The Ultimate Newsies (1992) Tag by @a-pair-of-new-shoes
1. How did you first get introduced to the movie? A group in my freshman college dorm got together to show it for one girl’s birthday—I came in somewhere between “Carryin’ the Banner” and “Santa Fe” and MY LIFE CHANGED FOREVER :p
2. What were your first impressions of the movie? I’d been wanting to go work on a dude ranch for 4-1/2 years before seeing the movie, so to come in (like I said, right before Santa Fe) and see a character who wanted to get away and go West, I was hooked right away.  But I saw it in early October, and my friends decided that we were going as the boys for Halloween, and we made a paper as a prop that ended up being popular and continued as a subculture for all four years of school…so we went 0-60 in the space of a few weeks, and I was in way over my head before I realized what I’d gotten into.  I don’t regret it. :p
[[The rest is under a cut, because DON’T GET ME STARTED ON THIS MOVIE]] :p
3. If you could pick one favorite character from the movie, who would it be and why? Jack.  Like I said, the Western thing was the reason I first paid attention to him, but it’s been so much fun exploring who he is and how different backstories and futures could fit into his canon--I’ve been writing him for so long that he feels like a brother or something.  It’s definitely the deepest I’ve ever looked into a character!
4. If you could pick one favorite actor (as a person regardless of how you feel about their character) from the movie, who would it be and why? Christian Bale is the only one I’ve really seen in anything else, but I honestly can’t think of an actor I don’t like in Newsies.  So many child actors come across as precocious or canned, but the boys are so natural in this one—Luke Edwards did SUCH a good job as Les, which unfortunately none of the stage Les-es I’ve seen have been able to match :( I was just watching the movie commentary, and they were talking about how they focused on getting kids who hadn’t really sung or danced before and played up the rawness of it, and I love that approach.  They all did such a good job.
Also, can we just talk about all the subtlety in this movie?!  SO MUCH is said with body language (the boys, always) and facial expressions (Sarah on the roof) and little, “insignificant’ moments (the Jacobs parents when talking about David going back to school), and that’s what makes this movie so much fun to explore, and I think part of why so many people put so much time into fleshing out these side characters—there’s actual meat there, if you pay attention!
5. Favorite Newsies moment from the film? All of them. :p  Some of the scenes I watch over and over, though, are the visit to Brooklyn, the rooftop scene, and the victory scene—so many characters to analyze!
6. Favorite song/dance number and why. “Once and For All.”  It’s so intense!  It was my “TIME TO GET THIS PAPER DONE” song in college, and since this movie led to my friend and I guiding tours of a print shop, I like the printing press part :)
7. Do you ship any characters in the movie? If yes, which ones? Jack/Sarah, but with the stipulation that at the end of the movie, Jack’s not ready for a serious relationship.  He’s more interested in finding a family, and although he and Sarah are definitely attracted to each other, I think it’d take quite a bit of time for them (mostly Jack) to figure things out and become ready to settle down.  (I talked more about Jack/Sarah, and ships in general, here.)
It’s worth noting that I definitely buy Jack and Sarah NOT ending up together, though, too!  Either way, I think he learns a lot from her, in general and in terms of what relationships are and should be.
8. What are your feelings on Sarah’s character? When I first saw the movie, I thought she was weird because she was so underdeveloped, and everything I looked up at the time was against her. But as I watched the movie more, I started noticing what she did in her limited time, and how she became involved in the strike and balanced Jack out, and I love her—she’s usually one of the more challenging characters for me to write, but I have fun with it!  The biggest shift I’ve seen in the fandom from 2010 to now is that people appreciate her now, for herself, and not just in relation to whether or not she should end up with Jack.
9. What are your opinions on the Broadway musical version? First of all, I’ve got to say that I’m so glad the musical introduced a new audience to the story (many of the people I’ve made friends with online came in through the musical).  The cast is obviously so talented, and I enjoyed seeing the tour live and the filmed version (twice) in theaters.
That being said…I’m not a huge fan.
I feel like, despite all the relationships and ideas that the movie explored, it was very tight and focused—like Christian Bale said, it’s about the strike, but also about Jack and David’s relationship (whether or not you ship them, it’s about Jack finding a family through Dave, and about David gaining confidence, and both of them growing as leaders.)  But in the musical, Davey’s almost an afterthought, and despite the heartbreaking scenes with Crutchie, it’s not really focused on him, either.  There’s a ton going on, but it’s missing the intensity of the movie—some of the most intense and emotional scenes (the visit to Brooklyn, the visit to the Refuge, the scab scene) are either missing or watered-down.
And, both Katherine and Davey make fun of Jack’s dream.  Sure, they’re human, and they’re hurt, and maybe that makes them harsh—but when Jack teases Katherine for wanting to be a reporter, she ends up on the front page, following her dream and proving herself.  I’m not saying Jack has to end up in Santa Fe, but—as someone who fell in love with the movie because of its focus on dreaming and not giving up—it irritates me to see them tear down Jack’s dream with no consequence.  That’s not the kind of support I’d want in a relationship and/or friendship.
Finally, like I said above, I liked the rawness of the movie.  I know you need trained singers/dancers for a Broadway show, and I know the subtleness that movie cameras can pick up won’t work when you’re in front of a crowd, but I liked the more combat-oriented dances and how natural the movie actors seemed, compared to precocious Les-es and fancy spins on newspapers.  This isn’t a criticism so much as a personal preference :)
Overall, I think pandolfo-malatesta hit the nail on the head: “Watching the filmed version was like someone coming into my house and replacing family members with younger versions and making generally small but entirely noticeable changes to dearly-held traditions.” As a separate story, the Newsies musical is okay—but compared to the movie, it’s just Not The Same.
All that aside: stage!Medda is AMAZING.  They got rid of the vaguely cougar-ish aspects of movie!Medda, and the way they wove together Medda, Roosevelt, Pulitzer made so much more sense than in the movie, where T.R. just kind of shows up.  (Although, in defense of the real T.R., he loved his wife way too much for me to believe he and Medda were a Thing!)  I like that Pulitzer got a song (if you’re making a musical, the villain HAS to have a song!), and the songs in general are so beautifully arranged—even though I still like the movie lyrics to Carryin’ the Banner and King of New York better! :p
10. Favorite adult in the movie and why. Esther Jacobs.  She fascinates me—I want to see her mothering Jack!  I want to hear about her and Mayer!  I want to make up headcanons about her family in Poland!  (Just kidding, I’ve already done that.) :p
11. Is there anything you consider as canon in the Newsies universe, even though it might not be stated in the movie? At this point, I sometimes have to stop and try to remember what’s actually canon, because I’ve been building up the jackcowboyhero universe for so long, and reading so many other people’s headcanons and stories, that I forget what’s actually stated and what isn’t!
The biggest “general” one, though, that I see the most often in the fandom, is that Dutchy is dyslexic. I’m not sure who started that one—maybe @david-jacobs-would, whose headcanons are generally amazing?
12. What message has Newsies left with you that you love? YOU CAN’T LET ’EM BEAT YA.
Tagging: the people I’ve met through this movie, @twofoxes, @seize-the-davey, and @absinthe-terminus, but whoever else wants to should do it too!

10-10-10 Tag
I was tagged back by @crossroadsred and @sweatersonlambs
(I was gonna do two separate posts, but I was tagged a while ago by both of them and I know if I don’t do them both right now I never will! So you guys are getting a two-fer!)
@crossroadsred ‘s questions:
1. If you could travel to any time period, which one would you choose?
I wanna say something a little less cliche, but probably the 20′s in New York. Or maybe Ancient Greece. You know what, I think I’m liking the idea of Ancient Greece more. Like there’s so many questions! There’s so many gaps, things we don’t know about them. And the things we do know are pretty damn cool. So yeah Ancient Greece. Though I’d love to have my own Midnight in Paris type thing too.
2. If you could travel to any fictional world or universe, which one would it be?
I feel like a lot of the shows I watch are in places that I really wouldn’t want to ever find myself in (*cough cough* Game of Thrones). I think the the world in Avatar The Last Airbender would be pretty cool though! Especially if I had cool bending powers too!
3. What does your dream house/apartment look like? Where would it be (city, countryside, etc.)?
I always go back and forth with this. Part of me wants to live in a cozy apartment in a city. I just love the accessibility and energy of cities. But another part of me really likes the idea of living in the countryside in a small cottage type house, you know? I feel suffocated and get overwhelmed pretty easily. I guess I don’t really know what my dream house or apartment would be. Or even where it would be. But regardless I think it’d be cozy. I don’t that’d I be happy in a huge mansion. Just more to clean. I tend to have a favorite nook or room and never leave that area anyways, so yeah definitely small and cozy for me. Oh and this is a bit random but, I love fireplaces so my dream place would definitely have one. And a garden too.
4. What’s your favorite possession?
Would it be really materialistic of me to say my laptop?
5. If you had to eat or drink something for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Lemonade! I was obsessed with it when I was a kid- like my mom would buy me the powdered packages of pink lemonade so that I could make it at home easily. Like just buying a jug of it wasn’t enough. And yeah, that obsession never really went away, though it did tone down a bit.
6. If you had the opportunity to turn a book into a movie or tv show, which would it be? Would you prefer a movie or a tv show? Who would you cast?
I used to have an answer for this- 13 Reasons Why. It was one of the few books I actually read once I got to middle school age, and I really liked it and connected to it. Obviously it’s a Netflix show now, but I think it’s still a valid answer cause I didn’t really love it. I think it would’ve made a much better movie. I get the whole 13 reasons, so let’s do 13 episodes thing. But it was too drawn out. And they changed a lot. I know why they did, but I didn’t think it was necessary. They just tried to squeeze too much into it.  I don’t really have anyone in mind to cast either. One thing I did like about the show is they cast a not well known actress for the lead. I’d like to do that as well if I were to make it into a movie.
7. What’s something that you’ve always wanted to learn (language, skill, subject, etc.)?
Languages for sure! All of them. I took Italian all through high school and even a bit in college, but I swear I cannot speak a word of it. I think I’d like to be fluent in all the romance languages. I also took a Latin class in a recent semester and I actually loved it.
8. Pick three characters. Which one would you want to be partnered up with for lab? Which one would you want to be stuck in an elevator with for an hour? Which one would you want to be stuck on a deserted island with?
Partner for a lab: Kala from Sense8. For obvious reasons. But also I relate to her so much, so I think it’d actually be a good time.
Stuck in an elevator: Jake Peralta from Brooklyn Nine-Nine. He’s super funny so we’d have no problem passing the time. And also he’s a police officer so he’s good in emergencies too.
Deserted Island: Rey from Star Wars. I just like her, okay? And she’s pretty crafty so she’d probably find a way to get us home.
9. Name something good that’s happened to you this year. It can be anything.
I got a job after having to take a year long medical leave from school. Making money and feeling like I’ve accomplished something has really helped me through the sort of detour I’ve taken with my education. I also got promoted after a month at said job. And yeah, that felt pretty good. I still have a lot of self doubt for sure, but I don’t feel like a complete failure anymore.
