A rando's pondering corner about Alear's story and journey
Spoilers for the entire game under the read more.
I don't think Alear ever gets their memory back by the end of the game. and I don't think it should matter either way after really thinking about it.
From the start I've thought of Alear as this person who was really struggling with the reality that they're a divine dragon or something more than an average person. It's because people around them and a woman claiming to their mother put so much faith and care in to them during their 1000 year sleep that Alear feels maybe obliged to at least try and step up to the title after Lumera's death.
I interpreted Alear taking up the mantle not completely because they are a kindhearted person, but because they are weak-willed as a result of complete amnesia. They need to depend on others.
It's kind of like a chick imprinting onto creatures around them, Alear needed others to be their guide as they journeyed around to get the rings back.
I say this because Alfred is suspiciously always close to Alear in seemingly every step of the way. Alfred is special in the story in that he's the only person who has been there from nearly the very beginning of their waking, who seems to have a stronger desire for friendship than servitude towards Alear. Starting from the first big incident in Alear's waking moment, he's there:
Tumblr media
Framme, Clanne, and Vander aren't even close to wanting to be platonic with them, I think. And I think it gets even more suspicious when I dig through Alfred's supports. Alfred understands wanting to hide unpleasant things and needing unconditional unquestioning support. Beginning with his C support I can see that he could be trying to help them up in his subtle, aware and conscious Alfred way:
Alfred: But look, isn’t there anything I can do for you? You’ve been awake a while, but it must be hard. Alfred: There’s bound to be a lot you’re still adjusting to. Tell your friend Alfred all about it! Alear: Let me think… Hmm. No, there’s nothing bothering me at the moment. Alfred: Good. Great. But if there is something, well, I want to be the first to know. Alfred: Before you left Lythos, you asked me as a friend to teach you things─to help you adjust. Alfred: And knowing you wanted to be friends just tickled me. Alear: Our friendship makes me happy too, Alfred.
Needless to say he's given presence and even a few lines in some of the serious cutscenes, like when Alear dies twice in that one chapter. But this platonic relationship ofc extends to a lot of other characters as well, though with Alfred's case it's about a dude and his dragon deity figuring out how to go forwards with a working friendship.
Alfred says to go to Firene, and everything begins from that one thread of connection.
So, that being the most explicit example out of the way, the other problem with Alear is just... their terrible heroic core for nearly half of the game.
And this is intentional. According to the interview with the devs, they actually overdid this aspect of Alear and Nintendo had to tell them to cut it down:
Tumblr media
Though they do get better over the course of the game, they don't learn fast enough to avoid succumbing to their hatred and falling into an obvious trap at Destinea Cathedral.
Marth warns them about charging in blindly, Alear says ok and will keep it in mind even before they stepped foot in. But then their rings gets swiped. Obvious trap is obvious. At this, Alear lets out a very childish, "Give... Give them back!"
Tumblr media
Then Sombron taunts them, turns their emblem evil one by one, and guess what, Alear. Succumbs. To. Hate. (one of the 3 big nonos in buddhism wooooo!!!)
Tumblr media
Vander even tells them to retreat, taking a leaf from Marth's wisdom. But Alear doesn't, and tries to claw them back, putting everyone at risk. They escape of course, but this is how weak in mental strength Alear really is up until chapter 11.
Alear at chapter 11 wasn't ready. Heck, Alear at no point prior to 11 was even capable of filling the shoes of the Divine Dragon. It's clear even in their class. They're a Dragon Child.
In fact, I never thought they were really ready until after chapter... I think 25? Yes, I do mean after reaching Solm, after accepting that Veyle was manipulated, after getting all Emblems back, after dying twice and being revived, after being an Emblem, after traveling to the past and only just after Lumera's second death.
In fact about the time travel thing: I humbly think, and argue, that there was no need to time travel at all if the writers intended to have Alear recover their memory in the first place.
Now, Marth's stance on Alear's memory seems to be 'ignorance is bliss', and it is. When the past is revealed by their past self, it sounds horrible. From the sounds of it, past Alear was messed up from watching countless of their siblings die in many terrible ways, including being fed to the Corrupted, and themself being nothing more than a tool for mass slaughter. So messed up that when past Alear expresses how they really don't want to kill Lumera, they just... break.
Their "Defect. Defect. Defect. Defect." line is very telling that if current Alear regains their memory, the trauma might come back with a vengeance that not even Veyle might be able to help.
Alear doesn't seem too keen in recovering that part of their memory either, and they have gotten enough information out of the people around them who has kept history alive.
In fact, speaking to any units after it's revealed that Alear was originally a Fell Dragon, many of them outright say that they do not care for Alear's past as a Fell Dragon, that only their present self matters. That their current efforts matters more than their past.
Which, if the writers then said Alear regained their memories, this whole segment would really be rendered moot, wouldn't it?
This is also fun in that it's about interdependence if you think about it. Alear has given his former enemies (All Elusians, Mauvier, Veyle Lindon! Lesser extent: Alcryst, Yunaka) forgiveness, and chose to judge them based on their actions after working together. Even support them. Alear's friends... pretty much returns this sentiment in kind!
Amazing! Wow! Beautiful!
(also guess what, interdependence is a big thing in buddhism whoooo)
About Lumera's Second Death
To recap: Veyle attempted to stop Alear from meeting Corrupted Lumera. I mentioned that Alear was not ready for the longest time, even after getting revived as an Emblem, but this was the trial Alear had to face. They cry about it as the fight begins, recognizing that there's no path but forwards with a sword through Corrupted Lumera's chest or something.
Veyle's attempt and failure was there to show how much Alear understood and was willing to face themself in a sense.
They do say hope is defiant and marred with scars and pain and all that. I think it's really at this point that I start to think, ah yes, Alear is now really gritting their teeth and walking forward no matter how much it hurts. Alear is ready.
It's only by finally being mentally strong enough, by finally being heroic enough, that Alear could get the closure they needed with Lumera as she dies a second time, as herself.
And again, this is another reason why I don't think regaining their memory is a service to Alear's character. There just isn't a need from a writing pov, or from a characterization pov at this point.
And so, Alear & co returns to the Somniel, to face Sombron
I rambled this in another post, but Sombron is really the complete opposite of Alear.
Sombron, when I take a step back and think about it, is just about the most pathetic villain I've seen in any video game, and I mean it in terms of his character.
When people attempted to lend a helping hand after he arrived in Elyos, Sombron rejects them and even kills them.
When his followers worshiped him, he actively takes advantage of them if it benefited, and does not seem to care for them. He never helps anyone at all, only ever using everyone as tools. Others may have supported him, but he never supports them back.
In the end, there was only one humanistic aspect about him, which is his longing for the one friend dead in the past. He doesn't move on, and he doesn't even have some egotistical grand ideology like 99% of villains out there worth rallying behind.
Sombron even argues that letting him go off into space would be beneficial to Elyos, because he's actually not interested in ruling. He just wants to find a copy of his long dead idol, who won't even be the same, having not experienced the same thing as his emblem.
And knowing that, Sombron still wants to do it regardless! From the sounds of it, it seems like he didn't even understand or formed a proper connection with that Emblem either. Alear had to highlight the possibility that the Foundation Emblem was protecting him rather than just showing off how strong they were to drive this point home.
And even then... It looks like Sombron learns nothing in the end. Doesn't even bother.
Truly, the most pathetic villain.
And it's... great! Because it mirrors off Alear so well that I have to clap my hands and go 'eee!' at how good the good dragon is.
Sombron craves and strives for true independence, whereas Alear has achieved interdependence.
And I think that is just about the neatest thing from Fire Emblem Engage's simple yet enjoyable storytelling. I really like Alear's hero journey and the whole premise of it, and the performance that their VA in both JP and EN brings in. Also Alfred, who is just good.
Imo, Engage hits everything for me. I think I'll come back to this one a lot in the future. Everyone who worked on this game has my love and appreciation.

Words left unspoken-- Flynn and the XBOX 360 ending
Tumblr media
Today, I finally wanted to make a post about something that might be a little obscure. Whether it truly is would depend on whether
a) you’ve watched/seen the original version of Vesperia,
or
b) you enjoyed the game through PS3 or Definitive Edition and have looked into the significant differences done between the same game.
To preface, I think it is no secret to anyone that the original 360 version did not have Flynn as a playable character, whereas Patty was just not present (though there was a hint in the original version, if my memory serves me right, that there were plans to implement her even before the ps3 version)
This is my warning to avoid reading further, as this entire post contains spoilers for the ending of the game, regardless of the version.
