“Had to get you riled up somehow, didn’t I? Besides, that was totally worth it.”

“I am pretty good, huh?”

You slapped his chest playfully.

“I’m never gonna hear the end of this, am I?”

“Angel, no one is going to hear the end of this.”

having a crush, is something that enables a lot of passion and excitement within beomgyu. it makes him feel alive. his heart beats strongly, his adrenaline shoots up, he gets very enthusiastic and passionate. there is this almost childlike exhilaration he will feel. he's definitely the type to get all thrilled over a single text message from his crush.

he'll be incredibly curious about his crush. once he develops interest in a person, he wants to know everything about them. he wants to know what his crush likes, what they dislike, what they enjoy doing, what they don't enjoy doing. beomgyu won't do this in a particurlary creepy manner, but his crush will just be so interesting to him. he'll wonder a lot like.. beomgyu will do a lot of thinking and pondering over how to proceed, on his own. he isn't really the type to let everyone know he has a crush on someone, and is a person who prefers keeping this matter more private.. however, he'll be pretty direct and straightforward in his pursuit.

he showcases his interest in someone in a confident manner, and won't be afraid to make his liking obvious to his crush. quite the opposite, he really wants to act on his feelings. definitely the type to just come up to a person he finds interesting and flirt with them directly. compliment them bluntly, like telling them they're probably the most beautiful person he's ever come across, he couldn't resist talking to them. he can be very straightfoward and smooth, great at flattering. to the extent where it could surprise some people, since he usually doesn't seem like an extremely blunt guy. but in romance, he's all in.

- i can sense that there seems to be a bit of an inner conflict he can deal with, because of this obvious clash between him as a person, and him as a lover. beomgyu does have high standards, not only towards his partners but also himself. it's easy for him to feel regret over some impulsive things he said or did in the heat of the moment, look back on his conversation with his crush and think "i shouldn't have said that" or "did i overwhelm them?" "did i ruin my image?" "do they think i'm too much?" he puts a lot of importance into his crushes opinion of him, and can be afraid to make himself a fool by being too excited or direct sometimes. he wants to appear like the perfect man to his crush, someone they could never say no to.. so, he'll put a lot of effort into making the best impression on them, however deep inside he can struggle with a lot of doubts and worries.

beomgyu doesn't like seeming like a very sensitive or overly emotional person in general, since that's a part of him he hesitates to showcase openly. he doesn't like making himself very vulnerable. so, especially towards a person he's interested in, and wants to appeal to, it's easy for him to hide behind a more confident and strong facade. he feels like his "softer" side is one that is much more complex, and difficult to like.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to talk abut this scene.

Essentially, I put all my thoughts into this fic.

Like………I've rewatched this scene so many times, and the part that keeps stabbing me in the heart is here:

To me, this just feels like Win's giving so much of himself to Team, and Team probably doesn't have a clue how significant all of this is. Win's breaking the rules, but only for Team. He's older and more experienced, but he's willing to give up control.

Arguably, he wants to.

He's the one everyone else depends on, the one who'll step in to take responsibility for running the resort business because his older brother has no interest.

It's no wonder he'd want someone else to lead for once, but it's incredible that that someone is a first-year he's only known for a few weeks at this point. He's a third-year, and in all that time he's never met someone who interested him so thoroughly he's starting to bend his life around him.

It's not just that they're vers that I love, it's why they are. (Why I think they are.)

Some vers couples just enjoy the physical sensations of being both top and bottom, and it doesn't get any more complicated than that. But with Win, I think part of why he's into it is psychological, too. I think he wants someone he can rely on, and it's beautiful that he chooses Team: someone younger who suffers from sleep problems and possibly anxiety and PTSD.

And it's not like Win's totally clueless about that, either.

He's seen hints of it already because he's been paying very close attention.

I just love how their relationship is set up in these first two episodes. In the first episode they had a hookup where Win made sure that Team knew what he was doing, where he was, and who he was with. In the second episode they established more concretely that this is something they both want to continue, at least for now, and that Team can stop whenever he wants.

And and and! I wanted to make a whole other post for this but I'll just do it now:

The sad string music, right? It plays over them making out initially, but y'know where it stops?

It stops right after Team asks Win if he's done this before: broken the rules and hooked up with people in the locker room after practice. Because Team already knows Win went into the club's files to find out Team's room number to check on him earlier.