10. What’s a weird fact you know?
In ancient times, there were professional mourners. Women were paid to mourn- like hardcore bawling, screaming, clawing at their face type mourning. (I definitely have better ones, but this is what I got for ya right now.)
@sweatersonlambs ‘s questions:
1. Pitch me a movie you wish you could write.
Okay I actually started writing this a million years ago, but here it is: Death tracks down a teenage girl who has the power to heal people, even those inches away from death. But Death doesn’t want to get rid of her- they want to work with her. Death is going rogue. They’re tired of collecting people’s souls and having no control over it. They’re basically the world’s most infamous garbage man. But is the responsibility of choosing who lives and dies too much? And who’s decision is it their’s or the girl’s?
2. If you had a podcast, what would it be about? Basically, what could you talk about for an hour every week?
Make up? I'm not sure. I don’t really listen to podcasts, so I’m not sure what would work or not. I mean are make up podcasts a thing?
3. Talk to me about your pets! If you don’t have one, I want to hear about the pet of your dreams.
I don’t have a pet unfortunately. And shockingly, to myself and everyone who knows me, I think I’d want a dog. I used to be a cat only kind of person, but dogs have really grown on me. When I was a kid, I was terrified of them. I’m not anymore. And in a way getting a dog would be like the final step of overcoming that. Though I suppose that’s a very selfish reason. Really I just want cuddles. And all I want is a pet who wants cuddles too. So dog, cat, or stuffed animal, I think I’ll be happy. I do envision myself with a gentle giant type dog for some reason though. Maybe a Saint Bernard or even a Great Dane.
4. When did you feel the most proud of yourself?
Most recently in getting and keeping my current job. I’m taking a medical leave from school and honestly I wasn’t sure I’d be physically able to devote the amount of time and energy into this job. But I have. And I have had obstacles, hospital stays, getting sick at work, etc. But I haven’t quit. And that feels good. Cause sometimes I feel like that’s all I do. It’s not always my fault, I know. But the point is I feel somewhat normal. And even though I’m fighting hard behind the scenes for what comes naturally to so many others, I’m fucking doing it.
5. What are you looking forward to next week?
I don’t think I have any real plans yet. So 1) sleeping. And 2) going outside. It’s starting to actually feel like summertime and I really want to be present this summer.
6. Tell me about your favorite dessert. I want all of the details.
Oh god, the hard part about this question is picking just one favorite. I’m gonna go with the comfort food choice. Monkey bread. And I’m talking homemade. Gooey cinnamon sugar goodness.
7. Who is your favorite drag queen on “RuPaul’s Drag Race”? If you haven’t seen the show, please explain why.
Okay so I haven’t actually seen her on the show cause I don’t really watch it to be honest. But I’m definitely a fan of Shangela’s. She hosted the drag show my university did and she was just perfection. She ended the show with this routine to a mash up of Beyonce hits and it was BREATHTAKING.
8. What is your favorite thing to watch on TV while hung over?
Cartoons probably. Usually Avatar The Last Airbender.
9. Please share your favorite animal fact.
That snakes (the common ones people own at least) are the chillest pets in the world. The ball python got it’s name because it curls into a ball when it’s nervous or threatened, rather than attacking. Not really a fun fact necessarily, but I was a bit stuck on this one. I’ll think of something way better right after I post this, just wait.
10. What would you bring to a potluck? In other words, what is your favorite thing to cook for friends?
Chocolate chip cookies. I’ve perfected the recipe. Okay it’s from a Martha Stewart cookbook, but I have altered it a little over time I swear. At one point I was making these so often I had the recipe memorized.
So I’m not writing any questions since I’ve already done this tag. Though I was tempted to, this tag is fun!
I am however tagging anyone who wants to do this! Anddd you have two different sets of questions to choose from! Both @crossroadsred and @sweatersonlambs brought their A game with these questions!

West Week Ever: Pop Culture In Review - 5/19/17 (Upfronts Edition)
Since this is my 4th annual network TV upfronts recap, we’re doing things a bit differently this week. So, sit back and hunker down, as this is gonna be a long one!
First up, I joined my buddy @ClassickMateria for the Classick Team-Up! Podcast last week, and the episode is now available to download. We chatted about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, recent TV news, and everything else under the sun. Definitely check it out here!
Things You Might Have Missed This Week
Avi Kaplan quit the Grammy Award-winning a cappella group Pentatonix, because he missed his friends and family. I dunno about you, but I think that money could replace them!
Katy Perry has signed on as the first judge on ABC’s American Idol reboot, while there are reports that Idol finalist Chris Daughtry is in talks to join the show
The Big Bang Theory star Jim Parsons married his longtime partner, Todd Spiewak
The Flash cast member Keiynan Lonsdale came out as bisexual in an Instagram post
Hamilton‘s Daveed Diggs will star in TNT’s Snowpiercer pilot, based on the film, based on the French graphic novel
Conan O’Brien’s contract with TBS has been renewed through 2022, though no word on whether his show will switch to a weekly format as previously rumored.
DC stays losing, as actor Billy Crudup has left the Flash film, while it’s reported that Sam Raimi has turned down the director job
Power Rangers movie Black Ranger Ludi Lin has joined DC’s Aquaman film in the role of “Murk”, whoever that is…
Fox News personality, and former wife of California Lt Governor Gavin Newsom, Kimberly Guilfoyle has stated that she is currently being considered by the Trump Administration to replace Sean Spicer as White House Press Secretary. Gee, wonder what they see in her…
After 9 seasons, this weekend’s season finale will by Bobby Moynihan’s final episode of Saturday Night Live, as his series Me, Myself, and I was picked up at CBS.
LEGO Marvel Superheroes 2 was announced, but it won’t be on the Xbox 360, so it means nothing to me
In the Live Stage Show on TV department, Fox announced that they will air A Christmas Story Live in December, followed by Rent Live later in the season. Meanwhile, ABC will air The Wonderful World of Disney: The Little Mermaid Live in October
I covered a ton of renewals and cancellations that went down last week, but this week was no different, as the networks had to lock in their schedules for the fall. Here’s what’s been canceled/renewed since the last time we talked:
Cancellations
Shots Fired (Fox)
2 Broke Girls (CBS)
Baby Daddy (Freeform)
The Great Indoors (CBS)
Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders (CBS)
Scream Queens (Fox)
The Odd Couple (CBS)
Training Day (CBS)
Ransom (CBS)
Renewals
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox)
Speechless (ABC)
Fresh Off The Boat (ABC)
The Son (AMC)
The Exorcist (?! – Fox)
Timeless (uncanceled by NBC)
Law & Order: SVU (NBC)
Elementary (CBS)
The Amazing Race (CBS)
Quantico (ABC)
New Girl (abbreviated 8-episode final season, with 3 year time jump – Fox)
Code Black (CBS)
Arrested Development (Netflix)
courtesy of TVLine.com
So, as I pointed out up top, this was Upfronts Week for the major networks, where they unveil their fall schedules to reporters and critics. I’ve got to say that this upcoming season does very little for me. While last year’s presentations had me excited, this year’s stuff just looks like retreads of ideas we’ve already had or obvious film scripts that have been adapted for television. That’s something that you’re going to notice a lot this year: shows that would probably make decent movies, but aren’t something you’d want to check in on a weekly basis. The week started with NBC’s presentation, so let’s start with their new shows:
NBC
NBC renewed a big chunk of their schedule, and they’re holding a lot of their new shows for midseason (for which they didn’t give us trailers!), so there’s not a lot of new for the Fall.
youtube
The Brave – Formerly known as For God and Country, The Brave follows a multicultural team doing what I call “soldier shit”. That’s not to minimize what soldiers do; it’s just that there are certain things, like rescuing hostages, killing terrorists, etc, that are pretty much taken care of mainly by soldiers. Ya know, soldier shit. There are a lot of soldier shit shows coming this season, and this is merely one of them. We’re not necessarily in the most patriotic place right now, so I don’t know how these shows will fair. The trailer gives away the whole pilot, so do with that what you will. There’s an audience for this show, but I’m not it. Airing Mondays at 10, it’ll have a great lead-in in the form of The Voice, and its main competition in the timeslot will be Scorpion on CBS. By all accounts, it should have a fighting chance, so it’s The Brave‘s game to lose.
youtube
Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders – I guess enough time has passed that this case is considered “sexy” now. Back in the early 90s, the Menendez Brothers killed their parents and it was a big deal. The brothers went to jail, where they started amassing groupies like they were in a boyband or something. I’m not even lying! Anyway, this is an anthology series, so it really doesn’t matter how it does. If it does well, we get another installment based on another real life crime. If it flops, then they can just act like it was a One & Done idea, and throw it out like all the other Law & Order spinoffs we’ve had over the years. It’s only 8 episodes long, and the timeslot goes to Chicago Med once it’s done. Anyway, it’s perched atop NBC’s newly rechristened Must See Thursday Night, with This Is Us as a lead-in, so they clearly expect big things from it. Its competition will be How To Get Away With Murder, which is by far the lowest rated of the ABC Shondaland dramas, and Shemar Moore’s S.W.A.T. over on CBS. I think it’ll do just fine.
youtube
Will & Grace – So, this show’s back. Yay? I really loved the show in its original run, but I didn’t need it back. And while I barely remember its series finale, I remember something about Will & Grace not having spoken to each other for 15 years. So, is that out the window now? Who cares, I guess. I mean, if they can bring Roseanne back with all its continuity issues (yeah, I’ll get to that), then they can pull this off. I just don’t really know what the endgame is here. I mean, besides the fact that we’re in the Trump Administration, has the world really changed that much to be reflected in this show? I mean, any rights Will or Jack were granted are basically about to be taken away any day now, but is the show even going to go there? I just don’t see the point of this one. But it’s only, like, 12 episodes and, like all of these revivals, they’ll play it coy on longevity until they see how the numbers look. It’s going up against Grey’s Anatomy, Gotham on its new night, Supernatural, and The Big Bang Theory. Now, from a socioeconomic demographic standpoint, W&G and TBBT are going after different audiences, but I feel like the W&G audience moved on to Grey’s. It’ll be interesting to see how this one plays out.