To make sure all readers are up to speed, it’s important to mention that Flynn is not brought along for Tarqaron in the 360 version. If the player wants to talk to him as an NPC, he would be present in Aurnion (and the Colosseum as an enemy if you’re doing the 100-man melee). Regardless, this significantly changes the progression of the ending cutscene, once you are able to defeat the end-game boss. I would suggest to take a few minutes to watch and compare the original vs updated ending, which I am providing now, below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e91L4AIKcyg The version used in PS3 and Definitive Edition.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgeMz8Vyocw The version used for the XBOX 360 version, in English.
[I want to mention that I think the part where the rest of the party runs up to Yuri is cute in both versions. In the older one, Yuri kneels to greet Repede! Um, they forgot Patty in the new version somehow, but I imagine she’s doing her Dream Star arte and is about to explode the others.]
Let’s put our focus on Flynn, though!
In the Definitive edition, you know that he approaches Yuri happily, and they both do their little handshake/high-five thing before running up to the others.
In the XBOX 360 version, we get something entirely different! We have Flynn looking up softly at the sky in order to declare his pride for Yuri, without Yuri ever being able to hear that, let alone know it was even said.
Tumblr media
Why does he not say it in the newer versions of Vesperia? Your guess is as good as mine, but I will still propose an idea: The moment was different.
Time and time again Flynn witnesses Yuri and the gang do so many good deeds without taking the proper credit for it. In the case of the original, Flynn is not playable, so he witnesses even less of what the party is doing. I think this cut away from the party perspective in the original to show Flynn is meant to assure the player (who usually may be controlling Yuri) that yes, he genuinely considers Yuri in that high of a regard. He doesn’t personally witness the defeat of the Adephagos in the original, so his only line of thought is to assume Yuri was able to defeat it himself. In fact, the original helps the viewer know that Flynn is perfectly certain this was Yuri’s doing.
Though Flynn goes through the same issue of Yuri refusing to take credit in all versions of the game, he is able to travel with the others and establish more of a bond (albeit awkwardly) with them in PS3 and onward. I think part of him not saying the pride line in those endings was also because he was generally relieved to see the Adephagos defeated with his own eyes. I assure you he probably still is proud of Yuri for it.
Let’s move on to a more interesting observation. Since the English XBOX 360 was very big for the west and there was no dual audio at the time, many players have missed out on how the line is spoken in the Japanese version of the original. So I wanted to compare them too!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5h6QoedZ9o&t=322s The 360 ending, in Japanese.
Tumblr media
INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER:
This part of my post isn’t meant to say which version is superior, but to discuss the choices done that make the lines both similar and different. Please keep this in mind I am saying this as a(n English) Language major thank you and godspeed.
Anyway, let’s put the lines together:
……君こそ僕の誇りだよ。親友 ...I am so proud to call you my friend, Yuri Lowell.
The website I’ve referred to for years by now does not offer a fan translation for the 360 version, but only for PS3 and on. In my experience playing the game in Japanese audio, watching my sibling play it in the dub, studying Japanese, I have found that the only significant times the fan-TL and the localization differ are when translating arte names. (Here is the website https://hyouta.com/vesperia/index.php?version=ps3p&locale=jp&compare=c2)
Some notes: こそ is used to put emphasis after pronouns. だよ is also used to put emphasis too, but in a very informal manner. Flynn typically ends many of his sentences with だ in Japanese, especially when he is speaking casually with Yuri and other party members. He even switches his first person pronoun depending if he’s on duty or not.
(for だよ: https://www.alexrockinjapanese.com/meaning-of-dayo-in-japanese-and-english-how-to-use/, for こそ: https://selftaughtjapanese.com/2015/10/22/japanese-word-koso-%E3%81%93%E3%81%9D-explained-in-detail/)
With my beginner-level Japanese, I will try to offer a translation of the former line, with the help of dictionaries such as https://jisho.org and the above resources to help me parse out a meaning.
“...You are my pride, close friend.” ← where arguably, switching close for the word dear might convey the message better. Frankly speaking, this ended up being the same translation as the one provided by a fluri quote bot that was used on twitter (pay respects for it no longer working).
Now, you might have noticed that I put an emphasis on ‘you’. Well, it’s because Flynn’s wording would be impossible to convey in the translation otherwise.
Let’s compare this and the official English localization! Several elements here are the same. They are marked:
...I am so proud to call you my friend, Yuri Lowell. ← Subject: I, Predicate: am, Complement: to call you. I’m not making the rest of the sentence now as it’s not that important. ...You are my pride, close friend. ← Subject: You, Predicate: are, Direct Object: my pride
So why is the English one so different? I can’t be truly sure, but even with a glance I can say that the syntactic construction is more complex, for one. I am interested in the switch between ‘pride’ and ‘proud’, with the former being a noun, the latter, an adjective.
What I also want to highlight here is that they ARE saying nearly the same thing. With the words ‘pride’ and ‘proud’ being able to be formed from one another, the meaning behind the words are not lost. In fact, when looking up the kanji for pride in the script of Vesperia, it is always translated interchangeably, depending on context.
If I must further simplify Flynn’s words, we get the following:
ENGLISH: I’m proud of my friend JAPANESE: (close) friend is my pride
depending on whether the difference is significant may be subjective.
Let’s determine the reasons /why/ the two versions wind up ultimately different while saying the same thing.
1. This is something my friend Choc pointed out. The possessive adjective. MY FRIEND vs MY PRIDE. When pulled from all context, the Japanese version comes out more intimate. But putting them back in it makes the scale more equal
I am proud + you are my friend = you are my pride + close friend
2. Troubles in translation: 親友 (しんゆう)
This kanji is not easy to translate. I’ve seen posts talking about it used in Naruto, where even there, it is difficult to emphasize the meaning in a translation. Even directly translating it like I did may come off awkward when in English. Translation and localization are one of the hardest parts of offering a Japanese text to non-Japanese speakers. And what can one do when the direct translation fails to impart the word?
You find other words that attempt to impart a similar connotation/meaning. This lies at the core of translation studies. It’s why a translator is REQUIRED to be a good speaker of the source and target language. The capability of having a wide range of vocabulary AS WELL AS being able to use it in the best placements are at the core of what one could consider a good translation. And even then, such a term is very subjective depending on which language speakers you ask. Especially when this comes to languages as different as English and Japanese.
But is 親友 truly lost in translation? I think the average English speaker is still able to infer that Flynn genuinely means his words in regards to Yuri. If not through one word, I think everything else that is said in done in the game is proof enough.
“I am so proud to call you…”
3. Cultural translations and implications
This point arose in further discussion between me and my friend Choc on the topic. Though I have operated with both lines saying they convey the same thing, I have not considered the semantics and cultural aspects of such phrases.
Firstly, Japanese is taught in a way where there is a large emphasis on formality. Most of what is seen in anime/manga/games can be considered at best informal and rude at worst. So it is important to keep such a thing in mind when looking at a Japanese texts. While we can translate something, we also need to understand how intimate it can be read, and subsequently, how would such a sentence come across in English.
“X is my pride” as a phrase is much less common than “I am proud of X”. And, subsequently, a speaker comes to alert if the former would be uttered. Why call someone the noun when you can describe them with the adjective?
This is speculative on my end but, in the case of Flynn’s line, I think it’s perfectly fine to say it’s intimate. That’s the intention! He and Yuri have known each other all their lives, and have been through the roughest parts in their relationship. They already speak informally with each other in Japanese, so such a line should not be too surprising, right?
Well, the perceived issue with using “You are my pride” in the localization could be that its meaning alters when it enters English. Semantically speaking, most English speakers would perceive this as romantically charged in most contexts. Part of it could be due to how direct it is when dissected syntactically, whereas the official localization lengthens the sentence and makes it more complex. In personal experience, many sentence structures I’ve already learned in Japanese are short and direct. Though Flynn’s line breaches intimacy, the structure is not why, but because of “こそ” and “だよ” that I mentioned earlier. Once more, the direct translation would in theory create a miscommunication of intention in the translation.
Ultimately, the most devastating part of Flynn’s line is the fact that Yuri will never be around to witness it. Yes, Flynn is still pretty direct with his feelings, we have that one line before the Aurnion fight, and it seems he can still convey his feelings non-verbally in a fight. But for someone who begins the story as demotivated and depressed, continues on to a point where his self-esteem plunders further, and manages to find what he wants to do while holding certain unhealthy ideas about Flynn (such as putting him on a pedestal, check the conversation with Sodia in Nor), Yuri probably really should hear those words, even if he is allergic to praise or positive affirmations aimed at him.
Ultimately, what can be done as a result is to ponder ideas after the end of the story and hope that Flynn eventually actually uses his words. But who’s to say! What did I do for this? I made edits. This is your reward for making it through my post. Maybe someday I’ll post them separately too.

26, 27, and 35 for majexatli!