Win just puts his forehead on Team's, and it's such a sweet and affectionate gesture when they really, really don't know each other that well yet, but Win's starving for someone to love whether he accepts it about himself or not.

And then my favorite music transfer yet!

It starts up again when Win kisses Team.

And then back to forehead stuff. :')

Usually I tend to see a piece of music in a scene as representing one character's emotional state, but I think here it feels more like the music represents their relationship's direction, if that makes sense?

Like, the sad violins are what could have been: if Team hadn't stopped Win and clarified what they're doing, where they stand with each other. If they'd just hooked up again the way they did that first night, without continuing the conversation of what they are to each other, they could have ended up in a much darker, less healthy place.

We get two music changes after we reach what I'm calling Team's song until I find out the official title (it's Prem singing from Team's POV, for anyone who hasn't heard yet). The first change is when Team asks Win directly if he does this a lot, and the second…

Is after Team asks what'll happen if he wants to end whatever they're doing. And I love that Win's staring into his eyes, because I think it shows that he's actually listening, no matter how out-of-it he seems.

It's only when Win effectively tells him there won't be larger consequences, they'll just stop, that they get the big escalation of the jubilant part of Team's song.

And I think this just cements Win's whole belief that he's never going to have someone who stays, something that lasts. But the music isn't sad, it's triumphant. Because, I think, they're doing what they should have: Team clarified what they were doing, and Win reassured him that he doesn't have anything to fear from Win himself if he wants to end it.

Almost like Team can be afraid of anyone else, but not him. /excessivecrying

what's it like in a haunted house with them- Genshin Impact pt. 1

Characters: Hu Tao, Shenhe, Beidou, Ningguang

a/n: this is part of my Halloween event!! you can find it here! I will do my best to update it as i write characters!

Hu Tao

Probably not the best to go to a haunted house with

Hu Tao enjoys going to them! It's the most popular date option during October for the both of you.

Loves dressing up and going to them! She prefers matching costumes too! You've both ghost, zombies, and vampires before!

Scares the scarers back

Has been banned for some haunted houses for being too scary

Her favorite part of the haunted houses is going ahead of you and hiding, waiting for you to approach

And when you get close, she jumps out to give you a scare

"BOO!! Hahaha! You should see the look on your face! You're as pale as a ghost! Hmm? Aw, come on, don't give me that face, you know i was just joking right? Come here for moment."

Gives you as many hugs and kisses as she can because she feels bad about spooking you, only a little bit though!

Shenhe

Doesn't really understand them

She still goes to them, not because she wants to protect or anything, just wants to experience it

Shenhe most definitely doesn't get scared, mostly just confused by some of the decorations or costumes of the scarers

Tries to eat a fake spider

If you get scared and grab onto her, she turns beet red

Doesn't dress up but she might if you beg her too

She'd most likely just wear a witch hat or the devil horn headband

Keeps a hold on you so you don't get lost or wonder off

Somehow, she wonders off herself and now there's people looking for you to come collect your girlfriend

"..." "So how did you- " " I would rather not speak about.."

Overall, Shenhe will protect you and comfort you if you get too scared! Just be a bit careful about showing too much affection, she might over heat!

Beidou

Objectively one of the funniest ones to go to a haunted house with

She'd boast about how you can grab on to her if get scared and the first jumpscare to happen, she'd jump in surprise (totally not scared at all)

Tries to laugh it off and say it was just a fluke

A lot more careful to pay more attention to her surroundings afterwards

I think Beidou would wear a costume to these but like a really funny one. Like a banana costume or something similar

holds on to your waist and holds you close to her so you don't get lost through the haunted house

If she feels you flinch at anything, she tightens her grip just a bit and pulls you into her side a bit

cracks jokes if things are too dense

if it gets too boring, Beidou will start a eye spy game to see how many random decorations you both can find

steals a spider decorations

"So, we might need to run back to ship." "what? why?" " heh, i may have stolen a decoration."

Cue to you both running

atleast you both have a new decoration for the crux

Lifts you up so you can place it up above the captain cabinet door.