Let’s talk about some of NBC’s moves. Both Thursday night veterans Superstore and The Good Place are shifting to Tuesdays at 9 and 9:30. Now, they will have The Voice as a lead-in, but I feel like they should’ve stayed on Thursday if NBC really wanted to rebuild that night. I get that This Is Us is the breakout hit of the season, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to move it. It means it’s gonna be an uphill battle for NBC’s Tuesday comedies, as they’ll now be going up against Black-ish on its new night, as well as the Fox combo of Brooklyn Nine-Nine and The Mick. As far as Tuesday comedies go, somebody’s gonna have to flinch. The Fox shows don’t do all that well, but the NBC shows are kinda precious right now. They need to be nurtured, which is what leaving them on Thursday would’ve done. The Blacklist, meanwhile, moves to Wednesdays at 8, where it’ll go up against the moved Riverdale and Empire. I think they all have different audiences, though, so it shouldn’t take too much of a hit. Thursday got blown up, with Great News getting the post-Will & Grace slot mainly because Tina Fey. And This Is Us on its new night will now go up against Scandal *in its final season*. The balls on NBC! I get that it’s their chance to install a show that could take over Thursday once Scandal is done, but this is a risky move. Meanwhile, Blindspot and Taken are moving to Fridays where they’ll die because they’re both bubble shows that were narrowly renewed in the first place.
Fox
Next up, we’ve got Fox, where a WHOLE lot of shows are moving around. As for their new shows, they all look like interesting movies, but they just don’t grab me enough to want to be a regular viewer. Fox is really good about that. I remember loving Lethal Weapon this season, and then I didn’t watch a single episode after the pilot. I see a lot of that happening this season.
youtube
Ghosted – Wow, where to begin? Two regular guys are kidnapped and recruited by a top secret organization that investigates the supernatural. As for casting, you can’t really go wrong with Craig Robinson and Adam Scott. This show is basically Hot Tub Time Machine 3, with more of a supernatural twist. The problem, however, is that’s exactly what this should have been: a mid-budget theatrical release that later finds its audience when it airs monthly on FX. This isn’t a weekly series, regardless of the fact that Robinson and Scott have fanbases. It’s slotted between The Simpsons and Family Guy, which sounds like a good thing, but that’s where middling comedies go to die. This season alone, that slot killed Son of Zorn and Making History. Now, it doesn’t really fit anywhere else on Fox’s schedule, as its “out there” nature makes it more at home with the animation stuff than, say, with New Girl and The Mick. So, that rules out Tuesday nights, which is the only other place Fox does comedies. Another problem is that Fox Sunday night just hasn’t been strong since they abolished the Animation Domination block. The Simpsons is a decent performer, and they keep it around to break records, while Family Guy is a shell of its former self, yet they don’t want to be the network that canceled it TWICE. Last Man on Earth is constantly a show on the bubble. Sunday nights need a shot in the arm, but this isn’t the show to do it. I don’t see this one having legs.
youtube
The Gifted – This is the one everyone’s got their eyes on. A spinoff of the X-Men films, this show follows a family on the run when they discover that their kids are mutants. It doesn’t help that their dad is a former mutant hunter, so it’s his employers who are after them. I mean, it looks OK, but I didn’t wet my pants or anything. It’ll be really hard to do anything mind-blowing with a weekly TV budget, but the pilot was directed by Bryan Singer, so that’s gonna put butts in seats. Hell, if Gotham is going into season 4 (now on Thursdays at 8), I think this thing can survive. It’s probably pretty expensive, but Fox has been wanting to expand their comic offerings (after all, Black Lightning was originally meant for them), so this will be a good fit for the post Lucifer slot. Speaking of Lucifer, I never thought I’d see the day when a show about The Devil would air during the 8 PM hour (its new timeslot). I wonder how they feel about that in the Bible Belt. After all, I originally said they weren’t gonna let the show survive, and here it is entering season 3. I sure called that one wrong!
youtube
The Orville – I love the idea here, as it’s basically Galaxy Quest: The Series. I mean, it’s clear Seth MacFarlane has an affinity for Star Trek, even if he’s spent more time reenacting the Star Wars saga on Family Guy. I’d love for this show to work, but I’m sure it’s on the expensive side. Now, Seth’s got a relationship with Fox, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they canceled it. It looks like the kind of show Fox loves to cancel. Now, it’s going up against Scandal and This Is Us, but I don’t think they share an audience. However, Arrow has been moved to Thursdays at 9, which I feel is its closest competition, as far as the male 18-49 demographic is concerned. There’s no way it wins its timeslot, so the question is what will Fox consider a “success” as far as its ratings go?
So, Fox’s moves are interesting. Lethal Weapon moves to Tuesday at 8, where it’ll go against The Voice, NCIS, and The Flash. It won’t win the timeslot, but maybe it can take some of The Flash‘s audience away from it. The Mick nows leads into Brooklyn Nine-Nine, as it’s now the stronger comedy, while Nine-Nine narrowly got renewed. On Wednesday, they moved Empire to 8, hoping it’ll be a good lead-in for Star. I honestly don’t think Star is a winner, and I think the only reason it got renewed was because A) it was created by Lee Daniels and B) its initial run was too short for them to gauge whether or not it was a success. For people looking for a nighttime soap as sudsy as Empire, they’re probably gonna choose the Dynasty reboot over on The CW, airing at the same time as Star. Meanwhile, Gotham moves to Thursday at 8, where it’ll go against The Big Bang Theory and Grey’s Anatomy. I think its biggest threat, however, comes in the form of Supernatural, now at 8 over on The CW.
Fox’s midseason bench doesn’t look too strong. I’ll take a quick look at those shows:
youtube
LA To Vegas – It’s a show about the antics of a flight crew that handles the weekend LA to Vegas route. I don’t care who’s producing the thing, this is gonna be just another forgotten Fox sitcom.
youtube
The Resident – Another “young doctor doesn’t play by the rules” show. It’s got Emily VanCamp, so that’s a plus. It could work. It looks very “Fox”.
ABC
ABC didn’t really do anything too drastic, with only a couple of new shows and a few moves.
youtube
Ten Days In The Valley – Kyra Sedgwick plays a workaholic TV writer whose daughter goes missing. So, the show revolves around the hunt, and the fact that she can’t trust anyone around her, yadda yadda yadda. ABC probably feels like Sedgwick was quite the “get” after her critically acclaimed run on The Closer, but I just don’t know about this show. There’s nothing special about it. Sure, there will be twists and turns, but the fact that you can already predict those twists is what’s working against the show. Airing Sunday at 10, its only scripted competition, however, will be Madam Secretary over on CBS. I don’t think Madam is gonna destroy it, but I simply think this show is going to struggle to both find an audience and also keep that audience engaged. And what would a season 2 look like? I don’t think this is a winner.
youtube
The Good Doctor – Fresh off A&E’s Bates Motel, Freddie Highmore stars as a young surgeon with autism. It’s from the creator of House, so you kinda know what you’re gonna get there. Ya know, he’s a miracle doctor who doesn’t do shit by the book. I really like the cast, with Richard Schiff (The West Wing), Hill Harper (CSI: NY), and Antonia Thomas (Misfits). I probably won’t watch it, but it could find an audience. The trick will be whether it genuinely portrays what it would be like to be an autistic surgeon. A lot of special interest groups will probably be keeping a close eye on this one, and I think a lot of people will be talking about it. Scheduled Monday at 10, its main competition is Scorpion and The Brave. I think it’ll do fine.
youtube
The Mayor – A young rapper decides to run for mayor in order to get attention on his mixtape. Then he wins, and has to figure out how to actually be mayor. This sounds terrible. This is the kind of thing that would’ve gone straight to DVD starring fat Anthony Anderson back in 2001. I think the network was just desperate to get into bed with Daveed Diggs because of his Hamilton pedigree. While it will have Black-ish as its lead-in, it’s slotted where Imaginary Mary and The Real O’Neals went to die. Just like Tuesday 10 PM is the Death Slot, 9:30 isn’t much better. This thing simply doesn’t have legs. I just hope it lasts long enough for the rapper and Lea Michele to become a couple.
youtube
The Gospel of Kevin – This looks like a reboot of Highway to Heaven. Jason Ritter plays Kevin Finn, who supposedly “isn’t a good guy”, even though the trailer doesn’t elaborate on why someone would think that. Anyway, one night he discovers a meteor, which actually contains an angel, played by comedian Cristela Alonzo. She’s gonna be his spirit guide, as he travels to country to gain his powers and change the lives of others. Yeah, it’s in the Tuesday Night Death slot, so that’s certainly a strike against it. Typically, new shows in the Tuesday 10 PM slot fail for ABC. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. only survived because it was a veteran, and even it got banished to Friday. Nothing can survive at in that slot, for whatever reason, and I don’t see Kevin bucking that trend. This thing is simply too high concept, and I’m not sure America’s ready for another angel show right now. This one doesn’t have a prayer.
Let’s talk about ABC’s moves. Shark Tank moves to Sundays at 9. I don’t know about that one. I know they’re rebranding Friday nights, but now it’ll be going up against football and NCIS: LA. I think this is only temporary, as it’ll eventually find a new home on the schedule – perhaps Tuesdays at 10? One that’s kinda controversial in my mind is the Minority Block they’ve created on Tuesday night. Things kick off with the struggling Hecks of The Middle, who’re then followed up by the Asians of Fresh Off The Boat, and the Blacks of Black-ish and The Mayor. I haven’t seen something this calculated since the days of UPN. Still, I guess we should just shut up and be glad for the representation. It’s weird because ABC’s Wednesday night is their comedy crown jewel, though they’re clearly trying to take back Tuesday. It’s just a question now of how they’re branding those nights. I get that they don’t want to move Modern Family, but Black-ish benefited from the 9:30 Wednesday timeslot because, even though they were different races, the Dunphys and the Johnsons occupied the same socioeconomic class. That’s got to translate into some sort of data for ad buyers. I guess you could say Black-ish “graduated” if they feel it can survive without Modern Family protecting it, but I hate that its old timeslot was given to American Housewife, which I’m kinda surprised was renewed. On Friday, Once Upon A Time moves from Sunday, while Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will take over the 9 PM slot once Inhumans ends its run. A lot of folks feel like this is the death knell for both shows, since a move to Friday is always seen as a death sentence. I’ve never understood that, though, because if nerds truly have no lives, then shouldn’t they be home to watch these shows? Anyway, these shows are still on the air because they perform well on DVR/internationally, so their ratings clearly aren’t the only deciding factor.