What was your favorite enemy? Did your Character have any memorable fights or moments in combat that were ripe for headcanons and interpretation? (26)
I think the battle I remember most was the battle with Nere, I think in part because god to put it mildly it did not go well. The party comp was Wyll, Majexatli, Karlach, and Shadowheart. And for. Probably 2 rounds of combat both Wyll AND Majexatli were downed. This did happen a couple times, Shadowheart was on the other side of the battlefield so she could only do healing words to try and get them up and she did run out of those. And you know, since Majexatli is in a relationship with Wyll and Karlach, what a start to a relationship huh, where two of you are bleeding out next to each other over and over again while the other is decapitating people over your unconcious bodies ñlskdflñdflsññfld.
With regard for combat interpretations/hc... I think the most has happened in regards to Majexatli's wildshape and they're not all entirely from true combat. Which you know, makes sense, Circle of the Moon druids, their whole thing is fighting in wildshape. A side effect of wildshape is that if combat ends and you immediately go into a cutscene, obviously you can't be the one talking in the cutscene so it always switches to one of the companions and they have to talk or be the focus of the screen instead. So I think I kinda decided that actually, that kinda fits Majexatli, especially at first. For the entirity of act 1 and most of act 2 they have a +0 charisma. So like they are not the best person to be talking to someone, nor do they want to. So I imagine Majexatli avoiding conversations with npcs by just not dropping wildshape after battle. Similarly, Majexatli uses wildshape a lot out of combat. Sometimes just for fun (shout out to all the times I wildshaped a bunch just for fun and then forgot to long rest before a battle!). Do npcs freak out a little when there's like, a deep rothé or whole ass owlbear wandering around indoors? Yeah.
The other thing that came out of combat is, about you know. Just considering with Majexatli The Mental Toll that comes with tanking a lot of damage in wildshape and being forced out of wildshape because your wildshape form gets killed and then wildshaping again. Especially because. Majexatli has,,, lets just say some history with being killed in wildshaped before the whole tadpoling. So narratively I imagine part of Majexatli's transformation over the game has to do with the repeated dying in wildshape and its toll on their mental health. Cuz as I've said. To me these look like two different people.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who ended up in your Character's most used party? (27)
Shadowheart I think is the one who Majexatli almost always brings along. Majexatli is a druid and can do healing and some support, but also they can´t do that when they´re too busy tearing people limb from limb with their teeth in wildshape.
As for the others, it generally tended to be a rotating cast. The usual makeup was something like
Majexatli (tanking damage and doing some spells)
Shadowheart (support)
Karlach/Lae'zel (general fighting. Tactics wise the lean towards Lae'zel because Lae'zel's jump distance and action surge can be really helpful. But they favor Karlach because Karlach does actually approve of Majexatli's decisions along with doing good damage and because she's their girlfriend.)
Wyll/Astation/Gale (this last spot was filled in depending on what seemed good to have and/or who Majexatli wanted to spend the most time with.)
Has your Character done anything that they regret in Act 1? (35)
I think there's probably a few things. The two biggest ones are that they failed to save Mayrina (they killed the Hag but didn't manage to get her from the cage in time), and also that the guy from Waukeen's Rest who they saved from the burning building did die while Majexatli was trying to help him search for his wife. (I guess I as the player had assumed npcs wouldn't willingly walk over fire but the guy had one hitpoint and stepped in one of the countless flames. and i didnt have a recent save so I just went forward with it.)
In general I also think they wished there had been a few less casualities at the goblin camp. While Majexatli used non-lethal damage and just rendered people unconcious for the most part on anyone temporarily hostile who wasn't one of the 3 leaders, there still were some deaths and while the goblins were trying to kill them, they still didn't feel great about it all. I think there were a couple times where Majexatli really questions their use of lethal force after the fact.

What would you say are Amy's best appearances/portrayals?
Well, SA1 is the quintessential example given she takes a stand for herself while also protecting her Flicky pal.
SA2 is a weird one, since for most of it, she just kind of exists and might as well take credit for Tails' storming through Prison Island according to the fandom, but she did reach out to Shadow, even if her saying the exact same phrase as Maria to inadvertently trigger Shadow was a bit too contrived IMO.
Heroes is another weird one because it unfortunately had THAT moment with Team Sonic... but outside of THAT moment, I think she's fine otherwise for the most part, and her interactions with Cream and Big are nice.
And I guess I'll lump in the Advance trilogy as well despite them not having much portrayal-portrayals to speak of, since I do love her (and the other characters') animations. Although the cutscene in which you unlock her afterwards in Advance 3 did kind of pull the Amy threatening violence on Sonic schtick again, so that's groan-inducing.
And... that's kind of it, really. Other games might have isolated good or cute moments, but as far as overall portrayals go, I think a lot of them aren't all that great in retrospect, for different reasons depending on which game or adaptation we're talking about. Compare that to Eggman, who despite being used poorly in many games, still tends to have on-point characterization, with Frontiers so far being the only notable exception in my book.

finished the game & the dlc :]
- aglaya’s "let’s run away this is all fake anyway" vs daniil’s "when I look at you, I get the feeling that nature is playing jokes on us. It's as if both the left and the right hand have clutched the head to realize for the first time that they are two parts of a single whole “
- speaking of daniil 🥺👍 fucking idiot
Tumblr media
- that part where you go to an outpost and the changeling is there and tells you “btw, guards are gonna come out, so maybe run away?” was so damn scary. the moment you try to leave the outpost and out of the fog, in every direction, soldiers appear,, wah,
- chose the diurnal ending, so I let them destroy the polyhedron! probs gonna reload the save and go back to get the nocturnal ending too, just to see
- unfortunately didnt save any of his friends so this was a pretty sad view
Tumblr media
- holding back from ranting abt daniil so im just posting my fave parts of the conversation with him because like. I do love the different tones you can use
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- i completely skipped and missed the Kin quest so I couldn’t save them from the termitary??? and aspity died because uh yeah. destroyed the polyhedron, the earth bleeding etc etc,,, there really cant be a good ending for both the town and the kin, which is p cool but also man I am pissed that I missed that quest, so I’ll have to,,, play the entire thing again. at some point.
- my kids........... putting a photo of them in a frame and hanging it on a wall or something
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- I’m guessing the ending cutscene changes depending what you choose in the last conversation with Mark (or. well. what you do after it since yeah, the dialogue is meaningless)? I chose to walk out of the theatre but anyway. Pretty cool closing conversation, I love the meta narrative in this game, it makes me insane
Tumblr media
- MARBLE NEST TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
it’s cool that’s all I have to say about it, I already remembered p well the video by Codex Entry about it so it was nothing new or surprising, but I still enjoyed walking around the town and using the snappy Bachelor responses, as well as the last conversation with the Executor, as well as the little sidequest where the tragedian tells you to have heart and you literally bring them an heart. town jester moment
anyway incredible game, 10/10, I could never recommend it to anyone, I had a shit time going through it, and yet it was one of the most immersive stories I’ve played. I will probably play it once more in the future, but for now I’ll be waiting and crossing my fingers for the Bachelor route

are you positive james is not meant to have facial expressions cuz genuine question but I don’t remember anyone in the original game emoting all that much facially at all, even during moments where based on their tone of voice they should be, and I just assumed it was a limitation of the console at the time?
some of it WAS limitations but i mostly mean during the cutscenes, bc there WERE emotions. maria when she goes "ANYWAY? WHAT DO YOU MEAN ANYWAY?" at james, she obviously looks hurt and angry with james.
and it isn't about an entire lack OF expression, it's the deadpan faces and distant and gaunt expressions you see most of the traumatized characters have. but they do have expressions, sometimes subtle sometimes not. it depends on the scene mostly
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
maria by far is the most expressive imho
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so no. it isn't. james just is very deadpan and distant and pretty far gone in his delusions, depression, and guilt. even his body language is pretty emotionally distant.
Tumblr media
this captures that and the stretch of driving in a car for presumably a long time (his iconic stretch there). the reality of what he did to mary is nonexistent here. it hasn't even set in yet. the guilt isn't quite visible, but he feels the unreality of getting a letter from his dead wife. he touches his face, he bites his lip, he contemplates for a long, hard moment on the bizarre circumstances he's found himself in. besides that, he is so utterly emotionally removed from everything else. he's disassociated for the majority of the game.
"i guess i don't care if it's dangerous" in response to angela's warning, of course when he sticks his hand into the gross toilet or jumps from one apartment to another, or when he's in toluca prison jumping down all those holes. total detachment, and the reality doesn't truly set in til the big reveal, til all the pieces fit together and make sense.
that's when the emotions come back.

