions as he lets out the level three curse, who goes down just as quickly as the last one.
"I prefer it. If I need to use a sword I can, but I'm better with long distance." Kagome wrinkles her nose and waits oh so patiently for him to let the next curse out.
"Thinking maybe we should have done a field mission after all." He skips the other grade and goes for the grade one. This one shouldn't go down with one blow, but he's opened to being wrong. The curse slinks out and darts towards Kagome. It's big bug eyes and tusks for teeth are the stuff of nightmares.
Without missing a beat, Kagome notches the arrow and exorcizes the curse just as easily as the others.
Well... huh?
Satoru crosses his arms and tilts his head to the side. Perhaps he should take her on a mission instead. Just letting the curses out seems to be too easy for her. It won't be that easy in the real world.
"Satoru," Kagome says, "I'm good for us to keep going."
He snorts. "Yeah, I can see that. Just thinking that this isn't giving you a challenge." He grabs the cage, holding the special grade, and holds out a hand. "To better mimic what it might be like out on the field, I'm gonna release this one further out and you'll need to track him down." Of course, he'll be close by. Megumi would never forgive him if he let a special grade kill his teacher.
Kagome shrugs, so he takes that as her acceptance to proceed. He releases the curse further out. A vengeful mother curse. Its body reeks, half of its face looks as though someone poured acid on it. The curse takes off, most likely to get away from him or to go after Kagome. Satoru heads back to where he left Kagome and keeps a safe distance as he watches her.
She stands in the clearing for a bit and then strolls further into the woods as though she left her picnic basket somewhere.
Calm.
Slightly indifferent.
There are different levels of crazy. Hers is more subtle.
The curse finds her first. Satoru's muscle tense. If need be, he'll step in.
"Give him back," the curse mutters in a warbled spiel. "Back."
Kagome lowers her bow as the curse flashes in front of her.
Shit. Why the hell would she lower her weapon? He holds out his hand, preparing to shoot off a red, but his vision goes...pink? His six eyes can't see anything but a blinding pink. It does not feel like cursed energy.
Kagome?
Did she do this?
When the light subsides, the curse lies on the ground. Its skin is healthy. Whole. He moves closer as the curse's body starts to fade away. It almost looks human now.
"I felt bad for it," Kagome says, softly. "It was in a lot of pain. The others weren't like that, but this one was hurting."
He opens his mouth and then closes it. His mind can't comprehend what he is hearing. What he is seeing. The curse fades away with a smile on it's no longer acidified face.
"This is not cursed energy," he says, a bit weak to his own ears. "I'm not sure what you are using, but—"
"I'm a priestess," she says, "I don't have cursed energy. Not even gramps has it and he can't even do a sutra properly." Kagome yawns and stretches her arms up. "So, is that it?"
Is that it?
Satoru laughs. It's a good thing he met her first and not one of those Zenin's. "You're cute," he coos, leaning over to poke her cheek. Her face goes red as she swats his hand away. "Shy?"
"I don't get involved with coworkers," she quips.
"Technically, you haven't accepted the job yet..."
"Because I haven't decided yet."
"Sooo, what you are saying is you want to get involved with me?"
Her mouth drops and she splutters. "That is not what I'm saying! You are so..." she looks up at the sky as if to ask it for answers. "Just forget about it. Is that it?"
"Well...it was supposed to last us a lot longer than it did. Didn't think you would be one-shotting every curse." He pulls out his phone and scrolls through his schedule. "We could do a field mission early, get it over with and I could evaluate how you do in a less controlled environment."
"That's fine. I don't mind getting rid of some of the curses, but am I going to be a teacher here or am I going to be out in the field?"
"Do you just want to be a teacher? You seem like a hands on kind of woman." He puts his phone back in his pocket and looks her over once more.
She shifts her weight to one side and ponders his question. "Hmm, being a teacher is not as dangerous. Mama is definitely over me getting into situations, but it also doesn't sit right with me that we are sending children out to handle these things. Like why aren't there more sorcerers out working the field?"
"Dead," he says matter of factually. "There's way more curse users... people that use their cursed energy to harm others and not help the general population with decreasing the number of curses." No use in sugar coating it. She isn't fazed by the curses, so something tells him that Kagome has more experience than she is letting on.
"Let's do the field mission. I can't sleep at night knowing there's something I could be doing to help." She sighs. "I know I said I could use a sword, but I am a bit rusty. Haven't had any reason to use one in a long time."
"If you weren't fighting curses, then what were you fighting?"
She nibbles on her bottom lip. "Something similar?"
"Not good enough," he says cheerily, as though they are discussing the weather. If there is something else out there, then he needs to know about it. "Yesterday you mentioned knowing someone that could warp like me. Did their energy feel similar to mine?" Could it be that she fought something other than a curse? Or did she not have the proper terminology to name what she was fighting?
Kagome squints at him. "Do you need me to heal your eyes? I'm not sure how you haven't ran into anything yet with those bandages."
"Nice try. Did their energy feel similar to mine?" He bends at the waist, crowding her space. She's hiding something and he is nothing but a persistent man. He can wear her down if need be.
"Sure," she says with an eye roll. "Now, do you need me to heal your eyes before we head out or not?"
"I'm not hurt. I wear this to help lessen the information I take in. Special eyes and all." So, she can heal too, that's good to know. As frustrating as it is, the higher-ups may be more agreeable to her joining with those qualifications.
"So, you are willingly wearing those bandages?"
"Did you want to see my eyes?" he teases as he dispels the veil.
"No, I just think the bandages are tacky," she replies without any hint of malice. "Since it's more of a preventive measure, maybe a blindfold would work best?" she murmurs the last part to herself. Kagome pats his arm. "Don't worry, I'll get you something that would work better. I can't imagine how annoying that must be to put on and take off."
"... Thanks?" His mind tries to make sense of the whiplash of her emotions. How did she turn the conversation around to getting him better eyewear?