Also gives you a very passionate kiss to make up for making you run

Ningguang

absolute queen

takes getting frightened like a champ, and laughs it off with pride and joy

Doesn't dress in a costume but does wear a nice outfit to go with the theme of the evening

Was mostly invite to it as a guest for a fundraiser or something similar

Thoroughly enjoys watching you interact with everything, and smiles gently when you get spooked by something

Ningguang keeps a hand on the small of your back so she can wrap her arm around should the need arise

Might get annoyed if people walking by gawk at the both of you

Might have to schedule a private visit for just the both of you

Enjoys the decorations and the ambience of it all

Afterwards, she definitely takes you out to eat foods that match the season.

"My gem, are you enjoying yourself? I should've tried to schedule a private event for us, i wasn't expecting so many people. "

Afterwards, Ningguang takes you back to the jade chamber for a bit of pampering and quality time together

Work-in-Progress Wednesday

Friends new and old, I welcome you to another edition of "Winter writes things and pokes her friends to do the same." Today we have a funny. Nothing else needs to be said. “Did you ever even go home, Ralof?” Dahlia asks her brother-in-arms as she sits down next to him.

He stops mid-bite and turns up to her, a grin on his face, despite the hangover he is sure to feel.

“Ralof!” She shouts as soon as his bruise is visible to her. “What happened? Who did this to you?”

The mark has become more pronounced since yesterday. What was barely a discolored stain is now a deep, angry purple. Dahlia doesn’t waste any time as she reaches out gently with her healing magic to fade the mark until not a trace of it is left.

Ralof shifts uncomfortably in his seat as he chances a glance back to Galmar to see if he is paying attention to their conversation. However, nothing else needs to be said. She understands that look well enough. The Lady of Windhelm gets up from her seat and marches over to where Ulfric, Jorleif, and Galmar are standing.

“What possible reason could you have had for punching Ralof?” She demands, her foot tapping impatiently on the stone floor.

“He told you then, did he?” The General frowns as he looks over his shoulder to the man in question.

“No, he didn’t have to. You just did, and I am still waiting for an answer.”

Jorleif and Ulfric look back and forth awkwardly between each other as they contemplate if they should make a strategic exit from the conversation, or if doing so would make matters worse.

“I wasn’t intentional. I didn’t exactly do it on purpose—”

“But you did do it, did you not? Come on, Galmar, confess. Where is our brave general?" She places her hands on her hips. "Tell me how on Nirn would you have gotten into a situation where you would have ‘accidentally’ hit Ralof in the face.”

Galmar sighs. He knows that prolonging the explanation will only make things worse. "He tried to take my helm."

Dahlia blinks. “Excuse me?” Her nostrils flare as she tries to be patient. “You mean to tell me that you assaulted Ralof all over your stupid bear helm?”

“In my defense, as I told you, I did not mean to punch the lad! He wouldn’t let go, and my hand slipped when he ripped it from me.”

“I have heard enough. You two are impossible.”

“So, you agree that it was wrong for Ralof to take it from me?”

“Yes and no. That thing is perfectly fine for on the battlefield, but has no place as formal attire at a wedding. How you could have thought—” She shakes her head and turns back to Ralof. “And you cannot just go taking things from people! You wouldn’t be in this mess now if you had asked or had gone to get me.”

Both of them look down at the ground thoroughly admonished. How she manages to make them both feel guilty, neither of them know.

As she opens her mouth to say more, Ulfric places a hand over his wife’s shoulder and squeezes. “If we are done yelling at the children, Jorleif has something important which needs to be addressed.”

Dahlia knows he means it as a jab at Galmar and Ralof, but she narrows her eyes playfully at him anyway. “Of course, my Jarl. Your lady is ready to listen.”

Not to bring back Steven Universe discourse in 2023, but I don't know how you can expect people to grasp morally grey characters when they can't grasp Rose Quartz from the family friendly show about space rocks.

Though as someone who thoroughly enjoyed Steven Universe I do think she came across as a surprisingly complex character, such a character in such a show could also be seen as "baby's first morally grey character".

Although I'm more than willing to believe that there are people out there who stopped at her being a villain, the situation I see the most often is:

>some user mentions something bad Rose Quartz did >another user replies something along the lines of: "i'm tired of these idiots with no critical thinking who keep thinking Rose is a villain 🙄 if you actually watched the show you'd know we got her character arc in reverse."

They accuse people who express a disliking for Rose's morality of seeing things in black and white. Because they caught on to the fairly surface-level meta that her character arc was portrayed to the viewers in reverse, they view themselves as beacons of critical thinking for reaching the conclusion that ah-ha! Rose Quartz wasn't actually bad when you look at the whole picture!