a few days ago, I finished the Azure Gleam route on FE Warriors: Three Hopes! so here’s me, back at it with all the opinions and takes and criticism and whatnot
and first of all: again, there is ostensibly a bit of a route split depending on if you spare Byleth or not, and again, I have ended up down the route where you just kill them. my approach this time around was to kind of play it by ear, try to bring Byleth in but not try too hard -- and still I seem to have ended up in a state of the Hevring map where you simply can’t progress without slaying the Ashen Demon, so as far as playing by ear goes, I figured that meant it was time to pass the buck once again. (on Scarlet Blaze now, though, I’m not kidding around; I’m genuinely not going to stop until I pull it off.)
but hey, back to the ones with less warm hands I guess:
annette is SO CUTE in this game I cannot withstand it and it cannot possibly be legal. every cutscene she happened to be in, I was paying more attention to her than anything else. a fair amount of it is just iterating on what was already an absolutely darling design in Three Houses (both pre- and post-timeskip), but it’s also really never been done better than here. I think I especially appreciate the seamless combination of the pretty dress and the heavy ass-kickin’ gauntlets, but of course, the braided loopies also absolutely stand out and must be mentioned if nothing else as a runner-up there. plus, design aside, she’s just as delightful of a character as usual, too -- you see, I’ve been through the desert on a horse with a face--
OH right, though, there was some other character who’s the protagonist of this route or something, and I was probably supposed to lead off talking about that (just as I did with Claude in GW), even though he’s not remotely as adorable, right. fine, fine, let’s move on to that
the thing is, though, if GW was finally Claude’s time to shine after being thorougly shafted by Three Houses... AG appears to be the first-ever route where Dimitri is boring. like, he still has a few outstanding character moments here and there and even a little bit of a character arc, if not one that was paced particularly well (that seems to be a consistent problem with this game, huh), but the long and narrow of it is that he just sort of gets everything he wants in this route without much trepidation, which denies us those intense lows and highs that were crucial to making the character as captivating as he is to a lot of people in the first place, even if I’m sure that a lot of these selfsame people must have been far less opposed than I to a storyline where Dimitri has a good time for once-
least I can say about this route, though, is that even if it’s doing staggeringly little with its protagonist (and, as I’ll complain about later, its antagonist as well), it does do a great amount of good by its remaining cast. where Three Hopes was happy to write off if not outright kill Dedue just to finesse Dimitri’s spiral, here we’re instead treated to Dedue as the center of one of the most beautifully indulgent cutscenes ever. Felix, as well, is forced to mature faster as a result of old man rodrigueroo’s switcheroo, which means he gets more time to show off the less unpleasant sides of character. Ashe gets his clash with Lonato redone with very few differences here, which mostly feels lazy, but it’s a surprisingly huge improvement to be taking that moment on with an Ashe who’s there because that’s where he chose to be, rather than because the church sent him there. even Shez seemed to have gotten a lot more room to grapple with their mysteries and anxieties here than in GW. in a way, I guess you could say that we don’t get no full-boar Dimitri on this route because it put the emphasis on what happens when his support network is actually working-
on the flipside though, it is a bit strange how much of their usual characterization a lot of the Lions seem to cast off as just past teenage cringe in this game. like, I do appreciate that Ingrid isn’t providing any further fuel for the “huhuhuhu CEO of racism” crowd even if she’s not really going to win ‘em over no matter what -- but come on, Sylvain growing out of being a philanderer? five years of war didn’t beat that out of him in Three Houses at all, so what gives?
but speaking of Shez, this time around I played as the female version (whom I’ve named Shez/her, resulting in my brother doing a spit-take when he saw it), and it’s kind of interesting how she comes across as a somewhat different character despite having nearly all of the same lines, because the voice delivery is just THAT different across the goose and the gander. I’m really not sure if I should consider that a feature or a bug frankly
anyway, I’ve made a note to whing about the antagonist, and this is as good as part as any to move onto that, so let’s have a look. you see... say what you will about Edelgard as a character and as an antagonist -- and by Seiros, people have absolutely the fuck done so for the past three years and are still at it right about now, myself included- -- but one of the better points she’d always had going for her was the sheer sense of agency. so you can imagine how pleased I wasn’t by the fact that half the plotline on this thing here hinges on completely removing that. I would frankly rather Edelgard had died (by Dimitri’s hand or Thales’s), or been locked away, than been kept around just to be mind-controlled. that does absolutely nothing for her character, and doesn’t even really enchance the storyline either.
not helping matters much is that, once Edelgard is out of her position as the route’s main antagonist, no one steps up to replace her competently in that capacity. Ludwig and Thales try their hands at it, but notwithstanding the initial disadvantage there that Thales is one of THE most uninteresting villains in this entire franchise (and I do not say that lightly), they don’t even terribly much bother to make the pecking order between those two crystal clear. and I mean that less in terms of de facto rank than just in terms of story weight, like... you know the thing where the Empire’s movements in war become laced with pointless cruelty after the switch there? there’s a reason why this would happen because of Ludwig (he’s cruel, selfish, and not bright enough to conduct things less destructively anyway), and there’s a reason why this would happen because of Thales (he approaches the Geneva Conventions as a drinking game). but there are also subtle distinctions in how plunder and misery under either of them would look, and the game just doesn’t care to stick to either possible look very consistently. is the Empire doing all that obvious stupid villainy out of callous incompetence, or because wreaking havoc and destruction is actually the goal? you get a different answer at different times -- so, who’s actually flying this eagle, again?
all this put together, I have to say, the latter half of this route is a freaking slog. like, it’s the opposite of whatever people must be experiencing when they complain that GW was over too soon; I felt like we were done with this storyline before the halfway point of it, and everything thereafter was essentially a pallid excuse to keep the game going. every mystery that was going to get solved, gets solved before then. Thales’s intervention in Arianrhod is the dead last plot beat that isn’t completely trite and predictable, outside of a few of Claude’s later stunts which don’t really get all that much attention from the story anyway. and whatever old men Hevring and Bergliez were supposed to be doing around here as Camus types, it’s not panning out, plain and simple.
and while I’m dragging things -- man alive, I feel like I’ve gone so high and then so low in terms of the base camp song. I like the idea of each route having a distinct one in theory, but in practice I just missed the GW camp song the entire time I was playing AG- and I don’t think it was just sheer saudosism either, because I’m in SR now and I actually like the camp song again, even if I don’t love it as much as GW’s.
there’s a bit less for me to say overall in this sojourn -- not because the route was that much lesser per se, but also because I’m fresh out of first-impression comments to make. like, the worldbuilding is still great, nothing to report there; the gameplay is still enjoyable whenever it’s not a pain in the ass (although at least now I know how to check S-rank requirements and whether I’m currently meeting them in the middle of a battle, which is a vast improvement-). and unlike GW’s Holst and SR’s Monica, here we do not have a heretofore unbuilt character making their debut; Rodrigue more or less takes up the analogous position (at least until he gets killed in a cheap and uninteresting manner that does a disservice to his great death scene in Azure Moon), but he was already a major character previously, so, little change.
(far as gameplay goes, I suppose one thing I can say is that goddamn, just like some of the Lions were among the most busted units in Three Houses, here some of them have the absolute best personal skills around. the only regrets I have wrt running Sylvain’s Gordian Stroke on sword classes are that, one, he kept leveling up way ahead of the rest of the crew, and two, my brain will now never release me from the jokes about Sylvain’s sword getting longer. ... I guess that would’ve been even worse if I’d gone with his default lance-wielding class line.)
still, in the end, I have to say I found Azure Gleam to be noticeably inferior to Golden Wildfire as a route -- and I don’t just say that out of sheer Claude bias, not when I definitely would not say that of the analogous Azure Moon vs Verdant Wind comparison. but oh well, it’s not as if it was a bad time, per se; if nothing else, I can’t overstate how good it is to see Dedue being treated properly as a character this time.
either way, we’ll have more to discuss once I’m back down from the eagle’s nest -- but I think I’m far enough in already to offer up a few things! y’know, just things like “monica good”, “caspar sounds like he just somehow hit reverse puberty”, and “nothing but the utmost awe for Billy Kametz’s absolutely unimpeachable final performance”. oh, and of course, GATEKEEPER REAL.

Hi I hate downloading programs and spending money but I’m very interested in your fire emblem guys. Do you have any advice as to how I can best look into more details about them?
You are at the correct address, friend. You say you hate downloading programs but alas it is the best way to not spend money.
In the following you will find a basic summary of FEA, an abridged 3DS emulation guide, and whatever else abt FEA i word vomited.
This got long.
Basic Gist: My Guys (this is the second time someone has called them that, amazing) are Chrom and Robin from Fire Emblem Awakening for the 3DS. If you just want the basics, you can watch a let's play of them, I guess? I used this cutscene compilation to check things for my. fea fanfic. and god bless it is a playthrough where chrom and robin are married because it just makes the story better. it does.