"Can we stop and get something to eat before the mission? Forgot to eat breakfast today." She matches his strides, completely at ease with the thought of facing more curses.
Maybe she does have a few screws loose.
"I could go for a bake potato," he admits. "You know I will only step in if I think you are going to be killed."
"Isn't that the point of an evaluation?" She pulls out her phone and frowns at whatever message she received. Satoru uses his height to his advantage and glances at her phone.
"Didn't tell your boyfriend you would be with me?" he questions, voice toeing the lines between playful and annoyed. Which is stupid. He doesn't know her. Why should he care if she has a boyfriend?
"Hojo-kun doesn't understand the words no and we don't work." She types off a retort, not bothering to look at him. "But no, he's not my boyfriend."
"Do you have one?"
"A boyfriend?" She yawns. "That sounds like a pain."
He hums in acknowledgment. A boyfriend would be a real pain in the ass.
Wait.
He stops. Kagome walks ahead and turns to face him. "Something wrong?" She reaches for an arrow. Satoru shakes his head.
"No, nothing is wrong. Just forgot something is all."
Like his damn sanity, or what's left of it. There is no way he is happy about her not having a boyfriend. It's not like he wants to fill that role. Women are trouble. Love is the worst. And like she said earlier, getting involved with coworkers is always so damn messy. Too many sorcerers get out of the field or die because they were too worried about someone else.
"There's some spots close by we can walk to and then I'll have Ijichi swing around and take us to the spot."
"Ijichi?"
"Driver."
"Ah. Is he your personal driver, or does he take the students to their missions as well?"
"Occasionally he'll take the students, but for the most part, he drives me around. If you're any good, then I might share my driver with you."
"But why do you need a driver if you can just warp wherever you want?"
"There's conditions to it." He places his hand on her lower back as they go down the steps. He's only helping her out in case she trips. "Everyone has a pool of cursed energy to pull from. You don't want to be low on your output and get jumped or caught by a curse stronger than you."
"Oh. And without cursed energy, you can't do as much damage then?"
"Well, if you need cursed energy to exorcise a curse, you would have a hard time doing so if you run out."
"... But I don't use cursed energy," she murmurs, deep in thought.
He keeps silent, pretending to not have heard her. Whatever she has doesn't feel like cursed energy. It feels purer. Warm. He bites the inside of his cheek. And it does wicked things to him when she wraps it around him. He peeks a glance at her. A priestess, huh? The notion is so farfetched, but at the same time it holds up.
He doesn't have a choice but to believe her at face value for now.
They don't say anything else on the walk to the restaurant. He pays for both of them, ignoring the way she tries to shove money into his hands. It's cute. She thinks one meal is going to set him back. For now, he allows her to lead the conversation. If he wants to get more information out of her, he needs to play the long game. She is not his enemy, and he is fine with coaxing the information out of her.
She doesn't stop trying to pay him back until they leave the restaurant and reach their destination.
"Alright, I'll hang out inside the veil with you since this is a special grade," Satoru says, lifting his hand.
"I can put a barrier up," Kagome says, patting his arm as if to console him. "You put one up earlier."
His brows bunch together. "Do you not like my veils?"
"I just don't want you to run out of cursed energy in case something happens. Besides, a barrier is nothing." She smiles, so brightly that he can't even muster up a crumb of laughter at her thinking he would ever run out of cursed energy. "You can wait here. This shouldn't take too long." She stretches her arms up and heads into the building with a pep in her step.
Satoru frowns. There is a barrier in place. He sees the energy pulsating. What he can't see is outside the veil, which should hopefully mean no one can see inside either. But more concerning is Kagome set up this barrier without so much of a flick of her wrist or an incantation. It feels different from the one she put up at the school.
Can she change the properties of her barriers?
Is it that different from a curtain Ijichi could put up?
He pulls out his phone and responds to some messages. Just as he is about to switch over to a game to play, Kagome comes out of the building looking as unfazed as she did when she went in.
"All done?" Surprise coats his words. That was a special grade, and she's done already?
"Yep! Now that you're done evaluating me, are we going to discuss how I'm supposed to help the students?"
"Umm... we can start with how your barriers work. Most of them will have a manager like Ijichi around to put the veil up, but it wouldn't hurt for them to know how to do one themselves. And your barriers also hurt the curses if they try to leave?"
"Yeah, it should burn them if they try to leave or if they try to enter." She drops the barrier around them and the sudden sound of cars and people talking hits him like a shock wave. "I could do that and maybe meditation. It helps me with my output, so it might help them increase how much cursed energy they have."
"You are welcome to try, but as far as I know, you have as much cursed energy as you are born with. It's how you use your cursed technique that helps you in battle." Also, he hasn't said a damn thing to Yaga yet about his latest find. Not that he foresees Yaga saying no. And if he does, well, he's Gojo Satoru, he can throw his name around if need be.
"I'm not starting Monday, though. I can't just up and quit at the school. That would be pretty rude." She talks with her hands as they make their way over to where Ijichi is waiting for them. Ijichi looks at Kagome with so much longing behind his glasses that Satoru wants to pluck his eyes out.
On second thought, Ijichi is not allowed to drive Kagome around anywhere.
"Shall we head to the next mission?" Ijichi asks, getting the door for Kagome. He grimaces when he sees Satoru, and Satoru takes that personally, so he crowds Ijichi's personal space for good measure.
"Can we stop by the shrine? It's not too far from him?"
"What shrine?" Satoru climbs into the back seat and manspreads, smiling to himself when Kagome huffs and shoves his legs away.
"Higurashi shrine. I totally forgot to stop by yesterday and check on something. It'll only take a second."
"Checking on a blessing?"
She worries her bottom lip. "Okay, this is going to sound weird, and I don't mean to say it in that whole serial killer way."
Now she has his attention.
"But there's these weird fingers my gramps brought back with him, and they are downright evil, so I need to check on the seals."
