I JUST FINISHED THE LAST 4 EPISODES OF COWBOY BEBOP AND I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS!
Here is my personal interpretation of the last 4 episodes. Obviously anyone is free to disagree but this is my view of it.
First off: YOU CANT TELL ME SPIKE DIDNT LOVE FAYE BACK. HE DID. HE LOVED HER AND NOBODY CAN CONVINCE ME HE DIDNT.
The two episodes before The Real Folk Blues basically proved he did imo. Spike is someone who shows he cares in very subtle ways and his real emotion all came pouring out in the two episodes before TRFB.
In Brain Scratch, the way he gently touches her face to make sure she's okay and check if she's alive once he finds her. The relief on his face when she wakes up! Spike cares. He's just really bad and scared of showing it because of his past but in that moment when she was really in danger of dying it came through in his expressions and actions!
In Hard Luck Woman he's completely unsurprised and doesn't complain AT ALL when he wakes up to find them on Earth which is miles off course. They lose their lead on a BOUNTY. Even Jet is annoyed but Spike? He is nonchalant, unperturbed. He has never shied from showing his irritation for Faye and her flakey non-serious attitude throughout the entire show but this time he's completely relaxed. He's not even mad that they lost the bounty. He just sits there and waits for her to come back because he knows it's important for her this time. He knows whatever her reasons were to drag them all to Earth, they're necessary and they couldn't wait. He knows about her past and how the lack of it haunts her better than anyone and he understands. So he doesn't say anything. Doesn't complain even once about the bounty or that she's taking too long to come back. Jet does but Spike doesn't. If that isn't someone who cares then what else is it?
And finally, The Real Folk Blues.
Both Jet and Spike are upset about Faye and Ed and Ein being gone, we know that from the start. Then Shin comes into the picture and tells Spike that everyone he's ever been close to is being targeted. What does Spike do? He calls Faye. Spike isn't one to call for help especially not from Faye if he can help it but this time he does. There's danger looming and he calls her almost as if to warn her and to ask for her help to take care of Jet but also to tell her where he's going. He has no reason to do that if he didn't care.
He asked her to come back and he said it was to help take care of Jet but it was so clear he asked because HE wanted her back too. Spike is too proud and detached to ask ANYONE, especially Faye, to come back but he did this time! It's because she means something to him.
I have a personal interpretation of Spike as he was in the past (how we see him in his memories) as well as the Spike in the present too. I felt there was a very big distinction between the Spike of the memories and the Spike in the present.
Past!Spike was in love with Julia. There's no doubt about it. The way he was with her, you could see it clearly.
Present!Spike cared about Julia but it didn't give me the impression he loved her still. His behavior and body language after meeting Julia all seemed to indicate he was conflicted about the past, slightly bitter too. He cared about her. But I don't think he loved her anymore. He'd moved on at that point despite the pain from the past.
When she dies he even tells Jet "there's nothing I can do for her" because she's dead. He admits he definitely isn't going to face Vicious for revenge. His reasons are personal. He's going for himself and maybe for the Bebop crew. They're still targets and Spike cares about them and they're still alive.
Then there's the scene with Faye. She points a gun at him. She almost shoots him to stop him and THAT HURTS SO BAD. She's crying too because she loves him but this is where I feel like Spike admits he loves her too even though it's VERY subtle and easy to miss.
One thing Spike says to Faye before leaving that feels almost like a confession: He says "I thought I was watching a dream that I would never awaken from... But then before I knew it the dream was all over."
He SMILES at Faye while saying the second part. As if it's meant for her, as if it's because of her. She woke him up by coming into his life. She already helped him start to feel alive. That, to me, feels like a confession more than anything else. In the most cryptic way possible, Spike tells Faye the truth without admitting it outright. He doesn't know if he's coming back, but he says what he can. He tells her he loves her in a way she won't realize what he's saying until later because in case he dies he doesn't want her to be in more pain than she already is. But he has to say it. So he tells her he loves her.. by telling her she's the reason he woke up.
And what's the first thing Vicious asks him when Spike confronts him? It's if Spike is finally awake.
I read the entire part of the episode of Spike going to fight Vicious, as him going both to confront his past and to try and keep his new friends, his new family, safe. He goes to tie it all up so he can move forward once and for all.