If you don't know shit about FEA: Chrom, prince of the halidom of Ylisse, finds an amnesiac tactician out in a field. They, Robin, join his militia, the Shepherds. The group sets off to combat a new threat of zombies. At the same time, they attempt to solve the mystery of "Marth", a masked person who came through a weird portal together with the zombies.
Listen man you know who "Marth" is. I don't need to tell you.
If you don't know shit about Fire Emblem: FE is an SRPG fantasy series frequently referred to as "anime chess" because it is. It has a permadeath mechanic (if a unit dies, they r gone forever) but newer games, including FEA, also include a non-permanent death mode. The choice is yours.
The writing: certainly questionable sometimes. The Valm Arc™ is kind of famous as filler, because a new character gets to be protagonist for a few chapters. Say'ri, you're neat an' all, but do we need to do this?
Disclaimers: fea is kinda colorist. Which if you know fire emblem is (deep sigh) to be expected. Why are only non-playable Plegian characters brown and all the playable ones white? You know why.
Side characters rely heavily on gimmicks to define them which is either endearing or annoying. Depends on you. Also there is a loli dragon and I've seen THREE separate mods that redesign her. God people hate nowi's design (i'm people)
The game has a marriage mechanic. If two characters reach Support Rank S, they get married (straight married only though there IS a gay mod). Then their time traveling kid from the future shows up. You can have Chrom and Robin get married in-game (if Robin is a girl. I specifically picked F!Robin to do so) but they will REGARDLESS be the sappiest bitches on earth about each other. Even if they are married to other people. It can feel kind of awkward, I'd imagine.
Despite my disclaimers I will say that I was overall engaged with FEA's story on a moment to moment basis; it moves at a brisk pace without dragging, I found the emotional conceit at the heart of it all deeply compelling, and I overall just had a lot of fun.
With a cutscene comp you get the usual drawbacks: no side content. Some of the supports (optional conversations between characters) are fucking hilarious (looking at henry) and you also miss out on paralogues (sidequests) which include the second generation characters besides Lucina (my daughter whom I love).
If it's 3DS emulation you're looking for, Citra is your best friend. It's available for both PC, both Windows and Linux, though I have better experience on the former. It also has an Android App now, and from my scant experience with it, it runs great. Citra is definetly the No. 1 3DS emulator. No competition.
If your PC isn't on the higher end, fiddle with settings until you get to a grade of chugging that you're comfy with. I don't know what i did to get the game run smooth. Set audio to mono though bcuz it cuts out echo from lag.
As for a totally legit copy of Awakening, my usual go to vimm's lair doesn't have it, but the Reddit Roms Megathread does. Reddit is the best piracy help site fr.
Awakening Rom: Here. It's in alphabetical order, so scroll down to F till you find it. Or use the search bar.
Awakening DLC: Here. Same as above, use the search bar. Europe or USA version at your discretion.
If Citra complains that the files are encrypted: use the Batch Cia Decryptor. It's for windows.
DLC can be installed via the handy dandy "Add DLC" button citra has. I recommend dlc solely because the Future Past dlc has soo much Grima characterization that makes me go rabid. Highly recommend. I watched cutscenes of this one because I'm not smart enough to actually beat it.
When playing on Citra, I recommend turning off battle animations, since they're the laggiest part to emulate. Without them, my game ran smooth.
If you specifically want to see Chrobin, you will get more than enough of them in the base game. If you want to see my babygirl grima, you will likely question my choice in blorbos from base game alone.
There's also Fire Emblem Heroes, the mobile game, which has the famous day of devotion Chrobin duo unit, but: not worth it.
On gameplay tips: I'm very bad at strategy games. FEA is toughest early game in my opinion. Use Frederick liberally for his high defense stat until he's trash mid-game. Pair up is busted. If you pair Lon'qu up with someone who gives him + Speed (like Panne <- I am biased toward this pairing) he is basically unhittable.
Chrom and Robin are both very good units who will SHRED. robin's future kid morgan also shreds. #morgansweep. there's like. a whole skill inheritance system and like ideal parent combos for good stats or whatever but I got by fine ignoring it. i benched basically all of the second gen units except morgan and lucina. rip to them.
The base game can be vry easy it's just the dlc that is Very Difficult <- looked dlc up on youtube.
Additional Chrobin content includes, once again FEH, but i mainly just look at the art anyway, Fire Emblem Warriors (solid mid tier game but high tier co-op chaos experience with extremely garbage plot), and most recently the Fire Emblem Engage DLC, where Chrom and Robin get to chill in a bracelet as ghosts together. I don't have engage i just (once again) looked it up on youtube.
If you do decide to play FEA and like it, i will recommend you my favorite chrobin fics in a heartbeat. And, god forbid, you like Grima a smidgen as much as I do, i have. so many thoughts about him. And fic recs. Chrom/Grima ficrecs even. I love chrobin and chrom/grima equally because [if my incessant posting didn't spoil this twist i will be geniuenly suprised.]
TLDR:
watch cutscenes of FEA on youtube or emulate it ig. have fun.

both by virtue of simply being observant and his keen soulsight, hyth can read most people like books. given that the echo is canonically explained as a fraction or echo of the ancients’ power, my in-character explanation for screenshots of hyth in cutscenes taking the wol’s place in the main verse is that he wasn’t/isn’t actually There, he’s just seeing/experiencing the WoL’s memories, since memories are aether and appear to be tied to the soul. he’s more or less mastered the ability to pick and choose which memories he sees, as well as the ability not to look, if he so chooses (although in his younger years, it was extremely difficult for him to control, and he can still be sucked in to viewing memories/not being able to look away during emotionally fraught situations concerning those close to him.) for him, a person’s memories are like a pool, with memories with emotional signifigance and/or memories that a person happens to be currently/strongly focusing on at present rising to the surface and being the most visible and immediately accessible for him. that said, he can’t directly read minds or see the future (although it does allow him to make pretty good guesses about either). some memories require more effort to access (and his ability to do this depends a number of factors concerning the individual to whom said memories belong), and nor does he generally go digging for hard-to-reach memories without permission or purpose. that said, what he sees probably comes in longer segments akin to what the wol experiences when they see the past with the echo; they don’t give him the full story, furnishing him with pieces of it instead.)
i think being able to potentially witness years’ worth of a person’s memories within moments played a role in him being super understanding and accepting of the WoL when he met them in mare lamentorum. it’s why he’s got the vibe of someone who already knows what you’re going to say/do (because he’s already skimmed the surface and made a pretty good guess as to what that might be.) wrt the kairos incident, because kairos physically erased the memories of the targeted individuals and seemingly the area itself (as i think hermes verbally mentioned emet, hyth and himself as well as the locations and times), all memories of what happened were not only erased from the targeted individuals, but the surrounding environment itself as well, meaning that hyth (or anyone else) would essentially see a blank spot instead of seeing memories of the incident. (as a side note, i do wish we had more lore about how kairos functioned and how it impacts memories specifically but w/e.)

Tbf Xiao has made some progress. Just a tiny inch of progress (ie: saying he'll try to rely/ hang out with heroes more.) I still feel his character arc has moved forwards, which I really appreciate, especially considering how strong some of his moments were.
Like he thinks that as someone destined for misery, self sacrifice is a good ending, bc he's so down in the dumps that actually having a good life is impossible in his mind.
By the end though, he's open to the thought of companionship, which might evolve into something he finds joy and comfort in. Maybe thru the power of friendship, he can find the motivation to have hope in the future. That's how i expect the trajectory of his arc to go at least.
Anyway, for the honour of having some very strong emotional punches in his quests, an angsty backstory and a lot of potential moving forward, Xiao officially joins kaeya, tarts, itto and venti in my heart as "the goodest genshin characters." I just wish there were some women there, too...
I also hope itto gets fed this well whenever its his turn in the spotlight again. And Venti. I dont count irodori or this event as Itto or Venti's true to real reruns bc their narratives are still where they were stuck in act one. Kinda like how xiao was in lantern right 2022 but not rly.
I... kind of wonder about Xiao’s progress in the context of the actual story being told about him here, though. The main recurring issue in this chapter was Xiao’s casual willingness to throw his life away to protect others and his lack of consideration for himself - that’s what the conflict with Yelan was about, and Yanfei’s later criticisms/the first part of the conversation with the Traveler are built on it. I’d actually squinted at the sudden “spend time with people that make you happy!”/teamwork moral as HYV clumsily trying to avoid the subject -  especially since Ushi’s advice/Paimon’s speech at the end is a direct response to Xiao warning the group to stay away from him because of his karma and was kind of a change of subject from Xiao’s frank discussion about his mental illness.
I just really hope HYV aren’t missing the forest for the trees, when the reason he keeps people away is so that he can more effectively throw himself on the sword for them. Because he IS lonely, and he SHOULD spend more time with others, but that was not the aspect of his character this event was focusing on, so it felt like a very sudden copout - thus why I felt no progress was made in regards to the issues given attention during Act III. Because that. That was just.