Satoru scratches his head. Did she say evil fingers? Is she talking about what he hopes she isn't talking about? He tilts his head to the side. "Serious question. Do you always fight in a skirt?"
Kagome glances at her legs. Her long, wonderfully toned legs that shouldn't be so distracting. "Easier than fighting in jeans."
He nods his head in understanding. Got it. He'll put in a request for a floor length uniform.

The Dreadnoughts - Roll and Go (2022) / Green Willow (2023) double album review
For the first English post of this blog, why not make a review of my new favourite band's last two albums? It's a bit late, I know, I originally wanted to make one about "Roll and Go", but never got around to do it, so when I heard that a new album is coming out this year, I thought "hey, now is the time to combine the two reviews into one post!" And I'm still freakin' late with this again!
But anyway, let's start the story from the beginning.
At least a decade ago, the first two songs I've heard from The Dreadnoughts were "Sleep Is For The Weak" and "Randy-Dandy-Oh" - no idea whether I found them randomly or someone showed them to me, but I liked both… and then kinda forgot to listen to any of their other songs for a while 😄 Then, fast-forward to approximately early 2020, when at work I was browsing for music, listened to one of the previously mentioned two and through the "related songs" links, found "Gintlemen's Club" (unsurprisingly from the same 2011 album "Polka's Not Dead")…and BAM! Immediately I was like "This is awesome, why haven't I listened to them for ages? Let's discover more!" And I did… and that's why I was anticipating the 2022 spring release of the new album Roll and Go even more. Let's see how it turned out:
Tumblr media
ROLL AND GO (release date: June 24, 2022)
1 - Cider Jar [7/10] Hold up, a booze-infused version of "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"? That's ridiculously brilliant! 😃 Cider Jar serves as a short intro to the album and the closing "arr-oh-arr" just flows right on to the next track, which…
2 - Cider Holiday [7.5/10] …was the first track released from the album and in all honesty, did not hit me in the sweet spot back then, but has grown on me since. The prose-like bridge part gives it a unique flavour, and speaking of flavour, the song itself just makes me wanna drink cider or visit the West Country. Or both, preferably.
3 - The Rodney Rocket [8/10] You never know where artists can find an inspiration for a song. Sometimes, it might be a video about an old alcoholic Canadian fella having fun with some snowy extreme sports in Rodney, Ontario 😁 The Rodney Rocket is easy to sing (mostly due to its percussion-heavy background and the L-C-B-O chant in the chorus), plus the tempo changes well along with the story - the silly-sounding words in the lyrics (dickered, hullabaloo) and a callback to "Fire Marshal Willy" are just the icing on the cake. What's not to like?
4 - Problem [10/10] Second track to come out as a single and I instantly loved it. Somehow it's just perfect: the repeating "Problem" at the end of lines, occasionally replaced by various - and hilarious! - sound effects, both the beat and the inserted Polish lyrics obviously referencing Sleep Is For the Weak, the backstory of the song, it all just culminates in this masterpiece. The music video is weird enough, although it does not reach such heights, but anyway, who the fuck cares, we are here to listen to songs, not watch them. Problem?
5 - Brisbane Harbour [8.5/10] A worthy continuation of true sea shanties like "Whup! Jamboree" and "Eliza Lee", and one which surely makes any listener's fingers and feet tap to the rhythm.
6 - Battleford 1885 [8/10] The shortest "normal" track on the album, and its title was intriguing to me when I first saw it - turns out, music can be educational (duh), because Battleford 1885 sheds some light on a tragic event of indigenous people in Canada (here's the post about the background of the song). Oh, and the ascending drum in the background of the bridge is just… *chef's kiss*
Tumblr media
7 - The Storm [9/10] Beautiful, just beautiful, equally eerie and empowering, with an instrumental break inspired by Greek bouzouki tunes. If the previous song was about the story of oppressed people rising up against their masters, then this one puts you right in those people's mindset. Well done. And I'll be forever grateful for the Substack post about The Storm for introducing Smokey Bastard's "Baba Yaga" to me, I fell in love at first listening.
8 - Vicki's Polka [7.5/10] Judging by the title only, I thought this was going to be the obligatory instrumental track, but then again, I might have been misled by "Clavdia's Waltz". Instead, Vicki's Polka is rather a love story spanning decades, featuring references to the band's 2010 hit "Polka Never Dies" and the popular folk song "Who Stole the Keeshka?". Assisted by some top folk musicians, the bounciness of this true polka track slows down only near the end, when it's time to say goodbye to the titular Vicki, sadly taken away by the Covid-19 pandemic. Goddamnit, 2020.
9 - Scrumpy-O [8/10] You've been listening to the songs of the album in order and you're missing the amount of alcohol in the lyrics for a while? Worry not, Scrumpy-O definitely has your back. Just grab some locally made and/or rough cider (that's what "scrumpy" means), learn the words to the chorus, and raise your bottle to the sky!
10 - Tuika [7/10] Now this is the instrumental track I thought Vicki's Polka was gonna be. The frequently changing speed of the song makes you imagine dancing arm-in-arm with someone at one moment, then jumping into a mosh pit at another. (P.s.: if anyone has an idea what the title means, let me know, I could only find a politician from American Samoa by this name.)
11 - Dusty Ground [9/10] One of my favourites from the album, a very well executed song. Listen to how the tempo decelerates almost into melancholy in the third verse and then turns back up for the last chorus, just fantastic. The lyrics… likewise. If I'm not mistaken, they are meant to convey the transience of life via a clever metaphor: the ever-thirsty ground, which swallows us up like water. Well, all right, I might have taken a peek at the origin story of the track ;)
12 - Bold Reilly [5.5/10] Honestly, out of the thirteen tracks, this is the song that resonated the least with me. I wouldn't say it's bad or anything, just… Too repetitive? Too slow? I don't know. Also, being "the worst song of a Dreadnoughts album" is still a pretty high level 😁 And it has a reference to Randy Dandy-Oh, nice!