The flashbacks he's thinking on in the Swordfish while he's going there right after he leaves the Bebop? It's like he's contemplating the events in his life that got him to that point. His friendship with Vicious, his relationship with Julia. The mess it all made. Now that he's awake, he's finally thinking clearly about the events of his past while sitting in the present without it hovering over him.
He's ready to close that chapter, end it once and for all, and hopefully make it back alive for Faye and Jet (and maybe one day Ed and Ein if they come back).
Anyway, that's my interpretation of the last four episodes. As for whether Spike dies? I like to think he lives. The creator of the show, Shinchiro Watanabe, said it was up to us to decide but that he liked to think Spike lived too. Others may prefer to interpret it as Spike having died.
I choose to believe Spike lives. That his crew comes after him. That Faye goes after him and that he finally gets the chance to live the life he was unable to live.
This was just such a beautiful anime and I'm really glad it was my first. There's so much more I can say about these episodes and maybe I will at some point but for now I just had to get all my thoughts out because the last four episodes ran into each other so well forming such a perfect build up to the finale but creating the subtext to leave the lasting impact of impression of both Spike's character and his relationship with everyone else.
I'm gonna hold this interpretation and my version of the ending close whether anyone believes it or not. But one things for certain, the weight? It will be carried. There's no way it can't be.

So I just wanted to ask... the naruto writers really sucked at writing romances right? I mean the only good one was minato and kushina. Maaaayyybeeeee shikamaru and temari but the only reason their interactions are half-way enough is because they werent really main characters. Can u believe that they probably have as many scenes as naruto and hinata? (Excluding the last movie). They ended the show while giving us mere hope for relationships, nothing else. Even naruto and hinata’s wedding arc, I was hoping for some fluff finally, but nothing, they dont even have a scene together except for hey lets get go get married. Dont get me wrong, I abdolutely adore naruto, kinda obssessed even, but this was just one side of the storytelling that was just ignored waaaaay too much for me. Anyways I guess my ask really was what do you think about this?😂
Oh and the last movie, while I loved it for its emotional aspect, it didnt make much sense did it? Not the get together aspect just the villain and how he was taken down with one punch and how kurama got suddenly go independent of naruto to fight a monster (I understand that naruto didnt fie because he probably left some chakra in him but still, like no explanation about how or anything) and the whole kiss while they are floating even when they were back on earth. What did you think about that?
Sorry, its just I just finished naruto like a couple of weeks ago and I have no one to talk about this stuff with sorry if I bothered you😅
You just finished Naruto!!!!! Good job!!!!  And I’m HONORED😱?! That you’d come to chat with me about my thoughts??  I’m afraid I might have unpopular opinions, but here they are.
1.  I never watched Naruto for the romance.  Since I was 11 or 13 or whatever, I knew it was a shounen, a genre of manga targeted for boys.  I watched Dragon Ball Z, Gundam Wing, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, The Big O....all of those action shounen that focused entirely on the male leads, their character growth, and 👊🏼the Big Fight👊🏼.  I also read a TON of shoujo manga, the genre that focuses on female leads, their character growth, and 💕Romance💕.  Of course I always liked when Hinata was in the show more, but she was definitely not the reason I watched.  I didn’t expect it to end with a wedding.  I didn’t think we’d get a movie that is all about a lovestruck male lead.  The amount of romance is way more than I expected for a shounen that is very much about the Big Fight.
For comparison, the characters in Dragon Ball do get married and have kids with follow-up seasons.  As a child, I never watched Dragon Ball for the romance.  Do people do that?  Maybe?  Why would you, though, when you could binge Sailor Moon, Card Captor Sakura, Fruits Basket, Ouran High School Host Club, Kimi ni Todoke, or any other shoujo for much more satisfying dokidoki fuwafuwa feelings.
For me, it’s because of the romance that is in Naruto that made me like it so much more than any other shounen.  It’s obvious that I love romance, so what am I doing playing around in this genre haha.  It’s because of the celebratory ending and the movie that I got more curious about their romance and felt like I (emphasis on meeee) didn’t have enough of NaruHina.  If the show had just ended after the war, that would’ve been perfectly fine for a shounen, and I would have been happy with the ending.  In that case, I never would have gotten into the NaruHina fandom.  If NaruHina had just gotten married with no movie to fill in the blanks, that also would’ve been perfectly fine for a shounen, and I would have been happy with the ending, but yeah, I’d personally wonder how Naruto matured.  So especially with the movie, I think Naruto definitely had enough romance.  More than enough for its genre.