Oddly enough, ABC’s most interesting new shows are being held for midseason. Since they won’t show up until January, I’m only gonna do some quick drive-by thoughts on them:
youtube
Alex, Inc – Zach Braff quits his successful job to start a podcast company. This is gonna look so dated when we look back on it, kinda like Selfie (remember that show?). It’s apparently going into the Sunday at 10 slot, so I guess Ten Days In The Valley will have wrapped by then. CBS will still probably have Madam Secretary, but Sunday Night Football will be over, so it’ll be interesting to see what NBC puts against it.
youtube
The Crossing – Steve Zahn is a small town cop who gets pulled into a mystery when a bunch of refugees from the future (!) wash up on his beach. I know I said I don’t like saga shows, but I really liked this trailer, and I can’t wait to see what this show is all about.
youtube
Deception – a cool as shit illusionist helps the FBI solve crimes. It’s SUCH a procedural, and there’s the whole will they/won’t they trope between him and the lady agent, but I don’t care. It looks so slick! I can’t wait.
youtube
For the People – A new Shondaland show about young sexy lawyers doing young sexy lawyer shit. It’ll be right at home in TGIT, especially once Scandal ends and frees up a slot.
youtube
Splitting Up Together – This is a movie, not a show! It’s good to see Jenna Fischer again, and I’ve loved Oliver Hudson since Rules of Engagement. It’s basically about a married couple trying to manage a “conscious uncoupling” while keeping their sanity. And there’s the slight hint that they may realize new things about each other and want to stay together. I have no idea how this is gonna go, but I’ll check it out.
youtube
Let’s revisit that Tuesday night situation, though, shall we? I feel like Black-ish is only keeping that slot warm for Roseanne‘s 8-episode run that debuts in 2018. They wouldn’t use it to kick off the night, as Roseanne‘s blue collar humor doesn’t necessarily translate at that hour, and I hardly see them bumping Modern Family on Wednesday night. So, I could see Roseanne returning to her Tuesday 9 PM roost of yesteryear. By this point, of course, The Mayor will already have been canceled, but Roseanne pairs better with The Middle than with Black-ish. I see a lot of comedy moves coming midseason for ABC.
CBS
CBS is “America’s Most Watched Network”, so they’re not making too many moves. Let’s take a look at their new shows.
youtube
Wisdom of the Crowd – Jeremy Piven, with a fresh set of hair plugs, stars as a software developer who creates a crowdsourcing app to help solve the murder of his daughter. Sounds a lot like Person of Interest, right? I mean, didn’t they have a machine that predicted crimes or some shit? I dunno. I never watched it. I just know it starred Jesus after he couldn’t get any work anywhere. Anyway, you should really watch this trailer because it contains stuff that is totally possible, and I’m not sure that’s such a good thing. It’s probably where society is heading, but the idea of crowdsourcing evidence to solve crimes just sounds like there are SO many things that could go wrong. As you see in the trailer, they’re gonna play the long game with the case surrounding Piven’s daughter, as that takes a backseat to the app being used to help the cops solve other crimes. CBS audiences are older and not very tech savvy. They don’t like when their shows get too “techy”. Sure, Person of Interest lasted 5 seasons, but take a look at Pure Genius from just this season. It was about a young tech billionaire who was gonna use cutting edge technology to cure all the world’s diseases. It was canceled after its initial 13 episode order. I know Piven can be polarizing, so I just don’t know about this one. Luckily, it’s scheduled Sunday at 8, with no scripted competition other than The Simpsons, so it should have room to breathe.
youtube
9JKL – HATE the title. It sounds like text speak or some shit. Instead, it’s about 3 apartments. Recently divorced actor Mark Feuerstein moves into apartment 9K, which happens to be between his parents, Elliot Gould and Linda Lavin, in 9J and his brother and his family in 9L. So, it’s a multigenerational, multi camera sitcom, starring a bunch of folks who tend to star in shows that are canceled. Again, I think the title hurts it, but it’s the kind of show that CBS could take or leave. The Big Bang lead-in should definitely help it, but the true test will be when Bang moves back to Thursday. I don’t think it’ll be a breakout hit, as it’s not exactly reinventing the wheel, but it might end up on the bubble and eke out a second season if CBS doesn’t have a deep bench next pilot season.
youtube
Me, Myself, and I – Oh, boy. Where to start with this? OK, we follow the main character at 3 different points in his life: age 14, when he meets the love of his life, age 40, when he’s newly divorced and trying to put his life back together, and age 65 when he’s reunited with the love from age 14. This show is doing A LOT! The casting is what makes it, though. The kid is a newcomer, but I think audiences will take to him like they did Sean Giambrone as Adam Goldberg. The 40 year old is a hapless loser, played capably by SNL‘s Bobby Moynihan. Meanwhile, the 65 year old is played by Night Court great John Larroquette. Oh, and Jaleel White must’ve spent all his Urkel money, ’cause he plays the 40 year old’s best friend. For me, the casting is what sells this show. I really want it to succeed ’cause I like everyone involved. It’s just going to be tricky to navigate 3 different time periods, and is there some sort of master 7-season plan where everything converges? I’m really pulling for this one, but its quirkiness asks a lot of its audience – especially since it’s going to dance around CBS’s Monday schedule for the first few months.
youtube
SEAL Team – More soldier shit, and this time the team is led by the sidekick from Bones, while taking assignments from Don Draper’s “third” wife. It’s the familiar trope of “They do such terrible shit out there that it’s hard for them to adjust to civilian life when they’re home.” Out of the three soldier shit series debuting this season, however, I think this one has the best chance of renewal based on the fact that it appeals to the NCIS/CSI sensibilities of CBS’s built-in audience. Fun fact: the lead role was originally going to Jesus himself, Jim Caviezel, but was recast when Caviezel left the project over creative differences. He might’ve brought the Person of Interest audience with him, but seeing as how Bones ran for 12 years (and don’t forget Angel), Boreanaz probably has a deeper fanbase.
youtube
Young Sheldon – This is such an interesting experiment: a single camera prequel to an aging multi camera sitcom. I know CBS wants to keep The Big Bang Theory machine chugging along, especially considering it’ll most likely be done in two years. I just always felt like a Sheldon was a Less Is More kind of character. I don’t need to know about his childhood because I get enough of a glimpse from his anecdotes. I feel like the audience that enjoys him actually enjoys Jim Parsons’s portrayal of him, rather than the character himself. On his own, Sheldon is kinda unlikeable, due to his lack of social skills and decorum. Since he’s on the spectrum, however, that’s all forgiven. Now, I think Iain Armitage does a pretty capable job of being a young Sheldon, but he’s also very off-putting to the viewer. I’m not sure anyone is going to root for him. Instead, you kinda feel sorry for the people in his orbit: his family, his teachers, etc. They simply live in a different world than he does. I will say that Zoe Perry does an amazing job portraying a younger version of Sheldon’s mom, played by her real-life mom, Laurie Metcalf. One of the biggest complaints about The Big Bang Theory is that its humor kinda appeals to the lowest common denominator. It might be a show about smart people, but it’s not necessarily a smart show. That said, the single camera format tends to be used for smart shows, i.e. Modern Family, Arrested Development, etc. Will the traditional TBBT audience migrate over to this new show and format? I’ll be very interested to see how this does.
youtube
S.W.A.T. – Ah, the show based on the movie based on the show. I wasn’t sure about this at first. I honestly didn’t see Shemar Moore as a leading man. I mean, he couldn’t even carry Soul Train back in the day, so how could he headline his own series? Anyway, the captain from Stargate Universe shoots a kid, and gets fired (can you believe that justice?!), so his S.W.A.T. unit is handed over to Shemar Moore. Now Moore’s forced to police the inner city neighborhood in which he grew up. There’s gonna be a lot of Black Lives Matter vs Blue Lives Matter stuff going on here. What happens where you’re both? The show is executive produced by Justin Lin (Star Trek Beyond, Fast & Furious 6), but something about this feels like a late 90s NBC show instead of a 2017 CBS series. The same way we may not be patriotic enough for soldier shit shows right now, I’m not sure this is the show that’s gonna redeem cops in a lot of folks’ eyes. It kinda fits CBS’s demographic, but they don’t do so well with the TV shows based on movies (Training Day, Rush Hour). It’s going against How To Get Away With Murder, which is the lowest rated of the Shondaland dramas, but it’s also going against NBC’s Law & Order Menendez spinoff. Even with limited competition, I don’t think this one gets a second season.
youtube
And while this isn’t going on the main network, it’s still a CBS show. Star Trek: Discovery. All I can say is “NO!” “NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!” I don’t know what I wanted, but this wasn’t it. I know some folks are so desperate for new Trek, but I want it to make sense, and I want it to be good. I knew a prequel was the wrong move because technology has come so far, so you can’t help but make it look better than The Original Series, though it should look less advanced due to when it’s set. A lot of people are gonna “cape” for it because it has a strong, Black woman as the protagonist, but those people can’t see the forest for the trees. Everything about this looks wrong to me. It’s funny that so many of us were wondering how we were gonna pirate this show, but after seeing this, I have no interest. It looks like a well-made fan film. Pass.
Looking at CBS’s moves, they really played it safe. On Sunday, NCIS: Los Angeles and Madam Secretary both move back an hour, filling the slot left by Elementary (coming back midseason), and making room for Wisdom of the Crowd. At this point, CBS is the only network with scripted drama on Sunday night, so I think they’ll do fine. Monday is in constant flux, depending on whether or not its football season. When the season starts, The Big Bang Theory will kick off the night, before it eventually moves back to Thursday, ceding its timeslot to Kevin Can Wait (which will start the season at 9 PM prior to the move). Once football ends, Superior Donuts will return to take the 9:30 slot occupied by new comedy Me, Myself, and I (which will shift to 9 PM). Whew! See, that’s CBS’s big problem: they move their “iffy” shows around so much that they can’t find an audience. 2 Broke Girls was all over the schedule this season before it got the chop. Even if folks don’t watch TV live anymore, these moves make them forget a show even comes on anymore. On Wednesday, Criminal Minds shifts to 10 to make room for David Boreanaz’s Seal Team. Thursday and Friday remain pretty much the same. Like I said, other than the Monday kerfuffle, CBS played it pretty safe while introducing more new shows that the other networks.
The CW
Finally, we come to The CW where moves abound. First, however, let’s look at the new shows.
youtube
Valor – More soldier shit, only this time it’s with overacting pretty people and a dash of PTSD. It falls into the category of something I’d watch as a movie, but I just don’t like getting on board “saga” shows these days because they have so many layers, and run the risk of being canceled before answering all, or any, of their questions. If they’re smart, this is a one season storyline, and then they’ll have to reinvent the show for season 2. That said, from what I see, I don’t think they need to be rushing to figure out a second season quite yet. Airing Monday at 9, it’ll probably get trounced by The Gifted over on Fox, as they both seem to be male-skewing shows, and I see Fox winning this round. I also don’t feel like Supergirl is the proper lead-in series, but they seem committed to keeping her kicking off Monday nights.
youtube
Dynasty – I’m too young to have watched the original, but this reboot is The CW’s bread and butter. I don’t know if the characters or plot points are the same, but it’s rich, pretty White people doing trifling shit to each other. And it’s by the producers of The O.C. and Gossip Girl? Yeah, they’ll get a good 4-5 seasons out of this. This isn’t the first franchise The CW has resurrected, as they also did it with 90210 and Melrose Place. The latter didn’t go so well for them, but the former was a reliable staple of their schedule for 5 seasons. I can definitely see the same here.
youtube
Black Lightning – It looks like your standard Berlantiverse show, even if it takes place in its own universe. The question is whether or not “The Community” is going to support it. People always plead for diversity, but then they don’t show up when it’s time. If you put out a Black Lightning comic right now, it would not sell. It just wouldn’t. So, will White audiences want to watch a show about a Black inner city vigilante trying to clean up the streets – especially when there’s no lure of a crossover with the shows they already love? It’s being held for midseason, so maybe it’ll take over Legends of Tomorrow‘s timeslot once it airs its unusual number of episodes (seriously, they have, like 16-episode seasons over there for whatever reason). Here’s the kicker, though: according to the network, the show won’t take place in the established Arrowverse, mainly due to logistics. It will be filmed in Atlanta, while the other shows film in Vancouver. As such, they’re also not planning a 5-way crossover between the shows. That last part makes me kinda glad, as I didn’t really think they tuck the landing with this season’s 4-way “Invasion” crossover. People might come out for this, but they might not. I really don’t know which way the wind blows with this one.
youtube
Life Sentence – This is a movie, not a TV series. A young girl who thought she was dying finds out she’s cured and now has to learn how to live her life. I’d like it to survive, as it’s co-executive-produced by Bill Lawrence of Scrubs fame, but this has as much staying power as this season’s No Tomorrow. Oh, you never even heard of No Tomorrow? It was about a young woman who thinks the world is going to end, so she has to learn to live life to its fullest in the time that she has left. Yeah, kind of the reverse of this. It got canceled after its initial 13 episodes. Anyway, it’s cute and quirky, but I figure there’s enough there for about 90 minutes – not a full season. Anyway, it’s pretty clear why they’re holding this lil midseason.