13 - Roll and Go [8.5/10] For some reason, I classified the trio of The Storm, Dusty Ground, and this closing track as giving the same vibes - no idea why I feel the similarity, at the very least Dusty Ground is notably quicker. Anyway, all three songs are unique enough for me to love each of them. Roll and Go provides a fine closure to this wonderful album: the musical background resembles a marching band (here I am giving praise to the percussion section yet again 👏), the lyrics emanate the feeling of brotherhood, and the ending slowly fades with the promise of a "fine and lucky day". Amen to that!
Overall: this was easily the release of the year for me. Usually when I listen to an entire album for the first time, the tracks don't really have their own "identity" in the beginning, and the whole thing is just a raw, big mess. Not this time! A few tracks stood out instantly and I grew to love the rest even more. Roll and Go turning out to be that awesome, given the difficulties the band had to face while recording, just proves how talented these guys are. I'll be sure to mention this album when people ask me about my favourites. Verdict: 8.5/10
Tumblr media
GREEN WILLOW (release date: March 14, 2023)
1 - We Shepherds are the Best of Men [8/10] A proper start to the album, with a great rhythm and an even better chorus. Apparently, it's an older folk piece, which has a few versions with different lyrics, but The Dreadnoughts are the first "modern" band to cover it. And oh boy, they did it well! (One small caveat though: the grammar nazi inside me is so bothered by the "We drinks our liquor freely and pays before we go" part every time 😅)
2 - Hej Sokoły (Zal za Ukraina) [9.5/10] I see two great reasons why this track was chosen as the initial single of the album. Firstly, this song is an absolute earworm. I mean, so dangerously addictive, it can be stuck in your head for a day! Secondly, it's dedicated to the people fighting for Ukraine, and whoever has listened to The Dreadnoughts' songs knows that Eastern Europe has a special place in their pool of inpsirations. Accordingly, Hey Sokoły covers a popular old Polish-Ukrainian folk song, and frankly, I just can't ever get enough of Polish lyrics in the band's songs - no wonder the band fell in love with the suggestion of this cover. Highlight: as the last verse slows down and then builds up into the energetic last chorus… goosebumps, goosebumps every time.
3 - Rigs of the Time [7/10] It's like a good worker who does not yearn for promotion but is never in danger of getting laid off - not necessarily oustanding in his field, but someone who is trustworthy and does his job well. It has a message and a great chorus. You need tracks like this on your album. (Ironically, the song is about dishonest tradesmen, but still, that's the metaphor I chose. Also, the whole "blaming the rising prices on the war" thing is too real nowadays.)
4 - Roll the Old Chariot Along [8.5/10] This song is apparently covered by a few artists, but I don't recall hearing it before I listened to the album - only since then, but for that, the almighty Algorithm might be the one to "blame". Anyway, I remember instantly liking it upon the first listening and my opinion remains unchanged: what a fantastic and catchy tune! "And we'll all hang on behind!" (P.s.: Lads, there's a missing verse - and some other confusion - of the lyrics on the Bandcamp page.)
5 - The Foggy Dew [7/10] A classic Irish ballad, full of historical references (one of which could even be meant as a hint to "The Bay of Suvla"), so far it was only familiar to me because Dropkick Murphys used it as the opening instrumental for their shows (The Chieftains version to be exact). The lack of repeated parts and intricate rhythm of the verses makes it very difficult to sing along, but nevertheless it's a beautiful rendition.
Tumblr media
6 - Twankidillo [7.5/10] "Half of you are going to hate it, it’s fucking weird." That's the premise I've read before I even listened to the song… and I didn't even mention the strange title. 😄 *1st listening*: They were right, what the hell is this? *2nd listening*: Okay, it IS weird, but certainly catchy… *3rd listening*: "Here's to old coal, and to young coal and to no coal at aaaaaaaaallll!" Yep, it grows on you. It's another cover of a traditional folk song (like all tracks except one), and if you haven't noticed, the lyrics also contain a reference to the album name. Yay!
7 - Spanish Ladies [7/10] Sorry guys, I have absolutely been in love with Sarah Blasko's version of this song for years, and I don't think anything can change that. To be fair though, this cover is more sea shanty-esque, if you close your eyes, you can almost visualize the crew hauling ropes or heaving the capstan around.
8 - The Unquiet Grave [8/10] Upon seeing the tracklist, this was the title that stood out the most for me - and damn, it did not disappoint, especially storywise. This tale of love beyond the grave has been sung for centuries, I haven't heard it before, but I must say that The Dreadnoughts have really managed to capture the appropriate eerie vibe which surely gives you the chills. (Bonus funfact for anyone who's familiar with the band's discography: this track was first intended for the 2017 album "Foreign Skies".)
9 - Apple Tree Wassail [8.5/10] Don't believe Google Translate saying "wassail" is an Arabic word, this catchy track is actually a blessing ritual for apple trees in hope of a good crop to make cider from… although the mental image in my head is stuck halfway between an orchard and a mosh pit due to the song's fast pace. Hell, I hope at some point I'll have the chance to hear it live and jump around like a maniac. (Please come to Hungary!) (P.s.: The "Let every man drink up his glass" line is possibly a callback to "Spanish Ladies", am I right?)
10 - Roll Northumbria (Loud Version, sometimes called "Heavy Version") [7.5/10] Green Willow features nine covers of traditional folk pieces and a reboot of one of the band's earlier songs… yep, this closing track is the reboot one. What I said previously about Spanish Ladies, can be applied here as well - I like the original so much that no newer cover can surpass that, even if it's from the same band. Also, I think the original's slow and dark vibe is more fitting to the topic of the song, but if there's one place where the heavy/loud version could be used, it's concerts. The final drum beats provide a great ending to the album.