But if seeing Rose as a horrible person throughout is the "black", clamouring her full-blown innocence is the "white". I'm sure there have already been enough people to write complete analyses of her character both before and after the war, so I'm not trying to add to that here; still, my point is, nothing about Rose's writing or about the show hints at her complete lack of villainy. I do not believe the writers wanted their viewers to reach the conclusion that none of the bad things she did mattered in the end, or that she was a perfect individual by the time she disappeared to leave place for Steven. Neither do I believe they wanted us to think nothing she did ever had positive repercussions.

I don't think I need to explain how much her past actions taint Steven's existence. By the events of Future, he's tired of hearing about the never-ending list of bad things she did and no longer wants to see her face in his home. Do you claim to know better than her son that she was actually great?

And yet, she saved the Earth. She validated Garnet's love from the get-go. Her decisions eventually led to Pearl's freedom. She mourned for Lion and granted him immortality. All of these things had huge downsides that I don't need to explain either. (Lion's, less so - though I think it's interesting to look into the fact that she isn't known to have ever used this power otherwise. My analysis based on what we know of Rose is that she would value the Earth's cycle of life too much to interfere. She saved Lion - whether by accident or on purpose - and knew that it was wrong in the grand scheme of things. But it gave us Lion.)

Within the show, she was a messy character who led to those around her having messy, contradictory feelings. She hurt Pink Pearl when she was at her most immature, but during and "after" her growth she also hurt her next Pearl in different ways. Similarly, different viewers will latch on to different aspects of her characterisation, and perhaps be attached to her growth, or on the contrary loathe the hurt she caused that they maybe relate to.

Not only do her past actions as Pink Diamond continue to have a large array of consequences, which to me prevents her from being seen as a good guy throughout, but many of her actions as Rose Quartz were also misleaded, selfish, hurtful. She had great intentions and yet never learned to communicate properly. She had done great things and yet her final act was one that was fully selfish.

Just because someone comments on something that was exclusively good or exclusively bad that she did doesn't mean they didn't pay attention to the show. Rose did both. That was a pretty significant thing that happened

Skinamarink (Re-Appraisal)

Okay, so this is the first time i’ve ever done this for a movie, but i couldn’t get this one out of my head. As y’all may remember, i spent my initial review mainly talking about the issues i had with it and then sending it off with a mediocre score and a lukewarm recommendation if you’re into arthouse shit.

But, for whatever reason, i couldn’t stop thinking about it.

I found myself liking the movie more and more the more distance I had from actually watching it, and the more i was just researching the (very sparse) lore and looking at tumblr posts and shit. Which seemed super weird to me, and idk that i should recommend a movie based on how it makes you feel AFTER you’re done watching it

So i watched it again last night

This time, i really thoroughly enjoyed myself. I knew what I was in for, I could follow the plot, I was prepared for the weird way it was shot so it wasn’t distracting, and the nature of the scares meant that they actually stayed pretty effective the second time around as well.

It was MUCH more emotionally effective. It made me anxious, it made me incredibly fucking depressed, it made me feel a little bit sick to tell you the truth. It actually succeeded in just about everything it set out to do.

I also didn’t realize the first time around how...not irrelevant the visuals are, but secondary. A lot of the movie is told through sound alone, and the sound quality really is incredible and very fucking creepy. I caught myself at times wondering if you could just listen to this entire movie and still get what was going on. You couldn’t, and the visuals are important and very striking sometimes, but almost. Either way, it’s very interesting.

I would highly recommend this movie, based on my second viewing of it, but therein lies the catch

Okay, my praise out of the way, here’s where i’m gonna start dumping all over it

Skinamarink is kinda like hypnosis. It only works if you let it. You can’t watch it like a normal movie. You have to really immerse yourself in it, i mean, in a sense you have to almost actively TRY to enjoy it, or at least try to engage with and understand it. There’s a whole section of people i know who just read that and went “Oh, well that alone makes it a shit movie.”

Which is a valid take, and you’ll fucking hate Skinamarink.

But if you let yourself get totally immersed, watch it alone in the dark with like some very nice quality headphones and pay very close to attention to everything you see and hear (because many of the infamous static shots of random ceiling corners and shit are actually giving you some kind of information), you’ll have a really great....great’s probably the wrong word, a really tense and uncomfortable and horrifying experience.