Now, let’s talk about the moves because they are drastic. Riverdale moves from Thursday to Wednesday at 8, pitting it against Empire, The Blacklist, Survivor, and The Goldbergs. The show has a following, though, so I really don’t think this move will hurt it too much. If anything, it’ll give White folks a sudsy alternative to Empire at the same time. On Thursday, Supernatural moves to 8, while Arrow, ceding its timeslot to Riverdale, now occupies Thursday at 9 – pitting it against This Is Us, The Orville, and the final season of Scandal. Poor fucking Arrow. That is not an enviable place to be, but DVR might help it. If it gets absolutely killed, six seasons was a good run. I think it’ll make it to seven, but this move does it absolutely no favors. On Friday, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend moves to 8, while Jane the Virgin moves from Monday at 9 to Friday at 9. Online buzz is what keeps Crazy on the air, so maybe they’re hoping that’ll be the case for Jane? I know Jane has a fanbase, and Supergirl wasn’t the most logical lead-in for it, but Friday is always such an uncomfortable situation.
Anyway, after all of this, I think ABC has the best new offerings, though they’re holding most of them til midseason. I feel like NBC has the most stable schedule, and they’re taking the fewest risks, but CBS has more new Fall shows that I’m genuinely curious about. So that’s why CBS won the upfronts and had the West Week Ever.

NEW YORK CITY — Pound-for-pound king and WBO welterweight world champion Terence "Bud" Crawford returns to Madison Square Garden Saturday evening (9 p.m. ET, ESPN) as the headliner for the card of the year, a three-headed monster that will follow the Heisman Trophy ceremony. Crawford (35-0, 26 KOs) will make the third defense of his welterweight crown against No. 1 contender Egidijus "Mean Machine" Kavaliauskas (21-0-1, 17 KOs), Richard Commey (29-2, 26 KOs) will defend his IBF lightweight world title against unbeaten sensation Teofimo Lopez (14-0, 11 KOs) and Michael Conlan (12-0, 7 KOs) hopes to gain revenge on former 2016 Russian Olympic nemesis Vladimir Nikitin (3-0, 0 KOs). The ESPN+ undercard (5:45 p.m. ET) will feature Bronx-born super lightweight Josue Vargas (15-1, 9 KOs) against Noel Murphy (14-1-1, 2 KOs) and Brooklyn-born knockout artist Edgar "The Chosen One" Berlanga (12-0, 12 KOs), who has never seen the second round as a pro, against the durable Cesar Nunez (16-1-1, 8 KOs) in an eight-round super middleweight showdown. At Tuesday's media workout, this is what the fighters had to say. Terence Crawford On the pressure of being a top pound-for-pound fighter "It's a blessing because it motivates me and adds fuel to the fire. I like proving people wrong. That's more joy for me." "{New York} is one of the big stages. Vegas is a big stage. I do my thing in the ring, and every time I fight, I send a message to all the welterweights out there." "Everyone poses a threat. is a good fighter. He is a two-time Olympian for a reason. He's undefeated, strong and hungry." On his popularity in Omaha now "It's the same. I've been the around the city since my amateur days. Some people want a picture, others shake my hand and say, 'What's up?' "When I was at 140, everybody criticized me and said I was too big for 140. When I was at 140, everyone said I was too big for 135. If I was to go back down to 140, what would everybody say? I'm picking and bullying people. There you have it." On "sides of the street" in boxing "Well, Deontay Wilder is about to fight Tyson Fury and you never hear about any 'sides of the street.' It's just something people say when it comes to Terence Crawford. You don't hear 'wrong side of the street' with any other fighter but Terence Crawford. Why do all these other fights get made, but when it's Terence Crawford, it's about the 'wrong side of the street?'" Egidijus Kavaliauskas "This is a great opportunity for me against the world's best fighter. When I win, I will be considered one of the world's best fighters." "Terence Crawford is a great fighter, which is why I wanted this fight. I am ranked number one for a reason. I am here for a reason, and I can't wait for Saturday night." "The way to win a title is to fight the best, and Terence is the best welterweight in the world. I want that title, and I will be the first Lithuanian-born boxer ever to win a world title." Teofimo Lopez "If someone were to tell me I'd win my first world title at 22 years old at Madison Square Garden, I wouldn't believe it. It's huge. It's happening, and it's a blessing. We have the opportunity, and this is what we're doing. Nine weeks in camp. I know ya'll have seen the pictures. We're ready, man." "Everybody is ready. We're ready. He's ready. Everyone will be tuned in for a reason. All I want is a great night for all the fans. When you have a great style fight like this, it's going to be a short night." "We gotta get the job done on Saturday. We ain't there yet." "I felt much happier than all my other camps. It's a new me. I came back rejuvenated and ready to go. These last two fights, I missed that. I needed to go through these trials to make me the man I am today." "I have a great team behind me. I have everything I need." "We all saw what happened last year when I fought after the Heisman celebration. Look out." Richard Commey "I won my title in February, and I look forward to defending my title for the second time, my first fight at Madison Square Garden, home of champions." "I look forward to facing Teofimo Lopez and proving my worth in the ring. This is going to be one hell of a fight." Michael Conlan "It's nothing personal with Vladimir and I, but I have a job to do on Saturday night, and it's going to be a demolition job." "This fight is a long time coming. We were supposed to fight in August, but Vladimir got injured. I'm excited. We're ready to rock, and the fans in New York can expect a big performance." "Listen, regardless of what I think about the judges, I have never officially beaten him. I need to go out there and get my hand raised. I want to right the wrong of what happened in Rio." Vladimir Nikitin On the two amateur fights against Conlan "We fought twice, and I won both times. I know this is the professional game, and I am happy that I have to chance to prove that I am once again the better fighter." On the biceps injury he suffered that postponed the original fight date "I was upset that I had to cancel the fight, but I am ready now. The best man will win, and I am confident it will be me." Josue Vargas "I call him Canelo because he looks just like him, so I know Canelo. We used to train in the same gym. We sparred two, three times, so I know what he’ll bring to the table. I saw his last few bouts, and he hasn’t gotten better. I know I’ve gotten better sparring the likes of Jose Ramirez, Vergil Ortiz and Mikey Garcia. I sparred those guys after I sparred ‘Canelo,’ so I know what I’ll bring and what he’ll bring. I’m not expecting anything different." “He can take a shot and he's tough. I can’t sleep on him. I'm going to take it home because I have to show out in front of my friends and family.” “I know he’s confident, but I want to know why. I want to know where that’s coming from because when I sparred him his trainer took him out in the fourth round due to a body shot.” Edgar Berlanga "I didn't have a ton of people the first time I fought at the Garden, but for some reason, my name is hot and I’m fighting back home ready to put on a show." “Now that I’m maturing and getting older, I have to understand that I need to go some rounds. All my fans have seen is the power, but they haven’t seen the full me, the movement, skills, jab. I can fight like Pernell Whitaker if I have to. This is a step-up fight. If I can’t get the guy out of there, then I’m ready to go some rounds.”

Weekly Update 11/9/18
Tumblr media
General Studies:
Reading:
Some friends learned the poem, Number Rhymes, focusing on writing numbers 0-5. We practiced tracking by looking for the sight words line by line, as well as spelling the words. We learned the sight words, zero, one, two, three, four, and five.
Many friends are noticing sight words all around the classroom! One friend found the word “of” on the tag of our bean bag! As we read with partners, the friends counted how many sight words they found in their book. We also found new sight words as we read, for example the words little and big. Some of the partner reading strategies discussed include: sitting together with one book,” “taking turns” and “doing something together after they finish reading the story”. The friends also learned the importance of helping their partner sound out challenging words and not giving the word away (”helping not telling”).
Some friends learned how to read and spell words that contained the “ch” and “th” digraphs. We used new Montessori activities to strengthen these skills such as reading silly sentences and matching it to the correct picture card and using the movable alphabet made from pumpkin seeds. We also learned new habits to become even stronger readers such as scooping up words in phrases. We even used a real spoon to help us! This habit helps readers strengthen their fluency and expression.
Writing:
This week, some of our friends received their journals! They were so excited to have a book where they can write freely about their daily activities and feelings. It will also be used to answer a fun writing prompt. The friends also used their 5 senses to write about the park. We even took our writing materials outside! They used the outdoors as a tool to help add more detail to their first drafts. We also worked on handwriting skills that focused on writing neatly and the proper use of capital and lowercase letters.
Other friends wrote stories telling their readers about their favorite things. They included reasons and details. Some friends worked on handwriting, practicing Frog Jump Capitals, where you lift (jump) your pencil to the next starting point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Math:
This week in math some friends continued practicing how to add numbers using manipulatives such as unifix cubes, sticks, and drawings. They showed so much excitement creating and solving their own addition equations! We also reviewed writing numbers 0-10. Here are the rhymes that are helping us learn! 0: Around you go, around you go, that’s the way you make zero! 1: Straight line down and then you are done. That’s the way to make the number one! 2: Round and back. Then across the railroad track. Two! Two! 3: Around a tree, around a tree. That’s how you make the number three! 4: Down and over and down some more. That’s how you make a four! 5: Put on a hat then take a dive. Make a belly. Now that’s five! 6: Slide down and around to pick up sticks. That’s the way to make six! 7: Straight across and down from heaven. That’s the way to make seven! 8: Make an S, but don’t wait! Come back up to make eight! 9: Make a loop and then a line. That’s the way to make nine! 10: Make a straight line down then around some men. That’s the way to make a ten!