Overall: When I first listened to the entire album, I thought "maybe Roll and Go set the bar too high", although my reception of Green Willow has improved well since then, as it can be seen in the ratings. A shorter collection of tracks than its predecessor, but it has a bit of everything from patriotic through silly to haunting, while covering well-known and lesser-known folk songs. I know an album a year would probably be too much to ask, so I'll just patiently wait for some fresh stuff from The Dreadnoughts! Verdict: 8/10
Thanks for reading! 😊

What’re your favorite games (and why if you want to answer that part)
<TSF> backgammon, and mens erger je niet, are pretty fun! i used to play backgammon, as well as puzzle games, with my administrator, all the time...
<TSF> we used to go into the market, and offer people bills if they won against us. they were practically a master at everything they showed me... i was the one who usually had to pay up~
<TSF> ...for videogames, i, uh, obviously enjoy phighting. and terraria, and...splatoon....i guess...? i know i sort of, have a sort of, ~gamer persona~, but i'll admit, i don't really, play any games...
<BVQT> I greatly enjoy sudoku! And especially the "harder" variations. So far I have found Hyper Sudoku and Jigsaw Sudoku the most amusing so far.
<BVQT> I also find myself enjoying many sports games! Variations of 'football' especially.
<BVQT> Ah. Videogames also count? Well...
<BVQT> I enjoy Minecraft greatly. The slow-burn worldbuilding interests me massively and I appreciate the lengths that they go to enure that the subjects mentioned are interesting for everyone. I wish that the education edition was available on PC! I would love to play mostly unmodded Minecraft with alchemy available to me.
<BVQT> I also enjoy Terraria. The gratuitous gore is a bit of a turn-off at times especially considering the lag it causes. And there are a great deal of aspects that utterly disgust me. But it is incredibly fun otherwise! The lore is intriguing even if it is often decanonized for little to no reason. I do wish that they finished Terraria: Otherworld. Even if it was sort of a Starbound clone wasn't it?
<BVQT> Speaking of! I massively enjoy Starbound! Though sometimes the worlds feel too closed off and the universe itself too open to feel very immersive it is incredibly fun and I like it! I could spend hours upon hours simply building and browsing its many interesting mods! Even the. less appropriate ones have their own charm and interesting quirks! The community is so dedicated to making updates for a long-forgotten game I am honestly impressed.
<BVQT> I also enjoy Don't Starve though I have already mentioned that earlier here. It is fun! If a bit annoying to handle.
<GRP> OOH OHH ME NEXT
<GRP> I LOVE BALL GAME. and JELLYFISHSPEARFISHING!!!!!! ITS FUN!!! AND NOT JUST BC TABBY INVENTED IT but mostly that :} tabbys so good at gaming
<GRP> uhhhh i dont rlly like amny videogames to be honest... sorry i am not a #epic #gamer. I LOVE phighting tho!!! phunny!!!!!! me and tabby always get mvp in itits funnn
<APIS> Man, Phighting IS fun!
<APIS> You guys already know I don't like sports... Puzzle games are really fun! A digital puzzle game I've been getting into lately is Puyo Puyo. It's, like.. okay...
<APIS> I mean, the story's really funny, to be honest. Like, who even thought of this stuff??? I really like Amitie, and Ringo... they're cute. Like Goldy and I!
<WM> I do notte ofte playye videyogaymes.. Splatty is funne.
<UPSILON> I'm the same as my beloved. I just don't really see the appeal... I tried playing some online games, but they're just - why is it that no matter how long I play, everyone else is always fancier than me!? It's absurd-!
<FS> ........
<FS> i play a little of everything, i guess...
<FS> totk is... it's fine. the physics are uncomfortable, and hard to get used to, since everything's so floaty sometimes, but it's silly. i prefer botw's story... but if i had to choose a zelda game i really liked, it'd be triforce heroes, or maybe spirit tracks. all zelda games have... problems.... but they're fun.
<FS> splatoon's also pretty fun. i like th story. wish the translations weren't so terrible... shoutout to the community for fixing them, jeez.
<FS> phighting is pretty fun. i'm planning on trying out banhammer, even if i don't like his character. i can reclaim him.
<FS> starbound's fun... wish you could make yourself have a specific profession, like your crewmembers do. and wish you could bring tailors with you without mods...
<FS> ...i really like baba is you...
<FS> s fun... like baba...

HOPIUM
Jenny was not ready to spend her whole life like this. Working a boring, miserable job which paid so little that she could barely afford treating herself to a brunch at her favorite café a couple times a month. These brunches were always a sort of celebration for her, the only moments when she felt absolutely careless and free, and as successful as anyone else. However, this feeling was rather quick to subside after the brunch was over, and Jenny hopped on a metro where she inevitably started scrolling her social media feed.
First of all, they were rich. Posing in expensive garments, traveling to tropical islands, decorating their luxurious homes. Jenny knew that with rich, there came beautiful: getting her body in the best shape, changing her hair, buying high quality skincare and makeup. She yearned for that life. She wanted it so badly that she dreamt that one day she would wake up to be just like them. But HOW did they do it exactly?
Jenny took a quick glance at the people scurrying back and forth at the metro station. Tired, weary - nothing like the women from the other side of the screen. No wonder - these women have never set their foot in the underground, they used expensive cars and took cabs. Funny, Jenny thought, how she believed she was happy when she was a teenager, studying to become a makeup artist, having no money to spend. She did not even think about the concept of money back then, she had a boyfriend and some friends, she had her favorite music and reality shows, and she was not worried about anything apart from failing her exams. Now, she realised, it was nothing but foolish.
Before going to sleep, Jenny was browsing through her social media, until suddenly something unusual happened. She was checking the videos of a popular astrologist whom she has been following for a long time, and in between of the daily horoscope astrologist squeezed in a promo of the page of some brown-haired, friendly-looking woman.
Apparently, this woman was some sort of a medium, someone who could transform other people spiritually - once and for all. Intrigued, Jenny went to her page. Transformation was something that would come in very handy, she thought. Actually, that was exactly what she was looking for.