Also, this is almost the opposite of one of those blockbuster Marvel movies where they don’t even want the actors to know what’s going on lest something be spoiled, i would honestly highly recommend going into Skinamarink already knowing the basic beats of the plot. Not y’know a scene-by-scene breakdown, but just knowing what pretty much happens greatly improved my enjoyment of it the second time.

What happens being, essentially, that a kid playing with some imaginary friend seems to fall down the stairs and hit his head. They get home from the hospital later that night and the dad goes to bed. The sister gets up later to find the dad has disappeared into thin air, along with all their house’s doors and windows. From there, it’s largely just the story of these two kids trying to make sense of and survive their situation while they’re fucked with in gradually and then very fucking dramatically escalating ways by what appears to be an omnipotent entity. Think I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream starring two kids just barely too old to be called toddlers, and no motivation or backstory is given for AM and you’ll start to understand what it’s going for.

In terms of technique, it’s shot in a deliberately frustrating and disorienting way that is often supposed to be mimicking a child’s perspective. You don’t get a good look at anyone’s face, ever. The two main characters are exclusively shot from the waist down, usually the knees down. Once in a blue moon you get the back of someone’s head.

Characters are usually completely off-screen, and so is the action. I don’t just mean the gore and scary shit. I mean almost literally everything that happens happens off-screen while the camera is pointed somewhere else. If you’re lucky, you’ll see an object get dragged on or off-screen, but that’s about it.

The dialogue that is there, and there’s not a lot, is almost entirely whispered and almost unintelligible, to the point that about half the lines are subtitled by the movie itself. It’s...not easy to follow.

Again, if that description turns you off, you’re gonna wanna give it a miss

Finally, i’d watch the director’s short film “Heck” first, it’s on youtube for free and it’s only half an hour. It’s not the same story, but it’s a very similar one with a very similar style, and serves as a very nice litmus test for your ability to put up with Skinamarink’s.....idiosyncracies.

So yes, i would recommend the movie. With a lot of fucking qualifiers. If it’s not worth the trouble to you, it’s not worth the trouble to you, and that’s fine. I don’t think i’d call it y’know the BEST horror movie of the year based on just how limited the appeal is. But i do believe for a select group of weirdos and art hoes (myself included) it’s one of the most bleak, disturbing, and anxiety-provoking horror films in a while and highly enjoyable.

TL;DR My first review remains true in that if you love arthouse pretentious shit you should give it a go and if you hate arthouse pretentious shit you should give it a miss and if you’re unsure you should read the long version and use your own discretion, but i actually really liked it. Eventually. I had to warm up to it

Akaashi is a good mix of reserved and sassy. With his humor, he will easily play into your fondness of people who like to sass their friends and lovingly insult them. He’s obviously not one of those loud, goofy, class clown types, but he still has a solid sense of humor and can appreciate it when it comes from other people - as long as it suits his tastes, of course. Many of his reactions are subtle, but you could definitely get a little smile or a chuckle out of him by teasing him or jokingly getting on his case. His sarcasm and deadpan delivery isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but it seems like you’re someone who could really enjoy it if it came from the right person.

Blunt and straightforward, Akaashi can and will call you out if you fall into anxious thinking or perfectionistic behaviors. Even if he himself struggles with moments of overthinking, it’s easier for him to help out other people when he notices them struggling (as opposed to getting himself out of his own funk). It’s good to have standards and a goal, in his opinion, but it’s all too easy to take it too far! He is often quiet about it, but he is your biggest supporter, and you’re “perfect” in his eyes even if you’re not “perfect” in yours. So, the moment he notices your condition start to falter because you’re anxious, or because you’re pushing yourself too hard, he will immediately bring it to your attention so you two can do something about it.

He’s pretty perceptive, so he’s quick to notice when you’re struggling with some insecurities. Akaashi isn’t exactly the type to frequently reassure you with sweet words - occasionally, he will, during moments where you’re at your lowest, or moments where he’s really feeling soft - so most of the time he will address your insecurities in a blunt manner. He’s not really tactless about this per se, but he will flat-out tell you that you don’t need to worry about X insecurity, not around others and especially not around him, and he’ll explain why if you don’t believe him. Of course, everyone struggles with insecurity sometimes, and he will never blame you for it, and he understands that he won’t be able to magically change your mind either. Regardless of how he tells you, it’s important to him that he tells you that you really don’t need to be so hard on yourself and that you’re allowed to love yourself more.