TLDR - Naruto is an action/adventure Japanese genre geared specifically toward boys called shounen.  I think it had enough romantic development for its genre and for a logical ending.  I think the writers did their job. 😁Now I get to write the shoujo/josei version in fanfiction.😁
2.  Regarding the movie, there’s reasons for all of that...If I remember right, Hinata gave Naruto her super special Hamura purple chakra, which powered him up enough to defeat Toneri in a single punch, Sakura-stylez.  And then concerning Kurama physically leaving his body, Naruto doesn’t need Kurama in him anymore after Obito saved his life during the war by transferring Minato’s half of Kurama’s chakra into him.  At the end of the war, Kurama chose to stay with Naruto, but he didn’t have to.  So Kurama can leave Naruto anytime he wants without endangering his life because Naruto still has the other half.
And then with the floating kiss???😆  Yes, it seems cliche.  The logical reason is Naruto’s chakra powered them so high, they’re falling and floating at the same time.  Funny reason is that one fanart that shows Naruto flexing on Toneri by kissing the girl right in front of his home😏.  Cultural reason is the significance of the moon in Japanese folklore as a recurring symbol of eternal separation (1, 2, and 3) and how this kiss scene subverts their star-crossed fate.  Any Japanese viewer will immediately think of those folktales upon seeing the plot of The Last.  I love what the writers did here.
That’s all for now!!!  I hope that wasn’t too much haha  THANKS FOR ASKING!!!!!  I wonder what you think of my thoughts 😬

Echoes of You (Spike Spiegel)
A/N: The formatting on this is h e l l. But when nostalgia slaps you and says “Fall in love with Spike Spiegel again.” You do as it’s says. Thus this
Roman Holiday had changed who she was so many times she didn’t remember who she was when she started. She’d been a drug lord, a spy, an informant, a bounty, a runaway. But these days, with blue and purple hair and a coat large enough to hide a pistol, she settled on being a ghost among the streets, listening and picking up information as she went. She found herself on Mars, mourning friends and paying dues. She was going to have to disappear again soon. But first, she needed food, scissors, and some hair dye; though she was uncertain what color. She tried walking into a convenience store when she ran into someone.
“Sorry about that.” The guy said. From that one comment Roman almost got whiplash. That voice shouldn’t be talking to her. That voice should’ve been dead. If not from the first time, then definitely the second time. She looked up at him and sure enough it was him. Spike Spiegel in all his blue suited, disheveled glory. And he looked just as shocked to see her. “Ro-?” He didn’t get to finish her name because she took off, sprinting in the opposite direction as fast as she could. He of course went after her, he always would, and she scaled a building to get to the roof. She pulled her pistol and waited for him to catch up.
“Who are you?” She asked.
“Ro don’t do this.”
“Tell me! Stop playing cruel tricks and just tell me!” She yelled. It couldn’t be him, it shouldn’t be him.
“Roman, it’s really me.”
“Bullshit, you died.”
“I didn’t,”
“Then you died again.”
“I’ve had worse.” He said with his trademark lazy smile. Roman almost let up at that. He still knew her weak points.
“Gimme the word.” She said, lowering her gun but not putting it away. He furrowed his brows and then figured it out.
“Lily.” He said. Roman lowered her pistol entirely and put it away. Her flower of choice. Julia had roses, she had lilies. Her whole form softened, though she was far from the Roman he used to know. Spike took a step forward to see if she’d let him and sure enough, she didn’t move. “It’s good to see you Roman. Glad to know you’re still picking up information.” He said. Roman shrugged and sat down, still keeping her distance.
“Nothing better to do on this dirt rock. You know you threw the whole operation into chaos, right? There’s a power vacuum with at least seven people trying to fill it.” She said. Spike sat across from her, a little closer than she would’ve liked, but she allowed it. She chalked it up to some primal part of her brain still wanting to keep him as close as she could. He pulled a cigarette from his pocket and stuck it in his mouth.
“What’s next for you then? Figure you’re not gonna stick around for that mess to sort itself out.” He said as he fished out a lighter and lit the cigarette. He took a drag and offered it to Roman. She took it and copied the movement. She never smoked unless she was with Spike. Again, she chalked it up to that primal part of her brain that was still 13 years old and hoped that she still stood a chance against a far prettier half-sister.
“I cut my hair, redye it and catch a flight out of here. I’m thinking Ganymede. Or the asteroids. Hell, I could go be a small fry in Tijuana.” She said.