“Hey Xiao, you know glorifying heroic deaths is bad and you shouldn’t want that for yourself, right?”
“Yep.”
“Okay. Just checking. Anyway, about avoiding people because of your karma...”
*insert cutscene glorifying Bosacius’ heroic death here*
I guess we’ll see if Xiao decides to be proactive at all. I do basically think that’s going to be Xiao’s arc, yeah. At the moment it seems the only thing he wants for himself is to dance to Venti’s music... so I wonder if he’ll ever get the guts to go find Venti and ask. It’d be nice if he got more comfortable doing that. Maybe that’ll be how his arc ends. In 8 years. ......................aha. ha.
BUT in general I do really like Xiao’s writing this time. Given how horrendously he’s been mishandled in events prior to this, he was really strong this time. Also, weren’t the people he’d come to consider heroes the yaksha he’d called slaughterers and those that died in the Chasm, following his realisations about Bosacius’ death changing how he felt about what happened...? I wonder if that line was mistranslated. Who are you going to rely on, Xiao, the dead...?
In general I do think this event marks a rather large improvement in Genshin’s writing. Xiao finally has Good Character Writing, but the writing around him is under heavy consideration For Now. Depends where it goes. We’ll see.
anyway, it’s good to be a xiao main rn. god i just want to take him on a magical adventure around the world where he broadens his horizons and finds new things to care about beyond his duty. join my party, fucker

ok nvm i’m yelling a bit now bc i gotta -- MASSIVE endwalker spoilers
me, having a realization: flan & venat actually come from incredibly similar ideals & worldviews and i don’t think it’s wrong to think that (given her growth in endwalker) venat could serve as a sort of glimpse into what sort of person flan could become given the time
(Thou Must Live, Die, and Know cutscene plays)
me: well fuck
-
drawing direct parallel’s between venat’s walk after the sundering and the WOL’s push towards Emet obviously has MASSIVE thematic elements beyond my own oc thoughts but i’d been thinking for a while that venat was probably the closest to flan characterwise (IN ENDWALKER!! A LOT OF STUFF CHANGES FLAN IN ENDWALKER LMAO) so that was just a moment where I went. AH. ALRIGHT.
like. flan’s initial motivation was explore the world and meet people and make friends and just.... learn? i guess? as generic as that sounds lol. she wants to try anything and everything. or she wanted to, originally. she was also really dependent on the scions, because she was responding to things as they happened to her, rather than taking initiative on anything.
it really took until shadowbringers for her to become less ‘i’m someone who just got lucky with the Blessings Roll but i’ll do what i think i should with it’ and more ‘someone’s gotta take care of this and i’m not waiting.’ because she loves these people. and when they’re not there to help her figure things out, she has to do it herself, because she wants them to be okay.
and endwalker just like. pushes her a LOT further... she’s been upset before, yes, and wanted to fix things, but nothing has made her INFURIATED like zenos has. it’s a feeling she’s not used to but one that really transforms her into like. a hero in her own right, lmao, unfortunately enough. the bodyswap quest wasn’t a wake-up call so much as it was something that cemented what she cares about and who she was going to be from that point on. she’s here to protect the scions, and together they’ll protect everyone else. and the world is big, and strange, and wonderful, and everywhere she goes she finds things she loves more, and she can’t stand the thought of it being dismissed and condemned to nothing.
SO IT’S. different from venat, but their ideals are the same. she sees a friend in her much more quickly than she does anyone else. getting asked if it was all worth it was a defining moment of sorts, because if you’d asked her like... an expansion ago, she would have to think about it a while lmao. but in this case, she knows that yes, yes it was. ramble over, that’s all folks

my thoughts on Iki Island:
(spoilers under the cut)
I really loved this DLC! I had nothing but high hopes for this after playing the base game last year (and three more times after that), and Sucker Punch didn’t disappoint. The whole time playing it I felt like it was only adding to my love of the characters and the stories they set up in the base game, and then all the new quests and mechanics added a lot of fresh fun on top of that!
So where to even begin.
The opening scene was super cool and a neat way to introduce the new shaman enemies. And despite Yuna only actually being in one scene, it was a delight to see her again. Though since I’m playing the DLC after finishing everything, I don't love the continuity of Yuna not accompanying him, but gameplay wise I knew that wasn’t going to happen anyway, but I just love when she’s with us <3
Went for my horse straight away and I was THRILLED to see that Kaze can now kill enemies and the new charge mechanic was way more fun than I was expecting and I was having too much fun with that. After Nobu, I didn’t expect to get attached the Kaze all that much (even if he continued on into a later game) but I was quickly proved wrong with this because I now kind of separate Nobu as the more gentler of the two, that was always there for me, and while Kaze is too, I like imagining Kaze is a lot younger and his aggressive personality in this really sold that and I like that it probably eases Jin’s worries a bit to see his new horse being able to fend off attacks a bit better. Plus, with his new armor, he’s even safer <3 Really fell more in love with Kaze in this, which I didn’t expect.
Met The Eagle next and had that whole encounter. I love how right away if you pay attention, you know Yuna isn’t Yuna because she’s never once addressed Jin as ‘my lord.’ I think the only time she said it was when she was talking to both him and Shimura at the lighthouse, and it wasn’t because she wanted to. But still, even knowing something was wrong, it’s cute that Jin’s mind went to her as a safe place who he’d have no problem entrusting stories and secrets to, which was obviously the Eagle’s goal. And hearing her voice warp into the Eagle’s was creepyyyy and so good <3  (my Yuna loving ass was sad to realize that was most likely the last time we’d see her, but that’s okay) That next part of the hallucination really got you feeling for Jin, and I couldn’t help but be frustrated that he’s only a child, how was he supposed to help?!?!?
So I ignored Tenzo’s next mission and explored and pretty much completed the entire island. I got jump scared WAY too many times by her taunts, but I loved how that just added to the direness of the situation. I was obsessed with finding all the hallucinations and it just kept breaking my heart how Jin has all of this pent up guilt/heartache--with Ryuzo (he had so many I found), his father, his uncle, the Khan, Nobu :(, Masako, etc. I honestly had expected to find one regarding Taka and I’m a bit sad that I didn’t. Add those to the memories of his father and the ever-present taunting, I was going through it with Jin <3 At least you can pet the animals for him <3 The little smile he’d get every time was worth it. And the flute playing mechanic was really neat!
The first memory I got was their chat before Kazumasa’s death and honestly that got me all teary because Jin wanted so badly to hear him say he accepted him as his son, but deep down, would he have felt it? And my heart just breaks so much for Jin because as I kept going through the memories, I kept thinking how well 1) his dad sucks, but 2) both father figures kept wanting Jin to be somebody else. And it hurts that he was closer to Shimura’s way of thinking and how we even see that one time that Shimura corrects Jin, that his recitation of what honor means were his father’s words, and gets Jin to say that kindness is what honor means to him and wow. <3 <3 <3 But it hurts knowing their fate too <3 That while Shimura was more of a father to Jin than Kazumasa was, eventually, he couldn’t accept what Jin was doing in their way. Though it does hurt and make you wonder if Shimura was frightened that Jin was turning into his dad...I had that thought many times. (I loved seeing Adachi so much though omg <3 <3 <3) It was very interesting how the song Jin ends up playing for his father at the end of the memories is the ‘Jin Sakai’ theme. And then how that in turn, morphs into ‘The Way of the Ghost’ later on when in the final battle.
It hurts that Jin had Chiyoko in his life for such a short time. I’m glad he did have Yuriko at least, but all of Jin’s memories on his mother and how she emphasized just living was so prominent, and her love of animals clearly passed to him and that gentleness too. And of instruments. Such softness, and I love that he retains that even as an adult. It makes sense that he doesn’t speak of his mother as often since he has far less experiences with her vs Kazumasa or Shimura, but it was nice to see her influence within him.