Akaashi is very pretty and would look so good with eyeliner. He might initially put up a bit of a fuss if you tried to convince him to let you put some makeup on (because he “doesn’t need it” and it would also “get in the way” of his activities for the day… He’d be worried about smudging it or rubbing it off), but he wouldn’t be too stubborn about refusing. Akaashi doesn’t typically give in to whining from his friends (especially, in particular, Bokuto), but he seems the type to give in a little easier with his partner. Compromise is important, after all! And him “compromising” on this issue really isn’t a big deal, and it’s worth it for him to see your face light up when he agrees. He would definitely examine your work on his face thoroughly and compliment it accordingly (because you’ve got good skill and, again, he’s so pretty and makeup would only enhance his features even more).

Movie nights at home are calm, cozy, and sometimes even intimate! For Akaashi, it’s a nice change of pace from all the energy he has to deal with during practice. He doesn’t have much of a genre preference, but he will give you a look if it seems like a weird movie, lol. When having movie dates at home, he typically defers to your preference when you two are scrolling through the lists of films, but he will point one out if it catches his eye. For cinema dates, chances are you’re the one inviting him out when there’s a movie coming out that you want to see; he doesn’t pay too much attention to new releases, but again, if he ever spots something that he wants to see, he’ll let you know! Funnily enough, you won’t always need to be the one to “initiate” movie dates, whether at home or at the cinema. Akaashi knows movies are one of your big interests, so he’ll check in with you from time to time if there are any movies you want to see or re-watch, and he’ll make a date of it. Leave the snacks up to him!

Akaashi definitely gets curious about your music taste. You’re listening to music so often, after all, and you’re always so focused on actually listening to it and enjoying it, so his interest is naturally piqued. Sure, he likes music about as much as the average person does, but half the time he listens to music it’s just background noise for him. Sometimes if you’re listening to music and he’s just reading or browsing on his phone near you, he might ask if he can share your headphones or if you could play the music out loud, so he can see what music you’re enjoying at the moment. Even if a song’s not to his taste, he still wants to get a peek at what you’re listening to!

The ISFJ type tends to feel a deep responsibility to others and invests a lot of energy into maintaining strong connections to the people in their lives. While they are hardworking, practical, supportive, and reliable, they are also somewhat reluctant to big changes, and they may take things too personally and get taken advantage of. Sometimes Akaashi feels out of his depth when dealing with such open expression of emotions, and when people respond to situations with their emotions first and not with their head.

Your different approaches might cause some conflict between you two sometimes, especially when it comes to interpersonal problems between the two of you - the age-old head vs heart struggle. If you’re the type to take things too personally during a disagreement, Akaashi’s tendency to say it like it is might be difficult to deal with. He isn’t intending to hurt you, and he’s mature enough to apologize when he knows he’s upset you with his words, but it’s still something that can happen from time to time. It’s something that you both need to work on, together, and as long as you’re able to come to a compromise or solution it shouldn’t be too strenuous a task!

Potential conflicts aside, Akaashi admires that you’re so willing to be in-tune with your emotions and show them to others. You know how to connect and empathize with others, and those are such good traits to have. That being said, Akaashi will not hesitate to stand up for you if he notices your kindness being taken advantage of by someone. It’s good to be helpful, but he really hates how kind people are often targeted by selfish people.

With one of your love languages being acts of service, you can really make Akaashi’s day! He’s self-sufficient, so he doesn’t really think to ask for favors when it comes to his daily tasks. Still, if you surprise him with something you’ve cooked or baked, he can’t help but feel really warm and fuzzy on the inside. He’d want to return the favor, but he’s not going to say anything about it. You’ll just happen to notice that he’s slipped a couple of your favorite snacks or beverages in your bag when you weren’t looking.

Overall, you bring a softness to Akaashi’s coldness. He’s reserved, restrained, and is very conscious about being so. But when spending time with you, there’s a lot of unconscious smiles that slip onto his face! You’re friendly and passionate, but in a more subtle way than many of his teammates, so it comes off as endearing and calming to him (instead of tiring him out, lol). He’d tease you about it, but he thinks it’s really cute how easily impressed you are by cool tricks. He’d argue that he’s no braggart or show-off, and he’s really /not/, but… he’d still show off from time to time just to see your reaction.