Some of the other friends continued to work with addition equations and word problems within 20. They were introduced to the unknown number in an equation and this concept was so tricky, we spent and will continue to spend some time working with it.   The friends explored with problems where the action, which represents the change, is unknown. For example, “Ben has 5 pencils. He got some more from his mother. Now he has 9 pencils. How many pencils did Ben get from his mother?” We explored this method using concrete, pictorial and then abstract materials. They began to notice that their understanding of number facts within 10 will help them when adding and figuring out higher numbers as well. Additionally, some friends learned to use pictorial representations to write expressions, and demonstrate that they are equivalent by using the equal sign. The friends also learned to construct true number sentences such as 3+5 = 7+1 without misunderstanding the equal sign to mean that the numbers are the same. The friends understood that when added together, two numbers make a the same total, regardless of whether one of the numbers appears first or second in equations and expressions.
Cultural:
Last week, the friends explored the Story of the Universe and the Seven Days of Creation. We used our scientific, theory based, lens to understand what scientists think occurred when the Universe was created and simultaneously learned about it through a Torah lens. This week, we learned about the Timeline of Earth! Through an interactive scientific, theory based story, we were able to demonstrate just how much evolution there has been throughout the Earth’s 4,500 Million Year existence. We started with the Pre-Cambrian Era, when Earth was made up of water and rocks. We learned that through the Paleozoic Era, most life on Earth was found only in the water until lifeforms adapted for land. The Mesozoic Era was most popular among the children, as this was the Era when dinosaurs roamed the Earth! It was interesting to see the change of life and spread of continents throughout the waters. When we reached the Cenozoic Era, the children were able to make many more connections to lifeforms they are familiar with in present day, including Humans!
Ivrit:
This week the 5-7 friends continued to talk about the Stav and learned about the changes that occur in nature in compression with the changes that occur in Israel during This time of the year. For example, there are some Migrating birds (tziporim nodedot) that appear in Israel during the fall season like a bird called Nachlieli. It has zanav aroch (long tail) and is shachor velavan black and white). In addition, a beautiful plant called Chatzav, is blooming in Israel. However, we see snai (squirrels) only in Brooklyn and not in Israel.
Yahadut:
This week in Yahadut the friends learned about Parashat Toldot. We learned the story using our key words ( Esav, eikev- heel, Kol, yadayim) we learned about the tension between Yaakov and Esav. Some friends reviewed the breakdown of the Torah into the 5 sefarim. Other friends began our new Tefillah unit, about asher yatzar. We began by exploring the human body and discussing which parts of the body we think are most important. The friends were able to appreciate that there are so many parts of our body that we need to be able to function each day.
Specials Update:
Art with Steven Strauss
Monday and Tuesday Art classes completed their first project which began with an artistic technique called a wash, which means working wet on wet.  Students applied a thin coat of saltwater to watercolor paper, then dripped food coloring and observed how the colors spread and mixed.  The following lessons focused on font, pattern, line and shape.  Students used pencil then black marker to sketch their names, then transferred their designed names to the drip-colored background.  This name-based project allowed me to learn students'  names, get to better know them as artists and people.
Thursday classes moved forward to a project based on the artwork of M.C. Escher.  Students created circle stencils, repeatedly traced the stencil onto 9x12 bristol board, outlined the circles and filled in the negative space with black marker.  Then we moved into color and pattern, and students are painting in the circles with primary and secondary colors.
Gym with PopFit Kids
What a great kick off month for our FUNctional Fitness program at Luria Academy! With our goals of having each child develop a true appreciation for physical fitness and a positive association with movement - whether it be jump roping, agility drilling, soccer ball kicking or running - we are excited to implement our versatile curriculum and find something special in each child’s wheelhouse.
Students were introduced to some of the fundamental principles of Fit Five exercising by starting out each class with a fun dynamic warm up to help activate the body. High-knees, walking leg extensions and low down lunges are just a few of the active movements that sets each class in motion.
Over the course of the first few sessions we worked on the start of basic locomotor skills, building through a combination of relays and drills that included running, galloping and jumping tasks as well as an introduction of cooperative games toward team building on and off the court.
We have definitely seen a ton of smiles and a few ah-ha moments out of the gate. There is nothing better than having fun, learning and getting exercise all at the same time.
Music with Yoshie Fruchter:
Last month at Luria, we had a blast continuing our fun and musical exploration! We focused on the concepts of “beat” and “rhythm” and started with rhythm sticks and shakers to practice.  We did some freeze dancing, some tick-tock beat keeping, and some major scale hop-scotching, using our bodies to learn about rhythm and melody.  After my recent trip to Sao Paolo, we had a chance to look at some instruments from Brazil and learn a fun (and tricky!) multi-part song about mangos, kiwis and bananas. Looking forward to lots more music creation, learning and fun in the coming weeks!

How to Plan (And What To Pack) For Your Trip To New York
Hey guys! I’m excited to finally be sharing a series of my guides about my trip to New Yrok a while ago!
New York is honestly one of the most amazing places you can visit – it’s almost a cliché to say so but it’s true! It’s such an incredible melting pot of people and cultures, a place where anything and anyone goes and you can feel (all at once) like a local and also completely lost at sea. Ben had never been there before, so this was such a great trip for us, with so much to explore and do.
Because New York is such a great destination with just soooo much to do, I thought it would make sense to split up the guide into key itineraries based on areas – I have always believed that the best way to travel is by walking and exploring, which is exactly what Ben and I did. Over the next few weeks, I’ll share with you a series of guides to my favourite things to do. And because you guys so loved my planning and packing guide to Sri Lanka, I thought it would be great to share something similar here – because planning your trip to New York can be overwhelming.
We’ve created this map for you to bookmark some cute spots. Enjoy!
How to Plan Your New York Trip
Trip Length New York is honestly one of those places that you’ll never get bored, and you can while away many weeks there. That said, it is possible to go for too shorter time, so at a minimum, I would go to New York for 4 nights. Our trip was actually 8 nights which allowed us to do soooo much and really get into the nitty-gritty of the city.
Where should you stay? Ahhhh the big question and the one that you’ll spend the most time researching and pondering. Having been to New York 4 times now, and having stayed all over the city (from Times Square on my first trip to Brooklyn, Soho, Mid Town) I would have to say that my absolute favourite area to stay in New York is around Soho and the Lower East Side. After having stayed in so many places, I found that this area has the best access to lots of things you will want to see, without having to travel too far on the subway or jump in too many cabs.
What time of year? There isn’t necessarily a bad time to go to New York (although I prefer not to travel in the snow) and there are always things on to attract you, but that said I’ve found the most pleasant times to visit are Spring and Autumn, when the weather is fresh but not too hot, and there’s no snow or cold weather in sight. If you go in April/May/June, or Sept/Oct you’ll have the best time. That said Christmas in New York would be amazing!
How to break up your trip? So, you’re trying to build an itinerary hey? This is the fun part of researching your New York Trip! That said, it can often feel like you’re going around in circles or playing a complex game of Jenga when you try to work out what attraction is where and how you are going to visit them all. To make it easy for you, we’ll be breaking down the city into bite size, totally walkable chunks that you can tackle easily. We’ll be highlighting the must-see attractions and cool spots, so stay tuned over the next few weeks. That said, what you do will always come down to how much time you have in a city, so we thought we would put together a few suggested itineraries for you:
Suggested Itineraries
3 Days – Day 1: Central Park and the Upper Easter Side. 2: Chelsea, Meatpacking, Greenwich Village and The High Line. Day 3: Soho, The East Village & The Lower East Side.
5 Days – Day 4: Mid Town & Times Square. Day 5: Williamsburg & Dumbo.
8 Days – Spend a few extra days in your favourite suburbs, or head on out to Montauk or Hudson for two nights.
You can of course swap days in and out if you prefer (say, if you are more interested in Brooklyn you can do that insteas of The Highline). I’ll be doing guides for each of the above days over the next few weeks!
Packing: Grana Striped Linen Shorts, Linen Side Button Dress, Apron Tank, Pencil Skirt, A Linen Dress. DIY Linen trousers and dress. The Simple Sandals in Nude.
What To Pack For New York
Given that we visited New York in the warmer months last year, linen was my absolute go to. Which is great because my friends over at Grana have just released more pieces for their amazing linen collection, which would go perfectly for your next trip!
Choose Comfortable shoes
THIS. IS. ESSENTIAL. Even if you were to accidentally leave your whole suitcase at home and could only take one thing, a great, comfortable pair of shoes would be what you would want, even if it meant you had to walk around naked for the whole trip (you’ll see stranger things in New York). For me, that means a really comfortable pair of sneakers – Springcourt is my go to for a brand that’s comfortable without screaming tourist. A pair of sandals if it’s summer (the simple sandals naturally!) or a pair of comfortable (and slip-proof) boots if it’s winter, as well as a nice pair of shoes for going out and you’re all set!
Pack Something chic
Or, everything chic. Seriously though, New York is one of those places where you can be casual, but I would avoid overly touristy outfits (ie the windbreaker, sneakers etc). As a city that is overrun with tourists, the best way to blend in is to dress, if not like a local, then someone who isn’t in a tour group (even if you are – no shame there!).
Layer Up
One major thing I have noticed from all my trips is that New York’s weather is unpredictable. Because it changes frequently and drastically, the only way to prepare is by packing a few layers. Of course, it depends on the year, but regardless of the month, a jacket and a sweater/sweatshirt should always be on your packing list for New York (as well as a coat during the winter).
Consider Fabrics
If you’ve been around here much you know that my number one consideration when buying/making clothes is the fabric. Regardless of when you are travelling, I suggest packing mainly natural fabrics in your suitcase – this is key because one thing that I have noticed about New York is that it can be humid. Even if you’re travelling in winter you’ll find that coming in and out of heating will make you damp and often sweaty. By focusing on linen, silk, wool, cashmere and other natural fabrics, you’ll find that you’ll feel much more comfortable. Grab more information here about fabrics!
Pack for the Season
Obviously, New York has very marked seasons, and chances are you’ve chosen your trip timing with that in mind. If not, make sure to do a full review of what the weather will be like while you’re there because this will inform your packing (completely!). The city can get sweltering in Summer, or you could be trudging through a foot of snow if it’s Winter that you’re travelling.  Take note also that the weather can change a lot, and chances are you’ll experience four seasons in one day. An umbrella is a must! If you’re looking for more detailed packing advice, check out this post.
For colder months…
A chic winter jacket
A pair of jeans
A warm hat
A scarf
Gloves
Cute boots
A warm dress
Tights/leggings
A cosy wool knit
For warmer months…
A light jacket (like this one)
Comfy airy shoes (sandals/flats)
Chic sneakers
A couple of shorts/skirts
A few tops
A couple of dresses/jumpsuits
One dressy outfit including shoes
Sunglasses
Bag it up
You’ll need a bag that works for trudging through the city, and getting on and off public transport. Something that buttons up or zips up, or perhaps even a leather backpack can be a great piece for New York.