Did this quest near the end of my exploration but I got the BIGGEST smile on my fave when I barged in the house to find the Ghost of Iki Island was Kenji <3 <3 <3 I love this dumbass so much and it was so nice to see a familiar face <3 Plus it let Jin have an actual full laugh when Kenji referred to them both as ‘tough guys’ XD His quests are always enjoyable for me and so I really loved that (though I was also Jin when he’s like “...you didn’t say goodbye.”) but I was happy to see him do the right thing at the end <3 THEN I got to duel the Viper because I diffused the situation instead and that was fun. Love that Jin explains his knowledge of negotiation was learned from all the years with Shimura <3 Also enjoyed spotting Kenji later in the Refuge XD
Really enjoyed all the side quests overall, loved all the animal sanctuaries, and the archery was a TON of fun! Getting the horse armor was neat, seeing Jin actively stop a Mythic retelling, though I was surprised there was no duel for that one. The one for the monkey armor was so creepy, following the lights in the cave, but so damn cinematic and that fight was incredible plus that amor is my new best friend. Seriously omg, the duels in this DLC felt so much beefier than the base game (I was playing on hard so that could be a reason, but the fights didn’t feel this tanky in the base) But that armor just made them a piece of cake if you’re good at perfect parries and perfect dodges <3 <3
Loved the banter and camaraderie between Jin and Tenzo throughout. And I really enjoyed Fune’s character as well! Did the next few story missions and I couldn’t help that sense of foreboding slipping in as I was getting more attached to these characters. Love that they had Kidafure Battlefield on the map but it isn’t till the mission that they tack on the ‘Village’, really hitting home what happened there.
Maybe I should have been, but I did not see the twist with Tenzo coming at ALL! I physically gasped when he spoke the “May your death benefit all things” to that random Mongol and I was soooo tense, like Jin listen I know he was your dad but also Tenzo spared you. Which I love in the long run how he spared the Butcher’s child only to save him later in life, and Jin could save him and the island in return <3 Because ohhhhhh boy did I get emotional when Jin stopped the Eagle from landing that blow.
But before that, HER FIGHT IS SO FUCKING COOOOOL!!!!!! SHE IS SO DAMN FAST AND SHE EASILY WIPED THE FLOOR WITH ME THE FIRST TWO TIMES. I also love her references to Khotan and that her moveset with the spear shares some similarities with him.  I tried once more in my Ghost armor (for fashion) and then I switched to the Sarugami armor and was flying through just to have that whole cutscene.
I know culture is different and obviously I can never understand that mindset, but to hear him say to Jin that they both should have died there broke my heart. What kind of a father wants his son’s death with him like that?!?!?!?! But I LOOOOOOVED ‘Honor and Ash’ playing in the background for that scene, as Jin is rejecting what his father may have thought/wanted (just like he did to Shimura with that track at the end of Act 2) and then it moved up a key just to reinforce that Jin is forgiving himself for this and letting go and again, forging his own path just as he did with his uncle. I loved that they used that piece for that pivotal moment...
...JUST TO KICK IT INTO AN EVEN HIGHER GEAR WITH JIN SAVING TENZO AND THE GHOST THEME BLARING IN WITH A KEY CHANGE TO THEN TRIUMPHANTLY FINISH OFF THE EAGLE!!!!! I WAS SO HYPED (and also hoping I wouldn’t die cuz how anti climactic would that have been?!?) but I didn’t and I really enjoyed the resolution between those two. I bowed to him after he bowed to me and I love that they even added dialogue for that if players do decide to do that <3 <3 <3
The next quest with Fune was sweet, though it felt a little odd to do after defeating the Eagle, but it was sweet nonetheless. I have to finish up some trophy stuff, I guess there’s unseen quests that I’m sure I’ve done a few of, but I have to figure out what I missed. The dueling ring was fun, though that lady was the most difficult for me.
A few things of note:
-I like that in this DLC, you really can’t tell if it’s better to kill or spare Shimura. And how there are lines that could mean slightly different things to Jin depending on what he’s done. I’ve done both and I was on a file where he spared him, but besides a hallucination mentioning the Ghost being hunted for the rest of his days, nothing else pointed to one choice or the other.
-Though a line Jin said to Sugi threw me a bit when he said something along the lines of ‘you’ll never understand how hard it is to kill your family’ and maybe he was referencing his guilt for his father, but I’m like ?????? who else did you kill Jin??? Shimura is fine in this play through XD
-Talking with her though, I like that Jin described himself as ‘someone who knows what it’s like to be hunted’ :((((((
-Tenzo also made reference to a friend of his being beheaded, but not finding the head till a week later, and asking Jin if he understands that and while the situation is different, I bet Jin’s mind went to Taka :(
-Loved the subtle storytelling elements with Jin falling into his nightmares during the fight through the Gorge and his resolve disappears each time. The second time it happened, I verbally went “oh my resolve.....oh.”
-I do think Sucker Punch made a lil mistake though because I started thinking about how in Tale 8 of Masako’s quests, I’m almost certain she mentions Jin not understanding her need for revenge or something along those lines, and she talks about Shimura hunting down Kazamasu’s killer for weeks and how Jin had his closure. But uhhhhhh obviously his killer was never found? Or they killed the wrong one? And they didn’t mention it was on Iki Island and obviously didn’t have that foresight that they’d be doing this DLC since he was killed in the snow in the base game and now it was under a wisteria tree, but besides that small thing, I had no complaints! except for always wanting more Yuna
It was so great and I felt it really complemented the base game, especially in regards to everything that Jin feels guilty and responsible for, but also puts his relationship with Shimura is so many new lights that I loooove and I need to talk about more!!! If you read this far, feel free to hmu to chat about it because my best friend who played the base game at the same time I did and screamed with me about it has not played this yet and ahhhhh!!!!!!

Indie Game Spotlight: The Haunted Island, a Frog Detective Game
Spoopy season isn’t quite over in this week’s Indie Game Spotlight. In The Haunted Island, a small sloth has been haunted for weeks by a mysterious ghost that nobody can seem to track down. There’s a mystery afoot, and the only one who can solve it is the renowned investigator known simply as The Detective. Finding clues and questioning suspects is just part of the job for such an experienced frog, but this case is a tough fly to catch.
We spoke to Grace Bruxner, who is the creative director of Worm Club, and responsible for the art, writing, and design, among other things. Also in Worm Club is her partner Thomas Bowker, who works on the UX and programming, and their composer Dan Golding, who makes lovely jazzy tunes (fun fact: Dan also did the music for Untitled Goose Game).
Tumblr media
The Haunted Island looks like it has a lot of different animal friends. What kind of animals can we expect to meet?
So many animals! We have a sheep, a duck, a sloth, a wombat, a koala (gotta get that Australian representation in somewhere!), and, of course, a frog. I am probably forgetting a few. We basically chose animals that wouldn’t look horrifying standing up. Some people still think they’re horrifying, but that’s not my problem, really.
What kinds of gameplay mechanics can we expect?
In terms of mechanics, The Haunted Island is a super simple game that focuses on talking to silly characters and helping everyone out, in order to solve the mystery. It does have several un-skippable cutscenes, which have been described as “why can’t I skip the cutscenes.” Mechanics—who needs ‘em! Except for, like, car mechanics, I guess.
Tumblr media
Are there any detective-genre movies, books, or games that helped inspire the game?
We had a volunteer at PAX West who described the game as “Animal Crossing meets LA Noire," which is kind of true. I haven’t played Animal Crossing yet, but I really liked LA Noire. It has so many silly moments that aren’t intentional, and I wanted to sort of emulate those moments in my game. I also love Agatha Christie novels, as well as the live-action Poirot TV show, but unfortunately, a lot of those older detective shows and books have some problematic content. As far as I know, we have no weirdly racist bits in the game (I really hope we don’t, as I am the one who wrote it). Frog Detective doesn’t take itself very seriously, but all the characters do. I find inspiration from shows that I find sort of accidentally funny because of the dialogue. For example, Degrassi and Riverdale both have very funny dialogue, which seems mostly unintentional, though I’m sure the writers have fun with it.
Tumblr media
Have you learned any interesting frog facts while working on the game?
Frog Detective isn’t a super educational game, so I haven’t done a whole lot of frog-related research, but I will say I recently learned that frogs and toads are basically the same creatures, biologically speaking. They’re classified as frogs or toads depending on their size!
What do you hope players will take away from your game?
That it’s OK to be second best.
Ready to hop on in? You can find out more about The Haunted Island, as well as its successor, Frog Detective 2: The Case of the Invisible Wizard, over on Worm Club’s website, or simply check it out at your favorite online vendors.

TEN OUTTA TEN 1010
Welp, its happened. I’m into No Straight Roads, and the boys with the K-Bop in their step has got me hooked.
So I’m gonna celebrate (for the moment) with lots of gathered info I’ve found, seen, or heard speculated, regarding the Top Boy Band of Vinyl City... 1010. [Possible OCs to come later]
Some of this stuff might be common knowledge, some is already on the wiki, but hey, no shame in having a consolidated list.
But for now...
The Names of 1010 were deciphered by out of universe fans. They are Rin (White), Haym (Yellow), Eloni (Green), Purlhew (Blue) and Zimelu (Red).
An old placeholder model for 1010 had Black Hair and different tron lines.
1010 in binary is... literally just 10.
Eloni does not get fan letters; He’s the “Funny Band member”, and Funny Band Members don’t get fan letters.