The page greeted Jenny with clean, radiant luxury. From the lady’s bio it was clear that she was some kind of a spiritual guide. She lived overseas in a beautiful apartment overlooking a skyline of a famous western city. She wore expensive jewelry and clothes, her car was upholstered with posh brown leather. Her life seemed entirely worryless: travelling, going out dressed like a red carpet celebrity, taking part in stylish photoshoots. She was making memories.
Jenny opened this lady’s updates from today. Apparently, she had been promoting her product: a private chat about how you can magically transform your life. She claimed that her success was achieved by positive, playful mindset, the feeling of connection with the universe, the flow state. She had a special gift - she was a powerful mentor who could direct her divine energy towards you and lead you through the shortcut to great abundance hidden somewhere in the folds of reality. And you could find out how to make your dreams come true, too. You just needed to learn from her by getting access to this private chat with her voice and video messages. Only limited access was available, so her followers should have been grateful for the opportunity to get in such a close contact with the guru.
These posts were followed by some screenshots, apparently from her fans: various women seemed utterly exalted, praising their mentor for opening up some new magical side to them. They never felt so powerful, so alive. And funny enough, some wonders started happening to them: they multiplied their earnings, improved their love life and finally decided to pursue their passions.
This page was popular, and for some reason Jenny felt really cozy within its digital embrace. There were many women just like her, struggling to get their life together. They all started from nothing, and found the way out. There was hope for her. Who knows? Maybe, with this boost of spiritual energy she could finally break free from the tight shackles of poverty? It’s very unlikely of course, but what if it’s all real? At the end, this woman has achieved everything anyone could dream of - she definitely knows the path to success. And the others, too - she saw their pages, they were real people, nothing about them seemed unauthentic. In fact, they were completely ordinary - and for them, this practice worked. One cannot fake that, can he?
Thinking about all the new possibilities, Jenny nodded off.
When it was still very early in the morning, her alarm went beeping. It was still dark outside - winter in the northern latitudes was gloomy and cold, with daylight piercing through the murk for mere 6-7 hours a day. Jenny felt exhausted: vague images of stunning lives of others left a bitter aftertaste. She thought about all the dull, stressful work that was ahead of her this week and let out a sigh. She stayed in bed a bit longer, until it was only 15 minutes before her train to work was departing. Realisation that she might be late and get an earful from her boss gave Jenny an impulse of energy. She stood up, brushed her teeth and made a quick sandwich with butter and cheese. While chewing, she put on black pants and a sweater, tied her hair in a bun and grabbed a capacious, past-its-best brown bag.
To go to work, Jenny first had to take a train to the city. Then, another hour by metro and bus. It was pretty normal to spend several hours on commute where she was from. What else can one do, when there is no work in a small town next to a big megapolis?
Jenny was working as a waitress at one of the higher end restaurants in the centre of the city. The salary was not that high end, though. Only good parts were the tips and the opportunity to spend all day among well-dressed, refined customers. Jenny enjoyed talking to them, she liked to think she understood their language like no other waiter on her team. Sometimes she felt like she belonged to them, like she was one of them, even though she did not fit the textbook definition.
Today, however, was not her lucky day. She was not in a good mood, and, weirdly mirroring it, the tips were very dry. Her mind was busy contemplating whether she should take a chance and get spiritual guidance from this mentor she saw on social media. There was not that much magic in her life, she had to admit. Looking at the chewing faces of the customers, which today seemed especially distant, Jenny felt the world suddenly getting heavier, like someone was pressing on it with a big, weighty palm.
On the way home, Jenny slipped into the luxurious majesty of the guru’s page once again. So much was going on there! Today, the lady shared some pictures of a stunning French restaurant with shockingly small portions. In the picture, you could see her hand adorned with shiny diamond bracelet and rings. Then came her thoughts of the day: she wrote that real wisdom is not about the brain, but about the heart. It was written in a pretty specialised spiritual language, but from what Jenny understood, while heart has all the answers and keys to one’s success, brain can only bring unnecessary stress and scare the magic away. “Interesting”, thought Jenny.
“My teachings are not about the brain”, - the guru continued, - “So if you really want to let the Universe help you achieve your goals, you need to switch your mind off and open your heart to my blessing”. This was followed by some screenshots from her followers, which were thankIng her for changing their lives and pondering on how she was such a strong, mighty medium.
Days were gong by, and it was almost weekend when Jenny was summoned by her manager. “You seem really distracted lately. Any moment I see you not busy with the clients, you are on your phone. Did something happen?” - asked a concerned-looking, slightly round man in a grey suit. For some reason, Jenny felt really irritated by his question. She never liked negative feedback, ever since she was at school. That’s what it reminded her, schooling. By someone who was only managing the waiters, having no idea how tiring their work can get.
“Nothing happened. I’m doing my best to serve every customer as quickly as possible”.
“But customers are also noticing that your performance has declined. Your tips this week are lower than usual, and someone has complained that he did not feel genuinely welcome when you served him.” - continued the manager. For some reason, Jenny’s glance clang to his nameplate, which read “Bill” in italic. Gosh, how fed up she was with doing what other people told her to do, especially such uninspiring, down to earth people like Bill. There was nothing magical about him, she thought. No wonder he cared so much about such minor things as her checking her phone a couple times a day. She was working, she was completing her tasks, she was certainly good at it. Tips can fluctuate, it’s completely normal. He probably made up the story about the unhappy customer just to make her feel guilty and ask for forgiveness. But he was not going to get it.
“Look, Jenny, my point is simple. If you want to keep your job - and make no mistake, we have a lot of candidates who would be excited to take your place - so, if you want to work here, you have to stay focused on your work entirely. That means, no more browsing social media during work hours. Understood?” - Bill looked at her with a little frown. Then, probably realizing that he might have sounded too harsh, he added: “Emergencies can happen, and you can of course take a moment to reply to important messages when no customers are around, but I cannot allow you to be glued to your screen while at work”.
“Alright, - answered Jenny, - No problem”.