Definitely into these linen pieces from Grana for my next trip! Show here are the  Grana Striped Linen Shorts, Linen Side Button Dress, Apron Tank, Pencil Skirt and A Linen Dress.

Fantasy basketball: Second-year breakouts
The collective NBA wisdom: The “leap” year in player progression transpires in Year 3.
My fake NBA wisdom: The moment NBA players are at their most underrated for fantasy purposes is at the dawn of Year 2.
Year in, year out — no group of players is more overhyped, overrated and overvalued than rookies.
We love our rookies. Their newness. Their boundless potential. Their lack of red flags. (And I’m right there with you. Over the years, I’ve developed a draft-season move of actually closing my laptop when certain rookies are thrown into auctions just to stop myself from bidding.)
Then the actual season starts. Rookie luster loses its sheen, as can’t-miss rookies devolve into inconsistent young vets. But every mid-June, new rookies are loaded up into the hype machine, and we do this again.
Hype, overdraft, repeat.
An eventful summer in the NBA will make for an exciting 2017-18 fantasy hoops season. Create or join an ESPN Fantasy Basketball league today! Sign up for free!
But you, the savvy manager, doesn’t give a hoot about hype. You’re on the prowl for one dynamic: creation of gaps in draft-day valuation. Chasms between perceived value and fantasy reality.
Discounts trend deep in Year 2 for the same reason Week 2 is the best week to bet in the NFL: market overreaction. Come Year 2, the sting of rookie overvaluation still hangs in the air.
Entering Year 2, do you think Brandon Ingram is any less of a talent then he was entering Year 1? That he’s less of a high-upside asset? I sure as heck don’t. Ingram is more of an asset.
Post-The Process, this season’s sophomore class offers a metric ton of sleeper value. This is due to two factors: 1) many of last year’s best fantasy rookies (Jamal Murray, Malcolm Brogdon, Taurean Prince) were waiver-wire types who flew below our preseason radar, and 2) the higher-profile rookies (Ben Simmons, Ingram) didn’t make much of an impact.
1. Joel Embiid, C, Philadelphia 76ers
Here’s one name we don’t have to worry about flying under the fantasy radar. Embiid will be the first sophomore off the board in every draft. If he plays 72 to 75 games, he could deliver late-first-round value … as long as you’re in a non-turnover league. Embiid’s sky-high-for-a-big turnover rate (3.8 per game) drops his value by a round in nine-category leagues.
I think of Embiid as the Rob Gronkowski of 2017-18 fantasy hoops. If reasonably healthy, he could deliver an imaginary championship. But if he goes down, you’ll be scrambling to replace a key player at a position of high scarcity.
Headed into draft season, I can’t think of a more pronounced risk/reward pick. The reward: 20 PPG, 10 RPG potential, with 2.5-3.0 BPG, 2.5 APG and decent percentages. The risk: He plays only 50-60 games. The season hasn’t started yet, and he’s already been tabbed as an in-season shutdown candidate. But if you want him, you may have to go as high as the third round.
2. Malcolm Brogdon, PG/SG, Milwaukee Bucks
2016-17’s Rookie of the Year enters 2017-18 with only Matthew Dellavedova to beat out for playing time. Minus his (absolutely) perfect free-throw percentage, I like Brogdon to mirror his production from the final month of 2016-17: 12.0 PPG, 5.2 APG, 3.7 RPG, 1.1 SPG, 50.9 FG%, 100.0 FT%.
Brogdon doesn’t possess superhigh upside, but he’s a solid eighth-rounder going a lot lower in most leagues. And don’t forget that his coach is one of the great fantasy point guards of all time … some of that is rubbing off.
3. Jamal Murray, PG, Denver Nuggets
I’m no genius, but I know this: Athletically explosive point guards slotted to run high-upside, low-expectation teams tend to outperform their ADPs. Murray quietly put together some monster lines over the last week of the 2016-17 campaign, including a 27-point night, a 30-point night and a double-double.
Denver is poised to have one of the buzzier teams in fantasy, and Murray should beat out Emmanuel Mudiay for the starting gig.
Playing with Nikola Jokic and Paul Millsap, Murray will lose out on some assists, but he rebounds well for a guard and should shoot close to 90 percent from the free throw line.
I like Murray beginning in the ninth round.
4. Ben Simmons, PF, Philadelphia 76ers
Technically, Simmons is a rookie. But I’m throwing him on the list in the name of due diligence.
Mock drafts, roto rankings, points rankings, projections, player profiles, draft strategies, DFS strategies — we’ve got everything you need to dominate fantasy basketball from every angle.
Every season, the manager in your league who avoids flops, nabs at least one breakout player and finds values others are sleeping on during the draft comes out on top. Heed our experts’ picks, so you can be that manager this time.
1 Related
Projecting Simmons is tough. He’s suffused in hype, but there’s a lot of gray area when assessing his fantasy potential. He missed an entire year with a broken right foot and will be playing a hybrid position (point forward) on a rebuilding team with a lot of question marks up and down its lineup.
Simmons should contribute right away in the volume categories. His assist potential gives him unique fantasy upside. But his spotty shooting history from distance makes Simmons a fantasy risk. Across 18 college games, he attempted one 3-pointer. And while Simmons can finish near the basket, his mediocre free throw shooting (66 percent at LSU) undermines his offensive upside.
Simmons’ preseason performance is key in pegging his draft slot. If he demonstrates improved outside/free throw shooting, he may match his ADP of 58. But if he doesn’t hit 3s and shoots only 66 percent from the line, he’s going to go too high in most leagues.
5. Marquese Chriss, PF, Phoenix Suns
After Embiid and Simmons, Chriss is next in terms of risk/reward potential. Chriss has been tabbed with the occasional Shawn Marion comp. Mostly by Suns fans, but in terms of across-the-board production, one can make out a hazy early-career resemblance.
Regardless of years of service, there aren’t a lot of fours in Fantasyland with 1+1+1 upside. Chriss nearly got there as a rookie (0.9 3PG, 0.8 SPG, 0.9 BPG) despite averaging only 21.3 minutes per game. The free throw shooting (62 percent in 2016-17) is a problem, but I’ve been drafting Chriss as high as the eighth round.
6. Taurean Prince, SF, Atlanta Hawks
Prince is the most criminally underrated sophomore of the 2017-18 class. Despite playing himself into a large role during the 2016-17 playoffs (31.2 MPG, 11.2 PPG, 5.3 RPG) Prince currently has no ADP. He’s in the lead to start at small forward for the low-expectation Hawks and should get every opportunity to build on a strong rookie campaign.
Prince’s value could hinge on his 3-point shooting. He reminds me a lot of early Trevor Ariza. Ariza was another high-upside wing who needed a couple of seasons to iron out his 3-point stroke.
Like Chriss, the 1+1+1 upside is there. Unlike Chriss, Prince is already solid (79 percent) from the free throw line. Prince is a great endgame pick who should return at least 10th-round value.
7. Willy Hernangomez, C, New York Knicks
Double-double potential with a steal and a block. If Hernangomez can log 23-25 minutes per game, that’s the upside. Hernangomez nearly got there (8.2 PPG, 7.0 RPG, 0.5 BPG, 0.6 SPG) as a rookie despite averaging only 18.4 minutes per game.
Hernangomez will get at least 25 MPG to start the campaign; don’t forget that Joakim Noah is suspended for the first month of the season. That will give Hernangomez an extended opportunity to play his way into an expanded role.
8. Brandon Ingram, SF/PF, Los Angeles Lakers
The fact that Ingram is so low on this list speaks to the depth and potential of this sophomore class. In terms of raw second-year athletic upside, he’s probably second only to Embiid.
After sputtering through an inconsistent first half of the season, Ingram closed 2016-17 with a strong final month (14.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG). He added weight in the offseason and has a new pass-first point guard running the show. The minutes will be there. I’m thinking 10th round feels about right.
9. Dario Saric, SF/PF, Philadelphia 76ers
Saric is the third Sixer to make this list. But with an ADP of 66, he’s going way too high in drafts.
I’m a fan. Saric was my preseason pick for last season’s fantasy ROY. He didn’t disappoint. But with Simmons returning, the drafting of Markelle Fultz and signing of JJ Redick, the basketball Gods have conspired to relegate Saric to a sixth-man role.
Normally, I’d be looking for Saric to expand on his impressive rookie numbers. Instead, he’ll be fortunate to stand his statistical ground. He’s a high-upside endgame pick.
10. Buddy Hield, SG, Sacramento Kings
Hield’s rookie season was a ready reminder that rookie potential hinges on environment. After struggling in New Orleans, post-trade Hield blossomed over the final month of last season (15.8 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 2.3 3PG). Proving a change in scenery can mean everything, he finally realized his fantasy potential in Sacramento.
The opportunity will be there. Minus DeMarcus Cousins and his top-10 usage rate, Sacramento will be looking for players to fill the scoring void. Think early Tyreke Evans, minus the assists, but with more 3s. If he can average more than a steal per night, he’ll return 11th-round value.
Other sophomores to watch:
Skal Labissiere, PF, Sacramento Kings
Thon Maker, PF, Milwaukee Bucks
Kris Dunn, PG, Chicago Bulls
Dragan Bender, PF, Phoenix Suns
Caris LeVert, SF/PF, Brooklyn Nets
Denzel Valentine, SG, Chicago Bulls
Jaylen Brown, SF/PF, Boston Celtics

We live in a world where crimes are committed on a daily basis. Crimes of all shapes and sizes are always taking place, each with their own backstories and motivations. Some crimes are just for financial gain, while others have some emotions attached to them. Especially in urban environments, crime is just a part of the people’s daily life. It’s unfortunate. But, as long as there are laws, there will be people breaking them. Especially for those who have paid attention to the recent leaks that have come out, the government seems to always want to be spying on us. There are fair reasons for this, such as the crime and terrorism stated above. But, most of the people in this country are simple law-abiding citizens. Massive surveillance projects seem like an endeavor of the future, but there are multiple ways in which we’re being spied on every day. Google Earth may not be the same as rigging a Samsung smart TV to appear as though it’s off and record your conversations, but it can certainly be deemed as an invasion of privacy. These 15 crimes happened to be caught on Google Earth, which is no small feat. Despite the “keeping tabs on us” mentality, Google only updates its services a few times a year. Unfortunately for these people, they were caught doing some unsavory activities when the Google van passed by. Some even had to pay the legal price for their crimes.
#1 Bike Thieves Having your bike, phone, and wallet stolen from you as you’re just trying to get home is one of those inconveniences that will ruin your entire week. You’ve lost most of your important items, and crimes like these are usually ones that go unsolved. Six months after a 14-year-old from the Netherlands experienced this theft, he believed he would never see his bike again. That was until he took a look at the Google Earth image of the street where he was robbed. The image the victim saw was of himself riding his bike, flanked by the twin brothers who stole it from him. Police were able to catch up with the thieves–who were already well-known to authorities–and get the young man his bike.