“And what color will it be this time?” He asked. Roman’s mood was usually determined by her hair. She changed it with regimes, mood, the music she was listening to that month, and sometimes when she felt she had no control of anything. He watched as she thought over her answer.
“Red. Probably. Or pink. Julia always thought I’d look good with pink.” She said muttering the last part.
“You would.” He said. Roman tried to not flush to the color in question, but she never did take compliments well. “I remember she was constantly trying to push you out of the shadows.”
“I like the shadows. No one judges me there. I’m useful there.” Roman argued. Spike chuckled and took a drag from his cigarette. The motion was repeated when he passed it to her to take a drag.
“Maybe, but you have no reason to stay there. Unless you wanna start working for the police.” He said.
“I could be a bounty hunter.” She said with a shrug.
“Oh no, I don’t think I could have you competing for my dinner money too.” He said with his trademark smile. Roman laughed at his comment, a real laugh. Something she hadn’t done in a while. As she laughed, Spike watched her. Her face was lit up by the beginnings of sunset and neon. Her and Julia had no personality similarities, but sometimes they did have physical ones.
“I haven’t done that in forever.” She said when she finally calmed down. Spike smiled at her. She seemed lighter now, more at ease. It was like the laughter fit had locked her into a time machine and she had shed so many years of cynicism with ease. “What about you? What becomes of the great Spike Spiegel? Now newly undeceased again.” She asked. Spike thought it over. He wasn’t certain. He didn’t know if he could go back to the Bebop. But he didn’t know any other way of life. Maybe just him and Jet could strike out again. Maybe he needed to go forward. Maybe he needed to disappear.
“No idea. Maybe dye my hair and change planets.” He said. Roman rolled her eyes.
“Hey, don’t steal my one thing.” She said. Spike chuckled and actually gave her a genuine smile. They were silent for a minute, casually passing the cigarette between themselves. For a moment they felt like teenagers again, sharing cigarettes and sharing a moment of uncertainty. At least that’s how Roman always felt in moments like these. Until finally she broke the tension.
“Annie told me you came to see her.” She said as she looked down.
“Yeah. Thought I might finally kill him.”
“Ignored my bounty then.”
“Always did. Whenever it came up, no matter what the price, no matter what name you were under. I wouldn’t do that to you Roman.” He said. It felt like a whisper on the wind. Like if he said it any louder, he’d lose her like he lost Julia. Roman leaned into this, allowing one of her knees to knock into his. She needed this. She needed him. Outside of just that primal part that told her she was once 13 and crushing on the one person in the whole galaxy she couldn’t have.
“I look at you and I think… god what have we done with our lives? And what did it get us?” She said with what Spike could only describe as the truest form of sadness he’s ever seen from her. Roman Holiday kept all her cards close to her chest until one day, she’d die. But now? He felt like he was peering through a brick in her wall. “I loved my sister more than anything in this life. And I chose her happiness over mine, time and time again.” She scoffed and leaned back on her hands. “God I can’t believe I’m saying this.”
“What?” He asked. He wasn’t sure what was coming next, but curiosity killed him to know.
“A million years ago, she said to me “this one’s mine.” So, I stood by.” She said. “And I knew I shouldn’t do anything, I should just leave and pretend I never met you. But Julia,”
“She was too kind for that.” He said as his brain was slowly putting the pieces together. He had always wondered when they were kids, even before Roman became a shadow figure, why she always seemed to fall into that point, even when Julia brought her out, or when he tried to talk to her. But now he got it. She’d been hiding pain this whole time.
“I should go.” She said. She stood up and dusted herself off. Spike stood up as well and grabbed her wrist before she could go anywhere.
“Don’t disappear again.” He said. Roman looked down at her beat up shoes, trying to hide what had just come to pass.
“You can’t ask that of me.” She said.
“Ro, you’re all I’ve got left.”
“And who’s fault is that?” She snapped. Spike wanted to get offended. But he remembered an incident when they were younger, where he’d gotten too close and she’d snapped, and he retaliated. They didn’t speak for a month. Not until Julia forced them to, and not until after he’d brought her lilies. He sighed and plucked the nearly burnt out cigarette from his teeth and passed it to her. She took a drag and then stomped it out. She was still looking down at it when Spike brought her face to look up at him. Roman unintentionally leaned her cheek into his hand, blinking at him a couple of times.