Although on the inside she was boiling, she knew better than to get in a confrontation. “Whatever, - she thought, - I will do as he says, when he is around. What he does not know, does not hurt him. I need to be more clever with it”.
Annoyed, Jenny counted her tips and went home. On the metro, with a familiar move she opened the page of the guru. It was like a digital amusement park. Again, many women were sharing their experiences and sounded absolutely ecstatic. Today, the guru was talking about her way up from poverty to the glittering world of fame and wealth.
Apparently, she used to be an ordinary human being, just like Jenny. She was working as a hairdresser. The work was hard, and she put in extra hours to one day be able to rent a tiny room and start her own hair salon. Until she was thirty, she was putting her work above anything else and her love life was non-existent. It was until one day she broke her leg and had to take a long break from work that she started reconsidering her life. She started exploring her spirituality, visualizing her goals and looking at life more lIke at game. The rest kind of grew from there: in three years, she had a successful business, a loving husband and any material things she could dream of. She asked, and the universe listened.
“I have only a couple of spots left available in my private chat», - she said - “So today is your last chance to enter. If you found my page, if something led you here - it’s not a coincidence. The universe has chosen you. Now, if you miss your chance, the door will close forever. Besides, it costs as little as a cup of coffee!”
“That’s true, - thought Jenny relieved, - or more like 3 cups of coffee at the café where I work, but still…it’s not that critical. I can certainly afford it”.
She felt a rush of energy running through her body like an electric charge. She knew what she had to do. In a couple of quick clicks, she paid for access to the private chat. “My life is never going to be the same”, she whispered.
Several months later Jenny was at work when someone called her by her name. Turned out it was a classmate of her from the makeup school, Rachel. Oh boy, she looked stunning! Her hair was neatly curled, her clothes, bag and jewelry looked expensive. Rachel insisted she would pick Jenny up from work at the end of the day so that they have an opportunity to chat.
When Jenny was finally free, Rachel was already there, eating a green apple next to her shiny car. “Jump in!” - she said cheerfully, opening the door for Jenny. “How are you, how is life?” - she asked when Jenny got in. She seemed to be full of energy, which was a bit irritating for Jenny, but she was so curious to know how Rachel got so successful that she was trying her best to act friendly. “It’s good, thank you. Working at the restaurant, saving up some money for vacation. I want to travel to Bali. Just a stable life, you know? But tell me about yourself? Seems like you’re blooming!”
“Aww that’s so sweet of you, - replied Rachel, - And I’m glad to hear you’re doing well. Regarding my life…it’s all…” - she nodded to her designer bag in the back seat, - “…pretty new.” She made a small pause, as if figuring out where to begin, then continued, - “Back when we were studying, I started doing wedding makeup, remember? Well, with time I started trying to also give my clients a boost of self confidence. At the end, this day just has be memorable, so if I can somehow help them feel more beautiful and special…that would be worth a lot. And it worked! More and more customers were discovering me by word of mouth. I rented a space, and when I finally met my co-founder slash investor, I already had a strong presence on social media. Bit by bit, it grew into our own small beauty studio in the city. The business is super stressful and things always go wrong”, - she laughed, - “But I’m pretty happy about where it’s going”.
They talked some more, remembering the old times and acquaintances. And at some point Jenny decided to ask Rachel about her stance on spirituality. Was she manifesting her success? Did she work with a spiritual mentor?
“Not really, - said Rachel, - I’m a bit sceptical about those things. Especially when there are so many charlatans out there trying to give people a magic pill…”
With an uneasy feeling, as if anticipating something bad, Jenny asked if Rachel had heard about the guru that she had bought advice from.
“Yes, yes, I know her! She has a beauty studio, and some of the people I work with have dealt with her…She is the perfect example of what I just said earlier: a total fraud!”
“What do you mean?” - asked Jenny.
“I mean, she is selling some blessings, like you can get rich by simply affirming that you are rich and stuff like that. And she is claiming that she is self-made…That’s not actually true. She basically married a rich guy some years ago, and he is giving her all these expensive gifts. Before, she was practically nobody. I bet he also invested in her social media promotions - you know, getting her page so popular? It’s all a facade. She was selling hairdresser courses before, but I guess they realized that selling blessings us way more lucrative. Oh, and all the negative comments get immediately deleted, so people believe it’s all real. Funny, huh, what people can do for the money? And all those poor souls who believe in that nonsense…I just cannot imagine how hopeless you need to be to really buy into that spiritual crap that she’s selling...”
Jenny did not know what to say. It could not have been that simple, could it?
This car, Rachel, her expensive bag - everything suddenly became unreal, unimportant. She did not remember how she got home, she was in a dreamlike, numb state. She took a long shower, cooked food, watched some TV. Tomorrow she was going for a brunch at her favorite café. Weather forecast was promising a sunny day with just a tiny bit of rain. Jenny went to bed and watched a new episode of her favorite reality show. It was about filthy rich wives of Beverly Hills, who were organizing endless parties and constantly having arguments with each other. Jenny would be wiser if she was in their position, she thought. She would not argue about such minor things.
Before falling asleep, Jenny opened her social media app. A new video from the guru greeted her from the screen. She looked as high maintenance as always: stunning makeup, shiny hair, expensive jewelry. She was talking about something. Jenny made the sound louder.
“…so they can never even imagine what it’s like to know the sacred truth. This world is full of brutal people, those who cannot see beyond the veil of their day to day life. They are guided by their brain, not by their heart, so the Universe is never going to listen to them”, - she seemed to be full of emotions, so she took a deep breath, - “I emphasize it always, that following the brain can only lead you to unhappiness. If you want your wildest dreams to come true, you have to follow the heart. I’m thrilled to announce that in my new course I’ll show you exactly how it’s done.”
And naturally, a dozen of screenshots with ecstatic expressions from the die-hard fans have followed. Jenny spent especially long reading this one from a woman whose husband was about to file for a divorce, but for some reason has changed his mind while this lady was listening to the course. “Wonders do happen sometimes”, - thought Jenny, excited.