#2 Jewel Heist Google Earth has been able to catch some excitement while canvasing the streets of the world. Added to its portfolio is this shot-by-shot police chase in Serbia. Two men were about to rob a jewelry store as police arrived. They booked it when they saw the flashing lights, and police had to chase them down. The chase was caught by the Google Earth cameras and enshrined in the internet forever. These pictures aren’t as exciting as a live-action police chase, but the fact that Google was lucky enough to capture the drama is impressive. Pedestrians can be seen marveling at the scene as they go about their daily activities. The chase ended favorably for the police, as they were able to catch the would-be robbers before they could get away.
#3 Drug Deal In Action When Reddit user wowurdumb, a recovering heroin addict, took a trip down memory lane by searching his former favorite dope spot in Camden, New Jersey, he got a peek at what he might have looked like from the outside. The user posted a picture of what he saw, saying that he was neither surprised nor disappointed. The Google Earth picture showed a drug deal taking place at the exact spot where he used to buy all of his drugs. The user says that he’s clean now and that he’s turned his life around since his days of buying heroine through a fence. Nostalgia never hurt anyone, though, and the user found some comfort in the fact that he is not alone in his struggles.
#4 Shooter The reason this one didn’t make it to the top of the list is because there’s some dispute about its legitimacy. This appears to be a picture of a young man pointing a gun at a passing boy. Some have claimed that this picture was taken moments before a shooting, but there doesn’t appear to be any correlation with this picture and any adolescent shooting in the area. If this is a real photo, it doesn’t mean that the older boy shot the younger boy. He could have been pointing a gun until the younger boy ran away. Some people seem to think that the gun is fake, but it wouldn’t be the first time a teenager got his hands on an illegal firearm. Looking at the younger boy’s motion, he appears to be terrified either way. Regardless of whether or not this picture resulted in a serious–even fatal–crime, it was still a shocking snapshot taken by Google Earth.
#5 TP Nothing like a good old-fashioned toilet paper attack to get your day started. Many of us have gone through the ding-dong-ditch/TP phase of our lives. It’s the phase where we just do mischievous things just to do mischievous things. This was probably the first time we truly realized that getting in trouble wasn’t all that big of a deal. TPing someone’s house isn’t a master criminal move, though. In fact, it has to be one of the lowest crimes imaginable. But, it’s still against the law. Almost all of these malicious attacks are done by someone under the age of 14 and likely for no other reason than those trees looking like they could use some decoration. Thankfully, Google Earth was there to take a picture and enshrine this work of art for years to come.
#6 Quick HJ This is what we in the biz call “a crime of passion.” Get it? Well, these two may not be participating in a malicious crime, but there are at least a few laws being broken in this picture. For one, I can’t imagine it being legal to whip out your junk for a quick stroke on the side of the road. This was taken in England, and I’m not well-versed in English law (more of a bird law specialist), but there has to be a law against things like this. It’s not necessarily the case–these two individuals could be in the midst of a loving, passionate, long-term relationship–but there are a few indications that this woman may be a prostitute. Her outfit is nothing concrete by itself, but when your wanking (a little local flavor for you) a guy in public, especially one looking the way that he is, I think it’s fair to speculate. Regardless, this was an A+ capture by the team over at Google Earth. And for that, we have to be grateful.
#7 Murder…ish One Google Earth user in Scotland was terrified when she saw what appeared to be a murder taking place in full view of the Google Earth camera. They called police to report what they had seen, and police were dispatched to Thompson Motor Company in Edinburgh to investigate. When police arrived, they found the victim of the “murder,” Dan Thompson, alive and well in his shop. Thompson works as a mechanic at the shop, and he and “perpetrator” Gary Kerr explained to police what had happened. The two of them saw the Google Street View car roaming down the street and decided to make the most of their opportunity. Instead of making a sign or a funny gesture, the two decided to stage a murder scene. They had actually forgotten about their stunt by the time police questioned them about it, as the picture was taken months before it was uploaded. At least they saw the Google Street View car passing by, which is more than can be said for the next group of criminal masterminds.
#8 Grand Theft Auto Google Earth seems to be around at unexpectedly perfect times, and this is one case where it helped police identify the perpetrator of a crime. In 2010, the above car was stolen from the owner’s lot. He had no leads as to who had taken it, but eventually saw his location on Google Earth. As it turns out, the Google Street View car was passing by at the exact moment this man was stealing the victim’s car. The man was in the process of the theft as the car passed and can be seen adjusting his pants. It wasn’t until two years after the crime was committed that these pictures surfaced, so the identity of the man responsible still eluded the police. Fortunately, for everyone involved (except the guy who did it), police were able to arrest the man two years after he stole the car.
#9 Indecent Exposure The Google Street View car is like a little child. It doesn’t know any better, so it’s going to see everything that’s in front of it. Unfortunately, that includes the times you pull over to have a quickie on the hood of your car. While there’s nothing maliciously wrong with this photo, there are rules about banging people in public like this. Not everyone is a fan of these rules, but I can see why they are in place. This happy couple was enjoying a good old-fashioned shag on the side of the road when the Google car drove by with a camera. Instead of attempting to hide their shame, the couple owned it by waving and chugging a beer right in everyone’s face. We can only hope they’re still together, as you don’t see a connection like this every day.
#10 Google The Narc This story should serve as a message to all drug dealers out there—keep your head on a swivel; Google is watching. I know it’s hard to spot the bright-white Google car with a camera mounted on the roof. But if you don’t see it coming, you may wind up like these guys. This and a couple other Google Earth pictures assisted police in identifying the members of a Brooklyn heroin ring, as well as where they operate. This area was known to police as a hotbed of drug activity, and local businesses even shut down at odd times to keep themselves out of the drug world. With the assistance of Google Earth, police were able to identify and apprehend six drug dealers in this area—three of them are pictured above.
#11 2nd Amendment Right This picture taken in a Detroit neighborhood must have given the driver of the Google Street View car quite a scare when he saw it, as a group of teenagers appear to be pointing a gun directly at the vehicle. The Google cars are anything but inconspicuous, and sometimes, people who don’t want to be photographed will take notice. There isn’t anything inherently illegal about this picture. If the person holding the gun is of age and has a license, then he is allowed to protect his property with a weapon. No one could tell the specifics of the photo, so there wasn’t any legal trouble over this photo. The creepy part of this story is that a month after this photo was taken, a 1-year-old girl named Zyia Turner was found dead in the closet. She was reported missing by the family, but police dogs later found her at the bottom of a pile of clothes in the closet.
#12 Prostitution Prostitution has to be the number one illegal activity caught on Google Earth. There are so many pictures of prostitutes doing their business on Google Earth that they could probably make up a list of their own. Just because a scantily-clad woman is pictured on the side of the road, that doesn’t mean she’s a prostitute. That said, it’s not an unfair assumption that they are prostitutes. And, nine times out of ten, you’re going to be correct; especially when they’re caught negotiating with clients or stepping into a large truck in high heels and half of her a*s sticking out of her skirt. She could be a simple hitchhiker, but I think most people feel comfortable assuming that they are the ones getting paid and not the ones paying the truck driver.
#13 Burglary In 2011, an Oklahoma City woman was robbed at gunpoint in her home. The perpetrators held her for hours while they ransacked the place, stealing everything of value that they could find. The woman was obviously petrified by the experience and says that she was convinced that the pair were going to shoot her before they left. They didn’t shoot her, though, and the victim considered herself lucky for that. But, the two robbers got away and weren’t able to be tracked down by police. Three years after the incident, a friend of the victim was searching the victim’s street on Google Earth. She stopped at her friend’s house and saw that there were two men who fit the descriptions of the robbers standing outside the victim’s house. Police were alerted and were able to find the suspects who were inadvertently captured on Google Images.
#14 Illegal Logging For a few years now, countries such as the Philippians have been using Google Earth as a tool to fight illegal logging in certain areas. Using Google Earth’s aerial view, these authorities are keeping track of those who are illegally cutting down trees in their countries. The Philippine National Police issued a statement thanking Google Earth for their services, and they’re only one of the countries using this tool to combat illegal logging. An aerial view of the area allows authorities to detect when a certain place is being cut, and authorities are often able to catch up with the perpetrators before they get away. This element is universal and has made the detection of illegal logging in tropical areas much easier to detect.
#15 Brazilian Killings As many people know, certain areas of Brazil are notorious for violent crimes. Police and criminals often clash in the streets, leaving dead people on both sides of the conflict. Innocent bystanders are sometimes killed, and gang-related deaths are extremely high in some areas. This and a few other pictures were captured by the Google Earth car back in 2010. They weren’t on the site for long, which gives further authenticity to the images. If Google hadn’t taken them down, then there would be some who claimed they were fake. This photo shows a chilling image of what appears to be a body in a trash bag. It was accompanied by at least two other photos of dead people on the same street, giving a glimpse into the stark reality that many local residents face every day.

1/ Trump’s order blocks immigrants at airports, stoking fear around the globe. The executive order suspended entry of all refugees to the United States for 120 days, barred Syrian refugees indefinitely, and blocked entry into the United States for 90 days for citizens of seven predominantly Muslim countries: Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. The Department of Homeland Security said that the executive order also barred green card holders from those countries from re-entering the United States. White House officials said that green card holders from the seven affected countries who are outside the United States would need a case-by-case waiver to return to the United States. (NY Times)
UPDATE: A federal judge in Brooklyn came to the aid of scores of refugees who were trapped at airports across the United States.
The judge’s ruling blocked part of the president’s actions, preventing the government from deporting some arrivals who found themselves ensnared by the presidential order. But it stopped short of letting them into the country or issuing a broader ruling on the constitutionality of Trump’s actions.

2/ A federal judge issued a stay against Donald Trump’s “Muslim Ban”. The ruling – a stunning defeat for Trump at the end of his first week in office – protects from deportation refugees or visa holders who were detained at American airports since the signing of so-called “Muslim ban.” It also protects those in transit when the emergency ruling was filed. 4/ Inside the confusion of the Trump executive order and travel ban. Administration officials weren’t immediately sure which countries’ citizens would be barred from entering the United States. The Department of Homeland Security was left making a legal analysis on the order after Trump signed it. 6/ The silence from Silicon Valley had been deafening. After weeks of deafening silence and quiet acquiescence, top tech leaders finally began to react strongly to policies of the new administration, spurred by a capricious immigration ban on some Muslim countries ordered by Trump. (Recode)

7/ ‘Up Is Down’: Trump’s unreality show echoes his business past. Trump’s falsehoods have long been viewed as a reflexive extension of his vanity, or as his method of compensating for deep-seated insecurities. But throughout his business career, Trump’s most noteworthy deceptions often did double duty, serving not just his ego but also important strategic goals. Mr. Trump’s habitually inflated claims about his wealth, for example, fed his self-proclaimed image of a business genius even as they attracted lucrative licensing deals built around the Trump brand.