“I won’t let this be the last time I see you Roman.” He said. Spike, at his core, was a deeply sentimental person. He couldn’t lose Roman. She reached up and brought his face to hers, giving him a small, soft and what Spike could only describe as a ghost of a kiss. Like she was afraid of what fully kissing him would mean. He kissed her cheek in turn, letting it sit there a little longer than either of them expected. When they separated, they put the distance back between them. Once again, afraid of what the closeness would do to them. She tossed him a comm unit she had pocketed off some guy and he caught it with ease.
“Call that ship of yours.”
“Wouldn’t that be going backward?” He asked.
“One step backward to go miles forward? I think it’s worth it. Call them Spiegel.” She said. Spike nodded.
“Remember, pink.” He said. Roman gave him a small, soft smile and nodded.
“See you Space Cowboy.” She said as she ran off the edge of the roof, scaling down the building to go buy some scissors, some food, and some pink hair dye.

2021 Fic Year in Review
Total number of completed stories: 7!!
Total word count: 79823, plus about 16k from poetry au, which I am hoping to finish by the end of the year, plus a bunch of essay and article words
Fandoms written in: The big ones were My Hero Academia and Bungou Stray Dogs, but I dabbled in Persona 5, Banana Fish, and Cowboy Bebop
Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? Honestly just about what I expected. I always clock in at around 6-7 works, and i that am lost was A Lot of words and so was A Study in Mafia Black, so I’m pretty happy with what I have. I wanted to finish a few other pieces by now, but poetry au is That One Fic that I have to drag out of my brain (theres always one). Paired with that I’ve been super busy this year and my mental health has not been. great. I’m okay with this.
What’s your own favorite story of the year? I mean, it really would be unfair to myself to say anything except i that am lost, oh who will find me. It was certainly the fic that took me the longest, and even though there are some things I would change, I worked so hard on that fic that I can’t help but love it.
Did you take any writing risks this year? I haven’t really thought of much of my writing as “risky”, but the hollow of a forest fire was a little bit scary just because I know fandom isn’t quite kind to only genderbending one half of a ship (even though forest fire isn’t really about soukoku, it was still scary). I think most of my writing “risks” have just been overambitious word goals, if I’m honest.
Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the new year? Poetry au!! The first draft should be finished soon, and even if my beta and I are both pretty busy, the published work should be out by february I think? I also really want to write a sequel to forest fire that focuses on yosano and dazai, and I also have some ideas for a truth serum fic, but we’ll see.
Most popular story of the year? i that am lost by FAR. To be fair, that is like my only long form, chaptered fic, and its in a big fandom but wow!! I didnt know that so many people would enjoy the niche father-son relationship that I loved
Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion: look I KNOW that the cowboy bebop fandom is kind of dead and that there were like. 15 works in this ship, but the past is a long bone deserved better. I don’t care that they met like once; I am a faye/julia truther
Most fun story to write: please don’t kill me but death of the undying mostlyyy because I just kept adding angsty things and I was thinking about how painful it would be.
but also!!! I really love akechi’s mother as a character? because like we never get much information besides what akechi says, and like. even if youre the best person in the world, if you’re a teen mother in sex work trying to make ends meet who is getting perpetually fucked over by a politician, you’re going to do and say some bad things. but akechi still does a lot of his revenge plan because of her!! he still cares deeply about her, despite everything. and as a child of a mentally ill mother myself, it’s really interesting to see what that does to you, especially when you know that your parents are trying their best.
it was also fun to play with cognition, especially how maruki would see akechi’s mother? because like,,, he doesnt know her, but he thinks he does, in the same arrogant way he thinks he knows wakaba and haru’s father and everyone else he brings back
Most unintentionally telling story: pretty much any of my bsd fics, if I’m being honest. because wow!! dazai’s entire character hit me where it hurt!! and god if that doesnt reflect in my writing
Biggest disappointment: I dont really have that many disappointments of this year, but the big ones were 1. a high school au of banana fish that I meant to finish but couldnt get back into the voice of post watching bsd and 2. a few shuake fics I really wanted to write but chickened out of, mostly because I still havent finished watching all of the confidants and I did not feel comfortable writing fic of characters I didnt know everything about
Biggest surprise: the reaction to forest fire, probably. I was honestly expecting it to be pretty niche, and dont get me wrong, it is still pretty niche, but a lot of people messaged me and I even got art (!!!!!!) of it and that was really lovely because I absolutely did not expect it <33