LONGEST PASSAGE
The passage which was later named "The Longest Passage" was first read in a collection of stories by Professor Aravind Joshi. The full text can be found here. There are three versions in a file format of Professor Joshi's choosing, and the link here will direct you to the first.
These stories were collected and assembled under somewhat unusual circumstances. At the time they were read, Professor Joshi did not know of their existence. The passages were presented to him by an anonymous individual. There was a cover letter:
"I was browsing your literature. Your story 'The Northern Caves' was interesting. The first page intrigued me with its description of a man "who was lost in the midst of his life." The next page intrigued me more. The next. My curiosity was piqued. I began to read, but then I didn't want to stop. I was hooked. I read for a long time after that, and when I was finally able to stop reading I noticed that I was feeling quite emotional and excited, just as you probably imagine would happen if you read one of your stories again long after you had originally written it. I think the reason I was feeling this way is that the story is really beautiful and has a wonderful theme. I am not an expert in literature. I have no idea of what you have written before. So forgive me. I am just trying to say that "The Longest Passage" is amazing. I hope you are happy. I have sent this to you so that you can know that I am excited. It is a good story. Thank you for putting it together."
It was Professor Joshi's habit to reply to all letters, even if they were anonymous. The cover letter was returned, and after a while, Professor Joshi received a second letter, from the same source. The second letter had a cover sheet. This time the letter said:
"Just a little note. You wrote a story 'The Longest Passage' and sent it to me. That is a really good story and I like it a lot. It's also a good story! It was really a good story that it is a good story! But more than that it is a good story that it is a good story and it's a good story it's a good story and that is a good story! and so on, as I think it is a good story too! Anyway, it's a good story! But more than that, it's a good story and it's good and it's good and it's a good story and a good story and a good story and a good story and it's a good story and it's a good a good story! But more than that, it's a good story and that is a good story and a good story and that it is a good story and it is a good story it is a good story and it is a good story and it's a good story and it's good and it's good and it is a good story and it's a good story. But more than that, that's a good story!"
Professor Joshi put down the letter, and looked at his friend with astonishment.
He had written a number of stories of his own. But he was also the author of a large number of stories that were part of a tradition or sub-genre of his own – of the very same kind as these. Most of these stories began in an imagined past of some kind, in which various people were going through certain situations, with all of them having the feeling of 'I've been here before.' In fact, Joshi's first draft of The Longest Passage was titled 'The Very Longest Story.' He thought it was very short, so he went on and wrote a number of stories which had exactly the same structure. (One of them, the so-called "Tunnel Story," was quite long, but it was not part of the tradition.)
In the later works, Joshi developed a technique of "exaggerating the obvious." What was obvious in the "I've been here before" setting was not at all obvious in the setting of a particular story. The exaggerated, the "very long story," began with an extended description of some ordinary situation. It was, at the outset, not clear what it was even about -- this was just some ordinary guy, some ordinary guy (who looked a little like himself!) who was going through an ordinary day, with all the details of this day being as mundane as possible, down to the level of the individual cells of cells on a screen which had nothing to do with anything. (One could imagine the story being part of an ordinary newspaper -- say, the Baltimore Sun.) And yet -- that ordinary-seeming situation was, within the bounds of a single "chapter," the beginning of an infinite sequence of things: of ordinary days, and weeks, and months, and years, or decades, or the imagined lifespan of a planet, all strung together by the same kind of mundane, everyday-sounding narration one might read in an ordinary newspaper. The story as a whole seemed to end with a description of a guy looking at some flowers for a while and then putting them back in the vase and going about his business, and then moving to the next page of the newspaper, etc. It wasn't true, and yet it was true in the way true things are true.
It was this passage, and others like it, which caused Professor Joshi's first doubts about the project. He did not believe that he was capable of creating something like this, at least not in the time that he would have left. After all, his own stories were nothing like this. He could never have dreamed that he could create something which, while it was as strange to him as it was to the reader, was, if anything, more ordinary than the newspaper. This kind of thing seemed to have to be a fantasy of some kind, perhaps of an adolescent or young adult. Surely it could not be done, or the world would be so full of such stories that one could never forget them. But Professor Joshi was not an ordinary man.
It was at this moment that he received another letter. Its cover sheet read:
"Thank you very much for your reply to my letter. Your letter was interesting and made me wonder and I am wondering now. I am wondering if your stories are real. Do you believe that your stories are real? Do you believe that your stories can be real? Or are your stories not real? Or are your stories real, but only if they are unreal? This is a very difficult question. I'm wondering if you would be willing to come and visit my office to talk about all of this. I will pay for your expenses. My phone number is …."
As Joshi finished reading the sentence, he saw that the letters on the cover had become obscured by smears of blood. He knew that the room around him was becoming brighter, and as he looked up, he saw through a hole in the ceiling the face of an owl, or a large bird, glowing like some kind of gem. And he was suddenly filled with an incredible feeling of joy, or rather, with a feeling which was, by its very nature, joy, though it was joy about something very different from anything joy had ever meant to him before.
He was still reading, but now his voice was slightly quivering. There was a feeling as though some kind of weight were pressing down upon his chest, and there was a smell as though a fire had been lit somewhere nearby, though it was too far off to smell. He was aware of a vague feeling of being on the verge of sleep. And yet he could not put the book down. The light was streaming in through the window. He could see some dust motes dancing. There was an extraordinary feeling of stillness and peace, so that it almost felt as though time were coming to a stop, so that he would be able to see the future stretching out all around him, to the ends of time. At this moment he was fully awake. The feeling of weight would recede somewhat if only he would put the book down. And yet he was afraid that if he put the book down it would vanish, like a dream one would have just woken up from.
Suddenly he closed the book and looked up again. He could see now that the light was brighter. There was no fire here. The light was different. As though he had opened