1010 wears Sailor uniforms (The US Navy would call them Dress Blues, so think... Popeye. But no hat.) In fact, their flying limo is a god damn Tron-lined Battleship. Even the Cannons dance to the music.
They’re a parody on K-Bop bands or Boy Bands to the West. And while they’re listed as Funky, they’re technically Synthpop. (Haha, Synth)
In the background of their fight, when the Battleship Limo stops for pictures, you can see that there is a set of pictures of 1010. Rin the White has a Fuschia or Purple Background, while all the others have a background matching their aesthetic colors.
1010 have common powers... ... Firing Lasors. ... Levitation (Or small time Flight; as they rush to the side to meet the Cameras) ... “Taking to the Sky”, or just really powerful jumping. ... Being powered by Cheers. ... There’s a reason I left Shield off in a moment.
1010 are both outrageously tall (Mayday only comes to their waist when they stand up properly), and outrageously heavy (did you hear them walk backward in their intro cutscene? How heavy are these guys!?)
It could whatever kind of AI they have, but they are waaaay insynch, almost preemptively. Perhaps 1010 are directly linked to each other?
In most of their appearances outside of battle, they all have the same colored eyes as their aesthetic colors. But in Battle, they all have White eyes. Mind that in their Show Stopper picture, they’re back to having their aesthetic eyes again. Take that as you will.
1010 has associated attacks, when you’re in the Phase facing the Factory and Neon J. ... Yellow has Missiles or Splash Damage explosions. No literally, the yellow droid is the missle. ... Green has Bombs. HIS HAIR IS A BOMB. ... Red has Saws. He-He literally uses Red Droid as the Saw. ... Blue has some sort of Staffs or Whirlwind strike. They are staffs made of Purl-Hew. ... Because of his Picture’s Purple Background, White’s likely isn’t an attack but is, in fact, the Shields that occured early in the battle. Which is probably why they’re never deployed, because how the hell can you make a shield out of Rin Bots.
It was pointed out in one of the many Youtube Comment Sections that 1010′s hairstyles match their respective attacks in some form or fashion. ... Zimelu’s Mohawk indicates his associated Saws. ... Haym’s hair looks like a missile. ... Eloni’s hair looks line a Grenade Pin. ... Purlhew’s flat top hair could indicate the fact that he’s literally used as a Staff End. So basically he’s Blue. That’s his attack. [Hah] ... Rin’s the sexy one. Look, for a Band of Robots with fancy hairdos and attacks, he’s not considered remarkable.
As they are a parody of Boy Bands across the World, they may follow the boy band “archtypes” ... Rin is the Leader, and the Heartthrob (He doesn’t have a weird hairstyle, and he does the most flirting / talking; as well as the most promoted) ... Eloni, as already established, is the Funny Guy, or the Comedian. ... Purl-Hew is the Cool Guy, (consider his Sunglasses) ... Zimelu is the Bad Boy (Mohawk, his ANGRY EYES AARGH) ... Haym’s is apparently considered a Pompadour. Maybe he is also a Bad Boy? Consider his name, he may be the Smart Guy. ... There is no known “Shy Guy” or “Cute Guy (Technically, the Second Heartthrob, but isn’t a threat to first Heartthrob’s position). So, go forth and create.
Fun Consideration on my part. Since Names can have meaning in No Straight Roads and meaning in personal names... ... Rin is a japanese name, and boy can it mean a lot of stuff depending on the Kanji (Some of the meanings are “Dignified” “Compassion” “Cold”). He’s probably coolly impassionate off stage. ... Purl-Hew is apparently a pun on Pearl Hue (cos I guess blue Pearls). Perhaps he likes puns. ... Zimelu is an ooold fortress in Lativa apparently. Perhaps he has a warish personality. Or I guess knows very Niche military history. (Perhaps, in-universe, it was the name of a base Neon J served at?) ... Haym is the name shared by a few people, but in the themes of music, its probably Nicola Francesco Haym (Italian Poet, Opera Librettist, Composer, Manager, Editor and Numismatist (That’s uh, a guy who studies Currency)). Perhaps our Haym is quite the Nerd. ... the name Eloni means Lofty. Which can me “Of Imposing Height” (They all are), “Noble or Exalted Nature” (Possibly?) “Proud, Aloof or Self-Important” (They all are that too, yes), or in regard to Lofty Wool “Thick and Resilient” (I mean, if you look at those thighs-- Ahem). So basically Eloni’s name defines all the group... Wow, poor fella. No wonder he’s the Comedian, he’d have to pull anything to get noticed (when its not about his hair) [THE DUDE DABS]
If Battledroids all have background memories to be more efficient in combat... Does 1010 have backup memories from Neon J?
Metro Division shows other kinds of Robots, and the progression of 1010′s Mark Models (1 looks like your typical Sailor, 2 looks a bit like our 1010 but more droid, jointed and blocky, and our 1010 is currently mark 3... There are 4 known Types of Droid, so a 4th Mark may be on the way)
Neon J, Manager and Creator, is a Vetren of Vinyl City’s Navy (It only has a Navy); and his District is literally a Theme Park mashed with a Ship Yard.
Neon is the 10th element of the Periodic Table, and J is the 10th letter. Dude loves his 10s.
Considering how he replaces the bots in battle, or even outright uses them as weapons... Perhaps his “Troops” are not the Bot bodies, but the AI possibly hosted inside? 1010 has more personality out of battle after all, and Neon is seen fervently protecting 1010 when their eyes share their hair color. (As their eyes are only white in battle...) Hm, mayhaps the HC is, that when their Eyes have color, the AI is truely present.
Neon is a Cyborg, note that his body appears to be the same kind of droid as 1010′s, with a Radar head. His brain is apparently in his radar, and as we saw post-battle, that head was smashed to hell. Perhaps the reason he was reminiscing so much and though that BBJ was really after him, was because of some serious onset head or brain trauma.
Apparently, Vinyl City has or has had Border Wars. This could be a reference to the Korean DMZ Conflicts (As 1010 does distinctly include Korean K-Pop, and South Korean men do have to serve 2 years in the military forces by law), but there have been hundreds of different Border Wars throughout the world. [ I wonder what war Vinyl City was in. Perhaps against the Artist Capital of the World, Canvas City ] [ Oh take me down to the Canvas City, where the grass is green and the pics are pretty--]
Neon’s passion is Dancing.
Neon J and DJ Subatomic Supernova do seem to be in a lot of pictures together. No wonder everybody ships them.
Neon J used to make toys, as seen by the collectibles you can get. Done by hand too. Though if each toy found is a stage in his life... I wonder who the doll with the violin is.
Think maybe Neon J has direct control over 1010? I mean they share the same voice, they have a passion for poses and dancing, he does directly command them...
Are Cyborg parts cheap? Or was Neon J someone important enough in the Vinyl City Navy to actually become a cyborg? Military doesn’t do expensive prosthetic surgeries for random grunts without reason.
Okay, regarding what the Azkar faction is. Its probably suppose to be Askar. Azkar is a type of Islamic Prayer. Askar is actually Arabic for Army. So it’d be The “Army Faction” (which makes more sense for a nation city-state that only has a Navy)
The place he called “Kewan” is not a real world place. Its either Persian for “Saturn” (What, is he... Is he a SAILOR SCOUT!?) or Kurdish for Mountains (He does mention mountains).
Possibly more as information arises.

Original Song: Yorktown
The final battle. Neku and his friends team up to face Megumi’s final form, even as he steals all of Neku’s partners away.
Since an alternate title of the original song is “The World Turns Upside Down”, perhaps an alternate title of this one could be “The World Turns Upside Down With You“?
Anyway, this song was a real beast. I don’t think I need to explain why. I did it in segments, some smaller than others, but once I figured out how I wanted it to be paced, it came together alright.
The bit at the start is messy, visually, but I like how it’s a nice wholesome moment between Shiki and Beat. I wish we could have gotten more of their friendship. It’s hard to figure out how to size Beat though, he’s a big fella.
I didn’t intentionally reflect the poses of everyone after the fight as they are in the cutscene (minus Neku, I guess, whose face can’t be seen anyway), at first anyway, but it was fun to lean into that a bit. This is the one time that all four of the playables, Neku and his partners, are all together in one fight, so I had to make the most of it as I could. I generally like the visuals throughout this one, even if cutscene stills take up a lot of space. It was fun making this one!
Also, one last detail that I only noticed because these songs have been very stuck in my head for so long, I like that Shiki and Beat (and Rhyme, if we count Joshua subbing in for her) have rotated roles of Hamilton’s friends between this, My Shot and My New Partner. Each of them have played the roles of Laurens, Lafayette and Mulligan with different moments to take up their solos. I just think that’s super neat.
First Song: Neku Sakuraba
Previous Song: Composer Shifts
Next Song: Your Obedient Conductor