The Dallas Connection (1994)

The Dallas Connection is hilariously inept. In many ways, it’s got everything you want out of a "so bad it's good" action film. The performances are awful, with the title of “least convincing” constantly moving from one actor to the next. The plot is simplistic, bordering on idiotic, making it easy to follow even if you’re spending more time shouting insults at the screen than paying attention to what’s going on. The script contains gems like “I’d like to suck the polish off your toes” to keep you laughing. There aren’t a lot of action scenes but when bullets are exchanged, they usually result in some unconvincing dummies blowing up. Most important of all, it takes itself completely seriously, with several final act twists proving that some of the “mistakes” we saw previously were actually intentional. Only one thing prevents me from wholeheartedly recommending it to everyone. What is it? Read on.

A trio of beautiful assassins - Black Widow (Julie Strain), Cobra (Julie K. Smith) and Scorpion (Wendy Hamilton) - eliminate three of the four scientists involved in the creation of an advanced satellite system. To ensure Antonio Morales (Rodrigo Obregón) doesn’t fall prey to the same fate, special agents Chris Cannon (Bruce Penhall), Mark Austin (Mark Barriere), Samantha Maxx (Samantha Phillips) and Nicholas Lang (Roland Marcus) are sent to protect him.

Though the plot is easily summarized, it’s made to seem needlessly complicated. This is because of some equation that was split up among the scientists and then converted into microchips that need to be brought together so the satellite can be activated by a meteor shower. This will allow whoever uses it to detect any weapon on earth, anywhere - even underground. Huh? What? It makes no sense but doesn’t matter. The point is, we have a bunch of male scientists with something the evil people want. How do you get a man to hand over something useful? By seducing them, or blowing them up. Enter the trio of female assassins, all of whom are played by Playboy playmates. Like I always say, if you can’t be good, be sleazy and this movie takes that mantra to heart. Unnecessary shower scenes, prolonged sex scenes, a trip to a strip club and loads of inappropriate outfits make this the kind of movie that would be watched over and over by teenage boys late at night. It’s not quite as bad as Skyscraper, but it’s close. The most hilarious R-rated moment has to be a sequence set in a fancy restaurant. Mr. Morales begins fantasizing about what his bodyguard would look like in lingerie so of course we see Samantha Philips out of her clothes. They had to find some way to get it done… beyond the sex scene she had earlier.

While this obsession with the female body is hilarious and pleasing to anyone who might enjoy the female form… it might also be the one thing that won’t make The Dallas Connection fun for every crowd - especially if your group contains couples. Reportedly, Bruce Penhall’s wife was pretty upset by his enthusiasm in the hot tub scene. It’s easy to see why.

The ladies were cast primarily for their ability to dazzle audiences with their shirts off but the male characters aren't exactly Shakespearean all-stars either. One-liners that should have you cheering will instead make you groan, important dialogue is thoroughly unconvincing (and contains grammatical errors at least once) and everyone comes off as an idiot. It certainly doesn’t help that the story is full of inconsistent behavior - even if you take the twists at the end into consideration. You can spot a boom mike in the upper left corner of an early scene and the story will have you scratching your head. You’d think with the villains’ team being primarily composed of three “strong” women that Samantha would be the big hero at the end. She’s the only one that can’t be seduced, she’s the one that gets closest to Morales, and as the only woman on the team, she stands out. Except she’s a terrible agent. One punch and she’s down for the count - hardly a badass. You might say I was expecting too much but some of the reveals at the end are proper "Oh!" moments that force you to pause and think. Not much, but for a movie of this level, that counts for a lot.

Ultimately, The Dallas Connection is light on the action but makes up for it with the gratuitous nudity. At first, you'll say “Alright, I see what you did there” but it’s expected out of a film like this one. It’s what the poster is promising, after all. The third, fourth, fifth, sixth, etc. time the film finds a way to get the women out of their clothes are so absurd you'll be howling. Once in a while, it also switches things up with some bad performances, unconvincing dummies, lousy dialogue, and nonsensical writing. From my research, it sounds like this is par for the course for director Christian Drew Sidaris. If that's the case, I’m looking forward to seeing more. (March 26, 2022)
